Action on RRSPs remains at top of CMA's priority list in 1995, board decides

Potential changes to registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) regulations “continue to generate a huge amount of concern” among physicians, the Board of Directors was told at its December meeting. That anxiety explains why the RRSP issue and related lobbying will remain at the top of the CMA's priority list in 1995. The other major topic of concern during the 3-day meeting was the federal government's proposed gun-control legislation. If doctors are going to have a responsibility to report patients whose ownership of firearms may make them a danger to themselves or others, the CMA wants to ensure that physicians who make such reports are protected under the law.

Concerns about increasing use of ambulatory care raised at QMA annual meeting.

Quebec Health Minister Dr. Jean Rochon is pushing for a regionalized health care system that favours ambulatory care, day surgery and home care over hospital admissions and acute care in hospital. The Quebec Medical Association is concerned these changes will lower the quality of care in the province.

Cholescintigraphy with N-substituted iminodiacetic acid (HIDA) labelled with technetium-99m is a new noninvasive technique for evaluation of the hepatobiliary system. The significance of nonvisualization of the gallbladder by this method in comparison with standard radiologic examinations was studied. In 43 healthy subjects the gallbladder was visualized by the two methods. By contrast, all 27 patients in whom the gallbladder was not visualized by cholescintigraphy had cholecystitis. When visualization failed to occur, a repeat cholescintigraphic study after an injection of cholecystokinin demonstrated the status of the cystic duct. Visualization excludes cystic duct obstruction and acute cholecystitis, whereas persistent nonvisualization indicates cystic duct obstruction.
