Objective

To assess the clinical efficacy of abdominal acupuncture for subhealth insomnia.

Methods

Eighty-two cases of subhealth insomnia were randomly divided into an observation group (41 cases) and a control group (41 cases). The control group was treated with conventional acupuncture. The observation group was treated with Bo’s abdominal acupuncture on the basis of conventional acupuncture. Six treatments constituted one treatment course. The measuring scale of traditional Chinese medicine syndrome for subhealth state (MSSSHS) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores were compared between the two groups after two courses, to estimate the efficacy of abdominal acupuncture for subhealth insomnia.

Results

One case dropped out from the observation group, while 2 cases dropped out from the control group. The MSSSHS score and PSQI score both declined after the treatment in the two groups (all P<0.05). The MSSSHS and PSQI scores in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (both P<0.05).

Conclusion

The abdominal acupuncture is effective for subhealth insomnia, and it can enhance the effect of conventional acupuncture.

Objective

To observe the clinical effect of Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture on post-stroke depression.

Methods

A total of 70 eligible cases were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table. Patients in the observation group were treated with Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture, whereas patients in the control group were treated with oral Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks. The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Montgomery Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS), and Barthel Index (BI) were used to evaluate the patients’ condition before, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after treatment respectively. In addition, adverse reactions were also recorded.

Results

After 4 weeks of treatment, the HAMD and MADRS scores were significantly decreased in both groups (P<0.05); and the BI scores were significantly increased in both groups (P<0.05). There was no between-group statistical difference in HAMD score (P>0.05); the MADRS score in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05) and the BI score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, there were no between-group statistical differences in all aspects (P>0.05); however, the adverse reactions in the observation group were significantly less than those in the control group.

Conclusion

The Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture is safe and effective for post-stroke depression and can obtain similar efficacy as Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. In addition, it can fast alleviate core symptoms of depression and improve the activities of daily living (ADL) and has fewer adverse reactions.

Objective

To compare the therapeutic effects between the Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling and the routine acupuncture therapy for insomnia due to liver fire disturbing the heart.

Methods

A total of 50 cases with insomnia were randomly divided by the random numberl table into the two groups, 25 cases in each group. The observation group was treated with the Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling, while the control group was treated with the routine acupuncture therapy. The two groups were treated for five sessions per week, ten sessions as a course. After 3-course treatment, the therapeutic effects and the improvement of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were observed.

Results

After treatment for three courses, the total effective rate was 100% in the treatment group and 92% in the control group. The difference in the therapeutic effect between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). After the treatment, the sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, subjective sleep quality, sleeping disturbances, daytime dysfunction, and total PSQI scores in the patients of the two groups were obviously improved in comparing those before treatment, with significant differences (all P<0.01). After treatment, the inter-group differences in the sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, subjective sleep quality, and total PSQI scores were statistically significant (all P<0.01); the differences in the scores of sleeping disturbances and daytime dysfunction is not statistical significant (all P>0.05).

Conclusion

The therapeutic effect of Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling is better for insomnia due to liver fire disturbing the heart than the routine acupuncture therapy.

Objective

To determine the role of intensity of plum-blossom needle tapping in treating alopecia areata.

Methods

The BALB/c mice were randomized into a normal group, a control group, a roller-needle (RN) group, a mild plum-blossom needle (MP) group, and a heavy plum-blossom needle (HP) group. An area of hair was removed by external application of 8% sodium sulfide on BALB/c mice. The hair regrowth, hair follicle changes, and local inflammatory factor changes after cutaneous acupuncture were observed.

Results

After treated with sodium sulfide, the hair was completely removed, the local hair follicles reached the catagen phase, and the expressions of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, and IL-17 were increased. Mice intervened by RN achieved the same hair growth rating as the controls but with thicker hair shafts; mice in the MP group had incomplete and uneven hair growth but thicker hair shafts; mice in the HP group didn’t show hair growth. Pathological analysis revealed significant inflammatory infiltration into the local follicle bulbs and increased catagen-phase follicles in the control group, while RN and MP groups showed significantly increased anagen-phase follicles, coarser individual hairs, and obvious hair shafts. Meanwhile, most of the hair follicles in the HP group were in telogen phase and showed obvious surrounding inflammatory infiltration. RN, MP, and HP significantly down-regulated the increased IL-2, IL-1α, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels (P<0.05), but didn’t notably affect the increased CD34 expression (P>0.05).

Conclusion

Cutaneous acupuncture with heavy stimulation intensity can inhibit hair growth in hair removal mice, while RN, with the lightest stimulation intensity, is unlikely to affect hair growth but may make hair shafts thicker and follicles larger.

Objective

To observe the instant analgesic effect of Governor Vessel-regulating and collateral-unblocking acupuncture method in treating primary headache and to inherit and carry forward the academic achievements of Gao’s acupuncture school in Yanzhao (Hebei Province) area.

Methods

Eighty eligible primary headache patients were randomized into an observation group and a control group following their visiting sequence, 40 patients in each group. The observation group was intervened by Yanzhao Gao’s Governor Vessel-regulating and collateral-unblocking acupuncture, and the control group was intervened by ordinary acupuncture method. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the headache intensity before and after the first treatment session in the two groups, to compare the instant analgesic effect of the two acupuncture methods.

Results

After the first treatment session, the VAS scores dropped significantly in both groups (both P<0.05). The change of VAS score after the initial treatment in the observation group was significantly different from that in the control group (P<0.05). The percentage of patients with headache completely vanished instantly after the first treatment was markedly higher in the observation group than that in the control group (P<0.05).

Conclusion

The two acupuncture methods both can produce a significant instant analgesic effect in treating primary headache, while Yanzhao Gao’s Governor Vessel-regulating and collateral-unblocking acupuncture method is superior to ordinary acupuncture method.

Objective

To investigate the effectiveness and safety of manual acupuncture for memory loss and sleep quality in chronic insomniacs.

Methods

A total of 60 eligible participants were enrolled and randomized into either a treatment group or a control group, with 30 cases in each group. The treatment group was intervened by manual acupuncture whereas the control group was given sham acupuncture. In the two groups, the interventions were offered once every other day and three times a week, for 8 weeks in total. Before and after the treatment, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and eventrelated potentials (ERPs) were used to assess the patients’ sleep quality and memory, respectively. Meanwhile, adverse events were monitored and recorded.

Results

After 8-week treatment, both the treatment group and the control group showed a significant decrease in the PSQI global score (P<0.001, P<0.01), and the decrease in the treatment group was more significant than that in the control group (P<0.001). The intra-group comparisons of ERPs indicated that, the latencies of N1 and P3 were shortened and the amplitudes of N1 and P3 were increased in the treatment group after the intervention, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05, P<0.001); in the control group, there were no significant changes in the latency and amplitude after the treatment (P>0.05). The between-group comparisons of ERPs showed that the treatment group was more effective than the control group in shortening the latency of P3 (P<0.01).

Conclusion

Acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment option for chronic insomnia coupled with memory impairment.

Objective

To observe the effect of acupuncture plus medium-frequency electric stimulation on bladder function after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer.

Methods

A total of 170 patients confirmed by biopsy and surgical pathology and treated with radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer were randomly divided into an acupuncture group, an observation group and a control group by random digital table. Fifty-six cases in the acupuncture group were treated with acupuncture after surgery, one session each day, till the extubation day; 58 cases in the observation group were treated with acupuncture plus medium-frequency electric stimulation after surgery, one session each day, till the extubation day; and 56 cases in the control group didn’t receive any intervention, and the catheter was retained till the extubation day. On the postoperative day 14, all groups were dealt with catheterization to determine the residual urine volume, in order to observe the occurrence rate of urinary retention and the recovery of bladder function and to compare the differences of the therapeutic effects among the groups.

Results

The occurrence rates of urinary retention were respectively 16.1%, 20.7% and 46.4% in the acupuncture group, observation group and control group, with significant differences (P<0.05). When comparing the acupuncture group and the observation group with the control group, there were significant differences (both P<0.05). In comparison between the acupuncture group and the observation group, there was no significant difference (P>0.05). The recovery rates of bladder function in the three group were respectively 42.9%, 60.3% and 41.1% without significant differences (P>0.05). Moreover, there were no significant between-group differences (P>0.05), but acupuncture plus medium-frequency electric stimulation showed a better tendency.

Conclusion

The single application of acupuncture therapy is effective and able to prevent urinary retention after radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Acupuncture plus medium-frequency electric stimulation can effectively enhance the recovery of bladder function and reduce the residual urine volume in the bladder to the maximum.
