This in vitro study compared the ultrastructural quality of the apical seal achieved with Resilon/Epiphany and gutta-percha/AH Plus. Single-rooted extracted human teeth were prepared using a crown-down technique, debrided with NaOCl and EDTA, and obturated with either Resilon/Epiphany or gutta-percha/AH Plus. They were examined for gaps along canal walls using SEM, and for apical leakage using a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM revealed both gap-free regions, and gap-containing regions in canals filled with both materials. TEM revealed the presence of silver deposits along the sealer-hybrid layer interface in Resilon/Epiphany, and between the sealer and gutta-percha in the controls. It is concluded that a complete hermetic apical seal cannot be achieved with either root filling materials.  相似文献

To evaluate the effectiveness of the ProTaper and Mtwo retreatment systems for removal of resin‐based obturation techniques during retreatment. A total of 160 maxillary anterior teeth were enlarged to size 30 using ProTaper and Mtwo rotary instruments. Teeth were randomly divided into eight groups. Resilon + Epiphany, gutta‐percha + Epiphany, gutta‐percha + AH Plus and gutta‐percha + Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer (PCS) combinations were used for obturation. ProTaper and Mtwo retreatment files were used for removal of root canal treatments. After clearing the roots, the teeth were split vertically into halves, and the cleanliness of the canal walls was determined by scanning electron microscopy. Specimens obturated with gutta‐percha and Kerr PCS displayed significantly more remnant obturation material than did specimens filled with resin‐based obturation materials. Teeth prepared with Mtwo instruments contained significantly more remnant filling material than did teeth prepared with ProTaper. ProTaper files were significantly faster than Mtwo instruments in terms of the mean time of retreatment and time required to reach working length. The Resilon + Epiphany and AH Plus + gutta‐percha obturation materials were removed more easily than were the Epiphany + gutta‐percha and Kerr PCS + gutta‐percha obturation materials. Although ProTaper retreatment files worked faster than did Mtwo retreatment files in terms of removing root canal obturation materials, both retreatment systems are effective, reliable and fast.  相似文献

Resilon/Epiphany obturation system is emerging as an alternative to gutta-percha (GP). The efficacy of retreatment techniques for Resilon removal has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate two commonly used retreatment techniques in the removal of Resilon. Sixty single-canal teeth were instrumented and obturated with either Resilon/Epiphany or GP/AH Plus. Each canal was randomly allocated to receive one of the two retreatment techniques-ProFile 0.06 rotary files combined with heat or chloroform. The time required to remove the obturation material was recorded and the cleanliness of canal walls was determined by stereomicroscope and electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that chloroform combined with rotary files was more efficient in material removal compared to heat (p < 0.05). Resilon was faster to remove than GP. Both techniques resulted in cleaner canal walls in the apical third of the teeth obturated with Resilon when compared to GP (p < 0.05).  相似文献

PURPOSE: To assess the apical sealing property of a new root canal filling material, Epiphany. METHODS: Seventy extracted maxillary and mandibular single-rooted teeth were used. They were randomly divided into three groups and obturated by lateral condensation with gutta-percha and AH 26/AH Plus sealers and Resilon core material and Epiphany sealer. Apical leakage was measured by the fluid-transport method. RESULTS: The differences in leakage among gutta-percha with AH 26, gutta-percha with AH Plus, and Resilon with Epiphany were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The teeth filled with gutta-percha/AH 26 displayed the most apical leakage. There were no differences between the Resilon/Epiphany and gutta-percha/AH Plus groups (P > 0.05).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of occlusal load on the integrity of root canal obturation. Maxillary anterior teeth were cleaned, shaped, and obturated with either gutta-percha (GP)/AH Plus or Resilon/Epiphany. Afterwards, teeth were placed under 100 N force at 2 Hz for 22 hours in a 37 degrees C water bath. Teeth were sectioned and examined for disruption in the integrity of the obturation by using optical microscopy. The length of the separation between the obturation and the root canal walls was measured and compared statistically. GP and Resilon obturated canals subjected to occlusal load displayed significantly greater interface disruption compared with unloaded controls (p < .05). The results indicate that occlusal load generates separation forces on the obturation interface that might compromise the sealing ability of the obturation.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the removability of canal fillings performed by using current methods during re-treatment with rotary instruments. Seventy-two freshly extracted human anterior teeth with single straight root canals were instrumented with Mtwo rotary files. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 obturation groups of 18 specimens each as follows: group 1, Resilon and Epiphany; group 2, GuttaFlow obturation system; group 3, EndoTwinn obturation system; group 4, gutta-percha with AH Plus sealer. The filled canals were re-treated by using Mtwo-Retreatment instruments and Mtwo instruments. The time required to remove the obturation material was recorded. After splitting the roots, the amount of residual filling material on the canal walls was imaged and measured with image analyzer software. Statistical analysis was accomplished by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests for the analysis of root canal cleanliness. There was no statistically significant difference among the 4 filling techniques regarding the amount of residual material in the apical, middle, and coronal thirds and inside the whole canal area (P > .05). Regarding the mean time of re-treatment, the fillings performed by using GuttaFlow and EndoTwinn methods were removed much more quickly compared with the other 2 methods (P < .001). It was observed that the fillings performed with the above canal filling methods were removed in a similar fashion with rotary instruments during re-treatment.  相似文献

The aim of this laboratory study was to compare the interfacial adaptation of an epoxy-resin and a self-etch sealer in mesial root canals of mandibular molars filled using the System-B/Elements Obturation Unit. Sixty mesial root canals of mandibular molars were prepared using the K3 rotary system up to 35.04 instrument and then filled with the aid of the System-B/Elements Obturation Unit using either gutta-percha/ThermaSeal Plus (n=15) or Resilon/Real Seal SE (n=15). The single cone technique using both materials was used as control. The sealers were stained with Rhodamine B dye and the teeth were filled and sectioned at 2, 4 and 6 mm from the apex. The interfacial marginal adaptation of sealers was evaluated using confocal microscopy. Statistical analyses were performed by the Kruskall-Wallis test (α=0.05). In general, microscopic analysis showed a quite regular gap distribution pattern at sealer-dentin interfaces, mainly for the two groups filled with Real Seal SE. This means that both nonbonding root-filling groups (ThermaSeal Plus) showed significantly higher amount of gap-free regions regardless of the filling technique (p<0.05). Better marginal adaptation was obtained with gutta-percha and epoxy resin-based sealer using either the system B or the single cone technique.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the apical sealing ability of Resilon obturation material. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Forty-two single rooted extracted human teeth were selected and randomly divided into three groups. They were obturated using lateral condensation with gutta-percha and AH 26/AH plus and Resilon; also, 12 root canals were used as control groups. The apical leakage was measured using the dye penetration methodology. RESULTS: The teeth filled with gutta-percha and AH 26 displayed the most apical leakage. The least apical leakage was shown with Resilon. DISCUSSION: The differences in leakage among the groups, gutta-percha with AH 26 (2.4 mm, SD:1.87), gutta-percha with AH plus (2.1 mm, SD: 1.69), and Resilon (1.7 mm, SD:1.32), were statistically significant (p< 0.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the data of this study, all groups produced a satisfactory seal. However, Resilon and Epiphany sealer showed the least apical leakage.  相似文献

This study compared the remaining filling material and working time when removing gutta-percha/AH 26 and Resilon/Epiphany from root filled extracted teeth. The root fillings were removed using chloroform and two different rotary systems (K3 and Liberator files). The amount of residual filling material on the canal walls was imaged and measured using image analyzer software. The group filled with Resilon/Epiphany and retreated with K3 files demonstrated the least residual filling material on the walls (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the gutta-percha/AH26 and Resilon/Epiphany groups when the Liberator files were used (p > 0.05). In the groups filled with Resilon/Epiphany, the filling was removed faster than groups filled with gutta-percha/AH 26 (p < 0.05). K3 rotary system was faster than Liberator to remove both gutta-percha and Resilon (p < 0.05). Resilon/Epiphany was effectively removed with K3 or Liberator rotary files.  相似文献

AIM: To compare the long-term apical sealing ability of gutta-percha/AH Plus and Resilon/Epiphany. METHODOLOGY: The root canals of 90 single-rooted human mandibular premolars with single narrow root canals were prepared with ProFile 0.4 taper instruments to apical size 40. After each instrument, the canals were irrigated with 1% sodium hypochlorite. Subsequently, the teeth were randomly divided into four groups containing 20 teeth each. Additionally, 10 prepared premolars served as positive and 10 counterparts with intact crowns as negative controls. The root canals were filled with gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Epiphany using lateral or vertical compaction. Specimens were allowed to set for 7 days at 37 degrees C and 100% humidity. Subsequently, the root fillings were removed down to the apical 4 mm. Fluid movement was then assessed using a fluid transportation model and re-evaluated after 16 months of water storage. Leakage within and between groups was compared using nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Negative controls revealed no fluid movement and positive controls displayed gross fluid movement at both times of observation. At the immediate measurement, there were no significant differences between the experimental groups (Kruskal-Wallis, P > 0.05). Gutta-percha/AH Plus fillings retained their seal after 16-months storage (Wilcoxon, P > 0.05), whilst the Resilon/Epiphany groups lost their sealing capacity (Wilcoxon, P < 0.001). In these groups, 29 of the 40 specimens exhibited gross leakage similar to positive controls. CONCLUSION: Initially, Resilon/Epiphany root fillings prevented fluid movement to the same degree as gutta-percha/AH Plus counterparts, but showed more fluid movement when tested at 16 months.  相似文献

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the sealing ability of Resilon/Epiphany to gutta-percha and Roth or AH Plus sealers. Leakage of the obturated roots was measured using the fluid filtration technique. There were eight groups of 12 teeth each. Group 1: obturated with Resilon/Epiphany; group 2: obturated with gutta-percha/Roth, allowed to set for 3 wk; group 3: obturated with gutta-percha/Roth; group 4: obturated with Resilon/Epiphany using a single cone; group 5: obturated with Resilon cones without using primer/sealer (positive control); group 6: obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus; group 7: same as group 6, but allowed to set for 8 h; and group 8: sealed on the outside with three layers of nail varnish (negative control). The results showed that only the positive control (group 5) leaked significantly more (p < 0.05) than the other groups. There was no effect of time on leakage. Resilon/Epiphany was no better than gutta-percha/Roth or gutta-percha/AH Plus at sealing root canals.  相似文献

The development and maintenance of the sealing of the root canal system is the key to the success of root canal treatment. The resin-based adhesive material has the potential to reduce the microleakage of the root canal because of its adhesive properties and penetration into dentinal walls. Moreover, the irrigation protocols may have an influence on the adhesiveness of resin-based sealers to root dentin.

Objective

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigant protocols on coronal bacterial microleakage of gutta-percha/AH Plus and Resilon/Real Seal Self-etch systems.

Material and Methods

One hundred ninety pre-molars were used. The teeth were divided into 18 experimental groups according to the irrigation protocols and filling materials used. The protocols used were: distilled water; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)+eDTA; NaOCl+H3PO4; NaOCl+eDTA+chlorhexidine (CHX); NaOCl+H3PO4+CHX; CHX+eDTA; CHX+ H3PO4; CHX+eDTA+CHX and CHX+H3PO4+CHX. Gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Real Seal Se were used as root-filling materials. The coronal microleakage was evaluated for 90 days against Enterococcus faecalis. Data were statistically analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival test, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests.

Results

No significant difference was verified in the groups using chlorhexidine or sodium hypochlorite during the chemo-mechanical preparation followed by eDTA or phosphoric acid for smear layer removal. The same results were found for filling materials. However, the statistical analyses revealed that a final flush with 2% chlorhexidine reduced significantly the coronal microleakage.

Conclusion

A final flush with 2% chlorhexidine after smear layer removal reduces coronal microleakage of teeth filled with gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Real Seal SE.  相似文献

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare leakage of Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 through root canals of single-rooted extracted human mandibular premolars filled with either gutta-percha/AH Plus or Resilon/Epiphany using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Test and control teeth were suspended in an experimental bacterial leakage setup for 50 days. Kaplan-Meyer curves showed a tendency of the gutta-percha/AH Plus root fillings to prevent leakage better than Resilon/Epiphany counterparts. This tendency, however, was not statistically significant (log-rank test, p = 0.141). The estimated mean time for turbidity to occur in the broth below the suspended root was 35 days (SD = 5 days) in the gutta-percha/AH Plus and 33 days (SD = 4 days) in the Resilon/Epiphany group. It was concluded that within the limitations of this study, there was no apparent advantage of using Resilon/Epiphany over gutta-percha/AH Plus.  相似文献

A polydimethylsiloxane-based sealer (GuttaFlow) was used for filling single-rooted teeth with four obturation techniques. Prefitted gutta-percha master-cones were employed in groups 1 to 3 with backfilling of the sealer. Apical third of the roots were first filled with GuttaFlow, and sealer-coated master cones were seated with up-and-down motion (group 1) or rotated to place (group 2). Master-cones were used as carriers for introducing GuttaFlow into the canals (group 3). Canals were filled with GuttaFlow without master-cones (group 4). Canals were filled with AH Plus/gutta-percha using warm vertical compaction (control group 5). All obturated canals were tested for leakage after 1, 6, and 12 weeks using the fluid filtration technique. All groups exhibited equivalent seal regardless of time except for more extensive leakage in group 3. The use of GuttaFlow with a single gutta-percha master cone creates an apical seal that is equivalent to that produced with gutta-percha/AH Plus sealer using warm vertical compaction.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the apical sealing ability of the new resin-based Epiphany-Resilon root canal filling system, and to compare this with the sealing abilities of different pairings of AH plus, gutta-percha, Epiphany, and Resilon. Seventy extracted human single-rooted teeth were used. All teeth were instrumented using a set of ProTaper rotary instruments. The canal spaces were filled with different combinations of core and sealer using lateral condensation, as follows: group 1, AH Plus + gutta-percha; group 2, AH Plus + Resilon; group 3, Epiphany + Resilon; group 4, Epiphany + gutta-percha. Apical leakage quantity was measured with the computerized fluid filtration meter. Statistical analysis indicated that Epiphany gutta-percha combination had the least amount of microleakage than all the other groups; AH Plus gutta-percha combination proved to have second least amount of microleakage among the groups. AH Plus-Resilon combination demonstrated the greatest amount of microleakage. There were a significant difference between Epiphany gutta-percha and AH Plus-Resilon combinations (p < 0.05). It was found that there were no significant differences between Epiphany-Resilon combination and all the other groups (p > 0.05).  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the micropush-out bond strength of Resilon to that of gutta-percha. Extracted human anterior teeth were used for evaluation. The crowns were removed and the root canals were instrumented with Gates Glidden drills and 0.06 Profile rotary files. Instrumentation was performed with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite irrigation and a final rinse of 17% EDTA. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups. Gutta-percha group: obturation with gutta-percha and Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer EWT. Resilon group: obturation with Resilon points, Epiphany Primer, and Root Canal Sealant. The teeth were cut perpendicular to their long axis to obtain a series of 1.0 mm thick disks (n = 15 per group). Micropush-out bond strengths to root canal dentin were measured. The results show that the mean bond strength to root canal dentin was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the Resilon/Epiphany group as compared to the gutta-percha/Kerr Pulp Canal Sealer EWT group.  相似文献

The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the active versus passive dye microleakage and apical sealing ability of laterally condensed gutta-percha/AH Plus versus Resilon/Epiphany. One hundred and twenty teeth were instrumented and divided into experimental, positive and negative control groups. In group 1, the teeth were obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus and in group 2 the teeth were obturated with Resilon/Epiphany. The apical seal was evaluated with a passive and active dye penetration test. Absorbance of the extracted dye was determined with a spectrophotometer. Resilon/Epiphany showed less dye penetration in comparison with the gutta-percha/AH Plus group (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between the passive and active dye penetration tests (P > 0.05). In this in vitro study, canals obturated with Resilon/Epiphany showed less apical leakage than those obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus, regardless of the type of dye penetration test used.  相似文献

By means of a double-chamber model, different root canal filling materials and procedures were compared. Briefly, the root canals of single-rooted human teeth, extracted for periodontal reasons, were instrumented and obturated by gutta-percha/Pulp Canal Sealer EWT (PCS) or by Resilon, in association with different sealers (Real Seal, RelyX Unicem or Meta). Obturation was achieved by traditional continuous wave of condensation technique (TCWCT), a modified version of it (MCWCT), or single cone technique (SCT). The obturated roots, inserted in a double-chamber model, were sterilized by gamma irradiation. Next, Enterococcus faecalis was added to the upper chamber and the specimens were incubated at 37 °C for up to 120 days; the development of turbidity in the lower chambers’ broths indicated bacterial leakage through the obturated root canals. The kinetics of leakage were analyzed in different groups by means of Kaplan–Meier statistics and compared by log-rank test. The results showed that root canals obturated with either gutta-percha/PCS using the MCWCT, Resilon/Real Seal SCT or Resilon/RelyX Unicem using the TCWCT displayed significantly better performance than the remaining groups (p < 0.01). Histological evaluation, performed to investigate microbial localization inside specimens, confirmed that this parameter varied according to the obturation procedures and materials employed. This ex vivo study indicates that gutta-percha/PCS, if used with the MCWCT, is as effective as Resilon when coupled to Real Seal with the SCT or, interestingly, to RelyX Unicem with the TCWCT. These data suggest that further improvement of the currently employed root canal filling procedures is achievable, depending on both the filling materials and the technique employed, thus encouraging clinical studies in this direction.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the sealing ability of ActiV GP/glass ionomer (GI) sealer (Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), Resilon/Epiphany (Pentron Clinical Technologies, Wallingford, CT), and gutta-percha (GP)/AH Plus (Dentsply Maillefer, Tulsa, OK). Seventy-three human single-rooted teeth were randomly divided into three test groups (20 canals each) and two control groups (5 positive and 8 negative). Using Enterococcus faecalis, a split-chamber bacterial leakage model was developed to evaluate the sealing ability of the three obturation systems. Samples were monitored every 24 hours for 65 days. Thirteen teeth leaked in both the Resilon/Epiphany and GP/AH Plus groups, whereas 17 teeth leaked in the ActiV GP/GI group at the end of the observation period. There were no statistically significant differences in the resistance to leakage between the three obturation systems (p > 0.05).  相似文献

The aim of the study was to measure percentage of volume of voids and gaps in root canals obturated with different obturation materials by using micro–computed tomography (micro-CT). Forty-eight single-rooted teeth were collected and decoronated, and root canals were prepared by using rotary files. The roots were randomly allocated into 4 groups, and each group was obturated by using cold lateral compaction with a different material (gutta-percha and TubliSeal sealer, EndoRez points and EndoRez sealer, RealSeal points and RealSeal sealer, and a gutta-percha point and GuttaFlow sealer). Roots were scanned with micro-CT, and volume measurements for voids and gaps in the obturated roots were carried out by using specialized CT software. Percentage of gaps and voids was calculated. Statistical analysis showed that gutta-percha exhibited an overall significantly lower percentage (1.02%) of voids and gaps. The present study showed that none of the root canal filled teeth were gap-free. Roots filled with gutta-percha showed less voids and gaps than roots filled with the remaining filling materials.  相似文献
