Experimental studies have shown that tea and tea polyphenols have anti-carcinogenic properties against breast cancer. A number of epidemiologic studies, both case-control and cohort in design, have examined the possible association between tea intake and breast cancer development in humans. This meta-analysis included 13 papers which examined populations in eight countries and provided data on consumption of either green tea or black tea, or both in relation to breast cancer risk. Summary odds ratios (ORs) for highest versus non/lowest tea consumption level were calculated based on fixed and random effects models. Heterogeneity between studies was examined via the Q statistics. For green tea, the combined results from the four studies indicated a reduced risk of breast cancer for highest versus non/lowest intake (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.61-0.98). For black tea, conflicting results were observed in case-control versus cohort studies. The combined results from the eight case-control studies showed a minor inverse association between black tea consumption and risk of breast cancer (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.84-0.98). This inverse association was stronger in hospital-based (OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.50-1.19) than population-based case-control studies (OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.81-1.09). Five cohort studies demonstrated a modest increase in risk associated with black tea intake (OR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.02-1.31). The results of this meta-analysis indicate a lower risk for breast cancer with green tea consumption. Available data suggest a possible late-stage, promotional effect of black tea on breast carcinogenesis.  相似文献

Purpose

Tea is one of the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. To date, observational data from prospective cohort studies investigating the relationship between green and black tea intake and prostate cancer risk are sparse and equivocal. In a population-based, prospective cohort study of Chinese men in Singapore, we investigated the relationship between green and black tea intake and prostate cancer risk.

Methods

Tea consumption data for 27,293 men were collected at baseline (between 1993 and 1998) using a validated food frequency questionnaire. After an average of 11.2?years of follow-up, 298 men had developed prostate cancer. Proportional hazards regression methods were used to assess the associations between tea intake and prostate cancer risk.

Results

There was no association between daily green tea intake and prostate cancer risk, compared with no green tea intake [hazard ratio (HR)?=?1.08; 95?% confidence interval (CI) 0.79, 1.47]. For black tea, a statistically significant positive association and trend were observed for daily intake compared with no black tea intake (HR?=?1.41, 95?% CI 1.03, 1.92; p for trend <0.01)

Conclusions

Few prospective data are available from populations that have both a high level and wide range of black and green tea intake; this study represents a unique opportunity to evaluate their individual effects on prostate cancer risk. Our findings support the notion that green tea intake does not protect against prostate cancer and that black tea intake may increase prostate cancer risk.  相似文献

Experimental studies have supported tea as a chemopreventive agent for colorectal cancer. No quantitative summary of the epidemiologic evidence on tea and colorectal cancer risk has ever been performed. The current meta-analysis included 25 papers conducted in 11 countries across three continents (North America, Asia and Europe). Summary odds ratios (ORs) for highest versus non/lowest tea consumption levels were calculated based on fixed and random effects models. The meta-regression and stratified methods were used to examine heterogeneity across studies. For green tea, the combined results from eight studies indicated a reduced risk of colorectal cancer with intake [summary OR = 0.82, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.69-0.98]. The protective effect is mainly found among the three case-control studies of colon cancer (summary OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.60-0.93). Results from studies of rectal cancer irrespective of study design (case-control versus cohort) (summary OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.71-1.37) and cohort studies of colon cancer (summary OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.79-1.24) were compatible with the null hypothesis. For black tea, the summary OR derived from 20 studies was 0.99 (95% CI = 0.87-1.13). There is wide divergence in results across the 20 individual studies; formal tests for homogeneity across studies revealed statistically significant differences in findings across all studies (P < 0.001), amongst the 7 cohort studies (P = 0.002), and amongst the 13 case-control studies (P < 0.001). Despite the strong evidence from in vitro and non-human in vivo studies in support of green and black tea as potential chemopreventive agents against colorectal cancer, available epidemiologic data are insufficient to conclude that either tea type may protect against colorectal cancer in humans.  相似文献

Tea and its constituents have demonstrated anticarcinogenic activity in both in vitro and in vivo animal studies. Results from epidemiologic studies, however, have been inconsistent. Some factors that coexist with tea consumption, such as cigarette smoking, may confound or modify the association between tea consumption and cancer risk. The objective of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the association between green tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk in a population-based prospective cohort study, the Shanghai Men's Health Study. The analysis included 60,567 Chinese men aged 40-74 years at baseline. During ~5 years of follow-up, 243 incident cases of colorectal cancer were identified. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing colorectal cancer. Regular green tea consumption (ever drank green tea at least three times per week for more than six consecutive months) was associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer in non-smokers (multivariable-adjusted HR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.34-0.86). The risk decreased as the amount of green tea consumption increased (P(trend) = 0.01). Each 2 g increment of intake of dry green tea leaves per day (approximately equivalent to the amount of tea in a tea bag) was associated with a 12% reduction in risk (HR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.78-0.99). No significant association was found among smokers (HR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.66-1.34). This study suggests that regular consumption of green tea may reduce colorectal cancer risk among non-smokers.  相似文献

The tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been reported to act as a cancer preventive agent through folate pathway inhibition in experimental studies. We hypothesized that if folate pathway inhibition is the mechanism of cancer preventive activities of EGCG, then the protective effect against breast cancer would be stronger among women with low dietary folate intake and the high-activity methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and thymidylate synthase (TYMS) genotypes. In a nested case-control study of 380 women with incident breast cancer and 662 controls within the Singapore Chinese Health Study, we found no association between either green tea intake or gene polymorphisms of MTHFR (C677T and A1298C) and TYMS (1494 ins/del) and breast cancer risk. However, among women with low folate intake (<133.4 microg/day), weekly/daily green tea intake was inversely associated with breast cancer risk compared with less green tea intake [odds ratio (OR) = 0.45, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.26-0.79, P for interaction = 0.02]. Among women with high folate intake (>or=133.4 microg/day), green tea intake was not associated with breast cancer. Similarly, among women possessing the high-activity MTHFR/TYMS genotypes (0-1 variant allele), weekly/daily versus less frequent green tea intake was associated with lower breast cancer risk (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.45-0.98), which was observed even more strongly among those who also had low folate intake (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.22-0.89) than high folate intake (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.55-1.54). This association was not observed among women possessing the low-activity genotypes (2-4 variant alleles). Our findings suggest that folate pathway inhibition may be one mechanism through which green tea protects against breast cancer in humans.  相似文献

The relation between consumption of coffee, tea and caffeine and risk of breast cancer remains unsettled. We examined data from a large, long-term cohort study to evaluate whether high intake of coffee and caffeine is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. This was a prospective cohort study with 85,987 female participants in the Nurses' Health Study. Consumption of coffee, tea and caffeine consumption was assessed in 1980, 1984, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and the follow-up continued through 2002. We documented 5,272 cases of invasive breast cancer during 1,715,230 person-years. The multivariate relative risks (RRs) of breast cancer across categories of caffeinated coffee consumption were: 1.0 for <1 cup/month (reference category), 1.01 (95% confidence interval: 0.92-1.12) for 1 month to 4.9 week, 0.92 (0.84-1.01) for 5 week to 1.9 days, 0.93 (0.85-1.02) for 2-3.9 days, 0.92 (0.82-1.03) for >or=4 cups per day (p for trend = 0.14). Intakes of tea and decaffeinated coffee were also not significantly associated with risk of breast cancer. RRs (95% CI) for increasing quintiles of caffeine intake were 1.00, 0.98 (0.90-1.07), 0.92 (0.84-1.00), 0.94 (0.87-1.03) and 0.93 (0.85-1.01) (p for trend = 0.06). A significant inverse association of caffeine intake with breast cancers was observed among postmenopausal women; for the highest quintile of intake compared to the lowest RR 0.88 (95% CI = 0.79-0.97, p for trend = 0.03). We observed no substantial association between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee and tea consumption and risk of breast cancer in the overall cohort. However, our results suggested a weak inverse association between caffeine-containing beverages and risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.  相似文献

This meta-analysis investigated the quantitative association between the consumption of green tea and the risk of stomach cancer in epidemiologic studies using crude data and adjusted data. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Review in August 2007. All the articles searched were independently reviewed and selected by 3 evaluators according to predetermined criteria. A total of 13 epidemiologic studies were included. When all the case-control and cohort studies were pooled, the odds ratios (OR) [corrected] of stomach cancer for the highest level of green tea consumption when compared with the lowest level of consumption were shown to be 1.10 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.92-1.32) using the crude data and 0.82 (95% CI, 0.70-0.96) using the adjusted data.In the meta-analyses of case-control studies, no significant association was seen between green tea consumption and stomach cancer using the crude data (odds ratio (OR), 0.79; 95% CI, 0.58-1.07) [corrected], but green tea was shown to have a preventive effect on stomach cancer using the adjusted data (OR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.64-0.83) [corrected]. In the meta-analyses of the recent cohort studies, the highest green tea consumption was shown to significantly increase stomach cancer risk using the crude data (RR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.16-2.18), but no significant association between them was seen when using the adjusted data (RR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.93-1.17). Unlike the case-control studies, no preventive effect on stomach cancer was seen for the highest green tea consumption in the meta-analysis of the recent cohort studies. Green tea and risk of breast cancer in Asian Americans   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
There is substantial in vitro and in vivo evidence implicating tea polyphenols as chemopreventive agents against various cancers. However, epidemiologic data obtained from mainly Western populations are not supportive of a protective role of tea, mainly black tea, in the etiology of breast cancer. Much less is known about the relationship between green tea and breast cancer risk. During 1995-1998, we conducted a population-based, case-control study of breast cancer among Chinese, Japanese and Filipino women in Los Angeles County and successfully interviewed 501 breast cancer patients and 594 control subjects. Detailed information on menstrual and reproductive factors; dietary habits, including intake of black and green tea; and other lifestyle factors was collected. Risk of breast cancer was not related to black tea consumption. In contrast, green tea drinkers showed a significantly reduced risk of breast cancer, and this was maintained after adjusting for age, specific Asian ethnicity, birthplace, age at menarche, parity, menopausal status, use of menopausal hormones, body size and intake of total calories and black tea. Compared to women who did not drink green tea regularly (i.e., less than once a month), there was a significant trend of decreasing risk with increasing amount of green tea intake, adjusted odds ratios being 1.00, 0.71 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.51-0.99) and 0.53 (95% CI 0.35-0.78), respectively, in association with no, 0-85.7 and >85.7 ml of green tea per day. The significant inverse association between risk of breast cancer and green tea intake remained after further adjustment for other potential confounders, including smoking; alcohol, coffee and black tea intake; family history of breast cancer; physical activity; and intake of soy and dark green vegetables. While both green tea and soy intake had significant, independent protective effects on breast cancer risk, the benefit of green tea was primarily observed among subjects who were low soy consumers. Similarly, the protective effect of soy was primarily observed among subjects who were nondrinkers of green tea. In summary, our results point to an important role of both green tea and soy intake in relation to breast cancer risk in Asian-American women.  相似文献

We prospectively examined the association between coffee consumption and the risk of developing colorectal cancer in a large population-based cohort study (the JPHC Study) of Japanese men and women. Data were analyzed from a population-based cohort of 96,162 subjects (46,023 men and 50,139 women). A total of 1,163 incident colorectal cancers were identified during the follow-up period, including 763 cases of colon cancer and 400 of rectal cancer. We observed a significant inverse association between coffee consumption and the risk of developing invasive colon cancer among women. Compared with those who almost never consumed coffee, women who regularly consumed 3 or more cups of coffee per day had a RR of 0.44 (95% CI = 0.19-1.04; p for trend = 0.04) after adjustment for potential confounding factors. However, no significant association was found for rectal cancer in women. In men, no significant decrease was observed in any colorectal cancer site. Further, additional analyses on the association of green tea consumption with colorectal cancer risk found no significant association in men or women. These findings suggest that coffee consumption may lower the risk of colon cancer among Japanese women.  相似文献

Black tea consumption and cancer risk: a prospective study   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
In a prospective cohort study, men of Japanese ancestry were clinically examined from 1965 to 1968. For 7,833 of these men, data on black tea consumption habits were recorded. Since 1965, newly diagnosed cancer incidence cases have been identified: 152 colon, 151 lung, 149 prostate, 136 stomach, 76 rectum, 57 bladder, 30 pancreas, 25 liver, 12 kidney and 163 at other (miscellaneous) sites. Compared to almost-never drinkers, men habitually drinking black tea more than once/day had an increased relative risk (RR) for rectal cancer (RR = 4.2). This positive association (P = 0.0007) could not be accounted for by age or alcohol intake. We also observed a weaker but significant negative association of black tea intake and prostate cancer incidence (P = 0.020). There were no significant associations between black tea consumption and cancer at any other site.  相似文献

Objective: Calcium, vitamin D, and dairy product intake may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. We therefore examined the association between these factors and risk of colorectal cancer in a large prospective cohort of United States men and women. Methods: Participants in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort completed a detailed questionnaire on diet, medical history, and lifestyle in 1992–93. After excluding participants with a history of cancer or incomplete dietary information, 60,866 men and 66,883 women remained for analysis. During follow-up through 31 August 1997 we documented 421 and 262 cases of incident colorectal cancers among men and women, respectively. Multivariate-adjusted rate ratios (RR) were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Total calcium intake (from diet and supplements) was associated with marginally lower colorectal cancer risk in men and women (RR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.67–1.12, highest vs lowest quintiles, p trend = 0.02). The association was strongest for calcium from supplements (RR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.49–0.96 for 500 mg/day vs none). Total vitamin D intake (from diet and multivitamins) was also inversely associated with risk of colorectal cancer, particularly among men (RR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.51–0.98, p trend = 0.02). Dairy product intake was not related to overall risk. Conclusions: Our results support the hypothesis that calcium modestly reduces risk of colorectal cancer. Vitamin D was associated with reduced risk of colorectal cancer only in men.  相似文献

A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and a Westernized diet have been implicated in the aetiology of both colorectal cancer and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, leading to the hypothesis that hyperinsulinaemia may promote colorectal cancer. We prospectively examined the association between colorectal cancer risk and factors related to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, including BMI, physical activity, diabetes mellitus, and blood glucose, in a cohort of 75 219 Norwegian men and women. Information on incident cases of colorectal cancer was made available from the Norwegian Cancer Registry. Reported P values are two-sided. During 12 years of follow up, 730 cases of colorectal cancer were registered. In men, but not in women, we found a negative association with leisure-time physical activity (P for trend = 0.002), with an age-adjusted RR for the highest versus the lowest category of activity of 0.54 (95% CI = 0.37-0.79). Women, but not men, with a history of diabetes were at increased risk of colorectal cancer (age-adjusted RR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.04-2.31), as were women with non-fasting blood glucose > or = 8.0 mmol l(-1)(age-adjusted RR = 1.98; 95% CI = 1.31-2.98) compared with glucose <8.0 mmol l(-1). Overall, we found no association between BMI and risk of colorectal cancer. Additional adjustment including each of the main variables, marital status, and educational attainment did not materially change the results. We conclude that the inverse association between leisure-time physical activity and colorectal cancer in men, and the positive association between diabetes, blood glucose, and colorectal cancer in women, at least in part, support the hypothesis that insulin may act as a tumour promoter in colorectal carcinogenesis.  相似文献

Studies investigating the association of green tea and black tea consumption with lung cancer risk have reported inconsistent findings. To provide a quantitative assessment of this association, we conducted a meta-analysis on the topic. Studies were identified by a literature search in PubMed from 1966 to November 2008 and by searching the reference lists of relevant studies. Summary relative risk (RR) estimates and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated based on random-effects model. Our meta-analysis included 22 studies provided data on consumption of green tea or black tea, or both related to lung cancer risk. For green tea, the summary RR indicated a borderline significant association between highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of lung cancer (RR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.61–1.00). Furthermore, an increase in green tea consumption of two cups/day was associated with an 18% decreased risk of developing lung cancer (RR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.71–0.96). For black tea, no statistically significant association was observe through the meta-analysis (highest versus non/lowest, RR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.70–1.05; an increment of two cups/day, RR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.65–1.03). In conclusion, our data suggest that high or an increase in consumption of green tea but not black tea may be related to the reduction of lung cancer risk.  相似文献

N-nitroso compounds are potent carcinogens detected in foodstuffs. The importance of dietary nitrosamines in relation to human cancer development is, however, uncertain. We studied the relationship between intake of nitrates, nitrites and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and risk of cancers of the gastro-intestinal tract in a cohort of 9,985 adult Finnish men and women. During a follow-up period of up to 24 years, 189 gastro-intestinal cancer cases were diagnosed in the cohort, initially free from cancer. Intake of nitrate, nitrite and NDMA were estimated, based on food-consumption data from a 1-year dietary history interview covering the total diet of the participants. A significant positive association was observed between intake of NDMA and subsequent occurrence of colorectal cancer with a relative risk (RR) between the highest and lowest quartiles of intake of 2.12 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-4.33]. Of various sources of N-nitroso compounds, intake of smoked and salted fish was significantly (RR = 2.58, 95% CI 1.21-5.51) and intake of cured meat was non-significantly (RR = 1.84, 95% CI 0.98-3.47) associated with risk of colorectal cancer. No similar association was observed for intake of other fish or other meat. No significant associations were observed between NDMA intake and cancers of the head and neck combined or of the stomach or between nitrate or nitrite intake and risk of cancers of the gastro-intestinal tract. Our results are in line with the idea that N-nitroso compounds can induce colorectal cancer in humans.  相似文献

A comparative case-control study of colorectal cancer and adenoma   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
We conducted a comparative case-control study of colorectal cancer and adenoma involving 221 cases with colorectal cancer, 525 cases with colorectal adenoma and 578 neighborhood controls. Daily vegetables intake was associated with lower risks of distal colon adenoma (relative risks (RR) = 0.59, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.39-0.89) and rectal cancer (RR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.25-0.84). Daily beans intake was associated with lower risk of colon adenoma (RR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37-0.91 for the proximal colon and RR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.45-0.88 for the distal colon) and daily intake of seaweeds was associated with lower risk of rectal cancer (RR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.22-0.82). Daily intake of fish and shellfish also showed an inverse association with the risk of colon adenoma (RR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.45-0.99 for the proximal colon and RR = 0.70, 0.52-0.94 for the distal colon). Generally, intakes of animal or vegetable fat-rich foods, especially meats, were associated with decreases in risks of both adenoma and cancer, though the association of cancer was not statistically significant. Other than dietary factors, daily alcohol drinking was associated with an increased risk of adenoma in the proximal colon (RR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.15-3.29) and ex-drinkers showed higher risks for colon adenoma and colorectal cancer. Sports or occupational activities and coffee drinking were inversely associated and family history of colorectal cancer was positively associated with the risk of both colorectal adenoma and cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Green tea is widely used by women for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The authors aimed to determine the efficacy of green tea ingestion on the risk of breast cancer development and the risk of breast cancer recurrence. METHODS: The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses of observational studies from systematic searches of 8 electronic data sources and contact with authors. They included studies assessing breast cancer incidence and recurrence. RESULTS: Results: The pooled relative risk (RR) of developing breast cancer for the highest levels of green tea consumption in cohort studies was 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.71-1.1; P= .28; I(2)= 0%), and in case control studies, the odds ratio was 0.44 (95% CI, 0.14-1.31; P= .14; I(2)= 47%). The pooled RR of cohort studies for breast cancer recurrence in all stages was 0.75 (95% CI, 0.47-1.19; P= .22; I(2)= 37%). A subgroup analysis of recurrence in stage I and II disease showed a pooled RR in cohort studies of 0.56 (95% CI, 0.38-0.83; P= .004; I2= 0%). Dose-response relationships were evident in only 3 of the 7 studies. CONCLUSION: To date, the epidemiological data indicates that consumption of 5 or more cups of green tea a day shows a non-statistically significant trend towards the prevention of breast cancer development. Evidence indicates that green tea consumption may possibly help prevent breast cancer recurrence in early stage (I and II) cancers. However, conclusions as to the potential therapeutic application of green tea are currently impossible to make due to the small number of studies conducted, the lack of any clinical trial evidence, the lack of a consistent dose-response relationship, and the potential for interaction with standard care.  相似文献

Known risk factors account for about 10–15% of breast cancer incidence suggesting that lifestyle exposures are crucial in its etiology. Previous epidemiological studies on the association between coffee and tea consumption and breast cancer risk have been inconsistent. We investigated the association of coffee and tea consumption with the risk of breast cancer among women in EPIC-NL cohort, a population-based prospective cohort in Netherlands with 27,323 participants. Exposure was measured by a validated food frequency questionnaire, and the outcome was verified by direct linkage with the Netherlands Cancer Registry. A total of 681 invasive primary breast cancers were diagnosed in 9.6 years of follow-up. Coffee intake increased the risk of breast cancer by more than twofold as compared to non-consumers (HR; 2.25, 95% CI; 1.30–3.90). This association did not hold after multivariate adjustment which resulted in a HR of 1.17, 95% CI; 0.65–2.12. After adjustment to breast cancer risk factors and lifestyle, no association was observed between intake of coffee or tea and risk of breast cancer across all categories of intake. These results were also not altered by body mass index (BMI). Coffee and tea consumption does not seem to be related to the risk of breast cancer in women.  相似文献

The incidence of colorectal cancer is highest in populations that consume an energy-dense diet, have low intakes of vegetables and fruit, or lead a sedentary lifestyle. These factors may influence colorectal carcinogenesis via insulin pathways. We examined whether diabetes mellitus was associated with colorectal cancer in Singapore Chinese, whose body type and lifestyle profiles are distinct from those of Western populations. Between April 1993 and December 1998, 63,257 Singapore Chinese men and women aged 45 to 74 years were enrolled in a prospective study of diet and cancer. Each subject provided dietary, medical, and lifestyle information through an in-person interview. As of December 31, 2002, 636 incident colorectal cancer cases had been diagnosed. A history of physician-diagnosed diabetes was statistically significantly associated with colorectal cancer risk in both men (relative risk [RR] = 1.5, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2 to 2.1) and women (RR = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.0 to 1.9). In stratified analyses, this association remained statistically significant among the subset of diabetics with high total calorie intake and low physical activity levels. Our results support the hypothesis that hyperinsulinemia may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis, even in a relatively lean population.  相似文献

Limited amount of evidence suggests that high intake of flavonoids could be associated with decreased risk of lung and colorectal cancer, but more studies are needed. In this prospective cohort study, we assessed the relation between the intakes of 26 flavonoids from 5 subclasses; flavonols, flavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols and anthocyanidins, and the risk of lung, prostate and colorectal cancer. The study population consisted of 2,590 middle-aged eastern Finnish men of the prospective population-based Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) Study. The mean intake of flavonoids was 131.0 +/- 214.7 mg/day. During the mean follow-up time of 16.2 years, 62 lung, 138 prostate, and 55 colorectal cancers occurred. All lung cancer cases occurred among either current smokers (n = 50) or previous smokers (n = 12). After adjustment for age, examination years, body mass index, smoking status, pack-years of smoking, physical activity and intakes of alcohol, total fat, saturated fat, fiber, vitamin C and E, relative risk (RR) for lung cancer was 0.27 (95% CI: 0.11-0.66) for the highest quarter of total flavonoid intake as compared with the lowest quarter. Out of 5 flavonoid subclasses, flavonols and flavan-3-ols were associated with lung cancer, for the highest quarter of intake the RR were 0.29 (95% CI: 0.11-0.78) and 0.24 (95% CI: 0.09-0.64), respectively. No association between flavonoid intake and risk of prostate or colorectal cancer were found. We conclude that high intake of flavonoids is associated with decreased risk of lung cancer in middle-aged Finnish smoking men.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To study the association between waist circumference and colorectal cancer, and whether it is independent of body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Between 1997 and 2005, 953 incident colorectal cancer cases (546 men and 407 women) were identified among 95,151 participants (44,068 men and 51,083 women) from the Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort. RESULTS: Waist circumference was associated with increased colorectal cancer incidence in both men (multivariable adjusted rate ratio (RR) 1.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12-2.53 for waist circumference > or =120 cm compared to <95 cm, p trend = 0.006) and women (RR 1.75, 95% CI 1.20-2.54 for > or =110 compared to <85 cm, p trend = 0.003). High levels of BMI were also associated with increased risk. After adjustment for BMI, waist circumference remained associated with a nonstatistically significant increase in colorectal cancer incidence in both men (RR 1.41, 95% CI 0.81-2.45 for > or =120 compared to <95 cm, p trend = 0.10) and women (RR 1.48, 95% CI 0.89-2.48 for > or =110 compared to <85 cm, p trend = 0.13). CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that waist circumference is associated with increased colorectal cancer incidence, possibly partially independent of BMI.  相似文献
