Purpose

Resent research has suggested that loaded multi-joint movements could reveal a linear force–velocity (FV) relationship. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the FV relationship both across different types of vertical jumps and across different F and V variables.

Methods

Ten healthy subjects performed maximum various vertical jumps that were either loaded or unloaded by constant external forces of up to 30 % of their body weight. Both the maximum and averaged F and V data were recorded.

Results

The observed FV relationships proved to be strong (median correlation coefficients ranged 0.78–0.93) and quasi-linear. Their F- and V-intercepts and the calculated maximum power (P) were highly reliable (0.85 < ICC < 0.98), while their concurrent validity with respect to their directly measured values was on average moderate-to-large. The obtained FV relationships also revealed that (1) the assessment of maximum F and P could be somewhat more reliable and valid than the assessment of maximum V, (2) natural countermovement jumps should be employed rather than the jumps performed from a fixed squat position, while (3) both maximum and averaged F and V variables could be used despite revealing markedly different regression parameters.

Conclusions

The data generally reveal a reliable, valid, strong and quasi-linear FV relationship across variety of vertical jumps and the recorded F and V variables. Therefore, we conclude that the loaded vertical jumps could be developed into a routine method for testing the force, velocity, and power generating capacity of leg extensors.  相似文献

Biomechanical models of whole muscles commonly used in simulations of musculoskeletal function and movement typically assume that the muscle generates force as a scaled-up muscle fiber. However, muscles are comprised of motor units that have different intrinsic properties and that can be activated at different times. This study tested whether a muscle model comprised of motor units that could be independently activated resulted in more accurate predictions of force than traditional Hill-type models. Forces predicted by the models were evaluated by direct comparison with the muscle forces measured in situ from the gastrocnemii in goats. The muscle was stimulated tetanically at a range of frequencies, muscle fiber strains were measured using sonomicrometry, and the activation patterns of the different types of motor unit were calculated from electromyographic recordings. Activation patterns were input into five different muscle models. Four models were traditional Hill-type models with different intrinsic speeds and fiber-type properties. The fifth model incorporated differential groups of fast and slow motor units. For all goats, muscles and stimulation frequencies the differential model resulted in the best predictions of muscle force. The in situ muscle output was shown to depend on the recruitment of different motor units within the muscle.  相似文献

Methamphetamine and HIV impair thyroid function, but few studies have investigated their combined effects on thyroid dysregulation. This study examined the associations of methamphetamine use alone and in combination with HIV on thyroid function among men in South Florida. Measures of thyroid function in methamphetamine-using, HIV-infected (METH+HIV+; n?=?127) and HIV-negative (METH+HIV?; n?=?46) men who have sex with men (MSM) were compared to non-methamphetamine-using, HIV-negative men (METH?HIV?; n?=?136). Thyroid function was dysregulated in methamphetamine-using MSM, irrespective of HIV status. Both meth-using groups had greater odds of abnormal thyroid stimulating hormone levels and significantly higher mean free triiodothyronine (T3) levels. Elevated free T3 was associated with greater depressive symptoms. Overall, outcomes have important implications for assessment of thyroid function in methamphetamine users, particularly among those presenting with depression.  相似文献

Experiments on white rats were performed to study the effects of bilateral lesioning of the striatum on activation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal system (HHAS) after unilateral adrenalectomy. These studies showed that increases in the weight of the surviving adrenal gland were smaller in striatectomized rats than in controls. There was a significant decrease in corticosteroid production by the intact gland. These changes were most marked after destruction of the dorsal parts of the nucleus. These data provide evidence for involvement of the striatum in controlling HHAS activity via a feedback mechanism.  相似文献

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is not the sole, but perhaps the most important volume regulator in vertebrates. To gain insights into the function and evolution of its components, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis of its main related genes. We found that important parts of the system began to appear with primitive chordates and tunicates and that all major components were present at the divergence of bony fish, with the exception of the Mas receptor. The Mas receptor first appears after the bony-fish/tetrapod divergence. This phase of evolutionary innovation happened about 400 million years ago. We found solid evidence that angiotensinogen made its appearance in cartilage fish. The presence of several RAAS genes in organisms that lack all the components shows that these genes have had other ancestral functions outside of their current role. Our analysis underscores the utility of sequence comparisons in the study of evolution. Such analyses may provide new hypotheses as to how and why in today's population an increased activity of the RAAS frequently leads to faulty salt and volume regulation, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, opening up new and clinically important research areas for evolutionary medicine.  相似文献

Abstract

It is well acknowledged that stent implantation causes abnormal stretch and strains on the arterial wall, which contribute to the formation and progression of restenosis. However, the experimental characterization of the strain field on the stented vessel is scant. In this work, the balloon-expandable stent implantation inside an artery analogue was captured through two high-speed CCD cameras. The surface strain maps on the stented tube were quantified with a 3-D digital image correlation technique. The strain history at one specific reference point illustrated three stenting phases, including balloon inflation, pressurization and deflation. The surface strain distributions along one axial path were obtained at various time points to demonstrate the stent–vessel interactions. The radial wall thickness reduction history was used to evaluate the pressure–diameter relationship for the balloon. Results indicated that the expansion process of the balloon was significantly altered by the external loadings from both the stent and artery analogue. In addition, the repeatability of the stenting experiments was demonstrated through two tests with a change of 5% in the stent-induced maximum first principal strain. Moreover, a computational model of the stenting procedure was developed to recapture the stenting experiments. Comparison between experiments and simulation showed a difference of 7.17% in the first principal strain averaged over the high strain area. This indicated the validation of the computational framework, which can be used to investigate the strain or stress field throughout the computational domain, a feature that is not affected by experimental techniques.  相似文献

Purpose

Knowledge on the normative growth of the spine is relevant in the prenatal detection of its abnormalities. This study describes the size of the ossification center of C1–S5 vertebral bodies.

Materials and methods

Using CT, digital-image analysis, and statistics, the size of the ossification center of C1–S5 vertebral bodies in 55 spontaneously aborted human fetuses aged 17–30 weeks was examined.

Results

No sex significant differences were found. The body ossification centers were found within the entire presacral spine and in 85.5 % of S1, in 76.4 % of S2, in 67.3 % of S3, in 40.0 % of S4, and in 14.5 % of S5. All the values for the atlas were sharply smaller than for the axis. The mean transverse diameter of the body ossification center gradually increased from the axis to T12 vertebra, so as to stabilize through L1–L3 vertebrae, and finally was intensively decreasing to S5 vertebra. There was a gradual increase in sagittal diameter of the body ossification center from the axis to T5 vertebra and its stabilization for T6–T9 vertebrae. Afterward, an alternate progression was observed: a decrease in values for T10–T12 vertebrae, an increase in values for L1–L2 vertebrae, and finally a decrease in values for L3–S5 vertebrae. The values of cross-sectional area of ossification centers were gradually increasing from the axis to L2 vertebra and then started decreasing to S5 vertebra. The following cross-sectional areas were approximately equivalent to each other: for L5 and T3–T5, and for S4 and C1. The volumetric growth of the body ossification center gradually increased from the axis to L3 vertebra and then sharply decreased from L4 to S5.

Conclusions

No male–female differences are found in the size of the body ossification centers of the spine. The growth dynamics for morphometric parameters of the body ossification centers of the spine follow similarly with gestational age.  相似文献

We report a patient with Langerhans-cell histiocytosis (LCH) localized to the hard palate that was later proven to be associated with Erdheim–Chester disease (ECD), involving the right breast, skeleton, retroperitoneum and left orbit. The diagnosis was based on the symmetric osteosclerosis of the long bones diaphyses (tibias and fibulas), breast lump histopathological/immunohistochemical findings and retroperitoneum and left orbit images in magnetic resonance. Mammary involvement by ECD is an extremely rare condition, which should be differentiated from some benign and malignant mimickers, especially the histiocytoid type of breast carcinoma. Characteristic histological features plus clinical and radiographic information are needed to achieve a correct diagnosis. The ECD, its relation to the LCH and details of the breast lesion are discussed.  相似文献

The cerebellum is present in all extant gnathostomes or jawed vertebrates, of which cartilaginous fishes represent the most ancient radiation. Since the isthmic organizer induces the formation of the cerebellum, comparative genoarchitectonic analysis on the meso-isthmo-cerebellar region of cartilaginous fishes with respect to that of jawless vertebrates could reveal why the isthmic organizer acquires the ability to induce the formation of the cerebellum in gnathostomes. In the present work we analyzed the expression pattern of a variety of genes related to the cerebellar formation and patterning (ScOtx2, ScGbx2, ScFgf8, ScLmx1b, ScIrx1, ScIrx3,ScEn2, ScPax6 and ScLhx9) by in situ hybridization, and the distribution of Pax6 protein in the developing hindbrain of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula. The genoarchitectonic code in this species revealed high degree of conservation with respect to that of other gnathostomes. This resemblance may reveal the features of the ancestral condition of the gene network operating for specification of the rostral hindbrain patterning. Accordingly, the main subdivisions of the rostral hindbrain of S. canicula could be recognized. Our results support the existence of a rhombomere 0, identified as the ScFgf8/ScGbx2/ScEn2-positive and mainly negative ScIrx3 domain just caudal to the midbrain ScIrx1/ScOtx2/ScLmx1b-positive domain. The differential ScEn2 and Pax6 expression in the rhombomere 1 revealed anterior and posterior subdivisions. Interestingly, dissimilarities between S. canicula and lampreys (jawless vertebrates) were noted in the expression of Irx, Lhx and Pax genes, which could be part of significant gene network changes through evolution that caused the emergence of the cerebellum.  相似文献

The parameters of wave intensity analysis are calculated from incremental changes in pressure and velocity. While it is clear that forward- and backward-traveling waves induce incremental changes in pressure, not all incremental changes in pressure are due to waves; changes in pressure may also be due to changes in the volume of a compliant structure. When the left ventricular ejects blood rapidly into the aorta, aortic pressure increases, in part, because of the increase in aortic volume: aortic inflow is momentarily greater than aortic outflow. Therefore, to properly quantify the effects of forward or backward waves on arterial pressure and velocity (flow), the component of the incremental change in arterial pressure that is due only to this increase in arterial volume—and not, fundamentally, due to waves—first must be excluded. This component is the pressure generated by the filling and emptying of the reservoir, Otto Frank’s Windkessel.  相似文献

The renin–angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of hypertension. However, the role of RAS in preeclampsia is largely unknown, because the plasma concentration of renin and angiotensin (AII) is lower in preeclampsia than in normal pregnancy, whereas its cardinal sign is hypertension. A pressor response to AII infusions can predict the onset of preeclampsia, resulting in involvement of RAS in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. It has been reported that patients with preeclampsia exhibit angiotensin type I receptor agonistic autoantibody (AT1-AA), suggesting the involvement of RAS in the pathogenesis of this condition. The physiological action of AT1-AA can explain the various clinical symptoms of preeclampsia. However, the significance of circulatory RAS, including AT1-AA, in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains obscure. Since many reports state that circulating RAS is thought to be suppressed in preeclampsia it is difficult to explain the onset of hypertension in preeclampsia by circulating RAS. Therefore, I propose new insights into the role of RAS in preeclampsia to resolve the contradiction as above-mentioned. The recent discovery of tissue RAS, on which prorenin and its receptor act, suggests a promising new direction in understanding the role of RAS in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.  相似文献

During trunk-assisted reaching to targets placed within arms length, the influence of trunk motion on the hand trajectory is compensated for by changes in the arm configuration. The role of proprioception in this compensation was investigated by analyzing the movements of 2 deafferented and 12 healthy subjects. Subjects reached to remembered targets (placed ~80° ipsilateral or ~45° contralateral to the sagittal midline) with an active forward movement of the trunk produced by hip flexion. In 40% of randomly selected trials, trunk motion was mechanically blocked. No visual feedback was provided during the experiment. The hand trajectory and velocity profiles of healthy subjects remained invariant whether or not the trunk was blocked. The invariance was achieved by changes in arm interjoint coordination that, for reaches toward the ipsilateral target, started as early as 50 ms after the perturbation. Both deafferented subjects exhibited considerable, though incomplete, compensation for the effects of the perturbation. Compensation was more successful for reaches to the ipsilateral target. Both deafferented subjects showed invariance between conditions (unobstructed or blocked trunk motion) in their hand paths to the ipsilateral target, and one did to the contralateral target. For the other deafferented subject, hand paths in the two types of trials began to deviate after about 50% into the movement, because of excessive elbow extension. In movements to the ipsilateral target, when deafferented subjects compensated successfully, the changes in arm joint angles were initiated as early as 50 ms after the trunk perturbation, similar to healthy subjects. Although the deafferented subjects showed less than ideal compensatory control, they compensated to a remarkably large extent given their complete loss of proprioception. The presence of partial compensation in the absence of vision and proprioception points to the likelihood that not only proprioception but also vestibulospinal pathways help mediate this compensation.Due to an error in the citation line, this revised PDF (published in December 2003) deviates from the printed version, and is the correct and authoritative version of the paper.  相似文献

PurposeThe use of genomic sequencing (GS) in military settings poses unique considerations, including the potential for GS to impact service members’ careers. The MilSeq Project investigated the use of GS in clinical care of active duty Airmen in the United States Air Force (USAF).MethodsWe assessed perceived risks, benefits, and attitudes toward use of GS in the USAF among patient participants (n = 93) and health-care provider participants (HCPs) (n = 12) prior to receiving or disclosing GS results.ResultsParticipants agreed that there are health benefits associated with GS (90% patients, 75% HCPs), though more HCPs (75%) than patients (40%) agreed that there are risks (p = 0.048). The majority of both groups (67% HCPs, 77% patients) agreed that they trust the USAF with genetic information, but far fewer agreed that genetic information should be used to make decisions about deployment (5% patients, 17% HCPs) or duty assignments (3% patients, 17% HCPs). Despite their hesitancy, patients were supportive of the USAF testing for nondisease traits that could impact their duty performance. Eighty-seven percent of patients did not think their GS results would influence their career.ConclusionResults suggest favorable attitudes toward the use of GS in the USAF when not used for deployment or assignment decisions.  相似文献
