The pressures driving the need for an expanded practice scope in community pharmacy have been building for the past 2 decades. Many pharmacists have chosen to embrace the pharmaceutical care model in their practice sites to meet patient and healthcare system needs. The potential for medication therapy management (MTM) services provide an additional career opportunity for pharmacy graduates. Colleges of pharmacy offer advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) in the community setting that are designed to prepare students for these opportunities. These sites provide students with the opportunity to observe the integration of pharmaceutical care activities into community practice. Although developing an APPE site is challenging, serving as a preceptor benefits the students, the site, and the patients served. Therefore, colleges of pharmacy and community pharmacists are collaborating to increase the number of APPE sites to prepare pharmacy students for practice today and tomorrow. 相似文献

Objective
To establish and evaluate an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) in sports pharmacy.Design
Students actively participated in a variety of activities for this new 6-week elective APPE, including drug-testing collections, delivering presentations, and providing drug information. Students also learned about assays, compounding, and dispensing medications specifically for athletes, and visited various athletic medical facilities. Student were given written and practical certification examinations for drug-testing collections, and their specimen measurements were compared to those obtained by the testing laboratory for validation; satisfaction surveys were obtained from testing sites; and presentation evaluations were obtained from audience participants.Assessment
Students were able to accurately measure pH and specific gravity of urine samples and all students passed the certification examination. Students rated the APPE very high. Also, students received high satisfaction ratings on surveys administered to the officials of the schools where they tested and members of the groups to whom they gave presentations. Conclusion
Students gained experience and insight into the various roles of pharmacists in sports pharmacy and developed confidence in their ability to conduct drug-testing collections. 相似文献5.
This study was initiated to examine the attitudes of some of the future health care providers, family practice residents, toward various ambulatory pharmacy services. Pharmacy students were then asked to predict what the resident attitudes would be and the results were compared. This project addressed the following questions: (i) What are the expectations of family practice residents of what today's pharmacists should be doing? and (ii) How accurately can pharmacy students judge what the responses of the residents will be? The survey results indicated that the family practice residents' perceptions of certain pharmacist behaviors rated significantly higher than how the pharmacy students thought they would respond. Such behaviors included: (i) maintain and review patient profiles; (ii) counsel patients; (iii) take medication/allergy histories; (iv) provide therapeutic information to physicians; and (v) stock a wide variety of generic drugs. Most of these behaviors reflect direct involvement of the pharmacist in disseminating information to the patient and/or physician. Other expanded roles of the pharmacist such as triage, refill determination, reimbursement for consultation services, and chronic care management were given low priority. 相似文献

An important issue facing colleges of pharmacy is the integration of postgraduate clinical training programs into the mainstream of pharmacy education. Colleges of pharmacy have a major role to play in postgraduate clinical training programs to the benefit of the college, resident, and institution. Students must be provided with information about residencies during their first year, and this information must be continually reinforced throughout their academic career. Residency and fellowship programs contribute significantly to the education of pharmacy students. Colleges must take an active role, working in partnership with institutions to enhance postgraduate pharmacy training programs. 相似文献

Background Community pharmacies are promising locations for opportunistic screening due to pharmacist accessibility and ability to perform various health and medication management services. Little is known as to the provision of pharmacy services following screening initiatives. Objective To describe provision of pharmacy services for participants following a community pharmacy stroke screening initiative. Setting The Program for the Identification of “Actionable Atrial” Fibrillation Pharmacy initiative took place in 30 pharmacies in Alberta and Ontario, Canada. 1149 participants?≥?65 were screened for atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Method Retrospective, secondary analysis of data using participant case-report forms, pharmacy data, and pharmacy claims to describe pharmacy services received by participants post-screening. Main Outcome Measure Number and types of remunerated pharmacy services received by participants post-screening. Results A total of 535/1149 (46.6%) participants screened at their regular pharmacy were included in this analysis. Of these, 165 (30.8%) participants received 229 pharmacy services within 3 months post-screening, including 146 medication reviews, 57 influenza vaccinations, and 21 pharmaceutical opinions. A median (interquartile range, IQR) of 6 (2–11) pharmacy services were delivered, and median (IQR) reimbursement was $187.50 ($67.50–$342.50). Conclusions Approximately one-third of participants received a pharmacy service within 3 months post-screening. Relatively large numbers of annual and follow-up medication reviews were delivered despite low eligibility for annual-only reviews and despite many missed opportunities for pharmacy service provision in at-risk patients. In-pharmacy screening may facilitate provision of some services, namely medication reviews, by providing opportunities to identify patients at-risk. 相似文献

A program of providing contract pharmaceutical services to health care facilities by a college of pharmacy is described. Services are provided to ten facilities: five hospitals, three mental health centers, a free-standing cancer clinic and a primary care center. The initial development of the concept, the lines of authority between the college and the facilities, the nature of the contractual agreements, and the benefits of the program are discussed. Among the benefits are the development of advanced drug distribution systems and clinical services, secure positions for clinical faculty members, the availability of the college's resources to the health care facilities, training and employment opportunities for students, and the good will created by improved health services. 相似文献
