A pilot program of general training in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (C P R) and Basic Life Support (BLS) sponsored by Sicily Regional Administration is illustrated. A practical training in Basic C P R and Emergency Care is offerec to many categories of population and High School students (aged 14-16 years).     

Analysis of the collective term "periarthritis humeroscapularis"]

The functional and anatomical consideration of the shoulder joint in relation to the clinical aspects can differentiate the general term of "scapulohumeral periarthritis". The most frequently pathological findings are seen in the rotary cuff and the long head of the biceps muscle. Significant causes are further arthrosis of the acromioclavicular joint, the instability of the shoulder joint and the frozen shoulder. The exact diagnosis of the disease makes on operative therapy possible.     

Initial results of the Project of the German Breast Cancer Study Group on "Breast saving therapy of the small breast cancer"]

In the German Breast Cancer Study Group (GBSG) multicenter trial "Breast preservation in small breast cancer" 1119 patients were accrued over a period of six years. The study was originally designed as a randomized trial which had to be changed into a prospective observation study. A high therapeutic standard was guaranteed by quality control. The univariate analysis of prognostic variables was the first step to a valid treatment comparison. Those factors determined as being significant were combined with the treatment effects in a multivariate analysis. The published results were obtained after a median observation time of four years.     

Treatment of hand injuries on the principle of "delayed emergency"]

A certain number of drunk patients who suffered hand injury were not prone to operation on the day of admission, as usual, for different reasons (behaviour of the patient etc.). These patients were treated on the delayed urgency principle, that Iselin worked out. Results in the 266 cases were surprisingly good. There were much less complications with this method, compared to previous results achieved when primary treatment of wounds was practised. Yet more experience is necessary, to work out certain details and more exact indications, the authors state.     

Postoperative blood-sugar regulation in pancreatectomized patients using the artificial "beta cell"]

Seven patients who had undergone total duodenopancreatectomy were connected postoperatively to an artificial 'beta cell', which is a computer-regulated, glucose-controlled-insulin-infusion-system. Despite high-calorie parenteral nutrition, the apparatus enabled successful regulation of the diabetes that followed removal of the pancreas in our patients during the immediate postoperative period (7 days). The artificial beta cell is capable of exogenously regulating the carbohydrate metabolism of pancreatectomized diabetics, even in the extreme conditions immediately following operation.     

The prevention and treatment of the deep phlegmons of "diabetic foot"]

Based on clinical observations of pyo-necrotic lesions of the foot in patients with diabetic mellitus and on an analysis of their personal operations performed on these patients the authors support the tendency to local necrotomies. Two original operations are proposed: ablation of the great toe with a preliminary transection of the tendon of the long flexor and radical operation of the deep phlegmon of the foot with the dissection of plantar aponeurosis and short flexors of the toes. These methods allow the general amount of amputations and lethality to be decreased.
