The TCM Remedies for Treatment of AIDS——A Clinical Report of 60 Cases

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of TCM remedies in treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Method: 60 cases of AIDS or AIDS-related complex (ARC) were divided into four different TCM patterns and treated accordingly. Results: Of the 60 cases, 52 patients (86.7%) experienced remarkable improvement in general symptoms and lab findings, including virus loading and CD4 T lymphocyte count. Conclusion: The TCM remedies could definitely improve the symptoms and signs of AIDS or ARC, enhance the immune function, decrease the possibility of contracting opportunistic infection, improve the life quality, and prolong the survival period, with no apparent toxic and side effects.     

Treatment of Peptic Ulcer with Xiao Jianzhong Tang——A Report of 80 Cases

With Xiao Jianzhong Tang (小建中汤), the author has successfully treated 80 cases of peptic ulcer. The therapeutic effects obtained were compared with that of the Western medicine. A report follows.     

Treatment of Tension Headache with Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture ——A Report of 40 Cases

Tension headache is a most common type of headache, which falls into the category of Toutong （头痛 headache）, or Toufeng （头风 head-wind） in TCM. It is characterized by bilateral mild to moderate non-pulsatile headache, without accompanying nausea, vomiting or photophobia, and is not aggravated by physical activities. Authors have in recent years treated 40 cases of this condition with Chai Hu Shu Gan San （柴胡疏肝散 Bupleurum Powder for Dredging the Liver） plus acupuncture, and obtained a satisfactory therapeutic effect. A report follows.     

Treatment of Infantile Bronchiolitis with Jie Jing Ding Chuan Zhi Xiao Tang—— A Report of 45 Cases

Objective： To evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of Jie Jing Ding Chuan Zhi Xiao Tang （解痉定喘止哮汤 the Tetany- Pant- and Wheeze-relieving Decoction） on infantile bronchiolitis. Method： Seventy-five eligible cases were randomly divided into a treatment group （N = 45） and a control group （N=30）. Patients in the treatment group were treated with Tetany-Pant- and Wheeze-relieving Decoction, the ingredients of which include Su Zi （苏子 Fructus Perillae）, Di Long （地龙 Pheretima）, Qian Hu （前胡 Radix Peucedani）, Bai Qu Cai （白屈菜 Herba Chelidonii）, Ma Huang （麻黄 Herba Ephedrae）, Ku Xing Ren （苦杏仁 Semen Armeniacae Amarum）, Bai Gou （白果 Semen Gingkgo）, Quan Xie （全蝎 Scorpio）, Bai Xian Pi （白鲜皮 Cortex Dictamni）, Jiang Can （僵蚕 Bombyx Batryticatus）, She Gan （射干 Rhizoma Belamcandae） and Dong Hua （冬花 Flos Farfarae）. Patients in the control group were treated with Xiao Er Ke Chun Ling Chong Ji （小儿咳喘灵冲剂 Medicinal Granules for Infantile Cough and Pant）. Result： A total effective rate of 93.3% was achieved in the treatment group and only 73.3% was obtained in the control group. Conclusion： The Tetany- Pant- and Wheeze-relieving Decoction is significantly effective in treating infantile bronchiolitis （P〈0.05）.     

TCM Treatment of Thromboangiitis Obliterans——A Report of 64 Cases

Thromboangiitis Obliterans (TAO), a common peripheral vascular disease with a long illness course and grave sufferings, can cause acromelic gangrene, ulcer and even amputation at the late stage. We have for many years used TCM syndrome differentiation to diagnose and treat the disease with good therapeutic results. The treatment of 64 TAO cases from 2001 to 2002 is reported as follows.     

TCM Treatment of Male Immune Infertility——A Report of 100 Cases

To observe the therapeutic effect of Yikang Tang （益抗汤 Yikang Decoction） for male immune infertility. Methods： 100 cases of male immune infertility in the treatment group were treated with Yikang Decoction, while 100 cases treated with prednisone as the controls. Physical exam, routine semen and prostate exams, and exams for presence of anti-sperm antibody （AsAb） and mycoplasma in the serum or seminal plasma were carded out. Results： 1） The serum and seminal plasma AsAb levels decreased significantly （P〈0.01） in both the groups after treatment, with a more remarkable effect in the treatment group. 2） The sperm density and percentage of motile spermatozoa increased significantly in the two groups, but more significantly in the treatment group after treatment. The pregnancy rate of their wives was higher in the treatment group than that in the control group （P〈0.01）. 3） The sperm agglutination rate in the two groups decreased, but more significantly in the treatment group after treatment. 4） The improvement rate of the symptoms and the stability of the therapeutic effect were more dramatic in the treatment group than that in the control group （P〈0.01） after termination of drug administration. Conclusion： The Yikang Decoction has a more stable effect for male immune infertility than prednisone.     

Clinical Observation on Treatment of Ecthyma with Ningshu Xiji

Ningshu Xiji (宁舒洗剂), a compound TCM Lotion developed by Prof. Chen Shuchang of the Oriental Hospital, has the effects of clearing away heat and the toxic materials, removing dampness by diuresis and promoting blood circulation. With Li Zhi Cao (荔枝草 Herba Salviae Plebeiae), Tu Fu Ling (土茯苓Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae) , Jin Yin Hua (金银花Flos Lonicerae), and Puxiao (朴硝 Mirabilitum) as main ingredients, the lotion has the non-toxic components and achieves very satisfactory therapeutic effects for the ecthyma characterized by downward flow of damp-heat. From August 2002 to June 2003, Ningshu Xiji was used to apply to the surface of wounds of 34 ecthyma patients based on the routine treatment. External Application of Chinese Drugs on Acupoint Shenque Combined with Salpingostomy for Treatment of Sterility Caused by Obstruction of the Fallopian Tube——A Clinical Report of 45 Cases

Objective： To observe the therapeutic effect of external application of Chinese drugs on acupoint Shenque （CV 8） combined with salpingostomy for treatment of sterility caused by obstruction of the fallopian tube. Method： 75 cases were randomly divided into the following 2 groups. Forty-five patients in the treatment group were treated with external application of Chinese drugs on acupoint Sbenque （CV 8） combined with salpingostomy, while 30 patients in the control group were treated with salpingostomy only. Results： The results showed that in the treatment group, 26 cases were cured, 11 cases improved, and 8 cases failed, with a total effective rate of 82.22%; while in the control group, 14 cases were cured, 7 cases improved, and 9 cases failed, with a total effective rate of 70.00%. There is a significant difference in the total effective rate between the two groups （P〈0.05）. Conclusion： The therapeutic effect of external application of Chinese drugs on acupoint Shenque combined with salpingostomy is better than that of salpingostomy only.

Acupuncture Treatment of Obesity with Magnetic Needles——A Report of 100 Cases

Objective: To evaluate the effect of acupuncture for obesity. Method: Points were selected according to the pattern identified, and punctured with the No.30 magnetic needles. Result: A total effective rate of 97% was achieved after 15 sessions were completed. Conclusion: The therapy can reduce the body weight by accelerating the peristalsis and inhibiting the hunger sensation.     

Acupuncture Treatment for Multiple Aortitis ——A Clinical Report of 40 Cases

In order to evaluate the therapeutic effects of acupuncture-moxibustion on multiple aortitis, 80 cases （with involvement of the main arteries in the head and arms） were randomly divided into a treatment group treated with acupuncture-moxibustion, and a control group treated with TCM and western drugs. The therapeutic effects were compared. The total effective rate was 95% in the treatment group （including 15% of the cure rate and 62.6% of the marked relief rate）, and the total effective rate was 75% in the control group （including 12.5% of the marked relief rate）. There was a significant difference in the therapeutic effects （P〈0.01） between the two groups. It can be concluded that acupuncture-moxibustion is obviously superior to the routine drug therapy for treatment of multiple aortitis.

Treatment of Reflux Laryngopharyngitis with Modified Banxia Xiexin Tang （Pinellia Decoction for Draining the Heart） ——A Report of 40 Cases

To evaluate the effect of modified Banxia Xiexin Tang （半夏泻心汤 Pinellia Decoction for Draining the Heart） in treatment of laryngopharyngitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease （GERD）. Methods： Forty patients in the treatment group were treated with modified Pinellia Decoction for Draining the Heart and 38 patients in the control group were treated with Jinsang Liyan Wan （金嗓利咽丸 Pills for a Good Voice by Relieving Sore-Throat）o The effects were evaluated by the improvement in symptoms and the parameters obtained in a grading system of gastroscopy and laryngoscopy. Results and Conclusion： The comparison of therapeutic effects on complication of laryngopharyngitis, GERD symptoms, and findings in gastroscope grading and laryngoscope （P〈0.05 or P〈0.01） demonstrated that the modified Pinellia Decoction for Draining the Heart was much more effective in treating laryngopahryngitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux.
