To increase the number of practicing nurses, high school students must be attracted to nursing as a career. This study compares sophomore high school students' perceptions of an ideal career with their perceptions of nursing as a career. The shortage of nurses in Kuwait is attributed to low production of indigenous nurses, resignation and emigration of foreign nurses, and expansion of health care facilities. This study explored Kuwaiti high school students' perceptions of nursing as a profession, their sources of information about nursing, and factors that affected their choice of nursing as a future career. Questionnaires from 289 students attending seven all-female high schools in Kuwait were analyzed. The results revealed that all of the participants were knowledgeable about the functional aspects of the nursing profession, and 35% of them received this information through contact with nurses during hospital visits. However, only 19% indicated they might consider nursing as a future career. The implications of the study for nursing education and practice, and strategies to attract and retain indigenous high school graduates into nursing programs in Kuwait are discussed.  相似文献

Using structured interviews a study was undertaken with 19 high school students in Hong Kong to elicit their perceptions of nursing as a profession. The study also sought to gauge the extent of the students' intentions on pursuing a career in nursing. Responses were content analysed to determine the extent of knowledge and understanding held, intentions on choosing nursing as a career and their reasons. Findings suggest the image of nursing to be poor and that nursing as a career is far from desirable amongst the teenagers of Hong Kong. The reasons appear to be related to the notion of monetary rewards and status within the Hong Kong community. There is also a lack of knowledge as to what nurses do. The implications of such findings include the lost potential for recruitment of candidates of high calibre with a lot to offer the profession and their society. It suggests the need for the profession to find ways of publicizing and marketing the positive aspects with elements of realism which the general population in that part of the world could relate to more readily.  相似文献

The purpose of this literature review is to illustrate the importance of initiating nursing recruitment during the middle school years. Data sources included citations from the years 1989 to 2006. The study focused on middle school students 9 to 13 years of age in Grades 6 to 8. One survey compared middle school students' perceptions of an ideal career and a career in nursing. Other studies discussed interventions such as nursing camps, recruitment videos, presentations, and handouts. After the intervention, the studies found statistically significant increases in the desire of middle school students to consider or make nursing their career choice. One strategy for addressing future nursing shortages might be the implementation of recruitment efforts targeting middle school students.  相似文献

Junior year students (=276) at a culturally diverse, urban high school were surveyed to examine how their perceptions of nursing compared with their perceptions of an ideal career. Findings indicate that significant differences exist among cultural and racial groups and between genders. Declining enrollments in nursing programs, coupled with the current shortage of practicing registered nurses, prompted this investigation of 306 high school students' beliefs about nurses and nursing. The study also identifies potential numbers of future nursing students from high school populations and their primary source of information about nursing. Using an investigator questionnaire, subjects responded to statements about educational requirements for registered nurses along with their working conditions, earning power, and social status. Findings reveal a projected continuing shortage of nurses based on the very small percentage of subjects even considering nursing as a career. Additional findings show that whereas some perceptions about nursing seem congruent with those of nurses themselves, other beliefs held by high school students are not consistent with the realities of professional nursing today. Results of this study can be used by nurse recruiters to correct misconceptions about nursing and to help high school students perceive the profession in a more positive way. Expanding the informational sources about nursing can facilitate the recruitment process.  相似文献

目的 了解实习护生对艾滋病相关知识掌握情况及影响因素,为有针对性开展健康教育提供依据.方法 用整群抽样法,以班级为单位抽取共计544例实习护生,采取不记名独立填写的方式进行艾滋病认知、态度问卷调查.结果 实习护生对艾滋病知识处于中等水平,平均得分(9.49±3.16)分,对主要传播途径认识正确率为81.40%;对高危行为和安全套等知识掌握仅有42.28%.实习护生对待艾滋病的态度呈中等水平,平均得分(172.11±14.37)分.艾滋病知识水平、态度水平的影响因素为学历、民族以及知识得分.结论 实习护生对艾滋病知识掌握不够,态度有待提高.对实习护生开展健康教育不仅要注重提高知识水平,更要加大对艾滋病的态度及高危行为的教育力度.  相似文献

Native Americans have traditionally been underrepresented in nursing. The authors surveyed 19 undergraduate nursing students participating in a university sponsored Native American nursing student support program and examined which social support factors influenced the students' success. Using validated quantitative measures from social psychology, the authors found that overall perceived social support, as well as support from the university sponsored program, positively influenced Native American students' identification with nursing, their interest in nursing, their perception of the value of nursing, and their motivation to continue pursuing nursing as a career. Conversely, perceptions of unfairness due to racial bias within the major negatively affected students' perception of the value of nursing, as well as their motivation to pursue a nursing career.  相似文献

Nursing school is the first place that men are likely to experience nursing in the professional sense. This study explored and documented men's perceptions of their experiences in baccalaureate nursing education. Face-to-face audiotaped interviews were conducted with 13 male nursing students who were in their last semester at three baccalaureate nursing programs. Qualitative methods were used to analyze their responses. The findings showed a lack of enjoyment of nursing school, the importance of career opportunities, frustrating communication differences, and the desire for more male nurse educators. Recommendations for future research include obtaining female students' perspectives on these questions, researching male students from different types of programs, and studying male graduate students to discover why so few become educators.  相似文献

Effective promotion of nursing as a career to high school students can potentially have a positive impact on the shortage of nurses. This study identified the perceptions of high school careers advisers of the Bachelor of Nursing program as a career choice, their perceptions of the attributes and characteristics necessary for nurses, and their perceptions of nurses' roles and responsibilities. These perceptions have not been previously identified in Australia and may not have been adequately considered in the planning of recruitment and retention strategies for nursing. The study findings suggest that careers advisers recognise the complexity of nursing practice in providing direct patient care and the range of attributes required for the registered nurse who provides this care. Careers advisers recognised that nursing had changed over the past ten years, although few perceived the roles and responsibilities of nurses to extend beyond activities related to patient care. There were few requests for information about nursing as a career from careers advisers and the findings indicates that they do not actively promote nursing as a career. This suggests that despite a range of initiatives to promote registered nursing as a career choice, careers advisers are not influencing significant numbers of school students to consider registered nursing as career.  相似文献

目的探讨暗示疗法对男护生未来择业的影响。方法选择我科实习的28名男护生,采取“一对一”带教方法,将暗示疗法应用于临床教学与就业理念的指导工作中,通过问卷调查比较男护生入科与出科时未来择业倾向及其影响因素的变化。结果男护生入科时未来择业倾向中愿意从事临床护理者较少,仅14.3%;经暗示疗法后,出科时愿意从事临床护理的比例显著增加,达42.9%,差异有统计学意义(x^2=4.29,P〈0.05)。在影响未来择业倾向的诸多因素中,暗示疗法可明显减少男护生因传统观念、理想与现实差距、自我与角色冲突等原因而不愿从事临床护理工作的比例(x^2=3.92,4.11,4.64;P〈0.05)。结论正确运用暗示疗法可提高男护生对护理专业的认同感,增强其未来从事临床护理工作的择业倾向。  相似文献

AimWe investigate how the confirmation of expectations about digital technology in the workplace affects the career intentions of nursing students. We also explore the role of task fit in mediating (1) digital technology satisfaction and job satisfaction and (2) digital technology satisfaction and career intentions.BackgroundThe turnover of graduating geriatric nursing students is very high and rising. To support the work of nursing staff, elderly care institutions are beginning to adopt digital technologies that aid in nursing tasks. However, it is unclear whether students’ perceptions of those digital technologies have an impact on their career intentions.DesignThis is a cross-sectional study.MethodsWe recruited 549 geriatric nursing students. Data were collected from December 2022 to March 2023. The questionnaire included seven sections: expectation confirmation, perceived usefulness, perceived safety, digital technology satisfaction, task fit, job satisfaction and career intentions. The validity and reliability of the model were confirmed.ResultsThe results show that the confirmation of students’ expectations for the digital technology used in elderly care services has a positive impact on their career intentions. However, the results do not confirm the impact of perceived security on digital technology satisfaction, or the effect of job satisfaction on career intentions.ConclusionElderly care institutions and educators should monitor the current state of the digital work environment to ensure that it can adequately support students in their work. They should ensure the use of advanced and appropriate technology tools in teaching and clinical environments to provide a richer and more vivid learning experience. These initiatives can support nursing students in their transition from school to practice and increase their willingness to stay in the profession.  相似文献

目的了解合作办学中护理本科生异校学习期间的心理状况及相关因素。方法采用焦虑自评量表、抑郁自评量表、UCLA孤独量表等进行问卷调查。结果护生异校学习期间焦虑、抑郁、孤独得分均明显高于常模,一、二年级无明显差异(P>0.05),主要与来自学习、人际交往等方面的压力有关。结论护生在异校学习期间存在一定程度的心理问题,应针对其面临的压力采取个体化管理措施,提高护生的适应能力,以更好地适应异校学习生活。  相似文献

目的比较不同学制本科护生的临床能力之间的差异,探讨相关因素,为本科护理教育提供有力依据。方法采用本科护生临床能力评价表对普通本科、高职本科及专升本共75名护生和44名教师进行调查。结果75名护生的临床能力均在及格或以上水平。三组护生临床处置、护理科研和临床教学能力的他评结果,差异有统计学意义(P〈0.05);临床能力总评和7项临床能力自评结果差异有统计学意义(P〈0.05)。结论本科护生的临床能力均达到了本科护理教育的目标,但三种类型的本科护生之间临床能力水平存在差异。在临床护理教学中,对于不同类型的护生,带教老师应按照“因材施教”的原则,进行个体化教学。  相似文献

Aims. This study was aimed at comparing perceptions of portfolios between student nurses at the early and latter stages of their training and how they compare with their lecturers’ perceptions. Background. Portfolios are used widely in nurse education. There has been research into how portfolios are perceived and understood, but there is little evidence into how student nurses and lecturers compare quantitatively in perceptions of portfolio use. Design. Survey. Method. Forty‐eight nursing lecturers and 413 nursing students, from a multi‐centred School of Nursing in the UK, completed a questionnaire. Data were analysed with exploratory factor analysis, varimax rotation of the factor solution, internal consistency analysis, and analysis of variance. Results. Five factors were extracted, which were labelled: (1) portfolios as a means of skills acquisition, (2) other means of teaching and learning beyond using portfolios, (3) processes of showing the portfolio to others, (4) having favourable attitudes towards portfolios and (5) lecturers’ ability to share knowledge about portfolios. Scales developed from these five factors had high levels of internal consistency. Lecturers were the most positive of the three respondent groups in their views of portfolios, whereas third‐ and fourth‐year students were the least positive. There were significant differences between student nurses and their lecturers, concerning how information on portfolios is communicated by the lecturer. Conclusion. There were significant discrepancies between lecturers and student nurses in their views on how portfolios are used. The value of portfolios becomes less salient to student nurses towards the end of their training. Relevance to clinical practice. Lecturers and clinical mentors need to look at students’ perceptions and why some nursing students’ views on portfolios deteriorate. There could be regular discussions with students to see how and why the students begin to see portfolios as less useful for their education and continual professional development.  相似文献

This study assessed nursing students' perceptions of threat in the community from the beginning to the completion of their first formal community health nursing course (inclusive of specific community health content associated with relevant clinical experience) and determined how perceptions of threat differed by residential zone and by type of program (generic day, generic weekend/evening, or R.N.). Undergraduate nursing students were sampled from eight National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) accredited baccalaureate schools. Completed pretest data were obtained for 345 students. Completed post-test data were obtained for 274 students. Paired data were available for 197 students. Generally, students were comfortable when the environment was assessed within the context of daylight before and after the course. Students were not as comfortable with the environment when assessed within the context of nighttime either before they started the community course or after they completed it. Students continue to perceive that the community environment presents limited threats, particularly when viewed from the perspective of time of day. Because the community educational experience is not restricted to baccalaureate education (Cahill et al., 1998), nor is it conceptualized as a singular experience (Mellon & Nelson, 1998), the challenge to faculty is to enhance student learning by preparing them in such a manner that they assess their community environment for threats and practice safely within that environment. The use of the Environmental Comfort Scale III, including the open-ended question, may be one way to achieve this challenge.  相似文献

A pilot survey of 300 high school junior students was implemented to elicit their perceptions of nursing and to explore the relationship between the experience of having a nursing role model and the decision to consider nursing as a career. The results indicated that the majority of students in the sample were aware of the caring and helping aspects of nursing, but there seemed to be a lack of knowledge about expanded roles and opportunities for advancement. High school students had significantly different mean opinion scores according to their sex (F = 17.03, p less than 0001) and the decision to consider nursing as a career (F = 10.00, p less than 002). There appeared to be a significant relationship between the experience of having a nurse role model and consideration of nursing as a career option (chi 2 = 8.23, p less than .0041). These findings have important implications for recruitment of young people into the nursing profession.  相似文献
