We present the case of a liver abscess that formed secondary to foreign bodies and formed a fistula the ascending colon and was successfully treated with percutaneous abscess drainage and colonoscopic removal of foreign bodies. A 64-year-old man presented with right upper and lower quadrant pain of 2 weeks' duration. Abdominal computed tomography was performed, demonstrating a single 3.5×1.9-cm abscess of the liver's right lobe and eccentric thickening of the colon wall at hepatic flexure. A percutaneous hepatic drainage catheter was placed under ultrasound guidance. Colonoscopic examination revealed multiple diverticula of the ascending colon and two 1.5-cm long fish bones at the ascending colon near the hepatic flexure. One end of each fish bone had impacted the edematous colonic mucosa and was surrounded by exudate polypoid inflammatory tissue. The fish bones were extracted with forceps. The patient was feeling well and was discharged after 12 days of treatment.  相似文献

42 patients with solitary (n = 34) and multiple (n = 8) abscesses of the liver (n = 36) and the spleen (n = 6) were treated with ultrasound guided percutaneous interventions. 38 patients (90%) underwent a total of 97 closed abscess aspirations using needles of 0.9 and 1.3 mm in diameter. In 4 cases (10%) percutaneous catheter drainage was performed. Intravenous antibiotics were used in all cases. Those patients with closed abscess aspiration additionally received local injection of aminoglycosides into the cavity. 40 out of the 42 patients could be treated successfully by percutaneous methods for a cure rate of 95.2%. Percutaneous drainage failure occurred in 2.4%. One patient with multiple liver abscesses and catheter drainage died from myocardial infarction (hospital mortality 2.4%). Complications of ultrasound-guided interventions included two minor bleedings, requiring no therapy, and one pleural empyema (complication rate 7.1%). There were no treatment related lethal complications. These results indicate that abscesses of the liver and the spleen up to 10 cm in diameter can be effectively treated by closed (repetitive) needle aspiration and antibiotic therapy with a relatively low rate of complications. About half of our patients with abscesses of more than 10 cm received percutaneous catheter drainage. On the basis of our experience surgical drainage of liver abscesses and splenectomy in splenic abscesses should be restricted to those cases with percutaneous drainage failure.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We compared the clinical features and outcomes of patients with spinal epidural abscess treated with prolonged parenteral antibiotics alone or combined with computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle aspiration drainage with those of patients undergoing surgical decompression. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 57 cases of spinal epidural abscess treated at an academic teaching hospital during a 14-year period. RESULTS: The lumbar region was most frequently involved, and 46% of patients were immunocompromised. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently encountered pathogen. For 60 treatment courses, management included medical only (25 patients), medical plus computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle aspiration (7 patients), or surgical drainage approaches (28 patients). Prolonged use of parenteral antibiotics alone or combined with percutaneous needle drainage yielded clinical outcomes at least comparable with antibiotics plus surgical intervention, irrespective of patient age, presence of comorbid illness, disease onset, neurologic abnormality at time of presentation, or abscess size. CONCLUSION: Patients with spinal epidural abscess can be safely and effectively treated with conservative medical treatment without the need for surgery.  相似文献

Perianal Abscess and Fistula-In-Ano in Infants: A Different Entity?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
PURPOSE The features of perianal abscess and fistula-in-ano in infants are different from those of older children, and there is controversy regarding their treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of various methods used for their management.METHODS A retrospective analysis of the records was conducted for all infants younger than 24 months of age treated for perianal abscess, fistula-in-ano, or both from 1990 to 2002.RESULTS The study included 98 infants. Perianal abscess was found in 77 patients (75 males), and fistula-in-ano in 21. No infant had an underlying illness. Drainage was performed by needle aspiration in 47 patients and by incision and drainage in 5. Following drainage, 43 patients received antibiotics. Altogether, 6 infants were treated with antibiotics alone and 19 with local care alone. Twenty-eight boys (36.4 percent) had an evolution toward fistula-in-ano. Patients who received antibiotics following drainage were less likely to develop fistula-in-ano than were patients who underwent a drainage procedure alone (27.9 percent vs. 66.7 percent, P < 0.05). All patients with fistula-in-ano were male and had been previously treated for perianal abscess (21 patients elsewhere and 28 in our department). Spontaneous cure of fistula-in-ano occurred in 42.9 percent of them (average 3.2 months), and 57.1 percent underwent fistulectomy for persistent fistula-in-ano. Cryptotomy was added when an involved crypt was found (11 patients, 39.3 percent). No recurrence of fistula-in-ano was noted after fistulectomy.CONCLUSIONS Local treatment for perianal abscess during the early stage and drainage by needle aspiration during the progressive stage are effective. Antibiotics may be considered for patients undergoing drainage of perianal abscess. Fistula-in-ano can be managed conservatively for one to three months. For a persisting fistula, fistulectomy with cryptotomy (when abnormal anal crypts are found) is the preferred treatment.Reprints are not available.  相似文献

Intra-abdominal abscesses are a frequent source of morbidity and mortality following both elective and emergent surgery of the alimentary tract. CT-guided percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscess is an alternative to immediate surgical intervention. We studied the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous drainage of intra-abdominal abscesses arising after elective colorectal procedures. We retrospectively identified 40 patients with postoperative intraabdominal abscess following elective colorectal surgery who underwent CT-guided percutaneous drainage with a Von Sonnenberg sump drain between 1990 and 1998. The most common presenting symptoms were pyrexia in 39 (97%), abdominal tenderness in 32 (80%), guarding in 1 (2.5%) and abdominal mass in 3 (7.5%); no patient had generalized peritonitis. The most common index procedure was proctocolectomy with ileoanal anastomosis and ileal Jpouch in 12 (30%) patients. Drainage was performed using an anterior approach in 32 (80%) and a transgluteal window in 8 (20%) patients. Thirty-five (87.5%) patients had a single collection, while 2 (5.0%) patients had 2 collections and 3 (7.5%) patients had 3 collections. Thirteen (32.5%) patients had perioperative steroids, 30 (75%) had preoperative antibiotics, and 40 (100%) had postoperative antibiotics. Follow-up at a mean of 35.8 days revealed complete resolution of abscess in 26 (65%) patients; 14 (35%) patients had residual or recurrent abscess successfully treated by repeat drainage in 8 patients and requiring laparotomy in 6. Percutaneous CT-guided abscess drainage is an effective method for treating intra-abdominal abscess following elective colorectal surgery. The primary success was 65% after the first and 85% after a second drainage. In conclusion, this technique should be considered as the treatment of choice in patients with localized intra-abdominal abscess without signs of generalized peritonitis. Percutaneous drainage of abscesses in patients with Crohn's disease   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The hospital courses of 9 patients with intraabdominal abscesses and Crohn's disease who underwent abscess drainage utilizing percutaneous techniques were reviewed. Percutaneous methods brought about resolution of fever, leukocytosis, and the abscess cavity in 8 patients. In 5 of these, definitive cure was achieved with percutaneous drainage. In 3, single-stage bowel surgery and fistulectomy were performed following resolution of the abscess cavities and improvement of clinical signs and symptoms. All patients had uncomplicated postoperative courses. Percutaneous drainage should be the initial drainage procedure in treating postoperative abscesses, and, when performed preoperatively, can diminish surgical morbidity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anal abscess is a frequent acute proctological disorder and whether the underlying fistula should be treated at the same time when the abscess is drained remains controversial. We examined indications for drainage alone versus drainage plus fistulotomy in terms of recurrence and continence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a randomized prospective study of 200 consecutive patients with anal abscess. One group received drainage alone, while in the other group drainage plus fistulotomy was performed when a subcutaneous-mucosa, low transsphincteral, or intersphincteral fistula was found. Delayed progressive fistulotomy with suture threads was performed in cases of high transsphincteric or suprasphincteric fistula. RESULTS: The internal opening of the fistula track was found in 83% of the patients. The recurrence rate was related to the surgical technique employed: 29% in the group with drainage alone and 5% in the group for which treatment of the fistula track was attempted. The incontinence rate was also related to the surgical option. In those receiving drainage and treatment of the fistula track incontinence was restricted mostly to patients with delayed fistulotomy (36.7%), compared to 2.8% of patients when simple fistulotomy was performed. There was no incontinence in the drainage alone group. CONCLUSION: Drainage of anal abscess with fistulotomy can be safely performed in cases of subcutaneous, intersphincteral, or low transsphincteral fistulae with a minimal recurrence rate. However, drainage alone and posterior treatment of the fistula track is recommended for high transsphincteral or suprasphincteral fistulae.  相似文献

Purpose CT-scan–guided percutaneous abscess drainage of Hinchey Stage II diverticulitis is considered the best initial approach to treat conservatively the abscess and to subsequently perform an elective sigmoidectomy. However, drainage is not always technically feasible, may expose the patient to additional morbidity, and has not been critically evaluated in this indication. This study was undertaken to compare the results of percutaneous drainage vs. antibiotic therapy alone in patients with Hinchey II diverticulitis. Methods This was a case-control study of all patients who presented in our institution with Hinchey Stage II diverticulitis between 1993 and 2005. Thirty-four patients underwent abscess drainage under CT-scan guidance (Group 1), and 32 patients were treated with antibiotic therapy alone (Group 2), in most cases because CT-scan-guided abscess drainage was considered technically unfeasible by the interventional radiology team. Initial conservative treatment was considered a failure when: 1) emergency surgery had to be performed, 2) signs of worsening sepsis developed, and 3) abscess recurred within four weeks of drainage. Results The median size of abscess was 6 (range, 3–18) cm in Group 1 and 4 (range, 3–10) cm in Group 2 (P = 0.002). Median duration of drainage was 8 (range, 1–18) days. Conservative treatment failed in 11 patients (33 percent) of Group 1, and in 6 patients (19 percent) of Group 2 (P = 0.26). Ten patients (29 percent) in Group 1 and five patients (16 percent) in Group 2 underwent emergency surgery (P = 0.24); there were four postoperative deaths (26.6 percent) in this subgroup. Twelve patients (35 percent) in Group 1 and 16 patients (50 percent) in Group 2 subsequently underwent an elective sigmoid resection (P = 0.31). In this subgroup of patients, there was neither anastomotic leakage nor postoperative death. Conclusions Emergency surgery for Hinchey Stage II diverticulitis carries a high mortality rate and should be avoided. To achieve this, antibiotic therapy alone seems to be a safe alternative, whenever percutaneous drainage is technically difficult or hazardous. Actually, our data did not demonstrate any benefit of CT scan-guided percutaneous abscess drainage, suggesting that the role of interventional radiology techniques in this indication deserves further critical evaluation. Iliopsoas abscess is a rare but serious complication of Crohn's disease. Initial treatment by surgical drainage of the abscess alone or in combination with bowel resection has been recommended. Percutaneous catheter abscess drainage (PAD) has not been described. We report 3 patients with this uncommon complication of Crohn's disease in whom PAD was attempted. It was successful in 2 cases but failed in 1, who went on to have the abscess drained surgically. We suggest that PAD can be a useful initial treatment to improve the patient's condition prior to definitive surgical resection.  相似文献

Hepatic abscess caused by foreign body penetration of the alimentary tract is rare.We report a case of gastric antrum penetration due to a toothpick complicated by liver abscess formation.A 41-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of upper abdominal pain for 2 mo.Esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed at a local clinic revealed a toothpick penetrating the gastric antrum.Computed tomography(CT)of the abdomen at our hospital revealed a gastricforeign body embedded in the posterior wall of gastric antrum with regional phlegmon over the lesser sac and adhesion to the pancreatic body without notable vascular injury,and a hepatic abscess seven cm in diameter over the left liver lobe.Endoscopic removal of the foreign body was successfully performed without complication.The liver abscess was treated with parenteral antibiotics without drainage.The patient’s recovery was uneventful.Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated complete resolution of the hepatic abscess six months after discharge.Relevant literature from the PubMed database was reviewed and the clinical presentations,diagnostic modalities,treatment strategies and outcomes of 88 reported cases were analyzed.The results showed that only 6 patients received conservative treatment with parenteral antibiotics,while the majority underwent either image-guided abscess drainage or laparotomy.Patients receiving abscess drainage via laparotomy had a significantly shorter length of hospitalization compared with those undergoing imageguided drainage.There was no significant difference in age between those who survived and those who died,however,the latter presented to hospitals in a more critical condition than the former.The overall mortality rate was 7.95%.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate the role and outcome of conventional surgery in the treatment of pyogenic liver abscess in the modern era of minimally invasive therapy.
METHODS: The medical records of thirteen patients with pyogenic liver abscess who underwent surgical treatment between January 1995 and December 2002 were retrospectively reviewed to determine the clinical presentation, indication and nature of surgery, and outcome of surgery.
RESULTS: The patients were predominantly women (10/13) with a mean age of 65 ± 17 years. Their main presenting symptoms were abdominal pain (100%) and fever (77%). The aetiologies included biliary (n = 6), cryptogenic (n = 3), portal (n = 2), and trauma (n = 2). Seven patients underwent percutaneous drainage as the initial treatment. Of these, three patients developed peritonitis secondary to peritoneal spillage. Another four patients failed to respond because of multiloculation. Salvage surgery was required in these patients. Six patients proceeded to straight laparotomy: two had marked sepsis and multiloculated abscess that precluded percutaneous drainage, and four presented with peritonitis of uncertain pathology. Surgical procedures included deroofment and drainage (n = 9), liver resection (n = 3), peritoneal lavage (n = 2), cholecystectomy (n = 4), and exploration of common bile duct (n = 2). One patient required reoperation because of bleeding. Three patients required further percutaneous drainage after surgery. The overall mortality was 46%. Four patients died of multiorgan failure and two patients died of pulmonary embolism.
CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment of pyogenic liver abscess is occasionally needed when percutaneous drainage has failed due to various reasons. Mortality rate in this group of patients has remained high.  相似文献

Retropharyngeal abscess, a rare event in adults, is usually observed in immunodeficient persons or subsequent to foreign bodies. We report a case of retropharyngeal abscess which revealed diabetes mellitus. A 47-year-old woman with an uneventful history complained of fever, dysphagia and trismus. Clinical findings were swelling of the pharyngeal posterior wall. The CT scan showed an abscess in the retropharyngeal space. Puncture revealed the purulent nature of the collection. The bacteriological study identified a Gram-negative aerobic germ (Citrobacter freundii). Laboratory tests disclosed diabetes mellitus with ketosis. The treatment consisted in surgical drainage and lavage of the retropharyngeal space using a saline solution with gentamycin associated with infusion of appropriate antibiotics. Abscess formation in the retropharyngeal space is a rare event in adults. The immunological status of the patient should be carefully explored. Management requires drainage of the collection and infusion of active antibiotics.  相似文献

Perianal fistulas occur in approximately 30% of patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Infliximab, a chimeric monoclonal antibody targeting human tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF), is approved for the treatment of fistulizing CD. Although the initial response to infliximab is dramatic, the median duration of fistula closure is approximately 3 months, and repeated infusions are often required. An exam under anesthesia (EUA) by a surgeon allows for complete inspection of the fistula as well as incision and drainage of an abscess and placement of a seton. Our aim was to compare the rate of perianal fistula healing, relapse rate, and time to relapse in patients with fistulizing CD treated with infliximab alone or as an adjunct to surgical EUA with seton placement. Thirty-two consecutive patients with perianal fistulizing CD who completed at least 3 infusions with infliximab (5 mg/kg at 0, 2, 6 weeks) between October 1999 and October 2001 were analyzed. All patients had at least 3 months of follow-up after the third dose of infliximab. Response was defined as complete closure and cessation of drainage from the fistula. Patients with CD and perianal fistulas who had an EUA prior to infliximab infusions had a better initial response (100% vs. 82.6%, p = 0.014), lower recurrence rate (44% vs. 79%, p = 0.001), and longer time to recurrence (13.5 months vs. 3.6 months, p = 0.0001) compared with patients receiving infliximab alone. In conclusion, patients with fistulizing CD treated with infliximab are more likely to maintain fistula closure if treatment is preceded by EUA and seton placement.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This study relates our experience with local surgical management of perianal Crohn's disease. METHOD: Of 1,735 patients with Crohn's disease seen between 1980 and 1990, records of 66 patients (3.8 percent) with symptomatic perianal Crohn's disease treated by local operations were retrospectively reviewed to study outcome of local surgical intervention. RESULTS: All patients had intestinal disease that was limited to the colon in 32 patients (48 percent), ileocolonic region in 22 patients (33 percent), and ileum in 12 patients (18 percent). Types of perianal disease encountered included perianal suppuration (57), anal fistula (47), anal fissure (21), anal stenosis (5), gluteal abscess (3), scrotal abscess (2), and anovaginal fistula (2). A total of 321 episodes of anal complications necessitated 256 local surgical interventions. Local anorectal operations performed included simple incision and drainage of abscess (57), fistulotomy (35), incision and drainage of complex anorectal abscesses and fistulas and insertion of seton (24), internal sphincterotomy (6), fissurectomy (1), and anal dilation (3). Of 24 patients with horseshoe abscesses and fistulas managed with insertion of a seton and 35 patients who underwent fistulotomy as a primary procedure or in conjunction with drainage of an abscess, none experienced fecal incontinence as a direct result of the operation. Thirteen patients required proctectomy to control perianal disease, and a similar number underwent total proctocolectomy for extensive intestinal disease. Forty patients (61 percent) continue to retain a functional anus. CONCLUSION: Patients with symptomatic low anal fistula involving minimum sphincter musculature can be treated safely with fistulotomy. Alternative treatment modalities of infected pancreatic necrosis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Infected pancreatic necrosis diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA) is generally considered an indication for surgery. Percutaneous drainage can postpone surgical intervention and in some cases can even have a therapeutic effect. Furthermore, targeted antibiotic therapy alone, based on bacterial cultures from FNA, can result in a full recovery. A retrospective analysis was carried out on the various treatment modalities of infected pancreatic necrosis. METHODOLOGY: Eighty patients with infected pancreatic necrosis were treated in the Department of Surgery, Teaching County Hospital, Gy?r, Hungary between 1998 and 2003. Seventy-four patients required surgical intervention, 12 of which underwent prior ultrasound or CT-guided drainage. RESULTS: In patients with previous percutaneous drainage the average time to first surgical intervention was 30 days (n=12). However, in those patients who did not undergo percutaneous drainage the time to initial surgical intervention was 15.6 days. This was statistically significant (p = 0.001). There was a full recovery in 3 out of the 15 patients, who underwent percutaneous drainage. This figure of 20% corresponds with that in the published literature. Three of the total 80 patients studied made a complete recovery when treated with targeted antibiotic therapy alone and did not require further radiological or surgical intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that percutaneous drainage can postpone surgical intervention. Furthermore, we demonstrate that percutaneous drainage alone can lead to full recovery in selected cases. In addition, targeted antibiotic therapy based on FNA may result in the complete recovery of a stable patient without requiring radiological or surgical intervention.  相似文献

Abscesses in Crohn's disease: outcome of medical versus surgical treatment   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
GOALS: To compare the long-term outcome of medical, percutaneous, and surgical treatment of abdominal and pelvic abscesses complicating Crohn's disease. STUDY: All patients with Crohn's disease and an abdominal abscess treated at one institution during a 10-year period were retrospectively identified. We reviewed hospital and outpatient records and contacted patients for telephone interviews. Outcome measures included abscess recurrence, subsequent surgery for Crohn's disease, and medications used at the time of most recent follow-up. RESULTS: Fifty-one subjects were identified, with a mean follow-up of 3.75 years. Fewer patients developed recurrent abscesses after initial surgical drainage and bowel resection (12%) than patients treated with medical therapy only or percutaneous drainage (56%) (p = 0.016). One half of the patients treated nonoperatively ultimately required surgery, whereas only 12% of those treated with initial surgery required reoperation during the follow-up period (p = 0.010). Most failures of nonoperative therapy occurred within 3 months. Medication use was similar between the treatment groups at the time of most recent follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: In this series, surgical management of abscesses in Crohn's disease was more effective than medical treatment or percutaneous drainage for prevention of abscess recurrence. However, nonoperative therapy prevented subsequent surgery in half of the patients and may be a reasonable treatment option for some patients.  相似文献

One hundred twenty-five cases of amebic liver abscess were diagnosed at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan from January 1981 to December 1989. An analysis of possible prognostic factors for severe amebic liver abscess was done retrospectively. The majority of the patients came from the southern part of Taiwan. Severe amebic liver abscess was defined as the rupture of an abscess that was resistant to 72 hr of medical treatment, or complicated by secondary bacterial infection. The results showed significant differences between patients with severe liver abscess and those with more moderate forms of amebic liver abscess in indices such as jaundice, hemoglobin and serum bilirubin levels, and dyspnea, as well as in pulmonary changes (right diaphragm elevation, right pleural effusion) seen on chest radiographs. Those patients with diabetes mellitus also had greater evidence of severe liver abscess. Moderate cases that were treated with amebicides showed excellent responses (no mortality). Severe cases required, in addition to amebicide therapy, either percutaneous or surgical drainage of pus, especially in those patients with ruptured abscesses. Those patients with abscesses that ruptured into the thoracic cavity were treated by either thoracostomy or needle aspiration, and all were cured. Three patients died of abscess rupture into the abdominal cavity, associated with secondary bacterial infection. The overall mortality rate was 2.4%. These symptoms and signs of severe liver abscess are indicators of the need for intensive treatment such as aspiration or surgical drainage.  相似文献

Aspergillus infection of the vertebral bodies and intervertebral disc spaces with consequent formation of a spinal epidural abscess was diagnosed in 3 patients with acute leukaemia. Medical therapy consisted of high-dose amphotericin-B with good local control of disease in one patient. The second patient underwent surgical drainage. The third patient had stabilisation of the disease. The clinical features, diagnosis and treatment are discussed.  相似文献

PURPOSE The aim of of this study was to evaluate prospectively the long-term outcome of mesocolic and pelvic diverticular abscesses of the left colon.METHODS Between October 1986 and October 1997, a total of 465 patients urgently admitted to our hospital with a suspected diagnosis of acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis had a CT scan. Of 76 patients (17 percent) who had an associated mesocolic or pelvic abscess, 3 were lost to follow-up. The remaining 73 patients (45 with a mesocolic abscess and 28 with a pelvic abscess) were followed for a median of 43 months.RESULTS of the 45 patients with a mesocolic abscess, 7 (15 percent) required surgery during their first hospitalization versus 11 (39 percent) of the 28 patients with a pelvic abscess (P = 0.04). At the end of follow-up, 22 (58 percent) of the 38 patients with a mesocolic abscess who had successful conservative treatment during their first hospitalization did not need surgical treatment vs. 8 (47 percent) of the 17 who had a pelvic abscess. Altogether, 51 percent of the patients with a mesocolic abscess had surgical treatment versus 71 percent of those with a pelvic abscess (P = 0.09).CONCLUSIONS Considering the poor outcome of pelvic abscess associated with acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis, percutaneous drainage followed by secondary colectomy seems justified. The ingestion of foreign bodies such as coins, fish bones, plastic toy parts, batteries, and needles is common in children. Although the majority of ingested foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract unaided, some children require either nonsurgical or surgical intervention. The medical records of children who presented to the pediatric emergency department of a single tertiary referral center between December 2001 and May 2006 were reviewed. A total of 87 patients underwent an endoscopic procedure because of suspected foreign body ingestion and foreign bodies were identified by endoscopy in 74 patients (85.1%). The mean age of these 74 patients was 3.4 years (range, 6 months to 13 years). The most common site of foreign body lodgement was the esophagus (n = 38, 51.4%); other sites included the stomach (n = 33, 44.6%) and duodenum (n = 3, 4.0%). The types of foreign bodies included coins (n = 42, 56.8%), button batteries (n = 16, 21.6%), sharp objects (n = 9, 12.2%), chicken bones (n = 2, 2.7%) and others (n = 5, 6.7%). Only two foreign bodies (button batteries) in the duodenum could not be removed successfully by endoscopy. Instead, they were moved into the intestine and then eliminated spontaneously the following day. There were no major complications caused by foreign body ingestion or endoscopic procedures. The outcome of all patients was uneventful without morbidity or mortality. In our experience, endoscopic removal of foreign bodies under general anesthesia is an effective and safe method in children; the method also prevents erosion and perforation of the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献
