PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of different storage periods in artificial saliva and thermal cycling on Knoop hardness of 8 commercial brands of resin denture teeth.MethodsEigth different brands of resin denture teeth were evaluated (Artplus group, Biolux group, Biotone IPN group, Myerson group, SR Orthosit group, Trilux group, Trubyte Biotone group, and Vipi Dent Plus group). Twenty-four teeth of each brand had their occlusal surfaces ground flat and were embedded in autopolymerized acrylic resin. After polishing, the teeth were submitted to different conditions: (1) immersion in distilled water at 37 ± 2 °C for 48 ± 2 h (control); (2) storage in artificial saliva at 37 ± 2 °C for 15, 30 and 60 days, and (3) thermal cycling between 5 and 55 °C with 30-s dwell times for 5000 cycles. Knoop hardness test was performed after each condition. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = .05).ResultsIn general, SR Orthosit group presented the highest statistically significant Knoop hardness value while Myerson group exhibited the smallest statistically significant mean (P < .05) in the control period, after thermal cycling, and after all storage periods. The Knoop hardness means obtained before thermal cycling procedure (20.34 ± 4.45 KHN) were statistically higher than those reached after thermal cycling (19.77 ± 4.13 KHN). All brands of resin denture teeth were significantly softened after storage period in artificial saliva.ConclusionStorage in saliva and thermal cycling significantly reduced the Knoop hardness of the resin denture teeth. SR Orthosit denture teeth showed the highest Knoop hardness values regardless the condition tested.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of decontamination and clinical exposure on the elastic moduli, hardness and surface roughness of two frequently used orthodontic archwires, namely 0.020 in. × 0.020 in. heat activated (martensitic active) nickel titanium archwires and 0.019 in. × 0.025 in. austenitic stainless steel archwires.MethodThis study was a prospective clinical trial in which 20 consecutive patients requiring an archwire change as part of their course of orthodontic fixed appliance therapy, had either a nickel titanium or stainless steel archwire fitted as deemed clinically necessary. The effect of clinical use was determined by comparing distal end cuts of the “as received” archwires before and after decontamination, with the same retrieved archwires following clinical use and decontamination. Hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness were determined using an atomic force microscope (AFM) coupled with a nanoindenter.ResultsThe results showed that the decontamination regimen and clinical use had no statistically significant effect on the nickel titanium archwires, but did have a statistically significant effect on the steel archwires. Decontamination of the steel wires significantly increased the observed surface hardness (p = 0.01) and reduced the surface roughness (p = 0.02). Clinical use demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the observed elastic modulus (p < 0.001) and a decrease in surface roughness (p = 0.001).SignificanceAt present it is difficult to predict the clinical significance of these statistically significant changes in archwire properties on orthodontic tooth movement.  相似文献

ObjectivesInformation regarding the effects of orthodontic bracket debonding on zirconia restorations, and the preferred method for residual adhesive removal from the zirconia restoration surface is lacking. Thus, this study aimed to assess the effects of different methods of residual adhesive removal after orthodontic bracket debonding on flexural strength, surface roughness, and phase transformation of high-translucent (HT) zirconia.Materials and methodsThis in vitro study evaluated 72 bar-shaped HT zirconia specimens; 18 specimens were assigned to the control group. Metal brackets were bonded to the remaining specimens by resin cement. After bracket debonding, the residual adhesive on the surface of specimens was removed by three methods (n = 18): a 30-flute tungsten-carbide (TC) bur at low speed, an ultrafine diamond bur at high speed, and Er:YAG laser irradiation. The surface roughness (Ra and Rz) was measured. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out, and the flexural strength was measured as well. Data were statistically analyzed (α = 0.05).ResultsBefore polishing, all methods increased the Ra and Rz values (P < 0.05) except for the diamond bur yielding a Rz value comparable to that of the control group. The Ra values of the test groups were comparable after polishing, and still higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The flexural strength of all three test groups was comparable (P > 0.05), and significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.001). The monoclinic phase was not observed in any group.ConclusionsOrthodontic bracket debonding adversely affects the surface roughness and flexural strength of zirconia despite polishing.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was evaluate, for the first time, the impact of incorporation of nanostructured silver vanadate (β-AgVO3) in antibiofilm and mechanical properties of dental acrylic resins (poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA).DesignThe β-AgVO3 was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, and microanalysis (SEM/EDS). Resins specimens were prepared with 0–10% wt.% β-AgVO3 and characterized by SEM, XRD and optical microscopy. The antibiofim activity of the samples against Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans was investigated by XTT reduction test, colony-forming units (CFUs), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The flexural strength, hardness, and surface roughness of the samples containing β-AgVO3 were compared with the pure PMMA matrix.ResultsThe incorporation of 10% β-AgVO3 significantly reduced the metabolic activity of C. albicans and S. mutans (p < 0.05). There was a reduction in microbial load (CFU/mL) of microorganisms for the different concentrations used (p < 0.05), which was confirmed by confocal microscopy. The addition of β-AgVO3 did not change the mechanical properties of hardness and surface roughness of the resins (p > 0.05). However, flexural strength decreased with the addition of amounts greater than 1% (p < 0.05).Conclusionsβ-AgVO3 additions in dental acrylic resin may have an impact on inhibition of biofilm of main microorganisms associated with dental prostheses. However, the viability of clinical use should be evaluated in function of changed promoted in some mechanical properties.  相似文献

ObjectivesThis randomised clinical trial assessed how biofilm development and composition is affected by time and denture material type in denture wearers with and without denture stomatitis.MethodsSpecimens of acrylic resin (control) and denture liners (silicone-based or acrylic resin based, depending on the experimental phase) were inserted into the surface intaglio of 30 denture wearers. Biofilm was formed in two phases of 21 days, and counts of viable micro-organisms in the accumulating biofilm were determined after 7, 14 and 21days of biofilm formation. Data were analysed by three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test to assess differences among health condition (healthy or with denture stomatitis), materials and time point.ResultsNon-albicans Candida species counts were higher in diseased patients with silicone-based denture liners (p = 0.01). Denture stomatitis patients showed higher mutans streptococci counts after 7 days (p = 0.0041).ConclusionsLonger biofilm formation time periods did not result in differences on biofilm composition. The denture liners evaluated in this study accumulate greater amount of biofilm, and therefore their use should be carefully planned.Clinical significanceThe silicone-based denture liner tested should be used cautiously in patients with denture stomatitis as it showed increased non-albicans species counts, known to be difficult to treat.  相似文献

PurposeThis study aimed to measure the color change, surface roughness and flexural strength of heat-polymerized acrylic resin after its immersion in denture cleansers, simulating a 180-day use.MethodsThirty disk-shaped (15 mm × 4 mm) and 30 rectangular samples (65 mm × 10 mm × 3.3 mm) were prepared from heat-polymerized acrylic resin and immersed in Corega Tabs, Bony Plus, and distilled water. Color measurements (ΔE) were determined by a portable colorimeter. A surface analyzer was used to measure the roughness before and after immersion (ΔRa). The flexural strength (S) was measured using a 3-point bending test. The ΔE values were submitted to statistical analysis by the Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by Dunn's Multiple Comparisons test. The ΔRa and S values were submitted to statistical analysis by ANOVA, followed by a Student–Newman–Keuls test (α = .05).ResultsThe color changes were significantly higher for the Corega Tabs than for the control group. The mean ΔE values quantified by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) were classified as Trace (0.0–0.5). The Bony Plus group had significantly higher surface roughness than the other groups. Corega Tabs and Bony Plus groups presented lower flexural strength than the control group.ConclusionsAlthough the color changes after the immersion in denture cleansers were clinically insignificant, the Corega Tabs group showed higher color differences. The Bony Plus group showed significantly increased surface roughness. Both effervescent tablets Corega Tabs and Bony Plus significantly diminished the flexural strength of the acrylic resin.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine in vivo the initial bacterial adhesion on titanium implants with different surface treatments.DesignTen subjects wore oral splints containing machined pure titanium disks (Ti-M), acid-etched titanium (Ti-AE) and anodized and laser irradiated disks (Ti-AL) for 24 h. After this period, disks were removed from the splints and adherent bacteria were quantified by an enzymatic assay to assess total viable bacteria and by Real Time PCR to evaluate total bacteria and Streptococcus oralis levels. Additionally, the initial adherent microorganisms were visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Titanium surface morphology was verified using SEM, and roughness was evaluated by profilometer analysis.ResultsRegarding titanium surface roughness, Ti-AL (1.423 ± 0.397) showed significantly higher Ra values than did Ti-M (0.771 ± 0.182) and Ti-AE (0.735 ± 0.196) (p < 0.05, ANOVA – Tahame). Ti-AE and Ti-AL presented roughened micro-structure surfaces characterized by open pores, whereas Ti-M showed long grooves alternating with planed areas. Comparing the Ti-M, Ti-AE and Ti-AL groups for viable bacteria (MTT assay), total bacteria and S. oralis quantification (qPCR), no significant differences were observed among these three groups (p > 0.05, ANOVA – Tahame). SEM images showed similar bacterial adhesion on the three titanium surfaces, predominantly characterized by cocci and several bacilli, indicating an initial colonization of the oral biofilm.ConclusionIn conclusion, roughness and microtopography did not stimulate initial biofilm formation on titanium surfaces with different surface treatments.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo evaluate the effect of the bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide either activated or not by a 970 nm diode laser on the chemical stability and dentin surface morphology of intracoronary dentin.MethodsTwenty-seven slabs of intracoronary dentin specimens (3 × 3 mm) were distributed into three groups (n = 9), according to surface treatment: HP – 35% hydrogen peroxide (1 × 4’), DL – 970 nm diode laser (1 × 30”/0,8W/10 Hz), HP + DL – 35% HP activated with 970 nm diode laser (1 × 30”/0,8W/10 Hz leaving the gel in contact to the surface for 4′ after activation). Three Raman spectra from each fragment were obtained to calculate the mean intensity of peaks of inorganic component (a.u.), organic collagen content (a.u.), and the ratio of inorganic/organic content, before and after treatment. Analyses of the samples by confocal laser microscopy were performed to evaluate the surface roughness, percentage of tubules, perimeter and area percentage of tubules, before and after treatment. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn’s, and Wilcoxon test (P < 0.05).ResultsData analysis showed that HP + DL did not change the inorganic content peaks 8.31 [29.78] or the inorganic/organic ratio 3.37 [14.67] (P > 0.05). Similarly, DL did not affect the chemical stability of the dentin surface (P > 0.05). However, HP significantly increased inorganic content peaks 10.87 [22.62], as well as the inorganic/organic ratio 6.25 [27.78] (P < 0.05). Regarding the morphological alterations, all surface treatments increase tubules exposure; HP treatment significantly increases perimeter and area percentage; and HP + DL increases surface roughness.ConclusionsBleaching HP combined with DL offers an improvement in terms of intracoronal dentin surface protection, yielding better maintenance of dentin chemical stability and morphology.  相似文献

ObjectiveCandida-associated denture stomatitis is the most prevalent form of oral candida infections among the denture wearers. Generally, antiseptic oral rinses used in the treatment of these infections are considered as an adjunct or alternative antifungal treatment. Studies have suggested that the intraoral concentrations of antiseptics decrease substantially to the sub-therapeutic levels on account of the dynamics of the oral cavity. This condition yields the question about the minimum antiseptic concentration that effect the character or pathogenesis of Candida during treatment. The extracellular phospholipase and proteinase enzymes of Candida albicans are regarded to have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of human fungal infections. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different sub-therapeutic concentrations of chlorhexidine gluconate, hexetidine and triclosan on the production of these enzymes by C. albicans strains isolated from 20 patients with denture stomatitis.MethodsPhospholipase test was done by using Sabouraud dextrose agar with egg yolk, proteinase test was done by using bovine serum albumin agar.MethodsPhospholipase test was done by using Sabouraud dextrose agar with egg yolk, proteinase test was done by using bovine serum albumin agar.ResultsExoenzyme production of 20 strains which were brief exposured to sub-therapeutic concentrations of three antiseptic agents decreased significantly compared with the strains that were not exposured with antiseptic values (p < 0.05). There was significant difference between the sub-therapeutic concentrations of each of three antiseptics (p < 0.05). When the same concentrations of each antiseptic was compared, there were no significant differences between enzymatic activities (p > 0.05).ConclusionsThe results of this study show that sub-therapeutic levels of each antiseptic may modulate candidal exoenzyme production, consequently suppressing pathogenicity of C. albicans.  相似文献

PurposeThis randomised cross-over trial aimed to comparatively investigate patient preference and satisfaction with thermoplastic resin removable partial dentures (TR-RPDs) and conventional metal clasp-retained removable partial dentures (MC-RPDs).MethodsTwenty-eight partially dentate subjects were enrolled and randomised to receive MC-RPDs followed by TR-RPDs or vice versa (n = 14, each group). The subjects were asked to score overall satisfaction and denture-related parameters 3 months after delivery of each denture. Additionally, they were asked to choose their preferred denture type at the end of the trial.ResultsOf the 28 subjects, 24 (86%; mean age, 67.3 years) completed the trial. The overall satisfaction scores and ratings for oral appearance with TR-RPDs were significantly higher than those with MC-RPDs (P < 0.05). Moreover, 75% (18/24) and 83% (20/24) of the subjects reported greater overall satisfaction and better oral appearance with TR-RPDs than with MC-RPDs (P < 0.001, both). Scores for mucosal pain and food impaction were significantly better with TR-RPDs than with MC-RPDs (P < 0.05). Relative to MC-RPDs, TR-RPDs provided slightly better oral comfort and speech, although the differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Scores for chewing ability, denture stability, and ease of denture cleaning were almost identical for both types of dentures.ConclusionsThese results suggest that TR-RPDs hold an advantage over MC-RPDs in terms of oral appearance and can offer greater satisfaction than MC-RPDs in partially dentate arches with at least an occluding pair in the posterior region.Clinical trial registrationUMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000007310).  相似文献

PurposeTo investigate the effects of using a low-cost powered toothbrush for cleaning on dental prostheses made of heat polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA.MethodsHeat cured PMMA specimens beam with the dimensions of 45.0 mm × 6.5 mm × 4.5 mm were fabricated. The specimens were kept in water storage at 37 °C constant temperature for 0, 1, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days and randomly assigned for testing or control. Test specimens underwent brushing by using a powered toothbrush at an applied force of 2.00 N for 22 min with water as medium. Surface roughness measurement (Ra), flexural strength and efficacy of brushing to remove coated Candida albicans biofilm were investigated.ResultsThe results of the mean surface roughness value and the flexural strength were analysed by using two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test at 5% significance level. In general, the specimens showed no significant changes in flexural strength after brushing. However, the flexural strength and the surface roughness value were significantly lower in specimens group after 7 days in water storage compared to the control. SEM micrographs of post-brushed specimens revealed satisfactory removal of C. albicans biofilm.ConclusionA low-cost powered toothbrush together with a liquid medium successfully removed C. albicans biofilm on dental acrylic PMMA-based prostheses, without compromising the mechanical properties.  相似文献

PurposeSeveral thermoplastic denture base resins have been introduced for the fabrication of non-metal clasp dentures. Although the surface of these materials is easily damaged, the surface roughness and characteristics of scratches created have not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of thermoplastic resins using a scratch test for the development of future materials.MethodsFour thermoplastic (polyamide: Valplast®; VLP and Lucitone FRS®; FRS, polyethylene terephthalate: EstheShot®; ES, and polyester: EstheShot Bright®; ESB) and two conventional acrylic (Heat-polymerizing: Urban®; HC, and Pour type auto-polymerizing: Pro-Cast DSP®; PR) denture base resins were examined. Eight specimens, approximately 10 mm × 10 mm × 30 mm in size, of each material were fabricated. Scratch test was performed by a scratch tester with a diamond indenter of 10-μm radius and cone angle 90°, applying a constant load of 500 mN, and 2-mm-long scratches were made. The scratch marks were studied under 3D laser measuring microscope and cross-section profiles at approximately 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm from the starting point were extracted and measured with analysis software. Data from 24 cross-section profiles in each denture base material were analyzed.ResultsThe maximum depths of ES, ESB and FRS were greater than VLP, PR and HC, and the scratch widths of ES, ESB, FRS and VPL were greater than PR and HC.ConclusionsThe results showed that the surface of thermoplastic denture base resins was easily damaged compared to polymethyl methacrylate.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to compare the susceptibility of one novel silorane-based and four widely used conventional methacrylate-based resin composites to adhere oral streptococci and to relate any differences to surface roughness, hydrophobicity and type of matrix.MethodsSpecimens of restoratives Filtek Silorane, Filtek Z250, Tetric EvoCeram, Quixfil and Spectrum TPH were prepared (10.0-mm diameter, 2.0-mm height). Surface roughness was assessed by perthometer measurements and hydrophobicity according to water contact angles was determined by computerized image analysis. Bacterial suspensions of Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus mutans were incubated for 2.5 h at 37 °C with 15 test specimens for each material and adhesion was quantified with fluorescence dye Alamar Blue/Resazurin and an automated multi-detection reader. Glass served as reference. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney U-test (α = 0.05).ResultsMedian roughness values of all composites ranged between 0.04 and 0.11 μm, median contact angles between 59.7° and 92.1°. Significantly lowest fluorescence intensities of all test materials were found on Filtek Silorane for three of four streptococcal strains. The fluorescence intensities of the four conventional methacrylate resin composites were significantly higher and comparable among each other.SignificanceWhen compared against four conventional methacrylate composite resins, a general significance to a lower quantity of adhering streptococci was found on the novel silorane-based composite resin, which might result from its increased hydrophobicity. The low adhesion potential of the silorane-based composite may potentially improve the longevity of direct fillings and reduce recurrent caries.  相似文献

PurposeTo characterize the effect of two processing techniques (pressing and CAD/CAM — Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Machining) of lithium-disilicate (LD) based crowns on the microstructure, topography, roughness, fractal dimension, internal and marginal adaptation.MethodsOne-hundred identical preparations for monolithic crowns were made with dentin analogue material (G10 epoxy resin). One of the preparations was scanned and a monolithic crown in lithium-disilicate was planned in the CAD system. Fifty crowns were milled in a wax pattern and subjected to pressing (IPS e.max Press), while 50 crowns were machined at CAD/CAM (IPS e.max CAD) and posteriorly crystallized. Internal and marginal adaptation were assessed via replica technique at four manufacturing moments (Milled wax pattern; LDPRESS; Milled LDCAD; Crystallized LDCAD) and considering 5 regions (margin, cervico-axial angle, axial wall, axial-occlusal angle and occlusal wall). Complementary analysis considering microstructure and topography, roughness and fractal dimension were performed in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).ResultsThe processing technique resulted in different ceramic microstructure, topography, roughness and fractal dimension, whereas CAD/CAM lead to smoother, more homogeneous but more complex topography features (higher fractal dimension) in comparison to the pressing technique (P < 0.05). Regarding marginal and internal fit, LDPRESS crowns showed to be more adapted at the margin, while LDCAD were more adapted at the occluso-axial angle; other regions were not statistically different (α = 0.05).ConclusionsCAD/CAM and the pressing techniques for manufacturing LD crowns lead to completely different ceramic surface characteristics and affect crown adaptation at the margin and at occluso-axial angle.  相似文献

PurposeThe present study was conducted to identify how changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) affect the sensory perception and activity of the brain in complete denture wearers using an electroencephalogram (EEG).MethodsSubjects were 21 individuals wearing complete dentures who regularly visited the Division of Prosthodontics at Tsurumi University Dental Hospital for checkups (12 males and 9 females, average age: 76.6). Based on their original dentures, two duplicate dentures with different VDO (−3 mm and +5 mm) were fabricated. EEG activity and occlusal force were measured before and after gum chewing with each denture in all subjects. Negative indicator scores for psychological conditions and stable neuronal activity () were calculated using EEG data. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test to compare changes in the sensory perception, activity of the brain, and occlusal force (α = 0.05).ResultsAfter gum chewing with the +5-mm denture, a significant increase was observed in the negative indicator score (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found in the values before and after gum chewing with any of the dentures (p > 0.05). A significant decrease was observed in the occlusal force between the original denture and the −3-mm denture (p < 0.05).ConclusionPsychological condition and occlusal force were influenced by immediate changes in the VDO of the complete denture.  相似文献

PurposeTo evaluate the influence of different metallic flask systems for acrylic resin denture processing on tooth displacement and framework misfit of mandibular fixed implant-supported complete dentures.MethodsStandard mandibular implant-supported complete dentures in five implants were waxed and randomly assigned to three groups: G1 – conventional flask, G2 – double flask, and G3 – occlusion flask. Framework misfit in all the implants and the linear distances between teeth (I-I – incisor-to-incisor; P-P – premolar-to-premolar; M-M – molar-to-molar; RI-RM – right-incisor-to-right-molar; and LI-LM – left-incisor-to-left-molar) were measured before and after denture processing using an optical microscope. Dentures were processed by hot water curing cycle (9 h/74 °C). Collected data were analyzed by paired Student's t-test and one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05).ResultsAll the measured distances presented changes in tooth displacement after denture processing. However, the M-M distance for G1 (p = 0.003) and the P-P (p = 0.042) and LI-LM (p = 0.044) distances for G3 showed statistically significant differences. Differences between the flask systems were not statistically significant. Statistically significant differences in the framework misfit due to denture processing were found for all the implants and groups, with the exception of right median implant for G2 and right distal implant for G3. A comparison of the flask systems found statistically significant differences in which G1 presented an increase in the misfit values and G2 and G3 a decrease.ConclusionsDifferent flask systems did not cause significant changes in tooth displacement. Frameworks misfit values were influenced by the different flask systems. The conventional flask presented an increase in the framework misfit, while the experimental flasks showed a decrease.  相似文献

ObjectiveFor long-term stability the adhering interfaces of an implant-retained supraconstruction of titanium/carbon–graphite fiber-reinforced (CGFR) polymer/opaquer layer/denture base polymer/denture teeth must function as a unity. The aim was to evaluate adhesion of CGFR polymer to a titanium surface or CGFR polymer to two different opaquer layers/with two denture base polymers.Materials and methodsTitanium plates were surface-treated and silanized and combined with a bolt of CGFR polymer or denture base polymer (Probase Hot). Heat-polymerized plates of CGFR polymer (47 wt% fiber) based on poly(methyl methacrylate) and a copolymer matrix were treated with an opaquer (Sinfony or Ropak) before a denture base polymer bolt was attached (Probase Hot or Lucitone 199). All specimens were heat-polymerized, water saturated (200 days) and thermally cycled (5000 cycles, 5/55 °C) before shear bond testing.ResultsSilicatized titanium surfaces gave higher bond strength to CGFR polymer (16.2 ± 2.34 and 18.6 ± 1.32) MPa and cohesive fracture than a sandblasted surface (5.9 ± 2.11) MPa where the fracture was adhesive. The opaquer Sinfony gave higher adhesion values and mainly cohesive fractures than the opaquer Ropak. Statement of the problemThe effect of long-term water immersion on the shear bond strength between denture base resin and Triad visible-light-polymerized (VLP) direct hard reline resin is not known.PurposeThe aim of this study was to investigate the bonding characteristics of Triad VLP direct hard reline resin to heat-polymerized denture base resin subjected to long-term water immersion.Material and methodsNinety circular disks, 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, of denture base resin were polymerized from a gypsum mold. Sixty specimens were subjected to water immersion and 30 were stored at ambient room temperature for 4 months. Thirty water-immersed specimens were dried with gauze (group 1), while the other 30 water-immersed specimens were dried with a hair dryer (group 2). The dry specimens (n = 30) represented the control group (group 3). All specimens were air abraded and painted with bonding agent before packing Triad VLP direct hard-reline resin. Specimens in each group were subjected to thermal cycling for 50,000 cycles between 4 °C and 60 °C water baths with 1-min dwell time at each temperature. The bond strength at which the bond failed under stress was recorded using a universal testing machine. One-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc comparison were applied to find significant differences between groups (α = 0.05).ResultsSignificant differences in mean shear bond strength among the specimens existed because of variable water content in the denture base resin (P < 0.05). Group 3 (dry) was higher than group 2 (desiccated), and the lowest was group 1 (saturated).ConclusionThe shear bond strength of Triad VLP direct hard reline resin to denture base resin depended on the water content in the denture base resin. The dry denture base resin demonstrated superior bond strength compared with the desiccated and water-saturated denture base resins.  相似文献

BackgroundDentures with antimicrobial properties are desirable for preventing Candida albicans adhesion. This study was to assess the effectiveness of bioactive glass (BAG) on C. albicans adhesion, surface roughness, and hardness of denture base materials.MethodsHeat-polymerized (HP) and autopolymerized (AP) acrylic resins were used to fabricate 240 disk specimens (120/material, 60/C. albicans, 60/surface roughness and hardness). Specimens were divided into five groups (n = 10) based on the BAG concentration: 0.5, 1.5, 3, 5, and 7.5 wt% of the acrylic powder, with a control group comprised of unmodified specimens. Direct culture method was used to assess C. albicans adhesion. A profilometer and Vickers hardness test were used to measure surface roughness and hardness respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey’s test were used for data analysis (α = 0.05).ResultsBAG addition significantly decreased the C. albicans count when compared with the control group (P < 0.001) for both HP and AP. Regarding surface roughness, there was no change in the HP acrylic resins (P > 0.05), while the AP acrylic resins exhibited significantly higher surface roughness with BAG addition (P < 0.001). The hardness of the HP and AP acrylic resins were significantly higher with the addition of BAG (P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe addition of BAG to HP and AP acrylic resins effectively decreases C. albicans adhesion. The roughness of AP acrylic resins increases with the addition of BAG, while the hardness of both HP and AP acrylic resins increase with the addition of BAG.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo analyze differences in the way dental materials digitize on a non-contacting laser profilometer (NCLP).MethodsThree Type IV dental stones and 15 impression materials were mixed according to the manufacturer's instructions and expressed against a glass block to record its surface characteristics. From each material an area of 6 × 40 mm was scanned on the NCLP and the Ra, Rq and Rt roughness values measured from 20 randomly selected transverse profiles. The surface of the impression materials was subsequently poured in Moonstone? (Bracon Ltd., Etchingham, England) dental stone and the same roughness values obtained from these casts. Differences in roughness values from the dental materials were compared using ANOVA and differences in roughness between impression materials and the Moonstone? casts compared using paired t-tests.ResultsThere were significant differences in roughness values between individual materials within each type (impression material or dental stone) (p < 0.05). The roughness of the dental stones varied between Ra = 0.87 and 0.99 μm, Rq = 1.09 and 1.23 μm, and Rt = 5.70 and 6.51 μm. The roughness values of the impression materials varied between Ra = 0.75 and 4.56 μm; Rq = 0.95 and 6.27 μm and Rt = 4.70 and 39.31 μm. Darker materials showed higher roughness values compared to lighter materials (p < 0.05). The roughness of the Moonstone? casts varied between Ra = 0.80 and 0.98 μm; Rq = 1.01 and 1.22 μm, and Rt = 5.04 and 6.38 μm. Roughness values of some impression materials were statistically significantly lower when the surface was reproduced in Moonstone?
