Adipose tissue biomarkers of fatty acid intake   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
BACKGROUND: Biomarkers can provide a more accurate measure of long-term intake than can dietary questionnaires. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify which adipose tissue fatty acids are suitable biomarkers of intake as assessed with a validated food-frequency questionnaire. DESIGN: Costa Rican men with a mean (+/- SD) age of 56 +/- 11 y (n = 367) and women aged 60 +/- 10 y (n = 136) completed a 135-item food-frequency questionnaire and provided an adipose tissue sample. Fifty fatty acids were identified by capillary gas chromatography. Correlation coefficients were calculated after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking status. RESULTS: The best adipose tissue marker for total intake of saturated fatty acids was 15:0 + 17:0 (r = 0.18). Both 15:0 and 17:0 were also the best correlates of dairy product intake (r = 0.31 for each). The diet-adipose tissue correlations for n-3 fatty acids were r = 0.34 for 18:3, r = 0.15 for 20:5, and r = 0.18 for 22:6. Fish intake correlated significantly with these adipose tissue n-3 fatty acids. Dietary and adipose tissue n-6 fatty acids were highly correlated: 18:2 (r = 0.58) and 18:3 (r = 0.24). The best indicators of total trans fatty acid intake were ct18:2n-6 and tc18:2n-6 (r = 0.58 for each); total 18:1 trans fatty acid (r = 0.45) and 16:1 trans fatty acid (r = 0.16) were the next best indicators. CONCLUSIONS: Adipose tissue is a suitable biomarker of dietary fatty acid intake, particularly for n-3 and n-6 cis polyunsaturated fatty acids and trans fatty acids. Ideally, adipose tissue and dietary questionnaires should complement, rather than substitute for, each other in epidemiologic studies.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The results of some epidemiologic studies conducted by using questionnaires suggest that dietary fat composition influences diabetes risk. Confirmation of this finding with use of a biomarker is warranted. OBJECTIVE: We prospectively investigated the relation of plasma cholesterol ester (CE) and phospholipid (PL) fatty acid composition with the incidence of diabetes mellitus. DESIGN: In 2909 adults aged 45-64 y, plasma fatty acid composition was quantified by using gas-liquid chromatography and was expressed as a percentage of total fatty acids. Incident diabetes (n = 252) was identified during 9 y of follow-up. RESULTS: After adjustment for age, sex, baseline body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, physical activity, education, and parental history of diabetes, diabetes incidence was significantly and positively associated with the proportions of total saturated fatty acids in plasma CE and PL. The rate ratios of incident diabetes across quintiles of saturated fatty acids were 1.00, 1.36, 1.16, 1.60, and 2.08 (P = 0.0013) in CE and 1.00, 1.75, 1.87, 2.40, and 3.37 (P < 0.0001) in PL. In CE, the incidence of diabetes was also positively associated with the proportions of palmitic (16:0), palmitoleic (16:1n-7), and dihomo-gamma-linolenic (20:3n-6) acids and inversely associated with the proportion of linoleic acid (18:2n-6). In PL, incident diabetes was positively associated with the proportions of 16:0 and stearic acid (18:0). CONCLUSIONS: The proportional saturated fatty acid composition of plasma is positively associated with the development of diabetes. Our findings with the use of this biomarker suggest indirectly that the dietary fat profile, particularly that of saturated fat, may contribute to the etiology of diabetes.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The long-term effects of fetal hyperinsulinemia, time course of changes in liver and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) lipid levels and fatty acid compositions were investigated in obese offspring of streptozotocin-induced mildly diabetic rats. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Mild hyperglycemia in pregnant rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin on day 5 of gestation. Control pregnant rats were injected with citrate buffer. Liver and VLDL lipids and fatty acids were analyzed in offspring at different ages. RESULTS: At birth, obese pups had higher VLDL triglyceride levels, saturated fatty acids, and C20:4n-6. They also had lower C18:2n-6 proportions in VLDL triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesteryl esters than controls pups. In 1-month-old male and female obese rats, VLDL and liver lipid amounts were similar to those in their respective controls; however, high levels of C18:2n-6 and C20:4n-6 were noted in liver and VLDL lipids. At the age of 2 months, liver and VLDL triglyceride levels were higher in obese females than in control females. Fatty acid abnormalities seen in obese rats included low C18:3n-3 and high C22:6n-3 proportions in liver triglycerides and phospholipids. At the age of 3 months, obese rats, both males and females, compared with control animals, had higher VLDL and hepatic lipids with reduced C20:4n-6 levels and polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids ratios in hepatic and VLDL triglycerides and phospholipids. DISCUSSION: Fetal obesity, associated with alterations in VLDL lipid fatty acid composition, represents an important risk factor for adult obesity and diabetes.  相似文献

Enhancing the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and decreasing the saturated fatty acid content of beef is an important target in terms of improving the nutritional value of this food for the consumer. The present study examined the effects of feeding a ruminally protected lipid supplement (PLS) rich in PUFA on the fatty acid composition of longissimus thoracis muscle and associated subcutaneous adipose tissue. Animals were fed ad libitum on grass silage plus one of three concentrate treatments in which the lipid source was either Megalac (rich in palmitic acid; 16 : 0) or PLS (soybean, linseed and sunflower-seed oils resulting in an 18 : 2n-6:18 : 3n-3 value of 2.4:1). Treatment 1 contained 100 g Megalac/kg (Mega, control); treatment 2 (PLS1) contained 54 g Megalac/kg with 500 g PLS/d fed separately; treatment 3 (PLS2) contained no Megalac and 1000 g PLS/d fed separately. The PLS was considered as part of the overall concentrate allocation per d in maintaining an overall forage:concentrate value of 60:40 on a DM basis. Total dietary fat was formulated to be 0.07 of DM of which 0.04 was the test oil. Total intramuscular fatty acids (mg/100 g muscle) were decreased by 0.31 when feeding PLS2 compared with Mega (P<0.05). In neutral lipid, the PLS increased the proportion of 18 : 2n-6 and 18 : 3n-3 by 2.7 and 4.1 on diets PLS1 and PLS2 v. Mega, respectively. Similar responses were noted for these fatty acids in phospholipid. The amounts or proportions of 20 : 4n-6, 20 : 5n-3 or 22 : 6n-3 were not influenced by diet whereas the amounts and proportions of 22 : 4n-6 and 22 : 5n-3 in phospholipid were decreased with inclusion of the PLS. The amounts of the saturated fatty acids, 14 : 0, 16 : 0 and 18 : 0, in neutral lipid were on average 0.37 lower on treatment PLS2 compared with Mega. Feeding the PLS also decreased the proportion of 16 : 0 in neutral lipid. The amount of 18 : 1n-9 (P=0.1) and the amount and proportion of 18 : 1 trans (P<0.01) were lower on treatments PLS1 and PLS2 in neutral lipid and phospholipid. Conjugated linoleic acid (cis-9, trans-11) was not influenced by diet in the major storage fraction for this fatty acid, neutral lipid. The PUFA:saturated fatty acids value was increased markedly (x2.5) with inclusion of the PLS (P<0.001) while the Sigman-6 : n-3 value increased slightly (x1.2; P=0.015). The results suggest that the protected lipid used, which was rich in PUFA, had a high degree of protection from the hydrogenating action of rumen micro-organisms. The PLS resulted in meat with a lower content of total fat, decreased saturated fatty acids and much higher 18 : 2n-6 and 18 : 3n-3. The net result was a large shift in polyunsaturated: saturated fatty acids, 0.28 v. 0.08, on feeding PLS2 compared with Mega, respectively.  相似文献

To assess milk fatty acid composition in genetically normotensive (Wistar Kyoto, WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats, WKY and SH dams (n = 10/strain) were milked under halothane anesthesia on d 5, 13 and 21 postpartum. Milk samples of 0.5-1.0 mL were then analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. Additional WKY and SH dams (n = 2/strain) were milked on d 5 and 21 postpartum for assessment of total milk fat. In both WKY and SH strains, the amount of 8:0 and 10:0 fatty acids increased from d 5 to 21 (p less than 0.001), whereas the quantity of 18:3(n-6), 20:3(n-9), 20:3(n-6), 22:4(n-6), 22:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) fatty acids declined over the same period (p less than 0.001). Milk from SH rats had higher levels of 10:0 and 20:4(n-6) fatty acids on all sampling days than did milk from WKY rats (p less than 0.001), and milk from SH rats had lower levels of 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9) and 18:2(n-6) fatty acids on d 13 and 21 (p less than 0.001). There were no differences in milk fat content between strains. These data suggest that genetically hypertensive rat pups obtain significantly greater amounts of 20:4(n-6) and significantly lower amounts of 18:2(n-6) fatty acids from maternal milk than do their normotensive counterparts.  相似文献

The present study evaluates the effect of dietary trans fatty acids on diaphragm phospholipid fatty acid composition, intramyocellular triacylglycerol content and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in comparison with dietary saturated fatty acids. Male weanling WNIN rats were divided into three groups and fed for 3 months on one of the following diets containing 10 % oil differing in fatty acid composition: control diet, saturated fatty acid diet and trans fatty acid diet. Dietary trans fatty acids increased the intramyocellular triacylglycerols and decreased the ratio of 20 : 4n-6 to 18 : 2n-6 and long-chain PUFA levels (20 %) in diaphragm phospholipids, indicating inhibition of PUFA biosynthesis. However, saturated fatty acids decreased both 18 : 2n-6 and 20 : 4n-6 without change in the ratio. Trans fatty acid-induced alterations in diaphragm phospholipid fatty acid composition and intramyocellular triacylglycerol content were associated with decreased insulin-stimulated glucose transport in the diaphragm. These observations suggest that dietary trans fatty acids decrease diaphragm insulin sensitivity, possibly due to increased intramyocellular triacylglycerol accumulation and decreased long-chain PUFA in phospholipids.  相似文献

Twenty-eight fatty acids (C8:0 to C24:l n-9) were measured by gas chromatography in four normal cell lines (C3H / 10T1 / 2, CCD-18Co, CCD-25SK and CCD-37Lu) and seven cancer cell lines (C-41, Caov-3, LS-180, PC-3, SK-MEL-28, SK-MES-1 and U-87 MG). Results show differences in the content and proportions of fatty acids when comparing cancer cell lines with their normal counterparts. Cancer cell lines showed lower C20: 4 n-6, C24:1 n-9, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's) and ratios of C20:4 n-6 to C20:5 n-3 and C16:0 to C18:1 n-9 and stearic to oleic (SA/OA) than their normal counterparts. All cancer cell lines had SA/OA ratios lower than 7.0 while normal cell lines had ratios greater than 0.7 (p<0.05). In addition, the ratios of total saturated fatty acids (SFA) to PUFA'S and the concentration of C18:1 n-9, C18:2 n-6, C20:5 n-3 were higher in cancer cell lines as compared to normal cell lines. A positive correlation was detected between C16:0 and longer SFA'S (r = +0.511, p<0.05) in normal cell lines whereas a negative correlation (r=0.608, p<0.05) was obtained for malignant cell lines. Moreover, cancerous cell lines exhibited a particular desaturation defect and an abnormal incorporation of C18:2 n-6 and C20-4 n-6 fatty acids.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of plasma phospholipids, red blood cell (RBC) phosphatidylcholine (PC), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was determined for low-birth-weight (LBW) infants when full oral feeding commenced (day 0) and after a further 28 d (day 28). They were fed their mother's expressed breast milk (PTM, n = 9), formula (SCF, n = 16) with 2% 18:3n-3 fatty acids, 20% 18:2n-6 fatty acids, or a combination of SCF and PTM (n = 11). Concentrations of all 20- and 22-carbon n-6 and n-3 fatty acids were similar among the infant groups on days 0 and 28 (mean postnatal age 42 +/- 1.3 d). The results suggest that formula with greater than or equal to 2% 18:3n-3 and a ratio of 18:2n-6 to 18:3n-3 similar to that of human milk may permit incorporation of n-3 fatty acids in LBW infant tissues equivalent to that from human milk.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Dietary factors might modify cognitive decline that results from aging. Fatty acids, which are limiting factors in brain development, are prime candidates. OBJECTIVE: We studied the relation between erythrocyte membrane fatty acid composition and cognitive decline in free-living volunteers. DESIGN: In 1995, erythrocyte membrane fatty acid composition was measured in 246 men and women (aged 63-74 y) from the Etude du Vieillissement Artériel (EVA) cohort. During a 4-y follow-up, cognitive abilities were assessed longitudinally with the Mini-Mental State Examination. Moderate cognitive decline was defined as a > or = 2-point decrease over the 4 y. The predictive value of fatty acid proportions on cognitive decline was assessed with a multivariate logistic model that included age, sex, education level, and initial Mini-Mental State Examination score as covariates. RESULTS: Higher proportions of both stearic acid (saturated, 18:0) and total n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids were associated with greater risk of cognitive decline; the odds ratios were 1.91 (95% CI: 1.16, 3.15) and 1.59 (95% CI: 1.04, 2.44), respectively, for 1-SD differences in fatty acid proportions. Conversely, a higher proportion of total n-3 fatty acids was associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline; the odds ratio was 0.59 (95% CI: 0.38, 0.93). CONCLUSIONS: The inverse association between cognitive decline and the ratio of n-3 to n-6 fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes agrees with results obtained in some studies that assessed fatty acid intake by using dietary questionnaires. These results require confirmation but provide new rationale for studying how these modifiable risk factors might be implicated in the cognitive aging process.  相似文献

Abstract

It is known that black soybean (BS) extract, rich in polyphenols, has beneficial effects against obesity, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, detailed effects of BS on lipid metabolism have not been documented well. In the present study, we compared fatty acid composition in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues of high-fat fed (HFF) rats and BS administered HFF rats. Black soybean administration for 6 weeks influenced neither body nor adipose tissue weights, blood glucose, plasma insulin levels, or insulin sensitivity. However, BS reduced several saturated (C14:0 and C16:0), monounsaturated (C14:1n-5 and C18:1n-9) and n-6 polyunsaturated (C18:2n-6, C20:3n-6, C20:4n-6 and C22:4n-6) fatty acid contents in subcutaneous fat without any change in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid contents. No such effect was observed in fatty acid composition in visceral fat. Long-chain fatty acids are involved in regulation of inflammation. Therefore, those reduced fatty acids may be linked to the effects on suppressing inflammation.  相似文献

Fish is the best source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), specifically n-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. The objective of the present study was to determine the fat content and fatty acid compositions of 34 marine water fish species from the Mediterranean Sea. The fatty acid compositions of fish consisted of 30.10-46.88% saturated fatty acids, 11.83-38.17% monounsaturated fatty acids and 20.49-49.31% PUFA. In most species, the following fatty acids were identified: mystiric acid (C14:0, 0.72-8.09%), pentadecanoic acid (15:0, 0.05-2.35%), palmitic acid (C16:0, 15.97-31.04%), palmitoleic acid (C16:1, 1.48-19.61%), heptadecanoic acid (C17:0, 0.31-1.84%), cis-10-heptadecenoic acid (C17:1, 0.17-2.01%), stearic acid (C18:0, 2.79-11.20%), oleic acid (C18:1n9, 2.44-28.97%), linoleic acid (C18:2n-6, 0.06-3.48%), arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6, 0.12-10.72%), cis-5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3, 1.94-10%) and cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3, 3.31-31.03%). The proportions of n-3 PUFA ranged from 12.66% for annular seabream to 36.54% for European hake, whereas the proportions of PUFA n-6 were between 1.24% for oceanic puffer and 12.76% for flathead mullet. The results of this study show that these fish species were rich in n-3 PUFA, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid.  相似文献

The effects of diets high in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; provided by fish oil), n-6 PUFA (sunflower oil) or in more-saturated fatty acids (tallow) on the distribution of subclasses of choline phospholipids (PC) and ethanolamine phospholipids (PE) from the breast muscle of broiler chickens were examined. Supplementation with the different fatty acids had no effect on the distribution of phospholipid subclasses. Feeding sunflower oil or tallow gave a molecular-species profile similar in both fatty acid subtype and proportion. In the diacyl PC phospholipids, 16 : 0-18 : 1n-9 and 16 : 0-18 : 2n-6 accounted for approximately 60 % of the total molecular species, whereas for the alkylenyl PC the predominant species were 16 : 0-18 : 1n-9 and 16 : 0-20 : 4n-6. Of the diacyl PE the dominant species was 18 : 0-20 : 4n-6 which accounted for 50 % of the molecular species, and of the alkylenyl PE the dominant species were 16 : 0-18 : 1n-9, 16 : 0-20 : 4n-6 and 18 : 0-20 : 4n-6. Supplementation with fish oil significantly increased levels of both eicosapentaenoic acid (20 : 5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22 : 6n-3) in PC and PE when compared with either sunflower oil or tallow supplementation. The increase in the n-3 PUFA incorporation was associated with a corresponding decrease in the proportion of arachidonic acid (20 : 4n-6) in both PC and PE. Different dietary fats induce different patterns of fatty acid incorporation and substitution in the sn-2 position of the diacyl and alkylenyl PC and PE of avian breast muscle, and this finding is indicative of selective acyl remodelling in these two phospholipids.  相似文献

Forty-five Barrosã calves produced according to Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) guidelines were used to characterise intramuscular fat composition (neutral and polar lipid fractions), cholesterol and α-tocopherol contents in Barrosã-PDO meat obtained from lowlands (<400 m), ridges (400–700 m) and mountains (>700 m). In addition, meat fatty acids were used as chemical markers to differentiate veal from farms located at distinct grazing altitudes through a canonical discriminant analysis. Although the altitude of farm location seems to slightly affect the fat composition of Barrosã-PDO veal, still it depends on the muscle considered. The fatty acid composition of the polar fraction from biceps femoris muscle was the most influenced by the altitude of farm location (14:0, 16:1c, 18:1c9, 18:2n-6, 20:4n-6, odd chain saturated fatty acids, branched chain fatty acids, cis-monounsaturated fatty acids, n-6 and total polyunsaturated fatty acids; P < 0.05), followed by the polar fraction of supraspinatus muscle (18:0, conjugated linoleic acids, 20:4n-6 and even-chain saturated fatty acids; P < 0.05). Furthermore, the results herein suggest that intramuscular fatty acid profile has little relevance to discriminate Barrosã-PDO meat from lowlands, ridges and mountains.  相似文献

The composition of fatty acids in serum cholesteryl esters was analyzed with gas chromatography in 759 Finnish boys and girls aged 3-18 years in 1980 and again in the same subjects in 1983 and in 1986. The mean percentage of linoleate (18:2 n-6) increased from 50.85% in 1980 to 52.60% in 1986, while there was a decrease in myristate (14:0), palmitate (16:0), and eicosapentaenoate (20:5 n-3). The percentage of oleate (18:1) did not change. The stability (tracking) of cholesteryl ester fatty acid composition was examined by calculating linear correlation coefficients among the percentages of each fatty acid at the three study points. For linoleate, 3- and 6-year tracking correlations were 0.59-0.61 and 0.50, respectively; they were of about the same magnitude for arachidonate (20:4 n-6) and lower for the other fatty acids. Results indicate that the serum cholesteryl ester fatty acid composition has somewhat lower tracking than the total cholesterol concentration. The changes in the mean fatty acid composition of the study population obviously reflect a shift from saturated to unsaturated dietary fats.  相似文献

The developing fetus requires an adequate supply of fatty acids, in particular PUFA, for optimal growth and development. Little is known about the transfer of fatty acids by the placenta into the fetal circulation. However, the molecular form in which fatty acids are transferred into the fetal circulation may influence their metabolism and hence their availability to specific tissues. The aim of the present study was to determine which lipid pools in the fetal circulation become enriched in fatty acids from the placenta by comparing the fatty acid compositions of individual lipid pools between umbilical venous (UV) and umbilical arterial (UA) plasma. Plasma from the UV and UA was collected after delivery from ten uncomplicated pregnancies, and the fatty acid composition of each lipid class was determined by GC. Total NEFA concentration in the UV was twofold higher than in the UA (P < 0·05) due to enrichment in 16 : 0, 16 : 1n-7, 18 : 1n-9, 18 : 1n-7, 18 : 2n-6, 20 : 3n-6, 20 : 4n-6, 24 : 0 and 22 : 6n-3. Total cholesteryl ester concentration was twofold higher in the UV than in the UA (P < 0·05) due to enrichment in 16 : 0, 16 : 1n-7, 18 : 0, 18 : 1n-9, 18 : 1n-7, 18 : 2n-6 and 20 : 4n-6. There were no significant UV-UA differences in the total concentration or composition of TAG or phosphatidylcholine. The present study demonstrates differential enrichment across the placenta of fatty acids into specific lipid pools in the fetal circulation. Such partitioning may facilitate supply of individual fatty acids to specific fetal tissues.  相似文献

Brown trout is one of the most preferred wild freshwater fish species in the east Black Sea region (Turkey) due to its nutritional value and palatable aroma as well as being popular for sport fishing. In this research, seasonal variations in the crude lipid, gonadosomatic index and fatty acid composition of wild and farmed brown trout were investigated. The spawning period of wild and farmed brown trout appears to be from August to October and from October to January, respectively. The mean crude lipid content in farmed brown trout (3.62%) was significantly higher (P≤0.05) than that of wild brown trout (2.80%). Significant seasonal differences (P≤0.05) in crude lipid content were observed in both fish. The percentage of total saturated fatty acids was similar (P≥0.05) in both fish. Total polyunsaturated fatty acids were higher (P≤0.05) in the wild brown trout compared with the farmed brown trout, while its total monounsaturated fatty acids content was lower (P≤0.05). The muscle lipids of wild fish contained significantly (P≤0.05) higher percentages of C16:1n-7, C17:1n-7, C18:3n-3, C20:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C20:5n-3 and C22:2n-6 fatty acids and contained lower percentages of C14:0, C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, C20:1n-9, C24:1n-9 and C22:6n-3 fatty acids than farmed fish. The total amounts of n-3 fatty acids in wild fish were higher than in farmed fish, but total amounts of n-6 fatty acids in farmed fish were higher than in wild fish. The n3/n6 proportion in wild fish was higher than that of farmed fish.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Human milk fatty acids vary with maternal dietary fat composition. Hydrogenated dietary oils with trans fatty acids may displace cis n-6 and n-3 unsaturated fatty acids or have adverse effects on their metabolism. The effects of milk trans, n-6, and n-3 fatty acids in breast-fed infants are unclear, although n-6 and n-3 fatty acids are important in infant growth and development. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the relations between trans and cis unsaturated fatty acids in milk and plasma phospholipids and triacylglycerols of breast-fed infants, and to identify the major maternal dietary sources of trans fatty acids. DESIGN: We collected milk from 103 mothers with exclusively breast-fed 2-mo-old infants, blood from 62 infants, and 3-d dietary records from 21 mothers. RESULTS: Mean (+/-SEM) percentages of trans fatty acids were as follows: milk, 7.1 +/- 0.32%; infants' triacylglycerols, 6.5 +/- 0. 33%; and infants' phospholipids, 3.7 +/- 0.16%. Milk trans fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3), arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) (P < 0.001), and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) (P = 0.007) were each related to the same fatty acid in infant plasma phospholipids. Milk trans fatty acids were inversely related to milk 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3, but not to milk or infant plasma 20:4n-6 or 22:6n-3. trans Fatty acids represented 7.7% of maternal total fat intake (2.5% of total energy); the major dietary sources were bakery products and breads (32%), snacks (14%), fast foods (11%), and margarines and shortenings (11%). CONCLUSIONS: There were comparable concentrations of trans fatty acids in the maternal diet, breast milk, and plasma triacylglycerols of breast-fed infants. Prepared foods were the major dietary source of trans fatty acids.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Menopausal status effects female anatomical functioning at a variety of system-wide and cellular levels, including cellular membrane composition. This study analyzed a nested case-control ORDET data set of 433 pre and post-menopausal breast cancer controls to examine the effects of menopausal status on the fatty acid composition of the red blood cell membrane.METHODS: ORDET is a prospective cohort study conducted in Italy to investigate the etiologic role of hormones and diet in breast cancer development. The fatty acid composition was measured and analyzed by gas chromotography, comparing retention time with standard measurement. Twenty-two individual fatty acids were measured, recorded, and categorized into four fatty acid groups: saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated n-6 (PUFA n-6), and polyunsaturated (PUFA n-3) fatty acids.RESULTS: Post-menopausal women had consistently lower mean values for all four fatty acid categories and all individual fatty acids. Statistically significant mean differences, by menopausal status, were observed for three of the four fatty acid categories: saturated fatty acids (p = 0.006), PUFA n-6 acids (p = 0.001), and PUFA n-3 acids (p = 0.000). The biggest statistically significant differences in mean values among individual fatty acids for each category were observed for Palmitic acid (p = 0.009), Oleic acid (p = 0.040), Linoleic acid (p = 0.000), and Docosahexaenoic acid (p = 0.000). Individual fatty acids were also less highly correlated among post-menopausal women.CONCLUSIONS: There was an observed relationship between menopausal status and the fatty acid composition of the red blood cell membrane that warrants further study.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the influences of age on dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of fatty acids (FAs) in Japanese female dietitians. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In autumn 1996, we estimated dietary FA intakes based on 7 day weighed diet records and analyzed plasma FA concentrations in 79 healthy Japanese female dietitians, and investigated their relationships with age, dividing into three age groups (young (32-42 y), middle-aged (43-50 y) and elderly (51-66 y)). RESULTS: Dietary intakes of total FA, saturated FAs, monounsaturated FAs, n-3 polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) were significantly highest in the middle-aged group, and lowest in the elderly. Similar trends were observed for dietary intakes of n-6 PUFAs and linoleic acid (18:2n-6), but there were no differences with regard to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) and n-3 highly unsaturated FAs (HUFAs=EPA+22:5n-3+DHA). On the other hand, plasma concentrations of all FAs except for arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) demonstrated positive correlations with age. Moreover, plasma concentrations of EPA in all age groups, DHA in the elderly and n-3 HUFAs in the middle-aged and the elderly were all positively correlated with dietary intakes. CONCLUSIONS: We should take into account the influence of age on dietary habit and lipid metabolism when interpreting associations between dietary FA intakes and plasma FA concentrations.  相似文献
