The reproductive success of wild birds has been affected by exposure to multiple contaminants. Reproduction of captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) was suppressed when adult birds were exposed to dietary polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, the reproductive effects of in ovo exposure to PCBs is explored, along with determining effects on reproduction in second-generation birds indirectly exposed to PCBs. Reproductive changes in this subsequent generation are examined separately in male and female birds. Captive American kestrels (F. sparverius) were hatched from clutches with eggs containing environmentally relevant levels of total PCBs (34.0 μg/g whole egg WW versus 0 μg/g controls); parent birds had been fed PCB-spiked (Aroclor 1248:1254:1260) food (7 mg/kg BW day−1) for 100 days until their eggs hatched. In 1999, the second-generation PCB birds were paired with unexposed kestrels having reproductive experience. In ovo PCB exposure suppressed egg laying completely in 25% of PCB females and resulted in delays in clutch initiation and smaller clutch sizes for PCB male and female pairs. There was no evidence in this study of in ovo PCB treatment effects on fertility or hatching success. The decline in reproductive success was also reflected in the reduced fledging success and higher incidence of complete brood mortality of PCB nestlings. Differences between in ovo–exposed PCB males and females but not between controls were evident in reproductive success. In ovo PCB exposure appears to have had greater effects on female kestrels until clutch completion, with a greater time lag between pairing and egg laying, reduced numbers of pairs laying eggs, and smaller clutches being laid. In ovo PCB exposure has greater effects later in the breeding season on male kestrels, which had poorer hatching and fledging success relative to the PCB females. We investigated whether polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure in American kestrels (Falco sparverius) influenced incubation behavior and whether altered behavior could lead to poor reproductive success. Captive kestrels were fed a mixture of PCBs (Aroclors 1248:1254:1260) at an approximate daily dose of 7 mg/kg body weight, 1 month prior to pairing and throughout incubation. Behaviors of 23 control and 23 PCB-exposed pairs were monitored throughout incubation using an electronic balance in the nest box. PCB exposure resulted in longer incubation periods and in altered incubation behaviors. Seven of 14 behavioral variables showed some association with treatment, with sex-specific effects largely biased toward disrupted male behavior. For most behaviors, the treatment effect was explained by the delayed clutch initiation induced by PCBs rather than by a direct physiological impact of the contaminants. PCB-exposed pairs with greater attendance to their eggs and better coordination of incubation duties had improved hatching success.  相似文献

The development of second-generation nestling American kestrels (Falco sparverius) was altered by in ovo exposure of only one parent to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Polychlorinated biphenyls appear to alter nestling development through both maternally and paternally mediated effects. In 1998, F0 parent kestrels consumed approximately 5 to 7 microg total PCBs/g bird/d (Aroclors 1248:1254: 1260) for approximately 100 d prior to eggs hatching; these eggs, containing total PCB concentrations of 34.1 microg/g, produced 13 F1 offspring, which were then paired in 1999 with unexposed kestrels to examine developmental effects of maternal or paternal in ovo PCB exposure. Using a toxicokinetics model, eggs from the maternally exposed group had predicted PCB levels of 0.03 to 0.34 microg/g, with enriched higher chlorinated congeners. Polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations in eggs of all generations have recently been found in eggs and nestlings of free-ranging eagles. Consistent with the first generation, maternally exposed F2 females generally were larger, had altered growth rates, and delayed maximal growth and fledging compared with control females. Maternally exposed F2 males were heavier but had shorter bones, grew more quickly and earlier, and fledged 2 d later than control males. In the maternally exposed group, concentrations of plasma triiodothyronine were elevated in F2 females but suppressed in F2 males. Paternally exposed F2 hatchlings of both sexes were comparable in size to controls with the exception of having longer tarsi bones, but subsequently showed slower, delayed growth (both sexes) and fledging (females) and lower thyroxine concentrations (males). The alterations in thyroid hormones in the F2 generation are discussed in light of the enrichment of higher chlorinated PCB congeners and hydroxylated PCB congeners. The developmental changes in the kestrel nestlings are likely a function of several possible mechanisms involving maternal PCB deposition, parental behavior, and neurobehavioral and endocrine-thyroid function in nestlings.  相似文献

While reproduction of wild birds is adversely affected by multiple environmental contaminants, we determined that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) alone alter reproduction. Captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius), fed PCB-spiked (Aroclor 1248:1254:1260) food (7 mg/kg body weight/d) prior to and during the first breeding season only (100 d) laid eggs with environmentally relevant levels of total PCBs (34.0 microg/g whole egg wet wt vs 0 microg/g for controls). Reproduction changed during, not after, PCB exposure in this two-year study. The PCB-exposed pairs laid smaller clutches later in the season and laid more totally infertile clutches. Hatching success was reduced in PCB-exposed pairs, and 50% of PCB nestlings died within 3 d of hatching. Nearly 60% of PCB-exposed pairs with hatchlings failed to produce fledglings. Higher levels of total PCB residues and congeners were associated with later clutch initiation and fewer fertile eggs, hatchlings, and fledglings. We suggest that nonpersistent PCB congeners have a greater influence on reproduction than do persistent congeners.  相似文献

We determined that in ovo exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) alters growth of first-generation nestlings during and one year after parental exposure. Captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) laid eggs with environmentally relevant total PCB levels (34.1 microg/g whole-egg wet wt) when fed PCB-spiked (Aroclor 1248, 1254, and 1260) food (7 mg/kg body wt/ d) for 100 d in 1998. In 1999, the same adults laid eggs with estimated total PCBs of 29.0 microg/g. Nonsurviving PCB-exposed chicks were small (mass, bones) in 1998. Survivors showed a strong sex-specific growth response (mass, bones) compared to respective sex controls: Only female hatchlings were larger, and only male nestlings had longer feathers (1998); maximal growth and bone growth rates also differed (males were advanced, faster; females delayed, slower) (1999); and male nestlings fledged earlier and were smaller, while females were larger (1998, 1999). However, regardless of sex, PCB-exposed nestlings generally grew at faster rates in both years. In 1998, greater contaminant burdens and toxic equivalent concentrations in sibling eggs were associated with nestlings being lighter, having longer bones and feathers, and growing at faster rates (mass, bone) for females but slower rates (mass) for males. Both physiological-biochemical and behavioral changes are likely mechanisms. This study supports and expands on the Great Lakes embryo mortality, edema, and deformities syndrome: While PCB exposure alters nestling size, maximal growth and growth rates also change immediately, are sustained, and are sex specific.  相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine (OC) pesticides were measured in unsuccessfully hatched eggs of three different kinds of predatory birds: 3 eggs of sparrowhawks, 7 eggs of hobbies, and 16 eggs of goshawks collected in the German region of Berlin-Brandenburg.Using toxic equivalency factors for birds, eggs of hobbies contained mean concentrations of 478 pg TEQ/g fat and 551 pg TEQ/g fat contributed by PCDD/Fs and coplanar PCBs, respectively. For sparrowhawks the respective TCDD equivalents were 424 and 1278 pg/g fat; those for goshawks were 211 and 935 pg/g fat. The mean value of the summed concentrations of the PCB congeners 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180 amounted to 11 μg/g fat in eggs of hobbies, 9.5 μg/g fat for sparrowhawks, and 16.1 μg/g fat for goshawks.Of the analyzed organochlorine pesticides the concentration of p,p′-DDE was highest (up to 273 μg/g); the concentration of the other OCs, with the exception of methoxychlor in eggs of goshawks (highest level of 10.6 μg/g fat), were negligible. In all cases the calculated toxicity of the coplanar PCBs surpassed the toxicity of the PCDD/Fs, at least by a factor of two. Due to the higher concentration of the coplanar PCB 77 compared to PCB 126 in eggs of hobbies, it is concluded that its metabolic excretion in this species is much lower than in sparrowhawks and goshawks. One manifestation of subclinical toxicity from polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure is the disruption of normal immune function described in numerous species, including American kestrels (Falco sparverius). In 1998, 152 mature male and female kestrels were fed either a mixture of Aroclor 1248:1254:1260 (approximately 7 mg/kg kestrel/day) through their food items, or control diets. Offspring produced by 50 breeding pairs (thus, half received in ovo PCB exposure only) were also studied. Total and differential white blood cell counts, the phytohemagglutinin (PHA) skin response, as well as thyroid hormone levels were tested in vivo in nonbreeding adults (1998 only) and nestlings (1998 and 1999). In 1999, nestlings came from three parental groups; adults exposed in 1998, birds produced by PCB-exposed parents, and unexposed birds. In 1998, directly exposed males but not females had increased total white blood cell counts driven by lymphocytosis, plus a decreased heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio relative to controls. PCB-exposed birds had a significantly greater response to PHA than did controls, with sex as a significant factor and plasma triiodothyonine (T(3)) as a significant covariate. Levels of T(3) were significantly depressed in PCB-exposed birds of both sexes. The 1999 nestlings (F1 generation with respect to PCB exposure) did not show any effect of parental treatment group on the PHA skin response, yet T(3) remained as a significant covariate. We conducted field studies over three years to assess body burdens and maternal transfer of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as well as indices of sexual dimorphism in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) of the upper Hudson River (NY, USA.) We collected adult turtles in areas known to be contaminated with PCBs and in nearby reference areas for measurement of body size, precloacal length, and penis size. We analyzed PCB concentrations in eggs collected over three years and in whole blood from adults in one year. Total PCB concentrations (mean +/- standard error) in eggs were 2,800 +/- 520 and 59 +/- 5 ng/g wet weight in the contaminated area and the reference area, respectively. Eggs from the contaminated area were significantly enriched in tri-, penta-, and hepta-PCBs relative to the reference area. Blood from adults in the contaminated area averaged 475 +/- 200 and 125 +/- 34 ng/g wet weight for males and females, respectively. In the reference area, blood PCB concentrations were 7 +/- 3 and 4 +/- 1 ng/g wet weight for males and females, respectively. Significant positive relationships were found between carapace length and blood PCB concentration for both sexes in the contaminated area; however, only a marginal relationship was found between female carapace length and concentration of PCBs in their eggs. Our results suggest that PCB contamination of the upper Hudson River presents risks of establishing high body burdens and of maternal transfer of PCBs to eggs, although our measures of gross morphology revealed no discernable expression of abnormal sexual development or reproduction.  相似文献

Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were captured and banded at six sites that differed in polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination levels in the Housatonic River watershed, western Massachusetts, USA, from 2000 through 2004 to test the prediction that apparent survival rates of females in more contaminated areas were lower than those from less contaminated areas. We also tested whether plumage coloration affected over-winter survival and whether concentrations of PCBs in eggs differed between birds that did and that did not return the following year. Apparent survival rates were calculated using mark-recapture methods and compared using Akaike's Information Criterion. Model-adjusted survival rates ranged from 0.365 to 0.467 for PCB-contaminated females and between 0.404 and 0.476 for reference females. Models with either survival or capture probability modeled as functions of treatment (degree of PCB contamination), year, and age received some support. The model-averaged parameter estimate reflecting a treatment effect for high-PCB birds was negative (beta = -0.046, SE(beta) = 0.0939). Fifty-four percent of the total model weights involved models in which survival was a function of PCB treatment. Eggs were collected for contaminant analyses from a random sample of females that did and that did not return the following year. Concentrations of total PCBs were the same or higher in the eggs of females that returned compared to the eggs of those that did not return at both the highly and the moderately contaminated PCB sites. This may have resulted from higher-quality females with higher lipid reserves being more likely than lower-quality females to return the following year. Percentage lipid was positively correlated with total PCBs in eggs. Survival rates were similar among swallows with brown versus blue plumage.  相似文献

Dietary polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were evaluated in an atherosclerosis animal model during a 26-week period. Male white Carneau pigeons were maintained on diets containing either 0, 5, 25, or 125 g/g Aroclor® 1254. One-half of the birds from each of the four groups consumed diets which contained 0.5% cholesterol. Serum samples were analyzed after 8, 16, and 26 weeks of dietary treatment. Liver samples were analyzed for Zn and PCB content. Relative liver weight and serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) increased with PCB consumption; however, liver Zn and serum alkaline phosphatase were negatively correlated with PCB exposure. Dietary cholesterol induced hypercholesterolemia, which was accounted for by elevation of serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) and very-low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL). Consumption of dietary PCBs was inversely related to serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), The serum total cholesterol/HDL ratio was elevated by dietary cholesterol but not by PCBs. The serum HDL/LDL ratio was depressed by dietary cholesterol but not by PCBs. Chronic lowering of serum HDL associated with hypercholesterolemia and a decreased serum HDL/LDL ratio, as observed in this study, would be expected to exacerbate atherosclerosis.  相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including non-, mono-, and di-ortho congeners, were determined in migratory and resident birds collected from India and Lake Baikal in Russia. In the 11 different species examined, total PCBs concentrations were in the range of 11–4500 ng/g (wet wt). IUPAC 105, 118, 138, 153, and 180 were the predominant congeners in almost all the birds. White-cheeked tern collected from India and common tern collected from Lake Baikal showed high PCBs concentrations of 4400 ng/g (wet wt) and 4500 ng/g (wet wt), respectively, and accumulated relatively high ratios of penta-CBs (IUPAC 118, 105, 99). Toxic equivalents (TEQs) of non- and mono-ortho PCB congeners in birds collected from India and Lake Baikal were in the range of 1.5–56 and 2.8–370 pg/g wet wt, respectively. Toxic assessment results led by calculated TEQs of the transfer to eggs from female birds revealed that TEQs in most of migratory and resident birds were comparable to the lowest observable effect level (LOAEL) of chicken which is a highly sensitive species against dioxin-like compounds. Calculated transfer TEQs to eggs of common tern collected from Lake Baikal in autumn, however, exceeded the LOAEL of CYP1A induction in bald eagle embryos and ED50 of that in pheasant embryos, suggesting that embryo toxicity by coplanar PCBs in some avian species breeding in Lake Baikal is possible.  相似文献

Insectivorous passerines often bioaccumulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) via trophic transfer processes. Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) frequently are used for estimating PCB bioaccumulation, yet the focus on specific trophic links between contaminated sediment and bird has been limited. Bioaccumulation of PCBs from sediment to tree swallows was examined with focus on trophic pathways by simultaneously examining PCBs in emergent aquatic and terrestrial insects and gut contents of nestlings. Total PCB concentrations increased from sediment (123.65 +/- 15.93 microg/kg) to tree swallow nestlings (2,827.76 +/- 505.67 microg/kg), with emergent aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, and gut content samples having intermediate concentrations. Biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) varied among congeners for tree swallow nestlings and for male and female Chironomus spp. For nestlings, the highest BSAF was for the mono-ortho-substituted congener 118. Nestling biomagnification values were similar for gut contents and female Chironomus spp., suggesting this diet item may be the main contributor to the overall PCB transfer to nestlings. However, gut content samples were highly variable and, on a PCB congener pattern basis, may have been influenced by other taxa, such as terrestrial insects. Considering dietary plasticity of many insectivorous birds, the present study suggests that a variety of potential food items should be considered when examining PCB accumulation in insectivorous passerines.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (Aroclor 1221, 1232, 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260, 1262 and 1268), polychlorinated terphenyls (Aroclor 5460), a mixture of poly chlorinated biphenyls and terphenyls (Aroclor 4465) and polybrominated biphenyls (BP-6) were administered in a single dose, 100 mg/kg body weight injected orally, to mature male and female Japanese quail. Two hr after Aroclor treatment, pentobarbital sleeping times were prolonged (2 to 3 × control) in both male and female quail. Twenty-four hr after treatment, sleeping times were similar to those of controls. However, 48 hr after treatment with Aroclor 1248 through Aroclor 5460 and with BP-6, sleeping times of males were only 1/2 those of controls, whereas after treatment with Aroclor 1221, 1232 and 1242, sleeping times were similar to those of controls. The reduction in sleeping times of male quail 48 hr after administration of PCBs was correlated with the percentage of chlorine in the PCB with greater reductions in male than female quail. The response after three daysad libitum feeding of 300 ppm of each substance was the same as the response 48 hr after a single oral injection. Although very few birds died from the toxicity of the Aroclors and BP-6, mortality was greatly increased during anesthesia when the pentobarbital was administered two hr after single oral dosing.  相似文献

Sixty breeding pairs of captive American kestrels (Falco sparverius) were exposed to a range of sublethal dietary concentrations of mercury (Hg), in the form of methylmercuric chloride, and their subsequent reproduction was measured. Egg production, incubation performance, and the number and percent of eggs hatched decreased markedly between 3.3 and 4.6 mg/kg dry weight of Hg (1.2 and 1.7 mg/kg wet wt), in the diet. The number of fledglings and the percent of nestlings fledged were reduced markedly at 0.7 mg/kg dry weight (0.3 mg/kg wet wt) and declined further between 2 and 3.3 mg/kg dry weight (0.7 and 1.2 mg/kg wet wt). Dietary concentrations of >or=4.6 mg/kg dry weight (1.7 mg/kg wet wt) were associated with total fledging failure. The estimated decline in fledged young per pair (24%, Bayesian regression) for kestrels consuming 0.7 mg/kg dry weight (0.3 mg/ kg wet wt) raises concerns about population maintenance in areas subject to high inputs of anthropogenic Hg. Mercury concentrations in 20 second-laid eggs collected from all groups were related to dietary concentrations of Hg, and the Hg concentrations in 19 of these eggs were related to eggs laid and young fledged. Concentrations of Hg in eggs from the highest diet group (5.9 mg/kg dry wt; 2.2 mg/kg wet wt) were higher than egg concentrations reported for either wild birds or for captive birds (nonraptors) fed dry commercial food containing 5 mg/kg methylmercury. Accumulation ratios of Hg from diets to eggs were higher than those reported for feeding studies with other species.  相似文献

We studied whether polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) may alter the development of song control brain nuclei in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) offspring of pulse-exposed hens. We orally administered 40 microg of Aroclor 1248 to adult female finches before egg laying. When the progeny were 50 d old, we measured the volumes of the song control nuclei robustus arcopallialis (RA) and higher vocal center (HVC) using light microscopy. Both male and female progeny of exposed birds had a significantly smaller RA than control birds (36 and 16%, respectively; p < or = 0.05). The HVC did not differ in either sex between exposed and control groups. Perhaps impaired development of RA was caused by PCB action on steroid receptors. We conclude that animals living in contaminated areas may be at risk of neurological damage in hormone-sensitive brain areas and that changes in brain nuclei related to song may be a sensitive indicator of low-level PCB exposure.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are 209 related compounds, a dozen of which are known as dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) and are among the most toxic PCBs. Polychlorinated biphenyls contribute to many adverse effects to human health, including cancer, and are a major cause of fish advisories in North America. It is a common perception that individual PCB compounds, especially dl-PCBs, rather than total PCB need to be quantified to predict the environmental hazard because of differences in their toxicity potential and distribution among various environmental matrices, including aquatic food webs. Because the current analytical methods for quantifying dl-PCBs are complex and four- to fivefold more expensive, limited fish samples are analyzed for dl-PCBs. Using what likely is the largest dl-PCB fish data set (n = 912) with a wide distribution of fish species (n = 22), size (19-112 cm), weight (100-14,300 g), sex (male:female, 51:49), and PCB contamination level (20-7,300 ng/g wet wt), we show that the comparatively less expensive and rapid measurements of total PCB in fish can be utilized to assess dl-PCB-related toxicological hazard, measured as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin toxic equivalents (TEQ). A regression equation of dl-PCB-related TEQ (i.e., TEQdl-PCB) to total PCB in fish is presented (TEQdi-PCB = [2.56 x 10(-5)]CtotalPCB, r = 0.89, p < 0.001). The regression was evaluated by applying it to three independent data sets of substantial sizes (n = 55, 141, and 176). The TEQdl-PCB estimated using the regression and total PCB measurements were within a reasonable factor of two to three of the TEQdl-PCB calculated from the dl-PCB measurements. The successful evaluation indicates versatility of the regression.  相似文献

From the Great Lakes basin, concentrations of 59 congener-specific polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 14 organochlorine pesticides were measured in blood plasma of northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon) and Lake Erie water snake (Nerodia sipedon insularum), which is endangered in Canada. In 1998, four male adult Lake Erie water snakes were sampled from Pelee Island, western Lake Erie; four male northern water snakes were sampled at Little Lake, about 20 km north of Parry Sound in central Ontario; and four adult gravid female northern water snakes were sampled from Garden Island, eastern Lake Ontario. The blood plasma was pooled by site for a total of three samples analyzed. The Pelee Island sample from male Lake Erie water snakes contained less than half the lipid concentration (0.349%) than samples from the other sites, but it was the most contaminated with PCBs, even on a wet weight basis. Summed concentration of individual PCBs in the Pelee Island sample was 167 ng/g (wet weight), which was 14-fold higher than the next most contaminated sample, which was from Little Lake. The plasma sample from Little Lake contained 12 ng/g (WW) and was four times more contaminated with PCBs than the sample from female snakes from Garden Island, Lake Ontario. Organochlorine pesticide concentrations in plasma were relatively similar among sites. None of the pesticides was found above trace concentrations (0.1–0.9 ng/g) except pp′-DDE, which occurred at 2–5 ng/g among sites. PCB congener patterns in the Lake Erie water snakes were compared to PCB patterns in plasma of common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina serpentina) from Lake Ontario, herring gull eggs (Larus argentatus) from western Lake Erie, and mudpuppy eggs (Necturus maculosus) from the Detroit River. The PCB patterns in water snake and herring gull sample were most similar, followed by the pattern in snapping turtle plasma. The presence of more lower-chlorinated chlorobiphenyls in the mudpuppy eggs relative to the other species made this sample distinct from the water snake, gull, and turtle. The influence of maternal versus dietary sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) deposited to eggs of ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) was investigated. Mature birds that lay a clutch of two eggs every 12 to 15 d were fed a diet of pellets spiked with 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexacholorobiphenyl (unlabelled isotope designated as [12C]PCB153) for 25 d. The birds were subsequently switched to a diet containing isotopically labeled [U-13C12]PCB153 at similar concentrations for an additional 63 d. The toxicokinetics of [12C]PCB153 and [13C]PCB153 were followed in egg and carcass samples with time. Isotopic ratios of PCB153 in yolk lipids were identical to those in carcass lipids after introduction of diet 2, and they did not resemble those of the food at the time of egg formation. The data indicate that the PCB composition of eggs directly reflects the composition of maternal tissues, not the diet, at the time of yolk formation. Egg yolk:carcass lipid concentration ratios for the two isotopes were significantly less than one, averaging 0.33+/-0.02 (mean +/- standard error). Lipid normalized egg:maternal tissue contaminant concentration ratios for persistent organochlorine chemicals in the literature were reviewed for other avian species. The results provide a preliminary data set that suggests egg:maternal tissue contaminant concentration ratios vary among species, particularly among species that invest different quantities of lipids to a clutch of eggs. The results support the hypothesis that dilution of contaminants in egg lipids relative to maternal lipids is related to the reproductive strategy employed by the species.  相似文献

The great horned owl (GHO; Bubo virginianus) was used in a multiple lines of evidence study of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) exposures at the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site (KRSS), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. The study examined risks from total PCBs, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents (TEQWorld Health Organization [WHO]-Avian Toxicity Equivalency Factor [TEF]), and total DDTs (sum of DDT, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [DDE], and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane [DDD]; sigmaDDT) by measuring concentrations in eggs and nestling blood plasma in two regions of the KRSS (upper, lower) and an upstream reference area (RA). An ecological risk assessment compared concentrations of the contaminants of concern (COCs) in eggs or plasma to toxicity reference values. Productivity and relative abundance measures for KRSS GHOs were compared with other GHO populations. Egg shell thickness was measured to assess effects of p,p'-DDE. The concentrations of PCBs in eggs were as great as 4.7 x 10(2) and 4.0 x 10(4) ng PCB/g, wet weight at the RA and combined KRSS sites, respectively. Egg TEQ(WHO-Avian) calculated from aryl hydrocarbon receptor-active PCB congeners and WHO TEFs ranged to 8.0 and 1.9 x 10(2) pg TEQ(WHO-Avian)/g, (wet wt) at the RA and combined KRSS, respectively. Egg sigmaDDT concentrations were as great as 4.2 x 10(2) and 5.0 x 10(3) ng sigmaDDT/g (wet wt) at the RA and combined KRSS, respectively. Hazard quotients (HQs) for the upper 95% confidence interval (UCI) (geometric mean) and least observable adverse effect concentration (LOAEC) for COCs in eggs were < or = 1.0 for all sites. Hazard quotient values based on the no observable adverse effect concentration (NOAEC) 95% UCI in eggs were < or = 1.0, except at the LKRSS (PCB HQ = 3.1; TEQ(WHO-Avian) HQ = 1.3). Productivity and relative abundance measures indicated no population level effects in the UKRSS.  相似文献
