PurposeNasal screening is performed to avoid the complications of postoperative surgical site infections (SSI), especially those due to antimicrobial-resistant species such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This study examined the relationship between bacterial isolates from the conjunctiva and the nasal cavity.MethodsAll patients were diagnosed with ocular surface infections, and the organisms in the conjunctiva and the nasal cavity were isolated. We investigated the relationship of the following antimicrobial-resistant bacteria between the conjunctiva and the nose: MRSA, methicillin-resistant CNS (MRCNS), levofloxacin-resistant (LVFX-R) Corynebacterium spp. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test, and the odds ratio was examined.ResultsThis study included 188 eyes of 188 subjects (87 males and 101 females; mean age 58.5 years, range 11–97 years). MRSA (4 eyes), MRCNS (29 eyes), and LVFX-R Corynebacterium spp. (41 eyes) were identified from the conjunctiva, and MRSA (6 eyes), MRCNS (38 eyes), and LVFX-R Corynebacterium spp. (41 eyes) were identified from the nasal cavity. There was a significant relationship detected between the conjunctiva and the nose for MRSA, MRCNS, and LVFX-R Corynebacterium spp. MRSA displayed high sensitivity (0.750, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 0.301 to 0.987) and specificity (0.984, 95% CI; 0.953 to 0.996) in nasal cavity cultures, and the odds ratio was 181.00 times (95% CI; 18.41 to 2320).ConclusionThis study showed a significant relationship between conjunctival and nasal cultures of MRSA, MRCNS, and LVFX-R Corynebacterium spp., suggesting that nasal cavity culture is a potentially useful screening method for detecting resistant bacteria, especially MRSA, in the conjunctiva.  相似文献

PurposeThe ocular surface microbiota are recognised as one of causative microorganisms in post-procedural endophthalmitis but in many cases the vitreous tap is culture negative. This study investigated bacterial contamination of intravitreal (IVT) needles using multiple approaches covering culturing, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).MethodsIVT needles were obtained immediately after injection from patients undergoing treatment for predominantly age-related macular degeneration. Eighteen needles were analysed by culturing on chocolate blood agar. In addition, 40 needles were analysed by extracting DNA and paired-end sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Sequences were quality filtered (USEARCH), taxonomically classified (SILVA) and contaminant filtered (DECONTAM). Nine needles were analysed by either FISH using the bacterial probe EUB338 or SEM.ResultsUsing culturing, three bacteria were identified from 5 of 18 needles (28%) - Kocuria kristinae, Staphylococcus hominis and Sphingomonas paucimobilis. The negative control needles showed no growth. Following rigorous data filtering, bacterial community analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the presence of predominantly Corynebacterium but also Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas, Staphylococcus and Bacillus on the needles. Cocci-shaped cells in a tetrad formation were observed using FISH, while SEM images showed cocci-shaped bacteria in pairs and irregular tetrads.ConclusionsThe study showed evidence for a large diversity of bacteria on IVT needles and visually confirmed their adherence. The diversity was similar to that found on the ocular surface and in conjunctival tissue. This suggests the risk of exogenous endophthalmitis remains even with sterilization of the conjunctival surface.  相似文献

Purpose:Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) mediated resistance is more prevalent worldwide, especially among Gram-negative bacterial isolates, conferring resistance to the expanded spectrum cephalosporins. As limited data were available on the prevalence of ESBLs in this area, the current study was undertaken to determine the prevalence, antibacterial resistance patterns, and molecular detection and characterization of ESBL encoding resistance genes among ocular Gram-negative bacterial isolates from ocular infections.Results:Of all Gram-negative bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (44%) was the most common strain, followed by Enterobacter agglomerans and Klebsiella pneumoniae each (10%). Among the 252, 42 (17%) were ESBL producers. The major source of ESBL producers were corneal scraping specimens, highest ESBL production was observed in P. aeruginosa 16 (38%) and Escherichia coli 7 (16.6%). Among ESBL-producing genes, the prevalence of blaTEM-gene was the highest (83%) followed by blaOXA-gene (35%), blaSHV-gene (18.5%), and blaCTX-M-1-gene (18.5%) alone or together.Conclusion:The higher rate of prevalence of ESBLs-encoding genes among ocular Gram-negative bacteria is of great concern, as it causes limitation to therapeutic options. This regional knowledge will help in guiding appropriate antibiotic use which is highly warranted.  相似文献

PurposeThe objective of the study was to evaluate the type of conjunctival microbial flora in intensive care unit patients and their antimicrobial sensitivity pattern.MethodsA total of 272 samples (conjunctival swabs) were taken from patients in various intensive care units and sent for culture and sensitivity. An ocular examination was done to look for lagophthalmos, conjunctival discharge, exposure keratitis, and corneal perforation.ResultsMajority (82.1%) of the samples showed at least one microbial isolate while 29 (10.7%) samples showed multiple microbial growth. The most common microbes were coagulase negative Staphylococcus spp. (41.5% of isolates), diphtheroids (11.0% of isolates), and Staphylococcus aureus (9.6% of isolates) which are the usual commensals of the ocular surface. Of the other microbes isolated, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (4.0%) was the most common. Eighty-four percent isolates of coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp., 81.8% isolates of diphtheroids and 100% isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were penicillin resistant. All isolates of Enterococcus fecalis were sensitive only to vancomycin. Two hundred and twenty eyes (80.9%) had varying degrees of lagophthalmos. Nineteen (7.0%) had severe corneal exposure changes leading to infectious corneal ulcer and perforation in all of them.ConclusionsThe isolates in patients of intensive care units were no different from the normal conjunctival flora though few pathogenic organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter sp. were also isolated. Most of the isolates were penicillin resistant. This knowledge will help take appropriate prophylactic measures to contain ocular infections in the intensive care units.  相似文献

PurposeThe human eye is composed of numerous microhabitats. The aim of this study was to understand the communality and differences in the microbiomes of various regions of the eye.MethodsFour ocular sites from different subject groups were assessed including the eyelid margin tissue from patients with lid abnormalities (n = 20), fornix and limbus conjunctival tissue from patients with pterygia (n = 23), ocular (conjunctival) surface swabs (n = 45) and facial skin swabs (n = 16). Microbial communities were analysed by extracting total DNA from samples and sequencing the 16S ribosomal(r)RNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Sequences were quality filtered, clustered into unique sequences (zOTUs) using the UNOISE pipeline in USEARCH and taxonomically classified using SILVA.ResultsA difference in bacterial richness and diversity was found between sites (P < 0.001) and for age (P < 0.035) but not for sex (P > 0.05). There was a difference in bacterial community structure and composition between sites (P < 0.001). Bacterial distribution could be broadly classified into three groups - zOTUs resident on the skin and lid margin but with low abundances at other sites (Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus), zOTUs found mainly on the ocular surface (Acinetobacter, Aeribacillus) and zOTUs mostly present in the conjunctiva and lid margin (Pseudomonas).ConclusionThe microhabitats of the human eye (ocular surface, conjunctiva, lid margin and skin) have a distinct bacterial biogeography with some bacteria shared between multiple regions while other bacteria occupy a more confined niche.  相似文献

BackgroundTo describe the benefits and optimum use of prophylactic antibiotics in users of therapeutic contact lenses (TCL).MethodsA microbiological study was carried out on samples from 33 patients who continuously wore TCL. The resistance to antibiotics of bacteria isolated in our health region was also reviewed. An assessment was also made on whether there were microorganisms of a higher pathogenic potential in TCL than conventional contact lenses, as reported in the literature.ResultsNo bacteria were isolated from 17 (52%) of the 33 lenses studied. From the 16 (48%) remaining lenses, coagulase negative Staphylococci were isolated from 10 (62%), Propionibacterium acnes from 4 (25%), and Corynebacterium from 2 (13%).ConclusionsThe high number of negative cultures and the presence of saprophytic bacteria indicate that prophylactic antibiotic treatment is not precise. The most frequent pathogenic bacteria found in contact lenses are strongly resistant to the current commercially available antibiotics.  相似文献

BackgroundTo describe the clinical presentation, burden and antimicrobial resistance of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) eye infections and to recommend a streamlined protocol for the management of ocular MRSA colonisation detected by pre-operative screening.MethodsA retrospective review of all ocular samples which resulted in the isolation of MRSA between 1st of January 2013 and 31st of December 2019 at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital.ResultsA total of 185 samples taken from the ocular surface were MRSA positive. The majority were MRSA colonisation of the ocular surface obtained as part of an MRSA screen (139/6955 patients screened; 2%). Forty-six represented MRSA infections (46/7904 eye samples; 0.58%), most occurring in older patients the majority of whom had known local or systemic risk factors for colonisation. The most common presentation was conjunctivitis (n = 24), followed by pre-septal cellulitis (n = 9). MRSA infections with the poorest clinical outcomes and the longest inpatient stay, were keratitis (n = 6) and post-operative endophthalmitis (n = 2). Our study demonstrated over 60% resistance to azithromycin, fusidic acid and ciprofloxacin, although resistance to chloramphenicol was uncommon.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that MRSA infections of the eye most commonly manifest as a mild infection, typically conjunctivitis, and are generally non-sight threatening. The majority of presentations occur in the context of known MRSA risk factors and in an older populous. Resistance to chloramphenicol is rare, thus it remains an excellent first line treatment. Its use to eradicate MRSA from the ocular surface is proposed to streamline the delivery of surgical eye care.Subject terms: Conjunctival diseases, Health services  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe the proportion of patients allergic to β-lactam antibiotics and the prevalence of preoperative conjunctival bacteria among those undergoing cataract surgery in our area.MethodRetrospective cross-sectional study of prevalence of β-lactam allergic patients consecutively scheduled for cataract surgery from 11 July 2005 to November 2012. For studying the prevalence of conjunctival bacteria and clinical characteristics in the patients’ preoperative examination, those under 18 years and those with cataract surgery combined with other eye surgeries were excluded. Data from the first preoperative examination of the remaining patients were selected. Clinical data were extracted from the database generated in the evaluation made for anesthetic purposes, and the microbiological data from the laboratory database. Both bases were linked through a patient history code. A comparison was made between the prevalence of conjunctival bacteria and clinical characteristics in allergic and non-allergic patients.ResultsFrom 12,409 adults selected for the bacteriological study, 862 (6.96%) were allergic to β-lactams, their mean age (74.45 years) was higher than that of the non-allergic (P = .005). The proportion of women (71.4%) in the allergic patient group was much higher than that of men. The prevalence of pathogenic bacteria (especially Bacillus spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), lung disease and heart failure, was higher in allergic patients.ConclusionsThe prevalence of allergy to β-lactams in this study is within the range described in other populations. The higher prevalence of pathogenic bacteria and the predominance of women in those allergic to β-lactams are useful data to guide their surgical prophylaxis.  相似文献

Bacterial pathogens are often involved in contact lens‐related adverse responses. This study aimed to find antimicrobial peptides and proteins that effectively eradicate or inhibit ocular bacteria. The antimicrobials were screened against Gram‐ negative and Gram‐positive bacteria originating from ocular sources. The viability of these ocular bacteria was measured after exposure to the peptides and proteins. Two conditions were used to grow bacteria, low nutrient phosphate‐buffered saline and high nutrient tryptone soya broth. Samples were taken at different times up to 48 h. In low nutrient conditions, protamine was found to be the most effective against all strains. Melittin was very effective against all strains except Serratia and one Pseudomonas isolate which were partially affected. In high nutrient condition, only melittin was effective in killing Staphylococcus aureus. Protamine and the combination of protamine and melittin had the greatest effect in eradicating the bacteria tested in low nutrient condition. Protamine alone and its combination with melittin may have potential therapeutic agents for ocular infections in an era of emerging antibiotic resistance.  相似文献

PurposeThere is growing evidence for a critical role of the microbiome in ocular health and disease. We performed a prospective, observational study to characterize the ocular surface microbiome (OSM) in four chronic ocular surface diseases (OSDs) and healthy controls.MethodsSterile swabs were used to collect samples from each eye of 39 patients (78 eyes). Sterile technique and multiple controls were used to assess contamination during DNA extraction, amplification and sequencing. Concurrent use of topical antibiotics, steroids, and bandage contact lenses (BCLs) was documented.ResultsDespite the low biomass of the ocular surface, 47/78 (60%) eyes sampled had positive sequencing reads. We observed that half of patients (8/17, 47%) had distinct microbiomes in each eye. Healthy controls had a Lactobacillus/Streptococcus mixture or significant Corynebacterium. Staphylococcus predominated in 4/7 (57%) patients with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) in at least one eye, compared to 0/10 healthy controls. Interestingly, 8/11 (73%) eyes with SJS were using BCLs, including 4/5 (80%) eyes dominated by Staphylococcus. Lax eyelid syndrome (LES) and Dry Eye Disease (DED) patients had similar OSMs, with Corynebacterium being the most prevalent bacteria. Alpha diversity was higher in controls and ocular graft-vs-host (oGVHD) patients compared to the other OSDs.ConclusionsOnly 50% of the 39 patients had similar microbiomes in each eye. A majority of healthy eyes had a Lactobacillus/Streptococcus mix or Corynebacterium microbiome. Staphylococcus predominated in SJS, Lactobacillus in oGVHD, and Corynebacterium in DED and LES. There may be an association between different OSDs and the microbiome.  相似文献

AIM: To find the optimal antibiotic treatment for ophthalmic infections in an Israeli hospital. METHODS: In a retrospective study from our laboratory, which serves as both a primary and secondary referral center, we analyzed the bacteriological profile and the antibiotic sensitivity of ophthalmic infections using the computerized laboratory reports of 331 consecutive ophthlamic bacteriological cultures from patients with various ophthalmic infections. RESULTS: Microbiological growth was obtained in 113 samples (34.1%). The most commonly isolated organism was coagulase-negative staphylococcus (19.5%), followed by coagulase-positive staphylococcus (16.8%), Enterobacteriaceae (14.2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13.3%), and streptococcal species (8.9%). Pseudomonas species were the most common isolates from the lacrimal pathways (20.0%). Streptococci were the most common isolates cultured from the conjunctiva (27.3%). Coagulase-positive staphylococcus was the most common isolate from corneal ulcers (33.3%), and coagulase-negative staphylococcus from the vitreous (30.8%). The overall antibiotic sensitivity of common ophthalmic pathogens was similar to that reported from other parts of the world. CONCLUSIONS: Although essentially similar to previous series, this report from the Middle East differs as follows. Firstly, Pseudomonas species were the most common isolates from the lacrimal pathways. Secondly, the overall rate of streptococcal isolates was lower than in previous reports. Thirdly, streptococcal species were rarely isolated from corneal samples. Although other studies from the region have described the causative organisms of ocular infections in specific ocular sites, this is the first study from the Middle East to summarize the full bacteriological profile of ocular infections in one medical center.  相似文献

Aim:

To determine profiles of non-chlamydia conjunctival bacteria and their antimicrobial susceptibility from adults who underwent trachomatous trichiasis surgery in rural areas of Ethiopia.

Materials and Methods:

A cross-sectional study was conducted in rural districts in West Gojjam administrative zone. Conjunctival swabs were collected during surgery and transported using Stuart transport broth (Oxoid, UK). Antibiotic susceptibility of conjunctival isolates was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disc-diffusion method.

Results:

Non-chlamydia pathogenic bacteria were recovered from conjunctiva of 438 (31%) participants before treatment. The isolated conjunctival bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococci, Streptococcus group (A, C, F and G), Enterococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella spp., Escherichia coli, Citrobacter spp., Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacter spp. Overall, resistance rates of 57.8% to azithromycin and 68.5% to chloramphenicol were found. However, 86-94.4% sensitivity was demonstrated to ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin. Moderate sensitivity rates (61.8-78.4%) were observed to ceftriaxone, tetracycline and cotrimoxazole.

Conclusion:

Fluoroquinolones that have activity against the majority of bacterial isolates were potent at in vitro. However, unacceptably high levels of resistance to azithromycin and chloramphenicol in rural community indicated a need for further study and antimicrobial resistance surveillance.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to develop a preclinical compound, ITRI-E-(S)4046, a dual synergistic inhibitor of myosin light chain kinase 4 (MYLK4) and Rho-related protein kinase (ROCK), for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP).MethodsITRI-E-(S)4046 is an amino-pyrazole derivative with physical and chemical properties suitable for ophthalmic formulation. In vitro kinase inhibition was evaluated using the Kinase-Glo Luminescent Kinase Assays. A comprehensive kinase selectivity analysis of ITRI-E-(S)4046 was performed using the KINOMEscan assay from DiscoverRx. The IOP reduction and tolerability of ITRI-E-(S)4046 were assessed in ocular normotensive rabbits, ocular normotensive non-human primates, and ocular hypertensive rabbits. In vivo studies were conducted to assess drug concentrations in ocular tissue. The adverse ocular effects of rabbit eyes were evaluated following the OECD405 guidelines.ResultsITRI-E-(S)4046 showed highly selective kinase inhibitory activity against ROCK1/2, MYLK4, and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 19 (MAP3K19), with high specificity against protein kinase A, G, and C families. In ocular normotensive rabbits and non-human primates, the mean IOP reductions of 0.1% ITRI-E-(S)4046 eye drops were 29.8% and 28.5%, respectively. In hypertonic saline-induced and magnetic beads-induced ocular hypertensive rabbits, the mean IOP reductions of ITRI-E-(S)4046 0.1% eye drops were 46.9% and 22.0%, respectively. ITRI-E-(S)4046 was well tolerated with only temporary and minor signs of hyperemia.ConclusionsITRI-E-(S)4046 is a novel type of highly specific ROCK1/2 and MYLK4 inhibitor that can reduce IOP in normotensive and hypertensive animal models. It has the potential to become an effective and well-tolerated treatment for glaucoma.  相似文献

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are ectoparasites that inhabit the skin of humans. They have been related to alterations in the ocular surface, such as, dysfunction of Meibomian glands, blepharitis, chalazion, etc. Ocular demodicosis is characterised by the pathognomonic presence of cylindrical dandruff at the base of the eyelashes, and various symptoms including, among others, itching, lacrimation, and hyperaemia. A bibliographic review was carried out on the role of Demodex spp. in ocular disease, including publications made by the scientific society between 2005 and 2018. A significant relationship was found between prevalence and incidence of Demodex spp. in eye diseases. D. folliculorum is usually found more frequently than D. brevis in ocular infestation, with the prevalence or incidence of infestation by both species increasing with the age of the patient. In patients with blepharitis or other infectious diseases of the ocular surface, unresolved with antibacterial treatment, the search for Demodex spp. should be considered.  相似文献

Demodex species (spp.) have previously been implicated in the pathogenesis of blepharitis. This study aims to correlate improvement in symptoms of external ocular disease with treatment of underlying Demodex spp. This is a prospective, observational case series of patients with chronic external ocular disease. Demodicosis was confirmed by microscopic examination of epilated eyelashes. The main outcome measure was response to the treatment (5 % tee tree oil) in regard to change in subjective symptoms utilising a symptom-based patient questionnaire assessment. Overall patients had a good response to the treatment in terms of improvement or resolution of symptoms, with 91 % of patients reporting at least some improvement in symptoms. The treatment of underlying Demodex spp. appears to result in improvement of symptoms in patients with long standing external ocular disease and underlying Demodex spp. infestation.  相似文献

Purpose:To observe the effect of demodex infection on the ocular surface changes of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and analyze the correlation between the number of demodex and the changes of the ocular surface.Methods:Hundred patients with MGD aged 18–70 years who visited the dry eye center of Shanghai Aier Eye Hospital were recruited. All patients were examined with in vivo confocal microscopy to quantify the demodex and divided them into two groups (demodex negative group and demodex positive group) according to the number of demodex mites. The subjects underwent questionnaires of ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and a series of examinations. Parameters including the OSDI score, fluorescein tear film break-up time (FBUT), meibum quality, meibum gland expressibility, meibomian gland dropout (MG dropout), and ocular redness were recorded and compared between the two groups. The correlation between the number of demodex and the ocular surface changes was further analyzed.Results:Among 100 patients, 51 were positive for demodex. The demodex-positive group showed significantly increased scores of OSDI (24.41 ± 3.43 vs 20.98 ± 2.31, P = 0.00), ocular redness score (1.38 ± 0.46 vs 1.00 ± 0.30, P = 0.00), and MG dropout (3.00 ± 1.13 vs 2.18 ± 0.64, P = 0.00) and decreased FBUT (6.40 ± 1.63 vs 6.54 ± 1.83, P = 0.00), compared to the demodex-negative group. A significant correlation was noted between the number of demodex and OSDI, ocular redness, and FBUT.Conclusion:Ocular demodex infestation might play a role in the ocular surface discomfort, inflammation, and meibomian gland dropout in MGD patients. It is necessary to pay attention to the examination and treatment of demodex mite in patients with MGD.  相似文献

PurposeTo study the ocular manifestations, its severity and sequelae in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN).MethodsProspective study of 44 consecutive patients (30 SJS and 14 TEN) presenting in the acute phase of the disease. Patients were evaluated by dermatologist as well as physician for systemic status, skin lesions and mucosal involvement. Detailed history taking, visual acuity, ophthalmic evaluation (lid margin, corneal, conjunctival changes, tear film and ocular surface). Ocular severity score (OSS) was assessed at baseline (acute) and at 6 months (chronic / OSS6), graded as mild, moderate and severe.ResultsMean age was 28.15 ± 15.78 years. Sixty-five eyes of 33 patients were included for final analysis. Thirty-eight patients (86.4%) had ocular manifestations. Drugs were the most common causative factor (95.4%). At base line mild, moderate, and severe OSS was seen in 43.1%, 44.6%, and 12.3% eyes. At 6 months mild, moderate, and severe OSS was seen in 44.6%, 7.7%, and 6.2% of eyes. There was a significant correlation between age of the patient and OSS at 6 months (p = 0.02). Younger age had higher chronic OSS. Patients with TEN had higher acute (p = 0.001) and chronic (p = 0.001) OSS than SJS. Three mucosal surface involvement associated with higher acute and chronic OSS (p = 0.001). No long-term ocular complications observed in 27 / 65 (41.5%) eyes. Acute OSS correlated significantly with chronic OSS, at 1 and 6 months (p = 0.001).ConclusionsGreater severity of the disease, more number of mucosal surfaces involved and shorter symptom lag correlated with more severe acute and chronic ocular manifestations. The severity of lid margin involvement and corneal involvement in acute stage were good predictors of severity of chronic ocular findings. Initial severity of ocular involvement correlated with severity of ocular sequelae.  相似文献

PurposeTo evaluate the symptoms and signs of ocular surface disease (OSD) and tear-film matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) overexpression using point-of-care testing (InflammaDry test) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).MethodsThis prospective, case-control study included 67 patients diagnosed with POAG and 47 healthy control subjects. The OSD assessment included Schirmer-I test, the Oxford corneal stain scale, tear breakup time (TBUT), and the five-item dry eye questionnaire (DEQ-5). Measurement of extracellular MMP-9 level was performed using the InflammaDry test. The OSD parameters and MMP-9 expression levels were compared between the POAG group and the control group. Additional subgroup analysis in POAG group was performed according to number of topical glaucoma medications (Bottle 1, 2, or 3 medications).ResultsThere were significant differences between the control and POAG groups for all OSD parameters. MMP-9 overexpression was observed in 71.6% of POAG group, whereas only 31.9% of control group showed MMP-9 overexpression. The subgroup analysis revealed that DEQ-5, Oxford stain score, Schirmer-I, and MMP-9 overexpression demonstrated no significant difference among the three groups. Abnormal TBUT (≤5 s) was observed in 37.5%, 59.1%, and 76.2% for each subgroup according to number of bottles (1, 2, and 3), and strong MMP-9 overexpression were also detected in 25.0%, 40.9%, and 61.9%, respectively (P = 0.032, P = 0.043).ConclusionsThe use of preservative-containing medications may affect the ocular surface in patients with POAG. Graded measurement of tear-film MMP-9 could provide more information on OSD and might be a more useful marker for inflammation than then conventional results obtained by using an MMP-9 kit.Subject terms: Corneal diseases, Glaucoma, Corneal diseases, Glaucoma  相似文献
