睑板腺功能障碍(meibomian gland dysfunction,MGD)是一种慢性、弥漫性睑板腺异常,以睑板腺终末导管阻塞和(或)睑板腺分泌物的质量和数量改变为特征,可引起泪膜异常、眼部刺激症状、炎性反应以及眼表疾病.MGD发病主要与睑板腺分泌异常以及睑板腺终末导管阻塞有关,炎症是发病的关键.此外泪液特殊前蛋白和细胞凋亡在发病过程中也起到一定作用.  相似文献

目的:探讨强脉冲光(IPL)综合治疗睑缘炎相关角结膜病变(BKC)的短期疗效。

方法:选择2020-12/2021-12就诊于沧州爱尔眼科医院确诊为BKC的患者66例66眼(均选择病情严重的一眼进行研究),根据患者接受的临床治疗方式不同分为两组,对照组30例30眼,治疗组36例36眼,两组均在接受药物(给予0.1%氟米龙滴眼液、0.3%玻璃酸钠滴眼液、妥布霉素地塞米松眼膏点眼)治疗后1wk,以眼表状态作为基线水平,对照组继续进行药物治疗(给予0.1%氟米龙滴眼液、0.3%玻璃酸钠滴眼液点眼),治疗组在药物治疗基础上需在医院内定期进行IPL综合治疗(雾化熏蒸+IPL+睑板腺按摩+睑缘清洁+冷敷),每2wk 1次,共治疗4次。在药物治疗1wk后、IPL第1次治疗前(基线水平V1)和IPL第3次治疗前(V2)、IPL第4次治疗后2wk(V3)对两组患者进行随访,收集眼表疾病指数(OSDI)、裂隙灯下观察睑缘形态、睑板腺(MG)分泌物性质和分泌物排出难易程度、泪膜破裂时间(NIBUT)、眼红指数及角膜荧光素染色等数据,同时检查最佳矫正视力(BCVA)、眼压、眼前节及眼底,观察有无并发症的发生。

结果:两组患者治疗前OSDI、睑缘形态、MG分泌物性质和分泌物排出难易程度、NIBUT、眼表充血、角膜荧光素染色各项评分相比均无差异(P>0.05)。在V2、V3时,两组患者OSDI、睑缘形态、MG分泌物性质和分泌物排出难易程度、眼表充血分析、角膜荧光素染色各项评分均较治疗前(V1)下降,NIBUT较治疗前提高(均P<0.05),组间比较有差异(P<0.05),治疗组各项观察指标改善更明显。所有患者均未见明显并发症发生。

结论:IPL综合治疗可以减轻眼表炎症,改善睑板腺功能,可作为BKC物理治疗的新选择。  相似文献

PurposeThis exploratory study aimed to investigate the morphological and pathological alterations of the meibomian gland (MG) with the Staphylococcus aureus crude extracts (SACEs) treatment.MethodsMouse MG explants were cultured and differentiated with or without SACEs for 48 hours. Explant''s viability and cell death were determined by thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and TUNEL assay. MG morphology was observed by Hematoxylin and Eosin staining. Lipid droplet production was detected by Nile Red staining and LipidTox immunostaining. The pro-inflammatory cytokines were detected by ELISA. The relative gene and protein expression in MG explants was determined via quantitative RT-PCR, immunostaining, and immunoblotting. The components of the SACEs were analyzed by immunoblotting and silver staining.ResultsOur findings demonstrated that the SACEs treatment induced overexpression of keratin 1 (Krt1) in the ducts and acini of MG explants, accompanied by a decrease in viability and an increase in cell death in explants. Furthermore, the SACEs treatment dose-dependently increased the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in MG explants. The SACEs treatment induced activation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and AIM2 (absent in melanoma 2)/ASC (apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain) inflammasome signaling pathway in explants. Further investigation showed expression of the key adipogenesis-related molecule peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ was decreased after SACEs treatment. However, no change was found in the lipid synthesis of MG explants after treatment with the SACEs. Staphylococcal enterotoxins B (SEB) was detected in the SACEs. SEB induced the overexpression of Krt1 and IL-1β in ducts and acini of MG explants.ConclusionsOur findings confirm that Staphylococcus aureus induced hyperkeratinization and pro-inflammatory cytokines expression in MG explants ducts and acini. These effects might be mediated by SEB. Activation of the NF-κB and AIM2/ASC signaling pathway is involved in this process.  相似文献

Purpose

To demonstrate the usefulness of a video-meibography system featuring our newly designed probe.

Methods

This study utilized a newly designed probe featuring an obliquely inclined, T-shaped head containing 16 windows in the portion of the probe applied for emitting infrared light. The transilluminated structure of the meibomian gland is conducted to a highly sensitive, infrared charge-coupled device video camera and recorded digitally. The utility of the new probe was compared with the intraocular illumination probe traditionally used for meibography, both being applied to the eyelids of ten healthy volunteers and ten patients with meibomian gland dysfunction. The results were then analyzed.

Results

The newly designed probe facilitated eyelid eversion and transilluminated the meibomian gland structure effectively. Moreover, subjects experienced no irritation and only limited invasiveness when the new probe was applied.

Conclusions

Our meibography system featuring the newly designed probe provided greater ease of use, an improved visualization of the meibomian gland structure, and increased comfort for patients during the examination.?Jpn J Ophthalmol 2007;51:53–56 © Japanese Ophthalmological Society 2007  相似文献

目的 研究睑板腺功能障碍(MGD)患者睑缘形态与睑板腺形态的相关性。设计 横断面研究。研究对象 2019年北京同仁医院行Lipiflow热脉冲治疗前的MGD患者30例(30眼)。方法 通过眼前节照相技术和Oculus眼表分析仪拍摄睑缘和睑板腺,并依据睑缘形态、睑板腺主体部形态、睑板腺开口和分泌物性状进行分类。睑缘形态分为肥厚、充血、角化和变形;睑板腺主体部形态分为缺失、白色节段、导管膨胀、萎缩、扭曲和分叉;睑板腺开口形态分为圆形、脂帽、脂塞和脂栓。依上述形态进行评分,运用Spearman相关分析研究睑缘形态与睑板腺形态的相关性。主要指标 睑缘及睑板腺形态评分,睑缘及睑板腺形态学相关系数(r)。结果 睑板腺开口形态与分泌物性状之间呈正相关(r=0.590,P=0.001),睑板腺白色节段与睑板腺开口形态呈正相关(r=0.439,P=0.015);睑板腺萎缩和分叉与睑板腺的分泌物性状呈负相关(r=-0.349,-0.374;P=0.048,0.042)。在睑缘形态中,睑缘角化的评分与睑缘形态总评分呈正相关,且相关关系最强(r=0.842,P=0.000);睑缘角化与睑板腺开口形态改变呈正相关(r=0.517,P=0.003)。在睑板腺形态中,睑板腺白色节段评分与睑板腺总评分呈正相关,且相关关系最强(r=0.535,P=0.002)。结论 MGD患者睑缘形态与睑板腺形态部分存在相关关系。睑板腺白色节段作为睑板腺主体部的形态评估指标更为合理;睑缘角化作为睑缘的形态评估指标更为合理,且睑缘角化与睑板腺开口的形态改变相关。(眼科, 2020, 29: 355-360)  相似文献

Purpose:To assess the role of noninvasive ocular surface analyzer (OSA) in workup of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and to estimate hospital-based prevalence of MGD using this objective device.Methods:The study recruited 113 consecutive participants attending the ophthalmology outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital. All participants were administered a symptom questionnaire. Participants underwent a comprehensive ocular examination, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy and meibomian gland expression. Lipid layer thickness (LLT), noninvasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), and meibomian gland loss (MGL) were assessed using OSA. The presence of either or both reduced/absent meibum secretion and cloudy to toothpaste-like secretion was diagnosed as MGD.Results:Prevalence of total MGD was 57.52% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 48.3%–66.8%) and that of symptomatic MGD was 42.5% (95% CI: 33.2%–51.7%). Prevalence of total and symptomatic MGD was highest in those aged ≥50 years (P < 0.001 and P = 0.004, respectively). Computer vision syndrome increased the odds of symptomatic MGD (odds ratio [OR]: 4.3). NIBUT and MGL significantly differed in MGD and non-MGD groups (P = 0.023 and P < 0.001, respectively). LLT significantly differed between asymptomatic and symptomatic cases (P = 0.033). MGL >25% increased the odds of having MGD (OR: 19.1). Significant negative correlations were observed between MGL and NIBUT (P = 0.04) and between MGL and LLT (P = 0.02). MGL demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy for MGD (AUC = 0.827, sensitivity = 75.4%, specificity = 85.4%, cut-off value: ≥26%).Conclusion:MGD is a common disorder in adults attending the ophthalmology outpatient services of a tertiary eye care hospital. Incorporating noninvasive OSA in clinical practice can aid in rapid and reliable measurements of MGD-related parameters.  相似文献

目的:研究睑板腺功能障碍(MGD)患者术前行睑板腺理疗对白内障术后眼表的影响。

方法:采用前瞻性病例对照研究。选取我院2017-09/2018-07合并有MGD的白内障患者76例76眼,按照随机分组法分为两组,试验组术前1wk给予眼睑热敷、睑板腺按摩治疗(在院内进行一次全套治疗后,嘱患者每晚进行家庭热敷+睑板腺按摩治疗一次),对照组不给予任何治疗。两组患者均行白内障超声乳化联合人工晶状体植入术。术前(试验组为行睑板腺理疗前)、术后1wk,1mo行眼表综合分析仪检查非侵入性泪膜破裂时间(NITBUT)、泪河高度(TMH)等,LipiView检查脂质层厚度(LLT),并使用眼表疾病指数量表(OSDI)进行问卷调查。

结果:两组患者手术前后NITBUT、TMH、OSDI比较有差异(P<0.05); 试验组及对照组术后1wk, 1mo NITBUT均较术前有明显降低(P<0.05),其中对照组术后1wk,1mo NITBUT较试验组降低更为明显(P<0.05)。试验组TMH术后1wk较术前明显降低(P<0.05),术后1wk基本恢复到术前水平(P>0.05)。试验组及对照组术后1wk,1mo OSDI均较术前有明显升高(P<0.05),其中对照组术后1wk,1mo OSDI较试验组升高更为明显(P<0.05)。

结论:白内障超声乳化手术可破坏MGD患者的睑板腺功能及眼表状态,而术前行睑板腺理疗可以显著改善白内障术后MGD患者的眼表状态,并提高患者的满意度。  相似文献

目的:探讨睑板腺开口挑排等物理治疗睑板腺功能障碍(meibomian gland dysfunction,MGD)的疗效。方法:回顾性分析2012-01/12我院收治的MGD患者52例100眼的临床资料,根据临床表现及体征确诊为MGD,随机分为两组,A组(物理治疗组)26例50眼患者给予局部清洗、热敷、睑板腺开口挑排、妥布霉素地塞米松眼膏及人工泪液等综合治疗,B组(对照组)26例50眼患者仅用人工泪液和妥布霉素地塞米松眼膏药物治疗,比较两组治疗前后患者自觉症状、角膜荧光素染色(FL)、泪液分泌和泪膜破裂时间。结果:A组自觉症状好转24例47眼,好转率94%,B组自觉症状好转14例27眼,好转率54%,两组间差异有统计学意义(P<0.01);两组间泪液分泌治疗后无明显统计学差异(P>0.05);泪膜破裂时间(BUT)A组治疗后明显好转,治疗后2,4wk两组间比较有统计学意义(P<0.01);角膜荧光素染色(FL),治疗后2,4wk两组之间有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:MGD是一种可致眼表炎症及损伤的慢性疾病,睑板腺开口挑排等物理治疗睑板腺功能障碍疗效确切,患者满意度高。  相似文献

目的:观察应用睑板腺分析系统评估强脉冲光(IPL)联合睑板腺按摩治疗对睑板腺功能障碍(MGD) 相关干眼的有效性。方法:系列病例研究。选取2019 年7 ─8 月在西安市第四医院干眼门诊就诊的 MGD相关干眼患者37 例(74 眼),给予IPL联合睑板腺按摩治疗,每3 周治疗1 次,共3 次。通过重复 测量的方差分析评估患者治疗前、第1次治疗后、第2次治疗后和第3次治疗后眼表疾病指数(OSDI)、 非侵入泪膜破裂时间(NITBUT)、非侵入泪河高度(NITMH)、睑板腺分泌功能评分(MGYSS)、睑 板腺形变系数及显影值等指标的差异,采用Pearson线性相关分析探讨睑板腺形变系数和显影值与 眼表功能指标的相关性。结果:OSDI、NITBUT、MGYSS及睑板腺显影值在3 次治疗后均较治疗前 有明显改善,且差异均有统计学意义(P<0.001)。睑板腺形变系数在第1 次和第2 次治疗后,与治疗 前差异无统计学意义,而在第3 次治疗后,较治疗前改善,且差异有统计学意义(P=0.01);NITMH 在3 次治疗后较治疗前无明显改善,差异均无统计学意义;从指标变化趋势上看,OSDI、NITBUT、 MGYSS及睑板腺显影值于第1 次治疗后持续好转,于第3 次治疗后疗效最佳,而睑板腺形变系数于 治疗后变化平缓,在3 次治疗后才有所提升。睑板腺形变系数与OSDI呈正相关(r=0.379,P=0.01), 与NITBUT呈负相关(r=-0.427,P=0.01),与NITMH(r=-0.132,P=0.538)和MGYSS无相关性;显 影值与OSDI呈负相关(r=-0.904,P<0.001),与NITBUT(r=0.947,P<0.001)和MGYSS呈正相关 (r=0.467,P<0.001),与NITMH无相关性。整个研究过程中未见不可逆的眼睑皮肤损伤,未见眼前 节炎性反应、虹膜脱色素、眼表或眼底损伤、视力下降及高眼压等并发症。结论:IPL联合睑板腺按 摩对MGD相关干眼的治疗有效、安全。睑板腺分析系统在一定程度上可反映腺体分泌能力,可通 过显影值等具体量化数据作为治疗效果评估的补充手段。  相似文献

目的:分析睑板腺功能障碍患者睫毛蠕形螨感染的临床特征。

方法:回顾性研究。选取2016-11/2018-06就诊于本院的睑板腺功能障碍患者220例440眼,根据是否并发睫毛蠕形螨感染将其分为未感染组和感染组,每组110例220眼,检测对比两组患者各项眼部功能指标,评估睫毛蠕形螨感染的临床特点。

结果:感染组患者瘙痒感、异物感、眼痛、干涩感等临床症状发生率明显高于非感染组(P<0.05),眼红、分泌物增多、疲劳感、畏光等症状发生率无明显差异(P>0.05); 两组平均泪膜破裂时间、基础泪液分泌量均明显低于正常水平,且感染组低于非感染组(P<0.05); 非感染组角膜染色评分及睑板腺分泌功能评分均低于感染组(P<0.05)。

结论:睑板腺功能障碍患者发生睫毛蠕形螨感染后更容易出现瘙痒、干涩、眼痛等症状,增加角结膜上皮损害,重视蠕形螨感染检查对睑板腺功能障碍患者意义重大。  相似文献

目的:探讨中老年患者睑板腺功能障碍(MGD)的临床特点及诊治要点。方法:通过问卷调查、泪膜破裂时间、ShimmerⅠ试验、角膜荧光素染色及睑板腺分泌物的检查,将74例145眼睑板腺功能障碍患者分为轻度、中度、重度三组,根据疾病程度,分别行睑缘清洁、疏通、按摩、人工泪液、或抗炎、抗感染等联合治疗。结果:睑板腺功能障碍患者74例145眼治疗1mo后,眼表疾病指数评分下降,睑腺分泌物评分下降,泪膜破裂时间延长,眼表活体染色评分下降。各型MGD的总治愈率34.5%,总有效率98.6%。结论:眼科医师应掌握中老年睑板腺功能障碍的临床特点,重视症状、病史的询问及眼表及睑板腺功能的检查。避免睑板腺功能障碍的误诊、误治。  相似文献

目的:探讨应用深度学习技术解决睑板腺腺体自动分割问题的效果与价值。方法:采集并筛选出193幅红外睑板腺图像构建图像数据库,由3名临床医师对图像进行人工标记;引入UNet++网络与自动数据增广策略构建睑板腺腺体自动分割模型,采用精确率、敏感性、特异性、准确率和交并比分析该模型的可行性与有效性。结果:以人工标注结果为金标准,基于UNet++的睑板腺腺体自动分割模型取得94.31%的准确率,敏感性、特异性分别为82.15%和96.13%,腺体分割表现具有较好的稳定性,模型处理单张图像的平均用时仅为0.11s。结论:引入深度学习技术实现睑板腺腺体的自动分割,具有良好的准确性、稳定性和高效性,可服务于睑板腺功能障碍患者腺体形态参数的计算,辅助相关疾病的临床诊断和筛查,提高诊断效率。  相似文献

目的:探讨3%地夸磷索钠滴眼液联合强脉冲光治疗睑板腺功能障碍的疗效及睑板腺形态的变化。

方法:前瞻性研究。选取2021-01/2022-05在我院确诊的睑板腺功能障碍患者141例282眼,使用数字表法随机分为对照组(73例146眼,给予0.3%玻璃酸钠滴眼液联合强脉冲光治疗)及观察组(68例136眼,给予3%地夸磷索钠滴眼液联合强脉冲光治疗)。结束治疗后2wk对两组主观症状评分、体征评分、非侵入性泪膜破裂时间、泪河高度、泪膜脂质层厚度、睑板腺密度情况等进行比较及两组治疗前后的差异性。

结果:两组患者治疗前主观症状评分、体征评分、非侵入性泪膜破裂时间、泪河高度、泪膜脂质层厚度、睑板腺密度等比较均无差异(P>0.05)。治疗后2wk两组患者眼部症状评分、体征评分均持续降低,非侵入性泪膜破裂时间、泪膜脂质层厚度均持续升高,睑板腺密度均增加,观察组泪河高度升高而对照组变化不明显。观察组各项临床指标均优于对照组(P<0.05)。所有患者均未见明显并发症发生。

结论:地夸磷索钠联合强脉冲光在睑板腺功能障碍治疗中相互协同,疗效显著且能促进睑板腺修复,明显优于单纯强脉冲光治疗。  相似文献

目的:构建一个基于卷积神经网络(CNN)的人工智能(AI)系统,能够全自动地评价睑板腺功能障碍(MGD)患者的睑板腺形态变化。方法:选取2021-01/11在温州医科大学附属眼视光医院杭州院区就诊的145名受试者右眼纳入研究。随机选择其中60名受试者的睑板腺照相用于AI训练。收集睑板腺图像后首先标注出睑板区域和每一根睑板腺腺体。使用残差神经网络(ResNet)结合U-Net模型进行数据训练,获得成熟的AI系统;85名受试者包括阻塞性MGD患者53名和睑板腺正常的志愿者32名,使用AI系统自动分析其各项睑板腺形态参数。同时观察临床指标包括眼表疾病指数(OSDI)、泪河高度(TMH)、泪膜破裂时间(TBUT)、角膜荧光素染色(CFS)、睑缘评分、睑板腺评分和睑板腺分泌能力评分。分析睑板腺参数与临床指标的相关性。结果:通过多次版本迭代,最终获得了交并比达92.0%的AI系统。使用该AI系统,发现上眼睑的睑板腺密度与OSDI(rs=-0.320)、TBUT(rs=0.484)、睑缘评分(rs=-0.350)、睑板腺评分(r  相似文献

Purpose:

To investigate the correlations between conjunctival inflammatory status and meibomian gland (MG) morphology in vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) patients by using in vivo confocal microscopy (CM).

Materials and Methods:

Nineteen VKC patients (7 limbal, 7 tarsal, and 5 mixed forms) and 16 normal volunteers (controls) were enrolled. All subjects underwent CM scanning to obtain the images of upper palpebral conjunctiva and MGs. Inflammatory cell (IC) density in palpebral conjunctival epithelial and stromal layers, Langerhans cell (LC) density at lid margins and the stroma adjacent to the MG, and MG acinar unit density (MGAUD) were recorded. The longest and shortest diameters of MG acinar were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the parameter differences whereas the Spearman''s rank correlation analysis was applied to determine their correlations.

Results:

Among all groups, no significant statistical differences were found in epithelial and stromal IC densities, mean values of MG acinar unit densities, or longest and shortest diameters. Both LC parameters in the tarsal-mixed groups were significantly higher than those in the limbal and control groups. All LC densities of VKC patients showed a positive correlation with MGAUD and shortest diameter.

Conclusions:

In VKC patients, the conjunctival inflammatory status could be associated with the MG status. In vivo CM is a noninvasive, efficient tool in the assessment of MG status and ocular surface.  相似文献

目的:评价白内障术前进行眼睑热敷联合睑板腺按摩对白内障合并轻中度睑板腺功能障碍(MGD) 患者白内障术后临床效果的改善。方法:前瞻性临床研究。收集2019年9月至2020年6月于温州医科大学附属眼视光医院杭州院区就诊的50~85岁轻中度MGD合并白内障的患者,按随机数字表法分为实验组和对照组,实验组先接受3次眼睑热敷联合睑板腺按摩治疗再行白内障手术,对照组直接行白内障手术。分别记录MGD治疗前、治疗后以及白内障术后1周、1个月、3个月时的泪液分泌试验(SⅠT)、泪膜破裂时间(TBUT)、角结膜染色评分、睑板腺功能评分;眼表综合分析仪(keratograph 5M)检查并记录非侵入性泪河高度(NITMH)、非侵入性泪膜破裂时间(NITBUT)和睑板腺缺失范围(MGL);采用眼表疾病指数(OSDI)问卷得分进行评估。使用广义估算方程(GEE)、广义线性混合模型(GLMM)、独立样本t检验及Mann-Whitney U检验进行数据分析。结果:共纳入77例(77眼), 最终纳入分析68例(68眼),每组34例。实验组在MGD治疗后,睑缘形态、睑板腺排出能力、SⅠT、 TBUT及OSDI评分较MGD治疗前明显好转(P<0.05);角膜点染在白内障术后1周时较治疗前增加 (P=0.002),至术后1个月时恢复至治疗前水平。组间比较发现,实验组睑脂质量变化量在白内障术后各时间点均明显优于对照组(P<0.05);白内障术后1周时,实验组睑缘形态的变化量小于对照组, 术后1个月时,NITMH变化量小于对照组,而OSDI评分变化量大于对照组(P<0.05),实验组症状及体征更轻;对照组在白内障术后1周时,睑缘形态及SⅠT明显变差,至术后1个月时恢复至术前水平; 睑脂质量在术后1周时变差,NITMH在术后1个月时减少,二者至术后3个月时恢复至术前水平。结论: 白内障术前采用眼睑热敷联合睑板腺按摩治疗MGD,可改善术后睑板腺功能状态,缓解干眼症状。  相似文献

方法:回顾性病例研究。选取2020-03/2021-09在西安国际医学中心医院眼科门诊就诊的睑板腺功能障碍性干眼患者72例144眼,根据睑板腺缺失面积占比分为中度组(1/3<睑板腺缺失<2/3,37例74眼)和重度组(睑板腺缺失≥2/3,35例70眼),根据治疗方法不同分为A组(睑板腺熏蒸按摩治疗)和B组(睑板腺熏蒸按摩联合强脉冲光治疗)。分别于治疗前、治疗后1mo进行眼表疾病指数(OSDI)问卷评分,检测非侵入性泪河高度(NITMH)和非侵入性平均泪膜破裂时间(NIBUTav),并进行眼红分析。

结果:与治疗前比较,治疗后1mo A组和B组患者OSDI评分均显著降低,NIBUTav及眼红分析结果均显著改善(P<0.001),而NITMH均无显著变化(P>0.05); 中度组患者中A组和B组患者OSDI评分均显著降低,NIBUTav及眼红分析结果均显著改善(P<0.01),而NITMH均无显著变化(P>0.05); 重度组患者中,A组患者NIBUTav显著改善(P<0.001),其余各观察指标均无显著变化(P>0.05),而B组患者OSDI评分明显降低,NIBUTav和眼红分析结果显著改善(P<0.001),但NITMH无显著变化(P>0.05)。

结论:两种治疗方法治疗中度睑板腺功能障碍性干眼均有效,但重度睑板腺功能障碍性干眼需在睑板腺熏蒸按摩基础上联合强脉冲光治疗。  相似文献

PurposeWhile mouse models of dry eye disease (DED) have been developed, studies evaluating the role of the meibomian glands limited by the inability to temporally document changes. In this report we describe the development of a novel mouse transillumination meibography device and assess the ability of this device to detect age-related changes in the meibomian glands of young and old mice.MethodsThe mouse meibography device was comprised of a 3 mm wide right angle prism attached to broad spectrum light source by an optical fiber. Eyelids were then pulled over the prism using double tooth forceps and imaged using a stereomicroscope and low light level camera. Meibomian glands from four young and four old male, BALB/c mice were then imaged and analyzed using ImageJ.ResultsIn young mice, meibography documented the presence of 7–8 meibomian glands appearing as black and distinct eyelid structures with the length shorter in the lower eyelid compared to the upper eyelids. Eyelids of old mice showed apparent dropout of meibomian glands along with smaller and more irregularly shaped acini. The mean acini area of one meibomian gland was 0.088 ± 0.025 mm2 in young mice and 0.080 ± 0.020 mm2 in old mice (p = 0.564), but the Meibomian gland density was significantly lower in older mice (41.7 ± 6.4%, 27.3 ± 4.2%) (p = 0.021).ConclusionWe have developed an in vivo meibography device that may prove useful in sequentially documenting changes during development of meibomian gland dysfunction and following treatment.  相似文献
