The nature, rate, and higher-order relationships among facets of racial/ethnic harassment (REH) and discrimination (RED) were examined across five racial/ethnic groups in a sample of 5,000 US military personnel. Using a hierarchical, multigroup confirmatory factor analysis approach, results suggest that the nature of REH and RED do not differ by race, with behavioral items equally representing REH and RED across the different groups. Further, higher-order relationships among the facets of REH and RED do not vary across race, with a single second-order factor accounting for the relationships. This single factor is theorized to represent a root intergroup prejudice that leads to harassment and discrimination. However, as anticipated, individuals from minority groups generally reported higher levels of REH and RED once measurement equivalence has been established. Together, the results suggest that both intergroup prejudice (which is multidirectional) and racism (which originates in powerful groups against other groups) are operating in REH and RED experiences.  相似文献

Objective

In June 2006, the first vaccine for HPV was approved by the FDA and media coverage about the topic increased significantly. This study sought to explore the nature of the coverage and whether knowledge about HPV was affected by it.

Methods

A content analysis, including 321 news stories from major newspapers, the AP wire and television news networks was conducted. A monthly RDD-recruited Internet survey with a national sample (n = 3323) was used to assess changes in population knowledge.

Results

Twenty-three percent of stories did not mention the sexually transmitted nature of the disease and 80% left out information about the need for continued cervical cancer screening after vaccination. Exposure to health-related media content was significantly associated with knowledge about HPV, even controlling for baseline knowledge (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.12–2.35).

Conclusions

Changes in the volume of coverage over time were associated with knowledge about HPV, but the content analysis reveals that many of the stories were missing important information.

Practice implications

Clinicians must consider the potential media source patients are using for HPV-related information in order to correct inaccurate or incomplete information that could affect health behavior.  相似文献

Intense search has been going on to find factors responsible for the asthma and atopy epidemic in Western societies. Attention has increasingly been devoted to environmental saprophytes, which, in addition to gut commensals, might be the major players in the development and fine tuning of immunologic homeostasis. This review outlines current evidence for the role of environmental saprophytes in the development of atopic disease and considers the consequences of urbanization in reducing contacts with soil microorganisms. The major microbial components that have been shown to possess immunomodulatory capacity and their respective Toll-like receptors are also discussed, as are the possible mechanisms underlying the ability of saprophytes to confer protection against atopic disease.  相似文献

The alpha 7 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) is expressed in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), a brain region where these receptors are implicated in cognitive function and in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Activation of this receptor is dependent on release of acetylcholine (ACh) from axon terminals that contain the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT). Since rat and mouse models are widely used for studies of specific abnormalities in schizophrenia, we sought to determine the subcellular location of the α7nAChR with respect to VAChT storage vesicles in axon terminals in the PFC in both species. For this, we used dual electron microscopic immunogold and immunoperoxidase labeling of antisera raised against the α7nAChR and VAChT. In both species, the α7nAChR-immunoreactivity (ir) was principally identified within dendrites and dendritic spines, receptive to axon terminals forming asymmetric excitatory-type synapses, but lacking detectable α7nAChR or VAChT-ir. Quantitative analysis of the rat PFC revealed that of α7nAChR-labeled neuronal profiles, 65% (299/463) were postsynaptic structures (dendrites and dendritic spine) and only 22% (104/463) were axon terminals or small unmyelinated axons. In contrast, VAChT was principally localized to varicose vesicle-filled axonal profiles, without recognized synaptic specializations (n=240). Of the α7nAChR-labeled axons, 47% (37/79) also contained VAChT, suggesting that ACh release is autoregulated through the presynaptic α7nAChR. The VAChT-labeled terminals rarely formed synapses, but frequently apposed α7nAChR-containing neuronal profiles. These results suggest that in rodent PFC, the α7nAChR plays a major role in modulation of the postsynaptic excitation in spiny dendrites in contact with VAChT containing axons.  相似文献

In order to investigate the neural processes underlying figure-ground segregation on the basis of motion, we studied the responses of neurones in the second visual area (V2) of marmoset monkeys to stimuli that moved against dynamic textured backgrounds. The stimuli were either solid bars, which were uniformly darker or lighter than the backgrounds average, or kinetic (camouflaged) bars, formed by textural elements that matched the spatial and temporal modulation of the background. Camouflaged bars were rendered visible only by the coherent motion of their textural elements. Using solid bars, we subdivided the population of marmoset V2 neurones into motion-selective (uni- and bi-directional units, 73.3% of the sample) and weakly-biased (26.7%) subpopulations. The motion selective subpopulation was further subdivided into cue-invariant neurones (units which demonstrated a similar selectivity for the direction of motion of the solid and camouflaged bars) and non-cue-invariant neurones (units which showed selectivity to the direction of motion of solid bars, but had weak or pandirectional responses to camouflaged bars). Cells with cue-invariant responses to these stimuli were as common in V2 as in the primary visual area (V1; approximately 40% of the population). In V2, neurones with cue-invariant and non-cue-invariant motion selectivity formed distinct populations in terms of classical response properties: cue-invariant neurones were characterized by a sharp axis of motion selectivity and extensive length summation, while the majority of non-cue-invariant neurones had broader motion selectivity and were end-stopped. In the light of previous studies, these different constellations of classical response properties suggest a correlation with more traditionally recognized categories of V2 units and modular compartments. The responses of V2 cells to kinetic stimuli were slightly delayed relative to their responses to luminance-defined stimuli.  相似文献

Current developments in experimental chemotherapy of Chagas’ disease are reviewed, in particular the demonstration that fourth-generation azole derivatives (inhibitors of sterol C14α demethylase), with particular selectivity against Trypanosoma cruzi and special pharmacokinetic properties, are capable of inducing radical parasitological cures in murine models of both acute and chronic disease. These are the first reports of parasitological cure of this disease in its chronic phase. We also discuss the relevance of etiological treatment in the clinical outcome of patients with chronic Chagas’ disease. Although previous studies have suggested an important autoimmune component in the pathogenesis of this disease, recent results obtained using highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction based detection methods and detailed immunological characterization of the inflammatory process associated with chagasic cardiomyopathy indicate a positive correlation between tissue parasitism and the severity of cardiac pathological findings. Effective antiparasitic treatment can lead to regression of the inflammatory heart lesions and fibrosis in experimental animals and to stop the progression of the disease in humans. Taken together, these findings support the notion that the presence of the parasite is a necessary and sufficient condition for chagasic cardiomyopathy and confirm the importance of specific etiological treatment in the management of chronic chagasic patients. Objective

Patients access on-line health information (OHI) to better understand their health. We aimed to determine which demographic factors influence OHI use. We also explored how OHI is used and subsequent implications to the patient–doctor relationship.

Methods

We distributed a self-administered questionnaire to 202 haematology out-patients.

Results

62.3% used the internet and 54.3% used OHI. Higher education, (P < 0.001, OR 34.62, 95% CI 5.20–230.66) and household incomes of £15 000–25 000 (P = 0.023 OR 4.8 95% CI 1.236–18.59) were positively associated with OHI use.Those reassured after reading OHI had improved trust in their specialist (P < 0.001, OR 52.1, 95% CI 12.3–221.1), improved confidence during consultations, (P < 0.001, OR 23.0, 95% CI 2.8–188.2) and were improved decisions makers (P = 0.008, OR 13.6, 95% CI 4.1–45.7). Those with increased trust in their haematologist also had improved confidence (P < 0.001, OR 6.2, 95% CI 2.2–17.3) and improved decision making ability (P < 0.001, OR 13.6, 95% CI 4.7–39.4). 74.6% of patients did not share OHI with their haematologist.

Conclusions

Two-thirds of participants were exposed directly or indirectly to OHI. OHI affects patients’ view of their health and influences behaviour during consultations.

Practice implications

Haematologists could facilitate patients using OHI by recommending high quality websites and act supportively when patients share OHI.  相似文献

The recent expansion of Nicotine Replacement Therapy to pregnant women and children ignores the fact that nicotine impairs, disrupts, duplicates and/or interacts with essential physiological functions and is involved in tobacco-related carcinogenesis. The main concerns in the present context are its fetotoxicity and neuroteratogenicity that can cause cognitive, affective and behavioral disorders in children born to mothers exposed to nicotine during pregnancy, and the detrimental effects of nicotine on the growing organism. Hence, the use of nicotine, whose efficacy in treating nicotine addiction is controversial even in adults, must be strictly avoided in pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood and adolescence.  相似文献
