BACKGROUND: Changes in lifestyle and increases in sedentary activities during recent decades have been shown to contribute to the prevalence of overweight in adolescents. OBJECTIVES: To determine the inter-individual variability and the day-to-day variations in daily energy expenditure (DEE) and activity pattern, and the energy costs and EE of the various activities of adolescents in free-living conditions. DESIGN: Sixty adolescents (four groups of 14-16 boys or girls aged 12-16 y) participated in this cross-sectional study during spring or autumn. Activity patterns and EE were determined during five consecutive days, using both a diary and the heart rate recording method validated by whole-body calorimetry and laboratory tests. RESULTS: Mean DEE increased significantly with age in boys, but not in girls. However, the physical activity level did not vary significantly with sex and age. Mean DEE was significantly higher in spring than in autumn in the 12.6-y-old subjects. It was also 21% higher during the free days than during the schooldays in the active subjects, but 7% lower in the sedentary subjects. The energy cost of 22 activities was determined. Time and energy devoted to moderate and sport activities exhibited great inter-individual variability. They were lower in girls than in boys and decreased with age. The increase in EE resulting from moderate and sport activities instead of sedentary activities ranged from 0.2 to 2.7 MJ/day over the week. CONCLUSION: The great variability in DEE of adolescents resulted mainly from differences in the nature, duration and intensity of physical activities during the free days.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a multidisciplinary weight reduction program on body composition and energy expenditure (EE) in severely obese adolescents. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Twenty-six severely obese adolescents, 12 to 16 years old [mean BMI: 33.9 kg/m(2); 41.5% fat mass (FM)] followed a 9-month weight reduction program including moderate energy restriction and progressive endurance and resistance training. Body composition was assessed by DXA, basal metabolic rate by indirect calorimetry, and EE by whole-body indirect calorimetry with the same activity program over 36-hour periods before starting and 9 months after the weight reduction period. RESULTS: Adolescents gained (least-square mean +/- SE) 2.9 +/- 0.2 cm in height, lost 16.9 +/- 1.3 kg body weight (BW), 15.2 +/- 0.9 kg FM, and 1.8 +/- 0.5 kg fat-free mass (FFM) (p < 0.001). Basal metabolic rate, sleeping, sedentary, and daily EE were 8% to 14% lower 9 months after starting (p < 0.001) and still 6% to 12% lower after adjustment for FFM (p < 0.05). Energy cost of walking decreased by 22% (p < 0.001). The reduction in heart rate during sleep and sedentary activities (-10 to -13 beats/min), and walking (-20 to -25 beats/min) (p < 0.001) resulted from both the decrease in BW and physical training. DISCUSSION: A weight reduction program combining moderate energy restriction and physical training in severely obese adolescents resulted in great BW and FM losses and improvement of cardiovascular fitness but did not prevent the decline in EE even after adjustment for FFM.  相似文献

Effects of progressive endurance training on energy expenditure (EE) were studied in thirteen elderly sedentary subjects (62.8 (SD 2.3) years) after 7 and 14 weeks of training. Daily EE (DEE) and energy cost of the various usual activities were measured over 48 h by whole-body indirect calorimetry. Free-living DEE (DEEFLC) was calculated from 7 d activity recordings and the energy costs of activities were measured in the calorimeters using the factorial method. DEEFLC did not vary significantly throughout the training period despite the additional energy cost of training sessions (0.60 (SD 0.15) MJ/d), because energy expended during free-living activities (EEACT) decreased by 4.8 (SD 7.1)% (P < 0.05) and 7.7 (SD 8.6)% (P < 0.01) after 7 and 14 weeks of training respectively. Measurements in the calorimeters showed that sleeping metabolic rate transiently increased by 4.6 (SD 3.2)% after 7 weeks of training (P < 0.001) and returned to its initial level after 14 weeks of training. BMR was 7.6 (SD 7.0)% (P < 0.01) and 4.1 (SD 6.1)% (P = NS) higher after 7 and 14 weeks of training respectively, than before training. Likewise, diet-induced thermogenesis increased from 3.7 (SD 2.5) to 7.2 (SD 2.8)% energy intake after 7 weeks of training (P < 0.05), and returned to its initial level after 14 weeks of training (4.2 (SD 2.6)% energy intake). Despite these changes, energy expended during activities and the corresponding DEE did not vary throughout the training period. It was concluded that: (1) DEEFLC remained constant throughout the training period due to a compensatory decrease in free-living EEACT; (2) progressive endurance training induced a transient increase in sleeping metabolic rate, BMR and diet-induced thermogenesis after 7 weeks which was not reflected in the energy expended during activities and DEE.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to determine: (1) daily energy expenditure (EE) of athletic and non-athletic adolescents of both sexes in free-living conditions; (2) day-to-day variations in daily EE during 1 week; (3) energy costs of the main activities; and (4) the effect of usual activity on EE during sleep, seated and miscellaneous activities. Fifty adolescents (four groups of eleven to fifteen boys or girls aged 16-19 years) participated in the study. Body composition was measured by the skinfold-thickness method, and VO2max and external mechanical power (EMP) by a direct method (respiratory gas exchanges) on a cycloergometer. Daily EE and partial EE in free-living conditions were computed from heart-rate (HR) recordings during seven consecutive days using individual prediction equations established from the data obtained during a 24 h period spent in whole-body calorimeters with similar activities. Fat-free mass (FFM), VO2max, EMP, daily EE and EE during sleep were significantly higher in athletic than in non-athletic subjects. After adjustment for FFM, VO2max, EMP, daily EE and EE during exercise were still higher in athletic than in non-athletic adolescents (P < 0.001). However, adjusted sleeping EE was not significantly different between athletic and non-athletic adolescents. Increases in exercise EE were partly compensated for by significant reductions in EE during schoolwork and miscellaneous activities. Thus, the differences in daily EE between athletic and non-athletic subjects resulted mainly from increases in FFM and EE during exercise (duration and energy cost).  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to determine whether differences in usual physical activity affect BMR, sleeping energy expenditure (EE), and EE during seated activities between athletic and non-athletic adolescents, and to establish individual relationships between heart rate and EE. Adolescents (n 49, four groups of eleven to fifteen boys or girls aged 16-19 years) participated in the study. Body composition was measured by the skinfold-thickness method and maximum O2 consumption (VO2max) by a direct method (respiratory gas exchange) on a cycloergometer. The subjects each spent 36 h in one of two large whole-body calorimeters. They followed a standardized activity programme including two periods of exercise simulating their mean weekly physical activities. Fat-free mass (FFM), VO2max, daily EE and EE during sleep and seated activities were significantly higher in athletic than in non-athletic subjects of both sexes. VO2max, daily EE and EE during exercise adjusted for FFM were higher in athletic than in non-athletic adolescents (P < 0.001), whereas sleeping EE, BMR and EE during seated activities and adjusted for FFM were not significantly different between athletic and non-athletic adolescents. However, sex differences in EE remained significant. Thus, differences in EE between athletic and non-athletic adolescents resulted mainly from differences in FFM and physical exercise. Usual activity did not significantly affect energy utilization of substrates. Finally, individual relationships were computed between heart rate and EE with activity programmes simulating the usual activities of athletic and non-athletic adolescents with the goal of predicting EE of the same subjects in free-living conditions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is characterized by rapid anatomic, physiologic, and behavioral alterations expected to induce changes in metabolic rate. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate variations in daily energy expenditure (DEE) and its main components during adolescence and to quantify their significant determinants. DESIGN: Eighty-three children and adolescents (44 boys and 39 girls aged 10-16 y) participated in this cross-sectional study. Tanner stages ranged from 1 to 5. Body composition was assessed by both the skinfold-thickness method and bioimpedance analysis. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined continuously over 24 h by using 2 whole-body calorimeters. The subjects followed a standardized activity program that included four 15-min periods of exercise on a cycle ergometer. RESULTS: Body composition, DEE, sleeping EE (SEE), resting EE, and EE during meals, miscellaneous activities, and physical exercise varied significantly with sex and stage of puberty. The DEE of boys and girls averaged 8.22 and 7.60 MJ in prepubertal children, 11.35 and 9.10 MJ in pubertal children, and 11.73 and 9.68 MJ in postpubertal adolescents, respectively. The significant determinants of DEE and SEE, respectively, were fat-free mass (r2 = 0.842 and 0.826), sex (r2 = 0.017 and 0.022), and season (r2 = 0.021 and 0.011). Stage of puberty and fat mass were not significant factors. DEE and SEE adjusted for fat-free mass were on average 5% higher in boys than in girls and 6% higher in spring than in autumn. CONCLUSIONS: The DEE of adolescents measured under standardized conditions varied with sex, body composition, and season, but not with stage of puberty. These variables could be predicted accurately from fat-free mass, sex, and season.  相似文献

This study validated a simplified factorial method for measuring energy expenditure (EE) against EE measured by doubly labelled water (DEE), and investigated whether adjustment for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and thermic effect of food (TEF) as described by Institute of Medicine (2002) improved the factorial measure. Seventeen normal weight subjects (10 females, seven males) were recruited from among university staff and students. Factorial EE was measured using a 16-activity-category method, published energy costs of activities and measured basal metabolic rate, before (FEE) and after (FEE(adj)) adjustment for EPOC and TEF, and by DEE. FEE underestimated daily EE by 14.6% relative to DEE (P = 0.000), but this underestimate was improved to 5.1% (P = 0.071) when FEE was adjusted for EPOC and TEF. Individual differences between DEE and FEE(adj) ranged from -20.2 to 17.6%, with 88% of subjects showing differences of less than +/-12%.  相似文献

目的 : 通过对单纯性肥胖儿童的能量代谢研究 ,了解肥胖状态下儿童能量代谢的变化 ,为进一步研究儿童肥胖的发病机制及防治措施提供依据。方法 : 对筛选出来的 54名肥胖儿童和 60名正常体重儿童进行基础代谢、休息代谢、标准化骑车试验以及能量摄入量和全日总能量消耗的测定。结果 : 基础代谢、休息代谢和标准化骑车试验能量消耗以 k J/ h表示 ,肥胖组儿童显著高于非肥胖组 (P<0 .0 5)。肥胖组儿童的全日能量摄入量、全日总能量消耗量均显著高于非肥胖组儿童 ,(P<0 .0 5)。肥胖组儿童中体力活动时间和重体力活动时间显著低于非肥胖组儿童 (P<0 .0 5) ,而轻体力活动时间和睡眠时间显著高于非肥胖组儿童 (P<0 .0 5)。基础代谢与去脂组织(FFM)呈显著正相关 ,用 FFM校正以后 ,基础代谢的能量消耗肥胖组儿童仍然高于非肥胖组儿童。结论 : 本研究观察的肥胖儿童并不存在能量代谢方面的缺陷使其发生肥胖的易感性增高。儿童肥胖 ,可能与其进食过多 ,加之每日运动量不足以及从事中体力活动、重体力活动的时间过少有一定关系  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Physical activity energy expenditure (EE) is an important determinant of health, and epidemiologists have used various methods, such as physical activity and energy intake recalls and records, to estimate energy cost. However, most epidemiologic studies have not validated these methods against the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique for measuring EE. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to compare EE estimated by 4 physical activity questionnaires with that obtained with the DLW technique in free-living postmenopausal women. DESIGN: We measured EE in kcal/d using the DLW method, the Harvard Alumni questionnaire, the Five City Project questionnaire, the Cross-Cultural Activity Participation Study (CAPS) Four Week Activity Recall, and the CAPS Typical Week Activity Survey in 65 healthy postmenopausal women. RESULTS: Compared with DLW, the Harvard Alumni questionnaire, the Five City Project questionnaire, and the CAPS Four Week Activity Recall overestimated (P < 0.05) daily EE by 62%, 16%, and 11%, respectively, whereas the CAPS Typical Week Activity Recall underestimated (P < 0.05) EE by 31%. Both the Harvard Alumni and Five City Project questionnaires overestimated EE in obese and overweight women. CONCLUSIONS: When using 3 of the 4 questionnaire methods, postmenopausal women overestimated EEs. Of all women, obese women overestimated daily EE the most.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: During feeding trials, it is useful to predict daily energy expenditure (DEE) to estimate energy requirements and to assess subject compliance. OBJECTIVE: We examined predictors of DEE during a feeding trial conducted in a clinical research center. DESIGN: During a 28-d period, all food consumed by 26 healthy, nonobese, young adults was provided by the investigators. Energy intake was adjusted to maintain constant body weight. Before and after this period, fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass were assessed by using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and DEE was estimated from the change (after - before) in body energy (DeltaBE) and in observed energy intake (EI): DEE = EI - DeltaBE. We examined the relation of DEE to pretrial resting energy expenditure (REE), FFM, REE derived from the average of REE and calculated from FFM [REE = (21.2 x FFM) + 415], and an estimate of DEE based on the Harris-Benedict equation (HB estimate) (DEE = 1.6 REE). RESULTS: DEE correlated (P < 0.001) with FFM (r = 0.78), REE (r = 0.73), average REE (r = 0.82), and the HB estimate (r = 0.81). In a multiple regression model containing all these variables, R(2) was 0.70. The mean (+/-SEM) ratios of DEE to REE, to average REE, and to the HB estimate were 1.86 +/- 0.06, 1.79 +/- 0.04, and 1.02 +/- 0.02, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Although a slightly improved prediction of DEE is possible with multiple measurements, each of these measurements suggests that DEE equals 1.60-1.86 x REE. The findings are similar to those of previous studies that describe the relation of REE to DEE measured directly.  相似文献

The magnitude of thermogenesis induced by a test meal (17% protein, 54% CHO, and 29% fat) was assessed using indirect calorimetry in six obese women before and after weight loss (mean loss: 11.2 kg) and compared with six nonobese matched controls at rest for 5 h and during and following graded moderate exercise on a bicycle ergometer at three workloads. The test meal contained 60% of the energy expended in basal state over 24 h (736-1020 kcal/meal according to the group). In obese subjects the net absolute increase in energy expenditure (delta EE) in response to the meal was similar between exercising and resting conditions (delta EE = 0.27 vs 0.32 kcal/min, respectively) but tended to be lower in obese women after weight loss (delta EE = 0.19 kcal/min while exercising and 0.25 kcal/min while resting, p less than 0.05) and in control subjects (delta EE = 0.16 vs. 0.25 kcal/min, respectively: p less than 0.05). These results show that the thermogenic response to a meal is not potentiated by moderate exercise.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Conflicting evidence exists on the causal factors underlying the development of excess adiposity in children. OBJECTIVE: We determined the effect of energy expenditure (EE), muscle energetics, and physical fitness on weight and fat gain in prepubertal girls with or without a predisposition to obesity. DESIGN: Normal-weight girls (n = 101) were recruited at 8 y of age according to parental body mass index. Eighty-eight girls completed the 2-y study, and the groups were as follows: LN, girls with 2 lean parents; LNOB, girls with 1 obese and 1 lean parent; and OB, girls with 2 obese parents. Measurements of weight, height, and body composition were taken 1 and 2 y after baseline. Girls underwent baseline measurements of EE by 24-h calorimetry and doubly labeled water, of muscle metabolism by (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance, and of fitness. RESULTS: Fat mass (FM) and percentage body fat (%BF) differed significantly between the groups at years 1 and 2; the OB group had higher FM (P = 0.03) and %BF (P = 0.046) at year 1 and higher FM (P = 0.047) at year 2 than did the LN group. After adjustment for baseline weight, group, time, ethnicity, and Tanner stage, sleep EE, basal EE, 24-h EE, and peak oxygen uptake were negatively associated with FM and %BF (P < 0.04). After adjustment for the same variables, muscle oxidative capacity and free-living total EE were negatively and positively predictive, respectively, of changes in %BF between 8 and 10 y of age (both P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Nonobese girls with 2 obese parents have a significant risk of developing obesity. High free-living total EE and low muscle oxidative capacity predict high rates of fat gain.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing and the causes of this are unknown. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether energy expenditure (EE), measured by 24-h calorimetry and doubly labeled water, differed in normal-weight-for-height, multiethnic prepubertal girls with or without a familial predisposition to obesity. DESIGN: Normal-weight, prepubertal white (n = 52), African American (n = 30), and Hispanic (n = 19) girls with a mean (+/-SD) age of 8.5 +/- 0.4 y were studied according to parental leanness and overweight or obesity. The girls were grouped according to whether they had 2 lean parents (n = 30), 2 obese parents (n = 27), or 1 lean and 1 obese parent (n = 44). Basal metabolic rate (BMR), sleeping metabolic rate (SMR), 24-h EE, respiratory quotient, heart rate, and activity were measured by 24-h room calorimetry; free-living total EE (TEE), activity-related EE (AEE), and physical activity level were measured by doubly labeled water. EE was standardized by fat-free mass (FFM). RESULTS: There were no significant differences among familial groups in weight, height, fat mass, FFM, or percentage body fat. African American girls had a higher FFM than did white or Hispanic girls (P < 0.05). BMR, SMR, 24-h EE, respiratory quotient, heart rate, and activity levels were not significantly different among familial groups. Additionally, there were no significant familial group differences in TEE, AEE, or physical activity level. However, BMR, SMR, and TEE were lower in African American girls than in white girls (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in EE between normal-weight, multiethnic prepubertal girls predisposed to obesity and those not predisposed to obesity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of a dietary questionnaire which was developed with the particular goal of measuring dietary intake in obese subjects. DESIGN: Reported energy intake was compared with 24 h energy expenditure measured in a chamber for indirect calorimetry (24 EE) and reported nitrogen intake with nitrogen in urine collected during the 24 h in the chamber. SUBJECTS: Twenty-nine overweight men and women, body mass index (BMI) ranging from 25.5 49.5 kg/m2. RESULTS: Reported energy intake correlated significantly with 24 EE (r = 0.50, P = 0.006) and reported urinary nitrogen correlated significantly with urinary nitrogen excretion (r=0.56, P=0.0015). Mean reported energy intake+/-s.d. was 10.2+/-3.6 MJ and mean 24 EEi s.d. was 10.3+/-1.9 MJ. Although this difference was small and non significant, it indicates some underreporting if one can assume that these overweight subjects are less physically active in the chamber than in free-living conditions. Reported nitrogen intake also suggested underreporting at the group level. However, when the data were analysed at the individual level it was clear that the underreporting errors did not increase with increasing degree of obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies with the SOS dietary questionnaire have demonstrated that it is possible to obtain plausible energy intakes from both obese and nonobese subjects. This present analysis further demonstrates that the questionnaire discriminates overweight subjects with high and low intakes of energy and protein, using unbiased biomarkers to judge validity. These data provide additional support for the usefulness of the SOS dietary questionnaire.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The onset of puberty is a period of rapid anatomical and physiological alterations expected to induce changes in metabolic rate and energy requirements of children. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the changes in anthropometrical features, body composition, physical capacities, and energy expenditure (EE) of boys and girls during the period of onset of puberty. METHODS: Sixteen children (8 boys and 8 girls were recruited in the same school-class and studied both at 10.4 and 12.8 years of age. Body composition was assessed by bioimpedance analysis. Peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2) was measured using an automated on-line system during exercising on a cycle ergometer. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined by whole-body indirect calorimetry over a 24-h period after a 12-h period of adaptation to the calorimeters. Volunteers followed the same activity programme that included four 15-min periods of exercise. RESULTS: During the onset of puberty, boys and girls gained 4.7 +/- 2.1 kg x y(-1) (P < 0.0003) fat-free mass (FFM), whereas fat mass gain was 1.0 +/- 1.2 kg x y(-1) (P < 0.05) in girls and 0.20 +/- 0.66 kg x y(-1) in boys (NS). Peak VO2 adjusted for differences in FFM was not significantly affected by gender or pubertal stage. However, adjusted external mechanical power performed at peak VO2 was higher in pubertal than in prepubertal children, by 40% (P < 0.0001) and 22% (P < 0.003) in boys and girls, respectively. It was also 17% (P < 0.0002) higher in pubertal boys than in pubertal girls. Daily and sleeping EE increased by 38% and 32% in boys and girls, respectively, during the 2.4-y period (P< 0.0001). Adjusted EEs were also significantly higher in pubertal than in prepubertal boys (P< 0.05 and P< 0.003), but not in girls. The main significant determinants of daily EE were FFM (r2 = 0.866, P < 0.0001), peak VO2 (r2 = 0.017, P < 0.04), and age (r2 = 0.014, P < 0.05). Tanner's stage was an additional determinant of sleeping EE (r2 = 0.025, P < 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: The increases in physical capacities and EE during the onset of puberty indicated clear gender differences, which could be explained mainly by alterations of body composition in boys and girls, and by changes in hormonal status in boys. They also stressed the significant increase in energy requirements of children, especially boys, at an early stage of puberty.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Energy intake at breakfast affects the performance of creativity tests, memory recall and voluntary physical endurance in children before lunch, and food craving during the whole day. OBJECTIVES: To assess the adequacy of breakfast energy supply (BES) and energy expenditure (EE) in adolescents during a schoolday without or with 2 h of physical education lesson (PEL) in the morning. DESIGN: Sixty adolescents (four groups of 14-16 boys and girls aged 12-16 y) participated in a cross-sectional study. Activity patterns and EE were determined by whole-body calorimetry during 36 h and in free-living conditions during 5 days using both a diary and the validated heart rate recording method. BES was determined by weighing individual foods. The pyloric energy flow was assessed using a model of fractional stomach emptying. RESULTS: BES averaged 24.9% (s.d.=6.1) of daily EE in the four groups of subjects. It covered the mean morning EE on a schoolday without PEL, but not in a schoolday with 2 h of PEL in any group. When PEL took place from 8-10 am the cumulative EE exceeded the cumulative pyloric energy flow after 105-150 min, that is during the PEL session, and the energy deficit increased until lunch. With a light breakfast (BES-1 s.d.) energy deficiency happened after 90 min. CONCLUSION: The results stress the need for a heavy breakfast for children and adolescents on the days with PEL in the morning, and a carbohydrate rich snack at 10 am to improve attention, memory and willing participation in physical activities.  相似文献

The energy expenditure (EE) of eight lean, eight adult-onset obese (AOO), and eight child-onset obese (COO) women was determined over three 24-h periods by the factorial method, modified by subject-keypunched and mechanically recorded activity diaries. Mean daily EE was significantly higher in the pooled obese women (2472 +/- 488 kcal) than in lean women (1979 +/- 302 kcal) due to higher energy costs of sedentary and light activity in the obese. EE during moderate-to-strenuous activity was similar between groups because lean women performed these activities more vigorously. AOO and COO differed significantly in neither mean EE nor habitual activity. Fat-free mass (FFM) was a better predictor than body weight of both mean daily EE and the energy cost of activity. These data indicate that EE is positively related to obesity. Obese women tend to limit possible EE by reducing the vigorousness of weight-supported activity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigating the hypothesis that a low resting metabolic rate (RMR) is a cause of obesity yielded discrepant findings. Two explanations for these findings are the use of imprecise methods to determine obesity and a failure to control for differences in fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) when comparing RMR values. OBJECTIVE: This study tested the hypothesis that RMR is lower in obese than in nonobese boys (with the use of precise methods to quantify body fatness and with adjustment for differences in both FM and FFM). DESIGN: Forty Chinese Singaporean boys aged 12.8-15.1 y were recruited. Boys were classified as obese (n = 20) or nonobese (n = 20) on the basis of their adiposity index (ratio of FM to FFM: >0.60 = obese, <0.40 = nonobese) determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. RMR was determined by using indirect calorimetry. RMR values were compared by using both linear (analysis of covariance) and log-linear (analysis of covariance with log-transformed data) regression to control for differences in FM and FFM. RESULTS: Age, height, and FFM did not differ significantly between groups. Body mass was 13 kg greater and FM was 16 kg greater in the obese boys than in the nonobese boys (P < 0.001). After control for FFM and FM, RMR did not differ significantly between the groups. CONCLUSION: When body composition is appropriately controlled for, RMR does not differ significantly between obese and nonobese boys.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare physical activity levels (PALs) of free-living adults with chronic paraplegia with World Health Organization recommendations and to compare energy expenditure between persons with complete vs. incomplete paraplegia. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Twenty-seven euthyroid adults (17 men and 10 women) with paraplegia (12.5 +/- 9.5 years since onset; 17 with complete lesions and 10 with incomplete lesions) participated in this cross-sectional study. Resting metabolic rate was measured by indirect calorimetry and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) by heart rate monitoring. PAL was calculated as TDEE/resting metabolic rate. Total body water was measured by deuterium dilution and fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) by calculation (FFM = total body water/0.732; FM = weight - FFM). Obesity was defined using the following percentage FM cutoffs: men 18 to 40 years >22% and 41 to 60 years >25%; and women 18 to 40 years >35% and 41 to 60 years >38%. RESULTS: Nineteen subjects (70.4%; 13 men and six women) were obese. Fifteen subjects (56%) engaged in structured physical activity 1.46 +/- 0.85 times during the observation period for a mean of 49.4 +/- 31.0 minutes per session. Despite this, mean PAL of the group was 1.56 +/- 0.34, indicative of limited physical activity. TDEE was 24.6% lower in subjects with complete paraplegia (2072 +/- 505 vs. 2582 +/- 852 kcal/d, p = 0.0372). DISCUSSION: PAL of the group was low, indicating that persons with paraplegia need to engage in increased frequency, intensity, and/or duration of structured physical activity to achieve a PAL >/=1.75 and, thereby, to offset sedentary activities of daily living.  相似文献

Determining total energy expenditure (EE) in children under free-living conditions has become of increasingly clinical interest. The aim of this study was to compare three different methods to assess EE triaxial accelerometry (TriTrac-R3D; Professional Products, Division of Reining International, Madison, WI, USA), activity diary and heart-rate (HR) monitoring combined with indirect calorimetry (IC). Twenty non-obese children and adolescents, aged 5.5 to 16.0 years, participated in this study. Results from the three methods were collected simultaneously under free-living conditions during the same 24 h schoolday period. Neither activity diary (5904 (sd 1756) kJ) nor the TriTrac-R3D (6389 (sd 979) kJ) showed statistical differences in 24 h total EE compared with HR monitoring (5965 (sd 1911) kJ). When considering different physical activity (PA) periods, compared with HR monitoring, activity diary underestimates total EE during sedentary periods (P<0.001) and overestimates total EE and PA-EE during PA periods (P<0.001) because of the high energy cost equivalence of activity levels. The TriTrac-R3D, compared with HR monitoring, shows good agreement for assessing PA-EE during PA periods (mean difference +0.25 (sd 1.9) kJ/min; 95 % CI for the bias -0.08, 0.58), but underestimates PA-EE and it does not show good precision during sedentary periods (-0.87 (sd 1.4) kJ/min, P<0.001). Correlation between the vector magnitude generated by the TriTrac-R3D accelerometer and EE of activities derived from HR monitoring is high. When compared with the HR method, the TriTrac-R3D and activity diary are not systematically accurate and must be carefully used for the assessment of children's EE depending on the purpose of each study.  相似文献
