The mechanical properties of dissimilar metal-welded joint materials are heterogeneous, which is an obstacle to the safety evaluation of key welded structures. The variation of stress–strain conditions at the crack tip caused by mismatch of material mechanical properties in dissimilar metal-welded joints is an important factor affecting crack propagation behavior. To understand the influence of uneven distribution of ultimate strength of the base metal and the welded metal on the crack propagation path, fracture toughness, as well as the mechanical field at the crack tip in the small-scale yield range, the user-defined field variable subroutine method is used to express continuous variation characteristics of welded joint ultimate strength in finite element software. In addition, the J-integral during crack propagation is calculated, and the effect of the ultimate strength on the J-integral and the stress field at the crack tip are analyzed. The results show that as the crack propagation direction is perpendicular to the direction of ultimate strength, the gradient of ultimate strength increases from |Gy|= 50 to |Gy|= 100 MPa/mm, the crack deflection angle increases by 0.018%, and the crack length increases by 1.46%. The fracture toughness of the material decreased slightly during crack propagation. Under the condition that the crack propagation direction is the same as the direction of ultimate strength, the crack propagation path is a straight line. As the gradient of ultimate strength increases from Gx = 50 to Gx = 100 MPa/mm, the crack propagation length decreases by 5.17%, and the slope of fracture toughness curve increases by 51.63%. On the contrary, as the crack propagates to the low ultimate strength side, the crack propagation resistance decreases, the ultimate strength gradient increases from Gx = −100 to Gx = −50 MPa/mm, and the slope of the fracture toughness curve decreases by 51.01%. It is suggested to consider the relationship between crack growth behavior and ultimate strength when designing and evaluating the structural integrity of cracks at the material interface of dissimilar metal-welded joints.  相似文献

The high cooling rate and temperature gradient caused by the rapid heating and cooling characteristics of laser welding (LW) leads to excessive thermal stress and even cracks in welded joints. In order to solve these problems, a dynamic preheating method that uses hybrid laser arc welding to add an auxiliary heat source (arc) to LW was proposed. The finite element model was deployed to investigate the effect of dynamic preheating on the thermal behavior of LW. The accuracy of the heat transfer model was verified experimentally. Hardness and tensile testing of the welded joint were conducted. The results show that using the appropriate current leads to a significantly reduced cooling rate and temperature gradient, which are conducive to improving the hardness and mechanical properties of welded joints. The yield strength of welded joints with a 20 A current for dynamic preheating is increased from 477.0 to 564.3 MPa compared with that of LW. Therefore, the use of dynamic preheating to reduce the temperature gradient is helpful in reducing thermal stress and improving the tensile properties of the joint. These results can provide new ideas for welding processes.  相似文献

The crack tip strain and stress condition are one of the main factors affecting stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviors in the dissimilar metal welded joint of the primary circuit in the pressurized water reactor. The mechanical property mismatch of base metal and weld metal can significantly affect the stress and strain condition around the crack tip. To understand the effect of different weld metals on strain and stress fields at SCC crack tips, the effects of strength mismatch, work hardening mismatch, and their synergy on the strain and stress field of SCC in the bi-material interface, including plastic zone, stress state, and corresponding J-integral, are investigated in small-scale yielding using the finite element method. The results show a significant effect of the strength mismatch and work hardening mismatch on the plastic zone and stress state in the weld metal and a negligible effect in the base metal. J-integral decreases with the single increase in either strength mismatch or work hardening mismatch. Either the increase in strength mismatch or work hardening mismatch will inhibit the other’s effect on the J-integral, and a synthetic mismatch factor can express this synergistic effect.  相似文献

Environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) is essential in predicting light water reactors’ structural integrity and service life. Alloy 600 (equivalent to Inconel 600) has excellent corrosion resistance and is often used as a welding material in welded joints, but material properties of the alloy are heterogeneous in the welded zone due to the complex welding process. To investigate the EAC crack growth behavior of Alloy 600 for safe-end welded joints, the method taken in this paper concerns the probability prediction of the EAC crack growth rate. It considers the material heterogeneity, combining the film slip-dissolution/oxidation model, and the elastic-plastic finite element method. The strain rate at the crack tip is a unique factor to describe the mechanical state. Still, it is challenging to accurately predict it because of the complicated and heterogeneous material microstructure. In this study, the effects of material heterogeneity on the EAC crack growth behavior are statistically analyzed. The results show that the material heterogeneity of Alloy 600 can not be ignored because it affects the prediction accuracy of the crack growth rate. The randomness of yield strength has the most influence on the EAC growth rate, while Poisson’s ratio has the smallest.  相似文献

The CRTS I type double-block ballastless track (CRTS I TDBBT) has the advantages of convenient construction and low cost, but it has low crack resistance and the temperature field distribution of the railway on the bridge is uneven and frequently changes, so it is necessary to study the mechanical properties of the CRTS I TDBBT under the load of a temperature field. The temperature field model of the CRTS I TDBBT on the bridge is established by finite element software, the real-time temperature field of the track bed slab is brought into the coupled model as a load, and the variation laws of the temperature stress of the CRTS I TDBBT under different schemes are compared. The temperature gradient in the CRTS I TDBBT track bed slab has the largest fluctuation range, and the positive and negative temperature gradient range can reach 93.34 °C. For the temperature longitudinal stress around the sleeper block of the track bed slab, the edge is the largest; the temperature longitudinal stress is reduced by at most 5.27% after the anti-cracking diagonal bars are added. When the expansion joint is added, the temperature stress can be reduced by up to 80.29%. The fluctuation range of the temperature gradient of the track bed is basically consistent with the fluctuation range of the local air temperature. The huge temperature difference leads to the occurrence of cracks in the track structure, and cracks are more likely to occur at the corners of the sleeper block. The addition of both anti-crack diagonal bars and expansion joints has an anti-crack effect, but the effect of adding expansion joints is better.  相似文献

The adherends notching technique has been the subject of a few recent studies and consists of tailoring the geometry of the adjoined layers to mitigate the bondline peak stresses and enhance the joint strength. In the present study, we explored the effect of the adherends notching technique on crack propagation using finite element (FE) simulations based on the cohesive zone model (CZM) of fracture. Double cantilever beam (DCB) adhesive joints subjected to quasistatic loading were considered as a model material system. An array of equally spaced notches was placed on the faying sides of the adherends, oriented perpendicularly to the direction of crack growth. A parametric investigation was carried out to ascertain the role of the notches and the input cohesive properties on various performance metrics, e.g., load–displacement response and dissipated energy. The proposed notching strategy promotes an unstable crack pinning/depinning process, which effectively delays crack growth and increases the effective work of fracture. Additionally, we found that the overall behaviour is tunable by changing geometric (i.e., notch spacing and depth) and bondline material properties.  相似文献

In this study, metal inert gas welding (MIG) was applied to 4 mm thick 6005A-T6 aluminum alloy welding. Compared with other parts, the hardness of the weld zone (WZ) was the lowest, about 67 HV. There was the Softening in WZ, which might make WZ the weakest zone. Then, fatigue tests were carried out on MIG welded joints. All the fatigue specimens fractured at the weld toe of the lap joint, and the fracture was characterized by a cleavage fracture. Crack closure induced by oxide was observed during the steady propagation of the fatigue crack. Impurities hindered crack propagation, changed the direction of crack propagation, and appeared in stepped fatigue strip distribution morphology; in the process of the main crack propagation, the initiation and propagation of small cracks were easily restricted and hindered by the main crack, which slowed down the propagation rate and even stopped the propagation directly.  相似文献

This paper aims to explore the fatigue life estimation approach of welded joints with precrack under coupled impact and fatigue loading, and the base metal is dissimilar 5083H111 and 5754 aluminum alloy. Impact tests are first carried out on the dissimilar lightweight materials welded joint with precrack located in the middle of the specimen, and a stress and strain field is obtained to determine the fatigue damage model parameters by using finite element dynamic analysis to simulate the impact process. Based, on the S-N curve of welded joints, the predicted life expectancy is found to be inconsistent with the experimental results. According to the continuum damage mechanics, the lifetime assessment model is presented to calculate both impact and fatigue damage. The estimated results agree well with the experimental ones.  相似文献

The fracture behavior of the Cu/Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Sn (SAC305)/Cu solder joint was investigated by conducting tensile tests with in situ X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) observation, and finite element (FE) simulation. The tensile fracture process of solder joints with a real internal defect structure was simulated and compared with the experimental results in terms of defect distribution and fracture path. Additionally, the stress distribution around the defects during the tensile process was calculated. The experimental results reveal that the pores near the intermetallic compound (IMC) layers and the flaky cracks inside the solder significantly affected the crack path. The aggregation degree of the spherical pores and the angle between the crack surface and the loading direction controlled the initiation position and propagation path of the cracks. The fracture morphology indicates that the fracture of the IMC layer was brittle, while the solder fracture exhibited ductile tearing. There are significant differences in the fracture morphology under tensile and shear loading.  相似文献

Residual compressive stress can improve fretting fatigue strength. In this paper, the effects of residual stress on fretting fatigue of Al 2024-T351 alloy specimens are studied using a numerical approach. The extended finite element method combined with the cyclic cohesive zone model is adopted to model fretting fatigue crack growth behavior. It is shown that residual stress changes the fretting fatigue crack growth path and enhances fretting fatigue life. Crack initiation angle, depth of knee point, crack initiation life, crack propagation life and total life are greater for specimens with residual stress compared to specimens without residual stress. The effects of residual stress are more remarkable for specimens with a high intensity of residual stress. However, the effects of residual stress reduce at a high bulk load level.  相似文献

This paper proposed an efficient two-dimensional fatigue crack growth simulation program for linear elastic materials using an incremental crack growth procedure. The Visual Fortran programming language was used to develop the finite element code. The adaptive finite element mesh was generated using the advancing front method. Stress analysis for each increment was carried out using the adaptive mesh finite element technique. The equivalent stress intensity factor is the most essential parameter that should be accurately estimated for the mixed-mode loading condition which was used as the onset criterion for the crack growth. The node splitting and relaxation method advances the crack once the failure mechanism and crack direction have been determined. The displacement extrapolation technique (DET) was used to calculate stress intensity factors (SIFs) at each crack extension increment. Then, these SIFs were analyzed using the maximum circumferential stress theory (MCST) to predict the crack propagation trajectory and the fatigue life cycles using the Paris’ law model. Finally, the performance and capability of the developed program are shown in the application examples.  相似文献

The paper presents a numerical model based on the finite element method (FEM) to predict deformations and residual stresses in socket welding of different diameter stainless steel pipes made of X5CrNi18-10 steel. The next part of the paper concerns the determination of strength properties of a welded joint in terms of a shear test. A thermo-elastic–plastic numerical model is developed using Abaqus FEA software in order to determine the thermal and mechanical phenomena of the welded joint. This approach requires the implementation of moveable heat source power intensity distribution based on circumferentially moving Goldak’s heat source model. This model is implemented in the additional DFLUX subroutine, written in Fortran programming language. The correctness of the assumed model of thermal phenomena is confirmed by examinations of the shape and size of the melted zone. The strength of the welded joint subjected to shear is verified by performing a compression test of welded pipes as well as computer simulations with validation of the computational model using the Dantec 3D image correlation system.  相似文献

The problem of crack propagation from internal defects in thermoplastic cylindrical bearing elements is addressed in this paper. The crack propagation in these elements takes place under mixed-mode conditions—i.e., all three possible loading modes (tensile opening mode I and shear opening modes II and III) of the crack are combined together. Moreover, their mutual relation changes during the rotation of the element. The dependency of the stress intensity factors on the crack length was described by general parametric equations. The model was then modified by adding a void to simulate the presence of a manufacturing defect. It was found that the influence of the void on the stress intensity factor values is quite high, but it fades with crack propagating further from the void. The effect of the friction between the crack faces was find negligible on stress intensity factor values. The results presented in this paper can be directly used for the calculation of bearing elements lifetime without complicated finite element simulations.  相似文献

This paper describes a method of predicting the direction of crack propagation implemented by user subroutines in the Simulia-Abaqus FEA system with the use of the extended finite element method (X-FEM). This method is based on displacements and stresses according to Westergaard’s solution of Griffith’s crack problem. During the calculations, in each crack increment, the algorithm reads the stresses and displacements in the model around the crack tip, calculates the criterion values at the read points, reduces them to a unit distance from the crack tip, fits a polynomial to these points, and finds the minimum of the function closest to the last propagation angle. The algorithm also decides when the crack grows, depending on a chosen criterion. Four criteria have been implemented to predict the direction of failure propagation: the maximum principal stress criterion, the Ottosen–Podgórski criterion, the new criterion described here based on the minimum component values of the displacement vector, and the maximum circumferential tensile stress (MTS). These criteria were verified in two tests: the three-point bending test of the notched beam and the anchor pull-out test. For these tests, the criterion built into Simulia Abaqus does not correctly define the crack path, which causes the crack propagation direction to “rotate” when simulating the fracture. The criteria developed here, in most cases, determine the crack path and the maximum force very well compared to real laboratory tests.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to include a local variation in material properties to simulate the fracture behaviour in a multi-pass mis-matched X-weld joint. The base material was welded with an over and under-match strength material. The local variation was represented in a finite element model with five material groups in the weld and three layers in the heat-affected zone. The groups were assigned randomly to the elements within a region. A three-point single edge notch bending (SENB) fracture mechanics specimen was analysed for two different configurations where either the initial crack is in the over or under-matched material side to simulate experimentally obtained results. The used modelling approach shows comparable crack propagation and stiffness behaviour, as well as the expected, scatter and instabilities of measured fracture behaviour in inhomogeneous welds.  相似文献

A prediction model of the welding process of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was established by using the finite element method, which was used to evaluate the phase composition, residual stress and deformation of the welded joints of Ti-6Al-4V sheets with different processes (including tungsten inert gas welding, TIG, and laser beam welding, LBW). The Ti-6Al-4V structures of TIG welding and LBW are widely used in marine engineering. In order to quantitatively study the effects of different welding processes (including TIG welding and LBW) on the microstructure evolution, macro residual stress and deformation of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy sheets during welding, a unified prediction model considering solid-state phase transformation was established based on the ABAQUS subroutine. In this paper, LBW and TIG welding experiments of 1.6 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets were designed. The microstructure distribution of the welded joints observed in the experiment was consistent with the phase composition predicted by the model, and the hardness measurement experiment could also verify the phase composition and proportion. From the residual stress measured by experiment and the residual stress and deformation calculated by finite element simulation of LBW and TIG weldments, it is concluded that the effect of phase transformation on residual stress is mainly in the weld area, which has an effect on the distribution of tensile and compressive stress in the weld area. The overall deformation of the welded joint is mainly related to the welding process, and the phase transformation only affects the local volume change of the weld seam. Importantly, the phase composition and residual stress, which are scalar fields, calculated by the established model can be introduced into the numerical analysis of structural fracture failure as input influence factors.  相似文献

In this paper, a comparison of the mechanical properties of high-strength low-alloy S460N steel welded joints is presented. The welded joints were made by the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process in the air environment and water, by the local cavity welding method. Welded joints were tested following the EN ISO 15614-1:2017 standard. After welding, the non-destructive—visual, penetrant, radiographic, and ultrasonic (phased array) tests were performed. In the next step, the destructive tests, as static tensile-, bending-, impact- metallographic (macroscopic and microscopic) tests, and Vickers HV10 measurements were made. The influence of weld porosity on the mechanical properties of the tested joints was also assessed. The performed tests showed that the tensile strength of the joints manufactured in water (567 MPa) could be similar to the air welded joint (570 MPa). The standard deviations from the measurements were—47 MPa in water and 33 MPa in the air. However, it was also stated that in the case of a complex state of stress, for example, bending, torsional and tensile stresses, the welding imperfections (e.g., pores) significantly decrease the properties of the welded joint. In areas characterized by porosity the tensile strength decreased to 503 MPa. Significant differences were observed for bending tests. During the bending of the underwater welded joint, a smaller bending angle broke the specimen than was the case during the air welded joint bending. Also, the toughness and hardness of joints obtained in both environments were different. The minimum toughness for specimens welded in water was 49 J (in the area characterized by high porosity) and in the air it was 125 J (with a standard deviation of 23 J). The hardness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) for the underwater joint in the non-tempered area was above 400 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 37 HV10) and for the air joint below 300 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 17 HV10). The performed investigations showed the behavior of S460N steel, which is characterized by a high value of carbon equivalent (CeIIW) 0.464%, during local cavity welding.  相似文献

Assessing the temperature of the joint in on-line mode is a vital task that is demanded to characterize the formations of terns formations that are taking place in a joint and result in reaching necessary properties of the joint. Arc welding generates a high amount of heat that is reflected by the metallic surface of the welded object. In the paper, a temperature measurement credibility increase method is described and evaluated. The proposed method is used to reduce the influence of the reflected temperature of the hot torch and the arc on the temperature distribution observed on the surface of the welded joint using an infrared camera. The elaborated approach is based on comparison between infrared observation of the solidifying weld and precisely performed finite element method (FEM) simulation. The FEM simulations were calibrated according to the geometry of the fusion zone. It allows to precisely model heat source properties. The best-reflected temperature correction map was selected and applied to obtain a temperature representation that differs from the FEM baseline by less than 10 °C. Precise temperature values allowed us to cluster welded joints in 3D feature space (temperature, hardness, linear energy). It was found that by using the k-means clustering method it is possible to distinguish between correct and faulty (in terms of too low mechanical properties) joints.  相似文献

Friction stir lap welding (FSLW) is expected to join the hybrid structure of aluminum alloy and steel. In this study, the Al-Mg-Si aluminum alloy and 301L stainless steel were diffusion bonded by FSLDW with the addition of 0.1 mm thick pure Zn interlayer, when the tool pin did not penetrate the upper aluminum sheet. The characteristics of lap interface and mechanical properties of the joint were analyzed. Under the addition of Zn interlayer, the diffusion layer structure at lap interface changed from continuous to uneven and segmented. The components of the diffusion layer were more complex, including Fe-Al intermetallic compounds (IMCs), Fe-Zn IMCs and Al-Zn eutectic. The largely changed composition and thickness of uneven and segmented diffusion layer at the lap interface played a significant role in the joint strength. The tensile shear load of Zn-added joint was 6.26 kN, increasing by 41.3% than that of Zn-not-added joint. These two joints exhibited interfacial shear fracture, while the Zn interlayer enhanced the strength of diffusion bonding by extending the propagation path of cracks.  相似文献

Riveting is widely used in aircraft manufacturing. The strap butt joint is often used in the aircraft’s main bearing area such as the aircraft docking area. The connection quality affects the reliability and safety of the aircraft directly. To study the effect of the rivet position on the connection quality of the strap butt joints, this paper analyzed the distribution of stress around the rivet hole at different positions by the finite element method, and then further analyzed the influence of the different rivet layouts on the connection quality of the strap butt joints by experiments. The static load tensile failure test of the joints was carried out, and the obtained tensile strength and failure mode of the strap butt joints showed that the main static tensile failure form of the single strap butt joint is that the whole rivets is sheared and the connecting sheets are separated. By changing the layout of different rivets, the connection strength can be maximized by reducing the outer row spacing (ORSD) of rivets. The results can be used for reference in the design of the riveting structure of aircraft panels.  相似文献
