The realisation of sexual rights remains a daunting challenge in most of sub-Saharan Africa despite the articulation of these rights in several international documents and national laws. In this paper, we highlight a possible but neglected reason why this is so. Current sexual rights declarations derive from the notion that the body, as a physical entity, belongs to the individual. However, our work in two southeastern Nigerian cultures, the Ngwa-Igbo and the Ubang, shows that there is at least one alternative view of the body, which constructs it as the property of the wider community, rather than that of the individual. In the two cultures in question, rights are embodied in the community, which also lays powerful claims on all its members, including the claim of body ownership. Individuals are thus more likely to seek and realise their rights within the communal space, rather than by standing alone. The assumption that individuals always hold the ultimate right to their bodies is problematic and may constrain the effectiveness of rights-based programmes and interventions in general, and of work around sexual rights in particular.  相似文献

Purpose

The synchronized development of a viable embryo and a receptive endometrium is critical for successful implantation to take place. The aim of this paper is to review current thinking about the importance of embryo-endometrial synchrony in in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Methods

Detailed review of the literature on embryo-endometrial synchrony.

Results

By convention, the time when the blastocyst first attaches and starts to invade into the endometrium has been defined as the ‘window of implantation’. The term window of implantation can be misleading when it is used to imply that there is a single critical window in time that determines whether implantation will be successful or not. Embryo maturation and endometrial development are two independent continuous processes. Implantation occurs when the two tissues fuse and pregnancy is established. A key concept in understanding this event is developmental ‘synchrony’, defined as when the early embryo and the uterus are both developing at the same rate such that they will be ready to commence and successfully continue implantation at the same time. Many different events, including controlled ovarian hyperstimulation as routinely used in IVF, can potentially disrupt embryo-endometrial synchrony. There is some evidence in humans that implantation rates are significantly reduced when embryo-endometrial development asynchrony is greater than 3 days (±1.5 days).

Conclusions

Embryo-endometrial synchrony is critical for successful implantation. There is an unmet need for improved precision in the evaluation of endometrial development to permit better synchronization of the embryo and the endometrium prior to implantation.

Over the past 20 years, advocates have gained formal recognition for some rights in sexuality and reproduction and established the application of human rights standards to sexual and reproductive health issues more generally. However, careful reflection on the state of norm development across sexuality and reproduction as a field reveals fractures and stagnation in the development of standards, and a lack of synergy among advocates and between frameworks for similar rights. This paper seeks to stimulate a more careful accounting for these realities. It examines the formal processes and rules guiding standard-setting, in light of the different intellectual and ideological genealogies of sexual and reproductive rights. We use (homo)sexual orientation and abortion as case studies of current high-profile human rights standard-setting, with specific attention to the contemporary state of human rights law-making in the United Nations today. By placing these two issues in conjunction, we seek to make visible relationships between the vicious political debates in the UN on abortion and sexual orientation, and the multiple and sometimes divergent statements of independent experts and expert bodies in the UN human rights system on these and other sexual and reproductive rights issues. We offer no answers but seek to highlight the need for more investigation and self-reflection by advocates and scholars on how these forces operate and how to work with them.  相似文献

World Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (WJOG) is a new member of the World Series journals and is launched in June 10, 2012. WJOG is an open access peer-reviewed bimonthly journal that will cover obstetrics and gynecology including reproductive medicine. The intention of WJOG is to publish papers that describe and influence the situation all around the world. The journal will publish both basic research and well as clinical findings. The focus shall be on translational work. Please send your important findings and comments to WJOG.  相似文献

Study goals were to assess if community agency interactions, the characteristics of services provided by staff, and the combinations of services received can predict women's perceptions of victim service helpfulness around domestic violence and sexual assault. Data were collected from agency representatives in 26 communities, and both women who used services and others living in the community (n = 1,509 women). Women found nonprofit victim services more helpful based on staff behavior in those agencies and the extent to which women felt control when working with staff; helpfulness of services was enhanced when agencies interacted with the legal system and other community agencies.  相似文献

The term 'risk' may be seen under multiple aspects. First of all, there is the risk of giving birth to a disabled child. Secondly, prenatal diagnosis itself constitutes a risk. Last but not least, there is a risk for society when presuming that everything is feasible. However 'risk' does not only mean danger, it also implies the notion of venture and responsibility. Responsibility towards society consists in opposing wrong developments. Responsibility towards the disabled child is often a pretext for not being able to bear misery. Life has to be lived; each other concept is contrary to nature. The only justification for not running the risk of having a disabled child lies in the responsibility towards one's own family. But often it is only in view of the task that we are assigned that we come to know our fortitude.  相似文献
