IntroductionThe prevalence of extra distolingual (DL) roots in mandibular first molars in Chinese population is about 20%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of root length and root curvatures between distobuccal (DB) and DL roots of three-rooted mandibular first molars in a Taiwanese (Chinese) population.MethodsOf the 293 extracted mandibular first molars, DL roots were present in 29 (9.9%) teeth. Excluding teeth with fractured DB or DL roots, 21 mandibular first molars were further investigated. DB and DL root lengths were measured from the lower level of furcation at the distal surface to the root apex. The curvature of the DL root was measured on mesial-distal and buccal-lingual radiographs by Schneider's technique.ResultsThe DL roots were significantly (p < 0.001) shorter than the DB roots with an average of 1.48 ± 0.81 mm. Most DL roots had a greater curvature in a buccal-lingual orientation (36.35° ± 9.38°) than a mesial-distal orientation (9.24° ± 6.10°) and 28.57% of the curved DL roots had the curvature at the apical one third (p < 0.001).ConclusionThe results of this study verified the characteristics of shorter root length and severe buccal-lingual inclination of DL roots in three-rooted mandibular first molars.  相似文献

Introduction

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the root canal morphology of three-rooted mandibular first molars by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans.

Methods

Twenty three-rooted mandibular first molars were scanned by micro-CT scans. The teeth were reconstructed three-dimensionally by software Mimics 10.01 (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). The levels of the root apexes and furcations; the diameters; wall thicknesses; and tapers of the mesiobuccal (MB), mesiodistal (ML), distobuccal (DB) and distolingual (DL) canals were determined. The buccolingual/mesiodiatal (BL/MD) diameter ratios (ΔC) and the prevalence of long oval canals (ΔC > 2) at different levels were calculated.

Results

The level of distal furcations was significantly (P < .01) lower than that of MD furcations with an average of 1.09 mm. The buccal and lingual walls were significantly (P < .05) thicker than the mesial and distal for the MB, ML, and DB canals. Among four canals, the DL canal had the smallest mean value of ΔC at each level. The average BL taper was greater than the MD for each canal except the middle portion of the DL canal.

Conclusion

The vertical length, width, BL/MD diameter ratio, wall thickness, and BL taper of the DB canals are on average greater than the DL canals. The MB, ML, and DB canals are more oval, whereas the DL canals are relatively rounder. The geometric data of root canals are useful for endodontic treatment on three-rooted mandibular first molars.  相似文献

目的研究3根型下颌第一恒磨牙远颊根及远舌根根管弯曲度的特点。方法从临床采集25颗拔除的3根型下颌第一恒磨牙,开髓揭顶后,将2支8号K锉分别插入远颊根及远舌根根管达根尖孔。RVG(radio visiography)数字成像系统采集牙齿在近远中向和颊舌向的X线数码牙片。将数码牙片导入图像分析软件ImagePro Plus6.0,分别用Schneider法和Weine法测量根管弯曲度及根管入角。结果 Schneider法测得远颊根根管在近远中向弯曲度为9.33°±5.08°,颊舌向为10.06°±5.73°,差异无统计学意义(P〉0.05);远舌根根管在近远中向弯曲度为11.28°±7.30°,颊舌向为28.34°±13.76°,颊舌向弯曲度显著大于近远中向,差异有统计学意义(P〈0.001)。Weine法测得的各项目均值皆大于Schneider法,而且两者具有高度相关性(Pearson相关系数r=0.972,P=0.000)。远舌根根管在颊舌向根管入角为27.04°±8.85°,明显大于近远中向的13.15°±6.74°,差异有统计学意义(P〈0.001)。结论掌握3根型下颌第一恒磨牙根管弯曲的特点有利于根管预备取得成功。  相似文献

AIM: To study the root canal morphology of Burmese mandibular molars using a canal staining and tooth clearing technique. METHODOLOGY: Mandibular molars (331) were collected from indigenous Burmese patients and designated; first (139), second (134), third (58) molars. Following pulp tissue removal and staining of the canal systems with Indian ink, the teeth were decalcified and rendered clear with methyl salicylate. Under magnification (x3), the following features were evaluated: (i) root number and morphology, (ii) number of canals per root, (iii) root canal configuration (Vertucci's classification), (iv) number of apical foramina per root, (v) number and location of lateral canals and (vi) the presence of intercanal communications. RESULTS: Most of the mandibular molars had two separate roots (90% in first molars, 58% in second molars, 53% in third molars) and three-rooted teeth were (10%) confined to first molars. C-shaped roots occurred in 22.4% of mandibular second molars and a further 14.9% had two fused roots. The majority (81-100%) of conical distal roots possessed a simple type I (single canal) configuration. Whilst the canal system of mesial roots was more complex: 52-85% contained two canals, of which type II (two orifices, one foramen) and type IV (two separate canals) were the most prevalent. A broad range of 6.5-70% had intercanal communications. Fused/single-rooted molars had a wide variety of canal system types but intercanal communications were rare except in C-shaped roots (33%) of second molars. The majority of roots of all molars contained one or two apical foramina (91-96%) and the apical third had the highest prevalence of lateral canals. CONCLUSIONS: There was a high prevalence of three-rooted mandibular first molars and C-shaped roots/canals in mandibular second molars from a Burmese population. Conical roots tend to have simple canal systems, whilst flatter/broader roots have more complex canal systems.  相似文献

目的:利用锥形束CT(CBCT)观察分析西北地区中国人下颌第一恒磨牙牙根和根管数目及其变异情况,以期为临床治疗提供参考。方法:随机调取来我院放射科行CBCT检查的病人图像资料,统计分析下颌第一恒磨牙牙根和根管数目及其分布情况。结果:共获取800例病人1 600个下颌第一恒磨牙CBCT图像数据。下颌第一恒磨牙2个牙根的发生率为72.69%(1163/1600),其中2根2管的发生率3.27%,2根3管的发生率73.00%,2根4管的发生率23.73%;3个牙根的发生率为27.31%(437/1 600),其中3根3管的发生率4.12%,3根4管的发生率95.88%。下颌第一恒磨牙远中舌根的个体发生率为33.75%(270/800)。男女性别间发生率无统计学差异(P>0.05)。下颌第一恒磨牙远舌根双侧对称性的发生率61.85%(167/270),且右侧高于左侧,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。结论:下颌第一恒磨牙牙根和根管数目以及解剖形态存在多样性,CBCT影像可为临床根管治疗术提供可靠的依据。  相似文献

Objective

To investigate the bilateral concurrence and relationships between distolingual (DL) roots and DL canals of the mandibular first molars and second mesiobuccal (MB2) canals of the maxillary first molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methods

A total of 150 CBCT images showing all mandibular and maxillary first molars were retrospectively investigated in a South Korean subpopulation. The patient age, sex, positions of first molars, and presence of roots and canals were assessed. The frequency, bilateral concurrence of DL roots, DL canals, and MB2 canals, and concurrent relationship of DL roots or DL canals with MB2 canals were investigated. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s exact test and odds ratios from binary logistic regression.

Results

The prevalences of DL roots, DL canals, and MB2 canals were 24.7, 42.7, and 56.0 %, respectively, and showed significant bilateral concurrence. A concurrent relationship between DL roots and MB2 canals was not demonstrated, whereas the presence of a DL canal was significantly correlated with the presence of an MB2 canal on the same side.

Conclusions

The presence of a DL root of the mandibular first molar, a strong ethnic characteristic, could not predict the presence of an MB2 canal of the maxillary first molar. The correlation between DL canals and MB2 canals on the same side and the significant bilateral concurrence, whether present or absent, of DL roots, DL canals, and MB2 canals can aid clinicians in the prediction of additional canals in the first molars.  相似文献

A study of 480 extracted first permanent mandibular molars of the Oulof people of Senegal, West Africa, revealed 15 teeth with three roots (3.12%), and 120 teeth with four root canals (25%). An extra root correlated with a sextum lingual tubercle in 20% of cases. Analysis of the pulp chambers revealed a variety of rectangular shapes. Comparison of these anomalies with their incidence in other ethnic groups extends the range of incidence of three-rooted first permanent mandibular molars in the Negroid race. This trait is described for only the second time in a Negroid population. The clinical consequences of root variation in root canal treatment are considered.  相似文献

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of three-rooted permanent mandibular first molars (PMFMs) with four canals and their morphological characteristics among a Korean population from using cone-beam computed tomography scans (CBCTs).

Materials and methods

Among the 705 CBCTs screened, 472 patient cases possessing at least one PMFM were identified. A total of 780 PMFMs were evaluated in axial section series to determine the number of roots and canals. The incidences of three-rooted PMFMs were compared with regard to gender and location. For distal root(s) with two canals, inter-orifice distances (IOD) between distobuccal and distolingual canals were measured at pulpal floor and furcation levels. The difference of IOD between males and females was also analyzed using chi-square tests.

Results

Among the 472 CBCTs of 225 females and 247 males, 84 females and 107 males were found to have at least one three-rooted PMFM. Among the 780 PMFMs, 191 PMFMs (24.5%, 89 of 397 left and 102 of 383 right) were found to have three roots. The prevalence of distal root(s) with two canals was 34.2% (267 of 780). From the molars with two distal canals, the mean IOD between distobuccal and distolingual canals at the pulpal floor level was 3.1 mm in males and 2.9 mm in females (p?=?0.0428).

Conclusions

The occurrence of three-rooted PMFMs among a Korean population was 24.5% and was higher than other countries and ethnicities. Understanding the prevalence of PMFMs with a distolingual root and/or canal in a Korean population and the IOD between distobuccal and distolingual canals may be useful for successful endodontic treatments.

Clinical relevance

Acknowledgment of potential incidence of three-rooted permanent mandibular first molars with four canals and the distance between two distal canals may increase the success rate of root canal treatment by reducing the missing canal untreated.  相似文献

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the canal configuration types, and the prevalence and location of anatomical variations in the mesiobuccal (MB) and mesial roots of permanent maxillary and mandibular first molars after instrumentation. The number and the type of canals were determined before instrumentation using conventional methods. All root canals from the 47 MB roots and 42 mesial roots were then instrumented to size #30 with ProFile .04 taper rotary instruments in a crown-down method and then filled with a single gutta-percha cone and sealer. Transverse 1 mm-thick cross-sections at 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm from the apex were obtained, stained and examined using a stereomicroscope. The canal configuration types and the prevalence and location of isthmi and accessory canals in roots with two canals were evaluated. The prevalence of two canals was 80.8% in the maxillary MB roots and 95.2% in the mandibular mesial roots. There were six types of canal configurations in the instrumented root apices. The prevalence of anatomical variations was highest at the apical 4 mm level, and was more frequent in mandibular first molars, and in roots with Weine type III canal. chi test showed that the prevalence of the anatomical variations was statistically higher in the maxillary MB roots with Weine type III canals than in those with Weine type II canals (p < 0.05). Different canal configurations were often found at different levels in the same root. The results indicate that anatomical variations persist following instrumentation of roots with two canals in first molars. These anatomical variations should be considered during surgical or nonsurgical endodontic procedures of the permanent first molars.  相似文献

AIM: The purpose of the present ex vivo study was to investigate variations in the root canal systems of mandibular and maxillary first permanent molar teeth of South Asian Pakistanis. METHODOLOGY: The root canal systems of a sample of 30 mandibular and 30 maxillary first permanent molar teeth extracted from South Asian Pakistanis were studied using a clearing technique. RESULTS: The mesial roots of the mandibular molar teeth typically presented with two canals (97%) of type II, IV or VI configuration. The distal roots of these teeth presented with a single canal (50%) of type I or V configuration or with two canals (50%) of type II, IV or VI. The prevalence of four root canals in two-rooted mandibular first permanent molar teeth was 47%. In maxillary molar teeth the mesial roots with a single canal (47%) were type I or type V; those with two canals (53%) were type II, IV or type VI. The distal and palatal roots that presented as a single canal (100%) were type I or type V configuration. The prevalence of four root canals in three-rooted maxillary first permanent molar teeth was 53%. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that four root canals in mandibular and maxillary first permanent molar teeth of South Asian Pakistanis is a common occurrence. The distribution of the different configurations of root canal systems in this population differed from that in Caucasian groups, suggesting that variations in root canal systems may be attributed to racial divergence.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of mandibular first molars featuring a distolingual root among a Taiwanese population. A total of 731 patients' periapical radiographs were screened and examined to obtain 166 samples for this study. The gender, symmetry, and frequencies of occurrence of three-rooted mandibular first molars were recorded. The prevalence of three-rooted mandibular first molars was 21.09%. The bilateral incidence of a symmetrical distribution was 68.57%. There was a significantly greater incidence of three-rooted teeth on the right side of the mandible than on the left, but gender did not show a significant relationship with this variant prevalence. Clinicians should be aware of the high racial prevalence of the distolingual root in mandibular first molars among the Taiwanese (Chinese) population before initiating endodontic treatment.  相似文献

Aim  To investigate the root form and canal morphology of mandibular first molar teeth in a Taiwan Chinese population.
Methodology  A total of 183 mandibular first molars were collected and examined visually through a dissecting microscope after rendering the teeth transparent. The number of roots, number of canals and canal configuration were recorded. The root canal morphology was categorized and compared according to Vertucci (1984).
Results  Overall 46% of the mandibular first molars had four canals and 20% had extra-distal roots (distolingual root). In addition, 97% of the specimens had two mesial canals and 46% had two distal canals. In total, 68% of teeth with two mesial canals had two separated apical foramina, and 33% of teeth with two distal canals had two apical foramina. The most common canal configurations (Vertucci, 1984) of mesial roots were type 4 (46%) and type 2 (23%). Type 1 was encountered in 54% of the distal roots.
Conclusions  The frequency of the extra-distal root on the mandibular first molar was 20%, and the incidence of three canals (Vertucci's type 8 classification) with separate apical foramina at the apex of the mesial root was 6%. The three-rooted variation of the mandibular first molar appears to be a genetic characteristic of an Asiatic racial background.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the root and canal morphology of 351 mandibular permanent molars collected from an indigenous Thai population. METHODOLOGY: The cleaned teeth were accessed, the pulp dissolved by sodium hypochlorite under ultrasonication and the pulp system injected with Indian ink. The teeth were rendered clear by demineralization and immersion in methyl salicylate. The following observations were made: (i) number of roots and their morphology; (ii) number of root canals per tooth; (iii) number of root canals per root; (iv) root canal configuration in each root using Vertucci's classification, with additional modifications; and (v) presence and location of lateral canals and intercanal communications. RESULTS: Of 118 mandibular first molars, 13% had a third disto-lingual root. In three-rooted teeth, 80% of the main distal roots and 100% of the disto-lingual roots had type 1 canal systems. Of 60 mandibular second molars, 10% had C-shaped roots, the majority of which had type 1 (33%) or type IV (33%) canal systems. Of 173 third molars, 68% had two separate roots, 20% had fused roots and 11% had a single C-shaped root; the majority had two canals (61%). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that Thai molars exhibit features of both Caucasian and Chinese teeth.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate variations in the root canal systems of first and second permanent mandibular molar teeth in a Sudanese population using a clearing technique. METHODOLOGY: Two hundred extracted first and second permanent mandibular molars from three cities in the state of Khartoum were studied. Access cavities were prepared and pulp tissue was removed by immersion in 5% sodium hypochlorite under ultrasonication; Indian ink was then injected into the root canal systems assisted by a vacuum applied apically. The teeth were rendered clear by demineralization and immersion in methyl salicylate before evaluation. The following observations were made (i) number of roots and their morphology; (ii) number of root canals per tooth; (iii) number of root canals per root and (iv) root canal configuration. RESULTS: Overall 59% of mandibular first molars had four canals with 3% having a third distolingual root. Seventy-eight per cent of second mandibular molars had two separate flat roots, whilst 10% were C-shaped. The most common canal system configurations were type IV (73%) and type II (14%). Inter-canal communications were more common in the mesial roots. The prevalence of inter-canal communications was 65% in first molars and 49% in second molars. CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of Sudanese teeth, 59% of the mandibular first permanent molars had four root canals whilst 10% of the mandibular second molars had C-shaped roots/canals.  相似文献

Aim To identify the number of roots and canal configurations in permanent first molars of the indigenous Kuwaiti sub‐population and compare them against a similar group of non‐Kuwaiti population in different age groups and gender, and to determine the frequency of a second canal in the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molars and distal root of mandibular first molars that could be located and treated in routine practice without using magnification or special lighting conditions. Methodology A total of 220 permanent first molar teeth of patients scheduled for root canal treatment over a period of 1 year were included. Patients were identified and grouped according to their nationality as Kuwaiti and non‐Kuwaiti (which included Filipinos, Indonesian Indians, Srilankans, Egyptians, Saudi Arabians and Syrians). In both nationality groups, patients were successively distributed into four groups based on their age. The first age group included patients below 20 years, the second 21–30 years, the third 31–40 years and the fourth were over 40 years. The first three groups comprised of 15 male and 15 female patients whilst the fourth group had 10 patients of each gender. Teeth with open apices, resorptions and calcification were excluded from the study. The teeth included were both clinically and radiographically examined for number of roots, the canal configuration and the presence of the additional mesiobuccal and distal canals and recorded. The simplified classification of canal configurations proposed by Weine was utilized. Results The incidence of a second canal in the mesiobuccal (MB) root of maxillary first molars and the distal root of mandibular first molars was not influenced significantly by nationality and gender. All the 110 maxillary first molars treated had three roots; 58% of MB root had one canal and 42% had two canals. The majority of the mesial roots had Weine type II canal configuration when the second mesiobuccal canal was present. All distobuccal and palatal roots had a single or type I canal configuration. Of the 110 mandibular first molars that were treated, 96% had two roots and 4% had three roots. When present, the third root was located either buccal or lingual to the main distal root. Overall 51% of the single distal roots had one canal whilst 49% had two canals. The mesial root frequently had a Weine type II canal configuration as did the distal root when a second canal was present. Pearson’s correlation analysis of both molars revealed a significant (P < 0.05) negative correlation (r = ?0.274, r = ?0.144) between age and number of canals as well as the type of canal. Conclusions The incidence of a second canal in distal roots of permanent mandibular first molars was 49% in the Kuwaiti population and this was similar to other Asian ethnic populations. Adopting modified access and troughing procedures revealed a 42% frequency of MB2 canals in maxillary first molars. The incidence of a second canal in both mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molars and distal roots of mandibular molars decreased significantly with age; no differences were noticed amongst the nationalities and gender studied. The possibility of extra roots should be anticipated in mandibular molars.  相似文献

AimTo investigate the root and canal morphology of maxillary and mandibular permanent molar teeth in a Caucasian population by using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).MethodsA total of 596 permanent molars were included. The number of roots, the number of canals per root and the root canal configurations according to the method of Vertucci were recorded.ResultsAlmost all of maxillary first molars (95.7%) had three separate roots; however, 40.3% of mesiobuccal roots had two canals (MB2). Of 157 maxillary second molars, 88.5% had three roots. Among the mesiobuccal roots, 15.1% had two canals. The majority of mandibular molars (100% of first molars, 89.4% of second molars) had two separate roots. Most distal roots had a simple type I configuration, whereas mesial roots had more complex canal systems, with more than one canal.ConclusionsCBCT is an efficient method of studying root canal systems.  相似文献

目的:利用锥形束CT(CBCT)扫描评估辽宁地区汉族人下颌第二恒磨牙牙根和根管数目的情况。方法:调取于我院口腔科行CBCT扫描患者的图像资料,统计分析下颌第二恒磨牙牙根和根管数目的情况。结果:在900例下颌第二恒磨牙中,双根的发生率为51.22%,其中82%的近中根内为双根管,100%的远中根内为单根管;三根的发生率为2.18%;融合根的发生率为46.6%,其中完全融合的锥形根占5.71%,不完全融合的C形根(C型根管)占40.89%,C型根管发生率在男女性别间差异无统计学意义(p〉0.05),以双侧对称性分布较多,单侧发生率以右侧为多。结论:在辽宁地区汉族人中,下颌第二恒磨牙以双根或融合根居多,c形根(C型根管)的发生率较高。  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of this study was to determine the morphologic characteristics of mandibular first molars having 2 canals in distal roots. Interorifice distance, buccal bone thickness, and root curvature were evaluated using cone-beam computed tomography images in a Korean population.

Methods

In total, 1958 mandibular first molars were evaluated in axial, coronal, sagittal, and paraxial planes. Distal roots having 2 canals were classified according to their root and canal shapes (2 roots, 2 canals [2R2C]; 1 root, 2 canals with 2 apical foramina [1R2C(2-2)]; and 1 root, 2 canals with 1 apical foramen [1R2C(2-1)]). The distances between orifices and the distance from the apex to the buccal bone plate were measured for each root canal shape (2R2C, 1R2C[2-2], and 1R2C[2-1]). The curvature of distolingual (DL) roots was classified according to severity using 3-dimensional reconstructed images, and the direction of curvature was determined. The relationships of these characteristics to sex and side were evaluated.

Results

The prevalences of 2R2C, 1R2C(2-2), and 1R2C(2-1) were 25.89%, 10.32%, and 14.15%, respectively. The distances between distobuccal (DB) and DL orifices were 3.77 ± 0.74 mm for 2R2C, 3.02 ± 0.65 mm for 1R2C(2-2), and 2.44 ± 0.64 mm for 1R2C(2-1). The distances from the buccal plate to the DB canal were 3.84 ± 1.35 mm for 2R2C, 5.33 ± 1.41 mm for 1R2C(2-2), and 5.96 ± 1.63 mm for 1R2C(2-1). The distance from the buccal plate to the DL canal was 9.85 ± 1.46 mm for 2R2C, and 8.28 ± 1.50 mm for 1R2C(2-2). All distances differed significantly according to root canal configurations, and all were greater in men than women (P < .05), except for the DB-DL orifice distance in 1R2C(2-2) and the DB to buccal cortical plate distance in all root configurations (P > .05). No significant difference between the left and right sides was found (P > .05). The prevalence of most severely curved DL roots (type III) was 62.92%, and the direction was commonly toward the buccal side (69.03%).

Conclusions

The prevalence of mandibular first molars having 2 canals in distal roots was more than 50% in a Korean population. Interorifice distances between DB and DL canals and distances from the apex to the buccal cortical plate differed according to root and canal numbers and shapes.  相似文献

IntroductionThe aim of this study was to evaluate if the configuration of canal orifices can predict the presence of a second mesiobuccal canal (MB2) in maxillary second molars with fused roots.MethodsMaxillary second molars with fused roots (N = 150) were scanned in a micro–computed tomographic device (pixel size = 9 μm) and evaluated regarding the root fusion type and the incidence of the MB2 canal. The centers of the canal orifices were connected, and the angles formed by the intersection of these lines as well as their distances were measured and statistically compared (1-way analysis of variance). Specimens were then assigned to 2 groups according to the presence (n = 65) or absence (n = 50) of the MB2 canal and compared regarding the angles and interorifice distances using the Welch t test. A binary logistic regression model estimated the association between the interorifice distance, the fusion type, and the presence of the MB2 canal, whereas receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic abilities of significant variables. The significance level was set at 5%.ResultsThe most common fusion types were 1 and 6, and MB2 canal incidence was 47.3%. No statistical difference was observed in the angles or interorifice distances among teeth with different fusion types (P > .05). Distances from the mesiobuccal (MB) to the distobuccal and palatal (P) canal orifices as well as the MB and P angles were significantly higher in the presence of an MB2 canal (P < .05). A binary logistic regression model revealed that MB-distobuccal and MB-P distances were significant in the presence of an MB2 canal (P < .05). Receiver operating characteristic analysis indicated that MB-P distance had acceptable diagnostic accuracy for the prediction of MB2 canal presence. Sensitivity (specificity) calculated from the MB-P distances of 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 mm were 89.2% (36.5%), 76.9% (58.4%), and 44.4% (71.4%), respectively.ConclusionsMB-P interorifice distance is a strong predictor of the presence of the MB2 canal in maxillary second molars with fused roots.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of this study was to determine the root and canal morphology of the mandibular first molars in a Korean population of Mongolian origin by retrospective analysis of a large number of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.

Methods

A total of 976 subjects with bilateral mandibular first molars were examined by using in vivo CBCT methods. The number and configuration of roots, the number of root canals, and the canal configuration based on Vertucci's classification were determined.

Results

Overall, 25.82% of examined molars had 3 roots, 73.51% had 2 roots, and 0.67% had 1 root. The incidence of fourth canal was 50.36%. A right-sided predominance was noted for extra distal roots (P < .001), whereas a left-sided predominance was observed for extra distal canals (P < .001). No significant sex-related differences were shown for their prevalence. The bilateral prevalence rate was 69.13% for extra distal roots and 78.08% for extra distolingual (DL) canals. In the mesial roots, type IV canal was the most frequent (76.86% for 2-rooted molars and 72.96% for 3-rooted molars). In the distal roots, type l was the most common (66.62% for 2-rooted molars and 99.40%–100% for 3-rooted molars). The incidence of 2 canals in distobuccal roots, first reported in this study, was 0.15%.

Conclusions

Among mandibular first molars, there is a high prevalence of a separate DL root and/or a separate DL canal, and such molars commonly have 4 canals in the Korean population. CBCT is a useful tool for determining root and canal morphology.  相似文献
