BACKGROUND: Hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitor type 1 (HAI-1) and type 2 (HAI-2) are Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitors for hepatocyte growth factor activator (HGFA). We attempted to clarify whether serum levels of HAI-1 and HAI-2 could be a useful marker in patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: Serum levels of HAI-1 and HAI-2 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 27 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 118 patients with prostate cancer. RESULTS: The mean serum levels of HAI-1 in patients with prostate cancer were significantly higher than those in patients with BPH. Furthermore, the serum HAI-1 levels in patients with distant metastasis and hormone resistant prostate cancer were significantly elevated compared with those in patients with organ-confined diseases. There were no significant differences in serum HAI-2 levels among prostate cancer subgroups according to clinical stage. Significantly elevated levels of HAI-1 were detected in 38 patients with prostate cancer before any treatment. CONCLUSIONS: HAI-1 may be a potential tumor marker for prostate cancer. Further studies in large groups of patients are needed to define the clinical value of HAI-1.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) is a stromally derived growth factor important in mediating androgen induced activities in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. We assessed whether serum KGF could be used as a molecular marker in patients with prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a modified double sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we measured serum KGF in 56 men with prostate cancer and 81 men with BPH. Comparative analyses were made with total serum prostate specific antigen (PSA), disease stage and clinical grade. RESULTS: Following optimization, a sensitive and reproducible assay for serum KGF measurement was developed. Serum KGF levels tend to be higher in men with BPH compared to those with prostate cancer (1,242 and 828 pg./ml., respectively). A weak but significant linear relationship between PSA and KGF (p = 0.034) was found in patients with BPH. There was no association between KGF and tumor grade or stage but there was a strong positive linear relationship between PSA and KGF (p = 0.006, R(2) = 68.3%) in low grade tumors. In those men with serum PSA less than 10 ng./ml. KGF levels were significantly higher in BPH compared to prostate cancer cases (965 +/- 245 and 133 +/- 61.3 pg./ml., respectively, p = 0.0058). Using a KGF threshold range of 500 to 900 pg./ml., specificity for detecting BPH was 88% to 100% and the positive predictive value was 92% to 100%. CONCLUSIONS: We have optimized a reproducible and sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay system for the measurement of serum KGF. Overall KGF levels tend to be lower in patients with prostate cancer than with BPH. In patients with serum PSA less than 10 ng./ml. serum KGF levels were significantly higher in the BPH compared to the prostate cancer group. A large prospective study is indicated to assess the role of serum KGF measurement in patients with prostate cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine that plays a central role in host defense due to its wide range of immune and hematopoietic activities. It is found in high levels in human ejaculate, and has recently been found to regulate prostate-specific protein expression in prostate cancer cells through nonsteroidal activation of the androgen receptor. IL-6 may be a candidate mediator of morbidity in patients with metastatic disease. We attempted to evaluate the potential of circulating IL-6 levels as a marker of disease progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum IL-6, prostate specific antigen (PSA), percent free PSA (%fPSA), and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) were measured using commercially available assays in 407 men, including 15 controls. The rest of the study population had clinical or histologic evidence of prostate diseases, including 41 patients with chronic prostatitis, 167 with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 8 with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), 88 with localized prostate cancer, 22 with local recurrence after treatment of primary tumor, 4 with advanced untreated disease (nodal or bony metastases), 23 with advanced hormone dependent disease, and 39 with advanced hormone refractory disease (PSA > 1.0 ng/ml while on hormone treatment and/or evidence of disease progression). None had history of concurrent malignancy or acute inflammatory condition. Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance and Spearman's correlation analysis were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Serum levels of IL-6 were significantly elevated in patients with clinically evident hormone refractory disease (5.7 +/- 1.9 pg/ml) and statistical significance was seen when comparing the elevated serum IL-6 levels to those in normal controls, prostatitis, BPH, and localized and recurrent disease, (P values < 0.01). Compared to serum levels of controls and BPH, PSA was significantly elevated in advanced untreated disease and hormone refractory groups (P < 0.05). Percent fPSA was significantly lower in all cancer patients but the hormone refractory. Serum PSMA was elevated in advanced untreated prostate cancer. Serum IL-6 showed positive correlation with PSMA and negative correlation with serum PSA but did not attain statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: Serum IL-6 levels are significantly elevated in hormone-refractory prostate cancer patients and may be a surrogate marker of the androgen independent phenotype.  相似文献

To clarify whether serum levels of interleukin-11 (IL-11) could be a useful marker in patients with prostate cancer, serum IL-11 was determined in 73 and 23 men with prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), respectively, before treatment. There were no statistical differences of IL-11 levels between patients with prostate cancer and BPH. Patients with hormone-resistant prostate cancer had a significantly higher level of IL-11 than those with untreated cancer. BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) play an important role in regulation of prostate cancer cell growth. We studied the prognostic significance of serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels, and IGF-1/prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and IGFBP-3/PSA ratios in patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: Serum levels of IGF-1, IGFBP-3, and PSA were determined in 112 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. Serum samples from 32 patients with histologically confined benign prostatatic hyperplasia (BPH) served as control. RESULTS: Serum IGF-1 levels were significantly higher in advanced prostate cancer (n = 84) than in BPH patients (P < 0.01). IGFBP-3 levels were significantly lower in patients with advanced prostate cancer than in localized tumor (n = 28) or BPH (P < 0.05, each). Univariate analysis showed that serum PSA, IGF-1/PSA ratio, IGFBP-3/PSA ratio, T, N and M classifications correlated significantly with relapse-free survival of advanced prostate cancer patients treated with hormonal therapy. Multivariate analysis identified IGFBP-3/PSA ratio as the only significant variable for relapse-free survival (odds ratio 5.81, 95% CI 1.57-21.51). IGFBP-3/PSA ratio was also an independent predictor of cause-specific survival (stepwise analysis, odds ratio 4.86, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that IGFBP-3/PSA ratio might be a useful prognostic marker of advanced prostate cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Several investigators have revealed that urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its receptor (uPAR) are overexpressed in serum as well as in tumor tissues in patients with various types of cancer. In this study, we examined whether the serum levels of uPA and uPAR could be used as predictors of the progression and prognosis of prostate cancer. METHODS: Serum levels of uPA and uPAR in 54 healthy controls, 62 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), and 72 patients with prostate cancer were measured by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS: The mean serum levels of uPA and uPAR in patients with prostate cancer were significantly higher than those in healthy controls and patients with BPH. Furthermore, the serum uPA and uPAR levels in prostate cancer patients with metastasis were significantly elevated compared with those in patients without metastasis. Among patients who underwent radical prostatectomy, the serum levels of uPA and uPAR in patients with pathologically organ-confined disease were significantly lower than in those with advanced disease. The overall survival rate of prostate cancer patients with elevated serum levels of either uPA or uPAR, or of both, was significantly lower than that of patients with normal serum levels of uPA and uPAR. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate that the elevation of serum levels of either uPA or uPAR, or of both, could be used as new predictors of progression and prognosis in patients with prostate cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in prostate cancer has not been fully understood. Moreover, the serum CGRP level in prostate cancer patients has never been reported. We measured the serum CGRP levels in untreated prostate cancer patients to elucidate its clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 36 serum samples from prostate cancer patients. All patients had never received any treatment. Serum CGRP was measured by immunoradiometric assay, and we analysed the association between serum CGRP level and clinicopathological factors. RESULTS: Serum CGRP levels in the patients with higher clinical stages and histological grade were significantly higher than in those with lower stages and grade, respectively. But the levels did not correlate with the patient's age, liver or renal functions, serum prostate-specific antigen levels. CONCLUSION: Serum CGRP levels were significantly elevated in the patients with high grade or high stage untreated prostate cancer patients. Measurement of the serum CGRP may be a useful predictor of staging or grading of prostate cancer in the untreated prostate cancer patients.  相似文献

Human seminal plasma contains an immunoglobulin gamma binding factor (IgBF) with an estimated molecular weight of 16 kD under reducing condition. IgBF was detected only in the prostate, including benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and neoplasm. The present study was performed to determine whether IgBF is a useful prostatic marker. Serum IgBF levels were measured in patients with prostatic tumors and in control patients without tumor by radioimmunoassay. Serum prostatic-specific antigen (PSA), the standard prostatic marker, was also determined. Serum IgBF levels in patients with prostate cancer were significantly higher than those in age-matched controls (P < 0.05). Also, patients with BPH tended to have elevated IgBF levels than the controls, although the values were not statistically significant. In control patients, serum IgBF levels increased with advancing age. There was no correlation between serum levels of IgBF and PSA in patients with prostate cancer. Using cut-off level at 28.5 ng/ml (2 S.D. above the mean IgBF level of age-matched control), the sensitivities were 41.2% (7117) for prostate cancer, 23.1% (6/26) for BPH, and 5.6% (1/18) for control patients. In conclusion, serum IgBF is a useful marker in the diagnosis of patients with prostatic tumor, and in evaluating the course of treatment. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

目的 :提高对前列腺增生术后前列腺癌的认识。 方法 :回顾总结 1 2例 (年龄 6 3~ 82岁 )前列腺增生术后前列腺癌患者的临床资料。前列腺增生术后 1 0个月~ 1 4年 ,平均 5 .6年 ,发现前列腺癌。患者因排尿困难、血尿、疼痛而再次就诊。发现前列腺特异抗原 (PSA)异常 1 1例 ,前列腺结节 8例。B期 3例、C期 3例、D期 6例。 1 2例均行睾丸切除术 ,其中 1 0例加用雄激素受体阻断剂 ,3例行经尿道前列腺切除术 (TURP)。 结果 :随访 4个月~ 8年 ,平均 4 .5年。死亡 3例 ,病变稳定 6例 ,2例病变进展。 结论 :前列腺增生手术不能预防前列腺癌的发生 ,血清PSA和直肠指检是前列腺增生术后前列腺癌诊断的主要方法  相似文献

BACKGROUND: YKL-40, also called human cartilage glycoprotein-39 (HC gp-39) and chitotriosidase are homologs of family 18 glycosyl hydrolases secreted by human macrophages. Although high levels of YKL-40 and chitotriosidase are associated with several diseases, the physiological functions of these enzymes are still unclear. YKL-40, a growth factor for connective tissue cells, a migration factor for endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells, is expressed by several types of solid human carcinoma, including prostate carcinoma. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare serum YKL-40 levels and chitotriosidase activity both in benign prostatic hyperplasia and primary prostate cancer. METHODS: YKL-40 and chitotriosidase were determined in serum samples from 93 patients with primary prostate cancer and 61 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Serum YKL-40 levels were measured by ELISA and chitotriosidase activity was determined by fluorometer. PSA levels were also measured by using an automated system. RESULTS: Serum YKL-40 levels were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in patients with prostate cancer compared with control group whereas there was no significant difference between BPH and control group. Serum chitotriosidase activities were significantly higher in carcinoma patients with high Gleason score than the control group (P < 0.001). No significant difference was observed in BPH patients (P > 0.05). Both YKL-40 and chitotriosidase were found statistically significant higher in primary prostate cancer and BPH. CONCLUSION: High serum YKL-40 levels in patients with primary prostate cancer indicate that YKL-40 may have a function in the progression of malignant diseases, whereas no significant elevation was observed in benign prostatic hyperplasia. Meanwhile, high serum chitotriosidase activity was observed only in patients with Gleason high grade, indicating possible macrophage involvement in cancer progression. Further studies are needed to elucidate the biologic role of YKL-40 in cancer aggressiveness and in progression of malignant diseases.  相似文献

目的:探讨前列腺增生(BPH)术后发生前列腺癌(PCa)的临床特征。方法:报告12例BPH术后发生PCa患者的临床资料,PCa距BPH手术时间为10个月~14年,平均5.6年。患者BPH后因尿频、尿急、排尿困难、血尿、疼痛而再次就诊。检查血清PSA异常11例,前列腺结节8例。B期3例、C期3例、D期6例。12例均行双侧睾丸切除术[白膜下睾丸切除4例,3例行经尿道前列腺电切术(TURP)]。联合雄激素阻断治疗10例;内照射治疗骨痛3例。结果:随访4个月~8年,平均4、5年。死亡3例,病变稳定6例,2例病变进展.1例失访。结论:BPH手术不能预防PCa的发生;血清PSA和直肠指检是BPH术后前列腺癌诊断的主要方法。  相似文献

Serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) is currently the best blood marker for prostate cancer. However, low specificity for detection of prostate cancer, especially in the gray zone of PSA, is a problem. We evaluated the clinical significance of PSA density (PSAD) in gray zone PSA cases with conversion of serum PSA to a Stanford reference value. In a series of histologically confirmed 63 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients and 234 prostate cancer patients, 36 BPH patients and 25 prostate cancer patients had gray zone PSA levels. Serum PSA was measured with the Markit-F or Markit-M PA assay. All data were converted to Stanford reference values. We used transabdominal ultrasound to determine prostate volume. PSAD was determined as the serum PSA/prostate volume ratio. The mean PSA values for BPH and prostate cancer were 6.42 +/- 1.80 and 7.80 +/- 2.15 ng/ml (p = 0.0116), respectively, and prostate volume was 33.4 +/- 14.1 ml and 17.1 +/- 8.2 ml, respectively (p < 0.0001). The mean PSAD for prostate cancer was 0.572 +/- 0.363 while that for BPH was 0.218 +/- 0.085 (p = 0.0001). Cut-off values with sensitivity > 90% were 0.218 for PSAD and 30 ml for prostate volume. At these cut-off values, specificity reached 56% for each marker. In discriminating prostate cancer from BPH in the gray zone of PSA, PSAD demonstrated better performance than PSA.  相似文献

Purpose

The aim of this study was to clarify the significance of serum hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1 receptor antagonist (ra) levels in the evaluation of disease status in jaundice-free survivors with biliary atresia after Kasai operation.

Patients and Methods

Serum concentrations of HGF, IL-6, and IL-ra were measured in 31 long-term jaundice-free patients with biliary atresia after Kasai operation and 29 controls. Patients were divided into 4 groups: group A (n = 8), normal liver function; group B (n = 9), mild liver dysfunction without portal hypertension; group C (n = 9), moderate liver dysfunction with controllable portal hypertension; and group D (n = 5), receiving liver transplantation.

Results

Serum IL-6 levels were significantly higher in patients than in controls. There was no difference in serum IL-6 levels among groups B, C, and D. Serum IL-1ra levels were elevated according to liver dysfunction. Serum HGF levels in group D were significantly higher than in controls and the other groups. Serum hyarulonic acid levels were positively correlated with serum levels of IL-1ra and HGF.

Conclusions

Elevation of serum IL-1ra and HGF levels correlated with the progression of liver fibrosis and dysfunction. In particular, serum HGF levels could be used as a predictor for requiring liver transplantation.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Scatter factor (SF), also known as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), has been shown to induce proliferation, scattering and invasiveness in human prostate cancer cell lines. In this study we determined the serum level of SF-HGF in men with metastatic prostate cancer compared to those with localized prostate cancer and without prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum samples were obtained from men with biopsy proved adenocarcinoma of the prostate and radiographic evidence of metastatic disease, those with biopsy proved adenocarcinoma of the prostate and clinically localized disease, and those with negative sextant prostate biopsies. Serum SF-HGF was determined using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. RESULTS: Of the 108 men enrolled in our study 52 had negative sextant biopsies, 36 had clinically localized cancer and 20 had metastatic disease. The serum level in men with metastatic disease was significantly elevated (mean 2,117 pg./ml., range 820 to 6,403) compared to that in men with localized cancer and without prostate cancer (mean 974 pg./ml., range 437 to 2,132 and 700, range 272 to 1,875, respectively, p = 9.5 x 10(-15)). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the association of ln (SF-HGF) with prostate cancer persisted after controlling for patient age and ln (prostate specific antigen) (p = 3.1 x 10(-4)). CONCLUSIONS: Serum SF-HGF is increased in men with metastatic prostate cancer. SF-HGF levels are associated with metastatic prostate cancer independent of the prostate specific antigen level and patient age. These data imply that SF-HGF may be an important serum marker for prostate cancer.  相似文献

PURPOSE: It is established that the percentage of free prostate specific antigen (PSA) in serum is low in patients with prostate cancer. An unanswered question is whether a low percentage of free PSA can be explained by high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia alone. We compared the percentage of free PSA in men with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia alone, prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and a normal prostate (that is normal digital rectal examination and PSA less than or equal to 2.5 ng./ml.). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From October 1994 through December 1997, 48 men were diagnosed with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia without concomitant prostate cancer. Of these men 43 with a mean age plus or minus standard deviation of 67.4 +/- 7.8 years comprised our study group. To date none has been diagnosed with cancer during followup. Serum free and total PSA levels were measured, and the percentage of free PSA was calculated. The percentage of free PSA in the 43 men was compared to that in 50 with prostate cancer (mean age 65.4 +/- 7.8 years), 50 with biopsy proved BPH (67 +/- 7) and 43 with a normal prostate (61 +/- 8). RESULTS: There was no significant difference in mean total serum PSA in patients with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, prostate cancer or BPH. The percentage of free PSA was significantly lower in patients with prostate cancer (14.9 +/- 6.5%) than those with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (20.8 +/- 7.1%), BPH (20.1 +/- 7.3%) or a normal prostate (27.7 +/- 12.2%). There was also no significant difference in the percentage of free PSA between men with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (20.8 +/- 7.1%) and those with BPH (20.1 +/- 7.3%). Additionally, men with a normal prostate had a higher percentage of free PSA (27.7%) than those with BPH (20.1%), high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (20.8%) or prostate cancer (14.9%). CONCLUSIONS: The percentages of free PSA in men with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and BPH are similar, and significantly higher than those found in men with prostate cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a tumour and/or bone derived factor that may protect tumour cells from apoptosis. In this study, we have measured serum OPG levels in untreated prostate cancer patients with advanced prostate cancer compared to patients with organ confined disease and in treated patients receiving androgen ablation. METHODS: Serum OPG levels were measured by ELISA in samples collected from 104 patients with either newly diagnosed (n = 59) or advanced prostate cancer treated by androgen ablation (n = 45) and compared with levels in serum from patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (n = 10) and young healthy men (n = 10). RESULTS: Untreated patients with locally advanced disease had significantly higher OPG levels than those with organ confined disease. Patients with advanced disease responding to androgen ablation (serum PSA < 1 ng/ml) had serum OPG levels that were significantly lower than those with clinically progressing disease (PSA > 10 ng/ml). OPG levels in the latter were not significantly different from levels in patients with early signs of biochemical progression (PSA >1 but <10 ng/ml). CONCLUSIONS: OPG is a potential new marker, which is elevated in the serum of patients with advanced prostate cancer and may be an indicator of early disease progression.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We investigated free and total prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and free/total (f/t) ratio in the fasting saliva and compared them with the serum levels in normal individuals, in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. Our aim was to determine free and total PSA and f/t ratio in saliva and to improve and simplify the differentiation between BPH and prostate cancer by using saliva as an alternative to serum. METHODS: Serum and fasting saliva concentrations of free and total PSA were measured in 35 men with BPH, 16 men with stage D prostate cancer, and 25 healthy men. Serum and fasting saliva samples were collected at the same time and were analyzed on the same day at our laboratory with microparticle enzyme immunoassay technology. RESULTS: For the total of 76 men, there was a significant correlation between free and total PSA levels in each sample (r = 0.97 for serum and r = 0.44 for saliva, p<0.001). Although there was a significant difference between three groups for serum-free and total PSA levels and serum f/t ratios, no significant difference was determined between groups for salivary free and total PSA levels and salivary f/t ratios. No correlations were found between patient age and salivary PSA levels. CONCLUSIONS: Fasting salivary free and total PSA levels are not effected by high serum levels of prostatic origin. Although there was a significant difference between mean serum and salivary levels of free and total PSA in each group, the f/t ratio of saliva was very close to the serum ratio of normal subjects. Determination of free and total PSA in saliva to improve and simplify the differentiation between prostate cancer and BPH is not suitable for use as alternative measurement of serum.  相似文献

目的 通过检测前列腺癌患者血清前梯度蛋白2(AGR2)的水平,探讨其在前列腺癌患者中的临床应用价值.方法 收集前列腺癌患者治疗前后血液标本46例,良性前列腺增生(BPH)患者血液标本20例,健康对照组血液标本20例,用酶联免疫吸附测定法检测三组血清AGR2水平.分析血清AGR2与前列腺癌病理分级及临床分期的关系.结果 ①前列腺癌组患者治疗前血清AGR2水平均明显高于BPH组和健康对照组(P<0.01),BPH组和健康对照组之间差异无统计学意义(P>0.05);②前列腺癌组患者治疗后血清AGR2较治疗前明显降低(P<0.01),行前列腺癌手术患者术前血清AGR2水平明显高于术后(P<0.01),行内分泌治疗的前列腺癌患者治疗前AGR2水平明显高于治疗后(P<0.01);③治疗前血清AGR2水平与前列腺癌临床分期、Gleason病理分级明显相关(P<0.05),血清AGR2水平与PSA水平显著相关(P<0.01);④ROC曲线下面积0.792(95%CI:0.698 ~ 0.886),当临界值为13.75 ng/mL,灵敏度71.7%,特异度75.0%.结论 前列腺癌患者血清AGR2水平增高,与临床分期及Gleason病理分级有关,提示AGR2在前列腺癌诊断、恶性程度以及疗效判断具有一定的临床意义.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of clinical prostate cancer in the Arab population is among the lowest in the world. High serum IGF-1 level has been implicated as a possible risk factor for the development of prostate cancer in Caucasians. The purpose of this study was to determine serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels in healthy Arab men and in Arab men with newly diagnosed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer, and to compare these values with values reported in Caucasians. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Subjects were recruited in two groups: (a) indigenous, healthy Arab men aged 15-90 y (n = 383); (b) Arab men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer (n = 30) or BPH (n = 40). Blood was obtained from fasting patients and volunteers, between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. The serum concentrations of IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were determined using Immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) kits. RESULTS: As in Caucasians, serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels declined with age in Arab men. The mean +/- s.d. of serum IGF-1 levels in healthy Arab men in the age group 15-20, 51-60, 61-70 y were lower (376.2 +/- 153.2, 134.9 +/- 105.7 and 89.6 +/- 48.4 ng/ml, respectively), compared to values reported for similarly aged Caucasians. Arab men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer had significantly higher serum IGF-1 level (P < 0.01) and lower IGFBP-3 levels (P < 0.01) compared to age-matched Arabs without the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Arab men have lower serum IGF-1 levels compared to Caucasians and this may be an important factor in the explanation of the low incidence of prostate cancer in the Arab population.  相似文献
