The selenium content of human milk, cow's milk and cow's milk infant formula were estimated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The highest values were found in 3 samples of human colostrum (524–865×10-9 g/g dry weight). There was a significant decrease with increasing time post partum. Mature human milk exhibited a selenium content of 230±79×10-9 g/g dry weight. The selenium content of 45 samples of cow's milk from the north-western area of Germany was 200±39×10-9 g/g dry weight. While there was no significant difference between the values of mature human milk and of cow's milk, cow's milk infant formula exhibited significantly (P<0.01) lower values than human milk. The average selenium content of 107 samples of 10 different commercially available fluid and powdered cow's milk infant formulas (range: 18–171×10-9 g/g dry weight) amounted to about only one third of that in mature human milk. With support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Aluminum toxicity is well documented and contamination of milk formulas has been implicated as the source of accumulation in bone and brain tissues. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the aluminum contents of human milk, cow's milk, and infant formulas. METHODS: Aluminum contents were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry in samples of human milk in the colostrum, intermediate, and mature stages; infant formulas from eight manufacturers; and various types and brands of commercially available cow's milk. RESULTS: Mean aluminum concentration was lowest in human milk (23.4 +/- 9.6 microg/l), and did not differ significantly between colostrum, intermediate-stage and mature-stage milk. Mean aluminum concentration was 70 microg/l in cow's milk, and 226 microg/l in reconstituted infant formulas. Aluminum concentrations in infant formulas differed markedly among manufacturers; concentration in milk from one of the manufacturers was particularly high (mean, 551 microg/l; range, 302-1149 microg/l). These values are for milk reconstituted with aluminum-free water under laboratory conditions; formulas prepared with tap water in the University Hospital's infant-feeding unit had even higher aluminum content. Experiments showed that aluminum concentration in the high-aluminum milk could be reduced by more than 70% at the manufacturing stage, by using low aluminum components. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study support the recommendations for infant formula manufacturers to strive to reduce aluminum concentration in their products.  相似文献

The ganglioside compositions of human milk, cow's milk and infant formulas were compared. The results showed that there was a drastic change in the ganglioside composition from the colostrum to later human milk, and that both the patterns and contents of gangliosides in human milk, cow's milk and infant formulas differed markedly. In human milk, the total lipid-bound sialic acid level was two times higher than those in cow's milk and infant formulas. The major ganglioside in the later human milk, GM3 (27.7%), was only a minor component in the colostrum, cow's milk and infant formulas (3.3, 2.8 and 0.4-2.6%, respectively). GD3 represented 49.0, 61.0 and 72.4-86.6%, respectively, of the colostrum, cow's milk and infant formulas, compared to 31.8% of the later human milk gangliosides. Another four gangliosides, which were assumed to be c-series gangliosides, were detected in the colostrum and the later human milk. They represented 33-38% of total lipid-bound sialic acid, and were tentatively designated as GX1, GX2, GX3 and GX4, respectively. However, only GX1 and GX2 were observed in cow's milk and infant formulas. The variation of the gangliosides in human and cow's milk, and infant formulas might have some biological significance regarding neonatal brain development, allergies, infant growth and non-immunoglobulin prophylactic activities against some bacterial toxins.  相似文献

Studies from our laboratory have shown that iron is better absorbed from human milk than from cow milk and that human milk can provide insufficient iron for infants during their first year. We compared iron availability from human milk with that from other formulas and determined the factors responsible for its superiority. Adults were fed 100 ml of human milk, simulated human milk, simulated human milk containing added lactoferrin, two commercial formulas containing iron, 12 mg/qt, and human milk that had been boiled. The simulated human milk resembled human milk in concentration of protein, fat, carbohydrate, iron, total minerals, calcium, and phosphorus. Iron 59 was added to each feeding and iron incorporation into RBCs was determined 14 days after each feeding. Percent iron absorption was highest from human milk and lowest from the commercial formulas. The simulated human milk supported a 9.0% absorption; addition of lactoferrin reduced this to 4.7%. Net iron absorption was 0.12 mg/liter from human milk and 0.40 and 0.37 mg/liter from the iron-enriched commercial formulas. Absorption of iron from boiled human milk was the same as from the unboiled milk. This study confirms the unique ability of human milk to promote iron absorption. Simple manipulation of the protein, fat, lactose, calcium, phosphorus, or lactoferrin content of proprietary milk did not reproduce the iron absorption demonstrated with human milk.  相似文献

Epidermal growth factor in cow's milk and milk formulas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) in human milk, cow's milk and 10 different milk formulas was measured by radioreceptor assay (RRA) using human placental membrane as an EGF receptor. The raw and pasteurized cow's milk contained 324.2 ng/ml and 155.0 ng/ml of RRA-EGF, respectively. These values were almost the same as that found in human milk, when the concentration was expressed as the proportion of protein contents in the samples. On the other hand, no trace of RRA-EGF was detected in 9 different milk formulas, and only one contained a very small amount of it.  相似文献

The polyamine concentration in rat milk and food, human milk, and infant formulas was estimated by HPLC. In rat milk, the concentration of putrescine and spermine was low (generally under 2.5 nmol.mL-1 for putrescine and under 1 nmol.mL-1 for spermine). The spermidine concentration was higher and seemed to increase during lactation. The rat food was richer in polyamines than the rat milk (about 150 times for putrescine and spermine, about 30 times for spermidine). We already proved that ingestion of spermine or spermidine can induce precocious maturation of the rat intestine. The present observations suggest that polyamines contained in rat food could play an important role in postnatal maturation of the rat intestine. The polyamine concentration of human milk was measured from 60 different mothers during a period extending from the 1st wk to the 6th mo of lactation. Great variation was observed. During the 1st mo of lactation, the general pattern was as follows: putrescine concentration generally varied little (from 1 to 3 nmol.mL-1), spermine and spermidine concentrations showed a similar pattern (the highest values appeared at the end of the 1st wk of suckling). After the 4th mo of lactation, putrescine concentration increased slightly, whereas spermine and spermidine concentration stayed almost stable. The concentrations of polyamines in 18 powdered milks for babies were estimated. Spermine and spermidine contents were lower than those in human milk. A protective effect of spermine or spermidine against alimentary allergies is suggested.  相似文献

An adequate supply of calcium is important for normal bone mineralization in infants. Special infant formulas have been developed to treat infants with a high risk of developing allergy. Similar to other diets, it is important that these products are nutritionally adequate. We have measured calcium retention from a new formula based on whey hydrolysate and compared it with conventional formulas, using extrinsic labeling with calcium 47 and the weanling rhesus monkey as an animal model. Retention of calcium was similar for all formulas studied: 45% +/- 4% (mean +/- SEM) from whey-hydrolysate, 47% +/- 2% from whey-predominant, and 53% +/- 7% from casein-predominant formula. Calcium retention from human milk, 72% +/- 3%, was significantly higher than from formula. Using these retention values and the calcium concentrations of the diets, infant formula and human milk deliver approximately equal amounts of calcium to the infant.  相似文献

The content of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in human milk, cow's milk and cow's-milk-based infant formulas was determined by radioimmunoassay. The mean levels of IGF-I in full-term milk and preterm milk 0-4 days post partum 2.2 +/- 0.3 and 2.4 +/- 0.5 ng/mg protein, respectively. The IGF-I content in human milk was not affected by gestational age or birth weight and was constantly excreted up to 10 days post partum. The IGF-I content in human milk was significantly higher than that in cow's milk (0.6 +/- 0.1 ng/mg protein, p less than 0.01). IGF-I was not detected in the milk formulas. The IGF-I in human milk might be absorbed or could act locally in the intestine and may be of importance in the nutrition of neonates.  相似文献

In recent years it has become accepted that healthy human intestinal microflora may play an important part in priming the infants' systemic and mucosal immunity. Dietary modulation of the gut microbiota is a topical area of nutritional sciences and the main focus of many current functional foods such as non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs). Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and trans-β-galacto-oligosaccharides (TOS) have been claimed to benefit the health of the colon by selectively stimulating the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli (prebiotic effect). It could be of clinical interest to manipulate colonic flora because it is supposed that specific bacteria in the gut microbial microflora could promote potentially antiallergenic processes and play a key part in atopic disease prevention. Supporting this view is the finding that analysis of the composition of the intestinal bacterial populations showed different microbial patterns between healthy and allergic individuals. Assuming that non-digestible TOS and FOS can affect the intestinal ecosystem beneficially, the opportunity for gut flora manipulation arises in bottle-fed infants. New preterm and term infant milk formulas, supplemented with a mixture of TOS and FOS as prebiotic ingredients induced a significantly higher colonization of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. In the future, selective manipulation of the intestinal microbiota might be an approach to novel prophylactic and therapeutic intervention strategies of atopy, by redirecting allergic Th-2 responses in favour of Th-1 responses.  相似文献

Anaphylactic reaction to goat's milk in a cow's milk-allergic infant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Goat's milk has been used as a substitute for cow's milk in cow's milk-allergic individuals. It is currently advocated for this purpose in writings and internet resources directed at the lay person, and infant formula based on goat's milk is available in many countries. Clinically significant cross-allergenicity between cow's and goat's milk has been noted, but a life-threatening cross-reaction has not been reported. We describe a 4-month-old infant with immunologically documented cow's milk protein allergy but no prior exposure to goat's milk who developed anaphylaxis after the ingestion of commercial goat's milk. Subsequent skin prick testing demonstrated a specific reaction to goat's milk. Thus, the cross-allergenicity between cow's and goat's milk proteins can lead to life-threatening complications. Individuals allergic to cow's milk protein should avoid goat's milk and goat's milk products.  相似文献
