[Purpose] This study investigated the effect of hip position on muscle onset time during prone hip extension with knee flexion. [Subjects] The study included 21 healthy male volunteers. [Methods] Muscle onset times of the right gluteus maximus, right hamstrings, bilateral lumbar erector spinae, and bilateral lumbar multifidus were measured using surface electromyography during right hip extension with knee flexion in the prone position. Measurements were made with the hip in 3 positions: (1) neutral, (2) abduction, and (3) abduction and external rotation. [Results] Gluteus maximus onset relative to the hamstrings was significantly earlier with hip abduction and with hip abduction and external rotation compared with that with the hip in the neutral position. Gluteus maximus onset relative to the hamstrings was significantly earlier with hip abduction and external rotation compared with that with hip abduction. The bilateral multifidus and left lumbar erector spinae onset times relative to the hamstrings were significantly earlier with hip abduction and external rotation compared with those with hip abduction and with the hip in the neutral position. [Conclusion] Abduction and external rotation of the hip during prone hip extension with knee flexion is effective for advancing the onset times of the gluteus maximus, bilateral multifidus, and contralateral lumbar erector spinae.Key words: Prone hip extension with knee flexion, Hip joint position, Muscle onset time  相似文献

[Purpose] The present study examined the effects of knee flexion angle on hip extensor muscle activity. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty healthy subjects maintained knee flexion angles of 0°, 30°, 60°, 90° and 110° in the prone position and performed maximal voluntary contraction in hip extension. Maximum torque in hip extension at the different angles was measured, and surface electromyogram activities of the gluteus maximus (GM), biceps femoris (BF) and semitendinosus (ST) were recorded and normalized by the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). [Results] The maximum torque of the hip extensor showed significant decreases between 0°and 60°, 90° and 110° of knee flexion. The muscle activity of BF was significantly high at 0°, and GM showed a significantly higher activity than both BF and ST at 60°, 90°and 110° of knee flexion. [Conclusion] The maximum torque in hip extension and muscle activities of BF and ST were significantly high at 0° but they decreased at knee flexion angles of more than 60°. Therefore, we consider that more than 60° of knee joint flexion is required to increase GM activity, and to reduce the muscle activities of BF and ST.Key words: Gluteus maximus, Hamstring muscle, Prone hip extension  相似文献

[Purpose] This study aimed to identify correlations among pelvic positions and differences in lower extremity joint angles during walking in female university students. [Subjects] Thirty female university students were enrolled and their pelvic positions and differences in lower extremity joint angles were measured. [Methods] Pelvic position, pelvic torsion, and pelvic rotation were assessed using the BackMapper. In addition, motion analysis was performed to derive differences between left and right flexion, abduction, and external rotation ranges of hip joints; flexion, abduction, and external rotation ranges of knee joints; and dorsiflexion, inversion, and abduction ranges of ankle joints, according to X, Y, and Z-axes. [Results] Pelvic position was found to be positively correlated with differences between left and right hip flexion (r=0.51), hip abduction (r=0.62), knee flexion (r=0.45), knee abduction (r=0.42), and ankle inversion (r=0.38). In addition, the difference between left and right hip abduction showed a positive correlation with difference between left and right ankle dorsiflexion (r=0.64). Moreover, differences between left and right knee flexion exhibited positive correlations with differences between left and right knee abduction (r=0.41) and ankle inversion (r=0.45). [Conclusion] Bilateral pelvic tilt angles are important as they lead to bilateral differences in lower extremity joint angles during walking.Key words: Pelvic position, Lower extremity joint angle, Walking  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the flexion angle of the knee joint and the abduction angle of the hip joint on the activation of the cervical region and abdominal muscles. [Subjects] A total of 42 subjects were enrolled 9 males and 33 females. [Methods] The bridging exercise in this study was one form of exercise with a knee joint flexion angle of 90°. Based on this, a bridging exercise was conducted at the postures of abduction of the lower extremities at 0, 5, 10, and 15°. [Result] The changes in the knee joint angle and the hip abduction angle exhibited statistically significant effects on the cervical erector spinae, adductor magnus, and gluteus medius muscles. The abduction angles did not result in statistically significant effects on the upper trapezium, erector spinae, external oblique, and rectus abdominis muscles. However, in relation to the knee joint angles, during the bridging exercise, statistically significant results were exhibited. [Conclusion] When patients with both cervical and back pain do a bridging exercise, widening the knee joint angle would reduce cervical and shoulder muscle activity through minimal levels of abduction, permitting trunk muscle strengthening with reduced cervical muscle activity. [Purpose] This study aimed to determine the effect of varying hip flexion angle on hip muscle activity during isometric contraction in abduction. [Subjects] Twenty-seven healthy men (mean age=21.5 years, SD=1.2) participated in this study. [Methods] Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded of the upper portion of the gluteus maximus (UGM), lower portion of the gluteus maximus (LGM), tensor fasciae latae (TFL), and gluteus medius (GMed) during isometric contraction under two measurement conditions: hip flexion angle (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 degrees) and abduction of the hip joint at 20, 40, 60, and 80% maximum strength. Integrated EMG (IEMG) were calculated and normalized to the value of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). [Results] Results indicated that the IEMG of both the UGM and LGM increased significantly with increases in hip flexion angle, whereas the IEMG of the TFL decreased significantly. The maximum activities of the UGM and the LGM were 85.7 ± 80.8%MVC and 38.2 ± 32.9%MVC at 80 degrees of hip flexion, respectively, and that of the TFL was 71.0 ± 39.0%MVC at 40 degrees of hip flexion. [Conclusion] The IEMG of the GMed did not change with increases in hip flexion angle. [Purpose] The aim of this study was to identify the effects of initial position of the hip joint with changes in the hip joint angle on the respective muscle activities of the bilateral erector spinae (ES), unilateral gluteus maximus (GM), and biceps femoris (BF) and the amount of pelvic anterior tilt during prone hip extension (PHE). [Subjects] Fifteen healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. [Methods] The subjects performed PHE in three positions: neutral, 20°, and 45° flexed hip joint. The activities of the ES, GM, and BF were measured using surface electromyography, and kinematic values for pelvic anterior tilt were calculated using a motion capture system. [Results] There was a significant decrease in muscle activity of the contralateral ES at 45°, and an increase in the GM muscle activity and decrease in the BF muscle activity at 20°. The amount of pelvic anterior tilt was lower at 20°. [Conclusion] These results suggest that a hip flexion position of 20° would have an advantage over the other measured positions.Key words: Electromyography, Joint position, Prone hip extension  相似文献

[Purpose] We investigated the effects of shoulder flexion loaded by an elastic tubing band during squat exercises, by assessing electromyographic activities of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius. [Subjects] In total, 17 healthy males were recruited. [Methods] Participants performed squat exercises with and without shoulder flexion loaded by a tubing band. Gluteal muscle activities during the downward and upward phases of the squat exercises were recorded using a surface electromyography (EMG) system. The mean electromyographic activities of the gluteal muscles during squat exercises with and without loaded shoulder flexion were compared using the paired t-test. [Results] Electromyographic activities of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius were greater in both the upward and downward phases of the squat with loaded shoulder flexion. [Conclusions] The combination of squat and loaded shoulder flexion can be an effective exercise for increasing gluteal muscle activity.Key words: Squat exercise, Gluteus maximus, Gluteus medius  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the potential effects of resistance exercise according to the positions of the arms and the rotation of the humerus on the subhumeral acromial space. [Subjects] The study subjects were 34 subjects without shoulder pain. [Methods] Ultrasonographic measurements of the acromiohumeral distance of the subjects were made at three shoulder positions: 90° flexion, scaption at 90° abduction, and 90° abduction in an upright sitting position. The subjects were instructed to vertically push against a table to the maximum level with the humerus in internal, neutral, and external rotation. The measurements were made three times in each position. [Results] There was a significant difference in acromiohuneral distance between neutral and internal rotation of the humerus, and between external rotation and internal rotation of the humerus. In the scaption position, there was a significant difference between neutral and internal rotation of the humerus, and between external rotation and internal rotation of the humerus. In the 90° flexion position, there was a significant difference between neutral and internal rotation, and between neutral and external rotation. There was a significant difference between the flexion position and the abduction position, and between the flexion position and the scaption position. In terms of the internal rotation of the humerus, there was a significant difference between 90° flexion and 90° abduction. [Conclusion] These findings can be applied in exercises prescribed to increase the acromiohumeral distance and to aid the treatment and evaluation of shoulder dysfunctions.Key words: Ultrasonographic, Acromiohumeral distance, Humeral rotation  相似文献

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to elucidate the difference in hip external and internal rotation ranges of motion (ROM) between the prone and sitting positions. [Subjects] The subjects included 151 students. [Methods] Hip rotational ROM was measured with the subjects in the prone and sitting positions. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze ipsilateral hip rotation ROM in the prone and sitting positions in males and females. The total ipsilateral hip rotation ROM was calculated by adding the measured values for external and internal rotations. [Results] Ipsilateral hip rotation ROM revealed significant differences between two positions for both left and right internal and external rotations. Hip rotation ROM was significantly higher in the prone position than in the sitting position. Hip rotation ROM significantly differed between the men and women. Hip external rotation ROM was significantly higher in both positions in men; conversely, hip internal rotation ROM was significantly higher in both positions in women. [Conclusion] Hip rotation ROM significantly differed between the sexes and between the sitting and prone positions. Total ipsilateral hip rotation ROM, total angle of external rotation, and total angle of internal rotation of the left and right hips greatly varied, suggesting that hip joint rotational ROM is widely distributed.Key words: Hip rotation, ROM, Positions  相似文献

BackgroundImproving activity and strength of the gluteus medius muscle is a common goal among clinicians aiming to rehabilitate lower extremity and low back injuries. The functional anatomy of the hip is complex, particularly how position-dependent the activity and strength of many muscles surrounding the hip are, and the optimal exercise technique to isolate gluteus medius remains controversial. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of altering hip orientation during side-lying clamshell and hip abduction exercises on the relative muscle activation profiles of gluteus medius and tensor fascae latae.MethodsThe ratio of gluteus-medius-to-tensor-fascae-latae peak electromyography signal amplitude of 13 healthy, male participants was compared across variations of the clamshell and abduction exercises. The hip flexion angle was varied from 30°, 45°, and 60° for the clamshell, while hip rotation orientation was varied from internal, neutral, and external rotation for the abduction exercise.FindingsVarying hip angle – flexion in the clamshell exercise and internal/external rotation in the abduction exercise – did not significantly affect the interplay between gluteus medius and tensor fascae latae activation levels. Both exercises remained gluteus medius-dominant across all variations, but the gluteus-medius-to-tensor-fascae-latae ratio was far greater for the clamshell than for the abduction exercise; the clamshell may be the preferred rehabilitative exercise to prescribe when minimal tensor fascae latae muscle activation is desired by the clinician.InterpretationThese findings provide information for clinical decision-making pertaining to effective gluteus medius activation in lower extremity and low back exercise rehabilitation programs.  相似文献

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the differences in scapular movement during flexion and abduction of the shoulder joint with different postures. [Participants and Methods] This study included 15 male participants. Their shoulder flexion and abduction and angles of the scapular upward rotation, scapular anterior tilt, scapular external rotation, and thoracic spine flexion were measured. Measurements were taken in three positions: the control, thoracic spine flexion, and thoracic spine extension positions using a three-dimensional motion capture system. [Results] In the shoulder flexion, the amount of change in the scapular external rotation was significantly greater in the thoracic flexion than in the thoracic extension. In shoulder abduction, the amount of change in the scapular anterior tilt and external rotation was significantly greater in the thoracic flexion than in the thoracic extension. A comparison of the scapular angles in shoulder flexion and abduction showed that the upward rotation, posterior tilt, and external rotation were significantly greater in abduction than flexion. [Conclusion] To avoid posture-induced incoordination of the scapula and thorax movement during shoulder elevation, postural adjustment of the thoracic spine based on the movements is necessary for the shoulder joint exercises.  相似文献

Background

Hip muscle dysfunction may be associated with knee valgus that contributes to problems like patellofemoral pain syndrome. The purpose of this study was to (1) compare knee and hip kinematics and hip muscle strength and recruitment between “good” and “poor” performers on a single-leg squat test developed to assess hip muscle dysfunction and (2) examine relationships between hip muscle strength, recruitment and frontal plane knee kinematics to see which variables correlated with knee valgus during the test.

Methods

Forty-one active women classified via visual rating as “good” or “poor” performers on the test participated. Participants completed 5-repetition single-leg squat tests. Isometric hip extension and abduction strength, gluteus maximus and gluteus medius recruitment, and 3-dimensional hip and knee kinematics during the test were compared between groups and examined for their association with frontal plane knee motion.

Findings

“Poor” performers completed the test with more hip adduction (mean difference = 7.6°) and flexion (mean difference = 6.3°) than “good” performers. No differences in knee kinematics, hip strength or hip muscle recruitment occurred. However, the secondary findings indicated that increased medial hip rotation (partial r = 0.94) and adduction (partial r = 0.42) and decreased gluteus maximus recruitment (partial r = 0.35) correlated with increased knee valgus.

Interpretation

Whereas hip muscle function and knee kinematics did not differ between groups as we'd hypothesized, frontal plane knee motion correlated with transverse and frontal plane hip motions and with gluteus maximus recruitment. Gluteus maximus recruitment may modulate frontal plane knee kinematics during single-leg squats.  相似文献

[Purpose] This study compared the activities of the abdominal and hip extensor muscles between the bridging exercise (BE) and bridging exercise with hip adduction (BEHA) positions in women using electromyography (EMG). [Subjects] We recruited 14 healthy adult females with no history of low back pain. [Methods] The subjects performed bridging exercises with and without hip adduction. The EMG activities of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and gluteus maximus (GM) muscles were recorded. [Result] The EMG activities of all muscles were significantly increased during the BEHA compared to the BE. [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM), measured using a pressure bio-feedback unit, on the activities of the hamstring, gluteus maximus, and erector spinae muscles during prone hip extension. [Subjects and Methods] Thirty healthy adult subjects (14 male, 16 female), were recruited. Subjects’ lumbar lordosis and pelvic tilt angles were measured, and based on the results, the subjects were divided into two groups: a hyperlordotic lumbar angle (HLLA) group (n=15) and a normal lordotic lumbar angle (NLLA) group (n=15). The muscle activities of the hamstring and gluteus maximus, and of the erector spinae on the right side of the body, were recorded using surface electromyography. [Results] When performing ADIM with prone hip extension, the muscle activity of the gluteus maximus of the HLLA group significantly improved compared with that the NLLA group. [Conclusion] This study demonstrated that ADIM with prone hip extension was more effective at eliciting gluteus maximus activity in the HLLA group than in the NLLA group. [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the activation of the gluteus medius (Gmed), rectus femoris (RF), and biceps femoris (BF) muscles during neutral (N) sit to stand (STS) and STS involving hip abduction (ABD) in elderly females. [Subjects] We recruited 16 healthy elderly females with no pain in the knee joint or any other orthopedic problems of the lower limbs. [Methods] The activities of the dominant lower extremity muscles were measured using a wireless electromyography (EMG) system. Subjects then undertook a total of six STS trials: three for neutral STS and three for STS involving hip abduction. [Results] In the pre-TO phase, activation of the RF muscle was significantly increased during hip ABD. In the post-TO phase during hip ABD, Gmed muscle activation was significantly increased, and RF muscle activation was significantly decreased. [Purpose] This study compared the isolated contraction ratios of the hip extensors, erector spinae muscles of the lumbar region, and thoracic muscles during different back extension exercises. [Subjects] Twelve males participated in this study. [Methods] The subjects performed various back extension exercises. The activities of the T7 erector spinae muscles, L3 erector spinae muscles, and the gluteus maximus were measured, and the isolation contraction ratios were calculated. [Results] The isolated contraction ratio of the T7 erector spinae muscles significantly increased during exercise 2. The isolated contraction ratio of the gluteus maximus increased by a significant degree during exercise 1 compared with the other exercises. [Purpose] This study examined the correlation between the muscle activities and joint angle of the hip and knee according to the changes in stance width during a lifting task. [Subjects and Methods] The subjects of this study were 15 healthy students. A three-dimensional motion analyzer (SMART-E, BTS, Italy) was used to measure the joint angles of hip and knee during lifting. An 8-channel electromyograph (8-EMG) (Pocket EMG, BTS, Italy) was used to measure muscle activities of the erector spinae, gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, and tibialis anterior during lifting. The collected data were analyzed using the Pearson-test and SPSS 18.0. [Result] The muscle activity of the tibialis anterior was significantly decreased by increasing the stance width (r= −0.285). Muscle activity of the erector spinae was significantly decreased by increasing the knee angle (r= −0.444). The muscle activity of the gluteus maximus was significantly increased by increasing the muscle activity of the tibialis anterior (r= 0.295). [Conclusion] Efficient lifting is possible when stance width and knee flexion are increased, which results in reduced muscle activity of the tibialis anterior and the erector spinae. OBJECTIVE: We measured the surface electromyographic activities of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis in 16 subjects with patellofemoral joint pain syndrome. DESIGN: Each subject performed bilateral static knee extension exercises at 60% of his or her maximal voluntary effort under different combinations of hip rotation (30 degrees of medial rotation, neutral, 45 degrees of lateral rotation) and knee flexion (20 and 40 degrees) in a standing position. The ratio of surface-integrated electromyographic signals of vastus medialis obliquus over vastus lateralis was calculated for each of the six conditions. Because of significant interaction of hip rotation and knee flexion in the two-way analysis of variance, data were analyzed separately with paired t tests for the effect of knee positions and one-way repeated measures analysis of variance for hip positions. RESULTS: At 20 degrees of knee flexion, there was no significant difference among the three hip positions, whereas at 40 degrees of knee flexion, medial rotation of the hip resulted in significantly higher vastus medialis obliquus over vastus lateralis activity ratio than lateral rotation (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There was relatively more activation of vastus medialis obliquus than vastus lateralis at 40 degrees of semisquat with the hip medially rotated by 30 degrees. This finding has clinical implications for training the vastus medialis obliquus in patients with patellofemoral joint pain syndrome.  相似文献
