In this study examination is given to the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) in a large community sample of adolescents. Additionally, a comparison was made between the anxiety scores of this Italian adolescent cohort (N = 1975) and a comparative Dutch adolescent cohort (N = 1115).Findings revealed that a five-factor structure of the SCARED applied not only to the Italian adolescents from the general community, but also to boys and girls, and to early and middle adolescents. Moreover, sex and age differences on anxiety scores within the Italian sample were found to be consistent with previous studies of adolescent anxiety disorders. Finally, Italian adolescents reported higher anxiety scores than their Dutch peers.Findings of this study highlight that the SCARED is a valid screening instrument to rate anxiety symptoms of Italian adolescents.  相似文献

BackgroundThis study examined the association between stress-related coping strategies and Internet addiction and the moderating effect of depression in a sample of Taiwanese college students.MethodA total of 500 college students (238 men and 262 women) participated in this study. Internet addiction was assessed using the Chen Internet Addiction Scale. Participants’ stress coping strategies and depressive symptoms were measured using the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced and the Beck Depression Inventory-II, respectively. We used t and chi-square tests to examine differences in demographic characteristics, depression, and stress coping strategies between participants with and without Internet addiction. Significant variables were used in a logistic regression model to examine the association between stress coping strategies and Internet addiction and the moderating effect of depression on the association.ResultsResults indicated that use of restraint coping was negatively associated with Internet addiction (odds ratio [OR] = 0.886, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.802–0.977), whereas denial (OR = 1.177, 95% CI: 1.029–1.346) and mental disengagement (OR = 2.673, 95% CI: 1.499–4.767) were positively associated with Internet addiction. Depression had a moderating effect on the association between denial and Internet addiction (OR = 0.701, 95% CI: 0.530–0.927).ConclusionsStress coping strategies and depression are important factors to evaluate when developing intervention programs targeting college undergraduate students with Internet addiction.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of the present study was to assess stress coping strategies employed by patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and determine whether these approaches were associated with other psychopathological features. Ineffective stress coping strategies can have a variety of unhealthy consequences fueling psychopathology just as psychopathology can also have an impact on stress coping. Because of this, the study of stress coping has the potential to inform our understanding of the PNES condition and underscore a potential target for psychological treatment.MethodsEighty-two consecutive patients with PNES were studied using the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). The CISS is a self-rating coping strategies scale that has three main subscales (Task-Oriented, Emotion-Focused, and Avoidance-Oriented). Other psychological variables that were thought to potentially influence the chosen coping mechanisms including alexithymia, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anger expression and select scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2-RF (MMPI 2-RF) were also evaluated.ResultsFifty patients (60.9%) endorsed using at least one coping strategy that was 1.5 standard deviations or more away from the normal adult mean. Over 30% of the participants endorsed using elevated Emotion-Focused coping strategies (T score  65), and just over 25% endorsed underusing Task-Oriented coping strategies (T score  35). Elevations in avoidance strategies were endorsed by only 15.9% of the respondents. ANOVA comparing T scores between the coping strategies was significant (F = 13.4, p = .0001) with a significantly lower Task-Oriented strategy than Emotion-Focused (p = .001) and Avoidance (p = .005) strategies.Patients with high scores of Emotion-Focused coping strategies also had significantly high scores on diverse psychopathology factors including elevations on depressive mood, intrusive experiences, anger state, and general anger scores. In contrast, those who used Task-Oriented strategies and who used Avoidance-Focused strategies had less psychopathology including low positive emotion scores (RC2).ConclusionNearly one-third of patients with PNES tended to use the less effective Emotion-Oriented coping strategies and one fourth reported underusing the more effective Task-focused strategies. Substantial differences were noted between coping strategies with a significantly lower Task-Oriented strategy than Emotion-Focused and Avoidance strategies. In addition, high Emotion-Focused coping was seen in patients with underlying psychological symptoms that were not observed in other coping strategies. This information supports the relevance of assessing stress coping in patients with PNES because it allows the identification of useful behavioral targets for the psychotherapist.  相似文献

PurposeSymptoms of depression are common in children and adolescents with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but information about underlying developmental factors is limited. Depression is often linked to aspects of emotional functioning such as coping strategies, but in children with ASD difficulties with social interactions are also a likely contributor to depressive symptoms.MethodologyWe examined several aspects of emotional coping (approach, avoidant, maladaptive) and social functioning (victimization, negative friendship interactions) and their relation to depression symptoms in children with ASD (N = 63) and typically developing (TD) peers (N = 57). Children completed a battery of self-report questionnaires.ResultsLess approach and avoidant, but more maladaptive coping strategies, and poor social functioning were uniquely associated with more symptoms of depression in children with ASD. Only less approach and more maladaptive coping were uniquely associated with depression severity in TD boys.ConclusionsUnlike TD boys, boys with ASD who report using avoidant strategies to deal with stressful situations report fewer symptoms of depression, suggesting that this may be an adaptive emotion regulation strategy. However, understanding the role of over-arousal in this process, inferences about long-term effects of this strategy, its causality and direction of effects will require additional research.  相似文献

To determine the effectiveness of low intensity behavioral treatment (LIBT) supplementing regular treatment in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) standardized tests of cognition, adaptive behavior, interpersonal relations, play, language, characteristics of autism, emotional and behavioral problems, behavioral flexibility, early social communication, and maternal stress were administered in a treatment group (n = 20), receiving 4–10 h LIBT per week and a control group (n = 20) receiving treatment as usual. At baseline, no differences were found between groups (mean chronological age: 5.3 years; mean developmental age: 1.11 years) on several key variables, but after two years of intervention the treatment group outperformed the control group on IQ, developmental age, adaptive behavior, interpersonal relations, play and receptive language, and less autistic symptoms were seen in treatment group. Following intervention, no differences between groups were found on expressive language, behavioral flexibility and maternal stress. Progress in developmental age, adaptive behavior, interpersonal relations, play and receptive and expressive language was clinically and reliably significant for the majority of the LIBT group.  相似文献

IntroductionTo determine sociodemographic and psychological factors associated with bullying behavior among young adolescents in Malaysia.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study of four hundred ten 12-year-old adolescents from seven randomly sampled schools in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sociodemographic features of the adolescents and their parents, bullying behavior (Malaysian Bullying Questionnaire), ADHD symptoms (Conners Rating Scales), and internalizing and externalizing behavior (Child Behaviour Checklist) were obtained from adolescents, parents and teachers, respectively.ResultsOnly male gender (OR = 7.071, p = 0.01*, CI = 1.642–30.446) was a significant sociodemographic factor among bullies. Predominantly hyperactive (OR = 2.285, p = 0.00*, CI = 1.507–3.467) and inattentive ADHD symptoms reported by teachers (OR = 1.829, p = 0.03*, CI = 1.060–3.154) and parents (OR = 1.709, p = 0.03*, CI = 1.046–2.793) were significant risk factors for bullying behavior while combined symptoms reported by young adolescents (OR = 0.729, p = 0.01*, CI = 0.580–0.915) and teachers (OR = 0.643, p = 0.02*, CI = 0.440–0.938) were protective against bullying behavior despite the influence of conduct behavior (OR = 3.160, p = 0.00*, CI = 1.600–6.241). Internalizing behavior, that is, withdrawn (OR = 0.653, p = 0.04*, CI = 0.436–0.977) and somatic complaints (OR = 0.619, p = 0.01*, CI = 0.430–0.889) significantly protect against bullying behavior.DiscussionsRecognizing factors associated with bullying behavior, in particular factors distinctive to the local population, facilitates in strategizing effective interventions for school bullying among young adolescents in Malaysian schools.  相似文献

Objectives

In the face of social maladjustment among adolescents experiencing difficulties in Kinshasa, the coping strategies deployed need to be considered for the effectiveness of interventions in this population. The main objective was to explore the coping strategies adopted by these adolescents according to their psychosocial problems. The secondary objective was to determine the factors associated with the adoption of these coping strategies.

Method

This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Health Zone of Masina II in Kinshasa between May and October 2010. Sixty-six adolescents experiencing difficulties (27♂, 39♀) aged 17.53 ± 2.33 years having no psychiatric disorders participated in a semi-structured two-phase evaluation. The following measures were used: temperament according to Eysenck, parenting style according to Baumrind, maternal attachment by way of an adult attachment interview adapted for adolescents, and coping strategies according to Spirito's Kidcope. Chi2 tests or Fisher exact tests were used with P < 0.05.

Results

Emotional resolution was the most commonly exploited coping strategy (56.7%). Coping strategies were associated with each of the psychosocial problems (X2 = 152.44, df = 45, P < 0.0001): distraction was associated with addiction (P = 0.0009), social withdrawal with witchcraft (P = 0.0136), blaming others with antisocial behavior (P = 0.0059), and self-criticism (P = 0.0297) and emotional regulation (P = 0.0130), with early pregnancy and motherhood, social support for street children (P = 0.0024) and resignation towards abuse (P = 0.0019). The adoption of these coping strategies varied according to gender (P < 0.0001), temperament (P = 0.0010), parenting style (P = 0.0119), maternal attachment (P = 0.0265) and assignment of roles (P = 0.0107).

Discussion

By this emotional resolution, which may be inherent in the transition from childhood to adolescence, these adolescents experiencing difficulties were trying to reduce tension rather than solving their psychosocial problems. The specificity of the different dysfunctional coping strategies according to the psychosocial problems was related to certain individual and environmental factors. Coping strategies for psychosocial problems are modes of flight or distancing from internal tension, indicating the potential presence of unmet needs. This could foster a sense of lack of competence underpinning the social maladjustment and psychological distress that deserves to be elucidated.

Conclusion

Support for adolescents experiencing difficulties should focus on strengthening socialization functions and adaptive resources, both individual and family, through parental guidance and interpersonal psychotherapy adapted to each situation and oriented towards processes of resilience.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe aims for this study were to determine the prevalence of sleep-bruxism among young children, explore child behavior problems that may be associated with sleep-bruxism, and identify relations among sleep-bruxism, health problems, and neurocognitive performance.MethodsThe current study was a retrospective analysis of parent report surveys, and behavioral and neurocognitive assessments. Parents of 1953 preschool and 2888 first grade children indicated their child’s frequency of bruxism during sleep. A subsample of preschool children (n = 249) had additional behavioral, as well as neurocognitive assessments. Among the subsample, parents also reported on their child’s health, and completed the Child Behavioral Checklist; children were administered the Differential Ability Scales, and Pre-Reading Abilities subtests of the Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment.Results36.8% of preschoolers and 49.6% of first graders were reported to brux ⩾1 time per week. Among the preschool subsample, bruxing was independently associated with increased internalizing behaviors (β = .17). Bruxism was also associated with increased health problems (β = .19), and increased health problems were associated with decreased neurocognitive performance (β = .22).ConclusionsThe prevalence of sleep-bruxism was high. A dynamic and potentially clinically relevant relation exists among sleep-bruxism, internalizing behaviors, health, and neurocognition. Pediatric sleep-bruxism may serve as a sentinel marker for possible adverse health conditions, and signal a need for early intervention. These results support the need for an interdisciplinary approach to pediatric sleep medicine, dentistry, and psychology.  相似文献

There is a scarcity of research on the relationship between presence of problem behaviors and psychotropic medication use in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants in the current study were children and adolescents ages 3–17 years who were sorted into four groups: ASD on psychotropic medication (N = 100), ASD not on psychotropic medication (N = 147), typically developing on medication (N = 48), and typically developing not on medication (N = 168). A one-way multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was conducted to determine the relationship between medication use and rates of internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Post hoc analyses revealed that children with ASD on psychotropic medication evinced significantly more externalizing behaviors than children with ASD not on medication. However, the two groups did not significantly differ on rates of internalizing behaviors. These results suggest that psychotropic medications may often be prescribed to manage externalizing behaviors. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature.  相似文献

For youth with epilepsy, comorbid psychiatric conditions, such as depression and anxiety, require further examination as they carry increased risk for reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The current study assessed whether rates of depression, anxiety, and withdrawal behaviors differed based on seizure location. Data included parental ratings on the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-2) and the Quality of Life in Childhood Epilepsy (QOLCE) questionnaire for 132 children and adolescents (mean age = 11.34, SD = 3.95) with generalized or partial (i.e., frontal [FLE] or temporal lobe epilepsy [TLE]) epilepsy. Our results identified clinically significant internalizing psychopathology in nearly half of our sample (41%). Although rates of internalizing behavior were similar between generalized and partial groups, children and adolescents with TLE demonstrated higher rates of depression compared to youth with FLE. No effects of laterality on internalizing behaviors were identified between TLE and FLE groups. Finally, for youth with TLE, parental depression ratings along with current number of antiepileptic medications (AEDs) were found to be significant barriers to HRQOL above and beyond anxiety, withdrawal, and epilepsy-specific variables. Temporal lobe epilepsy was associated with a two-fold risk of clinically significant depression ratings. These findings highlight the high prevalence of internalizing psychopathology features in pediatric epilepsy and offer further support for the relationship between depression and TLE in children and adolescents with epilepsy.  相似文献

BackgroundWe compare the mental health status of children who reside in Lithuania with parents who are either Lithuanian nationals or non-Lithuanian nationals.MethodData were drawn from the School Child Mental Health Europe survey (SCMHE), a cross-sectional survey of school children aged 6–11 years. A total of 1152 Lithuanian children participated, among them 11.7% from a non-Lithuanian family. Child mental health was assessed using the Dominique Interactive (DI) and the parent- and teacher Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Parental attitudes were evaluated, and socio-demographics were collected.ResultsOverall 26.7% of non-Lithuanian versus 17.2% of Lithuanian children reported having an internalizing disorder (p = 0.01) mainly due to separation anxiety (16.4% versus 10.2%, p = 0.04). Odds ratio (OR) for child-reported internalizing disorders was 1.86 (95% CI = 1.17–2.96) once adjusted for other factors including being a girl, to be younger, parental unemployment and low caring and low autonomy parental attitudes which were associated with greater odds of internalizing disorders. In addition, 31.9% of non-Lithuanian reported suicidal thoughts versus 22.0% of Lithuanian children p = .02); OR = 1.60 (95% CI = 1.04–2.46) once adjusted for single parent, parental unemployment, parental alcohol problems and overreactivity attitude.ConclusionsBeing a non-national minority in Lithuania is a risk factor for child mental health. These findings suggest that further studies are needed to inform local policy-makers on targeted prevention and intervention programs in these children.  相似文献

PurposeThe stress sensitization model states that early traumatic experiences increase vulnerability to the adverse effects of subsequent stressful life events. This study examined the effect of stress sensitization on development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in Chinese adolescents who experienced the pipeline explosion.MethodsA total of 670 participants completed self-administered questionnaires on demographic characteristics and degree of explosion exposure, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist—Civilian Version (PCL-C). Associations among the variables were explored using MANOVA, and main effects and interactions were analyzed.ResultsOverall MANOVA tests with the PCL-C indicated significant differences for gender (F = 6.86, p = .000), emotional abuse (F = 6.79, p = .000), and explosion exposure (F = 22.40, p = .000). There were significant interactions between emotional abuse and explosion exposure (F = 3.98, p = .008) and gender and explosion exposure (F = 2.93, p = .033).ConclusionsBeing female, childhood emotional abuse, and a high explosion exposure were associated with high PTSD symptom levels. Childhood emotional abuse moderated the effect of explosion exposure on PTSD symptoms. Thus, stress sensitization influenced the development of PTSD symptoms in Chinese adolescents who experienced the pipeline explosion as predicted by the model.  相似文献

Many studies reported high prevalence of reading disability (RD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among delinquent adolescents. Very few have examined their cognitive profile. The present study compared the executive functions (EFs) and severity of delinquency in delinquent adolescents with RD and/or ADHD symptoms (AS). Delinquents with AS (n = 29), RD (n = 24), comorbidity AS + RD (n = 35) were recruited from juvenile institutions along with typically developing controls (n = 29) from local schools; all completed EF assessments and self-report questionnaires on delinquency. Results showed that pure AS group exhibited impaired inhibition while the pure RD group was weak in processing speed and visual memory. The comorbidity group showed unique impairments in interference control and significantly higher delinquency severity. The present findings suggest that comorbidity AS + RD may influence delinquency severity. It also provides a more comprehensive picture of the unique EF deficits associated with different groups, allowing for better matching for future identification and intervention programme.  相似文献

IntroductionHealth sciences students usually report high rates of mental health problems. The COVID-19 pandemic context may have serious psychological impacts in this at-risk population. We aimed to assess the self-reported mental health status, health-related quality of life and coping strategies of health sciences students during the early stage of the pandemic.MethodAn online 128-item questionnaire sent to 17,673 health sciences students from the Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 in April 2020 assessed: a) sociodemographic characteristics, b) conditions of lockdown, c) depressive (Beck Depression Inventory- Short Form, BDI-SF), anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-A, STAI-A) and traumatic symptoms (Impact of Event Scale -Revised, IES-R), d) health-related quality of life (SF12) and e) coping strategies (Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, Brief COPE).ResultsThe participation rate was 9.9% (n = 1,765). A total of 19.5% of participants reported an IES-R > 33, 11.6% depressive symptoms, 58.1% anxiety symptoms, and 4.4% suicidal ideation. Their mental health-related quality of life was significantly poorer than for physical health. Female gender, COVID-like symptoms, social isolation due to the lockdown, pandemic-related financial restraint and exams-related stress were significantly associated with poorer self-reported mental health conditions. Volunteering in the healthcare system was significantly associated with lower mental health scores. Coping strategies were mostly oriented toward avoidance and positive appraisal.ConclusionFrench health sciences students exhibited high levels of self-reported mental health problems and a poor mental health-related quality of life during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific risk factors related to the pandemic partly explain the observed prevalence.  相似文献

BackgroundGroup social skills interventions (SSI) are partially effective for addressing the communication and social interaction impairments experienced by individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Social anxiety has been found to be a moderating mechanism for SSI in young people with ASD. Comparatively few studies have investigated the effectiveness of SSI in the adult ASD population, and none so far have investigated group approaches incorporating SSI and anxiety management techniques.MethodThe present study describes the design and evaluation of a non-randomised single-arm, 11 week group interaction anxiety and social skills intervention, piloted on three occasions during routine clinical practice at an adult ASD service. The intervention was informed by a cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) framework. Eighteen cognitively-able adult males with ASD attended. Outcome measures were completed pre- and post-intervention.ResultsSelf-reported social anxiety improved (p = 0.01, d = 0.65). Low mood, general anxiety and functioning did not change significantly (p > 0.05, d < 0.20). Qualitative feedback indicated that participants found the intervention to be acceptable and useful for improving social knowledge and coping strategies, and reducing avoidance behaviours. Attrition was low (n = 2).ConclusionsThese results suggest that integrating SSI and anxiety management techniques in a group format is acceptable to adults with ASD, and can reduce symptoms of social anxiety. Whether SSI enhance social skills in adults requires further investigation. In clinical practice, consideration should be given to augmenting SSI with CBT techniques designed to target concurrent symptoms of social anxiety.  相似文献

This study examined the effects and mediators of a clinic-based intervention program (CBIP) and a home-based intervention program (HBIP) compared with usual care in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) preterm infants on developmental and behavioral outcomes at 24 months of age (corrected for prematurity). In this randomized controlled trial, VLBW preterm infants received either CBIP (n = 57), HBIP (n = 63), or usual care (n = 58) from hospitalization to 12 months. At 12 months, infant emotional regulation was assessed using the toy-behind-barrier procedure and dyadic interaction was observed during free play. At 24 months, infant developmental and behavioral outcomes were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development- 3rd edition and the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1.5–5, respectively. Compared with infants under usual care, the CBIP-group infants showed higher cognitive composite scores (difference, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 4.4, 0.8–7.9) and a lower rate of motor delay (odds ratio (OR), 95% CI = 0.29, 0.08–0.99); the HBIP-group infants had lower sleep problem scores (difference, 95% CI = −1.4, −2.5 to −0.3) and a lower rate of internalizing problems at 24 months (OR, 95% CI = 0.51, 0.28–0.93) (all p < .05). The CBIP's effect on cognitive outcome was attenuated when maternal or dyadic interactive behavior was considered; whereas the HBIP's effect on sleep and internalizing behavior was attenuated when duration of orientation to a toy or object was considered. In conclusions, interventions enhanced the cognitive, motor, and behavioral outcomes of VLBW preterm infants. The effects on cognitive and behavioral outcomes might be mediated by early-improved mother–infant interaction and infant emotional regulation, respectively.  相似文献

This study investigated early language profiles in two groups of children with developmental disability: children with Down Syndrome (DS, n = 13) and children with Language Impairment (LI, n = 16). Vocabulary and grammatical skills in the two groups were assessed and compared to language skills of typically developing (TD) children matched on size of either their receptive or expressive vocabulary (n = 58). The study aimed to establish if language development in these groups is delayed or fundamentally different than the TD groups, and if the group with DS showed a similar language profile to the group with LI. There is a clinical motivation to identify possible key risk characteristics that may distinguish children who are likely to have LI from the variation observed in TD children.Three clear findings emerged from the data. Firstly, both receptive and expressive vocabulary compositions did not significantly differ in the clinical groups (DS and LI) after being matched to the vocabulary size of TD children. This provides further support for the idea that word learning for the children in the clinical groups is delayed rather than deviant. Secondly, children with LI showed a significantly larger gap between expressive and receptive word knowledge, but children with DS showed a pattern comparable to TD children. Thirdly, children with LI who understood a similar number of words as the TD children still had significantly poorer grammatical skills, further underlining the dissociation between lexical and grammatical skills in children with LI. Grammatical skills of children with DS were commensurate with their lexical skills. The findings suggest that language intervention should be specifically tailored to etiology rather than focused on general communication strategies, particularly in children with LI.  相似文献

The aim was to explore the relationship between sleep habits and overweight/obesity, physical activity and sedentary behaviours in French adolescents with intellectual disabilities. This observational study was conducted on 535 French adolescents with intellectual deficiency. Sleep habits were analyzed and related to anthropometric measures, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. The study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Adolescents completed the questionnaire during an interview with the principle investigator. Sleep timing behaviour was classified into 4 sleep patterns: Early-bed/Early-rise, Early-bed/Late-rise, Late-bed/Late-rise, and Late-bed/Early-rise. Of 573 eligible participants, 125 were excluded because of missing data on age, weight or height. The number of participants identified in each of the four sleep patterns was as follows: Early-bed/Early-rise, N = 59 (15.4%), Early-bed/Late-rise, N = 164 (43%), Late-bed/Early-rise, N = 56 (15%), Late-bed/Late-rise N = 102 (27%). Adolescents who woke up early were more active than those from the late rise group (p < 0.001). The number of adolescents who are sedentary was higher in late rise vs. early rise subjects (p < 0.001). Subjects in the late-bed group were more likely overweight and obese (p < 0.05). Results suggest that sleep behaviour was associated with overweight/obesity, physical activity and sedentary behaviour in adolescents with intellectual deficiency. This study explored bilingual exposure, language, social impairment and cognitive factors that could influence second language (L2) expressive vocabulary size as measured on the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventories (various languages) in 33 children (mean age = 60 months) diagnosed with ASD. In the 23 children with L2 vocabularies, recent language exposure estimates accounted for 69% of the variation in L2 vocabulary size, and the VABS-II expressive scale score explained an additional 13% of the difference. The complete sample was then subgrouped into three levels of L2 vocabulary size to compare children with no L2 vocabularies (NON-B, n = 10), low L2 word counts (LOW-B, n = 11) and high L2 counts (HIGH-B, n = 12), as determined by a median split procedure. The HIGH-B group had significantly larger L1 vocabularies than both the LOW-B (p = .045) and the NON-B (p = .003) groups, and higher VABS-II expressive scale scores than both the LOW-B (p = .008) and the NON-B (p = .012) groups. Social impairment did not significantly differ across groups and cognitive impairment did not preclude the development of L2 vocabularies. Expressive bilingualism in this population appears related to high levels of recent direct L2 exposure in combination with stronger dominant language abilities.  相似文献
