ObjectiveTo examine pre-attentive acoustic change detection in schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations via mismatch negativity (MMN) extracted from a multi-feature paradigm.MethodsThis study examined the electroencephalograph (EEG)-derived MMN, recorded across 32 sites, in 12 hallucinating patients (HPs) with schizophrenia, 12 non-hallucinating patients (NPs) with schizophrenia and 12 healthy controls (HCs). MMN was recorded in response to a multi-feature MMN paradigm [Näätänen, R., et al., 2004. The mismatch negativity (MMN): towards the optimal paradigm. Clin. Neurophys. 115, 140–144] which employs frequency, duration, intensity, location and gap deviants. Differences in source localization were probed using standardized low resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA).ResultsHPs showed significantly smaller MMNs to duration deviants compared to HCs and NPs, as well as smaller MMNs to intensity deviants compared to HCs. Regionalized differences between HCs and each of the patient groups were observed in response to frequency deviants. There were no significant group effects for location or gap deviants, or for MMN latency. Source localization using sLORETA showed no significant differences in MMN generator location across groups for any of the deviant stimuli.ConclusionsThe often-reported robust MMN deficit to duration deviants may be specific to schizophrenia patients afflicted with auditory hallucinations. Furthermore, by using symptom-specific groups, novel deficits of pre-attentive auditory processing, such as that observed to intensity deviants in HPs, may be revealed.SignificanceThe differential responding observed between both groups of patients with schizophrenia has implications for automatic processing within the auditory cortex of hallucinating patients and suggests that care must be taken when recruiting participants in studies involving schizophrenia to ensure consistent, replicable results.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe recent fast multi-feature mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigms rest on the assumption that the deviant stimuli, alternating with the standard tone, strengthen the memory trace of the standard in respect to those attributes they have in common. In the present study, we tested whether the MMN can be recorded even without the standard stimulus, with the invariant properties of the deviant stimuli serving as a standard against which to detect the sound changes.MethodsMMN was recorded for changes in sound duration, frequency, intensity, location, gap, brightness, density, and noise level in a new multi-feature paradigm where no standard stimuli were used. In addition, these MMNs were compared with those recorded in the conventional multi-feature paradigm.ResultsAll sound changes elicited significant MMN responses that were highly similar between paradigms.ConclusionsThe MMN can be recorded even without the standard stimulus, as an accurate memory trace is constructed for the invariant features of the auditory input.SignificanceOmitting the standard stimuli results in almost 50% shorter recording time and the larger selection of deviant types with the newly introduced brightness, density, and noise-level changes provides even more information on the individual perceptual profiles than conventional multi-feature paradigms.  相似文献

ObjectiveA linguistic multi-feature mismatch negativity (MMN) paradigm with five types of changes (vowel, vowel-duration, consonant, frequency (F0), and intensity) in Finnish syllables was used to determine speech-sound discrimination in 17 normally-developing 6-year-old children. The MMNs for vowel and vowel-duration were also recorded in an oddball condition in order to compare the two paradigms. Similar MMNs in the two paradigms would suggest that they tap the same processes. This would promote the usefulness of the more time-efficient multi-feature paradigm for future studies in children.MethodsMMNs to five deviant types were recorded in the multi-feature paradigm in which these deviants (total of 50%) were presented in an alternating fashion with standards (50%). An oddball condition with vowel and vowel-duration deviants served as a control.ResultsThe linguistic multi-feature paradigm elicited significant MMN responses to all changes used and the responses were comparable to the ones recorded with the traditional oddball paradigm. Compared to a previous adult study (Pakarinen S, Lovio R, Huotilainen M, Alku P, Näätänen R, Kujala T. Fast multi-feature paradigm for recording several mismatch negativities (MMNs) to phonetic and acoustic changes in speech sounds. Biol Psychol, submitted for publication), the MMN amplitudes seemed to be smaller and of longer latencies in general in children than in adults.ConclusionsThe new time-efficient paradigm can be used in studies addressing cortical speech-sound discrimination in young children.SignificanceThe multi-feature paradigm enables fast (20 min) recording of MMNs for five speech-sound features. Objective

Music perception with a cochlear implant (CI) can be unsatisfactory because current-day implants are primarily designed to enable speech discrimination. The present study aimed at evaluating electrophysiological correlates of musical sound perception in CI users to help achieve the long-term goal of improved restoration of hearing in those individuals.

Methods

Auditory discrimination accuracy in adult CI users (n = 12) and matched normal-hearing controls (n = 12) was measured by behavioral discrimination tasks and mismatch negativity (MMN) recordings. Discrimination profiles were obtained by using a set of clarinet sounds (original/vocoded) varying along different acoustic dimensions (frequency/intensity/duration) and deviation magnitudes (four levels).

Results

Behavioral results and MMN recordings revealed reduced auditory discrimination accuracy in CI users. An inverse relationship was found between MMN amplitudes and duration of profound deafness.

Conclusions

CI users have difficulties in discriminating small changes in the acoustic properties of musical sounds. The recently developed multi-feature MMN paradigm (Pakarinen et al., 2007) can be used to objectively evaluate discrimination abilities of CI users for musical sounds.

Significance

Measuring auditory discrimination functions by means of a multi-feature MMN paradigm could be of substantial clinical value by providing a comprehensive profile of the extent of restored hearing in CI users.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the ERP characteristics and ERP indices of central speech sound encoding and discrimination in young children.Methods: Auditory sensory event-related potentials (ERPs) and the ERP index of auditory sensory discrimination (the mismatch negativity, MMN) were elicited by vowel stimuli in 3-year-old children. In an oddball paradigm, the standard stimulus was vowel /a/, one deviant stimulus was vowel /o/ (the across-category change), and the other was nasalized vowel /a/ (within-category change). In addition, the ERP changes occurring during the 14 min uninterrupted recording were examined.Results: As indexed by the sensory P1, N2, and N4 peaks, the 3-year-old children's transient neural encoding of vowels was comparable to that earlier registered in 1-year-old children but also showed vowel-specific characteristics observed in school-age children. The 3-year-old's MMN was comparable in amplitude to the school-age children's MMN and appeared to be sensitive to the across-category aspects of vowel changes. However, its latency was longer in the 3-year-olds than in school-age children. Among the sensory ERPs, only the N4 peak showed significant diminution during the experiment. The across-category change MMN diminished after 10 min of the recording, however, over the frontal areas only.Conclusions: In the 3-year-old children, the sensory processing of vowels exhibited transitional characteristics between those observed in infants and school-age children. The auditory sensory discrimination in the 3-year-olds appeared to be sensitive to the phonemic aspects of stimulus change. The frontally-predominant MMN diminution during the experiment might indicate the greater refractoriness of its frontal-lobe generators. In general, the auditory sensory ERPs show distinct maturational profiles from that of the MMN.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The event-related potential known as mismatch negativity (MMN) is elicited whenever the auditory system detects a change against an invariant background of stimulation. A reduction in mismatch negativity is well established in schizophrenia. The present study explored the association between reduced duration mismatch negativity in schizophrenia and behavioural measures of temporal discrimination. METHOD: Mismatch negativity amplitude to duration increments (125 vs. 50 ms) was compared between individuals with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Mismatch negativity amplitude was also related to two behavioural measures of temporal discrimination (silent and filled intervals) for detecting changes in stimuli of similar duration. RESULTS: Patients produced higher discrimination threshold estimates and smaller amplitude mismatch negativity responses to temporally deviant stimuli. Temporal discrimination thresholds correlated with the amplitude of the phase reversal in mismatch negativity at the left mastoid such that patients who produced the highest thresholds produced the smallest mismatch response. CONCLUSIONS: Imprecise representations of the temporal properties of auditory stimuli can account for some of the reduction in mismatch negativity amplitude in some patients but additional factors clearly contribute. The results suggest that patients who do and do not exhibit temporal processing deficits on behavioural tasks produce different patterns of reduction in duration mismatch negativity.  相似文献

ObjectiveAsperger syndrome, belonging to the autistic spectrum of disorders, involves deficits in social interaction and prosodic use of language but normal development of formal language abilities. Auditory processing involves both hyper- and hypoactive reactivity to acoustic changes.MethodsResponses composed of mismatch negativity (MMN) and obligatory components were recorded for five types of deviations in syllables (vowel, vowel duration, consonant, syllable frequency, syllable intensity) with the multi-feature paradigm from 8–12-year old children with Asperger syndrome.ResultsChildren with Asperger syndrome had larger MMNs for intensity and smaller MMNs for frequency changes than typically developing children, whereas no MMN group differences were found for the other deviant stimuli. Furthermore, children with Asperger syndrome performed more poorly than controls in Comprehension of Instructions subtest of a language test battery.ConclusionsCortical speech-sound discrimination is aberrant in children with Asperger syndrome. This is evident both as hypersensitive and depressed neural reactions to speech-sound changes, and is associated with features (frequency, intensity) which are relevant for prosodic processing.SignificanceThe multi-feature MMN paradigm, which includes variation and thereby resembles natural speech hearing circumstances, suggests abnormal pattern of speech discrimination in Asperger syndrome, including both hypo- and hypersensitive responses for speech features.  相似文献

ObjectiveLong-term outcomes of early implanted, young adult cochlear implant (CI) users remain variable. We measured auditory discrimination by means of event-related potentials in this population to examine whether variability at the level of cortical auditory processing helps to explain speech abilities.MethodsUsing an auditory oddball paradigm, the P300 and Mismatch Negativity (MMN) were measured in 8 young adult CI users and 14 normal-hearing peers. We related P300 amplitude and latency to clinical speech perception scores in quiet and to duration of deafness.ResultsAll individuals showed P300 responses. The MMN response was less robust in both groups. There was no evidence for differences in P300 responses between CI users and controls. P300 amplitude was associated with speech perception scores (r = 0.70, p = .05) and duration of deafness (r = −0.83, p = .009).ConclusionsEarly CI implantation yields good auditory processing outcomes at young adult age and, in contrast to MMN, the P300 provides a robust measure for auditory processing on an individual level.SignificanceAt the cortical level, early implanted, long-term CI users have good auditory discrimination, leaving variability in implantation outcomes unexplained. This group provides unique insight into the long-term neurophysiological underpinnings of early implantation.  相似文献

Several different negative potentials elicited in auditory perceptual tasks make spatially and temporally overlapping contributions to the scalp-recorded event-related potential. Frequent non-target tones in a 2-stimulus oddball pitch discrimination task, when compared with the same stimuli in ignore or simple reaction time conditions, elicit a negative deflection with two peaks (NA1 and NA2) differing in their latency and topography from the exogenous N92-P156 deflections. Oddball tones, when compared with the frequent ones, elicit mismatch negativity (MMN) in both ignore and discrimination conditions; MMN displays a frontocentral-posterolateral polarity inversion. In the discrimination condition, MMN is followed by N2 and P3b; the former has a more central amplitude maximum than MMN, and no posterolateral polarity inversion. When the pitch discrimination task was made more difficult, there was no effect on NA1 or NA2, but the latency of MMN, N2, P3b, and reaction time all increased in parallel. It is hypothesized that MMN reflects the outcome of an automatic mismatch detection process, and that the subsequent processing of targets is related to the event of mismatch detection.  相似文献

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show deficits in cognitive functions. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the pre-attentive information processing in MDD patients are poorly understood. The present study investigated whether MDD patients have impairments in pre-attentive information processing indexed by auditory mismatch negativity (MMN). The deviant-standard reverse oddball paradigm was used to obtain the memory-comparison-based duration auditory MMN in 24 MDD patients and 24 healthy control subjects. Over the frontal–central area, MDD patients exhibited decreased MMN amplitudes only for the increment condition (150-ms MMN), whereas the temporal MMN did not differ between MDD patients and healthy subjects, regardless of the increment or decrement (50-ms MMN) condition. The MMN amplitudes were not correlated with depression symptoms. In addition, the peak latency of MMN amplitudes was longer in the MDD patients than the control subjects. These data indicate that pre-attentive information processing is impaired in MDD patients. This dysfunction may represent a trait of MDD patients rather than a state-dependent phenomenon.  相似文献

Objective

The aim was to study how the measurement error affects the repeatability of mismatch negativity (MMN) measurements.

Methods

Event-related potentials (ERPs) to changes in sound frequency, location, intensity, duration, and composition were recorded five times during 1–3 weeks from 13 healthy adults using a multi-feature MMN paradigm. The accumulation of MMN was modeled empirically with respect to measurement error, and repeatability was estimated at 0.6–3.5-μV error levels. The analysis was made for the results in the single deviant conditions and their pattern (auditory discrimination profile).

Results

At the single-subject level, the measurement error significantly affected the repeatability until it went below 9–17% of MMN peak amplitude. At the group level, the threshold was higher. Peak amplitude was generally the most repeatable parameter. Latency was superior when the error was moderate or small (<2–3 μV).

Conclusions

The measurement error affects the repeatability of MMN. In single-subject studies, it should not be neglected if it exceeds 10% of the MMN amplitude. The application of the auditory discrimination profile is recommended for future applications.

Significance

The study provided quantitative results to support the discussion on improving the repeatability of the MMN measurements. They are expected to apply conditionally to other ERP measurements, too.  相似文献

ObjectiveDifferences in physical features and occurrence probability between standards and deviants in oddball paradigms provide contributions to magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm). We aimed to reduce these influential factors and extract memory-based MMNm by adding a control paradigm.MethodsMagnetoencephalographic responses were recorded in 13 healthy adults with an oddball paradigm (125-ms standard and 50-ms deviant tones) and an equiprobable control paradigm (50-ms control and four other duration-varying tones). The stimulus onset asynchrony was 500 ms. Controlled MMNm was obtained by subtracting control-evoked responses from deviant-evoked responses.ResultsWith respect to the onset of stimulus difference, the peak latency of controlled MMNm was compatible with previous intracranial MMN recordings. Both controlled and traditional MMNm were generated around the superior temporal cortex, whereas the controlled MMNm amplitude was about 70% of traditional MMNm amplitude. Right-hemispheric dominance was observed in traditional MMNm but not in controlled MMNm. N100m amplitude was smaller in standard-evoked than in deviant- or control-evoked responses.ConclusionsControlled MMNm reflects memory-based processing of duration changes, whereas traditional MMNm additionally involves non-memory activations related to differential refractoriness states and physical properties between standard and deviant stimuli.SignificanceThe memory-based processing of auditory deviants may be preferentially extracted by adding a control paradigm.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate whether pre-attentive auditory discrimination is impaired in patients with essential tremor (ET) and to evaluate the role of age at onset in this function.MethodsSeventeen non-demented patients with ET and seventeen age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent an EEG recording during a classical auditory MMN paradigm.ResultsMMN latency was significantly prolonged in patients with elderly-onset ET (>65 years) (p = 0.046), while no differences emerged in either latency or amplitude between young-onset ET patients and controls.ConclusionsThis study represents a tentative indication of a dysfunction of auditory automatic change detection in elderly-onset ET patients, pointing to a selective attentive deficit in this subgroup of ET patients.SignificanceThe delay in pre-attentive auditory discrimination, which affects elderly-onset ET patients alone, further supports the hypothesis that ET represents a heterogeneous family of diseases united by tremor; these diseases are characterized by cognitive differences that may range from a disturbance in a selective cognitive function, such as the automatic part of the orienting response, to more widespread and complex cognitive dysfunctions.  相似文献

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a developmental disorder of brain function characterized by deficits in social interaction including difficulties in understanding emotional expressions. Children with AS share some of the behavioural characteristics with their parents and AS seems to run particularly in the male members of the same families. The aim of the present study was to determine whether similarities could be found between children with AS and their parents at central auditory processing. It was found that in children with AS the sound encoding, as reflected by the exogenous components of event-related potentials, was similarly abnormal as in both their mothers and fathers. However, their abnormal cortical auditory discrimination, as indexed by the prolonged latency of the mismatch negativity, resembled that of their fathers but not that of their mothers. The present results suggest that complex genetic mechanisms may contribute to auditory abnormalities encountered in children with AS.  相似文献

In this article, we review clinical research using the mismatch negativity (MMN), a change-detection response of the brain elicited even in the absence of attention or behavioural task. In these studies, the MMN was usually elicited by employing occasional frequency, duration or speech-sound changes in repetitive background stimulation while the patient was reading or watching videos. It was found that in a large number of different neuropsychiatric, neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as in normal ageing, the MMN amplitude was attenuated and peak latency prolonged. Besides indexing decreased discrimination accuracy, these effects may also reflect, depending on the specific stimulus paradigm used, decreased sensory-memory duration, abnormal perception or attention control or, most importantly, cognitive decline. In fact, MMN deficiency appears to index cognitive decline irrespective of the specific symptomatologies and aetiologies of the different disorders involved.  相似文献

Auditory deviance detection based on regularity encoding appears as one of the basic functional properties of the auditory system. It has traditionally been assessed with the mismatch negativity (MMN) long‐latency component of the auditory evoked potential (AEP). Recent studies have found earlier correlates of deviance detection based on regularity encoding. They occur in humans in the first 50 ms after sound onset, at the level of the middle‐latency response of the AEP, and parallel findings of stimulus‐specific adaptation observed in animal studies. However, the functional relationship between these different levels of regularity encoding and deviance detection along the auditory hierarchy has not yet been clarified. Here we addressed this issue by examining deviant‐related responses at different levels of the auditory hierarchy to stimulus changes varying in their degree of deviation regarding the spatial location of a repeated standard stimulus. Auditory stimuli were presented randomly from five loudspeakers at azimuthal angles of 0°, 12°, 24°, 36° and 48° during oddball and reversed‐oddball conditions. Middle‐latency responses and MMN were measured. Our results revealed that middle‐latency responses were sensitive to deviance but not the degree of deviation, whereas the MMN amplitude increased as a function of deviance magnitude. These findings indicated that acoustic regularity can be encoded at the level of the middle‐latency response but that it takes a higher step in the auditory hierarchy for deviance magnitude to be encoded, thus providing a functional dissociation between regularity encoding and deviance detection along the auditory hierarchy.  相似文献

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AHs), or hearing 'voices', are one of the hallmark symptoms of patients with schizophrenia. The primary objective of this study was to compare hallucinating schizophrenia patients with respect to differences in deviance detection, as indexed by the auditory mismatch negativity (MMN). Patients were recruited during an acute psychotic episode requiring hospitalization, during which time symptoms of psychosis, including auditory hallucinations, are likely to be at their most severe. MMNs to duration, frequency, gap, intensity and location deviants (as elicited by the 'optimal' multi-feature paradigm) were recorded in 12 acutely ill schizophrenia patients (SZ) with persistent AHs and 15 matched healthy controls (HC). Electrical activity was recorded from 32 scalp electrodes. MMN amplitudes and latencies for each deviant were compared between groups and were correlated with trait (PSYRATS) and state measures of AH severity and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) ratings in SZs. There were significant group differences for duration, gap, intensity and location MMN amplitudes, such that SZs exhibited reduced MMNs compared to HCs. Additionally, gap MMN amplitudes were correlated with measures of hallucinatory state and frequency of AHs, while location MMN was correlated with perceived location of AHs. In summary, this study corroborates previous research reporting a robust duration MMN deficit in schizophrenia, as well as reporting gap, intensity and location MMN deficits in acutely ill schizophrenia patients with persistent AHs. Additionally, MMN amplitudes were correlated with state and trait measures of AHs. These findings offer further support to previous work suggesting that the presence of auditory hallucinations may make a significant contribution to the widely reported MMN deficits in schizophrenia.  相似文献

Elevated smoking rates have been noted in schizophrenia, and it has been hypothetically attributed to nicotine's ameliorating abnormal brain processes in this illness. There is some preliminary evidence that nicotine may alter pre-attentive auditory change detection, as indexed by the EEG-derived mismatch negativity (MMN), but no previous study has examined what role auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) may have on these effects. The objective of this study was to examine MMN-indexed acoustic change detection in schizophrenia (SZ) following nicotine administration and elucidate its association with AVH. Using a modified multi-feature paradigm, MMNs to duration, frequency and intensity deviants were recorded in 12 schizophrenia outpatients (SZ) with persistent AVHs following nicotine (6mg) and placebo administration. Electrical activity was recorded from 32 scalp electrodes; MMN amplitudes and latencies for each deviant were compared between treatments and were correlated with trait (PSYRATS) and state measures of AVH severity and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) ratings. Nicotine administration resulted in a shortened latency for intensity MMN. Additionally, nicotine-related change in MMN amplitude was correlated with nicotine-related change in subjective measures of hallucinatory state. In summary, nicotine did not affect MMN amplitudes in schizophrenia patients with persistent AVHs, however this study reports accelerated auditory change detection to intensity deviants with nicotine in this group. Additionally, nicotine appeared to induce a generalized activation of the auditory cortex in schizophrenia, resulting in a concurrent increase in intensity MMN amplitude and subjective clarity of AVHs.  相似文献

Behavioral research has produced little evidence on sound feature discrimination in neonates. Sensory processes underlying sound perception can be studied using the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), which is not contingent on conscious perception and response. Thus, MMN is suitable for studying newborns, who are difficult to obtain behavioral responses from. The present study thus utilized spectrally rich sounds, known to elicit the most replicable MMN in adults, to investigate newborns' preattentive analysis of sound duration and frequency changes. An attempt was also made to control for the obligatory ERP effects on the MMN. Three-partial harmonic tones were presented in Duration and in Frequency oddball conditions to 55 newborns. In the other two, Equiprobable duration and Equiprobable frequency, conditions frequency and duration deviants of the oddball paradigms were presented with equal probabilities among sounds of other durations and frequencies. MMN was elicited in 81% of newborns in Frequency oddball condition and in 78% of newborns in Duration oddball condition. No significant amplitude differences between the duration and frequency MMNs were found, but MMN latency was delayed in Duration condition. The obligatory components seemed to contribute significantly to the deviant-standard difference in Duration but not in Frequency condition. The majority of neonates appear to possess effective sound frequency and duration discrimination mechanisms. Their preattentive sound discrimination is facilitated by spectrally rich sound content. The present findings support a change-detection nature of MMN in neonates; however, sound duration-related obligatory effects need to be taken into account in infant MMN studies.  相似文献

In specific language impairment (SLI), there is a delay in the child’s oral language skills when compared with nonverbal cognitive abilities. The problems typically relate to phonological and morphological processing and word learning. This article reviews studies which have used mismatch negativity (MMN) in investigating low-level neural auditory dysfunctions in this disorder. With MMN, it is possible to tap the accuracy of neural sound discrimination and sensory memory functions. These studies have found smaller response amplitudes and longer latencies for speech and non-speech sound changes in children with SLI than in typically developing children, suggesting impaired and slow auditory discrimination in SLI. Furthermore, they suggest shortened sensory memory duration and vulnerability of the sensory memory to masking effects. Importantly, some studies reported associations between MMN parameters and language test measures. In addition, it was found that language intervention can influence the abnormal MMN in children with SLI, enhancing its amplitude. These results suggest that the MMN can shed light on the neural basis of various auditory and memory impairments in SLI, which are likely to influence speech perception.  相似文献
