Abstract

There is increasing acknowledgement that interprofessional education (IPE) holds promise for preparing health professionals as collaborative-ready practitioners. The effects of IPE on learning outcomes are critical in determining the value of such programs. Attitudes are recognized as a significant element in developing behaviors. This study was designed to determine attitudes and perceptions of students toward collaborative learning in an interprofessional context. Three hundred and five students completed a questionnaire regarding attitudes and perceptions toward interprofessional collaboration before and after an introductory IPE course. Also 202 graduating health professional students without IPE completed the same questionnaire. The questionnaire included questions from the University of West England Interprofessional Questionnaire (UWE IQ) and Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). Independent samples t-tests revealed significant positive changes before and after the IPE course for UWEIQ IP-Learning subscale (p?=?0.012) and RIPLS (p?=?0.05). This study provides some evidence that students who participate in an introductory IPE course early in their professional preparation not only keep positive attitudes toward interprofessional learning, but improve them. As a result, they are expected to be more engaged in learning this important knowledge that should help them to become interprofessional collaborative-ready practitioners.  相似文献

Abstract

A previous survey distributed to medical school deans in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) showed positive attitudes toward collaborative practice and interprofessional education (IPE). This study aimed to clarify the present state of IPE and the attitudes of nursing school deans in the WPR. The modified Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS) and the modified Readiness of healthcare students for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) were used. Unexpectedly, the response rate was less than 20%. Deans of nursing schools with IPE courses showed significantly more positive attitudes than those of schools without IPE courses. The mean score of the modified ATHCTS and RIPLS of deans of nursing schools in rural areas were significantly higher than those in urban areas. Compared with medical schools, nursing schools in the WPR pay less attention to IPE and this may be one of the present characteristics of the region.  相似文献

This paper describes an innovative teaching strategy and opportunity to foster student resilience and enhance interprofessional collaboration among nursing and social work students, during a Study Abroad Interprofessional Education (IPE) Experience, using a reflective practice framework. This Study Abroad IPE Experience was an opportunity to capitalize on IPE teamwork, communication, and collaboration with the incorporation of reflective journaling as both an evaluative tool for students and faculty and as a mechanism for promoting self-awareness and enhanced mental wellbeing.  相似文献

Abstract

Health professional education programs increasingly incorporate interprofessional education (IPE) activities into curricula in response to evolving health policy and accreditation requirements in an effort to highlight the benefits of, and prepare students for, interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). As such, there is a need for statistically valid instruments designed to assess baseline student perceptions regarding IPE and IPCP. Using confirmatory factor analysis, this study compared the reliability and construct validity of a revised 21-item Attitudes Toward Health Care Teams (ATHCT-R) instrument and a 10-item Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised (SPICE-R) instrument. The instruments were concurrently administered online and completed by a total of 221 first year nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and health administration students. In this study, the SPICE-R exhibited better performance in terms of goodness of fit, construct validity, and reliability compared with the ATHCT-R. The SPICE-R instrument demonstrates promise as a parsimonious, valid, and reliable tool for measuring health professional students’ perceptions of IPE and IPCP.  相似文献

Abstract

The complexity of implementing interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) strategies that extend across the learning continuum requires that institutions create a structure to support effective and organized coordination among interested administrators, faculty and staff. The University of Virginia Center for Academic Strategic Partnerships for Interprofessional Research and Education (UVA Center for ASPIRE) was formally established in 2013 following five years of dramatic growth in interprofessional education at the School of Nursing, School of Medicine and the UVA Health System. This guide briefly describes the steps that led to the creation of the Center and the key lessons learned that can guide other institutions toward establishing their own IPE centers.  相似文献

Interprofessional health care teams have been shown to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors, among other benefits. Introducing interprofessional concepts to students in full day events is an established model that allows students to learn together. Our group developed an academic day for first-year students devoted to an introductory interprofessional education (IPE) experience, ‘IPE Day’. In total, 438 students representing medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and optometry gathered together, along with 25 facilitators, for IPE Day. Following the day’s program, students completed the evaluation consisting of the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey and open-ended questions. Narrative responses were analyzed for content and coded using the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative competency domains. Three hundred and eight evaluations were completed. Students reported increased self-ratings of competency across all 20 items (p < 0.05). Their comments were organized into the six domains: interprofessional communication, collaborative leadership, role clarification, patient-centred care, conflict resolution, and team functioning. Based on these findings, we suggest that this IPE activity may be useful for improving learner perceptions about their interprofessional collaborative practice competence.  相似文献

Interprofessional education for collaborative patient-centered practice has been identified as a key mechanism to address health care needs and priorities. Faculty development can play a unique role in promoting interprofessional education (IPE) by addressing some of the barriers to teaching and learning that exist at both the individual and the organizational level, and by providing individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to design and facilitate IPE. This article highlights a number of approaches and strategies that can facilitate IPE. In particular, it is recommended that faculty development initiatives aim to bring about change at the individual and the organizational level; target diverse stakeholders; address three main content areas, notably interprofessional education and collaborative patient-centred practice, teaching and learning, and leadership and organizational change; take place in a variety of settings, using diverse formats and educational strategies; model the principles and premises of interprofessional education and collaborative practice; incorporate principles of effective educational design; and consider the adoption of a dissemination model to implementation. Clearly, faculty members play a critical role in the teaching and learning of IPE and they must be prepared to meet this challenge.  相似文献

Nurses and other health professionals are required to demonstrate broad levels of expertise and service to ensure quality patient-centred health care. Interprofessional practice aligned with interprofessional education (IPE) has been promoted as a vehicle to promote broad levels of expertise. However, challenges remain for universities and other higher education institutions to successfully provide IPE opportunities for students. This paper presents perceptions of academic staff towards IPE from one Australian multi-campus health faculty. Perceptions were collected using interviews and two workshops. Findings are themed under the categories of faculty barriers, industry challenges and future opportunities. The perceptions of one health faculty regarding the fundamental factors required for IPE success were executive leadership of IPE, a supportive funding framework and an IPE based curricula. Nursing education can play a key role in embracing and leading future IPE approaches given that nurses are the numerically dominant health professional group and work collaboratively with other professionals to deliver patient-centred care.  相似文献

Abstract

Increasingly health professions schools and academic health centers are required to include interprofessional education (IPE) as a standard part of their core curricula to maintain accreditation. However, challenges continue to surface as faculty struggle to develop and participate in IPE activities while balancing increasing workloads and limited resources, and also trying to keep current in the changing profession-specific accreditation and standards. This guide shares lessons learned from developing and sustaining IPE activities at the University of Washington (UW) based in the United States. In 2008, the UW Schools of Nursing and Medicine were awarded funds to develop, implement, and evaluate an interprofessional program focused on team communication. This funding supported the creation of two annual large-scale IPE events, provided infrastructure support for the Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education, Research and Practice (CHSIERP), and supported numerous interprofessional activities and initiatives in the health professions curricula. Our experiences over the years have yielded several key lessons that are important to consider in any IPE effort. In this guide we report on these lessons learned and provide pragmatic suggestions for designing and implementing IPE in order to maximize long-term success.  相似文献

For the past more than 50 years, the World Health Organisation has acknowledged through empirical findings that health workers that learn together work together effectively to provide the best care for their patients. This study aimed to: (1) describe the perceived extent of interprofessional education (IPE) experience among Filipino occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), and speech-language-pathologists (SLPs); (2) identify their attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration (IPC); and (3) compare their attitudes towards IPC according to: prior IPE experience, classification of IPE experience, profession, years of practice, and practice setting. Using a cross-sectional survey design, a two-part questionnaire was sent to Filipino OTs, PTs, and SLPs working in the Philippines via an online survey application. The first part of the survey contained eight items of demographic information and the second part contained the 14-item Attitudes Towards Health Care Teams Scale (ATHCTS). Findings revealed that among the Filipino OT, PT and SLP respondents (n = 189), 70.9% had prior experience on IPE. Moreover, the three most commonly used IPE teaching-learning strategies were case discussion (clinical setting), small group discussion, didactics, and case discussion (community setting), while the use of didactics and case discussion (community setting) yielded more agreeable attitudes towards IPC. Among the 14 items in the ATHCTS, 11 were rated with agreeability and three items with neutrality. For professional variables, only the practice setting variable yielded a statistically significant finding confirming those working in the academia to be more agreeable towards IPC compared to other settings. However, years of practice and professional background variables both yielded no statistically significant difference implying no association between years of practice and attitude towards IPC and a homogenous composition among respondents, respectively. The results of this research are to springboard IPE initiatives within Philippine higher education institutions to enable evidence-based IPC approaches in clinical practice.  相似文献

Two hundred and eighty-five respondents of a possible 364 completed the survey. In both the scales, the overall mean scores declined significantly after the lecture-style learning in the first-year students, while the scores improved significantly after the training-style learning in the third-year students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the modified ATHCTS was composed of three subscales, and the modified RIPLS two subscales. Analyses using regression factor scores revealed that the scores of “quality of care delivery” subscale in the modified ATHCTS and those of “expertise” subscale in the modified RIPLS declined significantly in the first-year students. Consequently, IPE programs may be introduced early in the undergraduate curriculum to prevent stereotyped perceptions for IPE, and comprehensive IPE curricula may result in profound changes in attitudes among participating students.  相似文献

Problem: Although interprofessional practice is important for improving healthcare delivery, there is little evidence describing interprofessional education (IPE) outcomes beyond changes in attitudes and knowledge of prelicensure learners. More rigorous evaluation of early IPE is needed to determine its impact on teaching interprofessional collaborative practice and providing a solid foundation for applying collaborative skills in the clinical environment. Intervention: First-year students (N = 679) in 7 health professions programs participated in a 4-session series focusing on professional roles and responsibilities, teams and teamwork, and the healthcare system. Interprofessional teams of 5–6 students, from at least 3 professions, were assembled for the duration of the series and created a team charter during their first session to guide their work. Each subsequent session included a brief lecture and interactive exercises. Faculty facilitators from the participating programs provided support to students during the sessions. As a culminating project, each team created a short video depicting a barrier to interprofessional collaboration. Students evaluated the performance of their team members using a web-based peer assessment survey. A course evaluation with an embedded validated attitudinal scale was used to assess changes in student perceptions about IPE. A sample of videos were also scored by 2 faculty using a rubric linked to course expectations. Context: This educational offering took place on the health sciences campus of a large, mid-Atlantic research university with more than 3,200 clinical learners in schools of allied health professions, dentistry, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy. It was the first interprofessional activity for most of the learners. Outcome: There were 555 students who participated in some or all of the sessions. Comments indicated that students enjoyed interacting with their peers and prefer activities allowing them to apply content to their profession over lectures. The assessment measures revealed a disconnect between student ratings targeting interprofessional socialization and faculty ratings targeting the products of their teamwork. Although students provided positive feedback to their teammates through peer assessment, and the attitudinal scale showed a small but significant increase in positive attitudes toward IPE, the videos they created did not demonstrate a deep understanding of barriers to interprofessional practice. Lessons Learned: This large-scale IPE activity for early learners supported progress toward interprofessional socialization, but student learning was inconsistently demonstrated in teamwork products. Course planners should augment self- and peer-reported interprofessional socialization measures with faculty-generated behavioral outcome assessments. Such triangulation produces a more robust data set to inform decisions about curricular revisions and development.  相似文献

The introduction of a transformative technology into practice settings can affect the functioning of interprofessional teams, placing stress on interprofessional relationships, thus slowing adoption and change. This study explored the potential of an interprofessional education (IPE) approach to mediate this stress and facilitate the adoption of a transformative technology- Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). Oncologists, physicists, and therapists in radiation medicine who attended an interprofessional IGRT Education Course were interviewed about perceived benefits and stressors to IPE and to interprofessional practice (IPP) in the IGRT context. A modified grounded theory approach was used to conduct 14 interviews, with 200 minutes of interview time recorded. In introducing IGRT, participants noted interprofessional stress in understanding and adopting new technology. IPE offered common terminology, appreciation for others' knowledge, and a holistic framework for practice. Outcomes were thought to foster collaboration, efficiency, and improved professional role definition. Time constraints and power relations were noted to be residual stressors exacerbated by IPE, but were thought to be transient. IPE can thus be of benefit in the implementation of transformative technologies such as IGRT, through mediation of interprofessional stress inherent in change. Interprofessional knowledge, collaboration, and efficiency in practice facilitate the development and adoption of a new practice model.  相似文献

Abstract

Teamwork and collaboration have been recognized as essential competencies for health care providers in the field of maternity care. Health care policy and regulatory bodies have stressed the importance of Interprofessional Education (IPE) for learners in this field; however, there is little evidence of sustained application of pre-qualifying IPE to the realm of interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in practice following qualification. The aim of this research was to understand how newly qualified midwives applied their IPE training to professional practice. A purposive sample of midwifery students, educators, new midwives and Heads of Midwifery from four universities in the United Kingdom participated in semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and focus groups. Qualitative, grounded theory methodology was used to develop the emerging theory. Newly qualified midwives appeared better able to integrate their IPE training into practice when IPE occurred in a favourable learning environment that facilitated acquisition and application of IPE skills and that recognized the importance of shared partnership between the university and the clinical workplace.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Recognizing the public health professional are critical members of interprofessional teams, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) recently added a required Masters of Public Health (MPH) student competency focused on interprofessional education (IPE). A student-centered approach to the design and evaluation of an emergency preparedness-focused curricular program to meet the interprofessional needs of MPH students was used to meet this expectation at the University of Washington. Curriculum design was informed by two 80-minute listening sessions with MPH students to better understand their current interprofessional educational experiences and needs, and how an emergency preparedness-focused two-hour Interprofessional Active Learning Series (iPALS) session could help them develop interprofessional competency. The resultant iPALS session was assessed with a short, paper-based questionnaire. We found MPH students have an interest in participating in IPE, and that all students who participated in the emergency preparedness-focused iPALS session reported significant increases in their interprofessional and disaster response abilities based on their pre- and post-session evaluations. Student-centered IPE curriculum focused on emergency preparedness can enhance the self-reported ability of students across the health sciences to perform on interprofessional teams while engaging in a topic that has relevance to MPH students.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Longitudinal evaluation of interprofessional programming is necessary to understand the impact of interprofessional education (IPE) for collaborative practice. Attitude is one measure of intended behavior. The Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) was developed as an improved measure to examine the readiness for interprofessional education and collaborative practice. As a means to pilot a protocol for a longitudinal comprehensive evaluation of an interprofessional program with 13 health professional programs in 6 health science faculties, the IPAS was administered over a 3-year period to three cohorts of students. The results of the IPAS indicated no significant differences detected across the 3 years. Although there was a significant difference on the Patient Centredness subscale for Cohorts 2 and 3 the effect size was small. Previous experience in an interprofessional course was a predictor of more positive patient centeredness attitudes, but other IPE experience and years of education were not predictors of any interprofessional attitudes. Students from the Medicine & Dentistry (M&D) faculty ranked significantly lower on the teamwork roles and responsibilities subscale compared to the other faculties, except Rehabilitation Medicine (RM). However, once the outliers in RM were removed, there was a significant difference on this subscale between RM and M&D. This paper outlines the challenges with using the IPAS as part of a comprehensive program evaluation and identifies issues with longitudinal data collection for evaluation with large student cohorts.  相似文献

Abstract

Health sciences educators are faced with creating meaningful, effective and satisfying experiences in interprofessional education (IPE) and cultural competence (CC) required of both students and professionals in practice. This study evaluated the experience and attitudes of the participants in a course combining IPE and CC. A novel, interprofessional course in the Russian language and culture was developed and delivered to a group of medical, nursing, and pharmacy students. One year after the completion of the course, an anonymous, online survey was sent to the participants. Attitudes, comfort, self-efficacy in working with other cultures/healthcare professionals, and comparison of the course to other IPE activities were assessed. The survey suggested that the course was a satisfying and effective combination of IPE and CC in a pre-professional health educational setting. Further work could be undertaken to evaluate the experiences of similar activities in the professional and continuing education arenas.  相似文献
