The use of composite overlays to increase the fatigue life of notched steel samples is discussed in this paper. For such purposes, in the first set of studies, static and fatigue tests as well as the detailed analytical and numerical analyses for samples with double-lap joints were performed. Based on such studies, the shapes of the composite overlays were set. For a better understanding of the failure forms of the investigated adhesive joints, the experimental studies were monitored with the use of digital image correlation. In the second set of experimental studies, the static and fatigue tensile tests were performed for steel samples with a rectangular opening with rounded corners reinforced by composite overlays. The different shapes (square 45 × 45 mm and long stripes 180 × 15 mm) and composite materials (GFRP and CFRP) were used as overlays. The obtained improvement of fatigue life was in the range of 180–270% in the case of the rectangular overlays and 710% in the case of application of the overlays in the form of the long stripes. This was also confirmed by numerical analyses in which a reduction in the stress concentration factor from 2.508 (bare sample) through 2.014–2.183 (square 45 × 45 mm overlays) to 1.366 (overlays in the form of long stripes 180 × 15 mm) was observed.  相似文献

The glass fiber reinforced polypropylene/AA2024 hybrid laminates (short for Al/Gf/PP laminates) as structural materials were prepared and formed by hot pressing. The synergistic effects of temperature and loading speed on the laminate deformation under tensile and bending conditions were investigated and analyzed in this study. In tension, stress–strain curves presented bimodal types effected by tensile rates and temperatures. The state of PP resin determines the mechanical behavior of the FMLs. The tensile rate has no effect on FML deformation without heating or over the melting point of PP resin (about 170 °C). The softening point of PP resin (about 100 °C) is characteristic temperature. When the temperature exceeds the softening point but does not reach the melting point, the tensile strength and elongation will demonstrate coordinated growth at a relatively high tensile speed. The efficiency of fiber bridging is affected significantly since the resin is the medium that transfers load from the metal to the fiber. Under bending, the curves presented a waterfall decrement with temperature increment. The softening point of resin matrix is the key in a bending process. When the temperature is near the softening point, deformation is sensitive to both the temperature and the loading speed to a certain extent. If temperature is lower than softening point, deformation is mainly guided by temperature. If the temperature is beyond the softening point, loading speed is in a leading position of deformation. The bending strength gradually increases with loading rate. By using these deformation characteristics, the deformation of the thermoplastic laminates can be controlled in stamping or other plastic forming processes for thermoplastic fiber metal laminates.  相似文献

Mechanical properties play a key role in the failure of dental implants. Dental implants require fatigue life testing before clinical application, but this process takes a lot of time. This study investigated the effect of various loading angles and implant lengths on the static fracture and fatigue life of dental implants. Implants with lengths of 9 mm and 11 mm were prepared. Static fracture tests and dynamic fatigue life tests were performed under three loading angles (30°, 40°, and 50°), and the level arm and bending moment were measured. After that, the fracture morphology and fracture mode of the implant were observed. The results showed that 9 mm length implants have a higher static failure load and can withstand greater bending moments, while 11 mm length implants have a longer fatigue life. In addition, as the loading angle increases, the static strength and bending moment decrease linearly, and the fatigue life shows an exponential decrease at a rate of three times. Increasing the loading angle reduces the time of the implant fatigue test, which may be an effective method to improve the efficiency of the experiment.  相似文献

This paper describes the non-uniform corrosion characteristics and mechanical properties of reinforcement under coupled action of carbonation and static loading. The two parameters, namely area-box (AB) value and arithmetical mean deviation (Ra), are adopted to characterize the corrosion morphology and pitting distribution from experimental observations. The results show that the static loading affects the corrosion characteristics of reinforcement. Local stress concentration in corroded reinforcement caused by tensile stress drives the corrosion pit pattern to be more irregular. The orthogonal test results from finite element simulations show that pit shape and pit depth are the two significant factors affecting the tensile behavior of reinforcement. Under the condition of similar corrosion mass loss ratio, the maximum plastic strain of corroded reinforcement increases with the increase of Ra and load time-history significantly.  相似文献

Mechanical joints are commonly required in structures made of fiber metal laminate (FML), which pose a threat due to multi-site stress concentrations at rivet or bolt holes. Thus, for a reasonably designed FML joint, it is essential to characterize the failure mechanism of multiple-hole FML; however, little information about this has been found in open literature. In the present work, influences of hole arrangement and loading strategy (on-axis or off-axis) on the failure mechanism of multiple-hole FML were investigated, by performing finite element analyses and energy dissipation analyses with elastoplastic progressive damage models that took curing stress into account. Six types of specimens with holes arranged in parallel and staggered forms were designed, whose geometrical parameters were in strict accordance with those specified for composites joints. It indicated that the stress distribution, gross/net notched strength, critical fracture path, and damage evaluation process were only slightly influenced by the hole number and hole arrangement. On the other hand, they were strongly influenced by the loading strategy, due to the transition of failure domination. Results presented here can provide evidence for introducing design regulations of composite joints into the more hybrid FML, and for reasonably determining its multiple-hole strength merely based on the sing-hole specimen.  相似文献

In the present work, a numerical model based on the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) approach has been developed to simulate mixed-mode fracture of co-consolidated low melt polyaryletherketone thermoplastic laminates by considering fiber bridging. A modified traction separation law of a tri-linear form has been developed by superimposing the bi-linear behaviors of the matrix and fibers. Initially, the data from mode I (DCB) and mode II (ENF) fracture toughness tests were used to construct the R-curves of the joints in the opening and sliding directions. The constructed curves were incorporated into the numerical models employing a user-defined material subroutine developed in the LS-Dyna finite element (FE) code. A numerical method was used to extract the fiber bridging law directly from the simulation results, thus eliminating the need for the continuous monitoring of crack opening displacement during testing. The final cohesive model was implemented via two identical FE models to simulate the fracture of a Single-Lap-Shear specimen, in which a considerable amount of fiber bridging was observed on the fracture area. The numerical results showed that the developed model presented improved accuracy in comparison to the CZM with the bi-linear traction–separation law (T–SL) in terms of the predicted strength of the joint.  相似文献

This paper aims to study the mechanical behaviour and failure mode of Al 2024-T3 in double-lap bolted joints. To accomplish this, the effect of geometric parameters was investigated in both configurations of single and double fasteners. Using ABAQUS/Standard, a three-dimensional finite element model was developed and verified against the experimental results of the joints loaded in tension. In general, double bolt joints were found to have greater load carrying capacities than single bolt joints (by 40%–49%). In single bolt joints, the plate width had insignificant effect on the behaviour of the joint under tensile loading; whereas, increasing the distance of the hole from the edge, considerably enhanced the strength of the joint. In double bolt joints, changing the edge distance had almost no effect on the behaviour of the joint. However, increasing the plate width from 25.4 to 30 mm increased the load carrying capacity by 28%. This study showed that in single bolt connections, with increasing the edge distance, the failure mode can favourably shift from shear-out to bearing. Also, double bolt joints with wider plates (increased width) can beneficially shift the failure mode from net-tension to bearing. The geometric parameters were found to play an important role in controlling the failure mode so that catastrophic failure modes of net-tension and shear-out can be prevented in bolted joint.  相似文献

This paper reports on the flexural behavior of nine steel fiber reinforced-recycled aggregate concrete (SFRAC) beams through combined experimental and finite element analysis. The test parameters in this study include the steel fiber volume fraction, recycled aggregate replacement ratio, and concrete strength. The failure modes, crack development, load-deflection curves, and flexural bearing capacity of SFRAC beams are investigated in detail. The test results indicated that cracks and concrete crushing are formed in the compression zone of all specimens. The flexural bearing capacity of SFRAC beams increases with the increase of steel fiber volume fraction and concrete strength and the decrease of recycled aggregate replacement ratio. In addition, the results are compared with those of the finite element analysis. Based on the uniaxial compressive constitutive model of SFRAC, a new model for calculating the flexural bearing capacity of SFRAC beams is proposed. The prediction and test results are compared to evaluate the accuracy of the developed formula. The studies may provide a considerable reference for designing this type of structure in engineering practice.  相似文献

The paper is dedicated to the numerical analysis of a single-step joint, enabling the prediction of stiffness and failure modes of both single- and double-step joints. An experimental analysis of the geometrically simplest version, the single-step joint, serves as a reference for the calibration of the subsequent finite element model. The inhomogeneous and anisotropic properties of solid timber make detailed modelling computationally intensive and strongly dependent on the respective specimen. Therefore, the authors present a strategy for simplified but still appropriate modelling for the prediction of local failure at certain load levels. The used mathematical approach is based on the linear elasticity theory and orthotropic material properties. The finite element calculations are performed in the environment of the software Abaqus FEA. The calibrated numerical model shows a good conformity until first failures occur. It allows for a satisfactory quantification of the stiffness of the connection and estimation of the force when local failure begins and is, therefore, recommended for future, non-destructive research of timber connections of various shapes.  相似文献

The shear behavior of innovative engineered cementitious composites (ECC) members with a hybrid mix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polypropylene (PP) fibers is examined. The overall objective of the investigation is to understand the shear behavior of ECC beams with different mono and hybrid fiber combinations without compromising the strength and ductility. Four different configurations of beams were prepared and tested, including 2.0% of PP fibers, 2.0% of PVA fibers, 2.0% of steel fibers and hybrid PVA and PP fibers (i.e., 1% PP and 1% PVA). In addition to the tests, a detailed nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was accomplished using the commercial ABAQUS software. The validated FE model was used to perform an extensive parametric investigation to optimize the design parameters for the hybrid-fiber-reinforced ECC beams under shear. The results revealed that the use of hybrid PVA and PP fibers improved the performance by enhancing the overall strength and ductility compared to the steel and PP-fiber-based ECC beams. Incorporating hybrid fibers into ECC beams increased the critical shear crack angle, indicating the transition of a failure from a brittle diagonal tension to a ductile bending.  相似文献

This paper describes the influence of defects occurring in struts under tension, obtained using the additive method of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), on the stress and strain distributions. The study used struts of different thicknesses separated from Ti-6Al-4V diamond lattice structures. For numerical modeling of stress and strain fields, models that reflect the realistic shape of the tested struts with their imperfections were used. The shape of the diamond structure struts was obtained based on microtomographic measurements. Based on the results obtained, the influence of defects in the material structure on the stress and strain distribution was analyzed. It was observed that the main factor influencing the stress and strain distribution in the struts are micronotches on their external surface. These imperfections have a significantly greater impact on the stress and strain concentration than the micropores inside. Furthermore, the interactions of the imperfections are also important, which in turn affects the stress distributions and the formation of bands of high-stress values inside the material. The relationship between the presence of micropores, the stress–strain curves, and the mechanical properties of the material was also assessed.  相似文献

Carbon fiber reinforcement used in concrete has become a remarkable alternative to steel fibers. Admixing short fibers to fresh concrete and processing the material with a 3D printer leads to an orientation of fibers and a material with high uniaxial strength properties, which offers an economic use of fibers. To investigate its mechanical behavior, the material is subjected to flexural and tensional tests, combining several measuring techniques. Numerical analysis complements this research. Computed tomography is used with several post-processing algorithms for separating matrix and fibers. This helps to validate fiber alignment and serves as input data for numerical analysis with representative volume elements concatenating real fiber position and orientation with the three-dimensional stress tensor. Flexural and uniaxial tensional tests are performed combining multiple measuring techniques. Next to conventional displacement and strain measuring methods, sound emission analysis, in terms of quantitative event analysis and amplitude appraisal, and also high-resolution digital image correlation accompany the tests. Due to the electrical conductibility of carbon fibers, the material’s resistivity could be measured during testing. All sensors detect the material’s degradation behavior comparably, showing a strain-hardening effect, which results from multiple, yet locally restricted and distributed, microcracks arising in combination with plastic deformation.  相似文献
