TCM Treatment for 50 Cases of Acute Protrusion of the Lumbar Intervertebral Disc

From January 1998 to August 2000,the authorhas treated 50 cases of acute protrusion of the lumbarintervertebral disc by Chinese herbs,massotherapy,and functional exercise with satisfactory therapeuticresults reported in the following.     

Acupuncture for Treatment of Climacteric Syndrome——A Report of 35 Cases

To evaluate the effects of acupuncture for treatment of climacteric syndrome. Methods: The 65 cases in this series were randomly assigned to the acupuncture group (N=35) and the control group (N=30),with the former treated by acupuncture and the latter by medication respectively. The therapeutic effects were evaluated by means of the clinical outcome, improvement in the symptom scores and the regults of radioimmunoassays. Results: In the acupuncture group, 12 cases were cured, 16 cases markedly effective, and 6 cases improved, the total effective rate being as high as 97.14%. The decrease in the symptom scores, and especially the elevation of the decreased E2 level and the decrease of the increased FSH and LH levels,demonstrated that acupuncture therapy was superior to medication. Conclusion: Acupuncture for regulating the mental activities and reinforcing the kidney is an effective therapy for climacteric syndrome.     

Treatment of Cough and Dyspnea due to Acute Bronchitis by Plaster for Cough and Dyspnea——A Report of 735 Cases

In the light of the theory of treating the internal disease externally,an externally used plaster tortreating cough and dyspnea due to acute bronchitis(Ke Chuan Yi Tie Kang 咳喘一贴康)wassuccessfully applied to 735 cases of acute bronchitis(the treatment group),with the other 423 casestreated with routine western drugs as controls.The results showed that the cure rate in the treatmentgroup was significantly higher than that in the control group(P<0.01);and that in the treatmentgroup,the cure rate for the wind-cold type of acute bronchitis was significantly higher than that forthe wind-heat type of acute bronchitis(P<0.01).     

The Impact of the Acute Results on the Long—Term Outcome after the Treatment of In—stent Restenosis：A Serial Intravascular Ultrasoun Study

Stenting reduces acute complications and restenosis compared to balloon angioplasty and other devices. However, in- stent restenosis (ISR) is an important clinical problem. The current serial intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)analysis was undertaken to determine whether the acute results obtained during the treatment of ISR influence the long term results and whether this is true for patients treated with and without adjunct brachytherapy.     

Jinger Moxibustion for Treatment of Cervical Vertigo——A Report of 40 Cases

In order to observe the therapeutic effects of jinger moxibustion for cervical vertigo,78 cases were randomlydivided into 2 groups,of whom 40 were treated with jinger moxibustion and 38 treated with acupuncture.Theresults showed a cure rate of 72.5% with a total effective rate of 97.5% in the jinger moxibustion group,while44.7% and 73.7% respectively in the acupuncture group.The comparisons between the two groups in the cure rateand the total effective rate showed significant differences(P<0.05).The conclusion:Jinger moxibustion has agood therapeutic effect for treating cervical vertigo,superior to that of the acupuncture treatment.     

Electroacupuncture Treatment for Constipation Due to Spasmodic Syndrome of the Pelvic Floor——A Report of 36 Cases

Warming Acupuncture for Treatment of Arteriosclerotic Obliteration of the Lower Limbs at Ischemic Stage——A Report of 98 Cases

Arteriosclerotic obliteration of the lower limbs is mostly seen in the senile male patients, which seriously affects the quality of their life. From 2002 to 2006, 98 cases of the disease were treated by the author using the warming acupuncture, with satisfactory therapeutic results reported in the following.     

The TCM Remedies for Treatment of AIDS——A Clinical Report of 60 Cases

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of TCM remedies in treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Method: 60 cases of AIDS or AIDS-related complex (ARC) were divided into four different TCM patterns and treated accordingly. Results: Of the 60 cases, 52 patients (86.7%) experienced remarkable improvement in general symptoms and lab findings, including virus loading and CD4 T lymphocyte count. Conclusion: The TCM remedies could definitely improve the symptoms and signs of AIDS or ARC, enhance the immune function, decrease the possibility of contracting opportunistic infection, improve the life quality, and prolong the survival period, with no apparent toxic and side effects.

Evaluation of the Medical Records System in an Upcoming Teaching Hospital—A Project for Improvisation

The medical records system of an upcoming teaching hospital in a developing nation was evaluated for its accessibility, completeness, physician satisfaction, presence of any lacunae, suggestion of necessary steps for improvisation and to emphasize the importance of Medical records system in education and research work. The salient aspects of the medical records department were evaluated based on a questionnaire which was evaluated by a team of 40 participants—30 doctors, 5 personnel from Medical Records Department and 5 from staff of Hospital administration. Most of the physicians (65%) were partly satisfied with the existing medical record system. 92.5% were of the opinion that upgradation of the present system is necessary. The need of the hour in the present teaching hospital is the implementation of a hospital-wide patient registration and medical records re-engineering process in the form of electronic medical records system and regular review by the audit commission.

A New Expert System for Diagnosis of Lung Cancer: GDA—LS_SVM

In nowadays, there are many various diseases, whose diagnosis is very hardly. Lung cancer is one of this type diseases. It begins in the lungs and spreads to other organs of human body. In this paper, an expert diagnostic system based on General Discriminant Analysis (GDA) and Least Square Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) Classifier for diagnosis of lung cancer. This expert diagnosis system is called as GDA-LS-SVM in rest of this paper. The GDA-LS-SVM expert diagnosis system has two stages. These are 1. Feature extraction and feature reduction stage and 2. Classification stage. In feature extraction and feature reduction stage, lung cancer dataset is obtained and dimension of this lung cancer dataset, which has 57 features, is reduced to eight features using Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GDA) method. Then, in classification stage, these reduced features are given to Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM) classifier. The lung cancer dataset used in this study was taken from the UCI machine learning database. The classification accuracy of this GDA-LS-SVM expert system was obtained about 96.875% from results of these experimental studies.     

A Survey on Acupuncture for Giving Up Heroin and Treatment of the Withdrawal Syndrome

This paper summarizes the study of acupuncture for giving up heroin and treatment of withdrawal syndrome in China from 1995 to 2003, which includes the selection of acupoints, the evaluation of the therapeutic effects, studies of acupoints and application of relevant instruments, as well as treatment of the withdrawal syndromes of heroin with acupuncture. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion is definite and indispensable, especially at the time when there is no specific remedy for heroin addition.
