The present paper aims to compare the microstructural and mechanical properties of CK45 carbon steel plates, joined by friction stir (FSW) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding methods. Besides visual inspection, the welded joints and the base material were subsequently evaluated in respect of optical microstructures, hardness and tensile properties. Sound joints could be accomplished using both the FSW and TIG welding methods through proper selection of process parameters and the filler metal. The influence of a water-cooling system on the FSW and various filler metals on the quality of TIG welding were further assessed. Both the FS welded sample as well as TIG welded samples with two different filler metals ER70S-6 and ER80S-B2 exhibited brittle behavior that could be mitigated through optimized water cooling and use of R60 filler metal. A drastic reduction of brittle martensite phase constituent in the microstructure corroborated significant improvements in mechanical properties of the welded zones for both the FSW sample as well as TIG welded samples with R60 filler metal.  相似文献

Magnesium alloys are attractive for the production of lightweight parts in modern automobile and aerospace industries due to their advanced properties. Their mechanical properties are usually enhanced by the incorporation with reinforcement particles. In the current study, reinforced AZ31 magnesium alloy was fabricated through the addition of bulk Al and the incorporation of SiC nanoparticles using a stir casting process to obtain AZ31-SiC nanocomposites. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigations revealed the formation of Mg17Al12 lamellar intermetallic structures and SiC clusters in the nanocomposites. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detected the uniform distribution of SiC nanoparticles in the AZ31-SiC nanocomposites. Enhancements in hardness and yield strength (YS) were detected in the fabricated nanocomposites. This behavior was referred to a joint strengthening mechanisms which showed matrix-reinforcement coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and elastic modulus mismatches, Orowan strengthening, and load transfer mechanism. The mechanical properties and wear resistance were gradually increased with an increase in SiC content in the nanocomposite. The maximum values were obtained from nanocomposites containing 1 wt% of SiC (AZ31-1SiC). AZ31-1SiC nanocomposite YS and hardness were improved by 27% and 30%, respectively, compared to AZ31 alloy. This nanocomposite also exhibited the highest wear resistance; its wear mass loss and depth of the worn surface decreased by 26% and 15%, respectively, compared to AZ31 alloy.  相似文献

Aluminum is a widely popular material due to its low cost, low weight, good formability and capability to be machined easily. When a non-metal such as ceramic is added to aluminum alloy, it forms a composite. Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) are emerging as alternatives to conventional metals due to their ability to withstand heavy load, excellent resistance to corrosion and wear, and comparatively high hardness and toughness. Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMCs), the most popular category in MMCs, have innumerable applications in various fields such as scientific research, structural, automobile, marine, aerospace, domestic and construction. Their attractive properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio, high hardness, high impact strength and superior tribological behavior enable them to be used in automobile components, aviation structures and parts of ships. Thus, in this research work an attempt has been made to fabricate Aluminum Alloys and Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMCs) using the popular synthesis technique called stir casting and join them by friction stir welding (FSW). Dissimilar grades of aluminum alloy, i.e., Al 6061 and Al 1100, are used for the experimental work. Alumina and Silicon Carbide are used as reinforcement with the aluminum matrix. Mechanical and corrosion properties are experimentally evaluated. The FSW process is analyzed by experimentally comparing the welded alloys and welded composites. Finally, the best suitable FSW combination is selected with the help of a Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM)-based numerical optimization technique called Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS).  相似文献

The feasibility of producing welding joints between 6061-T6 aluminum and pure copper sheets of 6 mm thickness by conventional friction stir welding (CFSW) and bobbin tool friction stir welding (BTFSW) by using a slot-groove configuration at the joining surface was investigated. The microstructure of the welded samples was examined by using an optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the weld samples are compared based on the results of the tensile test, hardness measurement, and fractography test. The slot-groove configuration resulted in the presence of a bulk-sized Al block on the Cu side. The microscopic observations revealed the dispersion of fine Cu particles in the stir zone. The presence of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) CuAl2, which are hard and brittle, lowered the strength of the weld joints. The strength of the weld joints produced with BTFSW was superior to that of the C-FSW. The maximum hardness values of 214 HV and 211 HV are reported at the stir zone for BTFSW and CFSW, respectively. The fracture location of all the joints was at the intersection of the stir zone and the thermomechanically affected zone was on the Cu side.  相似文献

This work investigates the feasibility of using friction stir welding (FSW) process as a groove filling welding technique to weld duplex stainless steel (DSS) that is extensively used by petroleum service companies and marine industries. For the FSW experiments, three different groove geometries without root gap were designed and machined in a DSS plates 6.5 mm thick. FSW were carried out to produce butt-joints at a constant tool rotation rate of 300 rpm, traverse welding speed of 25 mm/min, and tilt angle of 3o using tungsten carbide (WC) tool. For comparison, the same DSS plates were welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The produced joints were evaluated and characterized using radiographic inspection, optical microscopy, and hardness and tensile testing. Electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) was used to examine the grain structure and phases before and after FSW. The initial results indicate that FSW were used successfully to weld DSS joints with different groove designs with defect-free joints produced using the 60° V-shape groove with a 2 mm root face without root gap. This friction stir welded (FSWed) joint was further investigated and compared with the GTAW joint. The FSWed joint microstructure mainly consists of α and γ with significant grain refining; the GTWA weld contains different austenitic-phase (γ) morphologies such as grain boundary austenite (GBA), intragranular austenite precipitates (IGA), and Widmanstätten austenite (WA) besides the ferrite phase (α) in the weld zone (WZ) due to the used high heat input and 2209 filler rod. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the FSWed joint are enhanced over the GTAW weldment by 21%, 41%, and 66% and over the BM by 65%, 33%, and 54%, respectively. EBSD investigation showed a significant grain refining after FSW with grain size average of 1.88 µm for austenite and 2.2 µm for ferrite.  相似文献

This article investigates the flow of materials and weld formation during underwater friction stir welding (UFSW) of low carbon steel. A thermo-mechanical model is used to understand the relation between frictional heat phenomena during the welding and weld properties. To better understand the effects of the water environment, the simulation and experimental results were compared with the sample prepared by the traditional friction stir welding (FSW) method. Simulation results from surface heat diffusion indicate a smaller preheated area in front of the FSW tool declined the total generated heat in the UFSWed case compared to the FSWed sample. The simulation results revealed that the strain rate of steel in the stir zone (SZ) of the FSWed joint is higher than in the UFSWed case. The microstructure of the welded sample shows that SZ’s microstructure at the UFSWed case is more refined than the FSWed case due to the higher cooling rate of the water environment. Due to obtained results, the maximum temperatures of FSWed and UFSWed cases were 1228 °C and 1008 °C. Meanwhile, the simulation results show 1200 °C and 970 °C for conventional and underwater FSW samples, respectively. The maximum material velocity in SZ predicted 0.40 m/s and 0.32 m/s for FSW and underwater FSWed samples. The better condition in the UFSW case caused the ultimate tensile strength of welded sample to increase ~20% compared to the FSW joint.  相似文献

Friction stir welding (FSW) as a solid-state process is an excellent candidate for high softening temperature materials welding; however, extending the tool life is required to make the process cost-effective. This work investigates the use of a high pin to shoulder ratio (65%) tungsten carbide (WC) tool for friction stir welding of 5 mm thick 2205 DSS to extend the tool life of this low-cost tool material. In addition, the effect of FSW parameters in terms of rotational rates, travel speeds, and downward forces on the microstructural features and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated. Characterization in terms of visual inspection, macro and microstructures, hardness, and tensile testing was conducted. The obtained results indicated that the combined rotational rate, travel speed, and downward force parameters govern the production of defect-free joints. The 2205 DSS friction stir welds show an enhancement in hardness compared to the base material. The stir zone showed a significantly refined grain structure of ferrite and austenite with the reduction in the average grain size from 8.8 µm and 13.3 µm for the base material to 2.71 µm and 2.24 µm, respectively. Moreover, this joint showed higher yield strength and ultimate tensile strength compared to the DSS as-received material.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effect of two parameters of process type and tool offset on tensile, microhardness, and microstructure properties of AA6061-T6 aluminum alloy joints. Three methods of Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Advancing Parallel-Friction Stir Welding (AP-FSW), and Retreating Parallel-Friction Stir Welding (RP-FSW) were used. In addition, four modes of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm of tool offset were used in two welding passes in AP-FSW and RP-FSW processes. Based on the results, it was found that the mechanical properties of welded specimens with AP-FSW and RP-FSW techniques experience significant increments compared to FSW specimens. The best mechanical and microstructural properties were observed in the samples welded by RP-FSW, AP-FSW, and FSW methods, respectively. Welded specimens with the RP-FSW technique had better mechanical properties than other specimens due to the concentration of material flow in the weld nugget and proper microstructure refinement. In both AP-FSW and RP-FSW processes, by increasing the tool offset to 1.5 mm, joint efficiency increased significantly. The highest weld strength was found for welded specimens by RP-FSW and AP-FSW processes with a 1.5 mm tool offset. The peak sample of the RP-FSW process (1.5 mm offset) had the closest mechanical properties to the base metal, in which the Yield Stress (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation percentage (E%) were 76.4%, 86.5%, and 70% of base metal, respectively. In the welding area, RP-FSW specimens had smaller average grain size and higher hardness values than AP-FSW specimens.  相似文献

A lightweight, highly corrosive resistant, and high-strength wrought alloy in the aluminum family is the Aluminium 8006 alloy. The AA8006 alloy can be formed, welded, and adhesively bonded. However, the recommended welding methods such as laser, TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas welding), and ultrasonic are more costly. This investigation aims to reduce the cost of welding without compromising joint quality by means of friction stir welding. The aluminum alloy-friendly reinforcement agent zirconia is utilized as particles during the weld to improve the performance of the newly identified material AA8006 alloy in friction stir welding (FSW). The objectives of this research are to identify the level of process parameters for the friction stir welding of AA8006 to reduce the variability by the trial-and-error experimental method, thereby reducing the number of samples needing to be characterized to optimize the process parameters. To enhance the quality of the weld, the friction stir processing concept will be adapted with zirconia reinforcement during welding. The friction stir-processed samples were investigated regarding their mechanical properties such as tensile strength and Vickers microhardness. The welded samples were included in the corrosion testing to ensure that no foreign corrosive elements were included during the welding. The quality of the weld was investigated in terms of its surface morphology, including aspects such as the dispersion of reinforced particles on the welded area, the incorporation of foreign elements during the weld, micro defects or damage, and other notable changes through scanning electron microscopy analysis. The process of 3D profilometry was employed to perform optical microscopy investigation on the specimens inspected to ensure their surface quality and finish. Based on the outcomes, the optimal process parameters are suggested. Future directions for further investigation are highlighted.  相似文献

The B4C/C(graphite) composites were fabricated by employing a pressureless sintering process. The pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites exhibited extremely low mechanical characteristics. The liquid silicon infiltration technique was employed for enhancing the mechanical property of B4C/C(graphite) composites. Since the porosity of the B4C/C(graphite) composites was about 25–38%, the liquid silicon was able to infiltrate into the interior composites, thereby reacting with B4C and graphite to generate silicon carbide. Thus, boron carbide, silicon carbide, and residual silicon were sintered together forming B4C-SiC-Si composites. The pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites were transformed into the B4C-SiC-Si composites following the silicon infiltration process. This work comprises an investigation of the microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical characteristics of the pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites and B4C-SiC-Si composites. The XRD data demonstrated that the pressureless sintered bulks were composed of the B4C phase and graphite phase. The pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites exhibited a porous microstructure, an extremely low mechanical property, and low wear resistance. The XRD data of the B4C-SiC-Si specimens showed that silicon infiltrated specimens comprised a B4C phase, SiC phase, and residual Si. The B4C-SiC-Si composites manifested a compact and homogenous microstructure. The mechanical property of the B4C-SiC-Si composites was substantially enhanced in comparison to the pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites. The density, relative density, fracture strength, fracture toughness, elastic modulus, and Vickers hardness of the B4C-SiC-Si composites were notably enhanced as compared to the pressureless sintered B4C/C(graphite) composites. The B4C-SiC-Si composites also manifested outstanding resistance to wear as a consequence of silicon infiltration. The B4C-SiC-Si composites demonstrated excellent wear resistance and superior mechanical characteristics.  相似文献

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is one of the important variants of the friction stir welding (FSW) process. FSSW has been developed mainly for automotive applications where the different thickness sheets spot welding is essential. In the present work, different thin thickness sheets (1 mm and 2 mm) of AA6082-T6 were welded using FSSW at a constant dwell time of 3 s and different rotation speeds of 400, 600, 800, and 1000 rpm. The FSSW heat input was calculated, and the temperature cycle experience during the FSSW process was recorded. Both starting materials and produced FSSW joints were investigated by macro- and microstructural investigation, a hardness test, and a tensile shear test, and the fractured surfaces were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The macro examination showed that defect-free spot joints were produced at a wide range of rotation speeds (400–1000 rpm). The microstructural results in terms of grain refining of the stir zone (SZ) of the joints show good support for the mechanical properties of FSSW joints. It was found that the best welding condition was 600 rpm for achieving different thin sheet thicknesses spot joints with the SZ hardness of 95 ± 2 HV0.5 and a tensile shear load of 4300 ± 30 N.  相似文献

Applications of non-ferrous light metal alloys are especially popular in the field of aerospace. Hence it is important to investigate their properties in joining processes such as welding. Solid state joining process such as friction stir welding (FSW) is quite efficient for joining non-ferrous alloys, but with thick plates, challenges increase. In this study, Mg alloy plates of thickness 11.5 mm were successfully welded via single-pass FSW. Due to the dynamic recrystallization, grain size in the stir zone was reduced to 16 µm which is ≈15 times smaller than the parent material. The optimized rotational speed and traverse speed for optimum weld integrity were found to be 710 rpm and 100 mm/min, respectively. A sound weld with 98.96% joint efficiency, having an Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 161.8 MPa and elongation of 27.83%, was accomplished. Microhardness of the nugget was increased by 14.3%.  相似文献

The present paper aims to analyze the influence of process parameters (tool traverse speed and tool rotational speed) on the macrostructure, microhardness, and mechanical properties of dissimilar friction stir welded (FSW) butt joints. Nine combinations of FSW parameters welded joints of aluminum alloys 7020-T651 and 5083-H111 were characterized. Plates in 5 mm thickness were welded using the FSW method as dissimilar joints with three values of tool rotation parameters (400, 800, and 1200 rpm) and three welding speeds (100, 200, 300 mm/min). The macroscopic observations revealed various shapes of the stir zone and defects resulting from excess and insufficient heat input. Microfractographic analysis and tensile test results showed that the samples made with the FSW parameters of 800 rpm and 200 mm/min had the best strength properties: UTS = 303 MPa, YS = 157 MPa, and A = 11.6 %. Moreover, for all welds at welding speed 100 mm/min, the joint efficiency reached 95%.  相似文献

In recent decades, extensive research has been performed on the friction stir welding of flat-shaped materials while pipe welding, particularly polymer pipes, still encounters challenging issues. This work presents a feasible route for joining high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes using an orbital friction stir welding (OFSW) set-up properly designed with a retractable pin tool. Fully consolidated joints were achieved using a portable heating-assisted OFSW system suited for on-site pipeline welding. The obtained joined pipes were characterized by a high-quality weld surface and a lack of defects arising from the tool-pin hole. The samples welded with the optimum parameters presented comparable properties with the base materials and even a slight increase in the tensile strength. The highest tensile and impact strengths were 14.4 MPa and 2.45 kJ/m2, respectively, which is 105% and 89% of those of the base material. XRD, FTIR, and SEM were also applied to assess the property changes in the HDPE pipes after the FSW process. The morphological analysis evidenced that the crystalline structure of the welded sample was similar to that of the base material, proving the effectiveness of the proposed technology.  相似文献

In recent years, many alloys as well as composites of aluminium were developed for enhanced material performance. AA 6061 is an aluminium alloy that has extensive applications due to its superior material characteristics. It is a popular choice of matrix for aluminium matrix composite (AMC) fabrication. This study provides a review on AA 6061 aluminium alloy matrix composites produced through the stir-casting process. It focusses on conventional stir-casting fabrication, process parameters, various reinforcements used, and the mechanical properties of the AA 6061 composites. Several research studies indicated that the stir-casting method is widely used and suitable for fabricating AA 6061 composites with reinforcements such as SiC, B4C, Al2O3, TiC, as well as other inorganic, organic, hybrid, and nanomaterials. The majority of the studies showed that an increase in the reinforcement content enhanced the mechanical and tribological properties of the composites. Furthermore, hybrid composites showed better material properties than single reinforcement composites. The usage of industrial and agricultural residues in hybrid composites is also reported. Future studies could focus on the fabrication of AA 6061 nanocomposites through stir casting and their material characterisation, since they have great potential as advanced materials.  相似文献

Friction stir welding (FSW) and friction stir processing (FSP) are two of the most widely used solid-state welding techniques for magnesium (Mg) and magnesium alloys. Mg-based alloys are widely used in the railway, aerospace, nuclear, and marine industries, among others. Their primary advantage is their high strength-to-weight ratio and usefulness as a structural material. Due to their properties, it is difficult to weld using traditional gas- or electric-based processes; however, FSW and FSP work very well for Mg and its alloys. Recently, extensive studies have been carried out on FSW and FSP of Mg-based alloys. This paper reviews the context of future areas and existing constraints for FSW/FSP. In addition, in this review article, in connection with the FSW and FSP of Mg alloys, research advancement; the influencing parameters and their influence on weld characteristics; applications; and evolution related to the microstructure, substructure, texture and phase formations as well as mechanical properties were considered. The mechanisms underlying the joining and grain refinement during FSW/FSP of Mg alloys-based alloys are discussed. Moreover, this review paper can provide valuable and vital information regarding the FSW and FSP of these alloys for different sectors of relevant industries.  相似文献

In the present study, the microstructures and properties of DSS 2205 solid wire MIG welded samples prepared in different shielding gases (pure Ar gas, 98%Ar + 2%O2 and 98%Ar + 2%N2) were investigated for improving the weldability of DSS 2205 welded joint. The work was conducted by mechanical property tests (hardness and tensile test) and corrosion resistance property tests (immersion and electrochemical tests). The results show that adding 2%O2 into pure Ar gas as the shielding gas decreases crystal defects (faults) and improves the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the welded joints. Phase equilibrium and microstructural homogeneity in welded seam (WS) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) can be adjusted and the strength and corrosion resistance of welded joints increased obviously by adding 2%N2 to pure Ar gas as the shielding gas. Compared with DSS 2205 solid wire MIG welding in 98%Ar + 2%O2 mixed atmosphere, the strength and corrosion resistance of welded joints are improved more obviously in 98%Ar + 2%N2 mixed atmosphere.  相似文献

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process; i.e., no melting occurs. The welding process is promoted by the rotation and translation of an axis-symmetric non-consumable tool along the weld centerline. Thus, the FSW process is performed at much lower temperatures than conventional fusion welding, nevertheless it has some disadvantages. Laser Assisted Friction Stir Welding (LAFSW) is a combination in which the FSW is the dominant welding process and the laser pre-heats the weld. In this work FSW and LAFSW tests were conducted on 6 mm thick 5754H111 aluminum alloy plates in butt joint configuration. LAFSW is studied firstly to demonstrate the weldability of aluminum alloy using that technique. Secondly, process parameters, such as laser power and temperature gradient are investigated in order to evaluate changes in microstructure, micro-hardness, residual stress, and tensile properties. Once the possibility to achieve sound weld using LAFSW is demonstrated, it will be possible to explore the benefits for tool wear, higher welding speeds, and lower clamping force.  相似文献

The 5083 and 6061(T6) aluminum (Al) alloys are widely used in transportation industries and the development of structural designs because of their high toughness and high corrosion resistance. Friction stir welding (FSW) was performed to produce the dissimilar welded joint of Al5083-Al 6061(T6) under different welding parameters. However, softening behavior occurred in the friction stir welded (FSWed) samples because of grain coarsening or the dissolution of precipitation-hardening phases in the welding zone. Consequently, this research intended to investigate the effect of the post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) method on the mechanical property improvement of the dissimilar FSWed Al5083-Al6061(T6) and governing abnormal grain growth (AGG) through different welding parameters. The results showed PWHT enhanced the mechanical properties of dissimilar joints of Al5083-Al6061(T6). AGG was obtained in the microstructure of PWHTed joints, but appropriate PWHT could recover the dissolved precipitation-hardening particle in the heat-affected zone of the as-welded joint. Further, the tensile strength of the dissimilar joint increased from 181 MPa in the as-welded joint to 270 MPa in the PWHTed joint, showing 93% welding efficacy.  相似文献

To improve the loose structure and serious porosity of (Al–Zn–Mg–Cu) 7075 aluminum alloy laser-welded joints, aging treatment, double-sided ultrasonic impact treatment (DSUIT), and a combination of aging and DSUIT (A–DSUIT) were used to treat joints. In this experiment, the mechanism of A–DSUIT on the microstructure and properties of welded joints was analyzed. The microstructure of the welded joints was observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The hardness and tensile properties of the welded components under the different processes were examined via Vickers hardness test and a universal tensile testing machine. The results showed that, after the aging treatment, the dendritic structure of the welded joints transformed into an equiaxed crystal structure. Moreover, the residual tensile stress generated in the welding process was weakened, and the hardness and tensile strength were significantly improved. After DSUIT, a plastic deformation layer of a certain thickness was generated from the surface downward, and the residual compressive stress was introduced to a certain depth of the joint. However, the weld zone unaffected by DSUIT still exhibited residual tensile stress. The inner microhardness of the joint surface improved; the impact surface hardness was the largest and gradually decreased inward to the weld zone base metal hardness, with a small improvement in the tensile strength. Compared with the single treatment process, the microstructural and mechanical properties of the welded joint after A–DSUIT were comprehensively improved. The microhardness and tensile strength of the welded joint reached 200 HV and 615 MPa, respectively, for an increase of 45.8% and 61.8%, respectively. Observation of the fractures of the tensile specimens under the different treatment processes showed that the fractures before the aging treatment were mainly ductile fractures while those after were mainly brittle fractures. After DSUIT of the welded joints, a clear and dense plastic deformation layer was observed in the fracture of the tensile specimens and effectively improved the tensile properties of the welded joints. Under the EBSD characterization, the larger the residual compressive stress near the ultrasonic impact surface, the smaller the grain diameter and misorientation angle, and the lower the texture strength. Finally, after A–DSUIT, the hardness and tensile properties improved the most.  相似文献
