《Genetics in medicine》2021,23(6):1004-1007
From its earliest days, the field of human genetics has had a complex, and at times troubling, connection with racist ideologies. Although the modern field of human genetics and genomics has come a long way from those earlier errors, systemic racism remains ingrained in its institutions and practices. Although a variety of efforts are needed to excise systemic racism, we focus in this commentary on the work that must be done in scientific publishing in genetics and genomics. We propose eight principles that are both scientifically grounded and antiracist that we hope will serve as a foundation for the development of policies by publishers and editorial boards that address the unique needs of the field of genetics and genomics. Publishers and journals must go beyond mere policies, however. Editors and reviewers will need training on these policies and principles, and will benefit from resources like rubrics that can be used for evaluating the adherence of submissions to these guidelines.

We describe a new tool for visualization of biomedical scientific trends. The method captures variations in scientific impact over time to allow for a comparison of relative significance and evolution of fields similar to a financial market scorecard. The tool is available at SciTrends (http://www.scitrends.net), depicting the evolution of almost 200 thousand biomedical fields in time. With millions of articles on thousands of topics published in biomedicine, we envision that only with such large-scale tools researchers can objectively understand the ever-changing interests in the biomedical sciences and make more informed decisions.

Proteomics and its impact upon biomedical science
Proteomics is the protein equivalent of genomics and is the study of gene expression at a functional level. The proteome of an organism is the protein complement of its genome. However, unlike the genome, the proteome is dynamic: it varies according to the cell type and the functional state of the cell. In addition, the proteome shows characteristic perturbations in response to disease and external stimuli. Proteomics combines state of the art analytical methods with bioinformatics. Here, we review the concept and technology of proteomics with specific reference to applications in medical microbiology, cellular pathology, clinical chemistry, haematology/immunology, pharmacology and toxicology.

Background

The evaluation of academic research performance is nowadays a priority issue. Bibliometric indicators such as the number of publications, total citation counts and h-index are an indispensable tool in this task but their inherent association with the size of the research output may result in rewarding high production when evaluating institutions of disparate sizes. The aim of this study is to propose an indicator that may facilitate the comparison of institutions of disparate sizes.

Biomedical research is an enterprise that is generally active today. The future of biomedical research will be determined by the directions given it by the individual research investigators, development of new equipment and facilities, availability of money to fund research, societal attitudes about the goals and uses of research, and the character of research investigators' training. The future of biomedical research seems to be substantial because it leads to strategies and techniques for preventing or curing disease, and, thereby, results of research can enable health care to be both improved and made less costly. The condition of research in pathology seems to be less healthy than does that of biomedical research in general. Faculty members of academic pathology departments do not seem to compete well for research support from federal sources, and this lack may signal a further decline in pathology research in the future. The reasons for the perceived erosion of research in pathology are complex, but they must be addressed and reversed. Since the practice of diagnostic pathology is an applied technology that depends on research for new scientific insights and techniques to sustain it, continued erosion of the research base of pathology will adversely affect the future utility and relevance of diagnostic pathology as a clinical medical specialty.
