Cutaneous reflexes evoked in the muscles of the arms with electrical stimulation of nerves of the foot ("interlimb reflexes") are observed during walking. These reflexes have been suggested to coordinate the actions of the legs and arms when walking is disturbed. Recently, we showed that cutaneous reflexes evoked in the leg muscles after stimulation at the foot are modulated according to the level of postural threat during walking. We hypothesized that the amplitude of interlimb cutaneous reflexes would similarly be modulated when subjects walk in unstable environments. Subjects walked on a treadmill under four walking conditions: 1) normal; 2) normal with unpredictable anterior-posterior (AP) perturbations; 3) arms crossed; and 4) arms crossed with unpredictable AP perturbations. Interlimb reflexes evoked from electrical stimulation of the right superficial peroneal or sural nerves were recorded bilaterally, at four points of the step cycle. These reflexes were compared between conditions in which the arms were moving in a similar manner: 1) normal versus AP walking and 2) arms crossed versus arms crossed with AP perturbations. Differences in reflex amplitudes between arms-crossed conditions were observed in most upper limb muscles when subjects were perturbed while walking compared with undisturbed walking. This effect was less apparent when the arms were swinging freely. The results indicate that the strength of interlimb connections is influenced by the level of postural threat (i.e., the context of the behavior), thereby suggesting that these reflexes serve a functional link between the legs and arms during locomotion.  相似文献

Summary Hoffmann (H) reflexes were elicited from the soleus (SOL) muscle while subjects walked on a treadmill and on a narrow beam (3.5 cm wide, raised 34 cm from the floor). The speed of walking on the treadmill was selected for each subject to match the background activation level of their SOL muscle during beam walking. The normal reciprocal activation pattern of the tibialis anterior and SOL muscles in treadmill walking was replaced by a pattern dominated by co-contraction on the beam. In addition, the step cycle duration was more variable and the time spent in the swing phase was reduced on the beam. The H-reflexes were highly modulated in both tasks, the amplitude being high in the stance phase and low in the swing phase. The H-reflex amplitude was on average 40% lower during beam walking than treadmill walking. The relationship between the H-reflex amplitude and the SOL EMG level was quantified by a regression line relating the two variables. The slope of this line was on average 41% lower in beam walking than treadmill walking. The lower H-reflex gain observed in this study and the high level of fusimotor drive observed in cats performing similar tasks suggest that the two mechanisms which control the excitability of this reflex pathway (i.e. fusimotor action and control of transmission at the muscle spindle to motoneuron synapse) may be controlled independently.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate changes of H-reflex amplitudes during a motor learning task. Subjects with reduced vision were instructed to step over an obstacle on a treadmill as low as possible, while the soleus H-reflex was elicited. Acoustic warning and feedback signals about performance were provided. Performance improvement was associated with a decrease of muscle activity, needed to step over the obstacle (rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius medialis muscles), and of foot clearance, while joint angle trajectories from knee and ankle became more stable. The experiment consisted of five runs, three with normal treadmill walking and two with randomly stepping over the obstacle (100 times). H-reflexes were elicited at early and late stance phase before stepping over the obstacle. H/M ratio, latency and duration were determined. The values of these measures were calculated for the onset and end of a run and their course over time was evaluated using a correlation coefficient. The largest adaptations with a significant increase of reflex amplitude occurred during the first obstacle run. This increase lasted only briefly and the reflex amplitudes decreased to their previous values. During the later obstacle run, no H-reflex modulation occurred. It is concluded that a motor learning task causes adaptational effects not only on performance, but also on H-reflex responses. The results indicate that most of the modulation of H-reflexes is probably due to supraspinal influences on reflex transmission. The observations made are probably less specific for this motor task (stepping over the obstacle), but rather associated with the increased attention required by the motor learning task during the first obstacle run.  相似文献

Summary Amplitude modulation of the quadriceps tendon jerk reflex was investigated during the step cycle in normal human subjects. Reflex amplitude was compared with that obtained during a control stance condition, with equivalent levels of EMG activity and limb position. During gait there was a progressive decrease in the reflex amplitude early in the stance phase, i.e. during yielding of the knee, and it remained reduced throughout the step cycle. This pattern of changes in reflex amplitude correlated with neither the quadriceps EMG activity nor with the knee joint movements. The behavior of the tendon reflex was similar to that described for the modulation of the quadriceps H-reflex during the early stages of the stance phase of gait. In the latter study it was argued that changes in presynaptic inhibition of quadriceps la terminals could account for the amplitude modulation. We conclude that there is no dramatic change in the gamma drive to quadriceps muscle spindles: tendon reflexes are modulated during the step cycle in much the same way as H-reflexes, in spite of the peripheral and central differences between them. Similar behavior has been described for the soleus H-reflex and Achilles tendon reflex during gait although the modulation of these reflexes followed a different pattern than that seen in the quadriceps.  相似文献

The soleus H-reflex modulation pattern was investigated in ten spinal cord intact subjects during treadmill walking at varying levels of body weight support (BWS), and nine spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects at a BWS level that promoted the best stepping pattern. The soleus H-reflex was elicited by tibial nerve stimulation with a single 1-ms pulse at an intensity that the M-waves ranged from 4 to 8% of the maximal M-wave (Mmax). During treadmill walking, the H-reflex was elicited every four steps, and stimuli were randomly dispersed across the gait cycle which was divided into 16 equal bins. EMGs were recorded with surface electrodes from major left and right hip, knee, and ankle muscles. M-waves and H-reflexes at each bin were normalized to the Mmax elicited at 60–100 ms after the test reflex stimulus. For every subject, the integrated EMG area of each muscle was established and plotted as a function of the step cycle phase. The H-reflex gain was determined as the slope of the relationship between H-reflex and soleus EMG amplitudes at 60 ms before H-reflex elicitation for each bin. In spinal cord intact subjects, the phase-dependent H-reflex modulation, reflex gain, and EMG modulation pattern were constant across all BWS (0, 25, and 50) levels, while tibialis anterior muscle activity increased with less body loading. In three out of nine SCI subjects, a phase-dependent H-reflex modulation pattern was evident during treadmill walking at BWS that ranged from 35 to 60%. In the remaining SCI subjects, the most striking difference was an absent H-reflex depression during the swing phase. The reflex gain was similar for both subject groups, but the y-intercept was increased in SCI subjects. We conclude that the mechanisms underlying cyclic H-reflex modulation during walking are preserved in some individuals after SCI.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of gravity-related somatosensory information on spinal human reflexes, the soleus H-reflex was recorded in ten healthy subjects walking on a treadmill at 2.0 km/h on land and in water. The modulation pattern of the soleus H-reflex was determined in ten different phases of the step cycle. While the subjects were walking in water, the background electromyographic activity (BGA) of the soleus was lower than that on land; on the other hand, the soleus H-reflex amplitude while the subjects were walking in water showed no significant differences throughout the step cycle compared with that while the subjects were on land; the phase-dependent soleus H-reflex modulation pattern was well preserved while walking in water. There was a linear relationship between the BGA and the H-reflex amplitude in each condition; however, the soleus H-reflex gain while walking in water was significantly higher than that on land. These findings suggest that the somatosensory graviception can markedly reduce the spinal reflex excitability. Our findings are discussed in relation to human gait; therefore, further studies are needed to clarify the effect of somatosensory graviception on human neural mechanisms.  相似文献

We recently showed that cutaneous reflexes evoked by stimulating the superficial peroneal (SP; innervates foot dorsum) nerve are modulated according to the level of postural threat. Context-related modulation was observed mainly in contralateral (c) responses but not in the ipsilateral responses. This lack of effect on ipsilateral (i) cutaneous reflexes might have been caused by the general nature of the whole body perturbation. We therefore hypothesized that context-relevant mechanical perturbations applied to the dorsum of the foot by an instrumented rod at early swing during walking would produce differences in ipsilateral cutaneous reflex amplitudes, consistent with the functional relevance of the SP nerve in stumble correction responses. Subjects walked on a motorized treadmill under four conditions: 1) normal, 2) normal with mechanical perturbations at the foot dorsum, 3) arms crossed, and 4) arms crossed with mechanical perturbations at the foot dorsum. Electrical stimulation of the SP nerve was delivered at five phases of the step cycle, and cutaneous reflexes were compared between all conditions for each phase of the step cycle. Reflex responses were generally found to be modulated in amplitude during walking conditions in which mechanical perturbations were delivered, particularly in ipsilateral tibialis anterior (iTA), which showed a marked reduction in inhibition. The results indicated cutaneous reflexes in iTA and contralateral medial gastrocnemius (cMG) were influenced by the threat of a trip, induced by applying mechanical perturbations to the foot dorsum during walking. This task-related gating of cutaneous reflexes was not generalized to all muscles, thus suggesting a functional role in the maintenance of stability during locomotion.  相似文献

During locomotor tasks such as walking, running, and swimming, the arms move rhythmically with the legs. It has been suggested that connections between the cervical and lumbosacral spinal cord may mediate some of this interlimb coordination. However, it is unclear how these interlimb pathways modulate reflex excitability during movement. We hypothesized that rhythmic arm movement would alter the gain of reflex pathways in the stationary leg. Soleus H-reflexes recorded during arm cycling were compared with those recorded at similar positions with the arms stationary. Nerve stimulation was delivered with the right arm at approximately 70 degrees shoulder flexion or 10 degrees shoulder extension. H-reflexes were evoked alone (unconditioned) or with sural or common peroneal nerve (CP) conditioning to decrease or increase soleus IA presynaptic inhibition, respectively. Both conditioning stimuli were also delivered with no H-reflex stimulation. H-reflex amplitudes were compared at similar M-wave amplitudes and activation levels of the soleus. Arm cycling significantly reduced (P < 0.05) unconditioned soleus H-reflexes at shoulder flexion by 21.7% and at shoulder extension by 8.8% compared with static controls. The results demonstrate a task-dependent modulation of soleus H-reflexes between arm cycling and stationary trials. Sural nerve stimulation facilitated H-reflexes at shoulder extension but not at shoulder flexion during static and cycling trials. CP nerve stimulation significantly reduced H-reflex amplitude in all conditions. Reflexes in soleus when sural and CP nerve stimulation were delivered alone, were not different between cycling and static trials; thus the task-dependent change in H reflex amplitude was not due to changes in motoneuron excitability. Therefore modulation occurred at a pre-motoneuronal level, probably by presynaptic inhibition of the IA afferent volley. Results indicate that neural networks coupling the cervical and lumbosacral spinal cord in humans are activated during rhythmic arm movement. It is proposed that activation of these networks may assist in reflex linkages between the arms and legs during locomotor tasks.  相似文献

In comparison to the H-reflex, the task dependency of the human stretch reflex during locomotive and postural tasks has not received a great deal of attention in the literature. The few studies on reflex task dependency that have been performed to date have concentrated on either the group Ia mediated H-reflex or the short latency stretch reflex. In the present study the medium latency component of a mechanically evoked stretch reflex is investigated during walking, pedalling, and sitting. Stretch reflexes were evoked in the soleus muscle using dorsiflexion perturbations generated with a portable stretching device. Perturbations of equal amplitude and velocity (8 deg, 300 deg/s) were presented to 16 healthy subjects while they walked on a treadmill and pedalled a cycle ergometer. For eight of these subjects, an additional set of data was collected as they sat on the ergometer holding a steady posture. Perturbations were presented in the early to mid stance phase of walking and the downstroke of the pedal cycle. During all three conditions, the background soleus muscle activity was matched. The short (SLR) and medium (MLR) components of the soleus reflex responses were quantified by calculating the area of each burst in a 15-ms window centred on the peak of the respective burst. In addition, the stretch velocity-stretch reflex input-output curve was examined for the two locomotion tasks over a range of velocities from 100 to 400 deg/s. Peak latencies for the two reflex responses were observed at 52+/-5/77+/-6 ms (SLR/MLR) for walking, 51+/-3/76+/-6 ms (SLR/MLR) for pedalling, and 50+/-3/76+/-7 ms for sitting. A statistically significant increase in the magnitude of the MLR was observed during walking compared with pedalling and sitting ( P=0.007), whereas no difference in magnitude was observed between the three tasks for the SLR ( P=0.616). Furthermore, no difference was observed in the stretch velocity-stretch reflex input-output relationship between walking and pedalling. It is suggested that the medium component of the stretch reflex response is modulated to provide increased control for the postural demands of walking.  相似文献

We investigated the modulation of the soleus (Sol) Hoffmann (H-) reflex excitability by peripheral sensory inputs during passive stepping using a robotic-driven gait orthosis in healthy subjects and spinal cord-injured patients. The Sol H-reflex was evoked at standing and at six phases during passive stepping in 40 and 100% body weight unloaded conditions. The Sol H-reflex excitability was significantly inhibited during passive stepping when compared with standing posture at each unloaded condition. During passive stepping, the H-reflex amplitude was significantly smaller in the early- and mid-swing phases than in the stance phase, which was similar to the modulation pattern previously reported for normal walking. No significant differences were observed in the H-reflex amplitude between the two unloaded conditions during passive stepping. The reflex depression observed at the early part of the swing phase during passive stepping might be attributed to the sensory inputs elicited by flexion of the hip and knee joints. The present study provides evidence that peripheral sensory inputs have a significant role in phase-dependent modulation of the Sol H-reflex during walking, and that the Sol H-reflex excitability might be less affected by load-related afferents during walking.  相似文献

Recently, Brooke and colleagues have suggested "that the strong inhibition arising from passive movement about the knee and hip joints, lays down the base for the soleus H-reflex gain modulation seen during human gait." In particular stretch-evoked afferent activity from the quadriceps muscle was emphasized as the most important source of movement-induced inhibition of the H-reflex. To test this hypothesis we examined the kinematics and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the leg during human walking and correlated these with the modulation pattern of the soleus H-reflex. To further test the possible contribution of stretch-evoked quadriceps afferent activity to the soleus H-reflex modulation pattern during walking different walking gaits were studied. In one condition subjects were asked to walk with their knee locked in full extension by a rigid knee brace. In a second condition subjects were asked to walk backwards. During normal walking, the soleus H-reflex modulation pattern is strongly correlated with the EMG events of the soleus and tibialis anterior (TA), but not with hip, knee, or ankle angular displacement or velocity. When subjects walked with the knee locked in full extension, the amplitude of the H-reflex, its modulation pattern, and the task-dependent changes of its amplitude were the same as during normal walking. During backward walking, the H-reflex increases in late swing before activity of the soleus has begun and while the knee is flexing, an observation that highlights central control of the H-reflex amplitude. The effects of imposed flexion of the knee in passive subjects were also reexamined. The knee flexion imposed by the experimenter followed the same trajectory as that which occurred during the swing phase of the subject's step cycle. It was found that imposed knee flexions elicited a burst of TA EMG activity with an average latency of 81.6 ms (SD = 21 ms) in six out of eight subjects. Inhibition of the H-reflex, when it occurred, was associated with the occurrence of this burst. When subjects voluntarily flexed their right knee from an initial quiet standing posture, the inhibition of the soleus H-reflex began before flexion of the knee or that of any other leg segment. Once again the onset of inhibition was closely associated with the onset of activity in the TA. In the discussion section the present observations are examined in light of the predictions made by the movement-induced inhibition hypothesis of Brooke et al. It will be concluded that none of the predictions of this hypothesis were corroborated by present tests done during human walking. In consequence, we suggest that the modulation pattern of the H-reflex observed during normal human walking is centrally determined, as are the task-dependent differences of its amplitude (e.g., standing versus the stance phase of human walking).  相似文献

Our overall objectives were to examine the role of peripheral afferents from the ankle in modulating stretch reflexes during imposed walking movements and to assess the mechanical consequences of this reflex activity. Specifically we sought to define the changes in the electromyographic (EMG) and mechanical responses to a stretch as a function of the phase of the step cycle. We recorded the ankle position of a normal subject walking on a treadmill at 3 km/h and used a hydraulic actuator to impose the same movements on supine subjects generating a constant level of ankle torque. Small pulse displacements, superimposed on the simulated walking movement, evoked stretch reflexes at different phases of the cycle. Three major findings resulted: 1) soleus reflex EMG responses were influenced strongly by imposed walking movements. The response amplitude was substantially smaller than that observed during steady-state conditions and was modulated throughout the step cycle. This modulation was qualitatively similar to that observed during active walking. Because central factors were held constant during the imposed walking experiments, we conclude that peripheral mechanisms were capable of both reducing the amplitude of the reflex EMG and producing its modulation throughout the movement. 2) Pulse disturbances applied from early to midstance of the imposed walking cycle generated large reflex torques, suggesting that the stretch reflex could help to resist unexpected perturbations during this phase of walking. In contrast, pulses applied during late stance and swing phase generated little reflex torque. 3) Reflex EMG and reflex torque were modulated differently throughout the imposed walking cycle. In fact, at the time when the reflex EMG response was largest, the corresponding reflex torque was negligible. Thus movement not only changes the reflex EMG but greatly modifies the mechanical output that results.  相似文献

Parallel increases in strength and rate of force development (RFD) are well-known outcomes from the initial phase of resistance training. However, it is unknown whether neural adaptations with training contribute to improvements of both factors. The aim of this study was to examine whether changes in H-reflex amplitude with resistance training can explain the gain in strength or rather be associated with RFD. Twelve subjects carried out 3 weeks of isometric maximal plantarflexion training, whereas 12 subjects functioned as contr ols. H-reflexes were elicited in the soleus muscle during rest and sub-maximal contractions at 20 and 60% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). In addition, surface electromyography (sEMG) was recorded from the soleus, gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior muscles during MVC. The resistance training provided increases in maximal force of 18%, RFD of 28% and H-reflex amplitude during voluntary contractions of 17 and 15% while no changes occurred in the control group. In contrast, the maximal M-wave, the maximal H-reflex to maximal M-wave ratio during rest and sEMG during MVC did not change with training. There was a positive correlation between percentage changes in H-reflex amplitude and RFD with training (r = 0.59), while significant association between percentage changes in H-reflex amplitude and maximal force was not found. These findings indicate the occurrence of changed motoneuron excitability or presynaptic inhibition during the initial phase of resistance training. This is the first study to document that increased RFD with resistance training is associated with changes in reflex excitability.  相似文献

Summary The changes in reflex excitability of the motoneurones to the soleus (Sol) muscle occurring during and after voluntary releases of various duration from a constant plantar-torque level in isometric or isotonic conditions have been investigated in normal humans by means of the H-reflex and T-response. The amplitude of both reflexes during the release phase attains values lower than control (obtained in resting conditions) even in the presence of force and EMG activity; the maximal inhibition is reached at the end of the release; the reflexes recover gradually to control values over several seconds. The more abrupt is the release, the more inhibited is the reflex and the shorter is the time to recovery and vv. These results apply both in isometric and isotonic conditions. Activation of the antagonist muscles, sometimes occurring at the end of the fastest release, does not contribute to the H-reflex inhibition. Tonic isometric contractions and relative releases have also been evoked by the tonic vibration reflex (TVR). The H-reflex during the TVR-induced contractions were lower than control values, at variance with those obtained during the voluntary contractions, but their amplitudes during the releases had similar values and time-courses in both conditions, pointing to a common involved inhibitory mechanism. Any voluntary ballistic or ramp contraction taking place after a preceding release, in the period in which the H-reflexes were still inhibited, was not apparently influenced, despite the fact that H-reflexes evoked during the release-conditioned ramp contractions were significantly lower than when evoked during control ramps of similar characteristics. When untrained subjects walk backward on a treadmill the amplitude of the soleus H-reflex in midswing is equal to or exceeds the value in stance. This is a surprising result because during the swing phase of backward walking the soleus is inactive and its antagonist, the tibialis anterior, is active. We suggested that the high amplitude of the soleus H-reflex in late swing reflects task uncertainties, such as estimating the moment of foot contact with the ground and losing balance. In support of this idea we show that when untrained subjects held on to handrails the unexpected high-amplitude H-reflex during midswing was no longer present. We therefore asked whether daily training at this task without grasping the handrails would adaptively modify the H-reflex modulation pattern. In this event, within 10 days of training for 15 min daily, the anticipatory reflex activity at the beginning of training was gradually abated as the subjects reported gaining confidence at the task. However, when adapted subjects were made to walk backward with their eyes shut, the anticipatory reflex activity in midswing returned immediately. The reflex changes as a result of training were not due to changes in the motor activity or kinematics; they are likely part of the motor program controlling backward walking. This adaptive phenomenon may prove to be a useful model for studying the neural mechanisms of motor learning and adaptive plasticity in humans and may be relevant to rehabilitation programs for neurological patients.  相似文献

The behaviour of the soleus H-reflex is considered to be motor task-dependent. However, the speed of movements as well as the motor recruitment level is altered when motor tasks are changed. Therefore it is ambiguous to what extent the motor task-dependent changes found between walking and running, for example, are simply due to changes in these two parameters. The purpose of this study was to investigate how movement speed and motor recruitment level separately influence the soleus H-reflex behaviour when the motor task is unchanged. Soleus H-reflexes were elicited during pedalling at different cadences and crank loads, by which movement speed and muscle recruitment level were modified separately. The H-reflex gain was expressed as the slope of the linear relation between the reflex amplitudes and the background electromyelogram (EMG), and the reflex threshold was expressed by the intercept. The results showed a decrease in reflex gain by 54% ( P =0.001) when the speed of movement was doubled from 40 to 80 rpm (repetitions per minute) without changes in the level of soleus EMG activity. Reflex gain decreased 40% ( P =0.002) when the soleus EMG level was increased by 47% without changing the speed of movement. No significant changes were found in the reflex threshold. We conclude that as speed of movement and motor recruitment level influence the gain of the soleus H-reflex, it is significant that these two parameters are comparable before changes in H-reflexes are stated to be task-dependent.  相似文献

The modulation of the H-reflex in the human soleus muscle under conditions of different length or of background EMG activity was compared in 7 healthy subjects under three conditions: sitting, standing with support, and standing without support. The amplitude of the H-reflex increased when the muscle was shortened in both the sitting and standing conditions. The degree of increase in H-reflex was smaller during standing than sitting for the same change in muscle length. The H-reflex was augmented according to the increase of the background EMG. The "reflex gain", the ratio of the increase in amplitude of the H-reflex to soleus muscle EMG activity, decreased on sitting, standing with support and standing without support, ranked in that order. From these observations, it is concluded that the H-reflex is modulated by both muscle length and the degree of postural stability. The modulation of the reflex could be interpreted in terms of gain compensation and would serve to stabilize posture. A decrease in reflex gain may be appropriate in stabilizing the spinal reflex feedback loop during standing, especially without support.  相似文献

Neural connections between the cervical and lumbosacral spinal cord may assist in arm and leg coordination during locomotion. Currently the extent to which arm activity can modulate reflex excitability of leg muscles is not fully understood. We showed recently that rhythmic arm movement significantly suppresses soleus H-reflex amplitude probably via modification of presynaptic inhibition of the IA afferent pathway. Further, during walking reflexes evoked in leg muscles by stimulation of a cutaneous nerve at the wrist (superficial radial nerve; SR) are phase and task dependent. However, during walking both the arms and legs are rhythmically active thus it is difficult to identify the locus of such modulation. Here we examined the influence of SR nerve stimulation on transmission through the soleus H-reflex pathway in the leg during static contractions and during rhythmic arm movements. Nerve stimulation was delivered with the right shoulder in flexion or extension. H-reflexes were evoked alone (unconditioned) or with cutaneous conditioning via stimulation of the SR nerve (also delivered alone without H-reflex in separate trials). SR nerve stimulation significantly facilitated H-reflex amplitude during static contractions with the arm extended and countered the suppression of reflex amplitude induced by arm cycling. The results demonstrate that cutaneous feedback from the hand on to the soleus H-reflex pathway in the legs is not suppressed during rhythmic arm movement. This contrasts with the observation that rhythmic arm movement suppresses facilitation of soleus H-reflex when cutaneous nerves innervating the leg are stimulated. In conjunction with other data taken during walking, this suggests that the modulation of transmission through pathways from the SR nerve to the lumbosacral spinal cord is partly determined by rhythmic activity of both the arms and legs.  相似文献

This paper addresses two questions associated with the neural mechanisms that might generate this modulation: (1) Does the amplitude of the H-reflex simply rise and fall as a function of the background excitability of the soleus motoneuron pool? (2) Is the modulation of the H-reflex dependent on events associated with activation of the antagonist muscle? The amplitude of the soleus H-reflex was compared under three conditions: natural walking, walking without activating the tibialis anterior muscle, and walking with activation of the soleus muscle in the swing phase. Human subjects were able to perform these three tasks with minimal training. The results indicated that the soleus H-reflex remained very depressed in the swing phase of walking, even when a voluntary contraction of the soleus muscle was superimposed during this time. Moreover, the presence of tibialis anterior activity had a very minor effect on the amplitude of the soleus H-reflex during walking. It is concluded that modulation of the soleus H-reflex is not simply a reflection of the background excitability of the motoneuron pool, and the modulation is not dependent on activation of the antagonist muscle. Other more powerful mechanisms are acting to modulate the reflex, most likely presynaptic inhibition of the primary afferents.  相似文献

Body weight–supported (BWS) robotic-assisted step training on a motorized treadmill is utilized with the aim to improve walking ability in people after damage to the spinal cord. However, the potential for reorganization of the injured human spinal neuronal circuitry with this intervention is not known. The objectives of this study were to determine changes in the soleus H-reflex modulation pattern and activation profiles of leg muscles during stepping after BWS robotic-assisted step training in people with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Fourteen people who had chronic clinically complete, motor complete, and motor incomplete SCI received an average of 45 training sessions, 5 days per week, 1 h per day. The soleus H-reflex was evoked and recorded via conventional methods at similar BWS levels and treadmill speeds before and after training. After BWS robotic-assisted step training, the soleus H-reflex was depressed at late stance, stance-to-swing transition, and swing phase initiation, allowing a smooth transition from stance to swing. The soleus H-reflex remained depressed at early and mid-swing phases of the step cycle promoting a reciprocal activation of ankle flexors and extensors. The spinal reflex circuitry reorganization was, however, more complex, with the soleus H-reflex from the right leg being modulated either in a similar or in an opposite manner to that observed in the left leg at a given phase of the step cycle after training. Last, BWS robotic-assisted step training changed the amplitude and onset of muscle activity during stepping, decreased the step duration, and improved the gait speed. BWS robotic-assisted step training reorganized spinal locomotor neuronal networks promoting a functional amplitude modulation of the soleus H-reflex and thus step progression. These findings support that spinal neuronal networks of persons with clinically complete, motor complete, or motor incomplete SCI have the potential to undergo an endogenous-mediated reorganization, and improve spinal reflex function and walking function with BWS robotic-assisted step training.  相似文献
