[Purpose] To explore the changes in heart-rate variability (HRV) of survivors of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) before, during, and after a Tai Chi (TC) Qigong exercise. [Subjects and Methods] Eleven survivors of NPC participated voluntarily in the study. The heart rate of each participant was measured continuously for 1 minute before the TC Qigong intervention, during the 5-minute TC Qigong intervention, and for 1 minute after the intervention, using a Polar heart-rate monitor. Spectral HRV was expressed in terms of normalised low frequency (LF) power, normalised high frequency (HF) power, and the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) power ratio. [Results] Both the LF-power and the HF-power components had significant time effects. However, the time effect of the LF/HF power ratio was not significant. Post hoc contrast analysis revealed a significant decrease in LF power and a concomitant increase in HF power during the 4th minute and 5th minute of the TC Qigong exercise. [Conclusion] Five minutes of TC Qigong exercise was found to improve HRV by increasing HF power and decreasing LF power, but these effects were transient. TC Qigong might be an appropriate exercise for improving the ANS function and psychological and cardiac health of survivors of NPC.Key words: Autonomic nervous system, Mind-body exercise, Head-and-neck cancer  相似文献

[Purpose] Medial knee osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, affects adults. The external knee adduction moment, a surrogate knee-loading measure, has clinical implications for knee osteoarthritis patients. Tai Chi is a promising intervention for pain alleviation in knee osteoarthritis; however, the characteristics of external knee adduction moment during Tai Chi have not been established. [Subjects and Methods] During normal and Tai Chi walking, a gait analysis was performed to compare the external knee adduction moment moment-arm characteristics and paired t-tests to compare moment-arm magnitudes. [Results] A significant difference was observed in the average lateral direction of moment-arm magnitude during Tai Chi walking (−0.0239 ± 0.011 m) compared to that during normal walking (−0.0057 ± 0.004 m). No significant difference was found between conditions in average medial direction of moment-arm magnitude (normal walking: 0.0143 ± 0.010 m; Tai Chi walking: 0.0098 ± 0.014 m). [Conclusion] Tai Chi walking produced a larger peak lateral moment-arm value than normal walking during the stance phase, whereas Tai Chi walking and normal walking peak medial moment-arm values were similar, suggesting that medial knee joint loading may be avoided during Tai Chi walking.Key words: Tai Chi gait, External knee adduction moment arm, Walking  相似文献

[Purpose] This study was to examine the effects of tai chi on low back pain in young males. [Subjects and Methods] Forty males in their 20s with low back pain were randomly assigned to two groups. Tai chi was applied to one group, and stretching was applied to the other group. The subjects conducted exercise for one hour, three times per week for four weeks. They performed warm-up exercises for 10 min at the beginning and end of the sessions and conducted the main exercise for 40 minutes. Wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) and a visual analogue scale (VAS) were employed to measure muscle activity and pain, respectively. [Results] There were significant differences between the two groups in pain and muscle activity. The tai chi group’s VAS decreased from 3.1 to 2.1, and its muscle activity decreased from 21.5% maximum voluntary isomeric contraction (MVIC) to 16.4% MVIC. The stretching group’s VAS decreased from 3.4 to 2.8, and its muscle activity decreased from 24.1% MVIC to 22.1% MVIC. [Conclusion] Tai chi is more effective for low back pain in males in their 20s than stretching. Tai chi can be considered an effective method to reduce low back pain in males in their 20s.Key words: Tai chi, SEMG  相似文献

Background and Aims: Increased oxidative stress in dialysis patients is thought to contribute to increased mortality; however, confirmatory data are scarce. We analyzed the serum concentration of 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative stress, in relation to mortality in hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.♦ Methods: Serum 8-OHdG, interleukin 6 (IL-6), other biochemical markers, Davies comorbidity score, and protein-energy wasting (PEW) were assessed in 303 prevalent patients treated with HD (n = 220; age: 63 ± 14 years) or PD (n = 83; age: 64 ± 14 years). Mortality was assessed after a median follow-up of 31 months.♦ Results: The median (25th – 75th percentile) concentration of 8-OHdG was higher in HD than in PD patients: 1.3 ng/mL (0.9 – 1.8 ng/mL) versus 0.5 ng/mL (0.4 – 0.6 ng/mL), p < 0.001. The HD modality (standard β = 0.57, p < 0.001) and dialysis vintage (standard β = 0.12, p = 0.02) were independent predictors of serum 8-OHdG in a multivariable linear regression model including age, sex, body mass index, dialysis modality (HD or PD), preceding time on dialysis (dialysis vintage), PEW, comorbidity score, IL-6, and use of angiotensin converting-enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers or statins. During follow-up, 107 patients died. In multivariable Cox regression models including all 303 patients and adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, dialysis modality, dialysis vintage, and comorbidity score, 8-OHdG was significantly associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio: 1.40; 95% confidence limits: 1.05, 1.87 for 1 standard deviation increase of 8-OHdG). In subgroup analyses according to dialysis modality, 8-OHdG was associated with mortality in HD patients but not in PD patients.♦ Conclusions: Oxidative stress as assessed by 8-OHdG is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in dialysis patients. This association was seen in HD patients, but no such association could be demonstrated for PD patients.  相似文献

African American race is an independent risk factor for enhanced oxidative stress and inflammation. We sought to examine whether oxidative‐stress and inflammatory markers that are typically measured in humans also differ by race in cell culture. We compared levels between African American and Caucasian young adults and then separately in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) from both races. We found heightened oxidative stress and inflammation in the African Americans both in vitro and in vivo. African American HUVECs showed higher nitric oxide (NO) levels (10.8 ± 0.4 vs. 8.8 ± 0.7 μmol/L/mg, p = 0.03), Interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) levels (61.7 ± 4.2 vs. 23.9 ± 9.0 pg/mg, p = 0.02), and lower superoxide dismutase activity (15.6 ± 3.3 vs. 25.4 ± 2.8 U/mg, p = 0.04), and also higher protein expression (p < 0.05) of NADPH oxidase subunit p47phox, isoforms NOX2 and NOX4, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS), inducible NOS, as well as IL‐6. African American adults had higher plasma protein carbonyls (1.1 ± 0.1 vs. 0.8 ± 0.1 nmol/mg, p = 0.01) and antioxidant capacity (2.3 ± 0.2 vs. 1.1 ± 0.3 mM, p = 0.01). These preliminary translational data demonstrate a racial difference in HUVECs much like that in humans, but should be interpreted with caution given its preliminary nature. It is known that racial differences exist in how humans respond to development and progression of disease, therefore these data suggest that ethnicity of cell model may be important to consider with in vitro clinical research. [Purpose] To assess the effects of Tai Chi on the renal and cardiac functions of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-one patients with CKD and CVD were randomly divided into control and exercise groups. The exercise group performed Tai Chi training for 30 minutes three to five times a week for 12 weeks, while the control group did not. All patients’ renal and cardiac functions and blood lipid parameters were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. [Results] The 12 weeks Tai Chi intervention improved the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and the high density lipoprotein (HDL) level, and decreased the serum creatintine (Scr) level, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and the total cholesterol (CH), triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. The change in eGFR correlated negatively with the changes in CH, TG and LDL, and positively with the change in HDL. In addition, the change in SBP correlated positively with the changes in CH, TG and LDL, and negatively with the change in HDL. [Conclusion] Tai Chi training might improve the renal and cardiac functions of CKD and CVD patients via improved regulation of lipid metabolism.Key words: Tai Chi, Renal function, Lipid metabolism  相似文献

[Purpose] To evaluate the oxidative stress parameters and urinary deoxypyridinoline levels in geriatric patients with osteoporosis. [Subjects and Methods] Eighty geriatric patients aged over 65 years were recruited. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=40) consisted of patients with osteoporosis, and Group 2 (n=40) consisted of patients without osteoporosis. Bone mineral density measurements were performed for all patients using DEXA. Oxidative stress parameters were analyzed in blood samples, and deoxypyridinoline levels were analyzed in 24-hour urinary samples. [Results] Compared to Group 2, the total antioxidant status and oxidative stress index levels of Group 1 were not significantly different; however, total oxidant status and 24-hour urinary deoxypyridinoline levels were significantly higher. Pearson correlation coefficients indicated that OSI and urinary deoxypyridinoline levels were not correlated with any biochemical parameters. ROC-curve analysis revealed that urinary deoxypyridinoline levels over 30.80 mg/ml predicted osteoporosis with 67% sensitivity and 68% specificity (area under the curve = 0.734; %95 CI: 0.624–0.844). [Conclusion] Our results indicate that oxidative stress would play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, and that urinary deoxypyridinoline levels may be a useful screening test for osteoporosis.Key words: Osteoporosis, Oxidative stress index, Deoxypyridinoline  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of aerobic exercise vs control (stretching/balance) on inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in stroke survivors and whether these changes are associated with improvements in physical and metabolic health.DesignRandomized controlled trial.SettingThe general communities of Baltimore, Maryland, and Atlanta, Georgia.ParticipantsTwo hundred forty-six older (>50 years), chronic (>6 months) survivors of stroke (N=246) with hemiparetic gait were recruited, with 51 completing pre-intervention testing and 39 completing postintervention testing. Participants were required to have completed all conventional physical therapy and be capable of walking 3 minutes on a treadmill (N=246).InterventionParticipants completed 6 months of 2 times/wk stretching or balance (ST; n=19) or 3 times/wk aerobic treadmill rehabilitation (TM; n=20;).Main Outcome Measure(s)Peak oxygen uptake rate (V?o2peak), 6-minute walking distance (6MWD), fasting plasma glucose, insulin, oxidative stress, and inflammatory biomarkers were assessed pre- and postintervention. Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated.ResultsPhysical function and metabolic health parameters tended to improve after TM but not ST (ST vs TM: V?o2peak: ?9% vs 24%, P<.01; 6MWD: 1% vs 15%, P=.05; insulin: ?1% vs ?31%, P=.05; HOMA-IR: ?3% vs ?29%, P=.06). Plasma concentrations of nitrotyrosine, protein carbonyls, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) tended to decrease from pre-intervention concentrations in response to TM compared to ST (ST vs TM: nitrotyrosine: 2% vs ?28%, P=.01; protein carbonyls: ?4% vs ?34%, P=.08; oxLDL: ?3% vs ?32%, P<.01). Changes in circulating concentrations of C-reactive protein, protein carbonyls, and oxLDL were negatively associated with changes in V?o2peak and 6MWD (r's=?0.40 to ?0.76) and positively associated with fasting plasma insulin and HOMA-IR (r's=0.52-0.81, Ps<.01).ConclusionsSix months of TM tends to be associated with increased functional capacity and reduced oxidative stress in chronic stroke survivors. Our findings identify potentially modifiable systemic markers of inflammation and oxidative stress important to stroke rehabilitation and provide potential targets for novel therapeutics in future studies.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE

Although oxidative stress (OxS) is thought to contribute to atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD), little is known about the variability in an individual’s ability to respond to OxS. Therefore, we assessed potential indices of response to OxS and evaluated whether they modify the association between OxS and CAD.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

We evaluated plasma α- and γ-tocopherol per unit cholesterol (potential response markers); urinary 15-isoprostane F2t per milligram creatinine (isoprostane [IsoP], a potential stress marker); and the α-tocopherol-to-IsoP ratio (as a measure of response to stress), measured three times during 20 years of follow-up, in relation to CAD incidence in a cohort with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes (n = 658; mean age at baseline, 28 years; duration of diabetes, 19 years). Participants with three samples (blood and either 24-h or overnight urine) available before the onset of CAD or the end of follow-up (n = 356) were selected for study.

RESULTS

In multivariable mixed models, α-tocopherol over time was inversely associated with CAD (β = −0.27; P = 0.02), whereas a direct association was observed for IsoP (β = 0.0008; P = 0.06). Moreover, the α-tocopherol-to-IsoP ratio was strongly and inversely related to CAD incidence (β = −0.72; P = 0.003), whereas in a separate model including α-tocopherol and IsoP, both biomarkers maintained statistical significance. No association was observed for γ-tocopherol (β = −0.22; P = 0.54).

CONCLUSIONS

These data suggest that a greater potential capability (α-tocopherol) to respond to OxS (urinary IsoP) relates to CAD incidence.Although the generation of reactive oxygen species is a natural and essential feature of human physiology, free radicals can also be cytotoxic, attacking and altering the structure and function of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, thereby compromising normal cellular function (1). To maintain normal cellular physiology, a balance is required between the pro- and antioxidant forces, while a relative excess production of free radicals, and the resulting oxidative stress (OxS), has been implicated in both the development as well as the progression of diabetes-associated complications (2). Unfortunately, the lack of sensitivity, specificity, or both in the methodologies commonly used to assess OxS in vivo, the requirement for invasive methods, and/or the influence of external factors on measurements obtained have prohibited definitive conclusions in human studies (3). Furthermore, little effort has been made to quantify response potentials (i.e., antioxidant defenses) relative to the stress encountered by individuals.Antioxidant vitamins comprise one of the defense mechanisms available to living systems to counteract the damaging effects of excess free radical production (4). However, despite early encouraging findings from prospective cohort studies, clinical trials of antioxidant supplementation for the prevention of cardiovascular disease have generally provided null results (5). Our own observation of a protective effect of plasma concentrations of α-tocopherol on the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) among individuals with type 1 diabetes also was puzzling because it seemed to be confined to those using antioxidant vitamin supplements but occurred at concentrations similar to those of nonsupplement users (6).More recent discoveries, such as the ability to measure isoprostanes, may help to better quantify the level of OxS and permit analyses related to antioxidative defenses in humans. Indeed, isoprostanes are currently considered the gold standard biomarker of OxS and lipid peroxidation in vivo (3) and may provide a better opportunity to evaluate this important lipid peroxidation pathway in the pathophysiology of vascular diseases. Thus, we aimed to revisit the OxS hypothesis to evaluate whether the degree to which an individual with type 1 diabetes is potentially able to respond to OxS (e.g., plasma levels of antioxidant vitamins) is associated with cardiovascular risk and whether this varies with levels of such stress (e.g., urinary isoprostanes).  相似文献

[Purpose] In this study, combined training with breathing resistance and sustained physical exertion was carried out to evaluate its physiological effects and its effect on improve endurance capacity. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects were nine healthy adults (mean age 20.4, SD ± 1.7 years). The combined training group (n = 5) carried out 6 weeks of combined training using a cycle ergometer, with exercise load tests and respiratory function tests performed before and after the training. The results of the training were compared to a control group (n = 4) that only performed the cycling exercise without the combined training with breathing resistance. [Results] In the combined training group, ventilatory threshold, maximal load of the cycle ergometer in exercise load tests, and maximal voluntary ventilation increased after training. These increases after training were all significant, but none of these variables changed significantly in the control group. [Conclusion] The results imply that in comparison to conventional training methods, combined training with breathing resistance and sustained physical exertion is beneficial for increasing endurance capacity and respiratory muscle function. This result provides important information regarding the effects of the new training method for improving endurance capacity.Key words: Respiratory muscle training, Exercise tolerance, Cardiorespiratory endurance  相似文献

[Purpose] The present study, was conducted to examine the occlusal force and physical, cognitive, and attentional functions of elderly females living in the community to evaluate the significance of measuring the occlusal force. [Subjects and Methods] The number of subjects was 104. The Occlusal Force Meter GM10 was used to measure their occlusal force. Their physical functions were assessed using eight examinations, including the 30-second Chair Stand Test, and the cognitive functions of the Mini-Mental State Examination and attention functions of the Trail Making Test. [Results] Significant correlations were noted between the occlusal force and all measurements, except for the results of forward bending in a sitting position. Multiple regression analysis was conducted with the occlusal force as an objective variable, and significant partial correlations were noted with the 30-second Chair Stand Test. [Conclusion] These results suggest that it is necessary to provide the elderly with comprehensive support focusing on maintaining their occlusal force, as a nursing care-prevention measure, to help them continue to live a healthy, independent life.  相似文献

IntroductionBreast cancer survivors (BCSs) often report fatigue that persists for years following treatment. Despite a growing body of evidence for meditative movement practices to improve symptoms among BCSs, few studies have explored using Qigong/Tai Chi to reduce fatigue. Additionally, few have examined the biological mechanisms through which fatigue may be reduced using Qigong/Tai Chi.Methods/study designWe will recruit 250 fatigued, post-menopausal women diagnosed with breast cancer (stage 0-III), between 6 months and 5 years past primary treatment and randomize to a standardized Qigong/Tai Chi Easy (QG/TCE) intervention, a “sham” Qigong group (movements without a focus on the breath and meditative state) (SQG), or an educational support (ES) group. The primary outcome (fatigue), secondary outcomes (anxiety, depression, sleep quality, cognitive function, physical activity), and a biomarker of HPA axis dysregulation (diurnal cortisol) will be assessed at baseline, post-intervention and 6 months postintervention, and biomarkers of inflammation (IL1ra, IL6, TNFα and INFᵧ) at pre/post-intervention. We hypothesize that QG/TCE will reduce fatigue (and improve other symptoms associated with fatigue) in BCSs experiencing persistent cancer-related fatigue more than SQG and ES. Biomarkers will be examined for relationships to changes in fatigue.ConclusionsFindings from this study may reveal the effects of the unique mind-body aspects of QG/TCE on fatigue in BCSs with a complex design that separates the effects of low-intensity physical activity (SQG) and social support/attention (ES) from the primary intervention. Further, results will likely contribute greater understanding of the biological mechanisms of these practices related to improved symptoms among BCSs.  相似文献

Background

Recurrent urinary tract infections are important in children and adults with diabetes mellitus and/or incontinence due to risk of pyelonephritis (PYN) and renal damage. There is a positive correlation released free radicals during PYN and renal damage. Experimental studies showed that antioxidant agents improve renal damage when used immediately after bacterial inoculation.

Objective

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether treatment by thymoquinone (TQ) before or during Escherichia coli inoculation prevents oxidative damage in acute pyelonephritis (PYN) in an ascending obstructive rat model.

Methods

In this study, 42 Wistar rats were grouped as follows: control, PYN (24, 48, and 72 hours), and TQ-PYN (24, 48, and 72 hours). E. coli (1 ×109 colony forming units) was inoculated into the bladder via urethral catheterization in both the PYN and TQ groups. TQ injections were performed 24 hours before bacteria inoculation and repeated at 24-hour intervals during the indicated time at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally in TQ groups.

Results

Superoxide dismutase activity was statistically lower in the TQ-PYN-48 and -72 groups than the PYN-48 and -72 groups (P < 0.001, P = 0.004, respectively). Catalase activity was significantly higher in PYN-24, -48, and -72 groups than the control group (P < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant difference between the TQ-PYN-24, -48, and -72 groups and PYN groups in terms of glutathione peroxidase activity (P < 0.001, P = 0.026, P = 0.046, respectively). When the TQ-PYN-72 group was compared with the PYN-72 group, malondialdehyde levels were significantly lower in the TQ-PYN-72 group than in the PYN-72 group (P = 0.033). A histologic examination also confirmed the protective effect of TQ. In statistical analysis of histopathologic findings, there were significant differences between the PYN-24 and TQ-PYN-24, PYN-48 and TQ-PYN-48, and PYN-72 and TQ-PYN-72 groups (P = 0.008, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively).

Conclusions

The results indicate that TQ administration attenuated the oxidative damage that occurred in PYN and, therefore, could be used as a supportive agent to protect the kidneys from oxidative damage caused by PYN.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe purpose of our study was to evaluate the effect of manually assisted lumbar spinal manipulation therapy on tactile allodynia, peripheral nerve functional recovery, and oxidative markers in rats exposed to knee immobilization-inducing hypersensitivity.MethodsTactile allodynia and sciatic, tibial, and peroneal functional indices were assessed before the knee joint immobilization, 24 hours after the knee cast removal, and 24 hours after 3 weeks of lumbar therapy with the Activator Adjusting Instrument, model 4 (AAI 4). Subsequently, the blood was collected from each rat, and oxidative markers such as lipid hydroperoxide levels; nitric oxide metabolites; and superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities were assessed.ResultsThe AAI 4 improved the immobilization-induced allodynia and recovered the peripheral nerve functional indices impaired after knee immobilization. Immobilized rats treated with AAI 4 therapy presented a lack of significant changes in lipid hydroperoxides and nitric oxide metabolites in the plasma contrasting with rats that were kept freely in their cages, with no therapy applied, which presented elevated lipid hydroperoxides levels. Also, the antioxidant catalase enzymatic activity decreased in the blood of rats immobilized and treated with AAI 4.ConclusionThese results suggest that manually assisted lumbar spinal manipulation therapy modulates systemic oxidative stress, which possibly contributes to the analgesia and recovery of peripheral nerve functionality.  相似文献

A permeable cell technique was used to measure the alterations in synthesis of DNA and poly-(adenosine diphosphoribose) in normal human lymphocytes after treatment of the cells with different types of DNA-damaging agents. The lymphocytes showed an abrupt increase in the unscheduled synthesis of DNA and poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) in response to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The increases were apparent within 1 h and reached a maximum between 2 and 4 h after irradiation. The magnitude of the increases in DNA and poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) synthesis was dependent upon the UV dose. Alkaline CsCl gradient studies, with bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate density labeling of DNA, demonstrated that the unscheduled DNA synthesis, which occurred in response to UV irradiation, was actually a result of the repair mode of DNA synthesis. Similar increases in DNA synthesis, and poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) synthesis occurred when lymphocytes were treated with several other DNA-damaging agents, including bleomycin, N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine or N-acetoxyacetyl aminofluorene. Treatment of lymphocytes with DNase, under conditions which allowed degradation of cellular DNA, also resulted in increased synthesis of poly(adenosine diphosphoribose). Cycloheximide did not inhibit the increase in synthesis of DNA or poly(adenosine diphosphoribose) that occurred in response to treatment with the DNA-damaging agents.  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the activation of the tibialis anterior (TA) and soleus (SOL) muscles during the sit-to-stand (STS) task with hip adduction and hip abduction in elderly females. [Subjects] We recruited 16 healthy elderly females with no pain in the knee joint and no other orthopedic problems of the lower limbs. [Methods] The activities of the dominant lower extremity muscles were measured using a wireless electromyography (EMG) system. Subjects then performed a total of nine STS trials, including three trials each for hip adduction, hip abduction, and natural STS tasks. [Results] In the pre- thigh-off (TO) phase, the normalized EMG data of the TA muscle increased significantly when the STS task was performed with hip adduction compared with hip abduction. In the post-TO phase, the normalized EMG data of the TA muscle showed a significant increase during the STS task with hip adduction compared with hip abduction. Additionally, the normalized EMG data of the SOL muscle increased significantly when the STS task was performed with hip adduction compared with hip abduction. [Conclusion] Therefore, the STS movement with hip adduction poses a greater challenge for balance control, indicating that certain elderly individuals would have difficulty in executing an abrupt adjustment in their dynamic postural stability during the STS movement.Key words: Sit-to-stand, Hip adduction, Hip abduction  相似文献

[Purpose] To investigate the effect of Tai Chi on cognitive and physical function in the elderly. [Subjects and Methods] A randomized trial design was used. A total 150 subjects were enrolled and were divided into Tai Chi and control groups. Subjects in the Tai Chi group participated Tai Chi for 6 months, and subjects in the control group participated in other non-athletic activities. [Results] There were no differences between the groups in the one leg standing time with eyes open, left grip strength, or the Frontal Assessment Battery at bedside after 3 and 6 months of intervention. The Mini-Mental State Examination scores after 3 and 6 months were higher in the Tai Chi group than in the control group. The right grip strength after 3 months increased more in the Tai Chi group than in the control group. Both the 5-m high walking speed and 10-m normal walking speed were significantly lower after 3 and 6 months of Tai Chi practice. [Conclusion] These results suggest that regular Tai Chi practice may improve cognitive and physical function in the elderly.Key words: Tai Chi, Mobility, Cognition  相似文献

Chest physical therapy techniques are essential in order to reduce the frequency of recurrent pulmonary infections that progressively affect lung function in cystic fibrosis patients. Recently, ELTGOL (L’Expiration Lente Totale Glotte Ouverte en décubitus Latéral) emerged as an inexpensive and easy to perform therapeutic option. The aim of this study was to compare the acute effects of ELTGOL and the Flutter valve in stable adult patients with cystic fibrosis. [Subjects and Methods] This was a randomized, crossover study with a sample of cystic fibrosis outpatients. The subjects underwent two protocols (Flutter Valve and ELTGOL interventions, referred to as ELTGOL and FLUTTER) in a randomized order with a one-week washout interval between them. The main outcomes were pulmonary function variables and expectorated sputum dry weight. [Results] ELTGOL cleared 0.34 g more of secretions than FLUTTER (95% CI 0.11 to 0.57). When comparing the physiological effects of ELTGOL and FLUTTER, the first was superior in improving airway resistance (−0.51 cmH2O/L/s; 95% CI −0.88 to −0.14) and airway conductance (0.016 L/s/cmH2O; 95% CI 0.008 to 0.023). [Conclusion] ELTGOL promoted higher secretion removal and improvement in airway resistance and conductance than the Flutter valve. These techniques were equivalent in reducing the pulmonary hyperinflation and air trapping in cystic fibrosis patients.Key words: Chest physiotherapy, Cystic fibrosis, ELTGOL  相似文献
