Mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract are rare and display variable morphological appearances. Thanks to immunohistochemistry and molecular biology, these tumors are now better classified and dominated by stromal tumors. AIMS: the aim of this article is to study morphological characteristics of mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract and to insist on immunohistochemistry contribution to diagnosis, especially the c-Kit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: this is a retrospective study of 40 mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract diagnosed before the event of c-Kit, from 1985 to 1999 in the pathology laboratory of F. Hached hospital in Sousse. Immunohistochemical studies were performed on these tumors with the following antibodies: c-Kit, CD34, smooth muscle actin and S-100 protein. RESULTS: after immunostaining, the tumors were reclassified as the following: 33 stromal tumors, 4 leiomyosarcomas, 1 leiomyoma, 1 schwannoma and 1 desmoid tumor. CONCLUSION: mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract are dominated by stromal tumors. The latter are defined usually by a spindle cell proliferation, often expressing the c-Kit protein which must be used in all mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract.  相似文献

Four myxoid variant of uterine mesenchymal tumors are reported. One was a low grade stromal sarcoma with infiltrative margins and the others were well circumscribed tumors corresponding to an endometrial stromal nodule and two leiomyomas. They were hypocellular neoplasms composed of stellated cells with an abundant Alcian Blue positive myxoid matrix. The myxoid nature of the neoplasms obscured their cellular nature and made the distinction between smooth muscle and endometrial stromal tumors difficult. Endometrial stromal tumors, showed very focal areas of small basophilic cells, characteristic of endometrial stroma. The diagnosis was based on the presence of a spiral arteriolar network, a CD10 positivity as well as the absence of h-caldesmon and desmin expression. The two myxoid leiomyomas showed more spindle cells and a desmin expression while h-caldesmon was negative and CD10 focally positive in both cases. Myxoid variant of endometrial stromal tumors does not necessarily exhibit the typical morphology of endometrial stroma. They may demonstrate morphological features of smooth muscle tumors in the uterus. Also, myxoid changes in uterin smooth muscle tumors may modify the classical immunoreactivity of smooth muscle markers in these tumors and make it difficult to distinguish between benign and malignant neoplasms. An immunohistochemical panel of antibodies including CD10, h-caldesmon and desmin may help in establishing the correct diagnosis.  相似文献

Cell markers in gastrointestinal stromal tumors   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Stromal tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract have generated considerable controversy about their direction and level of differentiation, particularly about whether the tumor cells are smooth muscle or Schwann cells. In an attempt to characterize these tumors, the immunohistochemical staining patterns of desmin, vimentin, actin, and S-100 protein were studied in 41 GI stromal tumors, using the avidin-biotin method, and compared with normal host smooth muscle and nerve and with esophageal and uterine leiomyomas. Twenty gastric and one rectal tumor stained diffusely with vimentin and actin, but not with desmin, and had scattered strongly S-100-positive cells that might either be trapped Schwann cells or tumor cells. Twenty small bowel tumors stained similarly to the gastric tumors with regard to vimentin, actin, and desmin, but most (17/20) had a unique, strongly positive geographic staining pattern with S-100. No differences in staining were noted between benign and malignant tumors in either gastric or small bowel sites, and most histologic patterns in tumors from similar locations stained similarly. These results suggest that GI stromal tumors are not truly "leiomyomas and leiomyosarcomas," but relatively undifferentiated tumors, with the expression of various antigens depending on their location in the gut.  相似文献

Schwannomas, also known as neurinomas or neurilemmomas, are generally benign, slow-growing neoplasms originating in any nerve that has a Schwann cell sheath. These neoplasms are rare among the spindle cell mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, but develop most commonly in the stomach representing 0.2% of all gastric tumors. We present the case of a 57-year-old female patient with a large schwannoma in the stomach that was palpable in the abdomen. She underwent subtotal gastrectomy under suspicion of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), but post-operative histopathological and immunohistochemical findings showed a fascicular arrangement of spindle cell with pallisading nuclei, and positive for S-100 protein with negative smooth muscle actin (SMA). These results confirmed schwannoma as the diagnosis.  相似文献

Tumors that originate from neural crest-derived cells represent a heterogeneous group of neoplasms including benign and malignant tumors with melanocytic and schwannian differentiation. The immunophenotype of these tumors is well known but little is known about the expression of smooth muscle/myofibroblastic markers in these tumors. A total of 590 neural crest-derived tumors (50 benign schwannomas, five malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, 80 neurofibromas, 240 nevocytic nevi, 115 primary melanomas, and 100 melanoma metastases) were studied with respect to α-smooth muscle actin and muscle-specific actin expression. α-Smooth muscle actin and muscle-specific actin-positive tumor cells with a co-expression of S-100 protein were found in one benign schwannoma, one primary cutaneous melanoma, and four melanoma metastases. Four of these cases were examined ultrastructurally, but typical actin filaments with focal densities were not found in any of the four. Other immunohistochemical markers examined including desmin, h-caldesmon and smooth muscle myosin heavy chain were negative in the tumor cells. The present results suggest that neural crest-derived tumors could show expression of α-smooth muscle actin on rare occasion.  相似文献

Mixed tumors of the vagina (MTsV) are rare benign neoplasms characterized by an admixture of well-differentiated epithelial cells and stromal-type cells in various proportions. In contrast to mixed tumors in other anatomic sites, the histogenesis of the vaginal tumors is unclear. We studied the immunohistochemical profile of 13 examples to explore their histogenesis and determine whether their immunohistochemical profile might be useful in the differential diagnosis. The panel of antibodies used and the number of cases studied were: AE1/3 (12), cytokeratin 7 (CK7) (13), cytokeratin 20 (CK20) (13), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) (13), muscle actin (MA) (12), desmin (11), h-Caldesmon (13), CD10 (13), CD34 (11), CD99 (8), and S-100 (7). Eight out of 12 tumors were positive for AE1/3, 7/13 for CK7, 2/13 for CK20, and 6/13 for EMA. MA was positive in 11/12 mixed tumors, desmin in 10/11 tumors and h-Caldesmon in 5/13. All tumors were extensively positive for CD10; CD34 was positive in 7/11; and none out of eight tumors showed membranous CD99 staining. Focal S-100 immunoreactivity was seen in 1/7 tumors. These results show that MTsV coexpress epithelial and mesenchymal markers. The expression of muscle actin (usually extensive), and focal desmin and h-Caldesmon positivity suggests the presence of a smooth muscle or myoepithelial component; however, the S-100 negativity and diffuse CD10 expression argue against it. Positivity for muscle markers does not help distinguish MTsV from smooth muscle or skeletal muscle tumors. The frequent expression of CD10 negates its use in the differential diagnosis with endometrial stromal tumors, and the CD10 and CD34 expression suggests that mixed tumors may arise from a primitive pluripotential cell. MTsV are positive for h-Caldesmon and CD10, two markers that have been used in gynecologic pathology primarily to aid in establishing the smooth muscle or endometrial stromal phenotype of a neoplasm.  相似文献

Currently, the immunohistochemical evaluation of smooth muscle differentiation is usually based on desmin, which also reacts with skeletal muscle and is not present in all smooth muscle tumors, and alpha-smooth muscle actin, which reacts with myoepithelial cells. Neither marker typically reacts with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), previously classified as smooth muscle tumors or presently often classified as smooth muscle/stromal tumors. Two cytoskeleton-associated actin-binding proteins, calponin (CALP) and h-caldesmon (HCD), are putative smooth muscle markers that also react with myoepithelia. These markers are of particular interest in the immunohistochemical analysis of tumors; neither of them has been extensively documented in soft tissue tumors. In this study, we evaluated selected normal and reactive tissues and more than 250 mesenchymal tumors for CALP and HCD. Both markers were expressed in parenchymal and vascular smooth muscle cells in various organs and in myoepithelial cells. CALP also reacted with myofibroblasts of desmoplastic stroma. All of our 25 benign smooth muscle tumors from various locations were positive for CALP and HCD, as were most of the retroperitoneal and uterine leiomyosarcomas. HCD was more specific, because CALP also reacted with myofibroblastic lesions. The common reactivity of malignant fibrous histiocytomas with CALP and HCD suggests a combination of myofibroblastic and smooth muscle differentiation in these tumors. The GISTs (c-kit positive, usually actin negative) showed nearly consistent HCD reactivity, suggesting traits of smooth muscle differentiation. GISTs were usually CALP negative and showed a CALP expression pattern similar to that of alpha-smooth muscle actin. Although nonmuscle, nonmyofibroblastic tumors were negative for CALP and HCD, synovial sarcomas showed streaks of CALP-positive cells of unknown significance. CALP and HCD should be explored as markers to identify myofibroblastic and smooth muscle cell differentiation in mesenchymal tumors.  相似文献

Pure mesenchymal tumours of the uterus broadly comprise two major categories, smooth muscle neoplasms and endometrial stromal neoplasms. Of these the most common tumours are smooth muscle tumours of the uterus, the majority of these are benign and are recognised as leiomyomata routinely. Leiomyosarcoma is the commonest malignant mesenchymal tumour of the uterus accounting for >50% of uterine sarcomas and comprising 1–2% of uterine malignancies. Variants of both benign and malignant tumours are recognised and increasingly, through the evolution of more sophisticated immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques we are aware of the many “pitfalls” in their diagnosis which will be discussed in this review. The second major category comprises endometrial stromal tumours which has undergone re-classification in the WHO 2014 classification and has been the subject of a recent review in this journal. Despite it being the second most common uterine sarcoma, it is encountered infrequently in routine diagnostic practice, and its benign counterpart is approximately 8× less frequent. Endometrial stromal tumours will not be comprehensively considered in this review, but only in the context of differential diagnosis. This review will attempt to update the reader with recently described entities that may lead to diagnostic confusion and provide a diagnostic approach.  相似文献

Background: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare, mesenchymal neoplasms composed of epithelioid cells exhibiting myogenic and melanocytic differentiation. The uterus is an infrequent site of involvement. The most common histopathologic mimics include leiomyosarcoma, endometrial stromal sarcoma, undifferentiated uterine sarcoma, and malignant melanoma. Rendering an accurate histopathologic diagnosis is essential, owing to the prognostic and therapeutic implications. Case: A 65-years-old post-menopausal woman presented with post-menopausal bleeding, abdominal pain, and heaviness for the last four months. Ultrasound abdomen revealed a large uterine mass replacing the endometrial cavity. She underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Result: Microscopically, a circumscribed tumor with tumor cells arranged in sheets and interlacing fascicles, with interspersed fine capillary network, was seen. The individual tumor cells were epithelioid to spindle with moderate pleomorphism, round nuclei, vesicular chromatin, prominent macronucleoli, and moderate cytoplasm. Mitosis was 2-3/50 HPFs. On immunohistochemistry, tumor cells were positive for HMB-45, Melan-A, and smooth muscle actin and were negative for h-caldesmon, TFE3, S-100, CD10, and pan-cytokeratin. Based on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, a final diagnosis of malignant uterine PEComa was rendered. Conclusions: This index report describes the characteristic histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of malignant uterine PEComa and highlights the salient features that distinguish it from other commonly encountered histopathologic mimics.  相似文献

Distribution of actin isoforms in sarcomas: An immunohistochemical study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The actin immunophenotype of eight benign mesenchymal tumors, 14 nonsarcomatoid tumors, and 46 sarcomatoid tumors was studied, using monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) specific for alpha-smooth muscle actin (clone 1A4), alpha- and gamma-smooth muscle actin (designated CGA7), and muscle actin (designated HHF35) on frozen sections. Tumor cells of nonsarcomatoid tissues were not reactive, but all leiomyomas and five of the seven leiomyosarcomas reacted with the three MoAbs. One leiomyosarcoma was immunoreactive for the MoAb 1A4 only. One of the six malignant schwannomas showed staining for muscle actin (HHF35). The 22 malignant fibrous histocytomas (MFH) expressed these actin isoforms in various degrees. One case immunoreacted with all three MoAbs, three reacted with 1A4 only, seven reacted with CGA7 and HHF35, and two reacted with HHF35 only. Nine MFHs were not immunoreactive for any of the MoAbs specific for (smooth) muscle and actin. In addition, the expression of desmin and collagen type IV was investigated for the group of leiomyosarcomas and MFHs. Desmin was found in five leiomyosarcomas and in two MFHs. Collagen type IV was seen in all leiomyosarcomas, and was seen weakly in a few small areas in four MFHs. When we take into account the expression of all markers tested [( smooth] muscle actin, desmin, and collagen type IV), then six of the 22 MFHs were unreactive for all these markers. Five of these six tumors were located intramuscularly, whereas only half of the total number of MFH cases had an intramuscular location. The fact that 15 of 22 MFHs displayed one or more markers linked with (smooth) muscle differentiation suggests that some of the MFHs may be classified as poorly differentiated leiomyosarcomas, and that MFH is not a unique entity.  相似文献

Nucleolar organizer regions in uterine sarcomas   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Nucleolar organizer regions demonstrable by silver staining technique (AgNORs) are loops of nucleolar DNA transcribing to ribosomal RNA. This report quantifies AgNORs in normal endometrium and myometrium, and in leiomyomas and homologous sarcomas of the uterus. The mean AgNOR number in leiomyosarcomas was significantly higher than that in normal myometrium and that in leiomyomas, whereas no significant difference was observed between normal myometrium and leiomyomas. The mean AgNOR count in low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas was significantly higher than that in normal endometrial stroma, and significantly lower than that in the high-grade variant of the same tumour. The epithelial component of malignant mixed müllerian tumours exhibited a significantly higher mean AgNOR number than normal endometrial epithelium, and the stromal component of these tumours showed a significantly higher mean AgNOR count than normal endometrial stroma and normal myometrium, respectively. The AgNOR count was significantly correlated with the mitotic rate in leiomyosarcomas, in high-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas, and in the epithelial and mesenchymal portions of mixed müllerian tumours, whereas no statistically significant correlation was observed in low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas. Increased AgNOR counts have been reported for some kinds of malignant tumours in various organs, compared with normal tissues and benign tumours. This study demonstrates a similar increase when homologous uterine sarcomas are compared with histogenetically related normal and neoplastic tissues. AgNOR counting might be a useful adjunct in the classification and grading of uterine tumours.  相似文献

A case of melanotic schwannoma, the 28th reported in the literature and the second to arise in the sympathetic ganglion, was reported in a 39-year-old man who remains free of recurrence or metastasis since removal of the tumor. In common with earlier benign melanotic schwannomas, its ultrastructural study revealed well-developed contiguous external lamina as opposed to absent or only minimally developed external lamina seen in malignant melanotic schwannomas. This emphasizes the use of electron microscopy in the diagnosis of this tumor. The literature yields only nine melanotic tumors (including one malignant melanotic schwannoma) arising in the sympathetic nervous system; all nine tumors had a malignant clinical course. Therefore, the present case represents the first "benign" tumor among ten melanotic tumors, and the second among 28 melanotic schwannomas to arise in the sympathetic nervous system.  相似文献

Approximately 25% of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas of the uterus contain areas of epithelial-like differentiation, which are often reminiscent of ovarian sex-cord tumors. It has been suggested that these areas may represent attempted differentiation toward either uterine glands or smooth muscle. To investigate these two possibilities, we examined the histologic and immunohistochemical features of 26 low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas. Eight tumors had epithelial-like differentiation, which in some tumors was so prominent as to suggest a purely epithelial neoplasm. Areas typical of endometrial stromal sarcoma were vimentin positive, whereas epithelial-like differentiation expressed vimentin and the muscle markers muscle-specific actin and desmin, as well as cytokeratin, but not the epithelial marker epithelial membrane antigen. Epithelial-like differentiation in low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma is not uncommon and, based on our immunohistochemical results after comparison with normal controls, epithelial-like differentiation has a myogenous rather than an epithelial phenotype.  相似文献

The expression of fine and intermediate filaments in 10 cases of leiomyosarcoma originating from a large vein, 9 cases of vascular leiomyoma (angiomyoma) and one case of a leiomyoma originating from the wall of the saphena magna vein was studied immunohistochemically by using 6 different anti-desmin antibodies, one anti-vimentin antibody and 2 antibodies to muscle-specific isoforms of actin. All the benign tumors and all the leiomyosarcomas of a large vein as well as the vein of origin were positively stained for desmin. The staining results obtained using the different anti-desmin antibodies varied considerably, however, and formaldehyde-fixed tissues were apparently inappropriate for some of them. No single anti-desmin antibody produced a positivity in all cases, and the extent and distribution of the positivity varied by being irregular and patchy in the leiomyosarcomas and in the muscle walls of the veins, while the benign tumors generally revealed a more uniform and strong positivity. Antibodies to muscle-specific and smooth muscle-specific actin produced a positive staining in all the benign tumors, as well as all the leiomyosarcomas and the veins from which they originated. A strong and uniform positivity was observed in the benign tumors and muscle walls of the veins, while the positivity in the leiomyosarcomas was more irregular, as it was for desmin. Vimentin was constantly expressed in the benign tumors and in the veins of origin, but only in 5/10 of the leiomyosarcomas. It is concluded from this study that the immunohistochemical demonstration of desmin, utilizing a monoclonal antibody appropriate to the type of fixation used, and muscle specific isoforms of actin, provide strong support to the light-microscopic diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of venous origin.  相似文献

Uterine sarcomas are rare tumors that account for 3% to 7% of uterine cancers. Their histopathologic classification was revised by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003. The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of different subtypes of uterine sarcoma applying the WHO criteria to a series of cases, compare the outcome of patients with different subtypes, and compare their immunoprofiles using a panel of immunomarkers. Thirty-four uterine sarcomas were identified for a 20-year period (1988-2008). Eighteen benign tumors of smooth muscle or endometrial stromal origin served as a comparison group. A tissue microarray was prepared and immunostaining performed for 10 selected oncoproteins involved in cell proliferation (Ki-67, P53, p16, and phosphatase and tensin homolog [PTEN]), cell differentiation (CD10, h-caldesmon, estrogen receptor, and progesterone receptor), and apoptosis (bcl-2 and Twist). Hierarchical clustering analysis of the immunohistochemical results was performed. The uterine sarcomas were classified as follows: 20 leiomyosarcomas, 9 endometrial stromal sarcomas, and 5 undifferentiated endometrial sarcomas. The outcome for patients with uterine sarcoma was poor, irrespective of histologic type, even for those with stage I tumors. Of the patients with follow-up available, 12 (67%) of 18 with leiomyosarcoma, 4 of 5 with undifferentiated sarcoma, and 4 of 7 with endometrial stromal sarcoma experienced recurrence and 8 patients with high-grade sarcomas died of tumor. In our series, most uterine sarcomas were leiomyosarcomas. Comparison was made between leiomyosarcomas that recurred and those with a favorable outcome and 3 patients with leiomyosarcoma without evidence of recurrence on long-term follow-up had tumors that were negative/low expressors of Ki-67, p53, p16, and Twist, with strong expression of bcl-2. A subset of undifferentiated endometrial sarcomas composed of cells with uniform nuclei may be a separate entity from those with nuclear anaplasia and may be related to low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas. It may be possible to identify a subset of leiomyosarcomas with a favorable prognosis based on staining with a panel of immunomarkers for cell proliferation and apoptosis.  相似文献

We performed immunohistochemical analysis for KIT in 365 soft tissue sarcomas. Most tumors evaluated were completely negative for KIT, including all cases of leiomyosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, myxofibrosarcoma, liposarcoma, solitary fibrous tumor, synovial sarcoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, schwannoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, clear cell sarcoma, low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. Tumors showing occasional immunoreactivity for KIT included extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (2/20), Ewing sarcoma/malignant primitive peripheral neuroectodermal tumor (4/20), melanotic schwannoma (3/5), metastatic melanoma (4/20), and angiosarcoma (5/20). In most cases, staining for KIT was focal. Rare tumor cells showing KIT positivity were identified in a small number of other tumors. This study demonstrates very limited expression of KIT in soft tissue tumors other than gastrointestinal stromal tumors and underscores the discriminatory value of KIT immunohistochemical analysis for differential diagnosis. As some of these findings differ markedly from previous reports, it is evident again that variations in immunohistochemical technique can lead to major discrepancies in positive staining. Since treatment eligibility for selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as STI571 hinges on positive immunostaining, standardization and reproducibility of meaningful results are critically important.  相似文献

Misinterpretation of positive staining of antibodies to desmin, smooth muscle actin, and muscle actin as representing smooth muscle differentiation in the context of a spindle cell tumor is not uncommon. Anti-h-caldesmon is a promising novel immunohistochemical reagent for more specific smooth muscle differentiation. We studied 72 tumors (11 leiomyosarcomas, 26 malignant fibrous histiocytomas [MFHs], 11 fibromatoses, 11 cellular cutaneous fibrous histiocytomas [CCFHs], 5 malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, 4 synovial sarcomas, and 4 cases of nodular fasciitis), the reactive myofibroblastic response in 5 cases of acute cholecystitis, and the desmoplastic response surrounding 5 invasive breast carcinomas. Tissues were examined for expression of h-caldesmon, desmin, smooth muscle actin, and muscle actin. Diffuse staining for h-caldesmon was present only within the leiomyosarcomas. Focal staining for h-caldesmon involving less than 1% of lesional cells was present in 3 of 26 MFHs and 1 of 11 CCFHs. There was overlap in staining for the other "myoid" markers in all of the lesions that contained myofibroblasts. Anti-h-caldesmon seems to be a reliable marker of smooth muscle differentiation, and its inclusion in a panel of myoid immunohistochemical reagents should allow distinction of smooth muscle and myofibroblastic tumors.  相似文献

The caveolins belong to a newly described group of membrane-scaffolding proteins. Their presence in benign endothelial cells has been used to discriminate benign from malignant vascular neoplasms. The extent of caveolin expression in cutaneous mesenchymal neoplasms has not yet been evaluated, and thus the diagnostic utility of these antibodies is not yet known. In our study, we immunohistochemically examined a spectrum of tumors derived from smooth muscle and adipocytes for caveolin expression. We found that both benign and malignant smooth muscle tumors and tumors comprised of adipocytes expressed caveolins. The presence of this protein in a range of mesenchymal neoplasms is important to know about as this decreases the reported specificity of a positive finding. It is doubtful that caveolin down-regulation contributes to the pathogenesis of liposarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. This finding also may suggest a common origin between endothelial cells and other mesenchymal cells.  相似文献

The current definition of gastrointestinal tumors (GIST) as CD117-positive mesenchymal tumors of uncertain malignant potential fails to include a number of cases with similar histology. In an attempt to improve the classification of these neoplasms, we conducted an immunohistochemical analysis of 244 mesenchymal tumors with histological features of GIST. According to their immunophenotype, the tumors were classified as GISTs, which are characterized by CD117 (c-kit) expression; gastrointestinal CD117-negative CD34 positive stromal tumors (GINST); alpha-smooth muscle actin and/or desmin positive gastrointestinal leiomyogenic tumors (GILT); S-100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein positive gastrointestinal glial/schwannian tumors (GIGT); gastrointestinal neuronal/glial tumors (GINT), which are positive for S-100/glial fibrillary acidic protein plus neuronal/glial markers; and gastrointestinal fibrous tumors (GIFT), which are only vimentin positive. The most common type of tumors were GIST, followed in order of frequency by GINST, GILT, GIGT, GIFT, and GINT. GISTs did not show any preferential location, whereas GINSTs occurred almost exclusively in the stomach and duodenum, and GILTs preferentially in the large intestine. Over a median follow-up period of 71 months, malignant behavior, i.e., metastatic spread, was observed in all tumor types except GINTs. Malignancy was associated with distal gut location, high mitotic activity, large tumor size, and nuclear pleomorphism, though none of these criteria alone discriminated between benign and malignant. Kaplan-Meier analysis of disease-specific survival showed significant differences in the long-term outcome of the newly defined subgroups. We conclude that, despite strong morphological similarities, gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors are heterogeneous in their immunophenotype and biology.  相似文献
