Eye Model for Inspecting the Image Quality of IOLs

Purpose:To inspect and compare the image quality of an aspheric intraocular lens(IQ,Alcon)with those of conventional monofocal silicone and acrylic intraocular lens and multifocal intraocular lens(Array).Methods:The IOLs were tested in the eye model,which was designed to be optically equivalent to the theoretical eye model.The eye model is a combination of a spherical photographic lens with 35 mm focal length(IOL put in a water cell)and a charge coupled device(CCD)camera.The images constructed by the lenses are observed on a monitor of personal computer and the contrasts of the images are analyzed by using commercial image processing software.SHARP value is used to measure and estimate image definition.Results:The images constructed by changing the diameter of aperture stop and IOL.Observed by this eye model,the image definition of aspheric intraocular lens(IQ,Alcon)is better than others.Discussion:The proposed eye model is useful for testing functional vision and for inspecting the differences of intraocular lens.

“Eye injuries” by the Byzantine writer Aetios Amidinos

The authors give a short report of the Injuries of the Eye by the Byzantine writer Aetios Amidinos.He wrote 16 medical books, among them The 7th Logos, including Eye Diseases. In all his writings, there is a substantial resort to ancient medical literature, mainly to the books of Galen. He describes the Eye Injuries in 5 chapters with remarkable critical ability and suitable treatment.Thus he is acknowledged as one of the most cultured and productive writers of that period.     

Paediatric Eye Services: How Much of the Workload Is Amblyopia-Related?

Aims: The proportion of patients seen by the paediatric eye service that attend for reasons related to amblyopia has not been quantified. The purpose of this study was to quantify the proportion of patients seen in the paediatric eye service attending for reasons related to amblyopia.

Methods: Records of all eye appointments of children attending the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and St Mary’s Hospital Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust over one month in 2009 were examined to determine the diagnosis and reason for attendance.

Results: Seven hundred and four patients had appointments booked at St Mary’s and Hillingdon in March 2009. The fail-to-attend rates were not significantly different at the 2 sites (19% at St Mary’s and 9% at Hillingdon; P=0.75). Of the 704 patients, 533 (St Mary’s, 252 [75%]; Hillingdon, 281 [76%]) were attending for amblyopia-related reasons. Of the overall 982 booked appointments, 770 (79%) were amblyopia-related.

Conclusions: Amblyopia diagnosis and management is clearly the most common cause of attendance to the paediatric eye service, accounting for over three-quarters of outpatient visits.     

Analysis of the serological testing results from Aier Eye Bank北大核心CSCD

Objective: This study was to evaluate the safety of 640 corneal donors by analysing the serological testing results. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the serological testing results from Changsha Aier Eye Bank and Chengdu Kangqiao Aier Eye Bank from January 2011 to December 2015, hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis C virus (HCV), treponema pallidum (TP) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were detected by colloidal gold or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: There were 83 out of 640 serum samples showed positive immuno-reaction assayed markers, the positive rate was 12.97%, including HBsAg(n=60, 9.38%), HCV(n=3, 0.47%), TP(n=11, 1.72%) and HIV(n=2, 0.31%). Moreover, 3 corneal donors were both positive against HBsAg and HCV, 2 donors positive against HCV and TP, 1 donor positive against HBsAg and HIV, 1 donor positive against HBsAg and TP. Conclusions: There is a high proportion of positive results of blood-borne diseases in cornea donors, which is a potential threat to corneal receptors and eye bank workers. Therefore, it is very important to detect serological test strictly for corneal donors. Copyright © 2018 by the Chinese Medical Association.
