Increased satiety and decreased food intake are reported following the consumption of low glycaemic index (GI) foods, which gradually increase blood glucose. This observation, however, is not uniformly supported and few studies have examined the impact of different GI foods on satiety and intake in the elderly. After an overnight fast, 10 men and 10 women (aged 60-82 years) consumed similar amounts of available carbohydrate as high (glucose drink or potatoes) or low (barley) GI foods or a non-energy placebo drink on four mornings. Blood glucose and subjective appetite were measured throughout a 120 min post-ingestion period, followed by consumption of an ad libitum lunch. Differences in plasma glucose after test food ingestion (glucose > potatoes > barley > placebo; P < 0.03) did not predict subjective appetite or lunch intake. Potatoes increased subjective satiety the most, followed by barley, then glucose, which trended towards greater satiety than placebo. Potatoes led to less hunger than placebo (P = 0.0023) and less prospective consumption than the other three foods (P < 0.0083), and potatoes and barley led to greater fullness than glucose and placebo (P < 0.0001). Lunch intake was decreased, compared with placebo (502 +/- 47 kcal, P < 0.031), by potatoes (405 +/- 40 kcal) and barley (441 +/- 41 kcal); however, only potatoes (41.9 +/- 12.3%) led to greater compensation at lunch for test food ingestion compared with glucose (11.9 +/- 9.5%, P = 0.016). These results suggest that elderly subjects are sensitive to the effects of different foods on subjective appetite and food intake, and that the GI of the foods tested did not predict their effects on satiety and food intake. 相似文献

The aim of this research was to describe the effect of equal weights of insoluble fibre (wheat bran) and glycaemic carbohydrate (glucose) on appetite and food intake over 1 and 2h in healthy men. In a crossover design, high-fibre (F; 41 g insoluble fibre) cereal, low-fibre (W; 1g fibre) cereal, F plus glucose (FG; 41 g glucose), and W plus glucose (WG; 41 g glucose) were administered to young men after an overnight fast. Treatments had similar fat, protein, volume and weight. In the first experiment, subjective appetite was measured at 15 min intervals before an ad libitum meal at 60 min. In the second experiment, subjective appetite was measured at 15 min intervals for the first 60 and 30 min intervals for the second 60 min before an ad libitum meal at 120 min. In experiment 1, ad libitum food intake was lower after the F, WG and FG cereals compared to W (3.1, 2.98, 2.96 and 3.59 MJ, respectively). Total energy intake (cereal+ad libitum) was lower after F compared to W and WG (4.1, 4.6, and 4.7 MJ, respectively). In experiment 2, the WG cereal significantly reduced ad libitum food intake compared to W (3.90 and 4.57 MJ, respectively). These results suggest that a serving of 41 g insoluble fibre reduces food intake independent of its weight and volume and similar to an equal weight of glucose within 60 min, but this effect is not maintained after 120 min. 相似文献

Pulses are low-glycaemic foods rich in protein (20-25?%), resistant starch and fibre that suppress appetite and glycaemia. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the component(s) of yellow peas responsible for these benefits and assess their efficacy as value-added food ingredients. We investigated the effects of 10 or 20?g of isolated yellow pea protein (P10 and P20) or fibre (F10 and F20) on food intake (FI) at an ad libitum pizza meal served at 30?min (Expt 1, n 19) or 120?min (Expt 2, n 20) and blood glucose (BG) and appetite in young, healthy males (20-30 years). In Expt 1, P20 led to lower FI than control (4937 (sem 502) v. 5632 (sem 464)?kJ (1180 (sem 120) v. 1346 (sem 111)?kcal)) and all other treatments (P?0·01) and lower cumulative FI (pizza meal kcal+treatment kcal; CFI) compared to F10 (5460 (sem 498) v. 6084 (sem 452)?kJ (1305 (sem 119) v. 1454 (sem 108)?kcal); P?=?0·033). Both protein treatments suppressed mean pre-meal (0-30?min) BG compared to control (P?0·05), whereas only P20 suppressed mean post-meal (50-120?min) BG (P?0·01). There was no effect of treatment on pre-meal or post-meal appetite. In Expt 2, there was no effect of treatment on FI, CFI, or pre- or post-meal BG or appetite. In conclusion, protein is the component responsible for the short-term effects of yellow peas in the regulation of glycaemia and FI, but its second-meal effects disappear by 2?h post-consumption. 相似文献

We conducted two single-blinded randomized crossover acute studies with 24 and 20 subjects, respectively, to compare (I) Control vs. Flax drink; and (II) Flax drink vs. Flax tablets. The subjects were exposed to one of the treatments after an overnight fast, and rated appetite sensation for 120 min using visual analog scales (VAS). Hereafter they consumed an ad libitum early lunch to assess energy intake. The treatments were iso-caloric and iso-volumeric: Control: 300 mL drink; Flax drink: Control drink with addition flax fiber extract (2.5 g of soluble fibers); and Flax tablet: Control drink with flax fiber tablets (2.5 g of soluble fibers). Flax drink increased sensation of satiety and fullness compared to Control and a significant decrease in subsequent energy intake was observed after the Flax drink compared to Control (2937 vs. 3214 kJ). Appetite ratings were similar for Flax tablets and Flax drink as they did not differ by more than 1-4%. Subsequent energy intake was similar after the two treatments (3370 vs. 3379 kJ). A small dose of flaxseed fiber significantly suppresses appetite and energy intake. Furthermore, flaxseed fibers administered as drinks or tablets produce similar responses. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This study explored the influence of physiologic and subjective arousal on ambient factors of the food environment, such as the eating location, the presence of other people, sound, and time of day and on food intake. It was hypothesized that the influence of environmental stimuli on food intake would be mediated by arousal. METHODS: College students were asked to wear heart rate monitors and to record their food intake in a 7-d diet diary. Subjective arousal (elation and excitement) and aspects of the eating environment were recorded for each meal occasion. RESULTS: Results showed that subjective arousal seems to be related to food intake (P < 0.01) and appears to be affected by environmental stimuli such as the eating location (P < 0.01) and the number of people present (P < 0.01), but only small effects of some environmental stimuli on heart rate were found with higher average heart rates in restaurants (P < 0.05). No effects of heart rate on food intake were detected. Regression analyses failed to show arousal as a significant mediator between environmental stimuli and food intake. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that, for normal individuals in their everyday environment, ambient influences on food intake are not mediated by changes in arousal. However, the environment and the emotional state of the individual appear to play a role in the individual's eating behavior. 相似文献

In the present study we compared the postprandial glycemic and satiety responses of different dietary polysaccharides when added in milk (2% M.F.). The objective of this study was to evaluate different polysaccharides against postprandial glucose, appetite responses and food intake at subsequent meal. In a repeated measures design, 30 females (18–30 years) consumed 250?ml milk 2% M.F. (control), or milk with carrageenan (2.5?g), guar gum (2.5?g) and alginate (2.5?g), followed by an ad libitum pizza meal after 120?min. Alginate and guar gum addition resulted in lower caloric intake at subsequent pizza meal. The post-treatment (0–120?min) glucose and average appetite were suppressed by alginate and guar gum (p?0.0001), with more pronounced effect of guar gum. However, alginate resulted in lower blood glucose (p?0.0001) compared with control and carrageenan during post-treatment. Alginate and guar gum added beverages would be beneficial in short-term regulation of postprandial glycemia and satiety. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine how rated appetite relates to the amount eaten in a meal in healthy older people. On two study days, 32 healthy older men (n = 16) and women (n = 16) aged 65-85 years, recruited by advertisement, consumed a standardised breakfast and 4 h later were offered lunch from which they could eat freely. Foods eaten at lunch were weighed and energy intake calculated from nutrient composition data. Appetite was assessed at baseline and at 30-min intervals between meals by line ratings of hunger, fullness, nausea and how much could be eaten. The optimum time for correlations both among appetite ratings and between appetite and lunch intake was just before the lunch. Mean coefficients of repeatability (21-38 mm) and correlation coefficients (0.67-0.71) at that point in time were similar to those reported previously in young adults. Thus, in older and well as young adults, the size of a meal is most closely related to rated appetite just before the meal. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: A glucose drink has been shown to improve memory in persons with poor glucose regulation and poor cognition. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine 1) whether an association between cognition and glucose regulation is apparent in healthy seniors and 2) the effects of dietary carbohydrates on cognition. DESIGN: After an overnight fast, 10 men and 10 women (aged 60-82 y) consumed 50 g carbohydrate as glucose, potatoes, or barley or a placebo on 4 separate mornings. Cognitive tests were administered 15, 60, and 105 min after ingestion of the carbohydrate. Plasma glucose and serum insulin were measured. RESULTS: In a multiple regression analysis, poor baseline (placebo) verbal declarative memory (immediate and 20-min delayed paragraph recall and word list recall) and visuomotor task performance were predicted by poor beta cell function, high incremental area under the glucose curve, low insulin resistance, and low body mass index. The difference in plasma glucose after food consumption [glucose > potatoes > barley > placebo (P: < 0.03)] did not predict performance. Although overall performance did not differ with consumption of the different test foods, baseline score and beta cell function correlated with improvements in immediate and delayed paragraph recall for all 3 carbohydrates (compared with placebo); the poorer the baseline memory or beta cell function, the greater the improvement (correlation between beta cell function and improvement in delayed paragraph recall: r > -0.50, P: < 0.03). Poor beta cell function correlated with improvement for all carbohydrates in visuomotor task performance but not on an attention task. CONCLUSIONS: Glucose regulation was associated with cognitive performance in elderly subjects with normal glucose tolerance. Dietary carbohydrates (potatoes and barley) enhanced cognition in subjects with poor memories or beta cell function independently of plasma glucose. 相似文献

Contribution of various food groups to dietary vitamin B-6 intake in free-living, low-income elderly persons 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Elderly persons are reported to have low dietary intakes of vitamin B-6. Knowing which foods are the primary contributors of dietary vitamin B-6 may be useful to health professionals working to improve the nutritional status of the elderly. Therefore, we examined the contribution of five food groups--flesh foods (including all meat/fish/poultry), grains/cereals, legumes/nuts, fruits/vegetables, and dairy products/eggs--to dietary vitamin B-6 intake in 198 free-living elderly persons aged 60 years or older. Subjects were primarily Caucasian, low-income non-smokers; their mean age was 72 years. Mean dietary vitamin B-6 intake, determined from 3-day diet records, was 1.6 +/- 0.6 mg/day. The fruit/vegetable group was the largest dietary contributor of vitamin B-6 (0.69 mg/day). Flesh foods and cereals/grains contributed equally to the vitamin B-6 intake (0.35 and 0.34 mg/day, respectively). The lowest contributors were dairy products/eggs and legumes/nuts. Approximately 96% of the vitamin B-6 intake could be accounted for by the five food groups. Twenty percent of the population (no. = 39) consumed less than 66% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin B-6; their vitamin B-6 intake from fruits/vegetables and grains/cereals was 0.36 and 0.10 mg/day, respectively. Individuals with vitamin B-6 intakes greater than or equal to 100% of the RDA (no. = 69) consumed greater amounts of fruits/vegetables (primarily bananas) and grains/cereals (primarily breakfast cereal) than did persons who consumed less than 66% of the RDA for vitamin B-6; their vitamin B-6 intake from fruits/vegetables and grains/cereals was 0.98 and 0.55 mg/day, respectively. BACKGROUND: Insoluble fiber consumption is associated with reduced risk of obesity and diabetes, but its mechanisms of action are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to describe the effect of insoluble fiber on appetite, short-term food intake, and blood glucose (BG) before and after a meal 75 min later in healthy men. DESIGN: In a crossover design, high-fiber (HF; 33 g insoluble fiber) cereal, low-fiber (LF) cereal, white bread (WB), and water control were administered to young men after an overnight fast. Caloric treatments had similar energy, macronutrient content, volume, and weight. In the first experiment, subjective appetite and BG were measured at 15-min intervals before and after an ad libitum meal at 75 min. In the second experiment, a preset pizza meal (850 kcal) was consumed at 75 min. Appetite and blood glucose were measured for 150 min at fasting and at 15-min intervals before and after the fixed meal. RESULTS: In experiment 1, ad libitum food intake was lower after the HF cereal and WB than after the LF cereal and water (937 +/- 86, 970 +/- 65, 1109 +/- 90, 1224 +/- 89 kcal, respectively; P < 0.001). Appetite was lower (P < 0.05) after the HF cereal than after the WB but not different from the LF cereal. The BG area under the curve (AUC) did not differ among the HF cereal, WB, and LF cereal from 0 to 75 min, but the postmeal BG increased after the WB and LF cereal but not after the HF cereal. In experiment 2, the HF cereal, but not the LF cereal or WB, increased fullness before and prevented an increase in the BG AUC after the preset meal (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: A serving of 33 g insoluble fiber reduced appetite, lowered food intake, and reduced glycemic response to a meal consumed 75 min later. 相似文献

Two experiments were conducted, each with 20 healthy 9-10-year-old children. After an overnight fast, subjects were given a standardized breakfast at 0830 hrs, the treatments at 1030 hrs, and a lunch containing an excess of foods at 1200 hrs. Visual analog scales of hunger, fullness, and desire to eat were administered 5 min before and 20 and 85 min after treatment. Lunch-time food intake was measured. In experiment 1, either aspartame (34 mg/kg), or the equivalent sweetness of sodium cyclamate, was given in an ice slurry (300 ml) of unsweetened strawberry Kool-Aid with carbohydrate (1.75 g/kg polycose). In experiment 2, drinks (300 ml) contained either sucrose (1.75 g/kg) or aspartame (9.7 mg/kg). In both experiments, significant meal- and time-dependent effects were observed for subjective feelings of hunger, fullness and desire to eat. Treatments, however, did not affect either subjective feelings of appetite or lunch-time food intake. Thus, aspartame consumed without or with carbohydrate, did not affect either hunger or food intake of children when compared with the sweeteners sodium cyclamate and sucrose, respectively. 相似文献

Obesity is taking on pandemic proportions. The laws of thermodynamics, however, remain unchanged, as energy will be stored if less energy is expended than consumed; the storage is usually in the form of adipose tissue. Several neural, humeral and psychological factors control the complex process known as appetite. Recently, a close evolutionary relationship between the gut and brain has become apparent. The gut hormones regulate important gastrointestinal functions such as motility, secretion, absorption, provide feedback to the central nervous system on availability of nutrients and may play a part in regulating food intake. Peptide YY (PYY) is a thirty-six amino acid peptide related to neuropeptide Y (NPY) and is co-secreted with glucagon-like peptide 1. Produced by the intestinal L-cells, the highest tissue concentrations of PYY are found in distal segments of the gastrointestinal tract, although it is present throughout the gut. Following food intake PYY is released into the circulation. PYY concentrations are proportional to meal energy content and peak plasma levels appear postprandially after 1 h. PYY3-36 is a major form of PYY in both the gut mucosal endocrine cells and the circulation. Peripheral administration of PYY3-36 inhibits food intake for several hours in both rodents and man. The binding of PYY3-36 to the Y2 receptor leads to an inhibition of the NPY neurones and a possible reciprocal stimulation of the pro-opiomelanocortin neurones. Thus, PYY3-36 appears to control food intake by providing a powerful feedback on the hypothalamic circuits. The effect on food intake has been demonstrated at physiological concentrations and, therefore, PYY3-36 may be important in the everyday regulation of food intake. 相似文献

Short-term effects of whole-grain wheat on appetite and food intake in healthy adults: a pilot study

While it has been proposed, based on epidemiological studies, that whole grains may be beneficial in weight regulation, possibly due to effects on satiety, there is limited direct interventional evidence confirming this. The present cross-over study aimed to investigate the short-term effects on appetite and food intake of 48 g of whole-grain wheat (daily for 3 weeks) compared with refined grain (control). A total of fourteen healthy normal-weight adults consumed, within their habitual diets, either two whole-grain bread rolls (providing 48 g of whole grains over two rolls) or two control rolls daily for 3 weeks. Changes in food intake were assessed using 7 d diet diaries. Changes in subjective appetite ratings and food intake were also assessed at postprandial study visits. There were no significant differences between interventions in energy intake (assessed by the 7 d diet diaries and at the ad libitum test meal), subjective appetite ratings or anthropometric measurements. However, there was a significant difference between interventions for systolic blood pressure, which decreased during the whole-grain intervention and increased during the control intervention (-2 v. 4 mmHg; P = 0·015). The present study found no effect of whole grains on appetite or food intake in healthy individuals; however, 48 g of whole grain consumed daily for 3 weeks did have a beneficial effect on systolic blood pressure. The findings from the present study therefore do not support epidemiological evidence that whole grains are beneficial in weight regulation, although further investigation in other population groups (such as overweight and obese) would be required. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of puddings with whey protein (WP) and polidextrose (PX) on appetite feelings and energy intake. A single-blind randomized, crossover study was carried out in 25 healthy adults. Participants consumed two different puddings, including control or test pudding (12.9?g WP and 6?g PX). Two testing days were completed, including satiety questionnaires and ad libitum lunch. For all participants, energy intake at lunch was similar after consumption of control or test pudding. Consumption of test pudding did not favor subjective feelings of appetite during satiation period, but it decreased iAUC for desire to eat by 24.2% (p?=?.049) and marginally decreased iAUC for hunger (p?=?.081) by 24.3% as compared with the control during the satiety. These data suggest that the consumption of pudding with WP and PX might be a useful strategy to decrease desire of eat. 相似文献

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition is a risk factor for mortality and various morbidities in the elderly. A low-energy intake often prevails and therapeutic interventions include the administration of dietary supplements, sometimes rich in proteins. We have tested the hypothesis that a protein-rich supplement inhibits appetite and decreases voluntary food intake. METHODS: Twelve mildly undernourished (BMI 21.3 +/- 2.4 kg/m2) elderly (84 +/- 7.8 yr) diseased persons were each studied under 3 conditions, in which they were given in random order at breakfast, and on consecutive days: either no supplement, a 250 kcal, 20 g protein supplement or a 250 kcal, 3.5 g protein supplement. Hunger, fullness, and desire to eat sensations were monitored half-hourly from before breakfast until lunch, and hourly from lunch until dinner. Food intake was assessed by weighing food before and after meals. Total energy and macronutrient intakes were calculated over 24 h. RESULTS: Both supplements increased energy intake (+185 kcal protein supplement, +176 kcal). Protein supplementation induced a net 17 g increase in protein intake (P < or = 0.0003). Neither supplement affected spontaneous food intake at lunch, dinner, or over the 24 h. Protein supplementation significantly depressed appetite in the breakfast to lunch period. CONCLUSION: A 250 kcal, 20 g protein supplement depresses hunger without affecting food intake in elderly diseased mildly undernourished persons. 相似文献

Background Several studies have shown that liquid and food intake interfere with the evaluation of body composition in adults. However, since there are no reports about this interference in the elderly population, the need to fast for this evaluation may be dispensable. Objectives The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of liquid and solid food on the measurement of body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Design Forty-one male volunteers aged 62 to 87 years participated in the study. The subjects were submitted to evaluation of body composition by DXA and BIA under fasting conditions and 1 hour after the ingestion of breakfast (500 ml of orange juice and one 50 g bread roll with butter). Results There was no significant difference in the variables fat-free mass (FFM) or fat mass (FM) between the fasting condition and the evaluation performed 1 hour after the meal as measured by BIA or DXA. There was also no significant difference when the same variables were compared between methods. Conclusion In the present study, the ingestion of 500 ml orange juice and of one bread roll with butter by elderly subjects did not affect the results of the parameters of body composition determined by BIA or DXA. Thus, these exams could be performed without the rigor of fasting, often poorly tolerated by the elderly. 相似文献

Artificial nutrition (enteral tube feeding and parenteral nutrition) is increasingly being used in hospital and community settings to provide short- and long-term nutritional support to a diverse range of patients with acute and chronic conditions. Despite these methods of feeding being used either in cojunction with diet, or as a sole source of nutrition, the issue of their satiating ability has previously been largely overlooked. The consensus that emerges from this review is that nutrients provided by enteral tube feeding or parenteral nutrition are not as effective as orally ingested nutrients at relieving appetite sensations or suppressing food intake. When artificial nutritional support is used as the sole source of nutrition, distressing appetite sensations may occur, even if full nutrient requirements are met by enteral tube or parenteral feeding. When used as a supplement to ad libitum food intake, enteral tube feeding and parenteral nutrition only partially suppress oral intake, and total energy intake is increased. The mechanisms responsible for the poorer satiating ability of artificial feeding methods, relative to food intake, are not clearly understood, but the bypassing of the upper gastrointestinal tract and associated cephalic phase response by these methods of nutrient delivery may be important. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Increasing exercise intensity has been shown to reduce energy intake in men. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise intensity on energy intake in women. DESIGN: Thirteen moderately active (peak oxygen uptake: 44.0 +/- 4.7 mL . kg(-1) . min(-1)) women [body mass index (in kg/m(2)): 22.2 +/- 2.4; age: 22.2 +/- 2.0 y] were subjected to 3 experimental conditions: control with no exercise and 2 equicaloric (350 kcal) low- (LIE) and high- (HIE) intensity exercise sessions at 40% and 70% of peak oxygen uptake, respectively. After each session, the participants ate ad libitum from buffet-type meals at lunch and dinner and ate snacks during the afternoon and evening. Visual analogue scales were used to rate appetite. RESULTS: More energy was ingested at lunchtime after the HIE session than after the control session (878 +/- 309 and 751 +/- 230 kcal, respectively; P = 0.02). Relative energy intake (postexercise energy intake corrected for the energy cost of exercise above the resting level) at lunch was lower after the LIE session than after the control session (530 +/- 233 and 751 +/- 230 kcal, respectively; P < 0.001) and was lower after the HIE session than after the control session (565 +/- 301 and 751 +/- 230 kcal, respectively; P < 0.01). Similarly, daily energy intake tended to increase during the HIE session relative to that during the control session. No treatment effect was found for appetite scores throughout the experiment. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that HIE increases energy intake in women. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Bedtime carbohydrate (CHO) intake in patients with type-2 diabetes may improve glucose tolerance at breakfast the next morning. We examined the 'overnight second-meal effect' of bedtime supplements containing 'rapid' or 'slow' CHOs. DESIGN: Randomized cross-over study with three test-periods, each consisting of two days on a standardized diet, followed by a breakfast tolerance test on the third morning. SETTING: The Lundberg Laboratory for Diabetes Research, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, G?teborg, Sweden. SUBJECTS: Sixteen patients with type 2 diabetes on oral agents and/or diet. INTERVENTIONS: Two different bedtime (22.00 h) CHO supplements (0.46 g available CHO/kg body weight) were compared to a starch-free placebo ('normal' food regimen). The CHOs were provided as uncooked cornstarch (slow-release CHOs) or white bread (rapid CHOs). RESULTS: On the mornings after different bedtime meals we found similar fasting glucose, insulin, free fatty acid and lactate levels. However, the glycaemic response after breakfast was 21% less after uncooked cornstarch compared to placebo ingestion at bedtime (406 +/- 46 vs 511 +/- 61 mmol min l(-1), P < 0.01). In contrast, it did not differ when the evening meal consisted of white bread (451 +/- 57 mmol min l(-1)) compared to placebo. According to an in vitro analysis, uncooked cornstarch contained approximately 4 times more slowly digestible starch as compared to white bread. CONCLUSIONS: A bedtime meal providing uncooked cornstarch improved breakfast tolerance the next morning while, in contrast, this was not found following a bedtime meal of white bread. The results are consistent, therefore, with the concept that an increased intake of slowly digestible carbohydrates exert an overnight second-meal effect in patients with type 2 diabetes. 相似文献
