Dietary antioxidants and lung cancer risk: a case-control study in Uruguay.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
To examine the protective role of dietary antioxidants (carotenoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione, and flavonoids) in lung cancer risk, a case-control study involving 541 cases of lung cancer and 540 hospitalized controls was carried out in Uruguay. The relevant variables were energy adjusted using the residuals method and then categorized in quartiles. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for antioxidants were calculated through unconditional logistic regression. With the exception of lycopene and vitamin C, the remaining antioxidants were associated with significant reductions in risk of lung cancer. Of particular interest was the inverse association between dietary glutathione and lung cancer [OR of quartile with highest intake compared with lowest quartile = 0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.27-0.63]. Also, carotenoids and vitamin E were associated with significant reductions in risk of lung cancer (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.29-0.64 for total carotenoids and OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.39-0.85 for vitamin E). A joint effect for high vs. low intakes of beta-carotene and glutathione was associated with a significant reduction in risk (OR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.22-0.46). It could be concluded that dietary antioxidants are associated with a significant protective effect in lung carcinogenesis and that the inverse association for glutathione persisted after controlling for total vegetables and fruits.  相似文献

A case-control study was conducted in Melbourne, Australia of 88 consecutive males admitted for the surgical removal of a nonmelanocytic skin cancer (histologically confirmed basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and of 88 male control patients admitted for small elective surgical procedures. In both cases and controls, previous diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking habit were investigated and serum beta-carotene and vitamin A levels were measured. A statistically significant inverse relationship was found between the risk of skin cancer and a high intake of fish (p = 0.05); vegetables in general (p < 0.001); beans, lentils, or peas (p < 0.001), carrots, silverbeet (Swiss chard), or pumpkin (p < 0.001); cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, brussel sprouts, or broccoli) (p < 0.001); and beta-carotene- and vitamin C-containing foods (p = 0.004). Cases had a lower mean serum level of beta-carotene (p < 0.001) and vitamin A (p = 0.02) than controls. The incidence of skin cancer in the study was inversely related to the level of serum beta-carotene (p < 0.0001). The correlation coefficient between dietary beta-carotene/vitamin C and serum beta-carotene was 0.22 (p = 0.04). Smoking and alcohol consumption showed no statistically significant association with the risk of nonmelanocytic skin cancer. The results were similar for both cell types. A high intake of vegetables including cruciferous vegetables, beta-carotene- and vitamin C-containing foods, and fish appears to be protective for nonmelanocytic skin cancer, and this deserves further study, as does the possible etiologic relevance of the low serum levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: More information is needed on the efficacy of carotenoids from plant foods in improving vitamin A status. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify the efficacy of provitamin A-rich vegetables and fruit in improving vitamin A status. DESIGN: Breastfeeding women in 9 rural communes in Vietnam were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 groups: the vegetable group (n = 73), which ingested 5.6 mg beta-carotene/d from green leafy vegetables; the fruit group (n = 69), which ingested 4.8 mg beta-carotene/d from orange or yellow fruit; the retinol-rich group (n = 70), which ingested 610 microg retinol/d from animal foods and 0.6 mg beta-carotene/d; and the control group (n = 68), which ingested 0.4 mg beta-carotene/d. Meals of groups 1, 2, and 4 contained <30 microg retinol/d. Lunch and dinner were provided 6 d/wk for 10 wk. RESULTS: Mean (95% CI) changes in serum retinol concentrations of the vegetable, fruit, retinol-rich, and control groups were 0.09 (0.03, 0.16), 0.13 (0.07, 0.19), 0.25 (0.17, 0.33), and 0.00 (-0.06, 0.06) micromol/L, respectively. Mean (95% CI) changes in breast-milk retinol concentrations were 0.15 (0.04, 0.27), 0.15 (0.02, 0.28), 0.48 (0.32, 0.64), and -0.06 (-0.21, 0.09) micromol/L, respectively. According to these findings, the equivalent of 1 microg retinol would be 12 microg beta-carotene (95% CI: 8, 22 microg) for fruit and 28 microg beta-carotene (17, 84 microg) for green leafy vegetables. Thus, apparent mean vitamin A activity of carotenoids in fruit and in leafy vegetables was 50% (95% CI: 27%, 75%) and 21% (7%, 35%), respectively, of that assumed. CONCLUSION: The bioavailability of carotenoids from vegetables and fruit is less than previously assumed.  相似文献

Plasma carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols and risk of breast cancer   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
The roles of carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols in breast cancer etiology have been inconclusive. The authors prospectively assessed the relations between plasma alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, and gamma-tocopherol and breast cancer risk by conducting a nested case-control study using plasma collected from women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study. A total of 969 cases of breast cancer diagnosed after blood draw and prior to June 1, 1998, were individually matched to controls. The multivariate risk of breast cancer was 25-35% less for women with the highest quintile compared with that for women with the lowest quintile of alpha-carotene (odds ratio (OR) = 0.64, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.47, 0.88; p(trend) = 0.01), beta-carotene (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.53, 1.02; p(trend) = 0.01), lutein/zeaxanthin (OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.55, 1.01; p(trend) = 0.04), and total carotenoids (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.55, 1.05; p(trend) = 0.05). The inverse association observed with alpha-carotene and breast cancer was greater for invasive cancers with nodal metastasis. The authors conclude that some carotenoids are inversely associated with breast cancer. Although the association was strongest for alpha-carotene, the high degree of collinearity among plasma carotenoids limits our ability to conclude that this association is specific to any individual carotenoid.  相似文献

The consumption of vegetables and fruit may protect against many types of cancer, but research evidence is not compelling for breast cancer. Carotenoids are pigments that are present in most plants and have known antioxidant properties. Blood concentrations of carotenoids have been proposed as integrated biochemical markers of vegetable, fruit, and synthetic supplements consumed. In a case-control study (270 cases, 270 controls) nested within a cohort in New York during 1985-1994, the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene were measured in archived serum samples using liquid chromatography. There was an evident increase in the risk of breast cancer for decreasing beta-carotene, lutein, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin. The risk of breast cancer approximately doubled among subjects with blood levels of beta-carotene at the lowest quartile, as compared with those at the highest quartile (odds ratio = 2.21; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29, 3.79). The risk associated with the other carotenoids was similar, varying between 2.08 (95% CI: 1.11, 3.90) for lutein and 1.68 (95% CI: 0.99, 2.86) for beta-cryptoxanthin. The odds ratio for the lower quartile of total carotenoids was 2.31 (95% CI: 1.35, 3.96). These observations offer evidence that a low intake of carotenoids, through poor diet and/or lack of vitamin supplementation, may be associated with increased risk of breast cancer and may have public health relevance for people with markedly low intakes.  相似文献

Antioxidants, particularly carotenoids and tocopherols, may protect against cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary and adipose tissue carotenoids and tocopherols are associated with the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Cases (n = 1456) of a first acute MI were identified and matched by age, sex, and residence to randomly selected population controls (n = 1456) living in Costa Rica. Carotenoids and tocopherols were measured in adipose tissue using HPLC. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated FFQ. Anthropometrical and lifestyle data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Subjects were distributed into quintiles of intake or adipose tissue concentration of carotenoids or tocopherols. The lowest quintile was used as the referent in conditional logistic regression analyses. Adipose tissue beta-carotene showed a significant inverse relation with MI risk; the odds ratio (OR) comparing the highest to the lowest quintile was 0.70 (95% CI: 0.51-0.96, P for trend = 0.02). Intake of fruits and vegetables that are rich in beta-carotene was also inversely associated with the risk of MI (OR = 0.74; CI: 0.54-1.01, P for trend = 0.09). In contrast, lutein + zeaxanthin in adipose tissue (OR = 1.46; CI: 1.05-2.05, P for trend = 0.02) and diet (OR = 1.18; CI: 0.88-1.57, P for trend = 0.02) was positively associated with MI risk. MI risk was not associated with any of the other carotenoids or tocopherols in the diet or adipose tissue. Thus, the inverse association between beta-carotene and MI risk suggests that beta-carotene protects against MI or it is a marker of some protective factor in foods containing beta-carotene. The mechanism underlying the positive association between lutein + zeaxanthin and the risk of MI warrants investigation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Dietary antioxidants, including carotenoids, are hypothesized to decrease the risk of age-related cataracts by preventing oxidation of proteins or lipids within the lens. However, prospective epidemiologic data concerning this phenomenon are limited. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine prospectively the association between carotenoid and vitamin A intakes and cataract extraction in men. DESIGN: US male health professionals (n = 36644) who were 45-75 y of age in 1986 were included in this prospective cohort study. Others were subsequently included as they became 45 y of age. A detailed dietary questionnaire was used to assess intake of carotenoids and other nutrients. During 8 y of follow-up, 840 cases of senile cataract extraction were documented. RESULTS: We observed a modestly lower risk of cataract extraction in men with higher intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin but not of other carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, and beta-cryptoxanthin) or vitamin A after other potential risk factors, including age and smoking, were controlled for. Men in the highest fifth of lutein and zeaxanthin intake had a 19% lower risk of cataract relative to men in the lowest fifth (relative risk: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.65, 1.01; P for trend = 0.03). Among specific foods high in carotenoids, broccoli and spinach were most consistently associated with a lower risk of cataract. CONCLUSIONS: Lutein and zeaxanthin may decrease the risk of cataracts severe enough to require extraction, although this relation appears modest in magnitude. The present findings add support for recommendations to consume vegetables and fruit high in carotenoids daily.  相似文献

A study of 387 cases and 670 controls from four Latin American countries evaluated the hypothesis that lower serum levels of eight micronutrients were associated with a higher risk of invasive cervical cancer. The serologic analyses were restricted to a sample of subjects with stage I and II disease to minimize effects of the disease on the serologic markers. Ninety-four percent of eligible subjects donated blood samples, which were analyzed for carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Cases did not differ significantly from controls in mean serum levels of retinol, cryptoxanthin, lycopene, alpha-carotene, lutein, or alpha-tocopherol. The mean level of beta-carotene was lower and the mean level of gamma-tocopherol was higher among cases as compared with controls. After adjustment for age, study site, sexual and reproductive behavior, socioeconomic status, screening practices, detection of human papillomavirus types 16/18, cholesterol, and triglycerides, a trend of decreasing risk was associated with higher levels of beta-carotene (p for trend = 0.05), with the adjusted odds ratio decreasing to 0.72 for the highest versus the lowest quartile. beta-Carotene results were similar by stage of disease, which argues against an effect of disease progression on nutrient values. Unexpectedly, increasing risks were observed as the level of gamma-tocopherol increased (odds ratio = 2.09; p for trend = 0.03); however, levels were higher among stage II cases as compared with stage I cases, suggesting a metabolic alteration resulting from the disease process. The concordance in the strength and direction of the blood and dietary results, presented in the accompanying report (Herrero R, Potischman N, Brinton LA, et al., American Journal of Epidemiology 1991;134:1335-46), supports a role for beta-carotene or foods rich in beta-carotene in the etiology of cervical cancer. This study also indicates that simultaneous analysis using serologic and dietary nutrient indicators allows better discrimination of the association.  相似文献

We quantified the effect of antioxidant vitamins in gastric cancer risk, taking into account Helicobacter pylori seropositivity and overall fruit and vegetable intake. Incident cases were identified in two large hospitals in Porto, Portugal, and controls were randomly sampled among city dwellers. Food intake was assessed with a previously validated semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. A commercially available chromatographic immunoassay was used for the detection of immunoglobulin G antibodies. Complete questionnaire information and serum samples were available for 233 cases and 311 controls. Compared with subjects in the lowest tertile of dietary intake, the odds ratios (ORs) for those in the highest were 0.85 (95% confidence interval, CI = 0.45-1.60) for vitamin C, 1.04 (95% CI = 0.60-1.80) for vitamin E, and 1.33 (95% CI = 0.77-2.30) for provitamin A carotenoids after further adjusting for fruit and vegetable consumption. Fruit and vegetables remained an independent protective factor (OR = 0.45; 95% CI = 0.23-0.89) after further adjustment for the intake of antioxidant vitamins. H. pylori status had no significant interaction with dietary items. Factors other than H. pylori infection and intake of vitamin C and provitamin A carotenoids seem to account for the inverse association between fruit and vegetable consumption and gastric cancer.  相似文献

Findings from several beta-carotene supplementation trials were unexpected and conflicted with most observational studies. Carotenoids other than beta-carotene are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables and may play a role in this important malignancy, but previous findings regarding the five major carotenoids are inconsistent. The authors analyzed the associations between dietary beta-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein/zeaxanthin, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, vitamin A, serum beta-carotene, and serum retinol and the lung cancer risk in the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study cohort of male smokers conducted in southwestern Finland between 1985 and 1993. Of the 27,084 male smokers aged 50-69 years who completed the 276-food item dietary questionnaire at baseline, 1,644 developed lung cancer during up to 14 years of follow-up. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate relative risks and 95% confidence intervals. Consumption of fruits and vegetables was associated with a lower lung cancer risk (relative risk = 0.73, 95% confidence interval: 0.62, 0.86, highest vs. lowest quintile). Lower risks of lung cancer were observed for the highest versus the lowest quintiles of lycopene (28%), lutein/zeaxanthin (17%), beta-cryptoxanthin (15%), total carotenoids (16%), serum beta-carotene (19%), and serum retinol (27%). These findings suggest that high fruit and vegetable consumption, particularly a diet rich in carotenoids, tomatoes, and tomato-based products, may reduce the risk of lung cancer.  相似文献

Data from epidemiologic, experimental, and animal studies indicate that diet plays an important role in the etiology of gastric cancer. High intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, lycopene and lycopene-containing food products, and potentially vitamin C and selenium may reduce the risk for gastric cancer. Data also suggest that high intake of nitrosamines, processed meat products, salt and salted foods, and overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk for gastric cancer. However, current data provide little support for an association of beta-carotene, vitamin E, and alcohol consumption with risk for gastric cancer.  相似文献

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in Western countries. Nutrition has a significant role in the prevention of many chronic diseases such as CVD, cancers, and degenerative brain diseases. The major risk and protective factors in the diet are well recognized, but interesting new candidates continue to appear. It is well known that a greater intake of fruit and vegetables can help prevent heart diseases and mortality. Because fruit, berries, and vegetables are chemically complex foods, it is difficult to pinpoint any single nutrient that contributes the most to the cardioprotective effects. Several potential components that are found in fruit, berries, and vegetables are probably involved in the protective effects against CVD. Potential beneficial substances include antioxidant vitamins, folate, fiber, and potassium. Antioxidant compounds found in fruit and vegetables, such as vitamin C, carotenoids, and flavonoids, may influence the risk of CVD by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol in arteries. In this review, the role of main dietary carotenoids, ie, lycopene, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin, in the prevention of heart diseases is discussed. Although it is clear that a higher intake of fruit and vegetables can help prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with heart diseases, more information is needed to ascertain the association between the intake of single nutrients, such as carotenoids, and the risk of CVD. Currently, the consumption of carotenoids in pharmaceutical forms for the treatment or prevention of heart diseases cannot be recommended.  相似文献

The conflicting evidence of the relation between beta-carotene and lung cancer in humans serves as a poignant case study with respect to what types of evidence are sufficient to support or change a nutrition recommendation. This article is a review of the available evidence of the relation between beta-carotene and lung cancer, including data regarding beta-carotene intake (from diet and supplements), beta-carotene biochemical status, and vegetable and fruit consumption, and a discussion of the role of this evidence in making nutrition recommendations. More than 30 case-control and cohort studies were conducted over many years in various populations and indicated that people who eat more vegetables and fruit, foods rich in carotenoids, and carotenoids (beta-carotene in particular), as well as those with higher blood beta-carotene concentrations, have a lower risk of lung cancer than those who eat fewer such foods or have lower beta-carotene concentrations. In contrast, the intervention results from large, controlled trials of beta-carotene supplementation do not support the observed beneficial associations or a role for supplemental beta-carotene in lung cancer prevention; instead, they provide striking evidence for adverse effects (ie, excess lung cancer incidence and overall mortality) in smokers. The findings require that caution be exercised in recommending supplemental beta-carotene, particularly for smokers, and argue against changing the vegetable-fruit recommendations in the direction of greater nutrient specificity. This case study of beta-carotene and lung cancer stresses the importance of having results from at least one, and preferably more, large, randomized intervention trial before public health recommendations concerning micronutrient supplementation are considered.  相似文献

The diets of 158 tobacco/betel quid-chewing women diagnosed with oral premalignant lesions and 155 quid-chewing but lesion-free controls, frequency matched for age, tobacco/betel habits, and socioeconomic status, were assessed using a food frequency survey. Index scores generated from the food frequency survey indicated that the mean levels of consumption for foods of animal origin (p < 0.001), total vegetables and fruit (p = 0.001), vegetables alone (p = 0.006), fruits alone (p = 0.006), and green leafy vegetables (p = 0.015) were significantly lower in cases than in controls. The mean index score for cobalamin (vitamin B12) was lower in cases with a borderline significance (p = 0.05), whereas the indexes for folate and carotene were not significantly different. The analysis of index scores estimating the number of 100-g servings per week of foods of animal origin [meat, eggs, milk, curd (yogurt), fish] consumed revealed that women who ate fewer servings were more likely to have premalignant lesions than those who ate more animal foods [odds ratio (OR) 3.38, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.07-5.54, p = 0.001]. The risk for low consumption of vegetables was not as significant as that for foods of animal origin. However, those eating low levels of vegetables and low levels of foods of animal origin were at the greatest risk for lesions (OR 5.38, 95% CI 1.72-22.17, p < 0.05). In South Indian female tobacco/betel chewers, a diet deficient in foods of animal origin appears to be a more significant risk factor for oral premalignancy than is a diet deficient in fruits and vegetables.  相似文献

The effects of beta-carotene and several other dietary factors on the risk of cervical dysplasia were evaluated in a case-control study. Cases (n = 257) were the participants of a randomized trial assessing the effect of beta-carotene on cervical dysplasia. Controls (n = 705) were sampled from the general population. A postal questionnaire was used to obtain information about the frequency of consumption of several food items containing beta-carotene, retinol, vitamin C and dietary fibre. Information was also collected about other risk factors for cervical dysplasia, in order to adjust for possible confounding. To our surprise, we observed an increased risk of cervical dysplasia for women with a high intake of beta-carotene (odds ratio (OR) = 2.31; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.27-4.19). No relationship was found with the intake of retinol, while both vitamin C and dietary fibre showed a weak and not statistically significant inverse relationship with cervical dysplasia. These findings do not support the hypothesis that beta-carotene protects against cervical dysplasia.  相似文献

The association of antioxidant vitamins and trace elements from foods and supplements with risk of rheumatoid arthritis was evaluated in a prospective cohort study of 29,368 women who were aged 55-69 years at baseline in 1986. Through 1997, 152 cases of rheumatoid arthritis were identified. After controlling for other risk factors, greater intakes (highest tertile vs. lowest) of supplemental vitamin C (relative risk (RR) = 0.70, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48, 1.09; p-trend = 0.08) and supplemental vitamin E (RR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.47, 1.12; p-trend = 0.06) were inversely associated with rheumatoid arthritis. There was no association with total carotenoids, alpha- or beta-carotene, lycopene, or lutein/zeaxanthin, while there was an inverse association with beta-cryptoxanthin (RR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.39, 0.90; p-trend = 0.01). Greater use of supplemental zinc (RR = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.17, 0.88; p-trend = 0.03) was inversely associated with rheumatoid arthritis, while any use of supplemental copper (RR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.28, 1.03) and manganese (RR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.23, 1.07) showed suggestive inverse associations with rheumatoid arthritis. Greater intakes of fruit (RR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.46, 1.12; p-trend = 0.13) and cruciferous vegetables (RR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.42, 1.01; p-trend = 0.07) also exhibited trends toward inverse associations with risk. When the antioxidants were modeled together, only beta-cryptoxanthin and supplemental zinc were statistically significant predictors. Intake of certain antioxidant micronutrients, particularly beta-cryptoxanthin and supplemental zinc, and possibly diets high in fruits and cruciferous vegetables, may be protective against the development of rheumatoid arthritis.  相似文献

The epidemiologic evidence that carotenoids are involved in cancer etiology is evaluated. Low intake of vegetables and fruits and carotenoids is consistently associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in both prospective and retrospective studies. In addition, low levels of serum or plasma beta-carotene are consistently associated with the subsequent development of lung cancer. The simplest explanation is that beta-carotene is indeed protective. Since retinol is not related in a similar manner to lung cancer risk, beta-carotene seems to play a role that does not require its conversion into vitamin A. However, the importance of other carotenoids, other constituents of vegetables and fruits, and other nutrients whose levels in the blood are partially correlated with those of beta-carotene has not been adequately explored. In addition, smoking, a powerful risk factor for lung cancer, is associated with reduced intake of carotenoids and lowered blood levels of beta-carotene and has not always been adequately controlled in these analyses. Prospective and retrospective studies suggest that carotenoids may reduce the risk of certain other cancers; however, too few studies have looked at these sites to examine the consistency of the evidence. Although clinical trials of the efficacy of beta-carotene in cancer prevention are underway, it is still necessary and prudent to continue well-designed prospective and retrospective studies of the carotenoid hypothesis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Antioxidant status can be used as a biomarker to assess chronic disease risk and diet can modulate antioxidant defence. OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of vegetarian diet and variations in the habitual intakes of foods and nutrients on blood antioxidants. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Thirty-one vegetarians (including six vegans) and 58 omnivores, non-smokers, in Northern Ireland. DESIGN: A diet history method was used to assess habitual diet. Antioxidant vitamins, carotenoids, uric acid, zinc- and ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) were measured in fasting plasma and activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) and level of reduced glutathione (GSH) were measured in erythrocytes. RESULTS: Vegetarians had approximately 15% higher levels of plasma carotenoids compared with omnivores, including lutein (P< or =0.05), alpha-cryptoxanthin P< or =0.05), lycopene (NS), alpha-carotene (NS) and beta-carotene (NS). The levels/activities of all other antioxidants measured were similar between vegetarians and omnivores. Total intake of fruits, vegetables and fruit juices was positively associated with plasma levels of several carotenoids and vitamin C. Intake of vegetables was positively associated with plasma lutein, alpha-cryptoxanthin, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, whereas intake of fruits was positively associated with plasma beta-cryptoxanthin. Intake of tea and wine was positively associated with FRAP value, whereas intake of herbal tea associated positively with plasma vitamin C. Intakes of meat and fish were positively associated with plasma uric acid and FRAP value. CONCLUSIONS: The overall antioxidant status was similar between vegetarians and omnivores. Good correlations were found between intakes of carotenoids and their respective status in blood.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated carotenoids and vitamins C and E in association with the risk of breast cancers defined by estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status. OBJECTIVE: We examined the associations between dietary and supplemental intakes of these nutrients and risk of breast cancers jointly defined by both ER and PR status among postmenopausal women. DESIGN: Our investigation was conducted in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study. After following 84 805 women for an average of 7.6 y, 2879 incident invasive breast cancer cases had been ascertained, of whom 2509 had receptor data. We used Cox proportional hazards models to assess the associations of interest. RESULTS: Dietary alpha-carotene (highest versus lowest quintile: RR = 0.83; 95% CL = 0.70, 0.99; P for trend = 0.019), beta-carotene (highest versus lowest quintile: RR = 0.78; 95% CL = 0.66, 0.94; P for trend = 0.021), and lycopene (highest versus lowest quintile: RR = 0.85; 95% CL = 0.73, 1.00; P for trend = 0.064) were inversely associated with risk of ER+PR+breast cancer, but not with other breast cancer groups jointly defined by ER and PR status. Total or supplemental beta-carotene and dietary intakes of lutein+zeaxanthin and beta-cryptoxanthin were not associated with breast cancers defined by ER and PR status. Vitamin E (regardless of source) and dietary vitamin C were not associated with breast cancer. However, total and supplemental vitamin C intake had weak positive associations with breast cancer overall. CONCLUSION: Dietary intake of certain carotenoids might be differentially associated with risk of invasive breast cancers jointly defined by ER and PR status among postmenopausal women.  相似文献

In a dozen case-control and cohort studies, high intake of fruits and vegetables containing carotenoids has been associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer. In contrast, little relation has been found between intake of preformed vitamin A and this disease. Although initial studies suggested that persons with lower levels of serum retinol have higher future rates of lung cancer, this idea was not confirmed in subsequent investigations. Prediagnostic levels of beta-carotene in blood, however, have been inversely related with risk of lung cancer. Available data thus strongly support the hypothesis that dietary carotenoids reduce the risk of lung cancer, but the data are also compatible with the possibility that some other factor in these foods is responsible for the lower risk. Even if ultimately shown to be casual, the relation between diet and lung cancer is modest compared with the deleterious effect of cigarette smoking.  相似文献
