The primate posterior parietal cortex (PPC) plays an important role in representing and recalling spatial relationships and in the ability to orient visual attention. This is evidenced by the parietal activation observed in brain imaging experiments performed during visuo- spatial tasks, and by the contralateral neglect syndrome that often accompanies parietal lesions. Individual neurons in monkey parietal cortex respond vigorously to the appearance of single, behaviorally relevant stimuli, but little is known about how they respond to more complex visual displays. The current experiments addressed this issue by recording activity from single neurons in area 7a of the PPC in monkeys performing a spatial version of a match-to-sample task. The task required them to locate salient stimuli in multiple-stimulus displays and release a lever after a subsequent stimulus appeared at the same location. Neurons responded preferentially to the appearance of salient stimuli inside their receptive fields. The presence of multiple stimuli did not affect appreciably the spatial tuning of responses in the majority of neurons or the population code for the location of the salient stimulus. Responses to salient stimuli could be distinguished from background stimuli approximately 100 ms after the onset of the cue. These results suggest that area 7a neurons represent the location of the stimulus attracting the animal's attention and can provide the spatial information required for directing attention to a salient stimulus in a complex scene.  相似文献

We recorded the neuronal activity in the arm area of the motor cortex and parietal area 7a of two monkeys during interception of stimuli moving in real and apparent motion. The stimulus moved along a circular path with one of five speeds (180-540 degrees/s), and was intercepted at 6 o'clock by exerting a force pulse on a semi-isometric joystick which controlled a cursor on the screen. The real stimuli were shown in adjacent positions every 16 ms, whereas in the apparent motion situation five stimuli were flashed successively at the vertices of a regular pentagon. The results showed, first, that a group of neurons in both areas above responded not only during the interception but also during a NOGO task in which the same stimuli were presented in the absence of a motor response. This finding suggests these areas are involved in both the processing of the stimulus as well as in the preparation and production of the interception movement. In addition, a group of motor cortical cells responded during the interception task but not during a center --> out task, in which the monkeys produced similar force pulses towards eight stationary targets. This group of cells may be engaged in sensorimotor transformations more specific to the interception of real and apparent moving stimuli. Finally, a multiple regression analysis revealed that the time-varying neuronal activity in area 7a and motor cortex was related to various aspects of stimulus motion and hand force in both the real and apparent motion conditions, with stimulus-related activity prevailing in area 7a and hand-related activity prevailing in motor cortex. In addition, the neural activity was selectively associated with the stimulus angle during real motion, whereas it was tightly correlated to the time-to-contact in the apparent motion condition, particularly in the motor cortex. Overall, these observations indicate that neurons in motor cortex and area 7a are processing different parameters of the stimulus depending on the kind of stimulus motion, and that this information is used in a predictive fashion in motor cortex to trigger the interception movement.  相似文献

Spatial attention modulates the activity of inferior parietal neurons. A statistically rigorous approach to classical retinotopic mapping was used to quantify the receptive fields of area 7a neurons under 2 attentional conditions. Measurements were made with retinal stimulation held constant and the locus of attention manipulated covertly. Both tasks required central fixation but differed in the locus of covert attention (either on the center fixation point or on a peripheral square target in one of 25 locations). The neuron's identity over the recording session was confirmed using chaos theory to characterize unique temporal patterns. Sixty-six percent of the neurons changed prestimulus activity based on task state. Retinotopic mapping showed no evidence for foveal sparing. Attentional factors influenced visual responses for approximately 30% of the neurons. Two types of modulation were equally observed. One group of cells had a multiplicative scaling of response, with equal instances of enhancement and suppression. A second group of cells had a complex interaction of visual and attentional signals, such that spatial tuning was subject to a nonlinear modulation across the visual field based on attentional constraints. These 2 cell groups may have different roles in the shift of attention preceding motor behaviors and may underlie shifts in parietal retinotopic maps observed with intrinsic optical imaging.  相似文献

The synaptic mechanisms underlying the generation of orientation and direction selectivity in layer 4 of the primary visual cortex are still largely unclear. Previous in vivo work has shown that intra-cortical inhibition plays a major role in generating the properties of orientation and direction selectivity. Excitatory and inhibitory cortical neurons differ in their receptive field properties: excitatory neurons tend to be orientation- and direction-selective, inhibitory neurons tend to be orientation-, but not direction-selective. Here we have compared the relationship between direction preference maps recorded in vivo and synaptic input maps recorded in vitro from excitatory and inhibitory stellate cells in layer 4 of ferret visual cortex. Our goal was to test whether the differences in direction tuning between these cell populations might result from different inhibitory connectivity patterns. We found that excitatory neurons, which are direction tuned in vivo, receive approximately 50% of their inhibitory inputs from cortical regions of opposite direction preference whereas inhibitory cells, which are not or poorly direction tuned, receive only very few inputs from regions of opposite direction preference. This confirms that inhibitory connections arising in cortical regions of opposite direction preference may be required to create or strengthen direction tuning in their target neurons. Thus, differences in intracortical inhibitory circuit patterns may underlie the differences in receptive field properties observed between excitatory and inhibitory neurons in vivo.  相似文献

Detecting changes in an ever-changing environment is highly advantageous, and this ability may be critical for survival. In the present study, we investigated the neural substrates of change detection in the context of a visual working memory task. Subjects maintained a sample visual stimulus in short-term memory for 6 s, and were asked to indicate whether a subsequent, test stimulus matched or did not match the original sample. To study change detection largely uncontaminated by attentional state, we compared correct change and correct no-change trials at test. Our results revealed that correctly detecting a change was associated with activation of a network comprising parietal and frontal brain regions, as well as activation of the pulvinar, cerebellum, and inferior temporal gyrus. Moreover, incorrectly reporting a change when none occurred led to a very similar pattern of activations. Finally, few regions were differentially activated by trials in which a change occurred but subjects failed to detect it (change blindness). Thus, brain activation was correlated with a subject's report of a change, instead of correlated with the physical change per se. We propose that frontal and parietal regions, possibly assisted by the cerebellum and the pulvinar, might be involved in controlling the deployment of attention to the location of a change, thereby allowing further processing of the visual stimulus. Visual processing areas, such as the inferior temporal gyrus, may be the recipients of top-down feedback from fronto-parietal regions that control the reactive deployment of attention, and thus exhibit increased activation when a change is reported (irrespective of whether it occurred or not). Whereas reporting that a change occurred, be it correctly or incorrectly, was associated with strong activation in fronto-parietal sites, change blindness appears to involve very limited territories.  相似文献

Neurons in cat area 17 can be grouped in 4 different electrophysiological cell classes (regular spiking, intrinsically bursting, chattering, and fast spiking [FS]). However, little is known of the functional properties of these different cell classes. Here we compared orientation and direction selectivity between these cell classes in cat area 17 and found that a subset of FS inhibitory neurons, usually with complex receptive fields, exhibited little selectivity in comparison with other cell types. Differences in occurrence and amplitude of gamma-range membrane fluctuations, as well as in numbers of action potentials in response to optimal visual stimuli, did not parallel differences observed for orientation and direction selectivity. Instead, differences in selectivity resulted mostly from differences in tuning of the membrane potential responses, although variations in spike threshold also contributed: weakly selective FS neurons exhibited both a lower spike threshold and more broadly tuned membrane potential responses in comparison with the other cell classes. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that a subgroup of FS neurons receives connections and possesses intrinsic properties allowing the generation of weakly selective responses. The existence of weakly selective inhibitory neurons is consistent with orientation selectivity models that rely on broadly tuned inhibition.  相似文献

Perception of two- and three-dimensional optic flow critically depends upon extrastriate cortices that are part of the 'dorsal stream' for visual processing. Neurons in area 7a, a sub-region of the posterior parietal cortex, have a dual sensitivity to visual input and to eye position. The sensitivity and selectivity of area 7a neurons to three sensory cues - optic flow, retinotopic stimulus position and eye position - were studied. The visual response to optic flow was modulated by the retinotopic stimulus position and by the eye position in the orbit. The position dependence of the retinal and eye position modulation (i.e. gain field) were quantified by a quadratic regression model that allowed for linear or peaked receptive fields. A local maximum (or minimum) in both the retinotopic fields and the gain fields was observed, suggesting that these sensory qualities are not necessarily linearly represented in area 7a. Neurons were also found that simply encoded the eye position in the absence of optic flow. The spatial tuning for the eye position signals upon stationary stimuli and optic flow was not the same, suggesting multiple anatomical sources of the signals. These neurons can provide a substrate for spatial representation while primates move in the environment.   相似文献

The relationships between the distribution of visuomanual signals in parietal cortex and that of parieto-frontal projections are the subject of the present study. Single cell recording was performed in areas PEc and V6A, where different anatomical tracers were also injected. The monkeys performed a variety of behavioral tasks, aimed at studying the visual and motor properties of parietal cells, as well as the potential combination of retinal-, eye- and hand-related signals on cell activity. The activity of most cells was related to the direction of movement and the active position of the hand. Many of these reach-related cells were influenced by eye position information. Fewer cells displayed relationships to saccadic eye movements. The activity of most neurons related to a combination of both hand and eye signals. Many cells were also modulated during preparation for hand movement. Light-dark differences of activity were common and interpreted as related to the sight and monitoring of hand motion and/or position in the visual field. Most cells studied were very sensitive to moving visual stimuli and also responded to optic flow stimulation. Visual receptive fields were generally large and extended to the periphery of the visual field. For most neurons, the orientation of the preferred directions computed across different epochs and tasks conditions clustered within a limited sector of space, the field of global tuning. This can be regarded as an ideal frame to combine spatially congruent eye- and hand-related information for different forms of visuomanual behavior. All these properties were common to both PEc and V6A. Retinal, eye- and hand-related activity types, as well as parieto-frontal association cells, were distributed in a periodic fashion across the tangential domain of areas PEc and V6A. These functional and anatomical distributions were characterized and compared through a spectral and coherency analysis, which revealed the existence of a selective 'match' between activity types and parieto-frontal connections. This match depended on where each individual efferent projection was addressed. The results of the present and of the companion study can be relevant for a re-interpretation of optic ataxia as the consequence of the breakdown of the combination of retinal-, eye- and hand-related directional signals within the global tuning fields of parietal neurons.  相似文献

We investigated the relation between electrophysiological and hemodynamic measures of brain activity through comparison of intracranially recorded event-related local field potentials (ERPs) and blood-oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD fMRI). We manipulated the duration of visual checkerboard stimuli across trials and measured stimulus-duration-related changes in ERP and BOLD activity in three brain regions: peri-calcarine cortex, the fusiform gyrus and lateral temporal-occipital (LTO) cortex. ERPs were recorded from patients who had indwelling subdural electrodes as part of presurgical testing, while BOLD responses were measured in similar brain regions in a second set of subjects. Similar BOLD responses were measured in peri-calcarine and fusiform regions, with both showing monotonic but non-linear increases in hemodynamic amplitude with stimulus duration. In sharp contrast, very different ERP responses were observed in these same regions, such that calcarine electrodes exhibited onset potentials, sustained activity over the course of stimulus duration and prominent offset potentials, while fusiform electrodes only exhibited onset potentials that did not vary with stimulus duration. No duration-related ERP or BOLD changes were observed in LTO. Additional analyses revealed no consistent changes in the EEG spectrum across different brain sites that correlated with duration-related changes in the BOLD response. We conclude that the relation between ERPs and fMRI differs across brain regions.  相似文献

To what extent does neural activation in human visual cortex follow the temporal dynamics of the optical retinal stimulus? Specifically, to what extent does stimulus evoked neural activation persist after stimulus termination? In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the resulting temporal non-linearities across the entire constellation of human visual areas. Gray-scale images of animals, houses and faces were presented at two different presentation rates - 1 and 4 Hz - and the fMRI signal was analyzed in retinotopic and in high order occipito-temporal visual areas. In early visual areas and the motion sensitive area MT/V5, a fourfold increase in stimulus presentation rate evoked a twofold increase in signal amplitude. However, in high order visual areas, signal amplitude increased only by 25%. A control experiment ruled out the possibility that this difference was due to signal saturation ('ceiling') effects. A likely explanation for the stronger non-linearities in occipito-temporal cortex is a persistent neuronal activation that continues well after stimulus termination in the 1 Hz condition. These persistent activations might serve as a short term (iconic) memory mechanism for preserving a trace of the stimulus even in its absence and for future integration with temporally correlated stimuli. Two alternative models of persistence (inhibitory and excitatory) are proposed to explain the data.  相似文献

Caudal area PE (PEc) of the macaque posterior parietal cortex has been shown to be a crucial node in visuomotor coordination during reaching. The present study was aimed at studying visual and somatosensory organization of this cortical area. Visual stimulations activated 53% of PEc neurons. The overwhelming majority (89%) of these visual cells were best activated by a dark stimulus on a lighter background. Somatosensory stimulations activated 56% of PEc neurons: most were joint neurons (73%); a minority (24%) showed tactile receptive fields, most of them located on the arms. Area PEc has not a clear retinotopy or somatotopy. Among the cells tested for both somatosensory and visual sensitivity, 22% were bimodal, 25% unimodal somatosensory, 34% unimodal visual, and 19% were insensitive to either stimulation. No clear clustering of the different classes of sensory neurons was observed. Visual and somatosensory receptive fields of bimodal cells were not in register. The damage in the human brain of the likely homologous of macaque PEc produces deficits in locomotion and in whole-body interaction with the visual environment. Present data show that macaque PEc has sensory properties and a functional organization in line with the view of an involvement of this area in those processes.  相似文献

There are regularly arranged blobs that contain neurons labeled by cytochrome oxidase (CO) in the supragranular layer of the primary visual cortex (V1) of monkeys and cats. This theoretical study demonstrates that CO-blob-like patterns can be reproduced based on the thermodynamic model for the activity-dependent self-organization of afferent inputs from two different groups of neurons to the supragranular layer of the visual cortex. Computer simulation based on the model shows that within a particular parameter range each blob is centered in the ocular dominance (OD) band, as observed in macaque monkeys and galagos. Furthermore, by increasing the strength of correlation in activity between inputs from the two eyes, nearby blobs merge across OD borders, as seen in the cat visual cortex. Finally, for monocular deprivation, blobs in the deprived eyes shrink as observed in monkeys and cats. For binocular deprivation, less intensely labeled blobs were reproduced, while the blob density did not change as observed in monkeys.  相似文献

Everyday visual scenes contain a variety of stimuli that vary in their significance. The companion paper demonstrates that neurons in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are capable of encoding the spatial locations of the salient stimulus in multiple stimulus scenes. The present experiment sought to address how neuronal responses to stimuli appearing in the receptive field are modulated after attention has been drawn to one of multiple stimuli in a visual scene. We recorded from area 7a of the PPC in monkeys trained to do a spatial version of a match-to-sample task. The results show that neuronal responses are greatly suppressed when stimuli appear at previously attended locations. No reduction in responsiveness is observed for locations where stimuli had previously appeared but did not draw attention. These results support the hypothesis that area 7a has a role in redirecting attention to stimuli appearing at novel, unattended locations.  相似文献

Recognition of biological motion is one of the essential ingredients of human evolutionary survival. When biological motion is revealed solely by a set of light dots on the joints of an invisible human figure, the perceptual system reliably distinguishes it from similar configurations. Here, we assessed the changes in neuromagnetic cortical responses during visual perception of biological motion. Healthy humans saw a randomized set of stimuli consisting of a point-light canonical walker and a scrambled configuration in which the spatial positions of dots were randomly rearranged on the screen. In separate runs, configurations were presented either within an upright or inverted (180 degrees ) orientation in the image plane. Participants performed a one-back repetition task lifting a forefinger in response to the second of two consecutive identical stimuli of each type. Both recognizable upright and non-recognizable inverted walkers evoke enhancements in oscillatory gamma brain activity (25-30 Hz) over the left occipital cortices as early as 100 ms from stimulus onset. Only a recognizable upright walker, however, yields further consecutive peaks over the parietal (130 ms) and right temporal (170 ms) lobes. Scrambled displays do not elicit any increases in the gamma response. The stimulus-specific time course and topographic dynamics of cortical oscillatory activity indicate that the brain rapidly dissociates spatial coherence and meaning revealed through biological movement.  相似文献

Cortical specialization for processing first- and second-order motion   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
Distinct mechanisms underlying the visual perception of luminance-(first-order) and contrast-defined (second-order) motion havebeen proposed from electrophysiological, human psychophysicaland neurological studies; however a cortical specializationfor these mechanisms has proven elusive. Here human brain imaging combined with psychophysical methods was used to assess corticalspecializations for processing these two kinds of motion. Acommon stimulus construction was employed, controlling for differencesin spatial and temporal properties, psychophysical performanceand attention. Distinct cortical regions have been found preferentiallyprocessing either first- or second-order motion, both in occipitaland parietal lobes, producing the first physiological evidencein humans to support evidence from psychophysical studies, brainlesion sites and computational models. These results provideevidence for the idea that first-order motion is computed inV1 and second-order motion in later occipital visual areas, and additionally suggest a functional dissociation between thesetwo kinds of motion beyond the occipital lobe.  相似文献

There is strong experimental evidence that guiding the arm toward a visual target involves an initial vectorial transformation from direction in visual space to direction in motor space. Constraints on this transformation are imposed (i) by the neural codes for incoming information: the desired movement direction is thought to be signalled by populations of broadly tuned neurons and arm position by populations of monotonically tuned neurons; and (ii) by the properties of outgoing information: the actual movement direction results from the collective action of broadly tuned neurons whose preferred directions rotate with the position of the arm. A neural network model is presented that computes the visuomotor mapping, given these constraints. Appropriate operations are learned by the network in an unsupervised fashion through repeated action- perception cycles by recoding the arm-related proprioceptive information. The resulting solution has two interesting properties: (i) the required transformation is executed accurately over a large part of the reaching space, although few positions are actually learned; and (ii) properties of single neurons and populations in the network closely resemble those of neurons and populations in parietal and motor cortical regions. This model thus suggests a realistic scenario for the calculation of coordinate transformations and initial motor command for arm reaching movements.  相似文献

Cortical synchronization at gamma-frequencies (35-90 Hz) has been proposed to define the connectedness among the local parts of a perceived visual object. This hypothesis is still under debate. We tested it under conditions of binocular rivalry (BR), where a monkey perceived alternations among conflicting gratings presented singly to each eye at orthogonal orientations. We made multi-channel microelectrode recordings of multi-unit activity (MUA) and local field potentials (LFP) from striate cortex (V1) during BR while the monkey indicated his perception by pushing a lever. We analyzed spectral power and coherence of MUA and LFP over 4-90 Hz. As in previous work, coherence of gamma-signals in most pairs of recording locations strongly depended on grating orientation when stimuli were presented congruently in both eyes. With incongruent (rivalrous) stimulation LFP power was often consistently modulated in consonance with the perceptual state. This was not visible in MUA. These perception-related modulations of LFP occurred at low and medium frequencies (< 30 Hz), but not at gamma-frequencies. Perception-related modulations of LFP coherence were also restricted to the low-medium range. In conclusion, our results do not support the expectation that gamma-synchronization in V1 is related to the perceptual state during BR, but instead suggest a perception-related role of synchrony at low and medium frequencies.  相似文献

Multisensory object-recognition processes were investigated by examining the combined influence of visual and auditory inputs upon object identification--in this case, pictures and vocalizations of animals. Behaviorally, subjects were significantly faster and more accurate at identifying targets when the picture and vocalization were matched (i.e. from the same animal), than when the target was represented in only one sensory modality. This behavioral enhancement was accompanied by a modulation of the evoked potential in the latency range and general topographic region of the visual evoked N1 component, which is associated with early feature processing in the ventral visual stream. High-density topographic mapping and dipole modeling of this multisensory effect were consistent with generators in lateral occipito-temporal cortices, suggesting that auditory inputs were modulating processing in regions of the lateral occipital cortices. Both the timing and scalp topography of this modulation suggests that there are multisensory effects during what is considered to be a relatively early stage of visual object-recognition processes, and that this modulation occurs in regions of the visual system that have traditionally been held to be unisensory processing areas. Multisensory inputs also modulated the visual 'selection-negativity', an attention dependent component of the evoked potential this is usually evoked when subjects selectively attend to a particular feature of a visual stimulus.  相似文献

Group I metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors play a critical role in the regulation of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) in vivo. Little is known, however, about the contribution of the individual subtypes mGlu1 and mGlu5 to learning processes and LTP. We investigated the involvement of mGlu5 in hippocampal LTP and spatial learning using the selective antagonist 2-methyl-6-(phenylethynyl)pyridine (MPEP). Rats were chronically implanted with recording and stimulating electrodes to enable measurement of evoked potentials from the medial perforant path - dentate gyrus granule cell synapses. An injection cannula was inserted into the ipsilateral cerebral ventricle to enable drug application. Experiments were begun 10 days subsequent to the implantation procedure. Robust LTP which lasted for over 25 h was generated using 200 Hz tetanization. MPEP, applied in concentrations which did not affect basal synaptic transmission, dose-dependently impaired the induction and expression of LTP. Application of MPEP 5 min after tetanization inhibited late LTP (>24 h). The effects of daily MPEP application on performance in an eight-arm radial maze were evaluated. MPEP-treated rats showed deficits in reference and working memory performance compared to vehicle-treated controls. Rearing, grooming and locomotor activity were unaffected in MPEP-treated animals. These data highlight the importance of mGlu5 for both LTP and spatial learning and emphasize the significance of these receptors for information storage on both synaptic and behavioural levels.  相似文献

Examples of convergence of visual and auditory, or visual and somatosensory, inputs onto individual neurons abound throughout the brain, but substantially fewer incidences of auditory-somatosensory neurons have been reported. The present experiments sought to examine auditory-somatosensory convergence to assess whether there is a feature of this type of convergence that might obscure it from conventional methods of multisensory detection. Auditory-somatosensory convergence was explored in cat anterior ectosylvian sulcus (AES) cortex, where higher-order somatosensory area IV (SIV) and auditory field of the anterior ectosylvian sulcus (FAES) share a common border. While neuroanatomical tracers documented a projection from FAES to SIV, physiological studies failed to reveal the bimodal neurons expected from such cross-modal connectivity. Stimulation of FAES through indwelling electrodes also failed to excite any of the SIV neurons examined. However, when stimulation of auditory FAES was combined with somatosensory stimulation, a large majority (66%) of SIV neurons showed a significant response attenuation. FAES-induced response suppression was specific to SIV, could not be elicited by activating other auditory regions and was blocked by the microiontophoretic application of the GABAergic antagonist bicuculline methiodide. Based on these data, a novel, cross-modal circuit is proposed involving projections from auditory FAES to somatosensory SIV, where local inhibitory interneurons 'reverse the sign' of the cross-modal signals to produce auditory-somatosensory suppression. This form of excitatory-inhibitory multisensory convergence has not been reported before and suggests that the level of interaction between auditory and somatosensory modalities has been substantially underestimated.  相似文献
