The serum activities of the liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, ornithine carbamyl transferase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase were examined in 47 paint industry workers and unexposed age matched referents. The workers were exposed to a mixture of industrial solvents, of which xylene was the main component in most cases. The median total exposure was about 50% of Swedish 1981 threshold limit values according to measurements of individual solvent exposure performed at the same time. No differences in enzyme activities were shown either when the whole exposed and referent groups were compared or when the five workers with outstanding solvent exposures of five times the TLV or more were compared with their referents. It is concluded that in most workers the liver seems to remain largely undamaged from inhalation exposure to a commonly used mixture of non-chlorinated solvents. In many workers this seems to hold true even for high exposures for limited periods. 相似文献

Mortality and cancer incidence among Swedish paint industry workers with long-term exposure to organic solvents 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Cause-specific mortality was studied in a cohort of 416 men who had worked for at least five years in the Swedish paint manufacturing industry during the period 1955-1975. The calculations of expected numbers were based on national, male, calendar-year, and cause-specific death rates for the period 1961-1981. Ninety-six paint industry workers had died, whereas 110 deaths were expected. Three workers had died from multiple myeloma (0.6 expected), and the excess might be related to solvent exposure. Three cleaners had died from infectious urinary tract disease, in comparison to 0.2 deaths expected from all genitourinary diseases, in this small and very heavily exposed group. This association might possibly indicate a modifying effect on the prognosis of urinary tract morbidity from solvents. 相似文献

The paper brings the preliminary results of ambient and biological monitoring of exposure to xylene, toluene, and styrene in paint industry. Air samples were collected at seven stationary locations at work places of 31 male workers. Samples of venous blood were taken from all workers for styrene, toluene, and xylene analysis, and of urine for metabolic derivatives, mandelic, phenylglyoxylic, and o- and m-methylhippuric acids analysis. Blood was collected on Wednesday before and after work, and urine on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday before work and on Wednesday after work. Workers were exposed to moderate concentrations of xylene and low concentrations of toluene and styrene. During periodic medical surveillance Questionnaire 16 was applied as a screening test for early central nervous disturbances. Seven workers had positive findings and required further psychological tests as recommended by WHO. Risk assessment of combined long-term exposure to organic solvents in occupational environment requires a prospective epidemiological study with matched control group. 相似文献

Summary The exposure of workers to methylene chloride and phenol in an aeronautical workshop was measured during stripping of paint from a Boeing B 747. Methylene chloride exposure was measured during two work days by personal air sampling, while area sampling was used for phenol. During paint stripping operations, methylene chloride air concentrations ranged from 299.2 mg/m3 (83.1 ppm) to 1888.9 mg/m3 (524.7 ppm). The exposures to methylene chloride calculated for an 8-h work day ranged from 86 mg/m3 (23.9 ppm) to 1239.5 mg/m3 (344.3 ppm). In another aeronautical workshop, exposure to organic solvents, especially ethylene glycol monoethyl-ether acetate (EGEEA), was controlled during the painting of an Airbus A 320. The external exposure to solvents and EGEEA was measured by means of individual air sampling. The estimation of internal exposure to EGEEA was made by measuring its urinary metabolite, ethoxyacetic acid (EAA). Both measurements were made during the course of 3 days. The biological samples were taken pre-and post-shift. During painting operations, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, n-butyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, n-butyl acetate, ethylbenzene, xylenes and EGEEA were detected in working atmospheres. For these solvents, air concentrations ranged from 0.1 ppm to 69.1 ppm. EGEEA concentrations ranged from 29.2 mg/m3 (5.4 ppm) to 150.1 mg/m3 (27.8 ppm). For biological samples, the average concentrations of EAA were 108.4 mg/g creatinine in pre-shift and 139.4 mg/g creatinine in post-shift samples. Despite the fact that workers wore protective respiratory equipment during paint spraying operations, EEA urinary concentrations are high and suggest that percutaneous uptake is the main route of exposure for EGEEA. The introduction of new paint stripping processes in the aeronautical industry could help to reduce future exposure to methylene chloride. 相似文献

Earlier studies have shown that determination of the serum concentration of different forms of transferrin (isotransferrins) may be used to detect hepatic effects caused by alcohol abuse. The isotransferrin variant with an isoelectric point of 5.7 has been compared with the total amount of serum transferrin in order to study hepatic effects caused by occupational exposure to organic solvents. Eighteen workers from a paint industry were tested before and after their holiday and compared with two different groups, a total of 60 subjects. The solvent workers had significantly higher values both before and after their holiday. This suggests that the effects on the liver caused by organic solvents are similar to those caused by alcohol abuse and that this is a long term effect. The level of exposure to organic solvents was below the Swedish threshold limit values. 相似文献

Exposure to mixtures of solvents among paint workers and biochemical alterations of liver function. 下载免费PDF全文
The objective of this study was to determine biochemical alterations of liver function among paint manufacturers and sprayers associated with exposure to organic solvents. Two paint manufacturing factories and 22 various kinds of spray painting factories (16 car painting, two aircraft painting, three video terminal painting; and one trailer painting) were included. Air concentrations of organic solvents were collected by personal samplers and analysed by gas chromatography. A total of 180 workers were given a comprehensive physical examination, a questionnaire, a liver function test, and a test for hepatitis B surface antigen. The questionnaire contained questions regarding detailed personal medical history, intake of alcohol, and use of medicine. Mixtures of solvents were used throughout the factories, and xylene and toluene were the major components found in almost all air samples with average contents of 46% and 29% on a weight basis of 67 air samples. No strong hepatotoxic solvents were detected. Workers were classified according to the different exposure patterns and different air concentrations of breathing zones as: high (eight hour time weighted average (8 h TWA) hygienic effects of solvents 0.25-9.83, median 1.66), short term high (8 h TWA hygienic effects of solvents 0-3.38, median 0.12), and low (8 h TWA hygienic effects of solvents all below 0.38). After applying a multivariate model to control the non-occupational factors (alcohol, medication, age, and hepatitis B viral infection), increase in gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity was found to be associated with severity of exposure to the mixture of solvents. Because the possible effects on GGT activity of non-occupational factors were controlled for, it is concluded that increased GGT activity among exposed workers may be due to a higher exposure to the mixture of solvents. 相似文献

Objective The objective of this study was to determine to what extent the substitution of solvent-based paint by water-based paint has reduced potential exposure to organic solvents for spray painters in car repair shops. Methods Full-shift personal air sampling (n=79) was carried out over 3 consecutive days in eight car repair shops. Blood samples on the Monday morning (n=26) and at the end of the shift on the Wednesday (n=26), were analysed for organic solvents by headspace techniques. Results Toluene was the organic solvent detected at the highest geometric mean concentration in air samples when solvent-based paint systems were used (0.8 ppm), whereas xylene was found at the highest level when water-based systems were used (0.25 ppm). Toluene, isopropanol, acetone and butyl acetate were detected at higher concentrations when solvent-based paint was used than when water-based paint was employed. The additive factor, based on Norwegian limit values, was three-times higher for the painters using solvent-based paint (0.15) than for those using water-based paint (0.05). On Wednesday after shift the geometric mean of toluene in blood was significantly higher for the painters using solvent-based paint (0.044 g/ml) than for the painters using water-based paint (0.007 g/ml). There was a significant correlation between toluene in personal air samples and toluene in blood samples taken at the end of the shift on the same day. Conclusions When solvent-based paint systems were used the additive factor for organic solvent exposure was three-times higher than when water-based systems were employed. The exposure levels of the organic solvents were well below the Norwegian limit values. The significant correlation between the toluene concentration in air and blood samples indicated that the uptake of organic solvents was correspondingly reduced. At the levels of organic solvents presently described the risk of acute and chronic health effects caused by organic solvents is low. 相似文献

Aim
Organic solvents are widely used in industry. Hepatotoxicity of halogenated hydrocarbons has been confirmed in many studies. However, there are few studies about the association between exposure to aromatic solvents and hepatic toxicity. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of long-term exposure to a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons at above permissible levels on the hepatic system. 相似文献14.
Liver function tests and urinary albumin in house painters with previous heavy exposure to organic solvents. 下载免费PDF全文

The serum activities or concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), bilirubin (BIL), cholic acid (CHOL), chenodeoxycholic acid (CHENO), and transferrin with isoelectric point 5.7, and the urinary excretion of albumin were determined among male current or former house painters (n = 135) and house carpenters (n = 71) who had worked in their trades for at least 10 years before 1970. Workers who showed a value above the 90th percentile among the carpenters in at least one of the tests ASAT, ALAT, GGT, BIL, CHOL, or CHENO were regarded as showing "possible signs of liver dysfunction". Each participant's lifetime solvent exposure was evaluated by interview. The painters were divided into categories with low, intermediate, and heavy cumulative exposure during life (LTSE) or during the most exposed year (MEYSE). All participants stated none or slight recent exposure. The prevalence of possible signs of liver dysfunction increased with solvent exposure category according to LTSE as well as MEYSE with a numerically higher risk estimate in the heavy exposure category for MEYSE than for LTSE. ALP activity increased with exposure category according to both exposure estimates. This increase seemed to be due to an interaction between exposure to solvents and current or previous long term intake of medicines potentially toxic to the liver. None of these results was affected by whether or not the subjects had been exposed to solvents during the year before the investigation. The exposure to solvents was not significantly related to any other outcome variable. It is concluded that long term heavy exposure to solvents may elicit changes in conventional liver function tests indicative of a mild chronic effect on the liver. The findings also suggest that heavy solvent exposure during short time periods is a more likely cause of the findings than lifetime cumulative solvent exposure and that an interaction between solvent exposure and medicines potentially harmful to the liver may be important in the causation of the effects. 相似文献

Summary Thirty-five spraymen, who were varnishing vehicles with alkyd-, phenol- and polyestervarnishes, which were dissolved in solvent mixtures mainly containing o-, m-, p-xylene and ethylbenzene, have been investigated. The concentrations of these solvents in air were 2.1, 7.9, 2.8 and 4.0 ppm on average. The levels of alkylbenzenes in blood and those of their metabolites in urine have been determined. At two of the six working places the spraymen were additionally exposed to n-butanol, respectively 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and several C9-aromatic hydrocarbons. Some of the lacquers contained lead pigments. Alterations of blood cell counts have been observed under the described conditions of exposure. On average the number of lymphocytes was higher than that of segmented granulocytes. Erythrocytes and hemoglobin level of the spraymen were lower than those of the controls. 相似文献

Sleep disturbances and exposure to organic solvents. 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An inquiry about sleep habits and sleep disturbances revealed a significantly higher prevalence of insomnia in a solvent-exposed group than in a comparable group that had no occupational exposure to organic solvents. In the solvent-exposed group was also registered an increased consumption of hypnotics, and a significant increase occurred in the number of individuals who had consulted physicians because of sleep disorders. The results indicate that solvent exposure could induce sleep disturbance. 相似文献

In studies of two workforces 44 men exposed to paint solvents and 52 men working with toluene were compared with age matched comparison groups of non-exposed workers. Scores on a series of performance tests were examined, the solvent exposed in each study functioning less well than their comparison group. The apparent deficit among the paint exposed workers was substantial, but this was reduced after allowance for estimated intellectual capacity. No deficit was apparent on rematching with a second comparison group of more appropriate measured capacity. No evidence was found of impaired nerve conduction in the ulnar or median nerves, and few clinical signs of neurological damage were apparent. Nevertheless, in an associated inquiry of neuropsychological symptoms among 236 painters and 128 non-exposed workers a highly significant excess of symptoms was found among those exposed to paint solvents. 相似文献

Object Ambient air and biological monitoring of an occupational toluene exposure was carried out on a group of 33 workers. Method The biological monitoring of the workers was based on determination of the concentration of toluene in blood and on quantification of the urinary metabolites o-cresol and hippuric acid. All blood and urine samples were collected post-shift. Results The average toluene concentration in the workplace air was 65?ppm, ranging from 13 to 151?ppm. An average concentration of toluene in blood of 911?μg/l was found, corresponding to an average urinary concentration of 2.9?mg/l (2.3?mg/g creatinine) o-cresol and 2.4?g/l (1.9?g/g creatinine) hippuric acid. Both urinary metabolites can be correlated with the concentration of toluene in ambient air and blood, respectively. Conclusions The results of our study indicate that the determination of the urinary o-cresol excretion represents a diagnostically specific and sensitive parameter for the estimation of an individual toluene uptake. In contrast, monitoring of the concentration of hippuric acid in urine cannot be recommended for assessment of individual exposure. To set up a biological tolerance value (BAT) for o-cresol, a urinary concentration of 3?mg/l o-cresol should be in accordance with the current MAK value of 50?ppm toluene. 相似文献

Ambient-air and biological monitoring of occupational xylene exposure were carried out on 2 groups of workers (13 and 10
men, respectively) exposed to a mixture of xylenes during the production of paints or during spraying. Methods: Personal ambient-air monitoring was performed for one complete work shift. Blood and urine samples were collected directly
at the end of the shift. Biological monitoring was based on the determination of the concentration of xylenes in blood and
on the quantification of the sum of the three methylhippuric acids in urine. Results: Average xylene ambient-air concentrations were 29 ppm (production) and 8 ppm (spraying), ranging from 5 to 58 ppm and from
3 to 21 ppm, respectively. The concentrations of xylenes in blood ranged from 63 to 715 μg/l and from 49 to 308 μg/l, with
average values being 380 and 130 μg/l, respectively. Accordingly, the workers engaged in paint production also excreted more
methylhippuric acids in their urine (average 1221 mg/l, range 194–2333 mg/l) than did the sprayers (average 485 mg/l, range
65–1633 mg/l). Discussion: Our results as well as a literature review indicate that occupational xylene exposure on average barely exceeds the threshold
limit value of 100 ppm as proposed by both American and German institutions. Biological monitoring based on the determination
of xylenes in blood and of methylhippuric acids in urine provides sufficient sensitivity and specificity for occupational
health surveillance. The results also confirm the current limit values (BAT values) proposed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
for xylenes in blood (1500 μg/l) and methylhippuric acids in urine (2000 mg/l).
