Objectives:To calculate the seroprevalence of asymptomatic healthcare workers (HCWs) in our institution. Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional study among asymptomatic HCWs in a large hospital during the peak of the pandemic (from July to August 2020 and followed them up until February 2021) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We collected the data in a Microsoft Word document after collecting a single serum sample for detection of antibodies from each participant then we compared the results statically in Microsoft Excel tables. Results:We enrolled 188 participants and measured their IgG antibodies from venous blood samples using CLIA. Six (3.2%) had positive antibodies despite being asymptomatic. Most of these were from non-COVID-19 working areas (4 out of 6), but all had an exposure with a positive COVID-19 patient at some point in the preceding 2 months. Conclusions:Our results are consistent with similar local studies showing low seroprevalence among HCWs while most positive cases are from non-COVID-19 areas. Despite this low seroprevalence, HCWs are still considered a high-risk group; hence, there is a need to encourage strict implementation and adherence to infection control measures and vaccination among HCWs, especially when these measures are relaxed on the national level. 相似文献

Objectives:To investigate the prevalence and determinants of burnout syndrome and depression among medical students at Unaizah College of Medicine (UCM), Qassim University, Qassim, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).Methods:A cross-sectional study of all Saudi medical students studying at UCM, Qassim University, Al Qassim, KSA, between February to March 2020.Results:Of the total 305 students sampled, 153 (50.2%) fit the category of depression. Concerning burnout, only 5.6% of the total population met the Maslach Burnout Inventory diagnostic criteria for burnout, with those determined to have burnout having ranked high on the emotional exhaustion and cynicism subscales, and low on the academic efficacy subscale. Male was strongly associated with burnout, while female gender and raising children were strongly associated with the presence of depression. Emotional exhaustion and high cynicism as determinants of burnout elevate the risk of depression. Conclusion:Our results highlight the high rate of depression and burnout, as well as the need for psychological intervention programs at medical schools to prevent the deterioration of student’s mental health that has been associated with advancement in medical school. 相似文献

Objectives:To estimate the prevalence of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) among diabetic patients and to investigate GERD’s potential association with diabetic complications, and patients’ sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Methods:This cross-sectional study used the GERD questionnaire (GerdQ) in 403 diabetic patients attending the outpatient clinics at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University Medical City, King Saud University; a tertiary hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between January and February 2019. On the basis of a cutoff GerdQ score of 8, we distinguished GERD and non-GERD groups.Results:Gastro-esophageal reflux disease prevalence was 44.9%. Of the diabetic patients with GERD, 76.8% were female (p<0.001). Gastro-esophageal reflux disease patients were older (mean age: 55.27, p=0.038) and had a slightly higher body mass index (BMI) than non-GERD (32.04 versus, 30.20 p=0.006), respectively. Smokers in the GERD group were 1.7% versus 7.2% in the non-GERD group (p=0.007). Peripheral numbness (p=0.023) and nephropathy (p=0.041) were more prevalent in patients with GERD, while myocardial infarction was more prevalent in non-GERD subjects (p=0.038). On multi variable analysis, the only independent GERD risk factors were female gender (p=0.013) and age >65 years (p=0.007).Conclusion:Gastro-esophageal reflux disease prevalence in diabetic patients was 45%. Diabetic patients with GERD were more often female and older >65 years. None of the other tested factors (BMI, smoking status, diabetes mellitus duration, therapeutic plan, or diabetic complications) showed significant difference between GERD and non-GERD groups. 相似文献

ABSTRACTObjectives:To investigate the incidence and predictors of traumatic pneumothorax using data from a Level-I trauma center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods:This is a retrospective chart-review study carried out in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data were extracted from the hospital’s trauma registry (2016-2018). A total of 2,109 trauma patients were included. Inclusion criteria were patients ≥16 years old admitted for a traumatic injury. Variables included patient demographics, transport mode, trauma team activation, mechanism of injury, mortality rate, Glasgow Coma Scale and Injury Severity Scores. A logistic regression analysis was constructed to evaluate potential predictors of pneumothorax. Results:Of 2,109 patients included from the trauma registry, 236 (11.2%) were diagnosed with pneumothorax. The majority of the study population was young (19-49 years) (60.7%) and male (79.4%.) Injury mechanism was significantly associated with the presence of pneumothorax (p<0.001). Regression analysis indicated that the odds of having pneumothorax among intentional injury victims was 15 times higher than fall injury victims (OR=15.3, 95% CI= 7.2-32.9). Participants who sustained motor vehicle collision injuries had 3 times higher odds of developing pneumothorax than those who suffered fall injuries (OR=3.1, 95% CI= 1.5-6.1).Conclusion:The incidence of traumatic pneumothorax is sizable and highly associated with the mechanism of injury. Efforts to reduce motor vehicle collision burden should be directly associated with decreasing the burden of traumatic pneumothorax. 相似文献

Objectives:To evaluate age and gender differences in the prevalence of chronic diseases and to calculate atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk scores in adults aged 30-75 years in Riyadh city, Saudi Arabia. Methods:This cross-sectional, interview-based study was conducted with 2997 men and women, visiting primary health care centers in Riyadh, during the years 2015 to 2016. Serum glycosylated hemoglobin and lipid levels were measured by ion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography and fully automated analyzer using enzymatic methods, respectively. The 10-year and lifetime ASCVD risk scores were calculated using an online calculator. Results:The mean age of men was 43.1 (±11.7) and women was 43.8 (± 10.9) years. Prevalence rates of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity in men versus women were 20.3% versus 24.8% (p=0.006), 15% versus 19.5% (p=0.003), 50.7% versus 53.4% (p=0.16), and 41.2% versus 56.7% (p<0.001), respectively. Majority of men and women with chronic diseases belonged to the age groups 30-39 and 50-59 years, respectively. High 10-year ASCVD risk was found in 32% men and 7.6% women, whereas lifetime risk was present in 67% and 51%, respectively. Conclusion:Women in the age group 50-59 years, with multiple risk factors are at a greater risk of developing cardiovascular diseases than men of same age. Young adults were at more risk for lifetime ASCVD, whereas the 10-year ASCVD risk increased with increasing age. 相似文献

Objectives:To quantify the prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea, study its associated factors, and to assess its effect on the quality of life of female medical students. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted among 376 female medical students at King Saud University student campus and King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between September 2017 and May 2018. The study was conducted using a consecutive, non-random sampling technique. Results:The prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea among female medical students was 80.1%; most of the participants (n=134) reported moderate pain (49.8%). Primary dysmenorrhea was significantly associated with caffeine consumption (p<0.05) and did not show an association with factors, body mass index, diet, lack of physical activity, and smoking. Among the SF-36 domains, the 4 domains physical health (p<0.001) and emotional health (p=0.01) including health changes (p=0.033) and pain (p<0.001) were statistically significantly affected by dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea also had a significant impact on the students’ academic performance where a higher proportion of students suffering from primary dysmenorrhea showed negative effects on their attendance, concentration, study time, and participation in class. Conclusion:Most female medical students suffer from primary dysmenorrhea, which adversely affects their quality of life and academic performance. Caffeine consumption demonstrated a significant association with primary dysmenorrhea. Periodical awareness programs to minimize the consequences of primary dysmenorrhea should be introduced. 相似文献

Objectives:To determine the prevalence and characterize prostate cancer (PC) cases in Aseer, Saudi Arabia. Methods:This study involved 883 patients who consulted physicians in Aseer Central Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia, for prostate issues between the years 2008-2018. All patients underwent digital rectal examination and measurement of their serum prostate-specific antigen levels. For patients who presented abnormal digital rectal examination findings and elevated prostate-specific antigen levels, prostate biopsies were recommended. Specimens were histopathologically examined to differentiate between malignant and benign tumors. Results:Among the 883 included patients, 132 (15%) underwent a prostate biopsy and were found to have a tumor. Histopathological examination confirmed malignancy (PC) in 77 (8.7%) patients. The absolute majority of the patients diagnosed with PC (96%) were aged >60 years and almost all of them (92%) were found to have a high prostate-specific antigen level of >4 ng/ml.Conclusion:Prostate cancer appears to be a serious disease in Aseer, Saudi Arabia. Further studies aimed at determining the causes of this type of cancer and understanding its mechanisms are warranted. 相似文献

Objectives:To document the clinicopathological features of primary renal lymphoma (PRL) at 2 tertiary hospitals in the western region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods:Data were retrieved from all PRLs that were diagnosed at King Abdulaziz University Hospital and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between January 2002 and April 2022. Histopathological and immunohistochemical slides were reviewed, and additional immunohistochemistry stains were carried out in selected cases. Follow-up data were also collected. Results:There were 17 identified cases of PRL. The age of the patients ranged from 4-76 years (median: 50.5 years and mean: 46.8 years), 11 (64.7%) were males, and 6 (35.3%) were females. There were 12 cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 3 cases of Burkitt’s lymphoma, and 2 cases of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. The median follow-up duration was 22 months. The one-year overall survival rate was 71% and the 2-year overall survival rate was 43% during follow-up.Conclusion:Primary renal lymphomas in Saudi patients are more common in males and seen in a relatively younger age group compared to the available worldwide data. The diagnosis of PRL is important to avoid tumor dissemination and unnecessary nephrectomy. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common pathological type and non-germinal center B-cell is the most common subtype. 相似文献

Objectives:To translate, validate, and adapt the diabetes distress scale (DDS)-17 to a Saudi Arabian (SA) DDS (SADDS-17). Also, to evaluate the psychometric properties of the newly adapted SADDS-17.Methods:This was a cross-sectional study evaluating the psychometric properties of the DDS. The DDS was translated using the forward-backward translation from English to Arabic at King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in January 2016. Statistical analyses included exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency, testretest reliability, and construct validity. Moreover, contingent validity was evaluated using hospital anxiety and depression scale, visual analogue scale, and the World Health Organization quality of life assessment instrument. Results:A total of 109 participants were included in this study. The exploratory factor analysis of our Arabic scale supported the original DDS with 4 sub-scales. Correlations ranged from 0.376 to 0.718 for items in regimen-related distress, 0.327 to 0.533 for items in emotional burden, 0.413 to 0.722 for items in physician-related distress, and 0.492 to 0.556 for items in interpersonal distress. The Cronbach’s alpha value of the SADDS was 0.848 for the total scale. The test-retest reliability value was 0.78.Conclusion:Our SADDS is a valid and reliable instrument for detecting diabetes distress among Saudi Arabian patients with type 2 diabetes. 相似文献

Objectives:To investigate the clinical profiles and outcomes of young adults presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).Methods:We retrospectively reviewed King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, registry between January 2016 and November 2017 for all patients younger than 45 years old who were admitted with STEMI. We compared this study population to a control group of patients aged 45 years and older who were enrolled in the same period. Results:In total, 402 patients were enrolled; 197 were younger than 45 years. The incidence of newly diagnosed dyslipidemia was higher in younger patients (44% vs. 32%, p=0.01). Smoking was significantly more prevalent in the younger group (52% vs. 35%, p=0.001). The prevalence of pulmonary edema and cardiogenic shock on presentation was significantly higher in the older group (3% vs. 10; odds ratio, 4.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.750-10.94; p=0.002). Hospital stay was also longer in the older group (4±2 vs. 5±2 days, p=0.03).Conclusion:ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in young patients has a favorable outcome. Smoking and dyslipidemia are the main risk factors for STEMI in young individuals. The majority of young patients with dyslipidemia were not aware of their pre-existing condition. Our findings recommend local adaptation and implementation of screening programs for dyslipidemia in the young and the reinforcement of smoking prevention programs. 相似文献

Objectives:To assess the quality and quantity of Saudi publications in oncology over a 10-year period. Methods:A systematic PubMed search was conducted between January 2008 and December 2017 to retrieve all Saudi oncology publications. Data about the articles was collected. The level of evidence (LOE) was independently assessed by 2 authors. Two 5-year periods (2008-2012 and 2013-2017) were compared using the relevant parameters. Clinicaltrials.gov was also searched for all oncology trials registered in Saudi Arabia. Results:A total of 839 publications met our inclusion criteria. The most common type of research was case series, totaling 32% of all publications. Clinical trials formed less than 2% of the total. The LOE was I, II, III, and IV in 0.3%, 2.1%, 58.4%, and 39.3% of the included publications, respectively. The LOE was the same in the 2 periods. There were more publications in international journals (p=0.004), more international collaborations (p=0.001), and higher journal impact factors (p=0.037) in 2013-2017 than in 2008-2012. Only 76 registered clinical trials were found in the Clinicaltrials.gov registry. Conclusion:Despite an increase in the number of Saudi publications in the field of oncology over time, the LOE did not change. There were, however, some improvements in the international collaboration and journal impact factor, as well as an increase in the number of studies published in international journals. These observations call for a national strategy to improve oncology research in Saudi Arabia. 相似文献

Objectives:To compare the clinicopathological, histological and immunohistochemical features of breast cancer (BC) in between young (≤40 years) and older (>40 years) patients. Methods:This retrospective study included histopathological reports of all patients with primary BC diagnose at the King Fahad Hospital, Madinah, Saudi Arabia between January 2006 and November 2020.Results:During the study period, a total of 708 patients with BC were identified; 173 cases (24.4%) were ≤40 years old and 535 (75.6%) were above 40 years. There were significant differences in tumor size (p=0.046), tumor grade (p<0.0001), tumor stage (p=0.047), lymphovascular invasion (p<0.0001), and distant metastasis (p<0.0001) between the 2 groups. Comparing the status of the hormone receptors and molecular subtypes between the 2 age groups, BCs in the younger patients were triple–negative (p=0.008) in majority of the cases and less likely to be estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) hormone receptors–positive (p=0.0001, p<0.0001). Young patients exhibited the HER2/neu type with more frequent statistical significance (p=0.016) and the tumor type luminal A (p=0.002) with less frequent statistical significance compared to old patients. Conclusion:Although BC in young women is uncommon, it may be different with regards to poor prognostic outcomes, which are attributed to more aggressive histopathological features and less favorable receptor status when compared to the cases diagnosed in older women. 相似文献

Objectives:To examine the awareness level of COVID-19 and to highlight the frequency of myths and misconceptions among Saudi Arabia’s population. Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional study from June 13 to 20, 2020 by distributing a 16-item online Google forms questionnaire among adults (18-65 years old) living in Saudi Arabia. We utilized the convenience sampling. Data analysis was performed using Chi-square and multiple regression analysis on Jamovi. Results:A total of 1436 responses were analyzed with 43.5% males and 56.5% females. Most respondents (89.1%) thought that only the elderly above 60 years old are considered at high risk of contracting COVID-19. Most respondents (86.5%) agreed that people with other health conditions could be more affected by COVID-19. Approximately 97.2% agreed that wearing a mask and avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands was the leading preventive action. Most participants (99.4%) chose fever as an associated symptom. Respondents from the healthcare sector presented statistically higher scores than those in non-healthcare sectors (p<0.001). Higher education and higher salary were important predictors of better COVID-19 knowledge. Conclusion:Public health officials need to increase awareness measures on COVID-19 to limit myths and misconceptions and reduce psychological distress associated with it. 相似文献
