The purpose of this study was to compare in vitro long-term (30 month) fluoride release and rerelease rates (after fluoride exposure) from 3 orthodontic bonding materials containing fluoride and 1 without fluoride. Ten samples of each material (Python, TP Orthodontics, LaPorte, Ind; Assure, Reliance Orthodontic Products, Itasca, Ill; Fuji Ortho LC, GC America, Alsip, Ill; and Transbond XT, 3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) were fabricated and stored in deionized distilled water at 37 degrees C. Five samples had fluoride-release rates measured at days 546, 637, 730, 821, and 913 after initial fabrication, and 5 samples were exposed to fluoride (Nupro 2% NaF gel, Dentsply Canada, Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada) for 4 minutes at day 535 and had measurements taken on days 546, 548, 552, 575, 637, 730, 821, and 913. To prevent cumulative measurements, the storage solutions were changed 24 hours before measurement. Statistically significant differences were found in fluoride-release rates (P <.0001), with Fuji Ortho LC releasing the most fluoride, followed by Python and Assure at all time points in the nonfluoride exposed group. In the fluoride-exposed group, there were significant differences in fluoride release (P <.0001), with Fuji Ortho LC releasing the most fluoride. A "burst-effect" pattern of fluoride release was seen after fluoride exposure for all materials. It was concluded that Fuji Ortho LC, Assure, and Python might have sufficient long-term fluoride-release rates to reduce white spot formation, and all are recommended as suitable fluoride-releasing orthodontic bonding materials.

Objectives

This in vitro study assessed the effect of milk containing different fluoride concentrations on tooth erosion.

Methods

Bovine enamel and root dentine specimens were treated with: (1) bovine whole milk with 0 ppm F; (2) 2.5 ppm F; (3) 5 ppm F; (4) 10 ppm F (all after erosion); (5) whole milk with 0 ppm F (before erosion); (6) NaF (0.05% F, positive control, after erosion) or (7) 0.9% NaCl (negative control, after erosion). The specimens were submitted to pH cycles (4× 90 s in soft drink) and treatments for 5 days. The specimens were immersed in the treatment solutions for 1 min (only at the first cycle each day) with further exposition to 1:1 milk:saliva slurry for 10 min. The tooth loss was measured using a contact profilometer and statistically analysed (p < 0.05).

Results

Rinsing with milk before erosive challenge significantly reduced tooth loss compared to negative control (67% and 24% reduction in dentine and enamel loss, respectively) and to milk after erosive challenge, only for dentine. The addition of fluoride to milk also reduced tooth loss compared to negative control, but with no significant differences among fluoride concentrations for enamel and dentine (μm), respectively: 0 ppm (3.63 ± 0.04 and 2.51 ± 0.53), 2.5 ppm F (2.86 ± 0.42 and 1.96 ± 0.47), 5 ppm F (2.81 ± 0.27 and 1.77 ± 0.44), 10 ppm F (2.03 ± 0.49 and 1.68 ± 0.59). There was a negative and significant correlation between [F] and the tooth loss.

Conclusions

Daily rinse with milk containing F is able to reduce both enamel and dentine erosion in vitro.

Clinical significance

Since the prevalence of dental erosion is steadily increasing, rinse with milk or its derivate might be an important strategy to reduce the progression of tooth erosion.

Background: In the mid of 1980s, the cariostatic effect of fluoride ions on enamel caries had been demonstrated in many studies. The use of fluoride releasing dental restorative materials has seen increasing from many years for the specific purpose of leaching of fluoride into the surrounding tissues to inhibit secondary dental caries as well as prevention of caries in the newly erupted tooth. In the dental caries, acidic environment causes the demineralization of tooth structure and also affect the restorative margins of dental restoration. Aim: various restorative materials show different behavior in different pH conditions of oral cavity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the fluoride release of the various restorative materials at different pH. Design: In this in vitro study, 30 samples of each dental restorative material were prepared and grouped into five with six samples in each group as per the pH of the solution 4.3, 4.6, 5.0, 5.5, and 6.2. All the samples were subjected to alternate cycling of the demineralizing solution (6 h) and remineralizing solution (18 h) for 15 days. Results: the fluoride release was measured by using fluoride ion specific electrode and digital ion analyzer. The result showed that the fluoride release rate was significantly higher in first day and reduced after third day to nearly constant level. At pH 4.3, the fluoride release was highest and lowest at pH 6.2. Conclusion: the Amalgomer CR showed the highest fluoride release among all the experimental dental restorative materials.

Fluoride release from a glass-ionomer cement was measured in vivo during an 8-day period. Maxillary acrylic resin appliances, each carrying four glass-ionomer cement specimens, were worn by four subjects at night. Unstimulated whole saliva samples were collected before the subjects retired to bed (pretreatment samples) and in the morning (posttreatment samples). The average fluoride concentration and saliva flow of pretreatment samples were 31 +/- 4 ng/mL and 0.5 +/- 0.1 mL/min, respectively. In all subjects there was a statistically significant posttreatment increase (.005 less than P less than .025) in salivary fluoride concentration. The release of fluoride was nearly constant during the test period.
