A 64-item Chinese food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) combined with open questions on types of staples and cooking oil most frequently consumed was designed for a prospective study in Taiwan to appraise participants' usual intake. We examined its reproducibility and validity. The form was administered three times at three-month intervals by face-to-face interview to 83 senior college students majoring in nutrition, in order to recall their usual dietary intake over the past six months. They also completed five-day (includes both weekends) diet records (DR) after each interview. Averaged intake levels of most nutrients assessed by the three FFQs were slightly higher than those of 15-day DR. Intraclass correlation coefficients for nutrient intakes assessed by three FFQs three months apart ranged from 0.37 for saturated fat to 0.82 for alcohol (average: 0.52). Averaged Pearson correlation coefficients between the unadjusted and energy-adjusted nutrient intakes measured by DR and by the third FFQ (which asked about diet during the six months encompassing the diet records) were 0.40 and 0.35, respectively, not including vitamins A and C. These correlations were higher (average: 0.47) after adjusting for the daily variation of the diet records. On average, 50% subjects were correctly classified into the same tertiles by both methods; 11% of the subjects were misclassified to extreme categories. These data indicate that this FFQ for Chinese-speaking people in Taiwan is reproducible and provides a useful measure of intake for many nutrients over a six-month period.  相似文献

The authors developed a self-administered 181-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intake during pregnancy for Finnish women from August 1995 to July 1996. In the validation study (n = 113), the data that were collected by using two 5-day food records completed during the eighth month of pregnancy were compared with FFQ data. The intake of foods and nutrients was higher as determined by FFQ than that assessed using food records. Pearson correlation coefficients for nutrients, after adjustment for energy, ranged from 0.19 (vitamin E) to 0.70 (thiamin) and, for foods, from 0.03 (high-fat milk) to 0.84 (low-fat milk). Energy adjustment improved the correlations for nutrients. Correction for attenuation improved correlations for both foods and nutrients. On average, 70% of the foods and 69% of the nutrients fell into the same or adjacent quintiles, according to the FFQ and the food record. In the reproducibility study, 111 women completed the FFQs twice at a 1-month interval. The intraclass correlation coefficients for nutrients ranged from 0.42 (ethanol) to 0.72 (sucrose, riboflavin, and calcium), and for foods, they ranged from 0.44 (ice cream) to 0.91 (coffee). The authors conclude that the FFQ has an acceptable reproducibility and represents a useful tool for categorizing pregnant women according to their dietary intake.  相似文献

A self-administered 97-item simple food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), without portion size questions for most items, was completed twice at an one-year interval by 88 men and women in central Japan to evaluate its reproducibility. This FFQ was further validated by referring to four 4-day weighed dietary records (DRs) which were performed at 3-month intervals. Mean energy and 18 nutrient intakes measured by the first and the second FFQs were quite similar to those measured by the DRs. In our reproducibility study, Pearson and intraclass correlation coefficients, adjusted for energy intake, sex and age, ranged from 0.48 to 0.82 (median = 0.67). In the validation study, adjusted and de-attenuated correlation coefficients between the second FFQ and the DRs ranged from 0.42 for iron to 0.83 for calcium (median = 0.61). The proportion of subjects classified by the FFQ into the same or adjacent quintiles defined by the DRs was between 65.9% and 83.0% (median = 69.9%). These findings essentially suggested that our FFQ is well reproducible and sufficiently valid, and therefore, reasonably useful for nutritional epidemiological studies for Japanese diets, particularly for those of Tokai Area.  相似文献

Background

The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) has been used throughout the world for epidemiological purposes. Because dietary habits vary greatly, the FFQ must be tailored for use with specific populations. The usefulness of FFQs in Japan was assessed by reviewing questionnaires developed and validated in that country.

Methods

A literature search was conducted to identify articles on the development and/or validation of FFQs for Japanese populations. For each FFQ identified, validation studies were used to abstract its characteristics and information. The correlation coefficients between diet records (DRs) and FFQ estimates and those between the same FFQs completed twice were used to evaluate validity and reproducibility, respectively, of the questionnaires.

Results

Twenty-one eligible FFQs were identified. They were found to be reasonably valid and reproducible. The median of correlation coefficients between DRs and FFQs ranged from 0.31 to 0.56 for target nutrients, and that between the same FFQs completed twice within a period of 9 months to 1 year ranged from 0.50 to 0.72. Relatively poor validity was found for FFQ estimates on consumption of potatoes, seaweed, sodium, niacin, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. For the purpose of analysis, FFQs were divided into long FFQs (97 or more food items) and short FFQs (<70 items); the former had slightly higher validity.

Conclusion

FFQs are useful for assessing dietary intake in Japan, although careful consideration is required for the food groups and nutrients for which FFQs had low validity.Key words: food frequency questionnaire, validity, reproducibility, nutrient, food group  相似文献

We assessed the reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) among middle-aged and older adults in Semarang, Indonesia. A total of 259 subjects aged 40–80 years completed two FFQs (nine-month apart) and nine 24 h dietary recalls (24HDRs, as a reference method). The reproducibility of the FFQ was analyzed using correlation coefficient, intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), weighted kappa statistics and misclassification analysis. The validity was estimated by comparing the data acquired from FFQ1 and 24HDRs. The crude Pearson’s correlation coefficients and ICC for total energy and nutrients between FFQ1 and FFQ2 ranged from 0.50 to 0.81 and 0.44 to 0.78, respectively. Energy adjustment decreased the correlation coefficients for most nutrients. The crude, energy-adjusted and de-attenuated correlation coefficients for FFQ1 and 24HDRs ranged from 0.41 to 0.70, 0.31 to 0.89 and 0.54 to 0.82, respectively. The agreement rates for the same or adjacent quartile classifications were 81.1–94.6% for two FFQs and 80.7–89.6% for FFQ1 and 24HDRs. The weighted kappa values were 0.21 to 0.42 for two FFQs and 0.20 to 0.34 for FFQ1 and 24HDRs. A positive mean difference was found in the Bland–Altman analyses for energy and macronutrients. The FFQ could be acceptable for nutritional epidemiology study among Indonesians.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the validity of the Anti Cancer Council of Victoria food frequency questionnaire (ACCVFFQ) relative to seven-day weighed food records (WFRs) in 63 women of child-bearing age. METHOD: 63 women completed WFRs to assess iron intake as part of a study on iron deficiency. These women also completed the ACCVFFQ. Nutrient intakes were computed independently for the WFRs and FFQs. Intakes were compared as group means, by correlation and by quintile classification, adjusting for day-to-day variation in intakes, and for energy intake. Individual differences in results were also examined. RESULTS: The strongest associations between WFR and FFQ results were energy-adjusted, log-transformed and adjusted for day-to-day variability in intake. Correlation coefficients ranged from 0.28 for vitamin A to 0.78 for carbohydrate. Mean intakes from the WFRs and FFQs were within +/- 20% for 21 of 27 nutrients. Poor agreement between FFQs and WFRs for retinol intake was due to the inclusion of liver in two WFRs, an item which is not included in the FFQ. CONCLUSION: The ACCVFFQ performs as well as other FFQs for which validation data are available. The relatively poor measurement of retinol is consistent with other data, and with the limited number of foods in which this nutrient is abundant. IMPLICATIONS: The availability of an optically scannable valid instrument for assessing dietary intake will facilitate epidemiological studies of diet and disease, an area of current research priority.  相似文献

The accuracy (reproducibility and relative validity) of a self-administered quantitative food frequency questionnaire including 180 food items was evaluated. A total of 38 elderly women kept multiple weighed diet records for a total of 14 days over a 6-week period and filled in the questionnaire both before and after this period. Spearman rank correlations between the nutrient intakes from the two questionnaires varied from 0.43 for carbohydrate to 0.88 for energy percentage from alcohol. The median correlation was 0.70. Seven women whose recorded average energy intake was less than 1.17 times their measured basal metabolic rate were excluded from the analysis comparing the questionnaire and the diet records. The first questionnaire gave on the average 10% higher nutrient median values than the records, while the second questionnaire did not in general produce higher values. Unadjusted correlation coefficients comparing intakes measured by the two methods ranged from 0.31 for vitamin C to 0.79 for energy percentage from carbohydrate, the median coefficient being 0.61. On the average 77% of the subjects were classified in the same (+/- 1) quintile in the first food frequency questionnaire and the diet records. The present study indicates that the self-administered quantitative food frequency questionnaire is useful for measuring individual or group intakes for a variety of nutrients.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVESThis study aimed to examine the reproducibility of food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) designed for young female nurses in the Korea Nurses'' Health Study.SUBJECTS/METHODSThe reproducibility of web-based, self-administered FFQs was evaluated among 243 Korean female nurses. The first FFQ (FFQ1) was administered from March 2014 to February 2019 and the second FFQ (FFQ2) from November 2019, with a mean interval of 2.8 years between the FFQs (range, 9 months–5.6 years). Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients (r values) and quartile agreements between FFQ1 and FFQ2 were calculated for intakes of energy, nutrients, and foods.RESULTSPearson correlation coefficients ranged from 0.41 to 0.55 (median r = 0.51) for energy and raw nutrients and from 0.16 to 0.46 (median r = 0.36) for energy-adjusted nutrients. Spearman correlation coefficients ranged from 0.25 to 0.72 (median r = 0.41) for food items. The percentages of women who were classified into the same or adjacent quartile were 77% to 84% (median = 82%) for raw nutrients and 69% to 86% (median = 78%) for foods.CONCLUSIONSThe results indicated that the web-based FFQ used in the Korea Nurses'' Health Study has acceptable reproducibility.  相似文献

Accuracy in measuring intake of dietary constituents is an important issue in studies reporting the associations between diet and chronic diseases. We modified a Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to include foods of interest in the field of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. The aim of the current study was to determine the reliability and validity of the AD-CSIROFFQ in 148 cognitively normal older adults. The AD-CSIROFFQ was completed before and after completion of a four-day weighed food record. Of the 508 food and beverage items reported, 309 had sufficient consumption levels for analysis of reliability. Of the 309 items, over 78% were significantly correlated between the two questionnaire administrations (Spearman’s rank correlations). We used two additional methods to assess absolute nutrient intake agreement between the AD-CSIROFFQ and the weighed food records (Pearson’s correlation coefficients and Bland–Altman plots) and quintile rankings to measure group level agreement. The adequate correlations observed between questionnaire responses suggest that the AD-CSIROFFQ is reliable. All nutrient intakes were acceptable for ranking of individuals on a group level, whilst the agreement levels with respect to the weighed food records for 11 of the 46 nutrients show validity in terms of their individual level absolute intake. The AD-CSIROFFQ makes an important contribution to the tools available for assessing usual dietary intake in groups of older adults with respect to AD research.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In epidemiologic field studies, a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is one of the most feasible tools to assess usual dietary habits. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reproducibility of consumption of foods and nutrients assessed with a self-administered short FFQ in a Japanese general population. METHODS: We have investigated 1-year interval reproducibility of a self-administered short FFQ, comprising 47 food items, and 8 frequency categories, among 1,918 subjects (844 males and 1,074 females) who participated in health check-up programs in Central Japan. RESULTS: Intakes of energy and 24 nutrients along with 15 food groups estimated using the first questionnaire (FFQ1) were approximately equal to those using the second (FFQ2). Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (CCs) between intakes of nutrients quantified with FFQ1 and FFQ2 in males were distributed as 0.74 - 0.66- 0.55 (maximum - median - minimum), and intraclass CCs (ICCs) as 0.85 - 0.78 - 0.67. Among females, Spearman's rank CCs were distributed as 0.73 - 0.62 - 0.54, and ICCs as 0.84 - 0.77 - 0.69. Percentages of exact agreement, exact agreement plus agreement within adjacent categories and disagreement according to quintile categorization were 43%, 80%, and 1%, for males, and 42%, 79%, and 1% for females. Reproducibility figures were higher for the elderly than for young people in both sexes. CONCLUSIONS: Our FFQ yielded substantially high reproducibility and it may be applicable for assessing consumption of foods/food groups and energy and selected nutrients for the middle-aged and elderly population in Japan.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare estimated nutrient intakes from 3-day food records vs Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) in a large cohort of individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. DESIGN: Dietary data from 315 HIV-positive participants enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study were collected. Nutrient intake data estimated from the Block FFQ were compared with multiple 3-day food records done over the same time period. SUBJECTS/SETTING: Participants enrolled in Nutrition for Healthy Living, an ongoing cohort study based in Boston, MA, were studied. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Using 3-day food records as the gold standard, we compared estimated nutrient intakes between the two assessment methods by (a) median of individual differences in intake, (b) correlation coefficients, (c) quintile ranking, and (d) intakes less than the Dietary Reference Intakes. Nutrient intake estimates between the two methods were compared using Spearman, Pearson, and deattenuated correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Median reported intakes of all macronutrients and most micronutrients were significantly less on the FFQ for both men and women. Deattenuated correlations were less than 0.5 for 86% of the men and for 68% of the women. Mean percent agreement for quintile ranking was 30%. CONCLUSIONS: In this large cohort of HIV-infected adults, we found significant differences between FFQs and food records in estimates of absolute dietary intakes, correlation coefficients, quintile rankings, and proportions of subjects consuming less than the Dietary Reference Intakes. These findings have implications for the interpretation and application of dietary intake data from FFQs in specialized populations.  相似文献

Currently, there is no FFQ designed to capture the intakes of the long-chain (LC) n-3 PUFA. The objectives of this study were to validate a new LC n-3 PUFA FFQ by comparison with 3 d weighed food records (FR) and to determine its reproducibility assessed 4 to 6 weeks apart. Healthy male and female subjects (n 53) were recruited from Wollongong and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. The FFQ and FR were analysed for LC n-3 PUFA intakes using a nutrient analysis software package and these intakes were compared using Wilcoxon signed rank tests and Spearman correlation coefficients. Bland-Altman analysis and quintile assignment assessed the agreement between the two methods and the FFQ's ability to rank individuals according to intakes, respectively. Comparison of intakes from FFQ and FR correlated significantly for total LC n-3 PUFA, EPA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and DHA, 0.75, 0.64, 0.62 and 0.72, respectively (P < 0.05); hence, there is reasonable agreement between the FFQ and the FR in assessing LC n-3 PUFA intakes. Quintile assignments correctly assigned 49 % of subjects into the same quintiles and 87 % of subjects were correctly assigned either to the same or adjacent quintiles. The FFQ was reproducible for intakes of LC n-3 PUFA, EPA, DPA and DHA with Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.88, 0.88, 0.90 and 0.87, respectively. In conclusion, the new FFQ is a valid and reproducible method that can be used to estimate the LC n-3 PUFA intake of healthy adults.  相似文献

Dietary intake is an important predictor of health and disease outcomes. This cross-sectional study evaluated the relative validity and reproducibility of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for assessing energy and nutrient intake in older adults. Dietary data were collected 2018–2019 in Auckland, New Zealand from a convenience sample of community-dwelling adults (65–74 years, n = 294, 37% male) using a 109-item self-administered FFQ at baseline (FFQ1) and four weeks later to assess reproducibility. FFQ1 was compared to a four-day food record to determine relative validity. Agreement between dietary assessment tools was assessed for both raw and energy-adjusted nutrient intakes using paired t-tests, correlation coefficients, weighted kappa statistic, Bland–Altman plots, and linear regression analysis. Energy adjustments moderately improved the relative validity and reproducibility for most nutrients. For energy and energy-adjusted nutrient intakes, the mean correlation coefficients were 0.38 (validity) and 0.65 (reproducibility); the mean weighted kappa statistics were 0.27 (validity) and 0.51 (reproducibility). A significant slope of bias was present in 54% (validity) and 25% (reproducibility) of Bland–Altman plots. The Researching Eating, Activity, and Cognitive Health (REACH) FFQ has acceptable relative validity and good reproducibility for ranking nutrient intakes in older New Zealand adults, but is less suitable for assessing absolute nutrient intakes.  相似文献

A self-administered food use questionnaire which included 276 food items and mixed dishes and a portion size picture booklet with 122 photographs was developed for a large lung cancer intervention trial among approximately 27,000 Finnish men aged 50-69 years. The reproducibility and validity of this questionnaire were studied from March to October 1984. In the reproducibility study, 121 men aged 55-69 years completed the questionnaire three times, at three-month intervals. The intraclass correlations varied from 0.56 for vitamin A to 0.88 for alcohol, with most falling between 0.60 and 0.70. In the validity study, 190 men of similar age kept food consumption records for 12 two-day periods, distributed evenly over a period of six months, and filled in the questionnaire both before and after this period. Correlations between nutrient intake values from the food records and the food use questionnaires ranged from 0.40 for selenium to 0.80 for alcohol. Among subjects who belonged to the lowest quintile on the basis of the food record measurement, an average of 51 per cent fell into the same quintile and 76 per cent fell into the lowest two quintiles when they were categorized on the basis of the food use questionnaire. Findings were similar for the upper tail of the distribution. These data indicate that the self-administered food use questionnaire is useful for measuring individual or group intakes for a variety of nutrients.  相似文献

The validity of a quantitative self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was tested by comparison with 7-d weighed food records (7DWR). Subjects for the study were 24 females between 20 and 43 years of age (mean = 24 years). The main aim of the FFQ was to classify subjects according to their total fat intake.
The mean nutrient intakes estimated by the FFQ were consistently and significantly higher than the estimates by the 7DWR. Rank correlations showed that the FFQ was able to rank subjects similarly for total energy intake, fat, alcohol and fibre intake as well as for the percentage contribution of macronutrients to energy intake. Intra-class correlations showed that the two methods did not agree at the individual level for energy and macronutrient intake except alcohol. These results suggest that the FFQ was suitable for ranking the subjects according to their total fat intake but was not suitable for estimating the individual nutrient intake or average nutrient intake of this relatively small group.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for use among young Japanese children. Forty-seven mothers of children aged 6 y completed two 3-d diet records and two FFQs over a 6-mo period. The FFQ asked the mothers how often, on average, their children consumed each of the 162 food items listed and what the usual serving size of each item was during the 6 mo prior to the study. Intakes of macro- and micronutrients were estimated by multiplying the frequency by the serving size for each food item. The validity of the FFQ was assessed by comparison of the two 3-d diet records. The reproducibility of the FFQ was based on the first and second FFQ administrations. The validity correlation ranged from 0.05 for α-tocopherol to 0.59 for retinol. The median correlation was 0.40. The reproducibility correlation was higher than 0.50 for all nutrients. For most nutrients, FFQ had acceptable reproducibility, whereas validity showed low to moderate correlations. Our FFQ could reasonably rank individuals according to dietary intake for epidemiologic studies, although the validity of the questionnaire is limited to specific nutrients.  相似文献

A longitudinal study was conducted to validate a 68-item semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for assessing nutrient intake among pregnant women in rural China. The interview administrated FFQs were conducted at the start of the third trimester (FFQ1) and repeated three months later prior to delivery (FFQ2), and compared with six repeated 24-hour recalls collected between the FFQs. From June to September 2004, 125 women at 23 to 26 weeks of gestation were recruited into the study in two rural counties in Shaanxi province, China. Pearson correlation coefficients for crude nutrients assessed by FFQ1 and FFQ2 had a mean of 0.46, and ranged from 0.31 for thiamin to 0.61 for fat. Pearson correlation coefficients estimated by FFQ2 and 24-hour recalls had a mean of 0.62 for all nutrients, and ranged from 0.53 for cholesterol and carotene to 0.70 for alpha-vitamin E and potassium. De-attenuated coefficients had a mean of 0.69 for all nutrients, and ranged from 0.58 for cholesterol to 0.77 for alpha- vitamin E. Bland-Altman plots revealed significant relationships between the difference and the average of the two methods with larger differences at higher average intakes. On average, 74% of participants were classified into the same or adjacent nutrient intake quintiles, while 1% were grossly misclassified to opposite quintiles. In conclusion, this FFQ has adequate reproducibility and validity for most nutrients but would benefit from the addition of wheat porridge to ensure it is suitable for assessing dietary intake in pregnant women in rural China.  相似文献

To evaluate the validity and reliability of the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) used in the Shanghai Women's Health Study (SWHS), 200 SWHS participants were recruited for a dietary calibration study. Study participants completed an FFQ at baseline and 24-h dietary recalls (24-HDR) twice per month consecutively for 12 months. At the end of the study, a second FFQ was administered. Of the 200 study participants, 196 completed 24 or more days of 24-h dietary recalls, 191 completed two FFQs from whom the results of this report were based. The FFQ included the foods that accounted for 86% of the foods recorded in the 24-HDR surveys. Validity of the FFQ was evaluated by comparing intake levels of major nutrients and foods obtained from the second FFQ with those derived from the multiple 24-HDR. The median intake for major nutrients, rice, poultry and meat derived from the second FFQ and the 24-HDR was similar, with the differences ranging from 1.3 to 12.1%. The FFQ tended to overestimate the intake level of total vegetables and total fruits, and the differences were explained mainly by over-reporting seasonal vegetables and fruits consumption in the FFQ. Nutrient and food intake assessed by the FFQ and the multiple 24-HDR correlated very well, with the correlation coefficients being 0.59-0.66 for macronutrients, 0.41-0.59 for micronutrients, and 0.41-0.66 for major food groups. The reliability of the FFQ was assessed by comparing the correlation and median intake of nutrients and food groups obtained from the two FFQs that were administered approximately 2 y apart. The median intake levels for selected nutrients and food groups derived from the two FFQs were similar with differences below 10%. At the individual level, the intake levels of these dietary variables obtained from two FFQs also correlated well. When nutrient and food group intakes were categorized into quartiles, FFQ and 24-HDR produced exact agreement rates between 33 and 50%. Misclassification to adjacent quartile was common, ranging from 34-48%, while misclassification to an extreme quartile was rare (1-6%). These data indicate that the SWHS FFQ can reliably and accurately measure usual intake of major nutrients and food groups among women in Shanghai.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although the associations of dietary glycemic index (GI) and dietary glycemic load (GL) with many chronic diseases have been examined in epidemiologic studies, information regarding the reproducibility and validity of these measures assessed with the use of food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs) is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We examined the reproducibility and validity of dietary GI and dietary GL and of carbohydrate intake as assessed by using an FFQ. DESIGN: Swedish men (n = 141) aged 40-74 y completed 2 FFQs 1 y apart and two 1-wk weighed diet records 6 mo apart. Dietary GI, dietary GL, and carbohydrate intake (starches and sugars) were calculated from both FFQs and diet records. We used intraclass correlations between the 2 FFQs to measure reproducibility and Pearson correlations between the diet records and the FFQs to assess the relative validity. RESULTS: Reproducibility of the FFQs was 0.66 (95% CI: 0.56, 0.75) for dietary GI, 0.61 (95% CI: 0.50, 0.71) for dietary GL, and 0.61 (95% CI: 0.50, 0.71) for carbohydrate. The correlations between the FFQs and diet records were 0.62 (95% CI: 0.45, 0.74) for dietary GI, 0.77 (95% CI: 0.56, 0.88) for dietary GL, and 0.76 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.88) for carbohydrate after adjustment for within-person variation in the FFQs and diet records. CONCLUSION: In this sample of men, an FFQ measured dietary GI, dietary GL, and carbohydrate with reproducibility and validity similar to other commonly studied nutritional factors.  相似文献
