Objective: Our study aimed at evaluating ocular findings and structural changes in coal mine workers who were chronically exposed to coal mine dust and diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.

Methods: Ocular findings of 161 eyes of 81 patients diagnosed with pneumoconiosis who had previously worked or are currently working in coal mines were analyzed. Forty-six coal mine workers and sex matched healthy people (n?=?20) participated in the study. Workers who had early changes of pneumoconiosis were included in Group 1 (n?=?17), workers diagnosed with pneumoconiosis were included in Group 2 (n?=?29), and healthy subjects were included in Group 3 (n?=?20). Outcome measures were the difference in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, choroidal thickness (CT), central macular thickness (CMT) and tear function tests between the groups.

Results: RNFL thickness values in Group 1 and 2 were lower than in Group 3, the control group, in all quadrants except the temporal quadrant. However, there was no statistically significant difference in peripapillary RNFL thickness values in any quadrants among the three groups (p?>?0.05). Central subfoveal choroidal thickness and CMT measurements were thinner in Group 1 and 2 than in the control group. However, this difference among groups was not statistically significant (p?>?0.05). Mean schirmer's test result was 8.8?±?1.6?mm in group 1, 7.1?±?1.8?mm in Group 2 and 11.5?±?3.6?mm in the control group. Mean tear break up time (BUT) test result was 7.1?±?1.3?seconds (sec) in Group 1, 6.5?±?1.8?sec in Group 2 and 10.4?±?2.9?s in the control group. The Schirmer's test and BUT test results were both statistically significantly lower in coal mine workers (Group 1 and 2) compared to the control group. Group 1 and Group 2 did not show statistically significant difference in terms of Schirmer's test and BUT test results.

Discussion: The association between pneumoconiosis and coal mine dust contiguity is thought to be due to the effect of coal dust by producing chronic inflammation. In addition, there are several trace elements in coal dust which are toxic to vital tissues. In this study, ocular findings suggest that systemic levels of trace elements and chronic inflammation may not reach to a level that influences ocular structures. Nonetheless, tear functions seem to be affected in coal mine workers.

Conclusion: This study suggests that the systemic effect of coal mine dust in ocular structures is not evident. However, direct contact with coal mine and fume leads to a decrease in tear function tests.  相似文献

Context: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) increases the risk of decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). However, whether calcitrol improves this situation is unknown.

Objective: The current study investigates the effects of calcitriol on BMD in patients with esomeprazole therapy.

Materials and methods: Three hundred and eighty-six participants with gastrointestinal ulcerations were enrolled and randomly assigned into controlled and supplemented groups. Participants in the controlled group were prescribed esomeprazole (20?mg/qd), while the supplemented group was prescribed esomeprazole (20?mg/qd) and calcitriol (2.5?μg/qd). BMD, serum levels of calcium, carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), and alkaline-phosphatase (ALP) were assessed.

Results: (1) No significant between-group difference of age, gender, smoking, previous glucocorticoid use and hemoglobin level was found; (2) after 10.6?±?0.8?d of PPI therapy, BMD T score in the controlled group was slightly increased compared with initial (?1.25?±?0.08 versus ?1.28?±?0.06, p?=?0.084), while there was no change in the supplemented group (?1.25?±?0.05 versus ?1.26?±?0.03, p?=?0.308); (3) during study termination, calcium level in the supplemented group was slightly higher than the controlled group (2.05?±?0.03?mmol/L versus 2.01?±?0.05?mmol/L, p?=?0.073), while no significant differences of CTX (366.57?±?43.71?pg/mL versus 373.15?±?50.23?pg/mL, p?=?0.036) and ALP were found among these two groups (50.47?±?9.32?U/L versus 52.23?±?10.45?U/L, p?=?0.075).

Conclusion: Patients with gastrointestinal ulcerations with esomeprazole therapy, calcitriol supplement showed no efficacy on BMD changes.  相似文献

Purpose: The aim of this study is to show the effects of smoking on retina layers, especially retina nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer complex (GCIPL).

Materials and methods: Participants smoking for more than 10 years at least 1 pack of cigarettes a day and a control group, both including participants between ages of 20 and 50 years with no other systemic or ocular diseases were studied. After normality tests, an independent sample t test was used to analyze the differences in age, sex, spherical equivalent (SE), intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length (AL), GCIPL and RNFL values between the groups.

Results: There were 44 participants in each group. There were 32 (62.5%) men and 12(37.5%) women in smokers and 36 (77.88%) men and 8 (22.22%) women in control group. Mean ages were 39.85?±?8.41 and 38.66?±?10.47 years, mean spherical equivalent (SE) values were ?0.15?±?0.4 and 0?±?0.29 dioptries in smokers and control groups, respectively. The IOP, AXL, GCIPL and RNFL values were 17.58?±?3.41?mmHg, 23.69?±?0.56?mm, 84.3?±?5.83?μm and 92.3?±?3.51?μm in the smokers group and 18.5?±?2.91?mmHg, 23.45?±?0.72?mm, 86.11?±?8.02?μm and 97.66?±?8.23?μm in the control group. The inferior, superior, nasal and temporal values of RNFL quadrants were 123.18?±?26.14, 117.05?±?5.51, 64.95?±?8.67 and 63.5?±?6.88?μm in the smokers group and 130.81?±?11.8, 123.55?±?11.03, 72.44?±?9.84 and 58.44?±?7.48?μm in the control group. There were no significant difference of age, sex, SE, IOP, AXL and GCIPL values between the smokers and control groups (p?>?0.05). The mean RNFL was significantly thinner in the smokers group compared to controls (p?=?0.03, independent t test). Inferior and superior quadrants of RNFL decreased in smokers group (p?=?0.01 and p?=?0.03, respectively) but temporal and nasal quadrants did not seem to be changed (p?=?0.96 and p?=?0.07, respectively).

Discussion: Smoking may affect RNFL thickness but not GCIPL.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the effect of oral solifenacin succinate on Schirmer I test results, tear break-up time (TBUT) and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores in overactive bladder (OAB) patients and to compare these results with those of healthy control subjects.

Materials and methods: The female OAB patients who were prescribed oral solifenacin succinate 5?mg/day (Group I, N?=?80) and age-matched healthy female subjects (Group II, N?=?40) were recruited for the study and underwent ophthalmological examination prior to oral treatment and after 4 weeks. They completed the OSDI questionnaire and underwent ocular surface tests including Schirmer I test and TBUT.

Results: The statistical analysis of the Schirmer I test and TBUT revealed no significant difference between the baseline and 4th week values in both groups (Group I, p?=?0.506 and p?=?0.070 consecutively) (Group II, p?=?0.810 and p?=?0.823 consecutively). OSDI scores were found to be significantly increased in group I (21.8?±?4.2 vs 23.1?±?4.6, p?=?0.020) and remained unchanged in group II (20.5?±?7.0 vs 20.7?±?7.0, p?=?0.805).

Conclusions: Short-term solifenacin succinate treatment has no effect on the Schirmer I test results and TBUT, but ocular surface symptoms appeared to be exacerbated in respect with increased OSDI scores. However, the clinical significance needs to be further evaluated with larger studies.  相似文献

Purpose: To assess clinical findings of eye examination in children having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) administered with methylphenidate hydrochloride.

Methods: Fifty-seven consecutive patients diagnosed of ADHD and administered with oral methylphenidate hydrochloride treatment for at least one year were involved in this study (Group 1). Sixty healthy subjects (Group 2) having demographic features similar to group 1 were involved as a control group. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmological examination.

Results: One hundred and seventeen consecutive subjects with a mean age of 11.2?±?2.4?years (7–18?years) were enrolled. Fifty-seven consecutive patient (32 males, 25 females) under oral methylphenidate hydrochloride treatment (Group 1) and 60 healthy control subjects (30 males, 30 females) (Group 2)) were recruited for this prospective study. The mean methylphenidate hydrochloride dosage was 0.9?±?0.1?mg/kg/day and the mean duration of methylphenidate hydrochloride usage was for 2.73?±?0.73?years (1–7?years). High intraocular pressure was not observed in any of the patients in our study. We detected lens opacities in five eyes of five patients in group 1 (p?=?0.019). The patient with the highest degree of cataract formation had been using MPH for 84?months and this patient’s cataract score was P4.

Conclusion: Long-term use of methylphenidate may cause lens opacities. In particular, patients who have been using methylphenidate for more than two years should go for regular eye examination.  相似文献

Context: It is well known that oral isotretinoin treatment causes numerous ocular side-effects.

Objective: To investigate the effect of systemic isotretinoin treatment on central corneal thickness (CCT) values due to meibomian gland disease (MGD).

Participants: In this prospective study, 47 patients (27 men, 20 women) with nodulocystic acne vulgaris treated with oral isotretinoin (0.8?mg/kg daily) were included.

Methods: All patients were analyzed with the Pentacam Scheimpflug topography at baseline, on the 3rd and 6th month of treatment. Main outcome measures were MGD scores and CCT.

Results: The mean age of patients was 25.1?±?4.4 years. The mean MGD scores were significantly higher at 3rd month (1.3?±?0.9) and 6th month (1.5?±?1.0) of treatment compared with baseline (1.1?±?0.9) (p?p?p?=?0.038, r?=??0.221).

Conclusion: Isotretinoin treatment causes higher MGD scores. A statistically significant decrease in CCT due to MGD was detected at 6th month of treatment.  相似文献

Abstract

Context: Bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) has been reported to relieve liver ischemia-reperfusion-induced injury in rats.

Objective: This study was designed to determine whether the recombinant BPTI (rBPTI) can prevent the chronic liver injury induced by CCl4 in rats.

Materials and methods: Fifty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups. Rats were treated with 40% CCl4 at a dose of 2?ml/kg body weight twice a week subcutaneously for 12 weeks. In the 8th week, they were administered intraperitoneally with rBPTI (80 MU/kg), BPTI (80 MU/kg) or hepatocyte growth-promoting factor (pHGF; 100?mg/kg) daily for the next 4 weeks.

Results: rBPTI significantly prevented the disruption of liver function of alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 172.7?±?18.16 versus 141.2?±?15.28, p?=?0.003), aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 225.10?±?36.54 versus 170.06?±?27.14, p?=?0.007) and hydroxyproline (Hyp; 1.14?±?0.27 versus 0.62?±?0.17, p?=?0.001). rBPTI significantly decreased the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS; 1.15?±?0.16 versus 0.87?±?0.15, p?=?0.003) and increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD; 6.07?±?0.95 versus 7.75?±?1.12, p?=?0.007). rBPTI reduced the production of cytokines of IL-1β and TGF-β. The hepatocyte necrosis, fibrosis, fatty degeneration and inflammatory cell infiltration were ameliorated by rBPTI administration.

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that rBPTI exerted a hepatoprotective effect on chronic liver fibrosis induced by CCl4, which suggests that rBPTI may have the potential application for chronic liver injury induced by drugs metabolism and toxic substances.  相似文献

Purpose: This observational study aims to investigate the effects of tropicamide (0.5%) on corneal biomechanical properties, with the ocular response analyzer (ORA), in healthy individuals.

Methods: Corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg), and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) measurements of 38 (21 female and 17 male) healthy individuals, before and after 30?min of 0.5% tropicamide instillation, were performed by using the ORA.

Results: The mean CH, CRF, IOPg and IOPcc measurements of the eyes were 10.2?±?1.9?mmHg, 10.3?±?2.1?mmHg, 15.7?±?3.4?mmHg, 16.4?±?3.3?mmHg pre-tropicamide, and 10.4?±?1.7?mmHg, 10.3?±?2.1?mmHg, 15.3?±?3.4?mmHg, 15.8?±?2.7?mmHg post-tropicamide, respectively. The differences between the pre- and post-tropicamide measurements of the eyes were insignificant (p?=?0.184, p?=?0.659, p?=?0.294, p?=?0.150, respectively; paired t-test).

Conclusions: A tropicamide instillation does not lead to significant changes in the corneal biomechanical properties. Therefore, it can be used safely in disease, i.e. in the diagnosis and follow-up ORA as it does not cause any change.  相似文献

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the retinal toxicity of cisplatin and neuroprotective effect of selenium in cisplatin-related retinal toxicity.

Methods: Eighteen adult Wistar-Albino rats were divided into three groups. Group 1 (n?=?6) received intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 2.5?ml physiologic saline for three days, group 2 (n?=?6) received i.p. 16?mg/kg cisplatin for three days and group 3 (n?=?6) received i.p. 16?mg/kg cisplatin for three days and 1.5?mg/kg twice daily selenium via gavage five days prior to cisplatin injection and for three days concomitantly with cisplatin injections. The total retinal thickness, outer nuclear layer (ONL), inner nuclear layer (INL) and inner plexiform layer (IPL) thicknesses were measured in hematoxylin/eosin and apoptotic index (AI) of ganglion cell layer (GCL) and INL was evaluated in TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL)-stained retina sections.

Results: Selenium statistically succeeded to reduce total retinal thickness in cisplatin-toxicated retinas: from 210.17?±?23.40 to 173.55?±?20.43, ONL: 49.79?±?5.32 to 41.87?±?6.30, INL: 33.72?±?7.93 to 25.06?±?5.73 and IPL: 53.61?±?8.63 to 45.61?±?6.92?µm in hematoxylin/eosin-stained retina sections. The AI was also reduced in INL (30.10?±?12.02 to 19.48?±?12.99) and in GCL (37.59?±?17.70 to 33.15?±?13.78). However, statistical significance was present in only AI values of INL.

Conclusions: Selenium limited edema due to the toxicity and reduced the retinal thickness and showed neuroprotection in cisplatin-induced retinotoxicity.  相似文献

Purpose: To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and central retinal thickness (CRT) in asthmatic children who were under inhaled corticosteroid treatment by using Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography (SS-OCT).

Material and methods: Fifty-three children were prospectively analyzed in the study. Group 1 included 31 asthmatic children and group 2 included 22 healthy children. Asthmatic children received a dose 250?μg daily of inhaled fluticasone propionate (Flexotide, GlaxoSmithKline, Middlesex, UK). Allergy parameters including, exposure to smoke, eosinophil count, percentage of eosinophils, immunoglobuline (Ig) E levels, number of asthma attacks, number of sensitivity to allergens and follow-up time were recorded. The RNFLT, GCLT, SFCT, and CRT were analyzed with SS-OCT and the data were compared between the groups.

Results: There were 13 girls (41.9%) and 18 boys (58.1%) in group 1 and 13 girls (59.1%) and 9 boys (40.9%) in group 2 (p?=?0.22). The mean age was 9.3?±?2.2 years in group 1 and 9.9?±?1.5 years in group 2 (p?=?0.08). The mean CRT (239.26?±?34.56 µm versus 226.82?±?26.23 µm, p?=?0.22) and mean SFCT (273.97?±?40.95 µm versus 280.41?±?32.78 µm, p?=?0.54) did not significantly differ between the groups. The superior, inferior, and average RNFLT were significantly lower in group 1 than group 2 (p?p?p?Conclusions: The SS-OCT revealed that asthmatic children under inhaled corticosteroid treatment have lower RNFLT than healthy subjects.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the peripapillary choroidal thickness of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) via enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT).

Materials and methods: A total of 80 patients with COPD (80 eyes) and 50 control subjects (50 eyes) were enrolled. Choroidal scans and the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were obtained for all eyes using OCT.

Results: The average peripapillary choroidal thickness measurements of the COPD group (147.58?±?53.53?μm) were lower than the control group (160.84?±?44.73?μm) (p?=?0.068). Inferior segment thicknesses were significantly thinner than the other segments (p?<?0.05). Subfoveal choroidal thickness and RNFL thickness measurements of the COPD group were also lower than those of the control group (p?=?0.111).

Conclusion: Hypoxia in COPD seems to affect the choroidal thickness. Thinning of the choroid may be attributed to increased vascular resistance and reduced blood flow in patients with COPD. The possible effects of the disease to the eye may be clarified through the role of the choroidal vasculature in the blood supply of the anterior optic nerve head.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the effects of two different medical treatment options on choroidal thickness (CT) in cases of open-angle glaucoma (OAG).

Methods: Sixty-seven eyes newly diagnosed with OAG and 52 healthy eyes constituting the control group were included in the study. Glaucomatous eyes were randomly divided into two subgroups; Group I was started on bimatoprost 0.03% and Group II on a brinzolamide 1.0%/timolol maleate 0.5% fixed combination (BTFC). Intraocular pressure (IOP), ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) and subfoveal CT measurements were performed in all eyes in the study before treatment and on weeks 2, 4 and 8 after treatment.

Results: Mean initial IOP values in groups I and II and the control group were 25.5?±?4.7, 25.1?±?5.2 and 16.1?±?2.9?mmHg, mean OPA values were 3.7?±?1, 3.6?±?1.4 and 2.4?±?0.6?mmHg and mean CT values were 269.4?±?83, 264.5?±?84.4 and 320.1?±?56.6?μm, respectively. Eight weeks after treatment, mean IOP values in Groups I and II and the control group were 18.3?±?2.6, 18.1?±?3.4 and 15.7?±?2.9?mmHg, mean OPA values were 2.9?±?1.2, 2.8?±?1.5 and 2.3?±?0.8?mmHg and mean CT values were 290.2?±?87.3, 271.8?±?82.5 and 319.3?±?56.8?μm, respectively. No significant difference was determined in terms of the decrease in IOP and OPA obtained after treatment in Group I and Group II. However, a significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of choroidal thickening after treatment.

Conclusion: The use of topical ocular hypotensive medication in eyes with OAG results in an increase in CT. This increase is relatively greater with bimatoprost 0.03% therapy compared to BTFC.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Objective: To compare the efficacy of lenograstim and filgrastim on haematological recovery following an autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) with high-dose chemotherapy.

Methods: A retrospective case-controlled study.

Results: Absolute neutrophil count (ANC) recovery above 0.5?×?109?l?1 and white blood cell (WBC) recovery above 4?×?109?l?1 for 3 consecutive days was achieved earlier with filgrastim than with lenograstim ((13.2?±?8.0 vs 19.0?±?10.0 days, p?=?0.004), (16.9?±?9.7 vs 29.9?±?16.6 days, p?=?0.001), respectively). The platelet recovery above 20 x 109/l was also achieved earlier with filgrastim than with lenograstim (19.5?±?11.6 vs

27.2?±?13.8 days, p?=?0.006). Furthermore, filgrastim-treated patients received fewer days of granulocyte colony simulating factor (G-CSF) administration (12.5?±?7.0 vs 18.6?±?8.5 days, p?=?0.001) and spent less time in hospital (23.7?±?10.9 vs 32.0?±?17.6 days, p?=?0.009). Duration of antibiotic administration was also significantly shorter in the filgrastim group (13.6?±?7.6 vs 29.1?±?19.8 days, p?=?0.001). Conclusion: In patients undergoing PBSCT following high-dose chemotherapy, filgrastim significantly reduced the duration of neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and days of G-CSF administration, and led to earlier hospital discharge compared with lenograstim.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Background: Collagen hydrolysate is a nutritional supplement that has been shown to exert an anabolic effect on cartilage tissue. Its administration appears beneficial in patients with osteoarthritis.

Objective: To investigate the effect of collagen hydrolysate on activity-related joint pain in athletes who are physically active and have no evidence of joint disease.

Design and setting: A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study was conducted at Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania. Parameters including joint pain, mobility, and inflammation were evaluated with the use of a visual analogue scale during a 24-week study phase.

Study participants: Between September 2005 and June 2006, 147 subjects who competed on a varsity team or a club sport were recruited. Data from 97 of 147 subjects could be statistically evaluated.

Intervention: One hundred and forty-seven subjects (72 male, 75 female) were randomly assigned to two groups: a group (n?=?73) receiving 25?mL of a liquid formulation that contained 10?g of collagen hydrolysate (CH-Alpha)* and a group (n?=?74) receiving a placebo, which consisted of 25?mL of liquid that contained xanthan.

Main outcome measures: The primary efficacy parameter was the change in the visual analogue scales from baseline during the study phase in relation to the parameters referring to pain, mobility, and inflammation.

Results: When data from all subjects (n?=?97) were evaluated, six parameters showed statistically significant changes with the dietary supplement collagen hydrolysate (CH) compared with placebo: joint pain at rest, assessed by the physician (CH vs. placebo (–1.37?±?1.78 vs. –0.90?±?1.74 (?p?=?0.025)) and five parameters assessed by study participants: joint pain when walking (–1.11?±?1.98 vs. –0.46?±?1.63, p?=?0.007), joint pain when standing (–0.97?±?1.92 vs. –0.43?±?1.74, p?=?0.011), joint pain at rest (–0.81?±?1.77 vs. –0.39?±?1.56, p?=?0.039), joint pain when carrying objects (–1.45?±?2.11 vs. –0.83?±?1.71, p?=?0.014) and joint pain when lifting (–1.79?±?2.11 vs. –1.26?±?2.09, p?=?0.018). When a subgroup analysis of subjects with knee arthralgia (n?=?63) was performed, the difference between the effect of collagen hydrolysate vs. placebo was more pronounced. The parameter joint pain at rest, assessed by the physician, had a statistical significance level of p?=?0.001 (–1.67?±?1.89 vs. –0.86?±?1.77), while the other five parameters based on the participants’ assessments were also statistically significant: joint pain when walking (?p?=?0.003 (– 1.38?±?2.12 vs. – 0.54?±?1.65)), joint pain when standing (?p?=?0.015 (–1.17?±?2.06 vs. –0.50?±?1.68)), joint pain at rest with (?p?=?0.021 (–1.01 ±1.92 vs. –0.47?±?1.63)), joint pain when running a straight line (?p?=?0.027 (–1.50?±?1.97 vs. –0.80?±?1.66)) and joint pain when changing direction (?p?=?0.026 (–1.87?±?2.18 vs. –1.20?±?2.10)).

Conclusion: This was the first clinical trial of 24-weeks duration to show improvement of joint pain in athletes who were treated with the dietary supplement collagen hydrolysate. The results of this study have implications for the use of collagen hydrolysate to support joint health and possibly reduce the risk of joint deterioration in a high-risk group. Despite the study's size and limitations, the results suggest that athletes consuming collagen hydrolysate can reduce parameters (such as pain) that have a negative impact on athletic performance. Future studies are needed to support these findings.  相似文献

Abstract

Context: The non-invasive ophthalmic therapy has a drawback: low residence time in the eye socket. Nanoparticles and contact lenses have been studied as promising ocular drug delivery systems.

Objective: To develop a nanoemulsion and evaluate its compatibility with a soft contact lens as a potential strategy for ocular delivery.

Materials and methods: The formulations were developed by spontaneous emulsification and fully characterized. Two drops of nanoemulsion were instilled on the surface of a commercial contact lens and its transparency was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Before and after the instillation of the drops, the morphology (scanning electron microscopy – SEM) and ion permeability of the lenses were analyzed.

Results: The formulations had a mean particle size of 234?nm, polydispersity below 0.16, zeta potential of ?8.56?±?3.49?mV, slightly acid pH, viscosity ≈1.2?mPa?s?1 and spherical-shaped particles. Nanoemulsion was non-irritant (hen’s egg test-chorioallantoic membrane), which was confirmed by the cytotoxicity studies in the SIRC cell cultures. After instillation, SEM analysis showed nanodroplets inside and on the surface of the lenses, although their transparency remained near 100%. No significant differences were found between lens ion permeability coefficients before and after instillation.

Conclusions: Formulations presented appropriate physicochemical characteristics and suitability for ocular application. The contact lens remained transparent and ion-permeable after association with the formulation.  相似文献

Aim: To investigate the effects of chronic smoking on dry eye parameters.

Methods: Ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and tear function tests such as Schirmer’s test, tear break-up-time (TBUT) test and impression cytology of 63 female chronic smokers and 40 age-matched female non-smokers were analyzed statistically.

Results: The mean OSDI scores, Schirmer test results and TBUT levels were 35.85?±?24.01 point, 14.25?±?5.94?mm and 5.17?±?2.85?s in chronic smokers and 15.20?±?12.93 point, 15.48?±?7.01?mm and 10.03?±?3.44?s in non-smokers, respectively. Differences in OSDI scores, TBUT levels and impression cytology grades among the chronic smokers and non-smokers were statistically significant.

Conclusion: Smoking behavior seems to affect the dry eye parameters negatively.  相似文献

Objective: Concomitant varicose veins of the pelvis (VVP) and lower extremities (VVLE) frequently coexist. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) in the treatment of patients with both conditions.

Methods: Female outpatients with concomitant VVP and VVLE received MPFF 1000?mg once daily for 2 months (Group 1), or 1000?mg twice daily for 1 month followed by 1000?mg once daily for 1 month (Group 2), based on pelvic pain intensity. Change in pain intensity during treatment was evaluated on a 10?cm visual analog scale. All patients underwent transvaginal and transabdominal duplex ultrasound scanning, radionuclide phlebography of the lower extremities, and emission computer tomography of the pelvic veins at inclusion and end of treatment.

Results: In Group 1 (N?=?35), MPFF was associated with a twofold reduction in pain syndrome severity (pelvic, perineal and lower leg pain) in all patients after 1 month, and a reduction in chronic pelvic pain (CPP) from 3.4?±?1.2 to 0.83?±?0.18?cm at 2 months. Leg pain significantly decreased from 2.8?±?0.6 at baseline to 0.94?±?0.11 after 2 months. In Group 2 (N?=?30), MPFF decreased CPP severity from 6.3?±?0.8 to 1.2?±?0.12, perineal pain from 3.6?±?0.9 to 0.88?±?0.22 and leg pain from 4.6?±?0.5 to 0.9?±?0.1. Radionuclide phlebography confirmed the clinical improvement in both treatment groups, with a substantial increase in linear blood flow velocity in the internal iliac veins (~10% in Group 1 and 35% in Group 2) and a reduction in mean transit times of the radiopharmaceutical. MPFF also reduced blood stasis in the pelvic venous plexuses. Gastralgias were reported in two patients but resolved rapidly and did not lead to treatment withdrawal.

Conclusion: Phlebotropic treatment with MPFF is an effective and safe method of conservative therapy in patients with concomitant VVP and VVLE.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the effect of an acute (1 week) and chronic (3 weeks) exposure to E-cigarette (E-cig) emissions on mucociliary clearance (MCC) in murine lungs.

Methods: C57BL/6 male mice (age 10.5?±?2.4 weeks) were exposed for 20?min/day to E-cigarette aerosol generated by a Joyetech 510-T® E-cig containing either 0% nicotine (N)/propylene glycol (PG) for 1 week (n?=?6), or 3 weeks (n?=?9), or 2.4% N/PG for one week (n?=?6), or 3 weeks (n?=?9), followed by measurement of MCC. Control mice (n?=?15) were not exposed to PG alone, or N/PG. MCC was assessed by gamma camera following aspiration of 99mtechnetium aerosol and was expressed as the amount of radioactivity removed from both lungs over 6?hours (MCC6hrs). Venous blood was assayed for cotinine levels in control mice and in mice exposed for 3-weeks to PG alone and N/PG.

Results: MCC6hrs in control mice and in mice acutely exposed to PG alone and N/PG was similar, averaging (±1 standard deviation) 8.6?±?5.2%, 7.5?±?2.8% and 11.2?±?5.9%, respectively. In contrast, chronic exposure to PG alone stimulated MCC6hrs (17.2?±?8.0)% and this stimulation was significantly blunted following chronic exposure to N/PG (8.7?±?4.6)% (p?Conclusions: In this murine model, a chronic, daily, 20?min-exposure to N/PG, but not an acute exposure, slowed MCC, compared to exposure to PG alone and led to systemic absorption of nicotine.  相似文献

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of long-term clozapine usage on tear film stability and corneal topographic parameters.

Material and methods: The study was conducted between March 2014 and November 2014. Thirty patients who were diagnosed of schizophrenia and have been under clozapine treatment for 2.73?±?0.73 years (range 2–4 years) were involved in this study (group 1). Thirty healthy subjects (group 2) who have statistically similar demographic features compared with the group 1, were involved as a control group. Full ophthalmologic examination with biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy was applied. Corneal topographic parameters were measured using the Pentacam HR and Schirmer test was done. Statistical analysis of the subjects was evaluated by using SPSS (for Windows version 16.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) program.

Results: K1 value was measured as 43.39?±?0.17?D (43–43.50?D) and K2 value was measured as 43.39?±?0.06?D (43.30–43.50?D) in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In groups 1 and 2, K2 values were noted as 43.86?±?0.27?D (43.50–44.50?D) and 43.72?±?0.18?D (43.50–44.00?D), respectively. Central corneal thickness was found to be 523.93?±?15.66?µm (495–554?µm) and 550.13?±?1.03?µm (520–580?µm) in groups 1 and 2, respectively. Corneal apex thickness was 525.86?±?15.75?µm (497–556?µm) in group 1 and 551.60?±?14.99?µm (521–581?µm) in group 2. The corneal thickness of thinnest location was 520.93?±?15.60?µm (492–551?µm) and 548.06?±?15.17?µm (518–578?µm) in groups 1 and 2, respectively. Corneal volume was determined as 58.13?±?3.46?mm3 (52–64?mm3) in group 1 and 60.73?±?3.76?mm3 (54–66?mm3) in group 2. The Schirmer test showed thichkness of 3.33?±?0.72?mm (2–4?mm) and 13.60?±?1.59?mm (11–16?mm) in groups 1 and 2, respectively. The mean fluorescein break-up time was 5.40?±?1.50?s (3–8?s) and 12.46?±?1.40?s (10–14?s) in groups 1 and 2, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the Schirmer test, fluorescein break-up time, central corneal thickness, corneal apex, and the thinnest corneal location thickness between the two groups.

Conclusion: Clozapine may induce dry eye syndrome and thus may lead to morphological alterations in corneal parameters through its anticholinergic and antidopaminergic activities. Because of these corneal alterations, one should be aware of evaluating patients having diseases like glaucoma or preoperative selection of corneal refractive surgery candidates.  相似文献
