High-fidelity simulation (HFS) operating room (OR) inter-professional team training improves healthcare students’ team-based attitudes and behaviours. Such improvements can diminish tribalism among the professions in the OR by overcoming entrenched perceptions of team members. We investigated whether simulation-based interprofessional student OR team training impacts students differently based on their professional background. From 2010 to 2013, HFS OR interprofessional student team training sessions were conducted involving senior medical students, senior undergraduate nursing students, and nurse anaesthesia students. The training involved a two-scenario format, each followed by a structured debriefing focusing on team-based competencies. Before and after each session, students completed a 15-item teamwork competencies self-efficacy survey as well as, from 2012–2013, the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). At the end of each session, they also completed a 6-item rating scale assessing overall team function during the session. Mean scores were calculated for each student professional group, post/pre mean differences were determined, and student t-test and ANOVA analyses were employed to compare within and between-group differences, respectively. Response rates were over 80% for each scale used. Medical students and undergraduate nursing students had significant improvements in team-based attitudes post- to pre-session. Medical students and nurse anaesthesia students had significant improvements in RIPLS scores. Statistically significant improvements from post- to pre-session were seen overall for both team-based attitudes (effect size = 0.83) and RIPLS (effect size = 0.37). The difference between the team-based scores between professions was significant; RIPLS differences were not. No significant difference existed between professions related to overall teamwork scores. HFS OR team training of healthcare students has beneficial but variable benefits for each professional group.  相似文献

Abstract

A previous survey distributed to medical school deans in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) showed positive attitudes toward collaborative practice and interprofessional education (IPE). This study aimed to clarify the present state of IPE and the attitudes of nursing school deans in the WPR. The modified Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS) and the modified Readiness of healthcare students for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) were used. Unexpectedly, the response rate was less than 20%. Deans of nursing schools with IPE courses showed significantly more positive attitudes than those of schools without IPE courses. The mean score of the modified ATHCTS and RIPLS of deans of nursing schools in rural areas were significantly higher than those in urban areas. Compared with medical schools, nursing schools in the WPR pay less attention to IPE and this may be one of the present characteristics of the region.  相似文献

Interprofessional education (IPE) involving an interactive and longitudinal clinic experience at an inner-city charitable clinic from September to May 2013/2014 was evaluated. Pre-, mid-, and post-intervention data were collected from students in 13 different professions including medicine (medical and physician assistant), dentistry (dental and dental hygiene), nursing (undergraduate and clinical nurse specialist), public health, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutritional sciences, speech and language pathology, and social work. To evaluate their interprofessional attitudes, students completed the TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T-TAQ) and Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). They also completed a unique measure, healthcare professionals circles diagrams (HPCDs), that indicated student conceptualisation of a healthcare team caring for a complex patient, along with perception of their team’s progress towards meeting patient goals. Results from the T-TAQ and RIPLS scores indicated small but significant increases from pre- to post-intervention (p = 0.005 and 0.012, respectively). Analysis of the HPCDs revealed significant increases in students’ perceptions of the types of interprofessional team members, relationships, and communication between professions to provide medical care to patients (p < 0.01). Most HPCDs included pharmacists, nurses, and physicians as part of the care team at all time points. Students significantly increased their inclusion of dentistry, public health, social work, and physician assistants as members of the healthcare team from pre- to post-intervention. Implications of our data indicated the importance of IPE interventions that include not only classroom-based sessions, but actual patient care experiences within interprofessional teams. It also reinforced the importance of new and unique methods to assess IPE.  相似文献

For the past more than 50 years, the World Health Organisation has acknowledged through empirical findings that health workers that learn together work together effectively to provide the best care for their patients. This study aimed to: (1) describe the perceived extent of interprofessional education (IPE) experience among Filipino occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), and speech-language-pathologists (SLPs); (2) identify their attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration (IPC); and (3) compare their attitudes towards IPC according to: prior IPE experience, classification of IPE experience, profession, years of practice, and practice setting. Using a cross-sectional survey design, a two-part questionnaire was sent to Filipino OTs, PTs, and SLPs working in the Philippines via an online survey application. The first part of the survey contained eight items of demographic information and the second part contained the 14-item Attitudes Towards Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS). Findings revealed that among the Filipino OT, PT and SLP respondents (n = 189), 70.9% had prior experience on IPE. Moreover, the three most commonly used IPE teaching-learning strategies were case discussion (clinical setting), small group discussion, didactics, and case discussion (community setting), while the use of didactics and case discussion (community setting) yielded more agreeable attitudes towards IPC. Among the 14 items in the ATHCTS, 11 were rated with agreeability and three items with neutrality. For professional variables, only the practice setting variable yielded a statistically significant finding confirming those working in the academia to be more agreeable towards IPC compared to other settings. However, years of practice and professional background variables both yielded no statistically significant difference implying no association between years of practice and attitude towards IPC and a homogenous composition among respondents, respectively. The results of this research are to springboard IPE initiatives within Philippine higher education institutions to enable evidence-based IPC approaches in clinical practice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important component of medical education, preparing students for the collaboration necessary for high-quality patient care. This study aimed to compare IPE readiness in pre-qualification physical therapy (PT) and medical (MD) students before and after an interprofessional workshop and identify factors influencing the workshop’s perceived educational value. In two consecutive years, students were surveyed with the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) following a four-hour, case-based workshop. During the second year, students were also surveyed before the workshop and answered open-ended questions about its educational value. PT and MD students had similar mean pre-workshop RIPLS scores (83.0, SD 5.3 vs. 80.7, SD 7.9; p = .27), but post-workshop scores were higher among PT students (86.3, SD 6.5 vs. 80.3, SD 8.8; p < .001). Qualitative thematic analysis of responses to open-ended questions revealed students valued IPE within the workshop. However, MD students in particular identified improvement opportunities in workshop delivery, timing, and content. These factors undermined the perceived educational value for MD students and may have contributed to their lower post-workshop RIPLS scores. This study suggests that a brief workshop can improve readiness for IPE among pre-professional students and highlights the importance of content, delivery, and timing to IPE success.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Best practices for delivering interprofessional education (IPE) continue to be debated. The objective of this study was to compare the longitudinal effects of two different methods of delivering IPE: a one-day IPE symposium (Symposium Only) vs. a one-day symposium plus a semester-long IPE course (Symposium + IPE). 40 Health Services Administration (HSA) and 57 Occupational Therapy (OT) students participated in this study. Participant attitudes in the Symposium Only group were compared to participant attitudes in the Symposium + IPE group using the Attitudes toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS). Participants completed the survey prior to the symposium (Time 1), immediately after the symposium (Time 2), and at least 18 months after the symposium (Time 3). A series of one-way repeated measures ANOVAs indicated that students in either the Symposium Only or Symposium +IPE group showed significantly better attitudes toward interprofessional teamwork at Time 2, and that these attitudes were maintained at Time 3. This was true for total ATHCTS, the Physician Centrality subscale, and Quality of Care/Process subscale. While the addition of the semester-long IPE course negatively impacted attitudes toward interprofessional teamwork in the short-term (at Time 2), it had no negative long-term impact at Time 3. Long-term, it appears that adding a semester-long course to a one-day symposium had no impact on attitude toward interprofessional teamwork.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It is essential that health professionals are trained to provide optimal care for our ageing population. Key to this is a positive attitude to older adults along with the ability to work in teams and provide interprofessional care. There is limited evidence on the impact an interprofessional education (IPE) placement in a residential aged care facility (RACF) has on students. In 2015 in Western Australia, 51 students (30% male, median age 23 years), from seven professions, undertook a placement between 2 and 13 weeks in length at 1 RACF. Pre- and post-placement measurements of attitudes to the elderly were collected using the Ageing Semantic Differential (ASD) questionnaire and level of readiness for interprofessional learning with the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). A total of 47 students completed matched ASD and RIPLS surveys. The mean total score on the ASD survey decreased significantly from pre- to post-placement from 116.0 to 108.9 (p = 0.033), indicating attitudes became increasingly positive towards older adults. Significant differences post-placement were seen indicating better readiness for interprofessional learning, for two out of four subscales on the RIPLS, namely “teamwork & collaboration” (42.1–44.0; (p = 0.000)) and “positive professional identity” (18.2–19.3 (p = 0.001)). The degree of change is similar to findings from other settings. The results support IPE-focussed student placements within RACF positively influence student’s attitudes towards the older adult as well as increase student’s readiness for interprofessional learning, confirming RACF are valuable places for training health professionals.  相似文献

Readiness for interprofessional education (IPE) can be an important factor to evaluate because of the influences of attitudes toward the outcomes of interprofessional learning activities. However, a dearth of Japanese evaluation tools hinders its evaluation. The readiness for interprofessional learning scale (RIPLS) was selected, because it has been validated in different countries and its items reflected our local situation best. This research aimed to develop and validate a Japanese version of the original 19-item RIPLS. We developed a Japanese RIPLS employing forward/backward translation. Reliability of the Japanese version was studied using classical test theory and structural equation modeling to construct a model to inform curriculum development. We obtained a 0.74 Cronbach's α, which indicates adequacy. Subscales of “interprofessional education opportunities” (α = 0.90) and “uniqueness of profession” (α = 0.60) have relatively little weight compared to “teamwork and collaboration” (α = 0.92). A one-way structure suggests that readiness for interprofessional learning starts with “teamwork & collaboration” followed by changes in “learning opportunities” and subsequently “uniqueness of profession” (root mean square error of approximation = 0.06, comparative fit index = 0.93). This Japanese RIPLS can be used in undergraduate health sciences students with appropriate caution. Further development of the subscales and a client-centered subscale would be beneficial to fully achieve its potential. The need for further research into its reliability and validity is identified. Recommendations are provided for cross-cultural adaptation and for establishing validity across different contexts.  相似文献

Changes in the scores of modified Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS) and those of modified Readiness of health care students for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) at the beginning and the end of the term were evaluated in the 2008 academic year. Two hundred and eighty-five respondents of a possible 364 completed the survey. In both the scales, the overall mean scores declined significantly after the lecture-style learning in the first-year students, while the scores improved significantly after the training-style learning in the third-year students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the modified ATHCTS was composed of three subscales, and the modified RIPLS two subscales. Analyses using regression factor scores revealed that the scores of “quality of care delivery” subscale in the modified ATHCTS and those of “expertise” subscale in the modified RIPLS declined significantly in the first-year students. Consequently, IPE programs may be introduced early in the undergraduate curriculum to prevent stereotyped perceptions for IPE, and comprehensive IPE curricula may result in profound changes in attitudes among participating students.  相似文献

Many health professions programmes have begun integrating interprofessional learning into their curricula; however, community-based interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives are relatively scarce. The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance IPE Faculty Collaborative, comprised of faculty from five institutions, developed a community-based IPE programme that allowed students to engage in meaningful interprofessional activities while exposing them to social determinants of health. Thirty students from ten professions were divided into six teams and paired with three community organisations. Each team engaged community organisation staff and clients to develop practical solutions to their priorities. Teams participated in debriefings and team-building exercises to further support interprofessional learning. Students’ comfort working with others (CWO), value in working with others (VWO), and self-perceived ability (SPA) to work with others were assessed using the Interprofessional Socialisation and Valuing Scale (ISVS). Mean rank scores in all three subcategories increased significantly from baseline (CWO: z = ?4.11, p < 0.0001; VWO: z = ?3.41. p = 0.001; SPA: z = ?2.79, p = 0.005). In addition, programme evaluations suggest the programme improved students’ understanding of social determinants of health. Our findings align with those of two other community-based IPE initiatives and support the expansion of IPE efforts beyond traditional settings.  相似文献

Abstract

Interprofessional learning activities, such as workshops allow students to learn from, with and about each other. This study assessed the impact on Indonesian health students’ attitudes towards interprofessional education (IPE) from participating in a workshop on medication safety. The students attended a two-day IPE workshop on medication safety. Thirty-five (48.6%) students completed pre-/post-workshop surveys using a modified Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) survey. The post-workshop survey also had a series of open-ended questions. Students’ responses to each RIPLS statement pre-/post-workshop were compared, whilst their responses to open-ended questions in post-workshop survey were thematically analysed. Students reported positive attitudinal changes on statements of shared learning and teamwork sub-scale (Wilcoxon p value <0.05). Analysis of the open-ended questions indicated that students perceived the workshop as having improved their understanding on the importance of teamwork and communication skills. This study found that learning with other health students through an IPE workshop improved medical, nursing and pharmacy students’ attitudes towards the importance of shared learning, teamwork and communication in healthcare service.  相似文献

In order to improve efficiency and collaboration in healthcare service provision, it is recommended that students engage in interprofessional education; that is, learning with, from and about professions other than one's own profession. Such endeavors are often impeded by pre-existing attitudes; therefore, self-reporting scales such as the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) have often been used in studies to gauge perspectives. The original 19-item version of the RIPLS was completed by 418 undergraduate healthcare students from a large Australian University. A principal component analysis with a varimax rotation was first carried out followed by Rasch model analyses on the RIPLS data. A four-factor solution was produced by the initial factor analysis, which did not correspond to the original three-factor solution identified by the RIPLS authors. The subsequent Rasch analyses of the four-factor structure produced two misfitting items, and reconfirmed a four-factor solution. The 17-item four-factor RIPLS demonstrated a good fit to the Rasch model and exhibited good reliability and dimensionality. A four-factor RIPLS solution was identified and confirmed via two statistical approaches. Two items were found not to fit the new RIPLS four-factor structure and it is recommended that they be discarded. Further refinement of the RIPLS is recommended.  相似文献

Informal workplace interprofessional learning occurs as health professionals interact with each other as part of everyday work practice. Participation in interprofessional team meetings is a practical way to foster learning. However, a gap exists in the availability of a reliable and valid instrument that adequately captures the nuances of informal workplace interprofessional learning in this setting. The purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire to measure the different components of interprofessional learning that contribute to the quality of interprofessional learning within the interprofessional team meeting. Questionnaire items were developed from a review of the literature and interviews with health professionals. Exploratory factor analysis was used to determine the underlying factor structure. Two hundred and eighty-five health professionals completed a 98-item questionnaire. After elimination of unreliable items, the remaining items (n = 41) loaded onto four factors named personal and professional capacity; turning words into action—“walk the talk”; the rhetoric of interprofessional learning—“talk the talk”; and inclusiveness. Internal consistency was high for all sub-scales (Cronbach’s alpha 0.91, 0.87, 0.83, and 0.83, respectively). Content, construct, and concurrent validity were assessed. The instrument developed in this study indicated consistency and robust psychometric properties. Future studies that further test the psychometric properties of the questionnaire will help to establish the usefulness of this measure in establishing evidence for the perceived effectiveness of interprofessional learning in a healthcare setting.  相似文献

Despite growing awareness of the benefits of interprofessional education and interprofessional collaboration (IPC), understanding how teams successfully transition to IPC is limited. Student exposure to interprofessional teams fosters the learners’ integration and application of classroom-based interprofessional theory to practice. A further benefit might be reinforcing the value of IPC to members of the mentoring team and strengthening their IPC. The research question for this study was: Does training in IPC and clinical team facilitation and mentorship of pre-licensure learners during interprofessional clinical placements improve the mentoring teams’ collaborative working relationships compared to control teams? Statistical analyses included repeated time analysis multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Teams on four clinical units participated in the project. Impact on intervention teams pre- versus post-interprofessional clinical placement was modest with only the Cost of Team score of the Attitudes Towards Healthcare Team Scale improving relative to controls (= 0.059) although reflective evaluations by intervention team members noted many perceived benefits of interprofessional clinical placements. The significantly higher group scores for control teams (geriatric and palliative care) on three of four subscales of the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale underscore our need to better understand the unique features within geriatric and palliative care settings that foster superior IPC and to recognise that the transition to IPC likely requires a more diverse intervention than the interprofessional clinical placement experience implemented in this study. More recently, it is encouraging to see the development of innovative tools that use an evidence-based, multi-dimensional approach to support teams in their transition to IPC.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the interprofessional socialisation experiences of health professional educators (HPEs) across five health science faculties in Perth, Australia. Evidence supported the importance of educators teaching and learning together, although there was minimal evidence with regard to the type of support HPEs received or required in order to socialise interprofessionally within higher education. Interview participants comprised 26 HPEs from various health-related professions across Western Australia. An interpretive phenomenological framework was used to discover the phenomena of interprofessional socialisation. The examination of the data was undertaken via qualitative content analysis with the aid of NVivo 10 software. Content coding led to the development of categories, sub-categories, and then themes. Five themes were identified; however, only one of these themes, “interprofessional socialisation strategies within higher education,” is explored within this article. Based on the data within this theme, 12 possible socialisation strategies (formal and informal) were identified for HPEs, which could be implemented within health science faculties, taking into account the organisation’s culture and strategic intent towards interprofessional collaboration and education.  相似文献

Abstract

The Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative recommends that future professionals be prepared for collaborative practice. To do so, it is necessary for them to learn about the principles of interprofessional collaboration. Therefore, to ascertain if students are predisposed, their attitude toward interprofessional learning must be assessed. In the French Canadian context such a measuring tool has not been published yet. The purpose of this study is to translate in French an adapted version of the RIPLS questionnaire and to validate it for use with undergraduate students from seven various health and social care programmes in a Canadian university. According to Vallerand’s methodology, a method for translating measuring instruments: (i) the forward–backward translation indicated that six items of the experimental French version of the RIPLS needed to be more specific; (ii) the experimental French version of the RIPLS seemed clear according to the pre-test assessing items clarity; (iii) evaluation of the content validity indicated that the experimental French version of the RIPLS presents good content validity and (iv) a very good internal consistency was obtained (α?=?0.90; n?=?141). Results indicate that the psychometric properties of the RIPLS in French are comparable to the English version, although a different factorial structure was found. The relevance of three of the 19 items on the RIPLS scale is questionable, resulting in a revised 16-item scale. Future research aimed at validating the translated French version of the RIPLS could also be conducted in another francophone cultural context.  相似文献

As a result of the complex nature of chronic heart failure (HF), these patients require an interprofessional team approach for care and treatment. This is because an interprofessional approach can manage resources more effectively and improve treatment efficacy. This research was done to evaluate the status of teamwork in caring for HF patients. In this cross-sectional study, the views of 308 members of the care team were collected through the use of Team Assessment Questionnaire (TAQ). The mean and standard deviation of teamwork was 2.4 ± 0.3. There was a significant difference between the teamwork status (total TAQ score) and age, gender and job experience (p < 0.05). The highest mean was for the team leadership dimension of the questionnaire (2.5 ± 0.5) while the lowest was for team foundation (2.4 ± 0.3). Results indicated that the status of teamwork is almost moderate. Teamwork in caring for HF patients was influenced by many factors, including age, gender, and job experience. Teamwork can be enhanced by establishing the equality of women and men’s rights, continuous training and attention to proportional age and gender combinations.  相似文献

Abstract

A case-based interprofessional education (IPE) ethics activity between pharmacy and dental students was developed and evaluated. Eighty-two third-year pharmacy and 51 first-year dental students were divided into teams for two sessions. The IPE activity involved the student teams analyzing two cases at each session utilizing an ethical decision-making process followed by debriefing of each case. Assessments included pre-/post-Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS), pre-/post-individual ethics knowledge quiz, pre-team ethics knowledge quiz and post-student perception survey. The results indicated no significant differences in RIPLS scores although scores indicated a high readiness for interprofessional learning including teamwork and collaboration among pharmacy and dental students. When comparing pre-/post-ethics knowledge quiz scores a significant difference was found between individual and team scores as well as between professions. Perception survey results were highly favorable toward the value of interprofessional learning activities. The sessions resulted in enhanced knowledge about ethical decision-making.  相似文献
