Acute inguinal pain associated with iliopectineal bursitis in four professional soccer players

Four professional soccer players were investigated for acute or subacute pain in the inguinal region. Clinical tests were negative for an inguinal hernia or adductor tendinitis. Resisted hip flexion caused pain. MRI in these four patients showed the onset of iliopectineal bursitis, with signal abnormalities predominantly at the periphery of the psoas tendon in contact with the iliopectineal eminence. Ultrasound-guided steroid injection allowed the two players injected to continue their sporting activity. The two other players were treated by 3 and 7 days rest and oral anti-inflammatory treatment.     

Cubital bursitis

We describe two cases of bursitis at the insertion of the biceps tendon. They presented as swellings in the cubital fossa with symptoms of median nerve irritation. The aetiology was probably mechanical trauma; both patients were cured by operation.     

Mycobacterial prepatellar bursitis

Prepatellar bursitis secondary to infection with an atypical mycobacterium developed in an 88-year-old man. A review of all previously reported cases in the English literature indicates tuberculosis is important in the differential diagnosis of prepatellar bursitis.     

Infective iliopsoas bursitis

Summary We report a case of infective iliopsoas bursitis, and to our knowledge a similar case has not been described. The anatomical relation between the bursa and the hip, and related pathological conditions are reviewed. The contribution of CT-guided catheterisation is emphasised as it allows aspiration of fluid, injection of radio-opaque material and lavage.

Résumé Les auteurs rapportent le cas d'une infection de la bourse séreuse du psoas. A leur connaissance il n'en existe aucun cas décrit dans la littérature. Après avoir rappelé les rapports anatomiques entre la bourse et l'articulation coxo-fémorale et les diverses lésions pouvant atteindre la bourse séreuse du psoas, ils insistent sur l'apport du cathétérisme guidé par tomodensitométrie. Cette méthode autorise non seulement l'examen du liquide pathologique; mais également l'opacification de la bourse infectée et aussi son lavage, dans un but thérapeutique.

     

Tuberculous trochanteric bursitis

A case of tuberculous trochanteric bursitis in a 40-year old man is reported. The findings of x-rays, echo, bone scanning, CT scan and MRI are shown. After one month of anti-TB therapy the bursa was excised en bloc as well as the lateral part of the trochanter. Then a continuous suction irrigation system was applied for 3 weeks using streptomycin solution. The anti-TB therapy was continued for one year. The patient was asymptomatic with no signs of recurrence 5 years postoperatively.     

Non-infectious Inflammatory Lesions of the Sinonasal Tract

This review covers the histopathology and pathogenesis of non-infectious inflammatory diseases of the sinonasal tract, in particular, sarcoidosis, granulomatous vasculitides Wegener, Churg–Strauss), relapsing polychondritis, eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis, chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal perforations. Molecular associations and mechanisms are emphasised to assist pathologists to put their observations into the context of clinical, genetic and environmental influences on patients’ diseases.
