Samuel Preston Moore was trained as a military surgeon in the US Army but resigned his commission and was appointed Surgeon-General of the Confederate States Army Medical Department at the beginning of the American Civil War. He reformed the mediocre medical corps by raising recruiting standards and improving treatment protocols and by placing the most capable surgeons in positions of authority. He improved the ambulance corps and directed the construction of many new hospitals for Confederate casualties. He was directly responsible for the barracks hospital design, which is still used today. He established the Confederate States Medical and Surgical Journal and directed a successful effort to develop substitutes for scarce pharmaceuticals from the indigenous flora of the South. He founded the Association of Army and Navy Surgeons of the Confederate States of America. With skill and dedication, Dr. Moore transformed the medical corps into one of the most effective departments of the Confederate military and was responsible for saving thousands of lives on the battlefield.  相似文献

Samuel David Gross (1805-1884) represented the most notable surgeon of his generation and was honored with the title of "The Nestor of American Surgeon" by surgeon biographer Isaac Minis Hays. Of Pennsylvania Dutch stock, he was born on the family farm near Easton, Pennsylvania. He attended Wilkebarré Academy and Lawrenceville High School, noted private institutions of the day. He apprenticed under Doctor Joseph K. Swift of Easton and later with Professor George McClellan while in Philadelphia. In 1828, he graduated from Jefferson Medical College and remained for a short time in Philadelphia. Professor Gross focused his professional pursuits in the cities of Easton (1830-1833), Cincinnati (1833-1840), Louisville (1840-1856), and Philadelphia (1856-1882). He retired from Jefferson Medical College two years before his death in 1884.Samuel D. Gross' contributions to surgery were numerous and diverse. He was recognized as a prolific author of classic texts of pathology, surgery, and history, an educator, a leader, a surgical researcher, and a pioneer surgeon practitioner. His influence in national affairs was immense, and his recognition as a respected surgeon was unmatched. He remains the most distinguished surgeon of his times. History values him as a hard working, honest, highly competent, and committed individual. His capacity for work and his dedication to a single cause were unrivaled. Doctor Gross integrated the best that surgery could give to future generations of surgical professionals.  相似文献

A rare case of true aneurysm of the profunda femoris artery (PFA) is reported. Surgical management consisted of ligation of the aneurysm and decompression of the sac. Presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of true PFA aneurysms are discussed and the English language literature is comprehensively reviewed.  相似文献

When one considers the circumstances of his birth, the barriers that he had to overcome, and his abbreviated life span (<46 years), a strong case can be made that Charles Drew, MD, CM, MDSc, was one of the most accomplished surgeons of the 20th Century; yet many practitioners and instructors of the surgical sciences know little or nothing about him. There are others who have heard of him and still harbor popular misconceptions about the circumstances of his death that have been perpetuated by several media outlets. The Southern Surgical Association promotes a substantially more inclusive brand of surgical fellowship than it did during the lifetime of Dr. Drew. We believe that the membership would greatly appreciate knowing some of the details of Dr. Drew's life, particularly his major scientific contributions and his commitment to excellence in patient care, and in the training of young surgeons.  相似文献
