Two previous studies suggest that cigarette smoking reduces acoustic neuroma risk; however, an association between use of snuff tobacco and acoustic neuroma has not been investigated previously. The authors conducted a case-control study in Sweden from 2002 to 2007, in which 451 cases and 710 population-based controls completed questionnaires. Cases and controls were matched on gender, region, and age within 5 years. The authors estimated odds ratios using conditional logistic regression analyses, adjusted for education and tobacco use (snuff use in the smoking analysis and smoking in the snuff analysis). The risk of acoustic neuroma was greatly reduced in male current smokers (odds ratio (OR) = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.23, 0.74) and moderately reduced in female current smokers (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.40, 1.23). In contrast, current snuff use among males was not associated with risk of acoustic neuroma (OR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.57, 1.55). The authors' findings are consistent with previous reports of lower acoustic neuroma risk among current cigarette smokers than among never smokers. The absence of an association between snuff use and acoustic neuroma suggests that some constituent of tobacco smoke other than nicotine may confer protection against acoustic neuroma.  相似文献

A Canadian case-control study explored the etiology of thyroid cancer, including occupational exposure. Analysis of job history from 1272 thyroid cancer patients and 2666 controls revealed statistically significant risks among the following occupations: Wood Processing, Pulp and Papermaking (odds ratio [OR] = 2.54, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.11-5.83); Sales and Service (OR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.05-1.52); and Clerical (OR = 0.81, 95% CI = 0.67-0.97). ORs were adjusted for age, sex, province, cigarette smoking, education, self-reported exposure to radiation at work, and duration of employment. Exposure to ionizing radiation or electromagnetic fields at work (inferred from job histories) did not affect risk, nor did socioeconomic status, measured by education, income, or occupational prestige. Possible explanations for the results and further investigations are discussed.  相似文献

A small number of prior epidemiologic studies of occupational noise exposure based on self-report have suggested an association with acoustic neuroma. The goal of the present study was to further examine the association between noise exposure and acoustic neuroma by using an objective measure of exposure in the form of a job exposure matrix. A total of 793 acoustic neuroma cases aged 21-84 years were identified between 1987 and 1999 from the Swedish Cancer Registry. The 101,756 controls randomly selected from the study base were frequency matched to cases on age, sex, and calendar year of diagnosis. Occupational information, available for 599 of the cases and 73,432 of the controls, was obtained from censuses and was linked to a job exposure matrix based on actual noise measurements. All risk estimates were close to unity, regardless of noise exposure level or parameter. The overall odds ratio for exposure to > or = 85 dB of noise was 0.89 (95% confidence interval: 0.64, 1.23). Contrary to previous study results, the present findings did not demonstrate an increased acoustic neuroma risk related to occupational noise exposure even after allowing for a long latency period. The effect of nondifferential misclassification of exposure must be considered a potential cause of the negative findings.  相似文献

Exposure to solvents has been reported to increase the risk of scleroderma. The authors investigated the relation between exposures to solvents in occupational and hobby settings and the development of scleroderma among women in a case-control study with population-based controls in Michigan (1980-1991) and Ohio (1980-1992). A total of 660 cases and 2,227 frequency-matched controls were interviewed by telephone. Diagnoses of scleroderma were verified by medical records review. Paint thinners and removers were significantly associated with scleroderma both by self-report (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4, 2.6) and after expert review (OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.5, 2.6). Other petroleum distillates (gasoline and mineral spirits) were not significantly associated with scleroderma after controlling for other correlated exposures in multivariable analyses. Trichloroethylene was associated with scleroderma both by self-report (OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 0.8, 4.8) and after expert review (OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 0.6, 6.6), but not significantly. Analyses by duration of exposure found that risk increased with the duration of use of any of the solvents (OR = 1.01/year of exposure, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.02), but there was no evidence of increasing risk with increasing duration of exposure for any specific solvent studied. In summary, exposures to paint thinners and removers were associated with scleroderma in women but showed no evidence of increasing risk with increasing duration. Exposures to other specific chlorinated and nonchlorinated hydrocarbon solvents were not clearly associated with scleroderma.  相似文献

Mortality of mental disorders in relation to potential pesticide exposure   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Some studies have suggested a role of pesticide exposure in the development of neurobehavioral disorders. This case-control study examined the association between mortality from mental disorders and occupational exposure to pesticides. The study population consisted of 7756 deaths and 330,452 eligible controls identified from US death certificate files for the years 1988 through 1992. Exposure assignment was based on job title reported on the death certificates. Employment in jobs potentially involving pesticide exposure was weakly associated with the risk of death from mental disorders (odds ratio [OR] = 1.46; 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.33-1.60). This association was stronger among women (OR = 2.65; 95% CI = 1.89-3.71), in particular for deaths from neurotic disorders (OR = 4.32; 95% CI = 2.44-7.64). These results must be interpreted with caution, however, because the impact of social and work-related factors other than pesticide exposure is not known.  相似文献

A population-based case-control study involving 601 incidentcases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and 717 controls was conductedin 1996–2000 among Connecticut women to examine associationswith exposure to organic solvents. A job-exposure matrix wasused to assess occupational exposures. Increased risk of NHLwas associated with occupational exposure to chlorinated solvents(odds ratio (OR) = 1.4, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1, 1.8)and carbon tetrachloride (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.3, 4.0). Thoseever exposed to any organic solvent in work settings had a borderlineincreased risk of NHL (OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.6); moreover,a significantly increased risk was observed for those with averageprobability of exposure to any organic solvent at medium-highlevel (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1, 1.9). A borderline increased riskwas also found for ever exposure to formaldehyde (OR = 1.3,95% CI: 1.0, 1.7) in work settings. Risk of NHL increased withincreasing average intensity (P = 0.01), average probability(P < 0.01), cumulative intensity (P = 0.01), and cumulativeprobability (P < 0.01) level of organic solvent and withaverage probability level (P = 0.02) and cumulative intensitylevel of chlorinated solvent (P = 0.02). Analyses by NHL subtypeshowed a risk pattern for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma similarto that for overall NHL, with stronger evidence of an associationwith benzene exposure. Results suggest an increased risk ofNHL associated with occupational exposure to organic solventsfor women. case-control studies; lymphoma, non-Hodgkin; risk factors; solvents  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study examined occupational risks for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and soft-tissue sarcoma among African American and White men. METHODS: Race-specific multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted using data from a large US population-based case-control study. RESULTS: Significant occupational risks were limited to African Americans; chromium was associated with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (odds ratio [OR] = 3.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2, 12.9) and wood dust was associated with Hodgkin's disease (OR = 4.6, 95% CI = 1.6, 13.3) and soft-tissue sarcoma (OR = 3.7, 95% CI = 1.6, 8.6). CONCLUSIONS: Race-specific occupational risk factors for cancer were evident only among African American men. This may reflect racial disparities in levels of exposure to occupational carcinogens.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that inhalation of metal fume reversibly increases susceptibility to pneumonia, the authors conducted a case-control study. Men aged 20-64 years, admitted to 11 hospitals in West Midlands, England, with community-acquired pneumonia during 1996-1999 were interviewed about their lifetime occupational history, exposure to metal fume, and potential confounding factors. Similar information was collected from controls admitted to the same hospitals with nonrespiratory illness. For cases, exposures were timed relative to the onset of their illness (on average, 6 months before interview). Exposure histories for controls were censored 6 months before interview. Interviews were completed by 525 cases and 1,122 controls (response rates of 74% and 99%). Pneumonia was associated with reported occupational exposure to metal fume in the previous year (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1, 2.4) but not in earlier periods (OR = 1.1). The risk was highest for lobar pneumonia and recent exposure to ferrous fume (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.3). The association was not specific to any one microorganism. These findings support the hypothesis that ferrous and possibly other metal fumes reversibly predispose to infectious pneumonia. Research should now focus on the underlying mechanisms and prevention.  相似文献

In a recently completed US case-control study (Children's Oncology Group, 1993-2001) with 253 cases and 394 controls, the authors investigated the association between parental occupational exposure to pesticides and risk of childhood germ-cell tumors. Information on occupational pesticide exposure was collected using job-specific module questionnaires and assessed by an experienced industrial hygienist. Odds ratios for childhood germ-cell tumors associated with maternal exposures before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after the birth of the index child were 1.0 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8, 1.4), 1.1 (95% CI: 0.7, 1.6), and 1.3 (95% CI: 0.9, 1.8), respectively. Paternal exposures before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and after the birth of the index child were not related to germ-cell tumors (odds ratios (ORs) were 0.9 (95% CI: 0.7, 1.2), 0.8 (95% CI: 0.5, 1.2), and 0.8 (95% CI: 0.5, 1.3), respectively). When both parents had ever been occupationally exposed to pesticides before the index pregnancy, the odds ratio was 0.8 (95% CI: 0.4, 1.3). Subgroup analyses showed a positive association between maternal exposure to herbicides during the postnatal period and risk of germ-cell tumors in girls (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.0, 5.2) and an inverse association between paternal exposure to pesticides during the index pregnancy and germ-cell tumors in boys (OR = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.1, 1.0). This study did not provide strong evidence supporting a relation between parental pesticide exposure in the workplace and risk of germ-cell tumors among offspring.  相似文献

Occupation, pesticide exposure and risk of multiple myeloma   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
OBJECTIVES: This population-based case-control study examined the relationship between occupation, living or working on a farm, pesticide exposure, and the risk of multiple myeloma. METHODS: The study included 573 persons newly diagnosed with myeloma and 2131 controls. Information was obtained on sociodemographic factors, occupational history, and history of living and working on a farm. Occupational and industrial titles were coded by standardized classification systems. A job-exposure matrix was developed for occupational pesticide exposure. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Farmers and farm workers had odds ratios of 1.9 (95% CI 0.8-4.6) and 1.4 (95% CI 0.8-2.3), respectively. An odds ratio of 1.7 (95% CI 1.0-2.7) was observed for sheep farm residents or workers, whereas no increased risks were found for cattle, beef, pig, or chicken farm residents or workers. A modestly increased risk was observed for pesticides (OR 1.3, 95% CI 0.9-1.8). Significantly increased risks were found for pharmacists, dieticians and therapists (OR 6.1, 95% CI 1.7-22.5), service occupations (OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.02-1.7), roofers (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.1-9.8), precision printing occupations (OR 10.1, 95% CI 1.03-99.8), heating equipment operators (OR 4.7, 95% CI 1.4-15.8), and hand molders and casters (OR 3.0, 95% CI 1.0-8.4). CONCLUSIONS: A modest increased risk of multiple myeloma is suggested for occupational pesticide exposure. The increased risk for sheep farm residents or workers indicates that certain animal viruses may be involved in myeloma risk.  相似文献

The enzyme delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD), which catalyzes the second step of heme synthesis, can be inhibited by several chemicals, including lead, a potential risk factor for brain tumors, particularly meningioma. In this study we examined whether the ALAD G177C polymorphism in the gene coding for ALAD is associated with risk of intracranial tumors of the brain and nervous system. We use data from a case-control study with 782 incident brain tumor cases and 799 controls frequency matched on hospital, age, sex, race/ethnicity, and residential proximity to the hospital. Blood samples were drawn and DNA subsequently sent for genotyping for 73% of subjects. ALAD genotype was determined for 94% of these samples (355 glioma, 151 meningioma, 67 acoustic neuroma, and 505 controls). Having one or more copy of the ALAD2 allele was associated with increased risk for meningioma [odds ratio (OR) = 1.6; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.0-2.6], with the association appearing stronger in males (OR = 3.5; 95% CI, 1.3-9.2) than in females (OR = 1.2; 95% CI, 0.7-2.2). No increased risk associated with the ALAD2 variant was observed for glioma or acoustic neuroma. These findings suggest that the ALAD2 allele may increase genetic susceptibility to meningioma.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the association of selected occupational exposures with leukemia risk. METHODS: Population-based case-control study of 486 leukemia subjects and 502 healthy controls residing in Shanghai from 1987 to 1989. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) were calculated for the association between occupational factors and leukemia risk. RESULTS: Significant increase in leukemia risk was observed in chemical manufacturing industry workers (OR=3.1, 95% CI=1.0-9.8). Increased risks for leukemia were observed from self-reported exposures to benzene (OR=1.7, 95% CI=1.1-2.6), radioactive materials (OR=3.7, 95% CI=1.3-10.2), synthetic fiber dust (OR=2.0, 95% CI=1.2-3.5), and toluene (OR=1.6, 95% CI=1.0-2.5). Dose-response relations of leukemia risk was observed with the duration of exposure to benzene (OR=3.3, 95% CI=1.6-6.9 for >or=15 years exposure; p for trend<0.01), radioactive materials (OR=5.2, 95% CI=1.1-24.7 for >or=15 years exposure; p for trend=0.02), paints (OR=2.3, 95% CI=1.2-4.7 for >or=15 years exposure; p for trend=0.09), and toluene (OR=2.9, 95% CI=1.3-6.7 for >or=15 years exposure; p for trend=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Adult leukemia risk may be associated with working in the chemical industry, and exposure to benzene, synthetic fiber dust, radioactive materials, and toluene in the study population.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This case-control study was conducted to estimate the renal cell cancer (RCC) risk for exposure to occupation-related agents, besides other suspected risk factors. METHODS: In a population-based multicentre study, 935 incident RCC cases and 4298 controls matched for region, sex, and age were interviewed between 1991 and 1995 for their occupational history and lifestyle habits. Agent-specific exposure was expert-rated with two job-exposure matrices and a job task-exposure matrix. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate smoking adjusted odds ratios (OR). RESULTS: Very long exposures in the chemical, rubber, and printing industries were associated with risk for RCC. Males considered as 'substantially exposed to organic solvents' showed a significant excess risk (OR = 1.6, 95% CI : 1.1-2.3). In females substantial exposure to solvents was also a significant risk factor (OR = 2.1, 95% CI : 1.0-4.4). Excess risks were shown for high exposure to cadmium (OR = 1.4, 95% CI : 1.1-1.8, in men, OR = 2.5, 95% CI : 1.2-5.3 in women), for substantial exposure to lead (OR = 1.5, 95% CI : 1.0-2.3, in men, OR = 2.6, 95% CI : 1.2-5.5, in women) and to solder fumes (OR = 1.5, 95% CI : 1.0-2.4, in men). In females, an excess risk for the task 'soldering, welding, milling' was found (OR = 3.0, 95% CI : 1.1-7.8). Exposure to paints, mineral oils, cutting fluids, benzene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and asbestos showed an association with RCC development. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that substantial exposure to metals and solvents may be nephrocarcinogenic. There is evidence for a gender-specific susceptibility of the kidneys.  相似文献

Lifetime job histories from a population-based, case-control study of gliomas diagnosed among adults in the San Francisco Bay area between August 1991 and April 1994 were evaluated to assess occupational risk factors. Occupational data for 476 cases and 462 controls were analyzed, with adjustment for age, gender, education, and race. Imprecise increased risks were observed for physicians and surgeons (odds ratio (OR) = 3.5, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.7, 17.6), artists (OR = 1.9, 95% CI: 0.5, 6.5), foundry and smelter workers (OR = 2.6, 95% CI: 0.5, 13.1), petroleum and gas workers (OR = 4.9, 95% CI: 0.6, 42.2), and painters (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 0.5, 4.9). Legal and social service workers, shippers, janitors, motor vehicle operators, and aircraft operators had increased odds ratios only with longer duration of employment. Physicians and surgeons, foundry and smelter workers, petroleum and gas workers, and painters showed increased risk for both astrocytic and nonastrocytic tumors. Artists and firemen had increased risk for astrocytic tumors only, while messengers, textile workers, aircraft operators, and vehicle manufacturing workers showed increased risk only for nonastrocytic tumors. Despite study limitations, including small numbers for many of the occupational groups, a high percentage of proxy respondents among cases, and lack of specific exposure information, associations were observed for several occupations previously reported to be at higher risk for brain tumors generally and gliomas specifically.  相似文献

Between 1987 and 2005, the authors conducted a nested case-control study based on the Swedish Multi-Generation Register to investigate whether early life exposures, namely, maternal age at delivery and exposure to siblings, are associated with an increased risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study comprised 768 ALS cases and five controls per case matched by birth year and gender. Odds ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals for ALS were estimated by conditional logistic regression modeling. Low maternal age (< or =20 years) and high maternal age (> or =41 years) were both associated with higher risk of ALS (odds ratio (OR) = 1.5, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1, 2.0 and OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1, 2.4, respectively). The relative risk of ALS increased slightly with increasing number of younger siblings (OR = 1.1, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.1; p = 0.02). Children whose first younger sibling was born after the age of 6 years had the greatest relative risk (OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.2, 2.7). Exposure to older siblings was not associated with the risk of ALS. Although the strength of the observed associations was modest, these results provided further support for the theory that early life exposures might contribute to the disease pathogenesis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This multicentre population-based case-control study was conducted to estimate the urothelial cancer risk for occupational exposure to aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and chlorinated hydrocarbons besides other suspected risk factors. METHODS: In a population-based multicentre study, 1035 incident urothelial cancer cases and 4298 controls matched for region, sex, and age were interviewed between 1991 and 1995 for their occupational history and lifestyle habits. Exposure to the agents under study was self-assessed as well as expert-rated with two job-exposure matrices and a job task-exposure matrix. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate smoking adjusted odds ratios (OR) and to control for study centre and age. RESULTS: Urothelial cancer risk following exposure to aromatic amines was only slightly elevated. Among males, substantial exposures to PAH as well as to chlorinated solvents and their corresponding occupational settings were associated with significantly elevated risks after adjustment for smoking (PAH exposure, assessed with a job-exposure matrix: OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1-2.3, exposure to chlorinated solvents, assessed with a job task-exposure matrix: OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.2-2.6). Metal degreasing showed an elevated urothelial cancer risk among males (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.4-3.8). In females also, exposure to chlorinated solvents indicated a urothelial cancer risk. Because of small numbers the risk evaluation for females should be treated with caution. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational exposure to aromatic amines could not be shown to be as strong a risk factor for urothelial carcinomas as in the past. A possible explanation for this finding is the reduction in exposure over the last 50 years. Our results strengthen the evidence that PAH may have a carcinogenic potential for the urothelium. Furthermore, our results indicate a urothelial cancer risk for the use of chlorinated solvents.  相似文献

The International Agency for Research on Cancer recently classified inorganic lead as a probable carcinogen, while organic lead remained unclassifiable. Uncertainty persists because of limited epidemiologic evidence. The authors addressed the relation between occupational exposure to lead and the risk of 11 types of cancer among men in a case-control study conducted in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the 1980s. Incident cases (n = 3,730) and general population controls (n = 533) were interviewed to elicit information on job history and potential confounders. Expert chemists translated each job into a list of substances to which the subject had potentially been exposed. Exposure to lead was classified into three categories: organic lead (3% of subjects ever exposed), inorganic lead (17%), and lead in gasoline emissions (39%). Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by logistic regression using two control groups: general population controls and cancer controls. Stomach cancer was associated with organic lead when the authors used population controls (odds ratio (OR) = 3.0, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.2, 7.3) and cancer controls (OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.1, 3.8) and with substantial exposure to lead in gasoline emissions when they used cancer controls (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.4, 5.9). There was no association with inorganic lead and little evidence for associations with other cancer types.  相似文献

A multicenter case-control study was conducted during 1999-2002 in four European countries (Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia) to evaluate the role of occupational exposures in risk of laryngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer. Male cancer cases (34 hypopharyngeal, 316 laryngeal) with full data on occupational history and nonoccupational factors were compared with 728 hospital controls for occupational exposure to 73 suspected carcinogens. Occupational history was evaluated by industrial hygienists blinded to case/control status. Elevated risks for ever exposure to coal dust were found for both hypopharyngeal (odds ratio (OR) = 4.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18, 14.89) and laryngeal (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 0.94, 3.47) cancer, with clear dose-response patterns. Inclusion of a 20-year lag in the analysis strengthened these associations. Hypopharyngeal cancer risk was also significantly associated with exposure to mild steel dust (OR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.39, 6.64) and iron compounds and fumes (OR = 2.74, 95% CI: 1.29, 5.84), without clear dose-response relations. Laryngeal cancer was significantly associated with exposure to hard-alloys dust (OR = 2.23, 95% CI: 1.08, 4.57) and chlorinated solvents (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.03, 4.61), without dose-response relations. A possible link between high formaldehyde exposure and laryngeal cancer was suggested. No association was found for exposure to asbestos or inorganic acid mists. These data indicate that occupational exposure to coal dust may play a role in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer. Other possible relations need further evaluation.  相似文献

The incidence of multiple myeloma is increasing in western countries, and several environmental and occupational risk factors have been suggested to explain this trend. A case-control study was conducted in order to investigate the relationship between occupation, exposure to chemicals, and risk of multiple myeloma. A total of 170 cases of multiple myeloma, 98 males and 72 females, aged 43-84 (mean age = 67 D.S. = 10), and 170 matched hospital controls (mean age = 68 D.S. = 9) were identified for the years 1970-1988. All subjects were interviewed about socioeconomic status, current or previous occupation, and if they had ever been exposed to one or more of a list of toxic substances. Exposure were grouped in 21 risk categories. Poor socioeconomic status was associated with a significant risk for multiple myeloma (OR = 2.8; 95% Confidence Interval: 1.61-3.05), as well as agricultural work (OR = 2.71; 95% CI: 1.87-4.42), and work in industry (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 2.00-5.75). Regarding toxic substance exposure, a significant association was found for asbestos (OR = 4.00; 95% CI: 2.02-8.05), mineral oils (OR = 3.00; 95% CI: 1.98-5.08), pesticides (OR = 2.83; 95% CI: 1.87-4.78), and radiation (OR = 9.00; 95% CI: 0.81-21.73). No significant association was demonstrated for alcohol intake and tobacco smoking. High odds ratios were also found for fertilizers, paints, cosmetics and/or hairdressing products, and dust. These findings agree with previously reported studies, suggesting a relationship between some occupational exposures and the risk of multiple myeloma. The data, however, require clarification in prospective, larger, population-based studies.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of parental occupational chemical exposures on incidence of neuroblastoma in offspring, the authors conducted a multicenter case-control study, using detailed exposure information that allowed examination of specific chemicals. Cases were 538 children aged 19 years who were newly diagnosed with confirmed neuroblastoma in 1992-1994 and were registered at any of 139 participating hospitals in the United States and Canada. One age-matched control for each of 504 cases was selected through random digit dialing. Self-reported exposures were reviewed by an industrial hygienist, and improbable exposures were reclassified. Effect estimates were calculated using unconditional logistic regression, adjusting for child's age and maternal demographic factors. Maternal exposures to most chemicals were not associated with neuroblastoma. Paternal exposures to hydrocarbons such as diesel fuel (odds ratio (OR) = 1.5; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8, 2.6), lacquer thinner (OR = 3.5; 95% CI: 1.6, 7.8), and turpentine (OR = 10.4; 95% CI: 2.4, 44.8) were associated with an increased incidence of neuroblastoma, as were exposures to wood dust (OR = 1.5; 95% CI: 0.8, 2.8) and solders (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 0.9, 7.1). The detailed exposure information available in this study has provided additional clues about the role of parental occupation as a risk factor for neuroblastoma.  相似文献
