Aim: Although impaired verbal memory and verbal fluency are frequently found in adults with schizophrenia, there has been a paucity of studies investigating adolescents with schizophrenia. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the main subcomponents of verbal memory and verbal fluency in adolescents with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Methods: Verbal learning and memory and verbal fluency was assessed in 21 adolescents with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (mean age, 15.4 years) compared with 28 healthy adolescents (mean age, 15.1 years). Results: The patient group performed significantly below healthy controls on measures of learning, delayed recall and on a frequency estimation task. No differences between the groups were found for measures of recognition, retention, implicit memory, or susceptibility to interference. Although they had impaired delayed recall the patients remembered most of what they actually learned. The patient group was impaired on phonological and semantic fluency, but there were no differences between the groups with respect to clustering or switching on the fluency tasks, when controlling for total output. There was no disproportionate impairment in semantic, as compared to phonological fluency, in the patient group. Conclusions: Adolescents with schizophrenia spectrum disorders exhibit impairments in verbal learning and verbal fluency, which might have an impact on the individual's everyday functioning.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the cognitive functions of patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3(SCA3). We examined 15 patients with genetically confirmed SCA3 and 15 healthy control subjects matched for age, years of education, and intellectual ability. We administered verbal memory (word recall and word recognition) and executive function tasks (word fluency test, forward and backward digit and visual span tests, Kana Pick-out Test, Trail Making Test, and conflicting instructions and a Go/NoGo task from the Frontal Assessment Battery). We found that patients with SCA3 had significantly lower scores than the healthy control subjects on the word recall, semantic, and letter fluency, and backward digit span tests, while word recognition was well preserved. The other executive function tests showed preserved functions in the SCA3 group, indicating that visual working memory, and attention and inhibition control were not affected. The patients with SCA3 showed impaired word recall and intact word recognition, and accordingly, episodic memory encoding and storage processes in short-term memory were preserved. In category and letter-fluency tests, impairment was attributable to word-retrieval from semantic memory. Impaired verbal working memory may be involved in the retrieval of verbal information from phonological storage by means of continuous subvocal rehearsal, rather than a deficit in initial phonological encoding. Essential executive dysfunction in patients with SCA3 may be due to damage in the cerebellar cortex–ventral dentate nucleus–thalamus–prefrontal cortex circuits, which are involved in strategic retrieval of verbal information from different modes of memory storage.  相似文献

Performance on three verbal measures (story recall, paired associated learning, category fluency) designed to assess the integration of long-term semantic and linguistic knowledge, phonological working memory and executive resources within the proposed ‘episodic buffer’ of working memory (Baddeley, 2007) was assessed in children with intellectual disabilities (ID). It was hypothesised that children with ID would show equivalent performance to typically developing children of the same mental age. This prediction was based on the hypothesis that, despite poorer phonological short-term memory than mental age matched peers, those with ID may benefit from more elaborate long-term memory representations, because of greater life experience. Children with ID were as able as mental age matched peers to remember stories, associate pairs of words together and generate appropriate items in a category fluency task. Performance did not, however, reach chronological age level on any of the tasks. The results suggest children with ID perform at mental age level on verbal ‘episodic buffer’ tasks, which require integration of information from difference sources, supporting a ‘delayed’ rather than ‘different’ view of their development.  相似文献

BackgroundStudies with children exposed to methylmercury (MeHg) through fish consumption in the Brazilian Amazon region report that the high levels of hair Hg are associated with significant decreases in intelligence, memory, attention, and visuospatial processing.ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between mercury exposure and neuropsychological functions in riverside communities of the Brazilian Amazon.Method263 participants aged 6 to 14 years old were assessed, from resettlement regions, near the Madeira river, Rondônia, Brazil. To assess the neuropsychological functions we used the following instruments: intelligence (WASI), working memory (Corsi Block-Tapping Task and Digit Span), verbal fluency (Word Generation - NEPSY II), inhibitory control (Inhibition Errors - NEPSY II), shifting (Trail Making Test) and manual motor dexterity (Grooved PegBoard Test). Socioeconomic status was obtained through household surveys. Total Hg levels were quantified hair samples (Total HgH) collected from the occipital region of the scalp and analyzed by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry.ResultsThe group in the upper quartile of Total HgH levels presented lower scores on the tasks that assessed estimated IQ, visuospatial working memory, semantic knowledge and phonological verbal fluency, when compared to the group in the lower quartile level. A regression analysis controlled for age, sex, and maternal education showed that for each increase of 10 μg/g of Total HgH, there was a decrease around half standard deviation in Verbal IQ, estimated IQ scores, semantic knowledge, phonological verbal fluency and for verbal and visuospatial working memory.ConclusionsHigh concentrations of Total Hg in hair were associated with a lower performance in neuropsychological functions tests. The results show that environmental exposure to Hg is associated to children and adolescents’ lower neuropsychological performance in the riverine and resettled areas of the Brazilian Amazon region.  相似文献

Increasingly, children with Down syndrome receive literacy instruction with the expectation of acquiring functional reading skills. Unfortunately, little is known about the processes underlying literacy skills in this special population. Phonological awareness contributes to literacy development in typically developing children, however, there is inconclusive evidence about these skills in younger children with Down syndrome. 9 children with Down syndrome (5.6-8.10 years) participated in this investigation. Due to the paucity of standardised phonological awareness measures for children with special needs, in particular children with Down syndrome, a variety of tasks were adapted from the literature. The assessment battery examined the skills of phonological awareness, literacy, speech production, expressive language, hearing acuity, speech perception, and auditory-visual memory. The results suggest that children with Down syndrome are at risks for reading acquisition difficulties due to reduced phonological awareness skills. These deficits are in addition to delays caused by reduced cognitive skills. Only one of the participants was able to demonstrate rhyme awareness, which may have been due to task effects. Written word recognition ability was correlated with tests of phonemic awareness, and error analysis of the spelling and non-word reading tasks suggested grapheme-phoneme connections deficits. Further research is needed to determine the best methods of assessment and intervention for phonological awareness in children with Down syndrome.  相似文献

Semantic verbal fluency tasks are commonly used in neuropsychological assessment. Investigations of the influence of level of literacy have not yielded consistent results in the literature. This prompted us to investigate the ecological relevance of task specifics, in particular, the choice of semantic criteria used. Two groups of literate and illiterate subjects were compared on two verbal fluency tasks using different semantic criteria. The performance on a food criterion (supermarket fluency task), considered more ecologically relevant for the two literacy groups, and an animal criterion (animal fluency task) were compared. The data were analysed using both quantitative and qualitative measures. The quantitative analysis indicated that the two literacy groups performed equally well on the supermarket fluency task. In contrast, results differed significantly during the animal fluency task. The qualitative analyses indicated differences between groups related to the strategies used, especially with respect to the animal fluency task. The overall results suggest that there is not a substantial difference between literate and illiterate subjects related to the fundamental workings of semantic memory. However, there is indication that the content of semantic memory reflects differences in shared cultural background--in other words, formal education--, as indicated by the significant interaction between level of literacy and semantic criterion.  相似文献

Background: Previous studies have shown that brain‐damaged patients with selective deficits to phonological processes produced frequent phonological errors and similar error patterns in all spoken tasks, exhibited the effects of word frequency, grammatical class, and imageability, and were unable to make rhyming judgements, due to impaired lexical retrieval and/or phonological representations. Aims: This paper describes a Cantonese‐speaking brain‐damaged patient, LKK, whose performance patterns in spoken tasks indicate impairment to both the lexically mediated non‐semantic and semantic pathways of oral production, as well as the phonological output buffer. Methods & Procedures: A range of tasks was conducted including repetition, reading aloud, oral naming, written/spoken word–picture matching, non‐verbal semantic tests, written lexical decision, and homophone judgements. Outcomes & Results: LKK performed normally on written lexical decision, word–picture matching, and non‐verbal semantic tests, but he was unable to make homophone judgements and showed impaired production in all oral tasks. He was better able to read aloud names of objects than to name them. He also made more semantic errors in naming than reading. His accuracy in reading single words was affected by word frequency and form class. Further observations of his oral production included better (but nevertheless impaired) performance on repetition than reading and naming, a consistent effect of word length across tasks, and a tendency for phonological errors to occur on the coda compared with the onset. Conclusions: There was sufficient evidence for deficits of the phonological lexicon and/or the access to it along the non‐semantic route and the semantic pathway at the post‐semantic level in LKK. The effect of word length and comparable patterns of error distribution across spoken tasks suggested additional impairment to the phonological output buffer. The different levels of accuracy in repetition, reading, and naming, as well as the differential rates of semantic errors in these tasks were consistent with predictions of the summation hypothesis.  相似文献

Patients with semantic dementia (SD) show deficits in phoneme binding in immediate serial recall: when attempting to reproduce a sequence of words that they no longer fully understand, they show frequent migrations of phonemes between items (e.g., cap, frog recalled as "frap, cog"). This suggests that verbal short-term memory emerges directly from interactions between semantic and phonological systems, allowing semantic knowledge to make a critical contribution to the stability of phonological sequences. According to this standpoint, SD patients should show phoneme binding deficits in additional language tasks beyond standard assessments of verbal short-term memory: for example, these errors should emerge in paced reading, which also requires the rapid production of semantically degraded words in order. To test this hypothesis, we examined a cyclical paced reading task in three SD patients for the first time. Every patient showed deficits in phoneme binding: they were more vulnerable than a set of age-matched controls to phoneme competition effects following the repetition of a small set of words across several cycles. They also showed substantially elevated numbers of phoneme migration, substitution and omission errors, despite being able to read the individual words almost without error. These findings confirm that the semantic contribution to phoneme binding is disrupted in SD patients across tasks. In line with the view that verbal short-term memory emerges from interactions between basic phonological and semantic components, these effects occur both within classic short-term memory paradigms, such as immediate serial recall, and tasks without explicit memory demands, such as paced reading.  相似文献

Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is regarded as a benign form of epilepsy because of its usually favorable outcome, in terms of seizures. Eighteen children with BECTS were studied in terms of neuropsychological and learning abilities: intellectual quotient, oral language (phonological production, naming skills, verbal fluency and syntactic comprehension), drawing and visuo-spatial skills, visual and selective attention, verbal and visuo-spatial memory, reading, numeracy and spelling. The mean IQ of the population was within the normal range, but individual results were heterogeneous. Verbal functions and memory were normal. In contrast, drawing and visuo-spatial skills, attention and visuo-spatial memory were significantly weak compared to the normal range for age. Reading, numeracy and/or spelling ability were significantly delayed by one academic year or more in ten of the children. In conclusion, despite its benign outcome in terms of epilepsy, BECTS can be accompanied by specific cognitive disorders and low academic achievement.  相似文献

Routine clinical diagnosis of primary progressive non-fluent aphasia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
It may be difficult to distinguish between a primary progressive aphasia at a very mild stage from the beginning of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, this may be achieved by carrying out simple neuro-psychological tests. Nine non-fluent PPA (NFPPA) and 76 AD patients with comparable MMSE as well as 58 control subjects were evaluated using simple tests: MMSE, fluency, apraxia, naming, digital span, story memory, 5 words memory test. NFPPA patients had significantly impaired functions during the semantic category fluency and naming tests as compared to AD patients, whereas they showed a better delayed recall of the 5 words and story memory tests. As compared to AD, MMSE of NFPPA patients was also better in the time orientation and word recall sub-tests, although inferior in words repetition and language items. Thus, with comparable MMSE, NFPPA patients have more lexico-semantic difficulties, but a better delayed verbal memory than AD patients. These simple tests easily confirm the language impairment of NFPPA patients as opposed to the mnestic difficulties of AD, even at very early stages of these pathologies.  相似文献

We report our investigations of a single patient in whom there was a selective impairment of semantic memory. She had a marked deficit of individual word comprehension although other language and linguistic skills were relatively preserved. Here we document that her failures in word comprehension were stable over a long time period. She made "phonological" errors in defining meanings, which we argue are analogous to "visual" errors in reading. On verbal learning tasks her performance was shown to be relatively preserved, a finding which provides evidence of the dissociation of verbal semantic memory and episodic (event) memory.  相似文献

In this paper we examine the role of stored semantic knowledge in recall from short-term memory. We assessed the performance of a patient (FK), who showed a consistent lack of semantic knowledge for some words (‘unknown’) but not others (‘known’) on a range of serial recall tasks using both spoken and written words. Overall, FK was significantly better at recalling lists of known compared with unknown words. His recall of unknown words was characterized by numerous phonological errors, such as repeating ‘bear skunk’ as ‘bunk scare’. FK showed a relatively normal primacy effect in immediate recall, but a striking lack of a recency effect. This pattern of performance is useful for constraining theoretical accounts of language production and verbal short-term memory and for understanding the role that long-term semantic knowledge may play in maintaining information in short-term memory.  相似文献

The patient C.C. developed an amnesic syndrome at the age of 10 yr. Like adult amnesics, C.C. demonstrated impaired episodic memory for both verbal and visual materials although immediate memory span was spared. However, striking deficits were also observed on a wide variety of semantic memory tasks, including reading vocabulary and verbal fluency tests, semantic classification and lexical decision tasks and tests of verbal intelligence. On the other hand, C.C. showed normal learning and retention of two procedural tasks. It was argued that this evidence is inconsistent with the view that the amnesic syndrome represents a selective defect of episodic memory that leaves semantic memory relatively unaffected.  相似文献

Increasingly, children with Down syndrome receive literacy instruction based on a phonological awareness philosophy with the expectation of acquiring functional reading skills. Previous research demonstrates that a phonological awareness based reading programme delivers excellent results in terms of literacy acquisition and improvements in speech production for children with speech and language delays. Unfortunately, little research exists to support the effectiveness of this approach for children with Down syndrome. The current research study examined using a phonological awareness based intervention programme with three children with Down syndrome (aged 7;2, 8;4, and 8;10). A multiple baseline across behaviours design was selected. The intervention programme focused on the key skills of alliteration detection, phoneme isolation, spelling of orthographically regular words and rhyme detection. Two tasks (comprehension of passive structures and spatial structures) were selected as control behaviours. Phoneme segmentation and speech intelligibility were selected to investigate generalisation of intervention targets to other related skill areas. The results indicated that the participants improved the phonological awareness skills targeted in the intervention programme. Unfortunately, no generalisation to other areas of phonological awareness was noted. In summary, the results indicate that children with Down syndrome can benefit from a phonological awareness based approach to literacy.  相似文献

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory were examined among middle-age adults with Down syndrome and those with unspecified mental retardation in the context of Baddeley's working memory model. Recall was poorer for phonologically similar, semantically similar, and long words compared to recall of dissimilar short words. Compared to their peers, participants with Down syndrome had poorer recall in all categories except phonologically similar words. Most interestingly, semantic similarity lowered recall scores only in participants with Down syndrome. This selective effect of semantics reflects an influence of long-term memory on working memory and points to the need for additional explanations outside phonological loop processes to completely account for the relative impairment of verbal working memory among individuals with Down syndrome.  相似文献
