INTRODUCTION
No reliably specific marker for acute appendicitis has been identified. Although recent studies have shown hyperbilirubinaemia to be a useful predictor of appendiceal perforation, they did not focus on the value of bilirubin as a marker for acute appendicitis. The aim of this study was to determine the value of hyperbilirubinaemia as a marker for acute appendicitis.MATERIALS AND METHODS
A retrospective analysis of appendicectomies performed in two hospitals (n=472). Data collected included laboratory and histological results. Patients were grouped according to histology findings and comparisons were made between the groups.RESULTS
The mean bilirubin levels were higher for patients with simple appendicitis compared to those with a non-inflamed appendix (p<0.001). More patients with simple appendicitis had hyperbilirubinaemia on admission (30% vs 12%) and the odds of these patients having appendicitis were over three times higher (odds ratio: 3.25, p<0.001). Hyperbilirubinaemia had a specificity of 88% and a positive predictive value of 91% for acute appendicitis. Patients with appendicitis who had a perforated or gangrenous appendix had higher mean bilirubin levels (p=0.01) and were more likely to have hyperbilirubinaemia (p<0.001). The specificity of hyperbilirubinaemia for perforation or gangrene was 70%. The specificities of white cell count and C-reactive protein were less than hyperbilirubinaemia for simple appendicitis (60% and 72%) and perforated or gangrenous appendicitis (19% and 36%).CONCLUSIONS
Hyperbilirubinaemia is a valuable marker for acute appendicitis. Patients with hyperbilirubinaemia are also more likely to have appendiceal perforation or gangrene. Bilirubin should be included in the assessment of patients with suspected appendicitis. 相似文献2.

Background
Only few studies have examined the impact of racial differences on the age of onset, course and outcomes of diverticulitis.Aim
To provide data about the epidemiology of diverticulitis in northern Israel, and to determine whether ethnicity is a predictor of age of onset, complications, and need for surgery.Methods
Was conducted a retrospective review of the charts of all patients diagnosed with a first episode of diverticulitis in our hospital between 2005 and 2012.Results
Were found 638 patients with a first episode of acute diverticulitis in the eight year interval. Israeli Arabs developed a first episode of diverticulitis at a younger age compared to Jews (51.2 vs 63.8 years, p<0.01). Arabs living in rural areas developed diverticulitis at a younger age than Arabs living in urban centers (49.4 vs 54.5 years, P=0.03). Jewish and Arabic men developed diverticulitis at younger age compared to their female counterparts (59.9 vs 66.09, p<0.01, and 47.31 vs 56.93, p<0.01, respectively). Arabs were more likely [odds ratio (OR)=1.81 ,95% confidence interval (CI)1.12-2.90, p=0.017] than Jews to require surgical treatment (urgent or elective) for diverticulitis.Conclusions
Israeli Arabs tend to develop diverticulitis at a younger age and are more likely to require surgical treatment for diverticulitis compared to Jews. Arabs living in rural areas develop diverticulitis at a younger age than Arabs living in urban centers. These findings highlight a need to address the root cause for ethnic differences in onset, course and outcome of acute diverticulitis. 相似文献3.

Background and Objectives:
To compare laparoscopic appendectomy with traditional open appendectomy.Methods:
Seventy-one patients requiring operative intervention for suspected acute appendicitis were prospectively compared. Thirty-seven patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy, and 34 had open appendectomy through a right lower quadrant incision. Length of surgery, postoperative morbidity and length of postoperative stay (LOS) were recorded. Both groups were similar with regard to age, gender, height, weight, fever, leukocytosis, and incidence of normal vs. gangrenous or perforated appendix.Results:
Mean LOS was significantly shorter for patients with acute suppurative appendicitis who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy (2.5 days vs. 4.0 days, p<0.01). Mean LOS was no different when patients classified as having gangrenous or perforated appendicitis were included in the analysis (3.7 days vs. 4.1 days, P=0.11). The laparoscopy group had significantly longer surgery times (72 min vs. 58 min, p<0.001). There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative morbidity.Conclusions:
Laparoscopic appendectomy reduces LOS as compared with the traditional open technique in patients with acute suppurative appendicitis. The longer operative time for the laparoscopic approach in our study is likely related to the learning curve associated with the procedure and did not increase morbidity. 相似文献4.

Background
We sought to determine the association between the presence of a fecalith and acute/nonperforated appendicitis, gangrenous/perforated appendicitis and the healthy appendix.Methods
We retrospectively analyzed appendectomies performed between October 2003 and February 2012. We collected data on age, sex, appendix histology and the presence of a fecalith.Results
During the study period, 1357 appendectomies were performed. Fecaliths were present in 186 patients (13.7%). There were 94 male (50.5%) and 92 female patients, and the mean age was 32 (range of 10–76) years. The fecalith rate was 13%–16% and was nonexistant after age 80 years. The main groups with fecaliths were those with acute/nonperforated appendicitis (n = 121, 65.1%, p = 0.041) and those with a healthy appendix (n = 65, 34.9%, p = 0.003). The presence of fecaliths in the gangrenous/perforated appendicitis group was not significant (n = 19, 10.2%, p = 0.93). There were no fecaliths in patients with serositis, carcinoid or carcinoma.Conclusion
Our data confirm the theory of a statistical association between the presence of a fecalith and acute (nonperforated) appendicitis in adults. There was also a significant association between the healthy appendix and asymptomatic fecaliths. There was no correlation between a gangrenous/perforated appendix and the presence of a fecalith. The fecalith is an incidental finding and not always the primary cause of acute (nonperforated) appendictis or gangrenous (perforated) appendicitis. Introduction
The prevailing view on appendicitis is that the main aetiology is obstruction owing to faecoliths in adults and lymphoid hyperplasia in children. Faecoliths on imaging studies are believed to correlate well with appendicitis.Methods
A retrospective chart review was conducted of 1,014 emergency appendicectomy patients between 2001 and 2011. Faecolith prevalence in adult and paediatric appendicectomy specimens with and without perforation was studied. The sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) of computed tomography (CT) for identifying faecoliths in the pathology specimen were examined.Results
Overall, faecoliths were found in 18.1% (178/986) of appendicitis specimens and 28.6% (8/28) of negative appendicectomies. Faecolith prevalence for positive cases was 29.9% (79/264) in paediatric patients and 13.7% (99/722) in adults (p<0.05). Faecolith prevalence was 39.4% in perforated appendicitis but only 14.6% in non-perforated appendicitis (p<0.05). In adults, faecolith prevalence was 27.5% in perforated appendicitis and 12.0% in non-perforated appendicitis (p<0.05) while in paediatric patients, it was 56.1% in perforated appendicitis and 22.7% in non-perforated appendicitis (p=0.00). Sensitivity and PPV of preoperative CT in identifying faecoliths on pathology were 53.1% (86/162) and 44.8% (86/192) respectively.Conclusions
Faecolith prevalence is too low to consider the faecolith the most common cause of non-perforated appendicitis. Faecoliths are more prevalent in paediatric appendicitis than in adult appendicitis. Preoperative CT is an unreliable predictor of faecoliths in pathology specimens. 相似文献6.

INTRODUCTION
Acute appendicitis remains a common surgical condition and the importance of specific elements in the clinical diagnosis remain controversial. A variety of neoplastic and inflammatory conditions mimic acute appendicitis. The purpose of this study was to determine the presenting pattern of acute appendicitis and to review the pathological diagnosis.PATIENTS AND METHODS
This is a retrospective analysis of 324 patients who had appendicectomy for acute appendicitis at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital (Natal, South Africa) during the period January 2002 to December 2004. Patient demographics, clinical features, white cell count, operative findings, outcome and histology results were recorded on a special patient proforma.RESULTS
A total of 371 patients underwent appendicectomy during this period and 324 (M:F, 3.6:1) were available for analysis. The majority of our patients were in the second decade (43.1%) with only 29.3% presenting within 24 h of onset of symptoms. The most common symptoms were abdominal pain (100%), vomiting (57.4%) and anorexia (49.0%). Generalised and localised abdominal tenderness were present in 62.0% and 19.4% of patients, respectively. Pyrexia was noted in 41.0%. Localised and generalised peritonitis were present in 26.4% and 14.0%, respectively. The most common incisions were lower midline laparotomy (47.2%) and gridiron (37.3%). The negative appendicectomy rate was 17.0%. Acute appendiceal inflammation and gangrenous appendicitis was present in 36.1% and 9.6%, respectively. The perforation rate was 34.0% and there was a direct correlation with delayed presentation. There were no patients with carcinoid tumour or adenocarcinoma. Parasites and other associated conditions were seen in 8.6% of cases. Postoperative complications included: wound sepsis (25.3%), prolonged ileus (6.2%), peritonitis (4.6%) and chest infection (3.4%). Four patients died (1.2%) all from the perforated group.CONCLUSIONS
Our patients present late with advanced disease and complications. All surgeons should bear in mind the possibility of parasitic infestations mimicking acute appendicitis and the presence of significant unusual histological findings in our setting justifies routine histopathological examination of appendices. 相似文献7.

Introduction
Appendicitis in the developing world is a cause of significant preventable morbidity. This prospective study from a regional hospital in South Africa constructs a robust cost model that demonstrates the cost effectiveness of an efficient curative surgical service in a primary healthcare-orientated system.Methods
A prospective audit of all patients with acute appendicitis admitted to Edendale Hospital was undertaken from September 2010 to September 2011. A microcosting approach was used to construct a cost model based on the estimated cost of operative and perioperative interventions together with the associated hospital stay. For cost analysis, patients were divided into the following cohorts: uncomplicated appendicitis, complicated appendicitis with localised intra-abdominal sepsis, complicated appendicitis with generalised intra-abdominal sepsis, with and without intensive care unit admission.Results
Two hundred patients were operated on for acute appendicitis. Of these, 36% (71/200) had uncomplicated appendicitis and 57% (114/200) had perforation. Pathologies other than appendicitis were present in 8% (15/200) and these patients were excluded. Of the perforated appendices, 45% (51/114) had intra-abdominal contamination that was localised while 55% (63/114) generalised sepsis. The mean cost for each patient was: 6,578 ZAR (£566) for uncomplicated appendicitis; 14,791 ZAR (£1,272) for perforation with localised intra-abdominal sepsis and 34,773 ZAR (£2,990) for perforation with generalised intra-abdominal sepsis without intensive care admission. With intensive care admission it was 77,816 ZAR (£6,692). The total cost of managing acute appendicitis was 4,272,871 ZAR (£367,467). Almost 90% of this total cost was owing to advanced disease with abdominal sepsis and therefore potentially preventable.Conclusions
Early uncomplicated appendicitis treated appropriately carries little morbidity and is relatively inexpensive to treat. As the pathology progresses, the cost rises exponentially. An efficient curative surgical service must be regarded as a cost effective component of a primary healthcare orientated system. 相似文献8.

Background:
The urachus is a vestigial structure between the dome of the bladder and the umbilicus. Tumors may develop from the remnants, most of which are well-differentiated, mucinous adenocarcinomas. Urachal adenocarcinoma is an exceedingly rare type of tumor.Methods:
We present a case of a 51-year-old female presenting to our institution with complaints of abdominal pain for 36 hours. The patient was taken to the operating room for an acute appendicitis. Laparoscopy was performed, and gross purulence and appendiceal perforation were noted as well as a mass on the anterior abdominal wall. Based on the location of the mass, we converted to an open midline laparotomy to treat both the perforated appendicitis and to remove the mass.Results:
Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of perforated appendicitis and a mucinous-producing urachal adeno-carcinoma.Discussion:
Data support both open and laparoscopic approaches for appendicitis. This case, although rare, highlights the importance of laparoscopy in a complete and thorough examination of the abdominal cavity. A standard right lower quadrant incision for an open technique would likely have resulted in omission of this lesion, and the patient would have presented at a more typical late stage of her cancer development with significantly more morbidity. 相似文献9.

Objective
To compare the efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) and open appendectomy (OA) in the treatment of acute appendicitis.Design
A prospective randomized trial.Setting
A university teaching hospital.Patients
Eighty-one patients with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis were prospectively randomized to undergo either LA or OA. The two groups were matched for age and sex.Interventions
LA or OA.Main Outcome Measures
Number of days in hospital and time to full recovery.Results
The mean hospital stay for LA was 3.23 days compared with 3.03 days for OA (p < 0.001). The mean number of narcotic injections required for patients in the LA group was 4.05 compared with 5.58 for patients in the OA group (p < 0.001). The mean time to complete recovery for patients in the LA group was 9.0 days compared with 16.2 days for patients in the OA group (p < 0.001). The mean operative time for LA was 73.8 minutes compared with 45.0 minutes for OA (p < 0.001). Three patients in the LA group had intra-abdominal abscesses (p > 0.25). No significant difference in wound infection rates was demonstrated (p > 0.05). Similarly, pain scores at 7 and 28 days showed no significant difference (p > 0.05).Conclusions
With LA significantly fewer narcotic injections are required and there is a more rapid return to normal activities. LA takes longer to perform and was associated with three intra-abdominal abscesses. In cases of simple acute appendicitis the hospital stay for LA is significantly shorter. 相似文献10.

Background
Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of abdominal surgery in children. Adjuncts are used to help clinicians predict acute or perforated appendicitis, which may affect treatment decisions. Automated hematologic analyzers can perform more accurate automated differentials including immature granulocyte percentages (IG%). Elevated IG% has demonstrated improved accuracy for predicting sepsis in the neonatal population than traditional immature-to-total neutrophil count ratios. We intended to assess the additional discriminatory ability of IG% to traditionally assessed parameters in the differentiation between acute and perforated appendicitis.Materials and methods
We identified all patients with appendicitis from July 2012–June 2013 by International Classification of Diseases-9 code. Charts were reviewed for relevant demographic, clinical, and outcome data, which were compared between acute and perforated appendicitis groups using Fisher exact and t-tests for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. We used an adjusted logistic regression model using clinical laboratory values to predict the odds of perforated appendicitis.Results
A total of 251 patients were included in the analysis. Those with perforated appendicitis had a higher white blood cell count (P = 0.0063), C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.0001), and IG% (P = 0.0299). In the adjusted model, only elevated CRP (odds ratio 3.46, 95% confidence interval 1.40–8.54) and presence of left shift (odds ratio 2.66, 95% confidence interval 1.09–6.46) were significant predictors of perforated appendicitis. The c-statistic of the final model was 0.70, suggesting fair discriminatory ability in predicting perforated appendicitis.Conclusions
IG% did not provide any additional benefit to elevated CRP and presence of left shift in the differentiation between acute and perforated appendicitis. 相似文献11.

Background
Acute appendicitis remains the most common cause of the acute abdomen in young adults, and the mainstay of treatment in most centres is an appendectomy. However, treatment for other intra-abdominal inflammatory processes, such as diverticulitis, consists initially of conservative management with antibiotics. The aim of this study was to determine the role of antibiotics in the management of acute appendicitis and to assess if appendectomy remains the gold standard of care.Methods
A literature search using MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library identified studies published between 1999 and 2009, and we reviewed all relevant articles. The articles were critiqued using the Public Health Resource Unit (2006) appraisal tools.Results
Our search yielded 41 papers, and we identified a total of 13 papers within the criteria specified. All of these papers, while posing pertinent questions and demonstrating the role of antibiotics as a bridge to surgery, failed to adequately justify their findings that antibiotics could be used as a definitive treatment of acute appendicitis.Conclusion
Appendectomy remains the gold standard of treatment for acute appendicitis based on the current evidence. 相似文献12.

Introduction
The current surgical management of acute complicated diverticulitis has seen a major paradigm shift from routine operative intervention to a more conservative approach. This has been made possible by the widespread availability of computed tomography (CT) to enable stratification of the disease severity of acute complicated diverticulitis. The aim of this study was to retrospectively validate a CT grading system for acute complicated diverticulitis in the prediction of the need for operative or percutaneous intervention.Methods
Hospital and radiology records were reviewed to identify patients with acute complicated diverticulitis confirmed by CT. A consultant gastrointestinal radiologist, blinded to the clinical outcomes of patients, assigned a score according to the CT grading system.Results
Three hundred and sixty-seven patients (34.6%) had CT performed for acute diverticulitis during the study period. Forty-four patients (12.0%) had acute complicated diverticulitis (abscess and/or free intraperitoneal air) confirmed on CT. There were 22 women (50%) and the overall median age was 59 years (range: 19–92 years). According to the CT findings, there was one case with grade 1, eighteen patients with grade 2, four with grade 3 and twenty-one with grade 4 diverticulitis. Three patients with grade 2, three patients with grade 3 and ten patients with grade 4 disease underwent acute radiological or surgical intervention.Conclusions
The use of a CT grading system for acute complicated diverticulitis did not predict the need for acute radiological or operative intervention in this small study. Decision making guided by the patient’s clinical condition still retains a primary role in the management of acute complicated diverticulitis. 相似文献13.

INTRODUCTION
Intestinal malrotation is a rare congenital anomaly, and acute appendicitis associated with intestinal malrotation is extremely rare.PRESENTATION OF CASE We report a rare case of a 47-year-old Japanese woman diagnosed with barium-related perforated appendicitis associated with intestinal malrotation. We used a transumbilical single-incision laparoscopic approach to resect the appendix, and the procedure was completed successfully without perioperative complications.DISCUSSION
To our knowledge, single-incision laparoscopic surgery for appendicitis associated with intestinal malrotation has not been reported yet. In cases with mobile cecum such as this one, mobilization from inflammatory adhesion of the surrounding structures is easy.CONCLUSION
We conclude that transumbilical single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy is a simple and less invasive method for treating appendicitis associated with intestinal malrotation. 相似文献14.

Background
The Alvarado score is the most widely used clinical prediction tool to facilitate decision-making in patients with acute appendicitis, but it has not been validated in the black South African population, which has much wider differential diagnosis than developed world populations. We investigated the applicability of this score to our local population and sought to introduce a checklist for rural doctors to facilitate early referral.Methods
We analyzed patients with proven appendicitis for the period January 2008 to December 2012. Alvarado scores were retrospectively assigned based on patients’ admission charts. We generated a clinical probability score (1–4 = low, 5–6 = intermediate, 7–10 = high).Results
We studied 1000 patients (54% male, median age 21 yr). Forty percent had inflamed, nonperforated appendices and 60% had perforated appendices. Alvarado scores were 1–4 in 20.9%, 5–6 in 35.7% and 7–10 in 43.4%, indicating low, intermediate and high clincial probability, respectively. In our subgroup analysis of 510 patients without generalized peritonitis, Alvarado scores were 1–4 in 5.5%, 5–6 in 18.1% and 7–10 in 76.4%, indicating low, intermediate and high clinical probability, respectively.Conclusion
The widespread use of the Alvarado score has its merits, but its applicability in the black South African population is unclear, with a significant proportion of patients with the disease being potentially missed. Further prospective validation of the Alvarado score and possible modification is needed to increase its relevance in our setting. 相似文献15.
Background
There is little information available to inform choice of technique for appendiceal stump control in pediatric laparoscopic appendectomy (LA). We compared complications (stump leak, intra-abdominal abscess formation [IAA], surgical site infection [SSI]) in children undergoing LA for perforated (PA) and nonperforated appendicitis (NPA) by technique of appendiceal stump control.Methods
All children who underwent LA for confirmed acute appendicitis between 2006 and 2009 were reviewed. Choice of stump control (endoloop [EL] or endostapler [ES]) was determined by surgeon preference. Interactions between stump closure techniques and other potential confounders (intra-abdominal drain, irrigation, different antibiotic regimens) were explored using a logistic regression model.Results
Of 242 patients undergoing LA, 57 (23.6%) had PA. In the PA group the appendiceal stump was closed with EL in 47 (82.5%) patients, while in the NPA group EL was used in 161 (87%) patients. Among PA patients, IAA was more common in the ES than the EL group (5 of 10 [50%] v. 6 of 47 [12.7%]). There was no significant difference in rates of SSI. Among NPA patients, there were no differences in rates of IAA or SSI. There were no stump leaks in either group. Logistic regression analysis confirmed the predictive effect of ES use on IAA formation in PA (adjusted odds ratio 7.09; 95% confidence interval 1.08–46.13; p = 0.042).Conclusion
Our data suggest that in most cases of PA, the appendiceal stump can be safely controlled with EL. Within the PA group, the higher rates of IAA seen in ES patients may be attributable to the quality of the appendiceal stump rather than the technique of closure. 相似文献16.

INTRODUCTION
Atypical presentations of appendix have been reported including backache, left lower quadrant pain and groin pain from a strangulated femoral hernia containing the appendix. We report a case presenting an epigastric pain that was diagnosed after computed tomography as a perforated appendicitis on intestinal malrotation.PRESENTATION OF CASE
A 27-year-old man was admitted with a three-day history of epigastric pain. Physical examination revealed tenderness and defense on palpation of epigastric region. There was a left subcostal incision with the history of diaphragmatic hernia repair when the patient was 3 days old. He had an intestinal malrotation with the cecum fixed at the epigastric region and the inflamed appendix extending beside the left lobe of liver.DISCUSSION
While appendicitis is the most common abdominal disease requiring surgical intervention seen in the emergency room setting, intestinal malrotation is relatively uncommon. When patients with asymptomatic undiagnosed gastrointestinal malrotation clinically present with abdominal pain, accurate diagnosis and definitive therapy may be delayed, possibly increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality.CONCLUSION
Atypical presentations of acute appendicitis should be kept in mind in patients with abdominal pain in emergency room especially in patients with previous childhood operation for diaphragmatic hernia. 相似文献17.

Introduction
Inflammatory markers such as white cell count (WCC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) and, more recently, bilirubin have been used as adjuncts in the diagnosis of appendicitis. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the above markers in acute and perforated appendicitis as well as their value in excluding the condition.Methods
A retrospective analysis of 1,169 appendicectomies was performed. Patients were grouped according to histological examination of appendicectomy specimens (normal appendix = NA, acute appendicitis = AA, perforated appendicitis = PA) and preoperative laboratory test results were correlated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve area analysis (area under the curve [AUC]) was performed to examine diagnostic accuracy.Results
ROC analysis of all laboratory variables showed that no independent variable was diagnostic for AA. Good diagnostic accuracy was seen for AA when all variables were combined (WCC/CRP/bilirubin combined AUC: 0.8173). In PA, the median CRP level was significantly higher than that of AA (158mg/l vs 30mg, p<0.0001). CRP also showed the highest sensitivity (100%) and negative predictive value (100%) for PA. CRP had the highest diagnostic accuracy in PA (AUC: 0.9322) and this was increased when it was combined with WCC (AUC: 0.9388). Bilirubin added no diagnostic value in PA. Normal levels of WCC, CRP and bilirubin could not rule out appendicitis.Conclusions
CRP provides the highest diagnostic accuracy for PA. Bilirubin did not provide any discriminatory value for AA and its complications. Normal inflammatory markers cannot exclude appendicitis, which remains a clinical diagnosis. 相似文献18.

INTRODUCTION
Clinical assessment outweighs the use of investigations in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Nevertheless, white cell count (WCC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are regularly measured in patients with suspected appendicitis. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of these markers in patients presenting with acute lower abdominal pain.PATIENTS AND METHODS
WCC and CRP were measured prospectively in 98 patients presenting with lower abdominal pain, and the results were correlated with each patient''s outcome.RESULTS
No patients with WCC and CRP both in the normal range had acute appendicitis. Raised WCC and CRP were poor positive predictors of appendicitis, both alone and in combination, and correlated poorly with the development of complications.CONCLUSIONS
This result may have important clinical and economic implications. We suggest that patients experiencing lower abdominal pain, with normal WCC and CRP values, are unlikely to have acute appendicitis and can be safely sent home. 相似文献19.

To determine whether interval resection in asymptomatic patients after 1 or 2 episodes of acute diverticulitis (prophylactic resection) is justified as a means of preventing late inflammatory complications of diverticular disease.Design

Those requiring hospitalization from 1987 to 1995 for treatment of acquired diverticular disease of the colon. Twenty-eight patients underwent elective resection and 154 were treated for inflammatory complications (perforation, fistula, complete large-bowel obstruction).Interventions
Standard surgical management for diverticular disease, but only 3 prophylactic resections were undertaken during this period.Outcome measures
Type of operation, stoma creation and closure, hospital death. In those treated for complicated disease, the effects on outcome of all previous outpatient treatment and hospitalizations.Results
Only 10% of those presenting with complications had been treated conservatively for acute diverticulitis and only 5% had been hospitalized for this reason.Conclusions
