When a person standing upright raises an arm on cue, muscles of the left and right sides of the body exhibit changes prior to and specific to the responding arm. We had standing participants perform a visual lexical decision task (“is this letter string a word?”), responding yes by raising one arm and no by raising the other arm. We recorded onset of the arm movement and onset of electromyographic activity in thigh, trunk, and shoulder muscles. We observed the expected responding arm specificity and found that the onset difference favoring word decisions was evident in similar magnitude at all measurement sites, with the difference at the levels of thigh, trunk and shoulder muscles available 225, 189, and 120 ms, respectively, prior to its manifestation at the level of arm movement. We discuss including (a) whole body reaction time along with event-related potentials in determining the decision-response, brain–body temporal relation and (b) response execution along with response initiation in investigating mental chronometry.  相似文献

In the past decade, several arm rehabilitation robots have been developed to assist neurological patients during therapy. Early devices were limited in their number of degrees of freedom and range of motion, whereas newer robots such as the ARMin robot can support the entire arm. Often, these devices are combined with virtual environments to integrate motivating game-like scenarios. Several studies have shown a positive effect of game-playing on therapy outcome by increasing motivation. In addition, we assume that practicing highly functional movements can further enhance therapy outcome by facilitating the transfer of motor abilities acquired in therapy to daily life. Therefore, we present a rehabilitation system that enables the training of activities of daily living (ADL) with the support of an assistive robot. Important ADL tasks have been identified and implemented in a virtual environment. A patient-cooperative control strategy with adaptable freedom in timing and space was developed to assist the patient during the task. The technical feasibility and usability of the system was evaluated with seven healthy subjects and three chronic stroke patients.  相似文献

A large-scale teleradiology project is under way to link a Florida imaging center to the UCLA Department of Radiology. The initial goal is to provide Florida patients in a routine clinical practice environment with subspecialty consultation by academic radiologists. The plan then calls for the addition of other domestic and international sites. Technical issues in planning to establish the necessary teleradiology infrastructure include wide area network design, image compression, distributed archiving, and special viewing station features. Special emphasis is placed on archive design that makes intelligent use of information, such as triggering events from the radiological information system (RIS) for image prefetching and visual cues from photo-icons for full-size image retrieval. Concepts such as teleconsultation and remote procedure monitoring are aimed at providing the same level of services at distant sites that would be available in-house. This article highlights the system design parameters that must be considered to engineer a scalable distributed teleradiology system.  相似文献

An EEG-based brain–computer system can be used to control external devices such as computers, wheelchairs or Virtual Environments. One of the most important applications is a spelling device to aid severely disabled individuals with communication, for example people disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). P300-based BCI systems are optimal for spelling characters with high speed and accuracy, as compared to other BCI paradigms such as motor imagery. In this study, 100 subjects tested a P300-based BCI system to spell a 5-character word with only 5 min of training. EEG data were acquired while the subject looked at a 36-character matrix to spell the word WATER. Two different versions of the P300 speller were used: (i) the row/column speller (RC) that flashes an entire column or row of characters and (ii) a single character speller (SC) that flashes each character individually. The subjects were free to decide which version to test. Nineteen subjects opted to test both versions. The BCI system classifier was trained on the data collected for the word WATER. During the real-time phase of the experiment, the subject spelled the word LUCAS, and was provided with the classifier selection accuracy after each of the five letters. Additionally, subjects filled out a questionnaire about age, sex, education, sleep duration, working duration, cigarette consumption, coffee consumption, and level of disturbance that the flashing characters produced. 72.8% (N = 81) of the subjects were able to spell with 100% accuracy in the RC paradigm and 55.3% (N = 38) of the subjects spelled with 100% accuracy in the SC paradigm. Less than 3% of the subjects did not spell any character correctly. People who slept less than 8 h performed significantly better than other subjects. Sex, education, working duration, and cigarette and coffee consumption were not statistically related to differences in accuracy. The disturbance of the flashing characters was rated with a median score of 1 on a scale from 1 to 5 (1, not disturbing; 5, highly disturbing). This study shows that high spelling accuracy can be achieved with the P300 BCI system using approximately 5 min of training data for a large number of non-disabled subjects, and that the RC paradigm is superior to the SC paradigm. 89% of the 81 RC subjects were able to spell with accuracy 80–100%. A similar study using a motor imagery BCI with 99 subjects showed that only 19% of the subjects were able to achieve accuracy of 80–100%. These large differences in accuracy suggest that with limited amounts of training data the P300-based BCI is superior to the motor imagery BCI. Overall, these results are very encouraging and a similar study should be conducted with subjects who have ALS to determine if their accuracy levels are similar.  相似文献

Equifinality, during arm reaching movements, relates to the capacity of the neuromuscular system to attain the same final position in the presence or absence of transient perturbations. There have been several controversies regarding equifinality in the literature. A brief elastic perturbation, applied during a fast arm movement or just before its initiation, typically does not affect final arm position. On the other hand, several experiments have shown that velocity-dependent perturbations, such as Coriolis force or negative damping, while transient in nature, have a significant effect on final arm position when compared to unperturbed movements. In this study, an unloading paradigm was used to study the role of reflexes with respect to equifinality. The effects on final arm position of suddenly decreasing a static load maintained by fourteen subjects were analyzed. Subjects maintained an initial load produced by a double-joint manipulandum moving in the horizontal plane. The load was suddenly decreased, either in one or in two successive steps with different time intervals, resulting in a rapid reflex-mediated change in arm position. Unloading led to short-latency changes in the activity of shoulder and elbow muscles and significant variations in tonic activity. It was found that the final hand position was shorter for double- versus single-step unloading if the time between two successive changes in load was greater than 100 ms. With a shorter time interval, the final hand positions were the same. This difference in final hand positions was inversely proportional to the hand velocity at the time of the second change in load. Further, agonist/antagonist co-activation increased in double-step unloading. Thus, the change in both the load and the movement velocity may influence the magnitude of the unloading reflex. This may be indicative of a dependence of stretch reflexes on velocity. Perturbation may cause a reflex-mediated increase in joint stiffness, which could explain why equifinality is not preserved after some perturbations, such as velocity-dependant external forces.  相似文献

Although it is of lifelong importance, reading ability is studied primarily in children and adolescents. We examined variation in word recognition in 347 middle-aged male twin pairs. Overall heritability (a2) was 0.45, and shared environmental influences (c2) were 0.28. However, parental education moderated heritability such that a2 was 0.21 at the lowest parental education level and 0.69 at the highest level; c2 was 0.52 and 0.00, respectively. This constitutes a parental education × environment interaction. The higher heritability was due to a decrease in the magnitude of shared environmental factors, rather than an increase in the magnitude of genetic factors. Other cognitive studies have reported gene × environment interactions, but patterns may differ as a function of age or specific cognitive abilities. Our results suggest that shared environmental factors in families with low parental education have long-lasting effects on word recognition ability, well beyond any critical period for developing reading proficiency.  相似文献

Numerous variables have been used in previous attempts to account for the performance of aphasic patients on naming tasks. These include lexical/semantic factors such as frequency, and contextual factors such as whether the target is produced as a single word or in a sentence. This paper reports the case of a pure anomic patient (HY) who was strongly affected by both lexical and contextual factors in his naming. Beyond a strong frequency effect, a marked grammatical class difference was noted. Verb production was far superior to noun production in single word naming. Production of nouns was highly facilitated by provision of a semantically relevant sentence frame. These two findings were related to current models of single word and sentence production; a functional locus for HY's naming deficit is proposed.  相似文献

The movements of female mice were recorded in an artificial environment (a plus-maze). The mice were of strains C57BL/Tb, A/Tb and the F1 produced by crossing them. A central nest box had four arms radiating from it. Food, water and balsa wood were each at the end of one arm; the fourth arm was empty. Movements were recorded automatically without stimulating the animal. Mice of the three genotypes displayed similar patterns of behaviour. The vaginal oestrous cycle was normal, but there was no corresponding fluctuation of movement in the maze. F1 virgins spent about 9.5 hr per day outside the nest, and made a total of about 700 visits to the arms. Their highest rates of visits were to the balsa wood and the empty arm; highest duration was in the balsa arm, and then the food arm. Late pregnancy was accompanied by increased food and water consumption, but greatly decreased visits to and duration of stay in the arms. After parturition, food and water consumption, and duration in all arms, rose steadily to the tenth day post partum. Visits rose only during the first three days post partum. During lactation there was a high rate of visits to the balsa, related to carriage of wood chips to the nest; fewest visits were made to the food, but most time was spent in the food arm. There was a steady rate of visits, and of duration of stay, in the empty arm, throughout.  相似文献

Results obtained from previous studies of word recognition, reading component skills, and reading composite measures suggest that genetic factors may be more important as a cause for reading disability among children with higher IQ scores than among those with lower IQ scores. To investigate the genetic etiology of reading disability further, measures of word recognition, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, and phoneme awareness were obtained from a total of 465 twin pairs with a positive school history of reading problems. The basic and extended DeFries and Fulker (DF) multiple regression models for the analysis of selected twin data were employed to investigate the etiology of group deficits in reading and language skills, as well as to assess differential genetic etiology for the reading-related measures as a function of IQ. Data from 168 sibling pairs (drawn from the twins' families), including fraternal twin pairs and their siblings, as well as non-twin siblings of identical twins were subjected to single-marker analyses using the DF basic linkage model to examine evidence for linkage of a quantitative-trait locus (QTL) for reading and language deficits to the short arm of chromosome 6. Lastly, to investigate the possible differential influence of this QTL as a function of IQ, the sibling pair data were fitted to an extension of the DF basic linkage model. Results indicated that reading and language deficits are significantly heritable and that differential genetic influences as a function of IQ are evident for measures of word recognition and phonological decoding. Results obtained from linkage analyses confirmed the presence of a QTL on chromosome 6p that influences phonological and orthographic skills, as well as phoneme awareness measures, and suggest that this QTL may influence phoneme awareness differentially as a function of IQ: however, future analyses with considerably larger samples are needed to test the hypothesis of differential QTL influence more rigorously.  相似文献

The present study aimed to determine whether the representation of object affordances requires specification of the effector potentially interacting with the object: specifically, in this study, vision of the interacting hand. In Experiment 1 we used an apparatus by which a fruit to be reached and grasped was identified by word reading, whereas another (interfering) fruit was visually perceived at the same location as the target. The apparatus allowed visual presentation of the agent’s interacting hand or prevented it. When visually presented, the hand was perceived as still at the start position even when it moved to grasp the fruit. An interference effect on the grasp congruent with the distractor size was observed only when the hand was visible. In Experiment 2, interference was observed also when a hand different from the agent’s own was visually presented. In both Experiments 1 and 2 the visible fruit interfered with the arm’s reach, but the effect was independent of its size and less dependent on the visually-presented hand. A control experiment (Experiment 3) enabled comparison of the interference of visual stimuli on targets identified by word reading (Experiments 1 and 2) with that of objects identified by word reading on visually-presented targets (Experiment 3). The interference induced by visual stimuli was stronger than the interference induced by objects identified by words (i.e. affordances evoked by visual stimuli were stronger than affordances evoked by semantics). Taken together, the results of the present study suggest that the specification of the agent’s effector is necessary for the elicitation of affordances. However, the elicitation of these affordances was observed for interactions between object and hand (grasp), rather than for interactions between object and arm (reach). Finally, our data confirm the influence of semantics on the control of arm movements, though less strong than that due to visual input.  相似文献

During rhythmic arm cycling, soleus H-reflex amplitudes are reduced by modulation of group Ia presynaptic inhibition. This suppression of reflex amplitude is graded to the frequency of arm cycling with a threshold of 0.8 Hz. Despite the data on modulation of the soleus H-reflex amplitude induced by rhythmic arm cycling, comparatively little is known about the modulation of stretch reflexes due to remote limb movement. Therefore, the present study was intended to explore the effect of arm cycling on stretch and H-reflex amplitudes in the soleus muscle. In so doing, additional information on the mechanism of action during rhythmic arm cycling would be revealed. Although both reflexes share the same afferent pathway, we hypothesized that stretch reflex amplitudes would be less suppressed by arm cycling because they are less inhibited by presynaptic inhibition. Failure to reject this hypothesis would add additional strength to the argument that Ia presynaptic inhibition is the mechanism modulating soleus H-reflex amplitude during rhythmic arm cycling. Participants were seated in a customized chair with feet strapped to footplates. Three motor tasks were performed: static control trials and arm cycling at 1 and 2 Hz. Soleus H-reflexes were evoked using single 1 ms pulses of electrical stimulation delivered to the tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa. A constant M-wave and ~6% MVC activation of soleus were maintained across conditions. Stretch reflexes were evoked using a single sinusoidal pulse at 100 Hz given by a vibratory shaker placed over the triceps surae tendon and controlled by a custom-written LabView program. Results demonstrated that rhythmic arm cycling that was effective for conditioning soleus H-reflexes did not show a suppressive effect on the amplitude of the soleus stretch reflex. We suggest this indicates that stretch reflexes are less sensitive to conditioning by rhythmic arm movement, as compared to H-reflexes, due to the relative insensitivity to Ia presynaptic inhibition.  相似文献

Eight extended dyslexic families with at least four affected individuals were genotyped with twelve genetic markers spanning the Rh (rhesus factor) locus. Eleven of these markers were located on the short arm and the other was on the long arm of chromosome 1. Five theoretically derived phenotypes were used in the linkage analyses: 1) phonemic awareness; 2) phonological decoding; 3) rapid automatized naming; 4) single word reading; and 5) vocabulary. In addition, a lifetime diagnosis of dyslexia was used as a phenotype. Both parametric and non-parametric genetic analyses were completed. The results supported the importance of a putative locus on 1p. In addition, two-locus analyses assuming the interaction between a 1p locus and a 6p locus, previously shown to be of interest for dyslexia, were conducted. As a result, the nonparametric linkage (NPL) scores for rapid automatized naming and phonological decoding were significantly increased. In particular, the NPL scores for rapid automatized naming exceeded 5.0 for certain markers. These results provide strong evidence for separate but jointly acting contributions of the 1p and 6p loci to the reading impairments associated with rapid naming and suggestive evidence for a similar mechanism involving phonological decoding.  相似文献

Rhythmic arm movement reduces Hoffmann (H)-reflex amplitudes in leg muscles by modulation of presynaptic inhibition in group Ia transmission. To date only the acute effect occurring during arm movement has been studied. We hypothesized that the excitability of soleus H-reflexes would remain suppressed beyond a period of arm cycling conditioning. Subjects used a customized arm ergometer to perform rhythmic 1-Hz arm cycling for 30 min. H-reflexes were evoked before, during, and after arm cycling via stimulation of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa. We evaluated a patient with partial gonadal dysgenesis including a right dysgenetic testis and a left streak gonad with rudimentary fallopian tube and uterus. She had ambiguous external genitalia and was raised female. Although her height is normal (25th centile at age 12 years), she has some findings of Ullrich-Turner syndrome. Her karyotype was reported to be 46,X,+marker; subsequent molecular investigations showed the marker to be the short arm of the Y chromosome. Genomic DNA, isolated from leukocytes of the patient and her father, was digested with a variety of restriction endonucleases and subjected to Southern blot analysis. A positive hybridization signal was obtained with probes for the short arm of the Y chromosome (pRsY0.55, SRY, ZFY, 47Z, pY-190, and YC-2) in DNA from the patient, indicating the presence of most if not all of the short arm, while long arm probes (HinfA and pY3.4) indicated that at least 75% of the long arm of the Y chromosome was missing. The gene responsible for testicular determination (TDF) is on the distal portion of the short arm of the Y chromosome; Yq has no known influence on sex determination. Hence, the deletion of the long arm of the Y chromosome cannot explain the gonadal dysgenesis in this patient. One explanation for the gonadal dysgenesis and Ullrich-Turner phenotype in the patient could be undetected 45,X/46,X,+marY mosaicism but no such mosaicism was observed in peripheral lymphocytes. Several investigators have suggested the presence of an "anti-Turner" gene near TDF. Hence it is possible that the clinical phenotype in our patient results from a Y chromosomal defect in sequences flanking TDF, which reduces the function of both TDF and the "anti-Turner" genes.  相似文献

The availability of a remote management system, which provides both physiological-related information about the patient and device-related information about the implanted device, would be helpful during in vivo experiments or clinical trials involving artificial heart implantation. In order to be able to monitor the course of the in vivo experiment continuously regardless of the patient's location, an internet-based remote monitoring system was developed, which can monitor physiological-related information such as pressure (AoP, LAP, RAP, PAP) and flow data, as well as device-related information such as current, direction and pump operating conditions. The home care artificial heart monitoring system which we developed consists of four main components, which are the transcutaneous information transmission system (TITS), local monitoring station (LMS), data server station (DSS), and client monitoring station (CMS). The device-related information and physiological-related information can be transmitted in real time from a patient in a remote non-clinical environment to the specialist situated in a clinic depending on the current capabilities and availability of the internet. The local monitoring station situated at the remote site is composed of a data acquisition and preprocessing unit connected to a computer via its RS-232 port, and which communicate using a Java-based client-server architecture. The remote monitoring system so developed was used during an in vivo experiment of the artificial heart implantation for 2 months and performed successfully according to design specifications.  相似文献

This paper reports a single case of ipsilesional left neglect dyslexia and interprets it according to the three-level model of visual word recognition proposed by Caramazza and Hillis (1990). The three levels reflect a progression from the physical stimulus to an abstract representation of a word. RR was not impaired at the first, retinocentric, level, which represents the individual features of letters within a word according to the location of the word in the visual field: She made the same number of errors to words presented in her left visual field as in her right visual field. A deficit at this level should also mean the patient neglects all stimuli. This did not occur with RR: She did not neglect when naming the items in rows of objects and rows of geometric symbols. In addition, although she displayed significant neglect dyslexia when making visual matching judgements on pairs of words and nonwords, she did not do so to pairs of nonsense letter shapes, shapes which display the same level of visual complexity as letters in words. RR was not impaired at the third, graphemic, level, which represents the ordinal positions of letters within a word: She continued to neglect the leftmost (spatial) letter of words presented in mirror-reversed orientation and she did not neglect in oral spelling. By elimination, these results suggest RR's deficit affects a spatial reference frame where the representational space is bounded by the stimulus: A stimulus-centred level of representation. We define five characteristics of a stimulus-centred deficit, as manifest in RR. First, it is not the case that neglect dyslexia occurs because the remaining letters in a string attract or capture attention away from the leftmost letter(s). Second, the deficit is continuous across the letter string. Third, perceptually significant features, such as spaces, define potential words. Fourth, the whole, rather than part, of a letter is neglected. Fifth, category information is preserved. It is concluded that the Caramazza-Hillis model accounts well for RR's data, although we conclude that neglect dyslexia can be present when a more general visuospatial neglect is absent.  相似文献

A torsion balance, which electrically records the radiation pressure of very low intensity ultrasonic beams, is described. The movement of the balance is detected by a capacitive transducer attached to the balance arm. Using the output from this transducer, a servosystem impresses a magnetic force on the arm of the torsion balance in such a way that the arm is always held in the same position. Ultrasonic power as low as 0·03 mW can be detected. In the 10 mW range, the error of the balance is less than 5 per cent.  相似文献

A well-coordinated pattern of eye and hand movements can be observed during goal-directed arm movements. Typically, a saccadic eye movement precedes the arm movement, and its occurrence is temporally correlated with the start of the arm movement. Furthermore, the coupling of gaze and aiming movements is also observable after pointing initiation. It has recently been observed that saccades cannot be directed to new target stimuli, away from a pointing target stimulus. Saccades directed to targets presented during the final phase of a pointing movement were delayed until after pointing movement offset ("gaze anchoring"). The present study investigated whether ocular gaze is anchored to a pointing target during the entire pointing movement. In experiment 1, new targets were presented at various times during the duration of a pointing movement, triggered by the kinematics arm moment itself (movement onset, peak acceleration/velocity/deceleration, and offset). Subjects had to make a saccade to the new target as fast as possible while maintaining the pointing movement to the initial target. Saccadic latencies were increased by an amount of time that approximately equaled the remaining pointing time after saccadic target presentation, with the majority of saccades executed after pointing movement offset. The nature of the signal driving gaze stabilization during pointing was investigated in experiment 2. In previous experiments where ocular gaze was anchored to a pointing target, subjects could always see their moving arm, thus it was unknown whether a visual image of the moving arm, an afferent (proprioceptive) signal or an efferent (motor control related) signal produced gaze anchoring. In experiment 2 subjects had to point with or without vision of the moving arm to test whether a visual signal is used to anchor gaze to a pointing target. Results indicate that gaze anchoring was also observed without vision of the moving arm. The findings support the existence of a mechanism enforcing ocular gaze anchoring during the entire duration of a pointing movement. Moreover, such a mechanism uses an internally generated, or proprioceptive, nonvisual signal. Possible neural substrates underlying these processes are discussed, as well as the role of selective attention.  相似文献
