The influence of social status on some immunological characteristics in experimental animals was studied (sensory contact model). Lactate dehydrogenase activity in blood lymphocytes changed similarly in aggressive and submissive mice probably due to social stress. The activity of succinate dehydrogenase changed differently and correlated with the type of social behavior. The effect of ionizing radiation on the activity of succinate dehydrogenase (complex II) and succinate-cytochrome C-oxidoreductase in peripheral blood lymphocytes is studied on rats exposed to whole-body γ-irradiation in doses of 9.5–10.5 Gy. On day 5 after irradiation, when the number of lymphocytes is sharply reduced, enzyme activity in the remaining population is found to be reliably increased. These changes are not related to biological cycles. It is assumed that most of the survivors after high-dose irradiation are the cell populations maintaining a high level of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. The ability of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to convert the androgenic steroid metabolite androstenedione diminishes in women over 45 years old or during menopause. In patients with breast cancer in menopause the ability of lymphocytes to convert androstenedione is enhanced compared with the control. The intensity of conversion in circulating lymphocytes correlates with the blood concentration of sex steroids. Blood specimens from 89 human embryos and fetuses were analyzed by immunological methods during gestation weeks 4–40. All formed elements circulate in fetal blood starting from week 13 of gestation. Lymphocytes predominate among blood leukocytes, because normally lymphocytosis is an inherent, feature of blood. T cells and their subpopulations: active T lymphocytes, Tγ lymphocytes, and theophylline-sensitive and risistant, cells are present. B lymphocytes are represented by cells with immunoglobulins M and G, zero cells, and large granular lymphocytes. Development of secondary immunodeficiency in patients with acute nonspecific inflammatory diseases of the uterine appendages is associated with disorders in chronobiological characteristics of energy metabolism in blood lymphocytes. The differences in the enzyme activities in patients and donors are observed in the evening during all seasons of the year; seasonal variations are typical only of the morning enzyme spectrum. Study of lymphoid organs and T and B cells in white rats shows that long-term stress causes progressive suppression of the immune response. It is demonstrated that benzodiazepine binding sites on human peripheral blood lymphocytes are the peripheral type receptors. The binding sites for the selective agonist3H-Ro 5-4864, but not for the antagonist3H-PK 11195, are completely inactivated by freezing-thawing of lymphocytes. The binding of3H-Ro 5-4864 to intact lymphocytes is activated by GABA and (+)baclofen. It is shown that the selective ligands Ro 5-4864 and PK 11195 bind to different subtypes of benzodiazepine receptors on human peripheral blood lymphocytes. After a 30-min incubation in the presence of adenosine, the suppressor activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes from healthy subjects decreases as well as the count of CD4+ cells, while the count of CD8+ cells increases. The suppressor activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with atopic bronchial asthma and the count of CD8+ cells increase after a 16-h incubation with adenosine, while a 30-min incubation enhances the expression of CD4 antigen. It is demonstrated that pertussis toxin and hydrocortisone potentiate the adenosine-induced rise of the cAMP concentration in lymphocytes. Hydrocortisone elicits an immediate (for the simultaneous addition of adenosine and cortisol) and reversible effect. The effect of pertussis toxin has a latency and is irreversible. The common variation pattern and the synchronous increases of enzymatic and solar activity are explained by the identical frequencies of the bio- and heliorhythms and by the strict phase coordination of the latter. It is shown to be possible to predict enzymatic activity according to the sum of the resonance heliorhythms. The wave genesis of the resonance between enzymatic and solar fluctuations is confirmed by the fact that the periods of the bio- and heliorhythms are the same as the wave periods of planets. The conventional micromethod of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate (F-2,6-P2) determination is optimized for human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The F-2,6-P2 content in lymphocytes of healthy subjects is 0.8±0.2 pmol/106 cells or 6.7±1.1 pmol/mg protein. Preliminary findings show a decrease in the F-2,6-P2 content in lymphocytes from patients with severe diabetes mellitus. Cells forming rosettes with homologous or heterologous spermatozoa were found in the thymus, spleen, and bone marrow of sexually mature guinea pigs and of 14–30-week-old human fetuses, and also in the peripheral blood of men suffering from sterility. On the development of autoimmune orchitis after measured trauma to the testis in rats or after immunization of guinea pigs with testicular tissue homogenate mixed with Freund's complete adjuvant, cells forming rosettes with spermatozoa were found to appear in the spleen and thymus of the rats, and their number in the lymphoid organs of the guinea pigs increased. These procedures had no effect on the number of cells forming rosettes with sheep red blood cells in the lymphoid organs of rats and guinea pigs. The possible use of this newly discovered ability of human and animal lymphocytes to form spontaneous and immune rosettes with spermatozoa as a means of assessing the degree of differentiation of lymphocytes and of their sensitization to spermatozoal antigens in cases of disturbance of spermatogenesis of autoimmune nature is discussed.Laboratory of Human Embryonic Histogenesis, Institute of Human Morphology, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. The effect of ricin and its B-subunit on cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration in human lymphocytes was studied using a fluorescence probe. Both agents dose-dependently increased cytosolic free Ca2+ by stimulating its release from of thapsigargin-sensitive store.
